By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Organizers are making the final preparations for this year’s Navan Fair which gets underway his Thursday at the Navan Fairgrounds.

The theme of this year’s Fair is “Chasin’ Country Rainbow”, and many of last year`s attractions are back by popular demand plus a few new attractions. The 78th Fraser Highlanders will once gain perfrom their team musket demonstration on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and the Baby Show will take place at the same time on Sunday on the second floor of the Navan Arena.

Two new attractions should be a surefire hit with the kids. The Rock the Arts Puppet

Show will take place at 12 p.m. 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday in the Navan Curling Club and again at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Fair officially opens on Thursday, at 4 p.m. when traditionally all the rides are just a twonie. Animal lovers can see the Jersey Dairy Cattle Show in the Navan Arena at 6 p.m. and Ayrshire and Holstein Cattle Show at 7 p.m. which is the same time the Navan Fair Ambassador will be announced in the Navan Community Hall on the second floor of the arena.

But the opening day highlight will be the demolition derby which traditionally attracts huge crowds.

Plenty to see and do at this year’s Navan Fair Continued from page 1 Thursday night is reserved for the smaller four-cylinder cars while the larger six-cylinder vehicles will do battle on Friday night. Both events get underway at 7 p.m.

After the demolition derby, cover band Blackshire will keep things rocking under the Domes. The four-member cover band plays a mix of classic rock, pop, and country music.

Canadian alternative rockers 54-40 will take to the stage on Friday night. The B.C. band will playsome of their classics including Babby Ran, I Go Blind and Ocean Pearl.

Another highlight on Friday will be three performances by the high-flying Ultimutts stunt dog show. These amazing canines are at the centre of a show that is fast-paced, interactive, heart-warming and hilarious. The Ultimutts will also perform three times on Saturday and Sunday.

Inside the Navan Arena on Friday, preliminary judging will be done in the Heavy Horse Harness Classes at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, visitors to the midway on Friday will be able to purchase a wristband for $30 which will allow them to enjoy limitless rides for the entire day.

Saturday’s schedule of events will kick

off with the annual Navan Fair breakfast from 8-11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Hall on Colonial Road. The annual Navan Fair Parade will get underway at 10:45 a.m. along Colonial Road, while inside the arena judging will proceed in the Heavy Horse Show at 9 a.m. and the Heavy Horse Harness Classes at 11 a.m. They will be followed into the arena by the light horses at 12:30 p.m. which is also the same time the Tractor and Truck Pull will begin outside behind the demolition derby pit.

At 12:30 p.m. the 78th Fraser Highlanders will perform their musket demonstration under the Domes.

Saturday’s grandstand will be kicked off by the Chtis Buck Band at 9 p.m. They will be followed on stage by country music artist Meghan Patrick.

The Fair will come to a close on Sunday with a series of performances by The Richmond Ramblers at 1 p.m., The Irish Descendants at 2:30 p.m., and The Washboard Union at 4 p.m.

Sunday’s lineup will also feature the popular Baby Show at 11 a.m. on the second floor of the arena, and two performances by the Ultimutts at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Orleans Star has joined other members of the Ontario Community Newspaper Association in launching a “Friends of...” initiative. You may have noticed the series “Friends of the Orléans Star” notices that have appeared in the last three editions of the paper. `The “Friends of the Orléans Star” is an opportunity for readers to join other supporters of the newspaper in helping to safeguard its ongoing success.

I am often asked by readers, especially long time readers, how the paper can continue to be distributed for free during a period when many traditional newspapers in other parts of Ontario and right here in Ottawa are disappearing.

The answer is simple – we are blessed with a number of advertisers who understand and appreciate the importance of a local newspaper to the community it serves. In short, local newspapers form the life blood of the community, or at least the good ones do.

We also keep a tight handle on costs, or at least the ones we can control. The challenge traditional newspapers face is that they have little or no control of their largest expense – printing. Printing costs have doubled and in some cases tripled in the last 15-20 years, while advertising revenues have remained relatively stagnant by comparison.

Many readers may be surprised to learn that it costs roughly $18,000 to produce a 24-page paper and distribute it free of charge to 44,350 homes, which is our current circulation.

Since we do our best to run the paper with a 50-50 split in advertising to editorial pages it means that we need to sell 12 pages of ads in order to break even. Some weeks we run more than 24 pages and some weeks we run fewer. The goal during the course of the year is for everything to balance out, and so far, we’ve managed to do just that in spite of the many challenges we face.

The best way for readers to join the effort in maintaining the viability of the Orleans Star is to become a “friends”.

In exchange for a minimum annual contribution of $50, “friends” will be eligible for a monthly draw for a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant. They will receive the electronic version of the paper 24 hours before the regular home delivery and they will be eligible to receive discounts and other incentives from advertisers who wish to participate in the initiative.

They can also take pride in knowing that they are doing a small part in maintaining a local institution.

