Wild & Free Hair Boutique. . . . . . . . . . . . . 12

Putting the urban in suburban ORLÉANS STAR STAFF – Wild & Free owner Kayleigh Stroz strikes me as a young woman with – excuse my language – her sh*t together. Her dream of opening a upscale yet welcoming salon out here in the suburbs came true in the fall of 2018 and she hasn’t looked back. Pretentious? Nah. As a “mature” (cough, cough) woman, I was tired of “Grrrl Gang” members Jessy, Claudia and Kayleigh feeling like a second-class citizen at hair boutiques. Let’s be honest – a lot of women have left a salon saying, “I love it!” only to burst into tears or rage when they get home. That doesn’t happen here – no matter your age, hair or groove, the stylists at W&F are committed to having you feel – and look – like number one. Just ask the clientele: from CEOs and SAHMs, from bold and edgy, and from modest and simple, women – and men – have discovered that W&F stylists LISTEN. No tears – just happy clients who return. Kayleigh made a name for herself working in upscale salons in downtown Ottawa. When she – with her parents Dawn and David – decided to open her own shop, she started with eight of the best stylists around. That number has grown to 11 already and, judging from the comradery and friendship I see here, they love being part of the W&F family. I’m not going to list all of the services offered at Wild & Free – the ONLY Schwarzkopf Professional PH Level salon in Orléans (wow!) – because they have everything you can imagine. Stop by in person or check out their social media and see why Wild & Free has taken the suburbs by storm.

We treat clients

Suzanne Robinson: A real estate leader for over 50 years When it comes to selecting a real estate agent to help sell your house or find a new home, you should look for experience. With experience comes wisdom and a knowledge of the market that others with less experience may not have. In most cases, experience also comes with a network of contacts that has been built up over the years. In Ottawa, there are very few real estate agents who possess the type of experience that Suzanne Robinson has. The Century 21 broker has been helping clients buy and sell their homes for over 50 years now. In fact, in many cases she is helping a second and third generation of her original clients! When she first started in the real estate business in 1969, there were fewer than 2,500 homes in Orléans – today, there are over 46,000 –and Ottawa has really grown. In all those years, Suzanne’s enthusiasm for her job has not faded one iota. “I like to see houses, I like to visit houses and I like to sell houses! I don’t work because I have to, but because I like it,” says Suzanne who opened one of the first Century 21 offices in Ottawa in 1978. Beyond the innumerable houses she has sold or the multitude of prizes she has won, Suzanne does not hesitate to say that the most important thing she has learned from her half-century in business is the sincere friendships she has forged with her clients. “When you work with people as close as I do and help make their dreams come true, those bonds last for ever. Some of my closest friends started out as clients 30 and 40 years ago,” says Suzanne. As a Century 21 real estate broker, Suzanne has a small army of real estate agents she can count on to help meet her clients’ needs as well as access to a wealth of Century 21 resources. Covering your flooring needs since 1996! A pet store for every member of your family

At Critter Jungle Orléans, they care about your four-legged family members almost as much as you do. They are all pet owners themselves so they know a thing or two about what makes your animal healthy and happy, whether it’s the very best in dog and cat food, or the latest in activity toys and outerwear to keep them warm and safe during those winter walks. They also carry food and supplies for birds, tropical fish and reptiles. For over 33 years, Critter Jungle has been owned and operated by the Stanke family in Hampton Park Plaza in the west end and over 4 years in the Orléans Garden Shopping Centre where Ottawa’s pet owners turn to for knowledge and advice for their pets. Experts in their field, the staff can provide advice on everything from puppy training and dietary needs to advanced reptile and aquarium care. Critter Jungle is well known for offering many unique brands of both canned and dry food, raw pet food and dehydrated and freeze-dried food, and also have organic and all-natural options. The owners’ philosophy is simple, if they won’t feed it to their own pets then they won’t carry it for their customer’s pets. And while they love animals of all types at Critter Jungle, you won’t find cats and dogs for sale at their stores. They believe in pet rescue and adoption and support this by providing space in-store for New Beginnings Pet Rescue where cats are housed until adopted. They also hold a number of events throughout the year to help raise awareness and funds for pet rescue organizations and donate pet food and supplies to help these animals until they find their forever home.

