2019 Kids’ Camps WHY SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO CAMP?

By Mike Beasley Have you ever wondered why parents send their kids to summer camp?

Back in the day, going to summer camp meant travelling somewhere deep in the woods to stay in a cabin or tent, paddle a canoe, see wildlife and sing songs by the camp fire.

That seemed to be a part of almost every child’s summer.The readers who are 40 or older can probably relate to those quasi-fun-filled, sun burnt and blackfly-bitten summers.

Those getaways are now labelled as traditional camps, which blend a variety of sports, the wilderness, creative arts and special activities into their programs.

In this day and age, summer camps cater to just about every need or wish.

You can sign your children up for a tripping camp with the focus on the wild and canoeing to a new campsite every night.

Still not doing anything for you? Then why not send you daughter to Girl Guide Camp or son to Boy Scout Camp?

If that’s still not working, then why not try a computer camp which is painful to suggest, because these days too many youngsters seem to spend hours – even days – on their electronic devices.

There are camps to practice a sport, arts and drama camps, ones to learn new languages, photography camps, and even circus camps.

And yes, there are family camps which enable families to get out and enjoy nature and activities together.

Thankfully, everybody is included in themed camps with the advent of physical disability/learning/mental disability and/or developmental delay camps.

If a family is burdened with the cost of sending several kids away for a couple of weeks, then subsidized camps may be the answer. They are defined as a division of the traditional camps but provide scholarships and discounts for underprivileged youth and offer a similar program.

Theatre study fosters cooperation, teamwork, creative thinking and selfawareness. Theatre creates good people, improves study habits and self-confidence.

School of Rock is a world-wide leader in Performance based music instruction.

What does that mean? Students want to learn how to play songs, not just notes and scales. Most of our programs combine weekly one-on-one private lessons with weekly group rehearsals.

Why? When someone wants to get into music, they want to play songs they like or they want to create their own music.

Playing with others makes this possible.

Think of hockey or soccer – if all you ever did was practice drills then you would never experience the thrill of playing on a team and the comradery of working towards something together. Music is also a Team Sport!

We go beyond creating the band environment – our students play real gigs.

Our bands have played at Grey Cup week, Ottawa Senators games, Hope Beach Volleyball, plus many school and local fundraisers where students get to show their chops in front of their peers.

In addition to all the year round programs mentioned above, we are offering a one week camp in March plus 5 one week camps in July. For 7-11 year olds, think of the camps as a mini Rock 101 program.

We combine group plus 1:1 instruction, lots of other rock and roll activities and a “concert” at the end of the week.

The cool thing about School of Rock programs, and music in general, is that no experience is needed. The team approach ensures that new students are welcomed and encouraged by current students and as the student grows in ability they are offered more prominent parts in their songs.

Our instructors are the best in the city, bar none, and we are proud of our facilities. With two rehearsal studios, six individual lesson rooms and all the gear, for those who may have never picked up an instrument before or are seasoned pros, we are sure to be able to satisfy your thirst for music.

We start rockers as young as 2 with our Little Wing program. From there they move into Rookies (ages 6-7) where students start to move towards an instrument that they would like to master.

After Rookies comes Rock 101 (ages 7-11) where students have picked their instrument and begin weekly rehearsals as a band. Our Performance program, for ages 11-17, also combines a weekly rehearsal with weekly private lessons and a mind-blowing season ending show every four months or so. For those students who want even more, the School

of Rock House Band plays events like the Capital Fair- where they performed daily for an entire week! To top it off we even have boot camps for adults – proving that you are never too old to rock!

A parent’s recent message to us: “My daughter is in her second year of participating in classes at Ottawa School of Theatre. She absolutely loves attending and always looks forward to being able to perform off and on stage. She is a very creative individual and these classes have allowed her to express herself through acting, dancing and singing. Ottawa School Of Art THE OTTAWA SCHOOL OF ART IS THE LEADING CENTRE FOR VISUAL ARTS EDUCATION AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION IN THE OTTAWA REGION Children aged 6 to 15 will embark on an exciting hands-on exploration of a variety of artistic mediums, themes and styles. Our camps, which are taught by professional artists, provide students with access to a variety of art materials, included in the costs of the camps.

Après 39 ans, le Club de gymnastique Les Sittelles a plusieurs raisons de célébrer, notamment, nos racines dans la communauté francophone, ainsi que le dévouement et l’engagement de nos membres. Plus que tout, nous célébrons la réussite de nos athlètes, soit les centaines, voire milliers de personnes qui sont passées par le Club de gymnastique Les Sittelles et ont relevé des défis personnels.

2019 Kids’ Camps AIR-EAU-BOIS C’est apprendre à vivre en pleine nature. C’est découvrir les plaisirs de dormir sous les étoiles. C’est une expérience chaleureuse de vie de camp pendant que de nouvelles amitiés se forgent autour du feu de camp.