Of course the easiest way to support the paper is to support the businesses that advertise within these pages and together we will ensure that the Orléans Star will be around for a very long time.

Students should pay for their own education To the editor: My name is Karina Alce, I am a second year student at Algonquin college. I was reading the article Ruthless published in the Orleans Star by the editor Fred Sherwin.

This article to me was very biased and one sided. It claimed that college students will lose their founds and will hence not be able to afford college or Universities.

I am part of the group that falls in the middle/ lower class. I am happy that they are giving less.

My parents are not paying for my education I am.

During school I had two jobs and was still able to make it on to the honours list for my first year.

The government should not have to pay for the education that I want. It is called hard work and dedication. The OSAP system was also very flawed and did not really help students. It s based off of your parent`s income and nothing else.

I had many friends whose parents make good money and so they receive nothing from OSAP, but they were paying their own education without needing their parents.

I took a year off after high school and worked almost full-time. I was able to put money aside and I will be doing three years of college and coming out dept free.

I do not think it should be up to taxpayers to pay for everyones post secondary education.

We live were jobs are plenty and the need for hard workers is always accessible. This article was completely the wrong opinion.

The problem wih this generations is that they want everything for free, and do not want to work for it. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I know that some people have more wealth and with that more privilege then others, but I am happy that I am less privileged because it taught me to work hard for the things I want in life.

Star scribe offers early primer on fall federal election Depending on when you read this column, it will be 75 days (or less) until the next federal election when eligible voters will cast their ballots on October 21st.

As a lifelong politico and partisan – full disclosure, I was the federal Conservative candidate in Orleans in 2004 – I have no idea who will win our riding or what will happen on the national scene. That is the beauty and frustration of democracy: campaigns matter and I know it from firsthand experience, big time!

Just look back to the 2015 campaign, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal party were running a distant third to the Stephen Harper’s Conservatives and Thomas Mulcair’s NDP when the writ was dropped for a gruelling 76-day campaign on August 4th yet Trudeau and his team formed a majority government.

To be clear, this column will not stump for one candidate or one party over another, rather it is an attempt to layout some observations – based on political consensus and what the polls tell us today – of what is likely to transpire this fall during the federal campaign.

As of today, the governing Liberals and opposition Conservatives are statistically tied given what consecutive national polls (Ipsos, Nanos, Ekos and others) have yielded since late-June with neither party poised to form a majority government. But

to paraphrase former Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker, polls are for dogs.

The other big unknown for campaign 2019 is whether Jagmeet Singh and his NDP can soar back to the 2011 official opposition status (or more?) achieved

by Jack Layton or, as the polls presently indicate, be overtaken by the Greens and a resurgent Bloc Quebecois in terms of House of Commons seats won post October 21st.

Then there is Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party that looks as though it may field a full-slate of 338 candidates but is still only registering between 1% and 2% support in today’s polls.

The unknowns are infinite, yet the campaign narrative is being defined. The Liberals, with four years in government, must defend their record without question.

They will work to frame it as a work in progress pointing to their social, cultural, climate and economic policy successes … according to them. Look for repeated

soundbites and commercials on TV, radio, and online about a growing middle class, historic employment levels, trade deals success and a commitment to fighting climate change. On the other side of this campaign coin, expect Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to assert that Mr. Trudeau is not-one-of-so-he-cannot understand the middle class and they will heap on some international trip embarrassments and portray the government’s economic success narrative as selective at best. Look for them to also drive some regional disparities – like our troubled traditional energy sector in Western Canada – and if NAFTA 2.0 or USMCA or CUSMA whatever you want to call it is not signed south of the border, well you get the picture.

For their part, the NDP will try and regain the traditional left from the Liberals and show themselves as the real deal with an unabashed tax-and-spend platform offering the proverbial chicken in every pot with free drugs, dental care, and daycare whether directly delivered by the federal government or via a no-limit credit card of transfers to provincial and territorial governments.

While each party will likely pledge to eschew the negative, attack and destroy their opponent tactics that turn so many folks away from politics, sadly none of them will adhere to or uphold this pledge.

Chasin’ a Country Rainbow

And the explanation is simple, attack ads work. Of course each of the main parties (Liberal, Conservative, and NDP) will run some positive and rosy ads to portray their leader as a nice guy. As for their blatant attack ads, they will respond that these are mere factual contrasts to inform and educate voters … and most of will categorize these explanations as bovine fecal matter, sigh.

As for the Greens and the People’s Party, I have no insights into their messages or financial capacity to punch through in any meaningful way to influence the coming campaign. But this is an early August view, much can change over two months.

A major domestic shock, international crisis, terrorist incident on our soil, natural disaster or new political scandal can change the campaign dynamic very quickly.

