Dear Friends, This summer, we had the pleasure to collaborate with retired astronaut Nicole Stott on a workshop in our Neighborhood Science program at the Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center. As a project for Nicole’s Space for Art Foundation, our students painted swatches of fabric for a space suit that could be used on a future space mission. Her visit was made possible through our partnership with WMFE Radio, United Arts of Central Florida and the Orange County Office of Cultural Affairs. Mayor Buddy Dyer joined us and WMFE’s Judith Smelser and Brendan Byrne. Nicole is a veteran astronaut with two spaceflights and 104 days as a crewmember on both the International Space Station (ISS) and the Space Shuttle. She co-founded her Space for Art Foundation to inspire children through the awe and wonder of space exploration and the power of art. It was an amazing afternoon. She was so generous with her time and made every student there feel special as they painted images of planets, rockets and suns on this fabric that might be carried into space one day. Neighborhood Science is a very special program, which has grown over the last year to engage youth for multiple days each week at both Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center and the Bradley-Otis Boys & Girls Club in nearby West Lakes. Both programs offer access to hands-on STEM learning for two of Orlando’s most distressed neighborhoods. Students are engaged each day with coding, robotics, hydroponics, 3D printing and so much more. They are realizing their true potential.
As Nicole shared anecdotes of painting watercolors on the ISS and sleeping in zero gravity, we were struck with the realization that we were hanging out with someone who had actually LIVED in outer space. Our students were interacting with an astronaut who had traveled on the space shuttle beyond our atmosphere. These children, who may have never left the city limits, were chatting with someone who had left our planet. They were painting fabric that ultimately could go into space on a spacesuit. At that moment, our young friends realized that anything was possible. These precious moments of inspiration are why Orlando Science Center was founded. Since 1955, our team has been creating opportunities for learning and discovery for curious minds of all ages. Orlando Science Center is here to provide access, encourage learning and ignite curiosity. One day, one of our Neighborhood Science youths is likely to achieve something spectacular. It might be walking on Mars or curing cancer or creating a strain of wheat that can grow anywhere. They will be asked how they got started on their journey to greatness. They’ll smile and say it was the day I met someone from outer space. We look forward to that moment.
Sincerely,
JoAnn Newman, President & CEO
Nirav Pandya, Chair, Board of Trustees (FY 2022-2023)
OU R STORY SCIENCE FOR ALL & NEIGHBORHOOD SCIENCE Orlando Science Center’s mission is to inspire science learning for life. Not just for some, but for all. We recognized the gaps in access to STEM education years ago, particularly the underrepresentation of people of color and women. This led us to create the Science for All initiative and vision, aiming to provide free and reduced-price admission to the Science Center and to partner with community groups to deliver innovative STEM educational programming at low- to no-cost. Through this collective work we have eliminated barriers and provided greater access to successfully reach more than a million people over the past decade. As our community slowly emerged from the pandemic, we saw the gaps in STEM education continue to widen as some communities were more significantly impacted than others. We turned to our partners and collaborators to understand the challenges and how to meaningfully engage with our community to have a greater impact. Through this outreach, Neighborhood Science was born. Neighborhood Science represents the next level of Science for All. It’s meeting our community where they are and showing up for multiple days each week over multiple years. We have partnered with the City of Orlando’s Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center and the Jacqueline Bradley and Clarence Otis branch of Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, offering free STEM workshops four-to-five days a week for students from elementary to high school, with approximately 5,500 student touchpoints each year.
OSC educators develop curriculum to align with students’ needs and interests, building off each touch point to further enhance each individual lesson. Students explore topics including robotics, forensics, space, physics, and making/tinkering. Activities are highly engaging, and long-term projects, such as building vertical gardens using plastic bottles and lunar regolith or “moon dirt” to grow red leaf lettuce, keep students coming back week after week. Neighborhood Science is a game changer for STEM inclusion and increased access, encouraging underserved students from low-income communities to actively engage and see themselves as future STEM professionals. We are proud that this innovative program has gained
national attention and support, winning competitive awards from both NASA and the Office of Naval Research. We are thankful to major supporters who made the inaugural year of Neighborhood Science possible and help ensure its future success including Disney, the DeVos Family Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Central Florida Foundation, and LEGO. “We have an opportunity to change a child’s life, change a family’s life, change a child’s trajectory because of some of the things we are doing here today.” Joseph Caesar, Recreation District Manager, Families, Park and Recreation Department, City of Orlando
SCIENCE MATTERS During the COVID-19 pandemic, Orlando Science Center recognized a need to educate the community about the efficacy and function of vaccinations. We launched the Vaccines Save Lives campaign in 2020 and an ongoing Science Matters campaign evolved from this effort. Science Matters is a public information campaign that promotes using the scientific method to make informed decisions while increasing confidence in science literacy. Trusted resources for information online and onsite activities help illustrate how the scientific method can help people better understand the impact of science on the major issues of the day. This year, we expanded the Science Matters campaign more than ever before, launching both the Mythbusting Misinformation campaign and the Protect the Planet campaign.
MYTHBUSTING MISINFORMATION
The foundation of the Mythbusting Misinformation campaign is the basis upon which we will build all future Science Matters messaging. It focuses on the principles of the scientific method and critical thinking, providing guidance on how to apply these tools to the vast amounts of information we encounter daily. Mythbusting Misinformation was launched in August 2022, with a central landing page on the website to provide resources for home learning and supported discussions, accompanied by programming in the building to reinforce those concepts. Guests can peruse the videos and learning resources online and then come to Orlando Science Center to participate in hands-on activities, such as the Jumping to Conclusions pop-up. Jumping to Conclusions uses common scientific misconceptions to help illustrate how far we can stray from facts based on assumptions we make.
PROTECT THE PLANET Protect the Planet focuses on building science literacy regarding climate change, conservation, and sustainability. With this campaign, we provide tools to help the community gain a better understanding of how we as individuals are all impacted by climate change. We identify resources to help break down what climate change means and why we should all care about it.
about Earth’s changing climate with something for all ages, opinions, and education levels. The programs and resources amassed for the Protect the Planet campaign provide a great launch point for discussions about humanity’s place in the global ecosystem - critical conversations that we’ll continue to pursue with the opening of the Life exhibit.
We launched the Protect the Planet campaign in February 2023, and just like with Mythbusting Misinformation, we provide online resources and on-site programming to reinforce critical concepts behind conservation and sustainability. The Global Warning! show happens daily on the Discovery Stage, providing a fun demonstration-based conversation
The Science Matters campaign is part of a larger goal to help position Orlando Science Center as the go-to resource for important information regarding STEM advancements. We plan to continue building upon these foundational concepts to help advance our mission to inspire science learning for life.
SPARK STEM FEST Orlando Science Center’s most popular multi-day event known as Otronicon has evolved into Spark STEM Fest! As Otronicon grew, we better understood the true educational power of connecting the public with industry leaders through exclusive opportunities and creative partners. This type of collaboration combined with a desire to ignite curiosity, inspire innovation, and build community became the foundation for the all-new Spark STEM Fest! Science is all around us and in everything we do. This event was designed to introduce curious minds of all ages to people and organizations representing a variety of STEM fields for an engaging, authentic, hands-on introduction to STEM topics, careers, and interests. This year, guests learned from some of Central Florida’s greatest innovators – UCF researchers, Disney scientists, NASA engineers, marine biologists, jugglers, acrobats who use their performances to explain scientific principles, and so much more! Residing at the crossroads of inspiration and engagement, Spark STEM Fest stimulates fascination with STEM careers, encourages meaningful interactions between the public and STEM professionals and creates dreams of a bright new future.