C’est un séjour en camp de vacances d’été axé sur les bienfaits de la vie de groupe et les rudiments du plein air.

OPUS Academy is busy preparing for its 10th year of exciting summer camps!

That’s ten years of original, music-based programs promoting creativity and enriched learning.

Back by popular demand, Musical Theatre camp taps into your child’s singing, acting and team building skills.

Rock band camp explores instrumental, vocal and performance skills necessary to jam in a real band.

Opus also offers the regular camp, which is an enriched camp that introduces younger children to music through interactive games, thematic arts and crafts and creative physical activities to get little bodies moving and shaking.

Campers will be exposed to a variety of musical genres as well as playing and building instruments.

Don’t be surprised if your child is inspired to continue with music lessons in September. Exposure to music, especially through lessons is extremely beneficial to a growing mind.

At Opus, we run Musical Theatre programs year round as well as Adult and Children’s choirs. 2019 Kids’ Camps How to Choose a Summer Camp Your child’s interests What does your child like to do? Children know what they like and don’t like. Ask them for their input. If your child is active and loves to play sports, a sports camp is probably right for him or her. If your child is creative, then choose a camp that offers arts and crafts. Camp choices are as varied as children themselves. Choose a camp with the specific focus geared toward your child.

Day Camp versus Overnight Camp Depending on the age, maturity and independence of your child, he or she may or may not be ready for an overnight camp. Some overnight camps accept children as young as six years old. Only you can decide when the time is right.

Research With pencil in hand, contact the camps you are considering and ask some specific questions. Not all camps are created equal, so ask the same questions to each camp director and compare their answers. You need to feel comfortable with their answers before you make your choice.

Camp directors are used to answering questions about every detail of camp. If you don’t get the answers you are looking for, keep searching. You need to feel good about your decision. After all, you want your child to have an awesome camp experience that will forge memories to last a lifetime.

2019 Kids’ Camps The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club Summer fun, friendship and skill-building start at the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club’s (ONEC) multi-sport Summer Day Camps!

Designed for children of any skill level (aged 7-17), they feature tennis, sailing, rowing, canoeing and stand-up paddle-boarding in various combinations. The camps run from July 2 to August 23, 2019, on week days from 9 am – 4 pm on a half or on a full-day basis and for one to four weeks. Pre and post camp supervision is available.

All instructors are certified.

ONEC’s Sailing Camp uses the CANSail progressive certification from levels 1-4. CANSail 1 takes a full-day week; CANSail 2 takes two to three weeks; CANSail 3 & 4 each take four to six weeks; all participants must sign up for fullday sailing camps.

Shenkman Arts Centre a few. Children start the day in one of the centre’s specialized studios but there are also plenty of opportunities to get outside. Classes offer the opportunity to film in the sunshine, watch a performance as part of the exciting summer series on the Agora Minto-Orléans outdoor plaza, draw, eat lunch in the fresh air, or just blow off some steam. Some camps have organized outings to local pools, and parks.

ONEC’s Watersports offer ‘Rowing Adventures’ in the morning through which Row Canada’s Journey 1 & 2 certification is attained and Paddling Adventures in the afternoon when campers learn to canoe and use stand-up paddleboards.

ONEC’s Tennis Camps are a great way to get your child interested in tennis or to build on the skills they already possess. Participants learn stroke basics, game strategy, footwork, sportsmanship and receive an ONEC Summer Day Camp t-shirt. Structured off-court activities are also organized.

2019 Kids’ Camps

Wynbrook Riding School Is your child crazy about horses and ponies? If you are looking for total horse immersion and a dream-cometrue for your child, then Summer Camp at Wynbrook Farm is the place to be this summer!

Now in our 33rd season, Wynbrook Farms is offering a two-week camp for children aged 7 to 14. The two-week session will run from Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12 and from Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19.

During the camp, participants will develop a bond with the horse or pony they will be paired with for the week and they will learn the basics of horsemanship, grooming, handling and practical horse care.

The children will ride twice daily with a morning instructional lesson and an afternoon “pony game” which could include mounted games, bareback, trail riding etc. Day Camp activities also include nature hikes, arts and crafts, trampoline, and scavenger hunts.

On the final day of the camp, the children will perform a “horse show”

for their parents and friends to enjoy as they demonstrate the skills they have learned at camp. All campers will receive a camp T-shirt as well as their very first horse show ribbon as a keepsake of their time spent at Wynbrook Farm.

The 2019 fee remains the same as in previous years: $870 + HST, and we limit our enrollment to 20 children.

With a team of 4-5 staff members, we are able to maintain our standards of safety and professional care as high as ever.

All campers are required to have their own riding pants (breeches or leggings) and paddock (or equivalent) boots with a small heel.

Camp activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. and we can help arrange for car-pooling, early drop offs or late pick-ups should that be necessary.