Moreover, a boneheaded tweet, video, or comment from an unknown candidate in the riding of north-what neighbourhoodis that, a way offside news release or supposedly off-the-record comment from a campaign official to a journalist could rear its ugly head at 3 a.m. some five days or less before the October 21st vote. Yes, campaigns matter.

Lastly please remember, if you do not engage in democracy you are destined to be governed by your inferiors as Plato noted over 2,500 years ago.

A check up for Petrie Island – you can help

By Sherry Nigro Friends of Petrie Island When you go for your check up, what happens? You answer a few questions, get your blood pressure and weight measured, the doctor listens to your chest, orders some blood work and make sure your vaccines are up to date. Now, what about a check up for an ecological preserve like Petrie Island?

It starts with getting information from volunteers and visitors about areas of concern. If necessary, experts are consulted. This spring one Facebook member reported finding several dead snapping turtles while paddling around the channels and bays. A consultation with a local turtle expert suggested these were likely natural deaths that were washed down river by the unusual flooding.

Measuring things over time is key to monitoring how the Island is doing. For years, basking turtle counts (a manual count of turtles that are sunning themselves on logs) have been collected by the Friends of Petrie Island (the volunteer organization that works to protect the health and environmental integrity of the Island) to monitor the health of local turtle populations. Wood duck nests, turtle nests, park attendance, bags of garbage, and tracking water quality reports, are all examples of measurements that are used to tell a story about the Island’s health.

Occasionally a comprehensive check up is warranted.

There have been several significant environmental reports that examined water and soil quality, biodiversity (animals and plants) and impacts from human activity.

The last study was done in 2011 and reassured that the current approach of passive recreation in the ecological

reserve did not significantly affect the overall number and variety of animals and plants on the Island.

One of the biggest assets of Petrie Island is the biodiversity: 130 species of birds; 320 types of trees and plants with over two dozen being regionally significant; reptiles; amphibians; mammals; fish; insects. It is critical to monitor how these populations are doing, particularly in light of threats like flooding, invasive species and increased human traffic on the Ottawa River and on the Island. This summer, the Friends are collaborating with the Ottawa Stewardship Council and the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club to undertake a robust inventory of trees on the Island. In particular there is concern for the rare hackberry and butternut trees; for majestic cottonwoods falling to beaver predation and to understand the impact of emerald ash borer and other invasive species.

You can help. Volunteers are needed to help with the tree inventory which is planned for Saturday August 17 and Sunday August 18 from 8:45 to 3:00 pm. We need volunteers to help measure and record the data. This is a great opportunity to learn about trees and the natural history of Petrie Island! Pre-registration for volunteers is required. Trees serve as habitat for birds, mammals, and insects; they prevent erosion; they clean the air and provide shade; they are magical to look at.

STAR STAFF – The community of Orléans is made up of a collection of neighbourhoods in Ottawa’s far east end.

Neighbourhoods such as Convent Glen, Orleans Wood, Chapel Hill, Queenswood Heights, Fallingbrook and Chatelaine Village were formally part of the municipalities of Gloucester and Cumberland. In fact, the border between the two former cities ran through the centre of what, over the years, came to be known as Orléans.

The name Orléans was given to the community by Jean-Théodore Besserer who was the first postmaster of Orléans in 1860. Besserer was born on the Île d’Orléans in Québec and so he gave the fledgling community the name of his native island.

Originally, the name “Orléans” comes from a city of the same name in France which is the birthplace of Joan of Arc. The community started out as the Parish of St. Joseph de Gloucester in 1860.

The first known settlers to the area were François Dupuis, a veteran of the War of 1812, and Joseph Vézina, also known as Viseneau, who arrived in the area about 30 years before it became a parish. Other early settlers included the Major, Besserer and Duford families. The first anglophone

families to settle in the area were the McNeelys and the Kennys.

In 1860, Father Alphonse-Marius Chaîne was appointed resident priest of the new Saint-Joseph d’Orléans parish.

Construction of the first church was completed in 1885. It had to be demolished in 1920 for structural reasons and a new church was erected on the same site over the next two years.

In 1922, the Police Village of Orléans was formed with a council consisting of three volunteers elected to preserve peace, health and public safety. At that time, the village was part of Gloucester Township.

In 1930, the Police Village borrowed $3,800 to build a sidewalk from Champlain Street to Cousineau Street. And in 1957 the Village Council successfully petitioned to have the name of Ottawa Street changed to St. Joseph Blvd.

The Police Village was eventually abolished in 1974 and Orléans was left divided – one half in the municipality of Gloucester and the other half in the municipality of Cumberland.

In its earliest days – and right up until the mid-20th century – Orléans was a predominantly French-speaking community. In 1849 the population of

the area was approximately 50 people.

Within 50 years the area would see the construction of its first hotel, its first post office and its first school. But it wasn’t until the 1980s that the community really boomed.

During the early to mid 80s, Orléans was the fastest growing community in Canada. Over that period the population almost doubled. Today, Orléans is home to more than 115,000 inhabitants.