LIFE TAKES SHAPE THROUGH UNLOCK SCIENCE The Unlock Science Comprehensive Campaign is Orlando Science Center’s $30 million fundraising effort supporting the renovation and expansion of our high-quality exhibits and educational programming. Through this campaign we have seen the Science Center transformed with hugely popular additions like KidsTown, The Hive: a Makerspace, Flight Lab, STEM Discovery Center, Tiny Green Home, and Food Heroes. This past year we have made way for our largest and most ambitious exhibit to date. In Summer 2022, we broke ground on Life, an all-new immersive experience that will tell the story of three ecosystems: Ocean, Rainforest, and Swamp. Each zone will immerse a new generation of guests into the natural world, demonstrating the forces having a negative impact and revealing the positive actions each of us can take to help. Life, presented by Dr. Sarah Layton, will emphasize positive and frequent interactions with nature and animals, fostering the curiosity of our visitors to grow into stewards of our planet. When Life opens to the public in Spring 2024, we will have expanded our animal collection from 45 individual animals to over 250! In preparation for the new exhibit, we have been actively seeking new animals to join us at Orlando Science Center. Some new residents have already arrived, including Capone and Annie, two Burrowing Owls (Athene cunnicularia) who came to the Science Center from other zoological institutions through a Species Survival Plan. Capone and Annie will live in a beautiful new habitat designed specifically for them in the Swamp gallery of Life, where guests will learn more about the challenges of Florida’s threatened species.

Animal ambassadors will provide opportunities for educational programming and meet & greets. They will help to build connections with our visitors and foster a sense of empathy. Our hope is that these encounters will inspire actions that help conserve our shared world, while ensuring world-class care for our animals. We look forward to welcoming you soon to Life! This new exhibit is made possible thanks to substantial funding by the Orange County Mayor, Board of County Commissioners and the Orange County Tourism community. Life is growing thanks to their support and other generous donors, including presenting sponsor Dr. Sarah Layton.
IM PACT N U M B ERS Orlando Science Center reaches hundreds of thousands of people each year as we connect the dots between the fun and wonder of science and its real-world applications. We engage, educate, and inspire others through hands-on exhibits, compelling live shows, and impactful programs delivered on-site and throughout the community. STEM starts here, from our littlest learners to the curious who realize you are never too old to learn something new.

United Arts of Central Florida is supported in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
YOUR GIFT HAS A BIG IMPACT! Did you know Orlando Science Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit? We rely on supporters like you to help fund our exhibits, events, and community outreach. Thanks to our generous donors, Orlando Science Center has had an impact on millions of lives in Central Florida. Nearly 35% of our annual budget comes from supporters who understand the importance of high-quality STEM learning opportunities and want to ensure every child is afforded the opportunity to pursue their aspirations through our engaging and life changing programs like Neighborhood Science.
WHY YOUR GIFT MATTERS
Years after the return to in-person classes after the pandemic, we have not seen solid academic recovery as students struggle to overcome the challenges of learning loss. Our most vulnerable students have been disproportionately impacted, particularly low-income and underserved youth, who have experienced the largest drops. For many children in these communities, access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities is only made possible with your support. Now more than ever, your support of our STEM programs and initiatives can be the spark that changes the course of their lives.
UPDATED
WAYS TO GIVE With your help, Orlando Science Center has been a trusted leader in science education since 1955 – working directly with our community and schools to ensure that every youth has a chance to learn, explore, and dream of what they can become. Your ongoing support provides critical access to educational programming, meaningful experiences, and the opportunity for young minds to ignite their curiosity and creativity, turning their ideas into reality. There are many ways to support Orlando Science Center! For more information, contact us at development@osc.org or 407-514-2183.
