Conservatives, NDP name candidates for Orléans byelection

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The date for the provincial by-election may not be set yet, but the Conservatives and the New Democrats have both named their candidates to try and wrestle the riding away from the Liberals who will be represented on the ballot by current Cumberland Ward city councillor Stephen Blais.

The Conservative candidate has a last name that may ring a bell with some voters.

Natalie Montgomery is the wife of former Conservative candidate Cameron Montgomery who was unable to unseat former Orléans MPP Marie-France Lalonde in the last provincial election in 2018.

Lalonde has since moved on to federal politics, which precipitated the need for a by-election that must be held by March 19.

Current conventional wisdom is that Premier Doug Ford will set a date for a by-election by the end of the month which means it could be held in the third or fourth week of February.

Montgomery holds a Masters of Arts Degree in Health Communication with Honours and she is a PhD candidate in population health.

Montgomery completed her under-graduate degree in Sociology and Political Science at the University of Toronto, and she has worked in communications at all three levels of government and crown agencies including the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the former Ontario Power Authority.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS 79-year-old driver charged in July death of young cyclist ORLÉANS –The driver of a car that struck and killed a young cyclist on the southbound Jeanne d’Arc Blvd. on-ramp to Hwy. 174 last July has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and careless driving causing death. Robert Ryan, 79, is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 21. It is unclear why it took six months for the Ottawa Police Service to lay the charges, which are normally routine in such incidents. In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen shortly after the accident happened last July, Ryan told the paper that the victim, Simon Peter Khouri, 13, tried to cross the on-ramp in front of him with two other friends. He narrowly missed the two friends but struck Khouri with enough force to cause multiple system failures to his body and sent him into cardiac arrest. First responders who arrived on the scene were unable to revive the teenager and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Ryan maintains there was nothing he could have done to avoid the collision.

Gloucester Horticultural Society meetings moved to Queenswood Heights CC ORLÉANS – In an effort to increase it’s membership, the Gloucester Horticultural Society has moved it’s monthly meetings from the Top Generation Hall in Ramsayville to the Queenswood Heights Community Centre at 1485 Duford Dr. The Society has been a long-standing member of the Ontario Horticultural Association since its inception in 1925. Part of the Society’s mandate is to organize lectures, workshops, one-day road trips, garden tours and flower shows to name just a few. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. Montgomery has served as a volunteer on the board of directors for Conceivable Dreams, the OHIP for IVF Coalition in Ontario. She is currently working with the Ford government to grow awareness about the meaningful impact of the Ontario Fertility Program and opportunities to make it even better.

Among the issues she wants to champion during the by-election are ensuring the completion of the Orléans Health Hub; attracting and retaining small businesses to the riding; guaranteeing that children continue to grow through quality public education; and improving quality of life through investments on main roads, highways and transit for Orléans residents.

But her main purpose for running is to give Orléans residents a voice on the inside rather than the outside of the current government.

In seeking the provincial seat in Orléans, Montgomery must find a way to accomplish something that hasn’t been achieved by a Conservative in 20 years. The last person to serve for the Conservatives in Orléans was former Cumberland mayor Brian Coburn. But even he couldn’t hold on to the seat. He was defeated by Phil McNeely in 2003.

Before Coburn, Bob MacQuarrie held the seat for the Conservatives for one term from 1981-1985.

And while her husband won’t be able to join her on the hustings due to his work commitments, Montgomery will be able to benefit from the data that was gathered during his campaign in 2018 as well as David Bertschi’s federal campaign in the fall.

During the by-election, Montgomery will be up against Cumberland Ward city councillor Stephen Blais who is running for the Liberals and Manon Parrot, who is running for the NDP. Parrot is the daughter of Jean-Claude Parrot, who served as president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) between 1977 and 1992.

A 35-year resident of Orléans, Parrot has worked as a translator for CUPW for the past 37 years.

She is running to give Orléans voters an opportunity to elect a “grassroots” MPP who will spend a good deal of her time consulting with residents about the issues that are important to them.

Manon Parrot that the NDP is the Official Opposition in the Ontario legislature and, if elected, she would be a strong and effective advocate for her constituents.

But while its been 17 years since a Conservative represented the riding, it’s been 45 years since Evelyn Gigantes won the seat for the NDP in back-to-back elections in 1975 and 1977.

Parrot believes her hopes to win the byelection rests on her ability to demonstrate to voters that she is not a career politician and that she is running to help improve the lives of ordinary people.

She is also hoping to build on the support the NDP received in the 2018 provincial election when relative unknown Barbara Zambroni increased the share of the NDP vote by 18 per cent.

More than 14,000 people voted for Zambroni. That’s more than the NDP candidates received in the previous three elections combined.

The final results in 2018 were 24,972 for Marie-France Lalonde, 22,509 for Cameron Montgomery and 14,003 for Zambroni.

City makes case for roundabout at Portobello and Valin

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star City engineers laid out their case to build a roundabout at Portobello Blvd. and Valin Street during an open house at the South Fallingbrook Community Centre on Jan. 16, and they were immediately met with resistance on the part of local residents who believe it will create an unsafe environment for pedestrians – especially children.

The intersection currently has a fourway stop sign, but increased traffic volume over the past several years has led to the need for either traffic lights or a roundabout.