The residents of Orléans have a lot be proud, but there is a lot to look forward to as well. The future is very bright indeed.

Providing a strong voice on city council STAR STAFF — When it comes to our local political representatives, the last 12 months can be summed up in one word – change. Like the East Block on Parliament Hill the East Block that is made up of our local city councillors, MP and MPP is under renovation.

Last fall, the residents in Innes Ward and Orleans Ward elected first time city councillors in Laura Dudas and Matt Luloff while the residents in Cumberland Ward re-elected Stephen Blais for a third term.

At the provincial level the current incumbent, Marie-France Lalonde, is locked in a race to seek the federal Liberal nomination to replace Andrew Leslie who is stepping down after serving just one term in office. Should Lalonde win the nomination, she will have to resign her seat in the provincial legislature to focus her attention on the General Election. As a result, a provincial byelection will have to be held this winter to chose a new MPP. At the municipal level the east end is divided into four wards, Beacon HillCyrville Ward includes the neighbourhoods of Beacon Hill, Cyrville and Pineview; Innes Ward is made up of Blackburn Hamlet, Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill North and Chateauneuf; Orléans Ward consists of Queenswood Heights, Fallingbrook, Convent Glen, Orleans Wood, Chatelaine Village and Springridge; and Cumberland Ward is made up of South Fallingbrook, Avalon and rural Cumberland.

After getting elected last fall Luloff and Dudas were both named as deputy mayors.

Matt Luloff is a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan in 2008. In winning a seat on city council, he managed to beat out 16 other contenders.

Laura Dudas is a former journalist

and communications officer for the City of Ottawa. After finishing second to Jody Mitic in the 2014 municipal election, she decided to run again in 2018 against François Trépanier, Donna Gudbranson and Tammy Lynch and won.

Blais was easily reelected after running on his record of accomplishments that include a massive expansion of Millennium Park; pushing for an accelerated timeline for LRT Phase 2; securing funding for traffic cameras on school buses and the François Dupuis Recreation Complex in Avalon.

Councillor Tim Tierney was first elected to represent Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward in 2010 when he defeated longtime councillor Michel Bellemare. One of his proudest accomplishments was in having the aging Potvin Arena replaced by the state-of-the-art Richcraft Sensplex in 2014.

All four east end councillors make a concerted effort to be as approachable and helpful to their constituents as possible, as do both Andrew Leslie and Marie-France Lalonde as the local MP and MPP respectively. STAR STAFF – When it comes to motorcycles and all terrain vehicles, the folks at Wheelsport on Youville Drive have been meeting the needs of east end residents for more than 45 years.

Founded by Fred Kolman in 1972, the very first Wheelsport was located at Montreal and Blair. When Fred’s son Jim took over the business in 2000, they moved to their current location on Youville Drive and haven’t looked back.

Over 80 per cent of the company’s business comes from repeat customers.

“We have customers who are on their fourth or fifth bike,” says Jim Kolman, “and now their kids are buying bikes from us.”

The progression from one generation to the next is even reflected in the Kolman family. Jim’s son Benjamin started working at the dealership three years ago and is now heavily involved in the store’s marketing.

Wheelsport specializes in the KTM line of bikes, but they also sell Yamaha and Suzuki motorcycles, Vespa and Piaggo scooters and CFMoto ATVs and side by sides.

The Kolman family are also huge offroad enthusiasts, which explains the vast selection of off-road bikes they have in

their showroom.

Wheelsport also buys and sells preowned bikes and they have an extensive selection of accessories, helmets and outerwear.

Asked how the east end motorcycle community has evolved over the years, Kolman is quick to point to the increasing number of women who have taken up the pastime.

“The number of women who have gotten into motorcycling has really grown, especially in Orléans,” says Kolman. “And they’re different than men. They’re a lot more detail oriented, so we have all the different colours and models and we try to accommodate them as best we can.”

The folks at Wheelsport have also seen an increase in more mature riders who are getting into motorcycling in their mid- to late 50s.

Besides sales, Wheelsport is the place to go for service and repairs on virtually every type and model. They have the equipment and experience to get your motorcycle or scooter, ATV and snowmobile in prime shape, whether you’re riding for pleasure, racing around the track, or tearing it up on the trail. Providing a helping hand in times of crisis STAR STAFF — Like many other bedroom communities in Canada, Orléans has its share of residents who, for various reasons, need help in times of crisis.

Whether they are the victims of domestic abuse, new arrivals to Canada, or experiencing financial hardship, residents in need have not one, but two agencies they can turn to in the east end.

The Orléans Cumberland Community Resource Centre (OCCRC), located on Centrum Boulevard in Orléans Town Centre, serves residents living in the former municipality of Cumberland which includes Queenswood Heights, Fallingbrook, Cardinal Creek, Orleans Wood, Chatelaine Village and Avalon, while the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre, located in the Gloucester Centre, serves residents living in the former municipality of Gloucester, which includes the communities of Beacon Hill, Blackburn Hamlet, Chateauneuf, Chapel Hill and Convent Glen.

