COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

FISCAL YEAR 2022

Dear Friends,

As our community has slowly emerged from the pandemic that has gripped us for the past two years, we have been reminded that the Science Center is more than just a destination. We are an essential educator, providing experiences that build important skills that help us address the challenges ahead. To many, we are a trusted friend, providing information to better understand our ever-changing world.

This past year, we combined the new skills we forged out of necessity with the return of many of the tried-and-true experiences that have come to define us. It was so gratifying to see audiences return for in-person experiences like new exhibits, science festivals, and fundraising events. These moments have always ignited curiosity, stimulated learning, and built important skills while attendees enjoyed a good time with family and friends. It was wonderful to see these opportunities fully embraced again.

During this time, we have also focused on what it means for us to provide access to STEM learning for our community. Our mission is to inspire science learning for life and that means for everyone, not just those who can afford to visit Orlando Science Center. We understand there are significant challenges and barriers to visiting the Science Center including cost, transportation, or not feeling adequately represented. To truly offer meaningful STEM learning for everyone, we are committed to breaking down these barriers by reaching directly into the neighborhoods we serve with a more impactful and consistent presence.

Our initial efforts kicked off this summer at Grand Avenue Community Center in Holden Heights and we are excited to see more programs launching soon at other partner locations. Our new outreach program will bring frequent, high quality hands-on STEM learning to underserved neighborhoods throughout our community. Our team is dedicated to being the spark that ignites the genius that resides in everyone. Wherever we go, our goal is to create an environment conducive to creating a better future. We inspire and educate, ultimately showing how science and technology are essential to solving problems and improving lives.

Sincerely,

A TIME OF IMPACT

RETURNING TO A FULL SCHEDULE

After two long years, Orlando Science Center was thrilled to hit the ground running and welcome back a full schedule of community events and fundraisers such as Science Night Live, the 10th Annual Science of Wine fundraiser, as well as returning to Tallahassee for STEM Day at the Capitol and introducing a new fundraiser –Science on Tap.

While this time apart has been challenging for all of us, it has had an unprecedented effect on our youth for whom engaging educational experiences are now more important than ever. Teamwork and social skills are a crucial part of the learning process, and informal learning opportunities offer the chance to practice these skills in a safe and fun environment.

Our visitor experience team works closely with families and individuals on the exhibit floor to create an engaging experience while our education team is focused on connections with teachers and students, both during field trip experiences and workshops at the Science Center and events onsite at schools.

This past year saw many visitors return to Orlando Science Center with our attendance numbers comparable to pre-pandemic numbers. People were ready to get out and they made our exhibits, events, and camps their destination of choice. We are grateful for the community’s trust in us as a safe and welcoming location to engage curious minds of all ages.

MORE THAN EVER, SCIENCE MATTERS

The process of science is messy. It’s full of observation and experimentation, theories, and hypotheses. Answers change as new data comes into play. There are very few absolutes in the world of science learning and the idea that what’s true today could change tomorrow makes many uncomfortable.

We live in a world of constant information with most of it communicated via the internet where often there is very little evidence-based reasoning or fact-checking. We want people to remain open to new information and understand that science is a never-ending pursuit of knowledge to solve complex problems. This is why the scientific method and critical thinking can be very useful in helping make informed decisions.

The need to promote the importance of these skills inspired Orlando Science Center to launch “Science Matters” - a public information campaign that promotes using the scientific method while increasing confidence in science literacy. Trusted resources for information online and onsite activities help illustrate how people can use critical thinking and other STEM skills to better understand the impact of science on the major issues of the day.

We kicked off “Science Matters” by promoting the importance of getting vaccinated to fight the spread of COVID-19. “Vaccines Save Lives” messages were shared on billboards, social media, postcards, and activities on the exhibit floor. A “Science Matters” page on our website shared information and resources to increase vaccine literacy and confidence.

Thanks to a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Orlando Science Center was a key participant in “Communities for Immunity,” which was coordinated by the Association of Science and Technology Centers to promote vaccine confidence. We partnered with the Florida Department of Health and Orange County to host four vaccination events at Orlando Science Center, which provided first, second, and booster shots to hundreds of all ages. Our team also created original interactive programming that helped explain how vaccines work in our body to fight disease.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

SCIENCE FOR ALL

Orlando Science Center wants to be a place where all people feel safe, welcome, and empowered to learn and develop educational and career aspirations in STEM. We understand that inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) are vital for our community and our future STEM workforce.

We are actively working to create policies, implement practices, and take actions that ensure every individual, especially those who are underrepresented in STEM fields, have access to high-quality STEM education and careers. We want them to realize their true potential and fully participate in building community prosperity and a better tomorrow for future generations.

Developing a personal connection with STEM is vital to inspiring an individual to continue lifelong education and exciting opportunities with STEM careers. Orlando Science Center is committed to eliminating economic barriers to STEM learning through our Science For All initiatives. Our access program ensures all individuals and families have access to high-quality STEM learning through reduced-price admissions and discounted family memberships.