Traffic lights maybe safer for children and other pedestrians, but it would create long delays for traffic approaching Portobello Blvd. along Neptune Drive and Valin Street.

A roundabout would make it easier to maintain traffic flow, however, parents are worried that it would create a dangerous situation for pedestrians and especially children.

Staff at the open house tried to allay their fears by explaining that the roundabout

would be one lane only.

Traffic approaching the roundabout along Portobello from the north and south would be forced to merge into one lane and then proceed through the roundabout at a reverse speed.

Signage would be erected to alert drivers to the fact that pedestrians have the right-of-way.

Pedestrians would then be able to cross the roundabout one lane at a time and they would only have to worry about traffic coming from one direction.

At the current four-way stop, pedestrians must cross four lanes of traffic while worrying about cars coming from north and the south and turning right and left.

The city currently pays for crossing guards at the intersection in the morning and afternoon. Those crossing guards would remain in place if a roundabout is built.

Another measure that could be put in place are flashing lights at both the north and south approaches to the roundabout along Portobello as is currently the case at the roundabout at Trim and Dairy Drive

behind them and allow passengers to use the crosswalks in complete safety.

The roundabout, without the flashing lights, will cost an estimated $2.8 million, which would be paid for through development charges. The flashing lights would cost an additional $70,000 to $80,000.

The City’s planning department will take the comments provided by members of the public and present them to the Transportation Committee at a later date.

Dollars and sense The ongoing labour dispute between the Ford government and Ontario’s teachers is now in its second month with no end in sight.

At the heart of the dispute, as it is in any labour dispute, is money.

Sure the teachers want you to believe that it’s about maintaining quality education in Ontario, but that’s secondary to the money, and I don’t mean salaries. The salary issue is but a pittance in comparison to the real issue at stake – class sizes.

The Ford government wants to increase class sizes so it can cut down on the number of teachers on the provincial payroll.

Under the previous Liberal government, class sizes were capped at an average of 22 students. The Ford government initially wanted to increase the cap to 28 students, or about 30 per cent more. But a 30 per cent increase in class sizes would lead to a 30 per cent decrease in the number of teachers needed to man those classes.

Understandably, the teachers unions were upset. The Ford government has since reduced the cap to 25 students per classroom, but that’s still a 15 per cent increase which equates to a 15 per cent decrease in the number of teachers.

The Ford government desperately wants to increase class sizes so they can reduce the number of teachers and save money that would help limit the size of the provincial deficit.

The problem is that by increasing class sizes without increasing the resources needed to help teachers effectively manage the extra students will have an adverse impact on the classroom and students will suffer.

When it comes to wages, the two sides are not that far apart. The teachers want a two per cent increase but the province only wants to give them one per cent. The difference is $860 for the average teacher earning $86,000 a year. That works out to $16.54 per week before taxes and other deductions are applied.

Let’s say the teachers are in the 20 per cent tax bracket. If so, they would be left with an extra $13.25 per week. It would barely register a blip on their existing paycheques, but multiply $860 times every teacher in the province and you get an idea of what the province stands to save if they stick to one per cent.

So what’s the solution? First, of all I’m not sure the issue of class sizes can ever be solved at the negotiating table. It’s a policy issue.

Like it or not, the Conservatives campaigned on increasing class sizes. And, like it or not, elections have consequences. A majority of Ontarians voted for Doug Ford and the Conservative Party in the last election – some because they supported the Conservative Party’s policies and some because they wanted to teach the Liberals a lesson.

If Ontario parents want smaller class sizes they have to vote accordingly in the next election. The same goes for parents in Orléans in the upcoming by-election. They should not have to depend on teachers doing it at the bargaining table for them.

Ongoing transit problems raise serious questions This scribe has been taken aback by LRT’s first four months of less-than-stellar performance. But to those who are calling for LRT to be shutdown, sorry, this is moronic. We can’t put hundreds of buses – which we don’t have or are not roadworthy – back on the roads and reconfigure street, highway and bus only lanes back to their prior use.

Yes, all modern transit systems have daily interruptions. However, Ottawa’s LRT has turned into a comedy of errors, except the riders who depend on it to get to and from work or school aren’t laughing. Worse still, OC Transpo continue to blame the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) consortium for this mess. But the city accepted the proverbial keys to the project from RTG late last summer and then, allegedly, did their own testing before launching the system mid-September.

So what testing and simulations were done?

Did OC Transpo run LRT with trial passengers on board, with folks jamming doors, with trains stuck at stations or with disabled trains between stations? Did the city model resulting passenger overcrowding at the Blair and Tunney’s Pasture Stations where folks must transfer to buses to get home?

We don’t have the answers to these questions because our elected councillors, as best I can tell, haven’t asked for full disclosure of these the trials and simulations. Neither have we seen any enterprising journalists – yet – file or reveal

Freedom of Information requests to unearth this information.

Compounding this situation is the loss, rejigging, or limited hours of suburban bus routes. This has impacted seniors and those who do not have cars who relied on these former routes to get to local walk-in clinics, activities at the legion and some programming at local community and recreation centres.