Both Resource Centres provide services and programs for youth, teenagers and families and both agencies operate an Early Years drop-in centre. In addition, the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre provides services and programs

for seniors and adults with physical disabilities in both jurisdictions including Meals on Wheels.

The Orléans Cumberland Community Resource Centre also operates a food bank which provides emergency food supplies meant to last for 2-4 days. Families are limited to one visit per month.

The Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre refers individuals and families in need of emergency food supplies to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard located at 2040 Arrowsmith Dr. which operates under the same rules.

Both resources centres are able to provide services to residents in need thanks in large part to the generosity and dedication of dozens donors, and community groups which hold fundraising events throughout the year.

The single biggest donor to the Orléans Cumberland foodbank are the students at St. Peter Catholic High School who collect tens of thousands of food items during their annual Canley Cup food drive every spring.

The OCCRC has several programs in which local businesses and individuals can contribute directly to the agency, the biggest being the Community Caring

Like the OCCRC, the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre is largely dependent on third party fundraising efforts. They also organize their own fundraising events, the

biggest of which is their charity auction and dinner held every spring.

Francophone institutions flourish in Orléans STAR STAFF – From it’s earliest days, Orléans has always been proud of its francophone heritage.

In the 2016 Census, over 30 per cent of Orléans residents indicated French as their mother tongue with many more identifying themselves as Francophiles, or possessing the ability to speak and understand French.

It is this bilingual character which makes Orléans so special.

The francophone community in Orléans has worked hard to establish and maintain key institutions like the Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans (MIFO) and the Rendez-vous des aînés francophones d’Ottawa (RAFO).

Founded in 1983, MIFO is the cultural wellspring of the local francophone population in Orléans. The organization provides a wealth of programs and community services including seniors programs; summer camps; and a beforeand after-school program.

The MIFO cultural centre on Carrière Street is home to the Centre SéraphinMarion d’Orléans which provides activities for francophone seniors.

MIFO is also responsible for bringing French language performers, comedians and theatre performances to the Shenkman

Arts Centre.

The Rendez-vous des aînés francophones d’Ottawa (RAFO) is the largest francophone seniors club in Orléans.

Located at 3499 Navan Rd., the club offers a variety of activities throughout the week, as well as special events and outings.

One of their more popular activities is their Sunday breakfast and their Tuesday and Thursday lunches.

Another important francophone institution in Orléans is the Société francoontarienne du patrimoine et de l’histoire d’Orléans, or SFOPHO for short.

The group is responsible for convincing the city to name many of the local streets and parks after important francophone figures who played an key role in building the community.

They also joined forces with the Heart of Orléans BIA to establish a series of 27 historic plaques along St-Joseph Boulevard marking buildings and places of historic importance.

While MIFO is the wellspring of francophone culture in Orléans and SFOPHO is the guardians of its heritage, the Église Saint-Joseph d’Orléans is it’s heart and soul.

Festivals, fairs and fun days = good times the calendar last year with the inaugural Orléans Craft Beer Festival which takes place during the first weekend in June.

This year’s festival was an unmitigated success with several thousand people event in the Orléans Festival Plaza on Centrum Boulevard.

Other highlights during the year include the Petrie Island Canada Day Celebration, which brings together local residents to celebrate Canada’s birthday, and Carivibe which is held during the second weekend in June and showcases the best in Caribbean food and music.

June is also the month when the Blacburn Community Association holds it’s annual Blackburn Fun Fair complete with a midway, live entertainment and fireworks. The Fun Fair parade, which takes place on the Saturday morning, includes participants from every organizatio, school and youth group in the Hamlet.

Sticking to the month of June, Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney hosts his annual Celebrate Summer event on the third Saturday of the month.

STAR STAFF — One of the best things about living in Orléans are the many fairs, festivals and community Fun Days that are held every year. Chief among them is the Navan Fair.

Held on the second weekend in August, the Navan Fair attracts people from across the region who crowd the fair grounds to watch the demolition derby, take in the livestock shows and enjoy the midway rides.

This year’s fair is being held from Aug. 8-11. Among the highlights are the demolition derby on the Thursday and Friday night, the Navan Fair parade on Saturday morning, and the grandstand show with headliners 54-40 and Meghan Patrick. In September, some of the top grillmasters in North America will return to Orléans for the third annual Ribfest.

Last year’s event attracted several thousand people who thoroughly enjoyed the combination of BBQ ribs, and live music. This year’s event will once again be held on Centrum Blvd. which will be closed for the three-day event from Sept.

13-15.

A thriving arts and culture community STAR STAFF — If you appreciate the arts, either as a patron or a practitioner, Orléans has much to offer for residents of all ages starting with the Ottawa School of Theatre (formerly called the Orléans Young Players Theatre School).

