By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Ottawa’s highly anticipated and long awaited LRT system is weeks away from becoming operational barring any major hiccups.

The Rideau Transit Group which is responsible for the construction of the LRT line and transit stations, informed the City on Monday that it is ready to move on to the final 12-day trial period which must proceed the official opening of the $2.1 billion project.

RTG’s notice of “substantial completion” means that they are confident the system is effectively complete and is essentially operational.

The City now has up to 10 days to decide whether or not it agrees with RTG’s assessment. If they are in agreement, then a con-

secutive 12-day trial run will be conducted of the entire system to make sure it is ready to handle the onslaught of commuters who have been anxiously anticipating LRT for the past three years.

The City is hoping to have the LRT system operational by the end of August in time for everyone to return from their holidays and go back to work.

News of the RTG’s announcement that the system is substantially complete was met by cheers from local councillors.

Innes Ward Coun. Laura Dudas posted the news of the announcement on her Facebook page.

“Happy to hear from the Rideau Transit Group that the LRT Stage 1 has reached substantial completion. Looking forward to having residents on aboard the O-Train,” wrote Dudas.

STAR STAFF – A proposed multiresidential development on Innes Road near Page Road is drawing controversy from area residents who say it’s too big.

Groupe Lepine is proposing to build a 16-storey building, two 12-storey buildings and five nine-storey buildings on the property formerly occupied by the Golf Lands Driving Range.

The buildings will contain 1,320 rental units in total, some of which will be earmarked for seniors. The plan also calls for 2,700 square metres of commercial space on the ground level of the high rise buildings.

Resident Douglas Day is one of those who is against the project as presented by the developer.

“This is crazy... the development is totally out of character with the existing neighbourhood and will play havoc with traffic on Innes Road and Orléans Blvd.,” Day wrote in a Facebook post.

But fellow resident Tammy Vine says she is in favour of the development.

“I think this is awesome,” she wrote in one of a string of comments on Innes Ward Coun. Laura Dudas’ Facebook page. It’s a perfect location for seniors and renters.”

Residents have until August 13 to provide their comments to the city. They can be sent directly to the city planner overseeing the project by emailing michael.boughton@ottawa.ca.

The comments will be passed on to the developer who may or may not amend their plans.

Coun. Dudas says she plans to organize a public meeting in September to allow residents a chance to provide further comment in person.

“This is a significant development being proposed for our community...

With that in mind, I will be organizing a meeting in early September for residents to pose their questions directly to the developer,” Dudas promises.

The submission can be found on the City of Ottawa website.

Exploding wagon wheel seriously injures Cumberland man

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star A Cumberland man is warning his fellow east end residents to take extra care when filling their wagon wheels up with air.

Leo Lane resident Mike Potvin was filling up the tires on his utility wagon on June 30 when the split rim on one of the tires blew apart causing severe lacerations to his face requiring more than 150 stitches, a broken orbital bone, a broken nose, a hole in his upper palate and the loss of more than a dozen dental implants.

“I had already filled up two of the tires and was filling up the third one, when it just exploded in my face.,” explains Potvin.

“At first I didn’t know what happened and then some of the implants fell out of my mouth into my hands and that’s when I noticed all the blood.”

Potvin’s partner, Jacynthe, was using a pressure washer to clean the landing on their home about 30 yards away and didn’t hear the explosion, or his cries for help.

He ended up walking over to her under his own power and then fell to his knees.

Jacynthe immediately called 9-1-1 and an ambulance arrived 10 minutes later which rushed him to the trauma unit at

the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus. He remained conscious the whole time. Once in the trauma unit, he was looked after by an entire team that included a cosmetic surgeon, a dental surgeon and a trauma doctor.

“They were unbelievable. I can’t say enough about how I was looked after, it was right out of one of those TV shows like ER,” describes Potvin.

Back home on the shore on the Ottawa River just over three weeks later, the 72-year-old Potvin looks remarkably better... all things considered. His biggest issue is his mouth. The exploding tire rim broke away a portion of the bone in his upper and lower jaw where the implants were drilled in. He may end up having to use a prosthetic denture.

Potvin says he was extremely lucky the metal rim didn’t hit him in the throat or take out his eye. He also wants to try and prevent a similar incident from happening in the future.

“It wasn’t the tire that blew up, it was the rim,” explains Potvin.

Most tire assemblies on wagons and dollies and put together with something called a split rim. The two halves of the rim are held together by a series of five bolts.

PHOTOS SUPPLIED As the rim corrodes over time, the metal around the bolts weakens. The older the rim gets and the longer it’s exposed to the elements the weaker it gets. Ultimately, it is prone to a critical failure. If enough pressure builds up in the tire, the force applied against the rim becomes too much with potentially dangerous consequences.

The best way to avoid potential injury is to use a cage around the wheel when inflating it, or replace the tires altogether before a catastrophe occurs.

“No way I had any idea it would blow up like that. It’s just a wagon for crying out loud,” says Potvin.

Normally, I would start this editorial with the words, “Doug Ford is an idiot”, but I won’t because I really want our Conservative-leaning readers to... well... read it.