Again, we don’t have enough buses or drivers to restart these routes. City officials could look to the Town of Innisfil south of Barrie that partnered with Uber to offer 7/24 access with fixed rate journeys to various destinations in their community and discounted/subsidized specials for other point-topoint fares. Or we could look at Belleville that abandoned pre-determined nighttime routing and worked with a digital platform and fleet of smaller vans/buses to respond to on-demand routing where you and five other passengers may share a small bus with multiple pick-up and drop-off locations that you request.

The Mayor, City Council, OC Transpo and its union leaders must embrace new transit innovations. And they have about 18 to 24 months to get this moving, pun intended. If not, the ballot question in the 2022 municipal election will be transit, Transit and TRANSIT with the Mayor and all councillors facing the fight of their political lives.

STAR STAFF – Spring may still be a long way off, but multi-residential developments are beginning to pop up in Orléans like crocuses.

The first was the Groupe Lepine project near Innes and Pagé Road that would see the construction of three 12- to 16-storey high-rise apartment buildings and eight 9-storey mid-rise buildings containing 1,320 dwellings in total.

The second development proposed by the Torgan Group would see the construction of a 16-storey apartment building at St. Joseph Blvd. and Duford Drive.

Now comes word about a proposed development at Portobello Blvd. and Provence Avenue that would see the construction of 48 single detached dwellings, 61 townhouse dwellings and 312 rental units contained in four 6-storey apartment buildings.

The applicant has applied for an amendment to the city planning act to allow for the 6-storey buildings. The act currently limits buildings to just four storeys.

Councillor Stephen Blais has already expressed concerns the development will have on a local park and traffic patterns.

A public information meeting on the project is planned for Feb. 11 at the Fallinhbrook Community Elementary School on Princess Louis Drive in Fallingbrook from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

When it comes to winter, just let me know when it’s over The older I get, the more I hate winter.

I especially dislike the month of January.

It’s long, dreary and depressing. In fact, it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It doesn’t even have a holiday.

New Year’s Day doesn’t count. It is far too close to Christmas and way, way too far from Feb. 1. Not that February is much better. But at least in February you have Valentine’s Day and Family Day to break things up. Plus it’s only 28 days long – 29 this year – and there’s a light at the end of the wintery tunnel.

I didn’t always feel the way I do now.

Growing up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, we used to shovel off a patch of Maynard Lake in front of the Lakefront Apartments where we lived and play shinny for hours on end. And on the weekends, Dad used to teach us how to ski on a hill at the Brightwood Golf Club.

Things changed after we moved to Ottawa in 1973. I can trace my disdain for winter back to my pre-teens when my dad enrolled me in the Parkdale Hockey Association. We had just moved from Nova Scotia and I had my heart set on playing with the Pinecrest Hockey Association, but unfortunately we missed the cutoff for registration, which is how I ended up playing in the Parkdale league.

Up Front Fred Sherwin Did I happen to mention that the Parkdale Hockey Association played all of their games on an outdoor rink on Meadowlands Drive?

The first season wasn’t too bad. I could put up with the frigid temperatures and the burning feet after you took your skates off in the car because we were winning. In fact, we won the league championship in my first year.

Unfortunately, I suffered the cruelest of fates in my sophomore season. In an effort to make the league more competitive, they took the best players off the championship team and reassigned us to some of the weaker teams. I ended up on the worst team from the year before with predictable results.

I remember we lost our first game 11-0.

We didn’t fare much better in our second game which we lost 12-0. We eventually

scored a goal in our third game, but the opposing team scored 10 times. And that was it. I retired from the sport at the tender age of 12. I don’t recall my dad putting up much of an argument. I think he was as tired of standing in the cold watching me play as I was playing in the cold facing 80 shots a game.

But the worst was the burning sensation I felt in my feet when I took my skates off. It felt like they were literally on fire for about 10 minutes and no amount of hot chocolate could alleviate the pain.

The other haunting memory of winters in my youth involved downhill skiing.

After we moved to Ottawa, my dad bought a family season pass to Edelweiss. Both of my sisters loved it and are avid skiers to this day. Me, not so much.

I can still remember Dad packing us into the car and heading up to Edelweiss with a -35 wind chill factor.

At one point, I refused to get on the chairlift. I can still remember Dad telling us that he had paid good money for those passes and we were going to ski down that hill whether we liked it or not.

Looking back, I don’t think I was ever a winter person. Except for the odd day tobogganing, I’ve always felt that winter was a colossal waste of time. Bears and any

other hibernating mammals have it right – they can just sleep it off. We humans aren’t so lucky.

I did make an effort to change my attitude toward winter after the kids were born. We used to take them to Winterlude every year, sort of, and I even enrolled the boys in a snowboarding school which nearly ended with tragic results, but that’s a different story for a different column.

My relationship with winter can be summed up in my relationship with Winterlude. After the ex and I bought a place on Sunnyside Avenue near the Canal, we were determined to make the most of our proximity to the Canal and Lansdowne Park.

The first year, we walked over to the Canal at Bank Street, put on our skates and then skated down Dow’s Lake and back to see the ice sculptures. The second year we skated down to Dow’s Lake, but took the shuttle back. The third year we didn’t even bring our skates. We took the shuttle to see the ice sculptures and then took it back.

I can’t remember the last time I went to Winterlude.