Since first opening for business, Millennium Floor Covering has become a household name in Orléans. It’s by no means an exaggeration to say that hundreds of floors in the area were installed or covered by the good folks at Millennium. Millennium Floor Covering is owned and operated by Orléans residents Richard and Janie Legault. With almost 40 years in the business, Richard knows the value of classic materials. You don’t stay in business for as long as Millennium has without a meaningful commitment to both quality and service. First and foremost, Millennium is blessed with a staff who truly cares about their clients and meeting their needs. The flooring experience usually begins with a visit to their 5,000 ft2 showroom on Vimont Court in the Taylor Creek Business Park. There, you can see and touch their wide range of flooring materials made by such reputable manufacturers and suppliers as Armstrong, Shaw Floors, Olympia Tile + Stone, Beaulieu Canada and Your Home Style. From warm hardwood, ceramic and vinyl to soft and modern carpet, the folks at Millennium can help you decide on the ideal flooring for your space. Besides the more traditional materials, they specialize in the latest flooring materials made of sustainable and environmentally friendly bamboo or cork. The flooring process is then completed by expert installers as only Millennium can provide. Millennium Floor Covering also works with their clients as a qualified ICC Authorized Dealer whenever there is need to cover an insurance claim for flooring replacements. Keeping Orléans motorists on the road for over 25 years

14 • January 23, 2020 • Volume 34, No. 17

Whether you are planning a ski vacation to the Laurentians, the Green Mountain region of Vermont or just the Gatineaus, you should consider taking your car in to Precision Automotive on Vantage Drive for a winter check-up. With 10 bays, four licensed technicians and two apprentice technicians, Precision is the largest service centre in Orléans. They also have the expertise to service any make and model of vehicle. While many people will opt for an oil change at one of a myriad of places that specialize in quick oil changes, the people who normally work at those establishments do not have the type of mechanical expertise that Precision’s technicians have to give your car a thorough inspection. The trained technicians at Precision will check all your fluid conditions and levels, tire condition and pressures as well as all your drive belts and hoses. Nothing can ruin your travel plans more than losing a drive belt or blowing a hose in the middle of nowhere during the winter. Not only is it inconvenient, but it can potentially cost you an expensive towing bill. Besides belts, hoses and tires, a Precision technician can also inspect your brakes, suspension, exhaust and even your heating system. All these things can interfere with the best-laid travel plans. Providing peace of mind for you and your family is what Precision Automotive is all about. Owner Rob Brouwer and his staff have been providing peace of mind, along with honest service and honest value for over 25 years. They offer an industry leading 2-year/40,000km warranty on most newly installed parts and labour. Why not take advantage of their expertise and have your vehicle checked out today to avoid the chance of a possible headache tomorrow? Nothing has the potential to ruin your best laid travel plans like an unexpected mechanical failure that could have been easily prevented by a trip to Precision Automotive. Precision Automotive is located at 385 Vantage Dr, behind the McDonald’s restaurant at Innes and Tenth Line. You can also check out their web site at www.theautopros.ca or call them at 613-841-5550. Happy motoring!