With their home in the Shenkman Arts Centre, OST offers programs in French and English for budding thespians as young as four years old. Most programs are run over three terms (September to December, January to March, and March to June).

Special seasonal productions are also held in December and June.

Budding singers can join the Cross Town Youth Chorus which rehearses every Tuesday from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church on Gaultois Cres. off Orléans Blvd.

The Junior Choir is open to kids age 5-10 and the Senior Choir is open to kids age 11-15. The group holds a Christmas concert every year and ofter performs at special events like the Orléans Legion Remembrance Day ceremony and visits to local seniors homes. For more information visit www.ctyc.ca.

Older singers can audition for Coro Vivo Ottawa, or Les Chansonniers d’Ottawa. Both choruses, which have their roots in the east end, enjoy a wellearned reputation. Orléans is also home to a thriving amateur theatre scene. Vintage Stock Theatre stages a murder mystery dinner production every August on the grounds of the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum and a lamplight period production in September, also on the museum grounds.

Car and auto service with a personal touch STAR STAFF – The term “self made man” has been applied to many entrepreneurs in the past, but it’s never applied more than it does to Extreme Auto Care owner Will Doughty.

Doughty started his first business fresh out of high school in 1999. He had just returned from a two month stint in the arctic and bought a mobile pressure washing unit.

“It was called Will’s Washing Service and my motto was ‘Will’s willing to wash’,” Doughty remembers fondly.

The business was successful enough for Doughty to lease some space on Youville Drive to store the pressure washer. But after a year of working day and night and most weekends he decided to focus on cars and so, Extreme Auto Care was born.

In the early days, Doughty depended on referrals from local car dealers who gave him their detailing overflow. When his satisfied customers started coming back on a regular basis he knew he was on to something.

“I just went at it full blown everyday, work, work, work, and built it from there,” Doughty recalls of those early days.

Business began to boom and Doughty began to take on more employees, includ-

ing his wife Sharon who came on as a full-time employee in 2012.

Over the years he started offering additional services including oil changes, tires changes, and repair jobs.

“We’ve tried to make it so that it’s a one stop shop. So the customer drops their car off in the morning. They want it cleaned, they want the oil changed, they want a brake job and get their winter tires changed. Then they come back at five o’clock and it’s all done. So instead of going to multiple places to get multiple things done, they just come to use and we take care of everything for them,” says Doughty.

Speoial Contribution to the Orléans Star Ottawa School of Theatre (OST) is 30 years old! OST is the longest running theatre school in Ottawa, offering acting and theatre classes for students of all ages in English and French.

The school’s theme for the upcoming 2019-2020 season will be Roots and Wings: Past and Future with productions inspired by what gets us going... the things that INSPIRES! – art, science, nature, stories and poetry, fairy tales and legends.

but this time it’s different – the Grinch has enlisted an army of evil characters to help him to keep Christmas from coming.

And it’s not just Christmas that’s at risk of disappearing, but all of mankind and the world as we know it. Can Cindy Lou and her friends save the season? More importantly, can they save the planet? Join them on their trek to the North Pole to find out.

Theatre study skills such as character development, text analysis, spatial awareness, breath control, to name just a few,

build skills for life.

The basis for these techniques begins with taking ownership of your own actions within the group as a whole. The show is not deemed a success or failure because of what happens onstage, but rather what has happened in class and in rehearsals.

It’s no secret that Orléans is home to dozens of neighbourhood parks, but what is less commonly known is that they are connected by more than 50 kms of pathways that are shared by pedestrians and cyclists alike.

One of the more popular pathways runs along the Ottawa River from Petrie Island to Parliament Hill and further west all the way to Kanata.

During the summer months cyclists can enjoy NOKIA Sunday Bikedays during which the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway is closed to motorists from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow the free flow of bicycles.

The Parkway can be accessed at St. Joseph Blvd. and Bearbrook Road.

The Green’s Creek area in Blackburn Hamlet is a great place to go for a run in the summer or sledding in the winter. The hill at Green’s Creek is one of the tallest tobogganing hills in the National Capital Region. The nearby Hornet’s Nest soccer facility is home to the Ottawa-Gloucester Hornets.

Further east, Millennium Park is home

to the Cumberland United Soccer Club and Ottawa TFC as well as the Cumberland Panthers Football Club.

The Park is also home to the Kiwanis Playground and the largest splash pad in the east end.

Sticking to the great outdoors, Petrie Island located on the Ottawa River has become a recreation jewel with its two supervised beaches, nature trails and ecological reserve. The island, which can be accessed by a causeway at the northern end of Trim Road, is home to the Orléans Canada Day Celebration and the Carivibe festival held every June. It’s also a popular destination for kayakers and canoeists who can paddle around the island and explore its many coves and inlets.