Today, my outdoor winter activities are limited to shoveling the driveway and brushing the snow off my car and the less I have to do of either the better.

Local dancer to make Royal Winnipeg Ballet debut at the NAC

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star It’s been a meteoric rise for Orléans dancer Logan Shaw, 13. A year ago, he attended an audition in Montréal for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s summer intensive program. Little did he know when he was accepted, it would set him on a path that would lead to his professional debut in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of The Wizard of Oz at the NAC this week,.

After his four-week stint in the summer program in Winnipeg, Logan was offered the IG Wealth Management scholarship to become a full-time student in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s professional division where he would split his time between academics and dance.

Allowing their son to leave home at just 13 years of age was a difficult decision for his parents, but knowing the reputation of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the importance the company puts on both academics and dance they agreed to allow Logan to pursue his dream.

“I originally went to the class to have fun. I didn’t expect to make it into the full-time program and when I did I was really excited because I had lots of fun in the summer and it was a really nice

environment,” says Logan.

But joining the full-time program is only part of the story. During the fall, Logan must have made quite an impression because he was invited to join the touring production of The Wizard of Oz as the Wizard’s apprentice.

The idea of a dancer rising through the ranks from summer program to a role in a touring production in less than six months is so rare that communications and public relations coordinator Dustin Rodgers could not recall a similar occurrence.

Logan is understandably thrilled at the opportunity to dance in front of his family and friends at the NAC, including his friends from the Dance R Studio in Orléans where he studied under the studio’s owner Logan Shaw will be dancing in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of Miki Whyte and Summerside Public The Wizard of Oz this week at the NAC. St. Peter production an ode to 70s era disaster films

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star What do you get when you combine the largest floating casino in New York with the threat of an earthquake and a soundtrack chock-a-block with kitzchy songs from the 70s? Well, you get St. Peter High School’s latest musical production Disaster! The Musical, that’s what.

Set on a floating casino that’s moored to a pier set into a fault zone, Disaster! is another in a long line of very entertaining productions starring the seeming endless talents of the students enrolled in the musical threatre program at St. Peter accompanied by members of the Grade 11/12 concert band.

The play was co-written by American playwrites Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick as an ode to 70s-era disaster movies like The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake and The Towering Infero. Of those three, Disaster! is more in the vein of The Poseidon Adventure.

The play was very nearly a real disaster when the actor playing Dr. Ted Scheider suffered a separated shoulder near the end of the first half of the play during the Jan. 10 performance, which forced the director to cancel the rest of the play.

The actor in question managed to return to the production, albeit in a wheelchair, for both shows on Saturday and carried off his scenes like a real trooper.

I will try to give an abridged version of the plot as best I can, although I can’t name any of the actors owing to the fact that St. Peter productions never have an actual program to help you figure out who the characters are or who’s playing who.

It makes it challenging to write a review, but it is what it is.

In the world of fitness training, there are those who lead by teaching and those who lead by example. Vanda Hadarean does both. The owner and namesake of the Inspired By Vanda fitness centre has a resume that few others can boast. Meatheads is a meatlovers paradise If you love meat, especially the grilled variety served in a brioche bun with your choice of fresh condiments, then you need to visit Meatheads Grill located inside the Quickie store at Trim & Watters in Fallingbrook.

Open a little over a month, Meatheads has already gained a cult following among local burger aficionados, thanks primarily to their use of locally sourced beef and super fresh ingredients as well as their prices. A 6-ounce burger with no sides costs just $10 and a half-pound burger is just $13.

Add fries and a drink and you pay an extra $2 – poutine and a drink $4.

Meatheads is the creation of friends Jessy Brethour and Neil Post, while Nathan Chaput is the master in the kitchen who turns their ideas into delicious burgers and sandwiches that has Facebook buzzing.

Their goal was to open a restaurant where the food speaks for itself. They were also committed to supporting other local businesses. For instance, the chuck that goes into every burger is purchased at Lavergne Western Beef on Navan Road.

Their signature burgers are the Meathead Classic and the Meathead Deluxe, but they also make a Bacon & Cheese Burger; a Stray Dog Bacon Cheese Burger with double bacon and a chutney-style BBQ sauce made with Stray Dog’s Anytime IPA; a Pulled Pork Burger; and a Mushroom Onion Swiss Melt with Bacon that is quickly becoming one of the most popular items on the menu. Despite being open for so short a time, Meatheads has already been nominated for Best Burger in Ottawa in the Faces magazine 2020 Ottawa Awards.

As proof they’re not a one-trick pony, Meatheads has plenty of other options to choose from besides burgers including an Orléans Cheese-steak Sandwich, a Kickin’ Chicken sandwich, a Pulled Pork sandwich, a Big ol’ BLT, and a Grilled Cheese and Bacon sandwich. They also sell wings by the pound either sauced or dusted, hot dogs, pogos, Polish Sausage and chili.

Deep community roots strengthen litigation law firm

As small town institutions go, none are as important to local residents or more tightly woven into the fabric of the community than J.T. Bradley’s Country Convenience Store in Navan. In fact, it is impossible to imagine what the east end community would be like without J.T. Bradley’s.