Wine so fine your friends won’t be able to tell the difference

In the world of winemaking, Wine Kitz has earned a reputation for variety, quality and value. Making your own wine at Wine Kitz costs a fraction of what you would pay for the same quality of wine at the LCBO. Best of all, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Step 1 is choosing which wine to make with the help of the staff at the Orléans Wine Kitz location in the Orléans Town Centre on Centrum Blvd. and starting the wine-making process. Step 2 is bottling your wine in as little as four weeks after the initial process. The third and final step is you enjoying your wine with family and friends. Owner Shawn Larkin has been helping Orléans residents make their own wine since 2007. He recently stepped in to help over 100 customers of The Wine Bottega on Tenth Line Road recover their wine after the store unceremoniously closed its doors just days before Christmas. Wine Kitz is associated with Andrew Peller Ltd. which owns and operates several award-winning wineries in Canada including Pellar Shawn Larkin Estates and Trius Winery. That relationship ensures that Wine Kitz uses only the finest ingredients in their wines which they stand behind with a 100% NO HASSLE Satisfaction Guarantee. Besides their Ultra Premium and Premium wines, Wine Kitz also has their recently released Passport Series. Available for a short time from December to March, these exclusive wines celebrate the various wine making regions of the world. The first two releases of the 2020 Passport Series are the Union Red which is a flavourful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc inspired by the Provence region of France, and the Union White which is a classic French blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Both wines are now available at Wine Kitz. Other wines in the series include Dos Grenach, a red wine commonly made in Chiva, Spain which will be released in February and the Carménère Petit Verdot which is a spicy blend of Carménère and Petit Verdot wines from the Curico Valley in Chile that will be released in March. Meatheads is a meatlovers paradise If you love meat, especially the grilled variety served in a brioche bun with your choice of fresh condiments, then you need to visit Meatheads Grill located inside the Quickie store at Trim & Watters in Fallingbrook. Open a little over a month, Meatheads has already gained a cult following among local burger aficionados, thanks primarily to their use of locally sourced beef and super fresh ingredients as well as their prices. A 6-ounce burger with no sides costs just $10 and a half-pound burger is just $13. Add fries and a drink and you pay an extra $2 – poutine and a drink $4. Meatheads is the creation of friends Jessy Brethour and Neil Post, while Nathan Chaput is the master in the kitchen who turns their ideas into delicious burgers and sandwiches that has Facebook buzzing. Their goal was to open a restaurant where the food speaks for itself. They were also committed to supporting other local businesses. For instance, the chuck that goes into every burger is purchased at Lavergne Western Beef on Navan Road. Their signature burgers are the Meathead Classic and the Meathead Deluxe, but they also make a Bacon & Cheese Burger; a Stray Dog Bacon Cheese Burger with double bacon and a chutney-style BBQ sauce made with Stray Dog’s Anytime IPA; a Pulled Pork Burger; and a Mushroom Onion Swiss Melt with Bacon that is quickly becoming one of the most popular items on the menu. Despite being open for so short a time, Meatheads has already been nominated for Best Burger in Ottawa in the Faces magazine 2020 Ottawa Awards. As proof they’re not a one-trick pony, Meatheads has plenty of other options to choose from besides burgers including an Orléans Cheese-steak Sandwich, a Kickin’ Chicken sandwich, a Pulled Pork sandwich, a Big ol’ BLT, and a Grilled Cheese and Bacon sandwich. They also sell wings by the pound either sauced or dusted, hot dogs, pogos, Polish Sausage and chili. And did we mention they make some of the best poutine in the east end? Just add your own toppings and let your imagination be your guide. You can learn more about Meatheads and read some of their many reviews on Facebook at facebook.com/MeatHeadsOrleans/, or you can visit their website at meatheadsgrill.godaddysites.com/. The restaurant is open Monday to Thursday from 11-7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11-9 p.m. and Sundays from 11-7 p.m.