Science For All extends beyond just admissions and memberships to encompass our efforts to ensure that every individual has access to high quality, relevant, and authentic STEM experiences. This year, we launched Neighborhood Science – a high-impact, transformational project providing consistent, hands-on STEM learning experiences to students in underserved neighborhoods through afterschool programs at their schools and community centers.

NEIGHBORHOOD SCIENCE

With the demand for STEM careers on the rise throughout Florida and an intense underrepresentation of women and people of color in STEM fields across the country, Orlando Science Center is dedicated to breaking down barriers and revitalizing STEM education in our community. We recognize that to have a substantial impact on underserved youth, we need to connect with them where they where they live and play.

Our outreach has been expanded to engage students in their neighborhoods with an authentic and consistent presence several times a week. In collaboration with the City of Orlando, Neighborhood Science launched in June 2022 with STEM activities engaging youth during summer programs at the new Grand Avenue Community Center, located in the Holden Heights neighborhood.

Neighborhood Science at Grand Avenue continues into the academic year with afterschool programs offering coding, robotics, virtual reality, engineering design challenges, 3D printing, and more. Our team will nurture long-term relationships through frequent interactions several times a week. Neighborhood Science is also expanding with similar programming at the Jacqueline Bradley and Clarence Otis Branch of the Boys & Girls Club.

We are excited for this new effort and grateful for generous funding from partners including NASA, Kiwanis Club of Central Florida Foundation, the DeVos Family Foundation, the Department of the Navy, The LEGO Group, and others. With their help, Neighborhood Science will inspire an entire generation for a lifetime journey of discovery.

NEW EVENTS, NEW ENERGY SCIENCE

ON TAP

Cheers to good beers and a great cause! Inspired by the success of our annual Science of Wine fundraiser, we tapped into the incredible Central Florida craft beer community to present the 1st annual Science on Tap benefiting Orlando Science Center.

The event connected local residents and businesses through delicious tastings, live music, and science demonstrations to celebrate our community and raise funds for Orlando Science Center. Proceeds from Science on Tap provide support for educational programs and engaging opportunities for youth and families to experience the joy of discovery through meaningful family time.

SCIENCE FOR ALL CELEBRATION

At Orlando Science Center, our mission is to inspire science learning for life for all people – regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, or abilities. We teamed up with our community partners to celebrate diversity, history, and culture in STEM with the Science For All Celebration, a brand-new weekend event!

Each January, this event will serve to kick off monthly event weekends by bringing together local organizations who are working to make a difference in our Central Florida community. Science For All Celebration creates a unique opportunity for visitors to meet and connect with local change-makers and learn how they can get involved.

OTRONICON SCIENCE FESTIVAL

Innovation is an ongoing process that never ends. Just as the engineering design process forms a circle with no beginning and no ending, innovation is constantly changing, improving, and morphing into something new and improved. It’s our goal that our largest and most attended event of the year continues to evolve alongside the innovators we feature every year.

As part of this goal, we celebrated our 17th annual Otronicon this year and began preparing for the event’s next phase of growth, which embraces an even bigger and bolder vision for the future.

In 2023, Otronicon will become Spark STEM Fest and expand our reach into the community with more partners and an even stronger focus on sparking innovation, curiosity, and a passion for STEM in Central Florida.

With this transformation comes the opportunity to highlight an even broader range of STEM disciplines and inspire curious minds of all ages through hands-on learning experiences and meaningful interactions with STEM professionals! From innovative technology to wildlife encounters and environmental initiatives, to the science of acrobatics (yes, you read that right), attendees will continue to experience first-hand how science, technology, and innovation are a part of everything we do.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

UNLOCK SCIENCE WITH NEW LIFE

Construction on our groundbreaking new exhibit Life is officially underway! On June 1, 2022, CEO & President JoAnn Newman was joined by the exhibit’s presenting sponsor, Dr. Sarah Layton, and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings for an official groundbreaking. Armed with hard hats and golden sledgehammers, the trio tore down the old NatureWorks sign, revealing signage for the new exhibit and sharing some exciting plans for the future.

Orlando Science Center is dedicated to helping create a stronger and healthier world by educating our visitors using iconic experiences. Life focuses on three distinct environments: Ocean, Rainforest, and Swamp. The story of each ecosystem will immerse

visitors in the natural world, demonstrate the forces that are having a negative impact, and reveal the positive actions that humans are taking plus how each of us can help.

As part of the Science Center’s Unlock Science Campaign, Life will promote messages of sustainability and conservation reinforced by live animal interactions and hands-on displays. By encountering live animals and learning more about their changing habitats, visitors will better understand their role in protecting our ecosystem. Life is the largest exhibit construction project in the Science Center’s history and will premiere in late 2023.

We are extremely grateful to Orange County and to Dr. Layton for the generous gifts that made this new 10,000 square foot exhibit experience possible.