When St. Martha’s Brasserie d’Orléans first opened its doors in October 2012, it was a breath of fresh air in a community that was devoid of any true fine dining establishments. Since then, a number of excellent eateries have joined its ranks, making Orléans a true destination for lovers of fine food.

Over the past seven plus years, St. Martha’s has remained at the top of its game, thanks largely to its willingness to explore new flavour profiles and embrace change, all the while staying true to its desire to offer its customers “rustic refinement”.

The restaurant’s latest menu, created by Chef Mike Gaumond, relies on a lot of Norse and aboriginal flavours and uses a lot of smoke, winter seasonal greens and root vegetables, nuts, and sheep’s milk cheese.

Everything on the menu is made with ingredients sourced within a 600 km radius of Orléans. In order to ensure the quality of his proteins, Chef Gaumond purchases his pork and chicken from Hidden Trails Farm near the LaRose Forest The difference is in the flavours.

Chef Mike Gaumond Take the Tartines aux champignon et oeuf de caille, for instance. The appetizer consists of wilted roquette, or arugula, and wild mushrooms tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette on toast and topped with a quail egg and sheep’s milk cheese. Or the spinach ravioli which is served in a nutmeg and cognac cream sauce topped with toasted walnuts and crispy prosciutto.

Among the new entrées is the Choucroute garnie which consists of wild boar sausage and ham served with house made braised red cabbage and baby red potatoes poached in milk and butter.

The Côtelette du porc is a 10-ounce, bone-in smoked pork chop grilled with a bourbon and maple reduction and served with seasonal potatoes and root vegetables. Another early favourite is the Cassoulet which is a rich, slow cooked ragout casserole made with white beans, pork belly and duck confit and topped with two lamb chops.

Chef Gaumond has also put a new twist on St. Martha’s popular Confit de canard by serving it on a charred onion risotto with a blueberry and spruce reduction served with seasonal potatoes and root vegetables, and he’s replaced the Beau’s Burger on the menu with a new burger made from hand-chopped Angus beef served on a brioche bun with a house made onion chutney, lettuce, tomato, bacon and cheese.

These are hearty, rich dishes that are perfect on a cold winter’s night with a full-bodied red wine.

There are many other new items on the menu but you have to reserve your table to try them for yourself. They also continue to have one of the best breakfast and brunch menus in the city featuring the Brasserie Benedict consisting of two poached eggs and your choice of Lavernge ham or bacon on an English muffin topped with a silky tarragon hollandaise sauce and served with a salad or thick cut seasoned home fries and fruit.

Bite Burger – Orléans’ original burger house When it comes to burgers in Orléans, there is only one Bite Burger House.

Opened just over a year ago, Bite Burger continues to serve some of the most original gourmet burgers in the city. As their motto attests – they really do take burgers to a whole new level. Each burger starts with eight ounces of 100 per cent gluten-free ground chuck and are served on a fresh brioche bun, which can also be ordered gluten free for an additional dollar.

Symphony launches ‘Sorority’ floor at Forest Valley Terrace Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star At Symphony Senior Living’s Forest Valley Terrace memory care residence in Orléans, residents can now join their own sorority.

Symphony Sorority is a women-only floor that focuses on helping women living with memory loss live a full and active life. By providing the companionship of a sorority, the concept allows for a more interactive environment for the “sorority sisters” who live on the floor and their loved ones when they visit.

All aspects of daily living are tailored to the specific needs of the women living on the floor, from the menu which changes over every four weeks to regular outings, and visits with Louis, the Chief Canine Officer at Forest Valley Terrace, and spa treatments that are provided on the same floor.

“We really put some thought in terms of the needs of our demographic because we currently have a lot more women in our community than men,” says Forest Valley Terrace’s Community Resources Co-ordinator Glenese Francis-Wright.

“The women will be able to maintain their independence on this floor. They will still be able to cook and bake in the kitchen. They will still be able to knit if they want to and do their own laundry and everything will be supervised by one of our staff members who will have their own room on the floor.”

The job of the Forest Valley Sorority Sister is to get to know each resident on

a personal level and learn their needs and abilities. It will be their job to figure out what the Sorority residents want to do and organize activities and outings with a sensitivity to the resident’s level of memory loss and their need for quiet time.

Executive director Jessy Staniszewski has previous experience with an allwomen unit and has seen first-hand the harmonious and positive atmosphere that emerged and the strong bond that developed among its residents. That community was so successful that it had a waiting list within six months of opening.

The Symphony Soroity floor, with its single rooms and open-concept kitchen, dining and living space, has the feel of a university residence with a few special touches. The colour scheme is a relaxing lavender and light blue and the scent of lavender is used as a form of aromatherapy.

Patterned china and silver flatware is used in each place setting on the floor’s three dining tables and there are interactive stations such as a baby station with lifelike dolls that residents can interact with in addition to a dressing station where residents can do their hair and try on costume jewelry.

The stations are designed to allow family members an opportunity to interact with their loved ones when they visit.

Orléans centre of retirement community construction boom

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star It wasn’t that long ago that Orléans suffered from a severe shortage in lodging for seniors.

This was before Portobello Manor was built, or Alavida La Promenade, or the Chapel Hill Retirement Residence or even the Royal Garden.