Deep community roots strengthen litigation law firm

The law firm of Augustine Bater Binks LLP might have its offices in downtown Ottawa, but there is no denying its roots in Orléans run deep. Senior counsel Craig Bater is a role model for the firm’s younger lawyers on the value of community service. He was an active member of the Orléans Chamber of Commerce including serving three terms as President. Craig is now a director of the Craig Bater Ottawa Board of Trade. Jonathan Richardson In 2017, he was presented with the Gordon F. When it comes to being healthier longer, you are just one degree away

It was just a year ago that Satpal Singh took over a small restaurant next to the Krown Rustproofing Centre on St. Joseph Blvd. and turned it into one of the best Indian restaurants in the city. The reviews speak for themselves. Out of the 156 reviews on Google, the Mumbai Masala Grill has averaged 4.8 rating out of five. On Facebook they have a five-star rating based on the opinions of 47 visitors. The secret to their success is their commitment to using fresh ingredients and spices and making sure the food gets from the kitchen to your table in quick order. Their lunch buffet is second to none and this month they plan to introduce a Thali lunch menu on Mondays and Tuesdays. Thali is the traditional way food is served in Indian temples. When you order Thali, you’ll get a neatly arranged plate containing two different types of curry, Pakora, rice, Naan bread a papadum and dessert... all for $16.99. When two or more people dine together, you can share four different curries or more. Satpal and Gajender Singh When ordering at the Mumbai Masala Grill, you first choose your meat, fish or prawns and then have it cooked in your choice of curry. Among the selection of curries that can be ordered mild, medium or hot, are Butter; Korma; Coconut; Vindaloo; Saagwala, which is a type of spinach curry; Mango; and Jalfrezi, which is a thick sauce cooked with onions and bell peppers. The regular lunch buffet is served from Wednesday to Friday and is always made the same morning it is served. Among the items you will find in the buffet on most days are Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, Chana Masala, Vegetable Biryani and Onion Bhaji. The Sunday dinner buffet has an even greater variety. Satpal and his wife Priti moved to Orléans in October 2018 to be closer to the restaurant and to raise their family. Satpal’s brother Gajender moved to Orléans from Edmonton last April to join his brother in running the restaurant. At 180º Fitness, they focus on not just living longer, but living longer and being healthy enough to enjoy it. Longevity in terms of being able to get fit, lose weight and stay healthy for the long term is the driving force behind the 180º Fitness Transformation System. Most of us are just one degree away from living a healthy, active lifestyle well into our 80s & beyond. Of course, it’s difficult to think that far ahead when all you want to do is lose that 15 pounds you gained over the holidays, or you’re too busy with work or chasing the kids around to do any real exercise. But think about it: you can make incremental changes now in your diet or your level of fitness that can add five or eight years to your life. Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest impact. That’s why 180º Fitness owner Adrian Delorey is changing his Biggest Loser Program to reflect the desire for longterm change. People can register at any time, Adrian Delorey but they MUST make a 12-month commitment during which time they will workout with other people in the program who have the same goals as themselves. The revamped Biggest Loser Ottawa program is part of Delorey’s goal to help his clients lose one million pounds over the next 10 years. It sounds like a lofty goal, but Delorey estimates that his members lost more than 100,000lbs since opening his doors in 2007 & has his eyes set on 10x’ing that mark over the next decade. The program comes fully equipped with a Nutritionist, Physiotherapist, multiple Kinesiologists & Coaches, a Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach all in your corner ready to guide & encourage you through every obstacle you might face. Get ready to TRANSFORM into an entirely NEW YOU, reprogramed with a NEW IDENTITY packed with UNSTOPPABLE confidence & a PASSION for life. Your Bigger & Brighter future awaits. And if adding 5 to 10 years to your life isn’t motivation enough, Delorey will offer a second year for FREE to anyone who manages to lose 18% of his or her starting body weight during the first year. “It’s a journey of constant improvement. It’s never ending. Our goal is to continue advancing human longevity and specifically to add quality years to the life of our clients. Being fitter and healthier is one thing – staying fitter and healthier is a different kettle of fish altogether. It’s a marathon not a sprint.” To find out how 180 Fitness can help you be the healthiest fittest version of you you can be, not just for a month or a year but for the rest of your life, e-mail adrian@180fitness.ca or call 613-749-2267 Your children and future grandchildren will thank you later!