If you don’t own your own kayak or canoe, you can rent one at the Oziles Marina and Tackle Shop which is located on the causeway as you approach the island. Oziles also rents paddle boards, jet skis and paddle boats.

Orléans is also blessed with not one, not two, but three municipal recreation centres.

Knitting group touches many lives in many ways And so it began... and grew, until now it provides handmade articles to abused seniors, residents of the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, Make-A-Wish and many others. “Wherever there is a need,” says McCaughey, now 84. She hosts as many as 32 members of Busy Fingers in her home twice a month when they gather for coffee, to drop off finished items and collect material for new projects.

“We are like a family now. Everybody cares about everybody else,” she says.

What began with afghans has expanded to a wide range of items, including wheelchair shawls, mitts, scarves, toques and dolls – basically anything they are requested to make. An Ottawa man in his 80s has not only made six scarves, he has made about 100 reusable bags for

The group of knitters and crocheters, founded in 2010 by Orléans senior Eileen McCaughey, has donated more than 5,000 knit and crochet items to area charitable organizations.

The group has about 100 active members from as far away as northwestern Quebec, Montreal and Brockville. Its genesis was a question from McCaughey’s son, Ottawa police officer Richard Dugal.

It was December 2010 and his step-father had just died. His mother was working on an afghan “just to keep busy” and Dugal asked if she would donate it to the police service’s Elder Abuse Section.

He needed something he could “do on his own, by himself.”

She knew about Busy Fingers through her friendship with the family. With the school’s approval, Luc taught himself to crochet via the internet, completed an afghan and was able to graduate. He is now studying computer programming at La Cité Collégiale.

Donations of wool are always needed, McCaughey says, including small leftover amounts. “One of my ladies only takes small balls of wool, the size of an egg,” she says. “She makes the most beautiful afghans from that, it’s unbelievable.”

Members get great satisfaction from helping others and feeling needed.

“It keeps them busy and gives them a purpose,” says McCaughey.

Busy Fingers also provided a local teenager with the volunteer hours he needed to graduate from BéatriceDesloges last spring. Luc Lavergne lives with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which he developed after having strep throat when he was eight. The

Residents are thoroughly entertained by the playful pair, even if some can no longer recall what kind of animal they are.

This story speaks to the lengths the staff at this Symphony Senior Living residence will go to bring unique experiences to its residents, and is just one of the factors that gives such a positive impression.

The chapel, added in 1955 to the original seminary built in 1930 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, is the heart of the residence, with its striking stained glass windows and comfortable couches.

Now a multi-purpose space, it is used for everything from religious services and physio sessions, to special events, musical presentations and . . . goat visits.

Forest Valley Terrace prides itself on its leadership and expertise in the field of memory care. Its stated goal is to “connect with our residents and support the family through a disease process that takes so much, but makes us stop and truly appreciate each moment.”

A Seniors Moment

by Heather Jamieson The cornerstone of its approach is recognizing the value of maintaining lifelong daily routines and the belief that by participating in various tasks residents may have done throughout their lives, they feel productive and worthwhile. In turn, they are happier and have greater self-esteem.

Many of us have heard of the strength of music memory and the emotional and behavioural benefits of listening to music or singing for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. The reason is that key areas of the brain linked to musical memory are left relatively undamaged by the disease. Music has been proven to relieve stress, as well as reduce anxiety, depression and agitation.

Jessy Staniszewski, the residence’s executive director, says music is a powerful tool for staff when dealing with an uncooperative or agitated resident. The

simple act of singing to them can distract an uncooperative resident sufficiently that they will calm down and cooperate.

He speaks fondly of one resident, a retired piano teacher in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s who sits at the residence’s piano and plays flawlessly. “Her music memory has remained beautifully intact.”

Forest Valley Terrace has incorporated a multitude of tools to provide memory support and to engage and calm residents who are struggling at different levels of dementia. They have created a home-like atmosphere and have a state-of-the-art, customized wireless monitoring system which not only provides residents with the ability to call for assistance, it also tracks the exact location of both residents and staff.

Memory care at Forest Valley Terrace is committed to “assisting people live their best lives.” The program is based on “living in the moment, because with Alzheimer’s, life is moment to moment. It may be a good moment or a bad moment, but you are ‘living’ in it.” Staniszewski says. “We are focused on engaging that resident and making each moment the best it can be.”

Every corner of the floor has something that can help those struggling with

memory loss to relive happy memories by stimulating their minds and memories.

It might be the office desk and typewriter which allows a former businessman “to go to work” or a bassinet of life-like baby dolls to be snuggled to rekindle a mother’s love.

Staniszewski also emphasises the extent to which the families of residents are the focus of their care.

“I can’t stress how important it is.

Sometimes it is the family we are helping the most because they are at a breaking point,” says Staniszewski.