At the beginning of this century the only retirement residences in Orléans were the Queenswood Villa; the Résidence St. Louis; the Orléans Villa, which is now Symphony Senior Living Orléans, and Belcourt Manor.

The construction boom began with Portobello Manor (130 units) in 2008. It was followed by Alavida La Promenade (117 units) and the Royal Garden (100 units) which opened within months of each other in 2011.

After a brief respite in construction, All Seniors Care opened the Chapel Hill Retirement Residence (157 units) in 2015 and the Beacon Heights Residence (153 units) in 2017, while the Soins Bruyére opened Besserer Place next to the Résidence St. Louis in 2017.

And it hasn’t stopped there. Alavida, which is owned by Ashcroft, is opening a second building at Tenth Line and Jeanne

d’Arc Blvd. in February (152 units) and Riverstone Retirement Communities, which is owned by Claridge Homes, is building a 146-unit building at Trim and Innes which will be open this summer.

That’s over 1,000 units in the last 12 years and it still might not be enough to keep up with the present and future demand.

It does give seniors who want to stay in Orléans more options than they’ve ever before in terms of where they can spend their retirement.

The one area that remains lacking is memory care. Besides the Madonna Nursing Home and Forest Valley Terrace which specializes in memory care there are only a handful of units set aside in existing retirement residences for people in need of extended care. That might change as demand for memory care increases over the next several years.

One thing for sure, the situation in Orléans is head and shoulders better that it was 15 and even 10 years ago. Where before a person’s elderly parents would have to go outside of their community in order to find a seniors residence in which to live, today they should be able to find a retirement community within fairly short order.

STAR STAFF – During the next two months, the Shenkman Arts Centre will host a variety of entertainers from illustionist Chris Funk to the very funky New Orleans Jazz Festival, the silky smooth vocal stylings of Sarah Slean and Hawksley Workman and the acerbic comedy of This Hour Has 22 Minutes contributor Trent McClennan.

It all kicks off on Feb. 1 with the annual Fête Frissons festival featuring complimentary performances and arts workshops, face-painting, arts and crafts, storytelling, dancing and outdoor fun in the snow... all for free. You might want to bring a few ducats with you, however, to enjoy $6 tacos and mac and cheese prepared by Meatings BBQ. On Feb. 22, Canadian “wonderist” Chris Funk will bring his latest show “Redefining Wonder” to the Shenkman Arts Centre.

Some people may remember Funk from his appearance on Season 11 of “America’s Got Talent”. He also made an appearance on Penn and Teller’s “Fool Us” in which made individual cards rise out of deck of cards while playing the violin.

On Feb 25, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra will perform on the Harold Shenkman Hall stage under the direction of Adonis Rose. The program will include a selection of music by New Orleans songwriter, composer and producer Allen Toussaint.

Tickets are $58 for adults and $20 for students. If you love the musical gumbo that is the sound of New Orleans, you will love the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Sarah Slean and Hawksley Workman On March 13, two of the most remarkable voices in Canadian music will share the same stage for the first time.

Sarah Slean and Hawksley Workman will perform songs from their respective musical repertoires that include a combined output of over 27 albums, accompanying each other and singing as a duo.

During her musical career, Slean has been nominated for three Junos and two Geminis while releasing albums in over 10 albums worldwide. Workman is a two-time Juno Award-winning singer/ songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a catalogue of 16 releases.

Tickets for this unique evening of music are $45 for adults and $20 for students.

On March 25, Trent McLellan will bring his “Hunt for Happy Tour” to the Harold Shenkman Hall for an evening of humour rooted in his native Newfoundland.

McLellan is a regular on “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” and he has performed at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

Tickets for his show are $35 for adults and $25 for seniors and students.

The Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre will present “Top Hats, Tunes and Tales”, a collection of favourite stories and songs, on March 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Richcraft Theatre. Tickets are $10 each or $32 for four.

The month of March will wrap up with a performance of “Beauty and the Beast” by the Chamber Opera Company of Ottawa on March 28. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children.

Serving up scrumptious BBQ in the heart of Orléans

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star If you love southern BBQ, then you will absolutely love Meatings Barbecue on St. Joseph Blvd. in Orléans, When it comes to BBQ, it doesn’t get much better than Meatings where coowner and grillmaster Mat Flosse has perfected his skills on the catering circuit over the past five years.

Back when he first started, Flosse had to choose between buying a new truck or buying his first smoker and chasing his dream. Thankfully for BBQ fans, he chose the smoker and Meatings was born.

For the first two years, he honed his skills catering events from office parties to wedding receptions.

It wasn’t until 2016 that he and his brother Joey joined forces with Carol Hunt to launch the Meatings Barbecue restaurant at 2807 St. Joseph Blvd.

The restaurant specializes in all the staples of southern BBQ including tender, fall-off-the-bone smoked pork ribs; pulled pork; beef brisket; smoked sausage and chicken. They also make smoked chicken wings that have to be tasted to be believed, and served with either BBQ, Hot or Siracha Lime sauce.

Their wood of choice in the smoking process is maplewood and all of their meats are slow-cooked with a dry rub that is a house secret.

The key to any great BBQ is the rub which gives the meat its unique flavour and creates the thin layer of char called “bark”.

All of the BBQ at Meatings is served dry, but you can top it with as much sauce as you wish, or no sauce at all, depending on your personal preference.