Country Convenience in the heart of Navan, just minutes from Orléans

As small town institutions go, none are as important to local residents or more tightly woven into the fabric of the community than J.T. Bradley’s Country Convenience Store in Navan. In fact, it is impossible to imagine what the east end community would be like without J.T. Bradley’s. It is the common thread that has tied the community together for the past 122 years. It continues to do so, thanks to its current proprietor John Bradley, the great-grandson of the store’s original owner, J.T. Bradley. The store has undergone a number of transformations over the years. Where once it was a traditional rural general store, J.T. Bradley’s is now much, much more. For one, they are a licensed LCBO outlet with a wide range of liquour, wine and spirits along with a walk-in beer fridge. For another, the store recently expanded to include a Purina Animal Feed component where rural and suburban customers can purchase feed and seed for everything from horses and sheep to cats and dogs and even birds. J.T. Bradley’s carries a complete line of Loyall Premium Pet Food, which is specially formulated for your pet’s John Bradley individual needs. That’s why Loyall’s line of premium dry pet foods includes five dog formulas and one cat formula. Besides animal feed, the LCBO outlet and general groceries, J.T. Bradley’s also sells a number of products from La Binerie Plantagent including Shepherd’s Pie and Lasagna, which make for great last-minute dinner choices. They also sell a number of products from the Villy Bee Honey Co. in Navan including raw honey, lip balm and hand wax. Over the years, J.T. Bradley’s has been a strong supporter of community initiatives including the World Record 50-Horse Hitch, the Navan Streetdance, and the Navan Curling Club. For a true taste of Portugal, visit Restaurante Caravela Since it first opened a little over three years ago, Restaurante Caravela and its owners Fernando and Alzira Diniz, have earned a reputation for delivering healthy, hearty Portuguese cuisine that has earned the establishment a long list of repeat customers for which they are truly grateful. “We have made a lot of good friends since we first opened,” says Fernando. “Many of customers come back two or three times a month.” The long list of regular diners is a tribute to the food and family-friendly service delivered by Diniz and his staff starting with Chef Tom Moore, formerly of El Meson who creates the magic in the kitchen and manager Henrique Sousa who also worked at El Meson for many years. Everyone who visits Portugal returns with three memories – the food, the people and the wine – and that’s what Restaurante Caravela delivers to every customer who passes through its doors. Dining at Restaurante Caravela is like dining at any quality restaurant in Porto, Lisbon, Algarve or the Azores. “We often get compliments from people who have been to Portugal and they tell us that when they eat here they are immediately transported back in time. It’s like reliving their memories all over again,” says Fernando. The menu includes such Portuguese staples as Cataplana, Alcatra, Grilled Octupus, and Salted Cod. Among the new additions are Shrimps & Scallops in white wine sauce; and Cod with onions and peppers topped with mashed potatoes. They also have an extensive lunch menu with 13 main courses served Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Restaurante Caravela is located at 3712 Innes Rd. in the mall next to the Landmark Theatre.