Family members often need help dealing with guilt and fear and are supported as they learn to adjust to a new relationship with their loved one, who perhaps doesn’t recognize them anymore, he adds.

Anyone of us may need the kind of specialized care that is offered by residences such as Forest Valley Terrace; if not for ourselves, perhaps for a family member or friend. Alzheimer Society statistics predict that the number of people living with dementia is expected to double in the next 20 years.

I am sure Forest Valley Terrace is not unique amongst area facilities in its strengths. But it certainly is a leader.

Ottawa TFC teams advance to Ontario Cup quarters

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Two teams with the Ottawa TFC Soccer Academy have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ontario Cup. Both of the Academy’s boys and girls U17 squads will see action in the provincial tournament which resumes in various locations this weekend.

The U17 girls team squeaked into the quarterfinals based on their goal differential during the group stage of the tournament.

After winning their first two games over Aurora FC (7-0) and the Burlington Bayhawks (5-0), the Ottawa team, which includes a number of players from the Orléans area, had to beat or tie West Ottawa, which also had wins over Aurora (4-0) and Burlington (6-0).

As fate would have it their July 13 showdown ended in a hard fought 0-0 draw which meant Ottawa TFC advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to a two goal advantage over West Ottawa.

Their opponents in the quarterfinals will be Kitchener FC. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Kitchener.

Like their female clubmates, the U17 boys team also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ontario Cupo based on goal differential.

After tying the Ajax FC Red team 0-0 in their opening game of the tournament on July 12, Ottawa TFC beat the Oshawa Kicks Red team 3-0 the next day.

In their group finale on July 13, they beat the Oakville Wild 5-0 to give themselves a +8 goal differential. Ajax also earned wins over Oshawa ansd Oakville but they only scored three goals in the process.

The boys team will face the Vaughan Azzuri in the quarterfinals in Vaughan on Sunday.

The Ottawa Gloucester Hornets will also have a team competing in the quarterfinals. The club’s U14 girls side earned three clean sheets in going undefeated in the group stage.

After opening the tournament with a 1-0 win over Oakville SC, the Ottawa Gloucester Sting beat Darlington 8-0 and then downed Glen Shields 2-0 to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals whre they will face Windsor TFC in Windsor on Saturday.

“It’s going to be a challenge especially in my first year, but I’m really looking forward to it,” says Jean, who faces an additional challenge as a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church which calls for members to refrain from the pursuit of secular activities, including sports, on the Sabbath which is observed on Saturdays.

Members are left to decide on their own whether to compete on the Sabbath or not. The only time it’s really caused a conflict in Jean’s short career is the recent Athletics Ontario championship during which the 400-hurdle final was scheduled on a Saturday.

Jean decided to forego the meet, having already won the provincial high school championship.

The final at the Canadian championships was held on Sunday. The only time he’s had to compete on the Sabbath was at the Pan Am Championhips. In the futur, he will decided on a meet-by-meet basis.

The number of Seventh Day Adventist athletes are few and far between, but there area a handful of hurch members who managed to balance their faith with heir pursuit of athletics including Kenyan marathon runner Priscah Jeptoo who won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics and David Alaba who is a midfielder for Bayern Munich.

Former Paralympian Lijiljana Ljubisic won a gold medal in discus and a silver medal in shot put competing for Canada at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona.

Perhaps the most famous Seventh Day Adventist athlete was professional boxer Archie Moore who held the world light heavyweight title for 10 years from 1952 to 1962.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church is a Protestant denomination which is distinguished by its adherence to the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week and its emphasis on the imminent Second Coming (Advent) of Jesus Christ.

It is often confused with the Church of Latter Day Saints which is Mormon.

While Jean was well off his personal best time in Montréal, he still managed to run a sub-55, crossing the finish line in 54.42 seconds.

Running in lane five, Jean was already way ahead of his fellow competitors heading into the final bend. As he came off the turn and headed into the final stretch, no one was near him. He ended up stretching a 10-metre lead into a 15-metre win over the final two hurdles.

Jean went into the event after placing 11th at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Costa Rica earlier in the month. Keep in mind that the Gisèle-Lalonde grad is only 18 years old and still has a year of junior eligibility left.

Jean has seen a marked improvement in his times ever since he joined the Ottawa Lions track club last year. As a result of his success, he was approached by several universities seeking his services. He settled on the University of Windsor and is looking forward to competing at the next level.

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Orléans hurdler Leewinchell Jean wrapped his outdoor track season with his biggest prize of all last week, capturing the gold medal in the U20 400-metre event at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Montreal.

The Ontario high school champion blew the field away in the final, crossing the finish line early 15 metres ahead of the defending champion in the event, Scott Dixon.

Leewinchell Not only was it Jean Jean’s first medal at a national event, it was his first national event period. He was the number one ranked junior hurdler heading into the meet based on his time at the OFSAA provincial championships in June which he won in 52.95 seconds.