If you are a sauce person, then you will have a deep appreciation for Meatings’ signature Maple BBQ sauce.

Their pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef brisket and pulled rib sandwiches are all topped with the Maple BBQ sauce as well as their house-made slaw. The aforementioned can also be ordered as tacos and topped with grilled corn, pickled onions and chimichurri, or pico de gallo, pineapple and the Maple BBQ sauce.

Side dishes include cole slaw, cornbread, Tater Tots, fries, mac and cheese and smoked back beans.

They also make a Caesar Salad topped with smoked chicken and smoked rib tips and a delicious Southwest Salad made with chopped romaine, smoked chicken, grilled corn, black beans, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, taco chips and avocado dressing.

And if you have enough room for dessert you can try their house made Pecan Tarts.

If you bring company, Meatings serves up both a Sharing Platter, which serves two or three people, and a Family Platter which is good for four to five people depending on their appetites.

Meatings also has a number of daily specials. Tuesdays are Taco Day when you can order two tacos for $10. On Wing Wednesdays you can get a pound of wings

Wings and ribs with a side of fries and slaw. Mixing and matching is a true artform at Meatings Barbecue on St. Joseph Blvd. FILE PHOTO for $12. On Tailgate Thursdays, you can a platter of wings, ribs, fries and coleslaw for $20.

On Fridays, you can order the Family Platter for $80 (compared to $83.50 the rest of the week) and on Saturdays, the Sharing Platter is $40, compared to $43.50 the rest of the week.

Last, but no means least, on Slider Sundays you can order four sliders, fries and coleslaw for $26.50.

watering, Meatings also has a weekly special. Past specials have included a Brisket Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich; Spicy Pulled Pork Poutine; and a Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich.

Meatings is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are closed Mondays.

3.5 star Cuban resort has a five-star staff

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Let’s face it: we all have our favourite winter getaway. That special place where everybody knows your name, the sun always shines, the sand is always cool under your feet and the water is a crystal clear aquamarine. For me, that place is Cayo Santa Maria on Cuba’s north shore and the Starfish Cayo Santa Maria in particular.

It may be listed as a 3.5 star resort, but the people who work there are five star all the way – from the groundskeepers to the servers in the buffet, right up to the director general, Salvador Sanchez, who is Mexican by birth and once spent time in Ottawa and Montréal.

Besides the five-star staff, the Starfish has a five-star pool and a five-star beach – make that 5.5 stars. I’m sure there are beaches in the world that are just as nice as those along Cayo Santa Maria, but very few are better. And unlike some other destinations, you will never be bothered by locals trying to sell you trinkets and souvenirs on the beach. You can lay down on your lounge chair for hours and never be bothered by a single soul.

The biggest thing that separates the Starfish from resorts with a four or 4.5 star rating other than price – higher-rated resorts can be as much as $400-$500 more expensive per week – is the food, but there is a very good reason for that. Resorts in Cuba have to cater to the culinary tastes of 60-year-old retirees from Russia, Germany and the Ukraine (heck, even Thunder Bay) at the same time as self-professed foodies from places like Madrid, Montréal and Amsterdam.

Not even the great Wolfgang Puck could create a buffet to please all those palates.

And then you have the issue of supplies.

Resorts in Cuba don’t operate like resorts

in Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic. Resorts in Cuba are at the mercy of their Cuban suppliers who have their own issues to deal with, namely the ongoing U.S. embargo, which means you may get a shipment of bacon this month and then nothing for the next two months.

On this particular visit, they were out of tonic water, tortillas, sausages, bacon and a number of juices.

On a positive note, the resort just opened a new à la carte restaurant called “Aroma” that is absolutely beautiful. The service is amazing and the food is stellar.

I was lucky enough to dine there on Mediterranean night and Mexican night, the latter was a no-brainer given the fact that executive chef is Mexican.

The menus are all table d’hôte and include a soup, choice of appetizer, a choice of three or four different main courses and your choice of dessert.

The new restaurant is a massive improvement over the old one, and even more promising is the fact the they plan to open a second restaurant right beside the new one that will specialize in Asian cuisine.

And did I mention how amazing the staff is? If you look up the Starfish Cayo Santa Maria on TripAdvisor you will read post after post from people gushing over the Starfish staff. I’ve been there five times in the past two-and-a-half years and every time I go they treat me like a member of the family. I’m Facebook friends with a half a dozen of them. I know their children’s names, how old they are and how they’re doing in school.

A number of the staff have been working at the Starfish since it opened in 2007.

Many of them met their spouses while working together, which is pretty handy considering the fact that most work a 16hour shift from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and then

The beach along Cayo Santa Maria on the north shore of Cuba is one of the most spectacular in the Caribbean with sand that has the consistency of icing sugar and crystal clear aquamarine water. When you get tired of lounging on the beach you can always visit Kenny and Yordany at the Starfish pool bar. FRED SHERWIN PHOTOS take a one- or two-hour bus ride back to their homes in Caibairien, Remedios or Santa Clara. If they’re lucky, they might get a five-hour sleep before getting up to go back to work the next day. They do this on a three-day rotation. Only the most understanding spouse, or someone who had to experience it for themselves, would put up with that type of schedule.