When St. Martha’s Brasserie d’Orléans first opened its doors in October 2012, it was a breath of fresh air in a community that was devoid of any true fine dining establishments. Since then, a number of excellent eateries have joined its ranks, making Orléans a true destination for lovers of fine food. Over the past seven plus years, St. Martha’s has remained at the top of its game, thanks largely to its willingness to explore new flavour profiles and embrace change, all the while staying true to its desire to offer its customers “rustic refinement”. The restaurant’s latest menu, created by Chef Mike Gaumond, relies on a lot of Norse and aboriginal flavours and uses a lot of smoke, winter seasonal greens and root vegetables, nuts, and sheep’s milk cheese. Everything on the menu is made with ingredients sourced within a 600 km radius of Orléans. In order to ensure the quality of his proteins, Chef Gaumond purchases his pork and chicken from Hidden Trails Farm near the LaRose Forest The difference is in the flavours. Chef Mike Gaumond Take the Tartines aux champignon et oeuf de caille, for instance. The appetizer consists of wilted roquette, or arugula, and wild mushrooms tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette on toast and topped with a quail egg and sheep’s milk cheese. Or the spinach ravioli which is served in a nutmeg and cognac cream sauce topped with toasted walnuts and crispy prosciutto. Among the new entrées is the Choucroute garnie which consists of wild boar sausage and ham served with house made braised red cabbage and baby red potatoes poached in milk and butter. The Côtelette du porc is a 10-ounce, bone-in smoked pork chop grilled with a bourbon and maple reduction and served with seasonal potatoes and root vegetables. Another early favourite is the Cassoulet which is a rich, slow cooked ragout casserole made with white beans, pork belly and duck confit and topped with two lamb chops. Chef Gaumond has also put a new twist on St. Martha’s popular Confit de canard by serving it on a charred onion risotto with a blueberry and spruce reduction served with seasonal potatoes and root vegetables, and he’s replaced the Beau’s Burger on the menu with a new burger made from hand-chopped Angus beef served on a brioche bun with a house made onion chutney, lettuce, tomato, bacon and cheese. These are hearty, rich dishes that are perfect on a cold winter’s night with a full-bodied red wine. There are many other new items on the menu but you have to reserve your table to try them for yourself. They also continue to have one of the best breakfast and brunch menus in the city featuring the Brasserie Benedict consisting of two poached eggs and your choice of Lavernge ham or bacon on an English muffin topped with a silky tarragon hollandaise sauce and served with a salad or thick cut seasoned home fries and fruit. To view the new menu in its entirety visit www.goodfoodservedwell.com.

Opened just over a year ago, Bite Burger continues to serve some of the most original gourmet burgers in the city. As their motto attests – they really do take burgers to a whole new level. Each burger starts with eight ounces of 100 per cent gluten-free ground chuck and are served on a fresh brioche bun, which can also be ordered gluten free for an additional dollar. JOB OPPORTUNITY 180 Fitness is expanding! 180 Fitness located in the Canotek Business Park looking for that SUPERSTAR who knows how to inspire people to commit to themselves through compliance toward exercise and nutrition. Using our tools and your personal knowledge you’ll be committed to helping people become the best versions of themselves. Here’s a little information on what we’re looking for... The best coaches are fanatical self-studies and always learning new things. They are either outgoing and highly energetic, or passionately humble and convey a strong sense of empathy. Either way they are adept at connecting one-on-one or in groups making people feel comfortable enough to trust them and to to turn to them for support. They will take pride in enriching someone else’s life and be genuinely committed to doing everything they can to help. (aka phone calls, emails, facebook and text messages sometimes on a daily basis. Thinking outside the box and using creativity to encourage a smile and empower their clients to believe “I can.”) The best coaches realize the real job is outside of the training session, it’s in the planning, learning, encouraging, and following up that inspires their clients to modify their behaviours in the other 23 hours a day! (HINT: The most successful coaches make their clients feel as though their coach is always available, but know that after an impression is established the client won’t often need them unexpectedly.) You will spend most of your time: Following up, communicating with them helping them believe in themselves, encouraging them, and most importantly reviewing their nutrition. You will guide them through the next simple steps in our resources and follow up frequently to ensure their compliance. You will need to do so creatively and with a strong use of technology (batch texting, managing our private facebook group, meeting in a live group setting) as you will be expected to manage a broad client base of a few hundred people at a time. You will be someone who also continues to research and learn about health, fitness and how the body works. We are looking for self starters; if you’re someone that needs a lot of hand holding and explanation this isn’t the place for you. We are looking for someone who knows how to motivate people and get them to commit. Within our organization there’s opportunities to grow into sales and management within our facility or online. Additionally, you’ll have access to opportunities to travel to some of the industry’s top events or have continuing education paid for by us.