More impressively to me is that, despite the long hours, the staff always greet you with a warm smile and they are genuinely interested in your well-being.

My main man at the resort is Alejandro Lema who manages the front desk. He always makes sure I get my favourite room and he is a master at problem-solving and trying to meet the guests’ needs.

Of course, my posse are all still there.

Allin, Yurien and Freddie are the three amigos who serve up cocktails and toasted ham and cheese sandwiches at the beach bar. Denis and Heriberto split their time between serving drinks in the lobby bar and manning the cigar cart. Both are experts on every type of Cuban cigar.

All five of them have been with the Starfish Cayo Santa Maria since day one and they’re all close friends.

The pool bar is manned by Yordany and Kenny and the lobby bar is kept hopping all hours of the day and night by a tightknit group of bartenders and servers that include Duniel, Leonardo, Marco and Enrique.

I should also acknowledge animator extraordinaire Hector Ignacio. The guy is the human version of the Energizer Bunny. I have no idea how he does it, but his energy level is the same at 9 a.m. when he’s leading a stretching exercise on the beach as he is at 9 p.m. when he’s hosting a music trivia contest.

So there you have it. If you’re used to going to 4.5- and five-star resorts don’t bother going to the Starfish Cayo Santa Maria, but if you’re on a budget or are traveling with the kids, I couldn’t give it a higher recommendation. You’ll make friends and create memories that will last a lifetime. Just tell them Hemingway Canadiense sent you.

The high season runs from mid-January until the end of March during which one week at the all-inclusive resort can be had for as little as $885 per person including airfare. By comparison, a 4.5 star resort will cost $1,250 and a week at the five-star Melia Buenavista will run you over $2,300. But if you are looking for a real bargain, I suggest going in June or November when a standard room at the Starfish resort can be had for as little as $765 per person, including airfare if you book it through Sunwing.

Airfare alone during the same period is about $555, so your getting a week at an all-inclusive resort for abut $30 a day.

That’s hard to beat.

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The Cumberland Jr. Grads Major Atom AA team gave themselves a boost in the battle for second place in the Hockey East standings on the weekend by downing the Gloucester Rangers 4-1 on home ice at the Navan Memorial Arena.

The Jr. Grads had a one point edge over the Rangers heading into the game with a game in hand. A loss would have catapaulted the Rangers past the Jr. Grads with only four games left in the regular season.

The game started out in the Rangers favour with Tristan Kitchen scoring with 1:19 left in the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The score could have been more onesided if not for the job done by the Jr. Grads in killing off 44 seconds while two men down and another 51 seconds with only one man in the penalty box.

The Jr. Grads responded in the 4:37 mark of the second period on a goal by Kai Stevens. Two and a half minutes later Kane Astra scored on a pass from Dax

McKinnon to give the Jr. Grads the lead and they didn’t stop there.

McKinnon would score an insurance marker with 3:28 left in the second on a beautifully executed backhand shot that beat the Rangers’ goalie high to the glove side.

The Jr. Grads will kill off two more penalties in the second period to preserve their lead. McKinnon’s empty-net goal with just over a minute left in the game would provide the icing on the cake in a 4-1 win.

A 3-2 win over the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven on Sunday extended the Jr. Grads lead to five points over the Rangers with four games left in the regular season schedule.

In other Hockey East action involving local teams on the weekend the Minor Bantam AA Rangers beat the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven 1-0 to solidify their lead atop the standings. They have a six point lead over the Ottawa Sting with a game in hand and only four more games left to be played.

A win or a tie in any of their four remaining games would give the Rangers the regular season championship. Their next game is against the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Major Bantam AA Jr. Grads have won their last three games, including backto-back wins over the Rideau St. Lawrence Kings and the Upper Ottawa Valley Aces on the weekend3 to keep pace with Nepean Raiders and the Eastern Ontario Cobras in the race for first place in their division.

The Jr. Grads have 39 points, but they still have six games left to play. The Raiders are two points back with three games left to play and the Cobras are four points back with five games left on their schedule.

The Minor Peewee AA Rangers had the weekend off after clinching the regular season championship with a 3-1 win over the Kanata Blazers last Thursday.

The win extended the Rangers’ lead to five points over the second place Eastern Ontario Cobras, but the Cobras only have two games remaining on their schedule.

The Major Peewee AA Rangers bid for a regular season championship suffered a major setback on Sunday when they were shutout 3-0 by the Seaway Valley Rapids.

A win would have kept them one point behind the Nepean Raiders with a game in hand. As it is, they’re now three points back with three games to go in the regular season. Their only hope for a championship banner is if the Raiders lose one of their two remaining games and they win out.

There next games is against the Gloucester Rangers on Thursday, Jan. 24.

In Minor Midget AA action, the Rangers are still four points back of the Nepean Raiders and the Ottawa Sting, but they are running out of games. They have four games left to play, but the Sting have six games left to play and the Raiders have five games left to play.

The Rangers could help their cause if they beat the Raiders on Jan. 31, but they will need help from someone else to keep the Sting in check.

Finally, in the Major Midget AA division the Nepean Raiders are four points away from clinching the title with four games left to play. The only team that can catch them are the Ottawa Sting who have five games left to play.