The reason for my outrage and what should be the outrage of all Ontarians is the Ford government’s decision to slash funding to the Ontario Student Assistance Program, known more popularly as OSAP. The program disburses grants and loans to students attending colleges and universities in the province.

The previous Liberal government had been offering students whose family income was less than $50,000, up to a 30 percent rebate on tuition fees. The idea was to make post-secondary education more affordable and, ergo, more accessible to students from middle- and low-income families. How enlightened.

And then the Prince of Darkness was elected. Now I can understand that hundreds of thousands of Ontario voters had had enough with the Liberals and Kathleen Wynne in particular. They would have voted for pretty near anybody as long as they weren’t Liberal. But elections have consequences. Just ask the folks south of the border. I didn’t vote for Ford because I knew what he could be capable of. But never in a million years did I think that he would enact funding cuts to postsecondary education that would, in effect, disqualify hundreds if not thousands of students from attending college or university, and some who are currently midway through their studies, or on the verge of earning their degree.

Students who can’t earn a college diploma or university degree because they can’t access the necessary funds for tuition because either they or their parents aren’t in a position to pay for it means they are doomed to a life of low-paying jobs. It creates a vicious circle.

Post-secondary eduction should be made as accessible as possible to Ontario’s youth. Having a more educated population is good for everybody. Not so under a Ford government which is more interested in cheap beer than improving access to post-secondary. education Of course, the Ford government and its supporters will point to the fact that they also cut tuition by 10 percent. But if you cut tuition by 10 per cent and then cut OSAP by 20 per cent there’s no benefit at all, unless your family income is such that you don’t need to apply for OSAP. The Ford government also said that it would place a priority on benefiting students and then those students started applying for OSAP for next year and then – surprise, surprise – they found out that their OSAP funding was cut by up to 60 per cent next year compared to the past year. For some, it’s a difference a few hundred dollars which their parents can hopefully make up. For others it’s thousands of dollars.

Kids from single-parent families will be especially hard hit.

Imagine, if you can, being a single mother of two or three kids, all of whom dream of going to university. Now imagine one of them is already in university and the other has just graduated from high school and wants to follow in their sibling’s footsteps but can’t because you can’t afford it thanks to Doug Ford and his shortsighted, moronic decision. And now you get the picture.

A foodie’s guide to the best eats in Orléans When I took over the Orléans Star nearly three years ago one of missions was to promote the growing list of excellent restaurants in the area.

It wasn’t so long ago that the only two decent restaurants in Orléans were the Delicious Steakhouse and the Little Turkish Village. And while both of those eateries are still alive and doing well, nearly a dozen other restaurants have opened their doors in the past three years making the need to go downtown to enjoy a good meal obsolete.

One of the benefits of owning your own newspaper is the ability to sample what these new restaurants have to offer and write about it. In doing so, I’ve built up a list of my very favourite menu items from the various establishments. So in no particular order here they are...

1) The Lamb Burger – Little Turkish Village. Maybe it’s the lamb burger itself or maybe it’s the secret sauce on top, but if I was ever offered a last meal it would be hard not to order one of these.

2) The Lamb Chops – Persis Grill.

Eating the lamb chops at Persis Grill is like eating little lollipops of lamb dipped in mint sauce. Mmmm. Mmmm good.

3) Flambé Escargot – Da Nonna Maria Bistro Italiano. Yes, Chef Luigi makes a wicked Involtino, but I could eat the

of corn, tossed in an amazing creole sauce and wrapped in crisp green leaf lettuce.

Best served with a pint of Hellz Ya IPA. 7) The BBQ Ribs – Meatings Restaurant. Finger licking awesome. The Pulled Pork Sandwich is a close second. Both should be enjoyed with a side of cornbread and BBQed baked beans.

8) Brasserie Benedict – St. Martha’s Brasserie d’Orléans. A lot of restaurants in Orléans serve a great breakfast, but only St. Martha’s serves up one of the best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had.

9) Beer Braised Beef – Taproom 260.

Slow-cooked in Innis & Gunn oak-aged beer and served with sweet potato mash and seasonal veggies. It’s so tender you can eat it with a spoon.

10) Jarret d’Agneau – St. Martha’s Brasserie d’Orléans. This is one of the more pricey items on the list, but it’s worth every penny. Lamb shank braised in a warm Moroccan style sauce with tomatoes, olives, currants and almonds.

11) Grilled Octopus – Restaurante Caravela. I know what you are thinking, but if you have never tried octopus before you have to try the grilled octopus at Caravela. Personally prepared by owner Fernando Diniz, it is one of the top three things I would order on my death bed. It has the consistency of butter with a light

Fred Sherwin Flambé Escargot in the Sambuca cream sauce for breakfast, lunch and dinner and never get tired of them.

4) Gobi Garlic – Mumbai Marsala Grill. I have yet to eat anything at the Mumbai Marsala Grill that I didn’t like, but the Gobi Garlic is to die for. The deepfried cauliflower florets in garlic sauce are the East Indian equivalent of popcorn shrimp. In fact, I have yet to make it home with an order. The closest I got was Place d’Orléans, which is a little over halfway.

5) The Veal Marsala – Cucina De Vito.

While everything on the menu at Cucina is scrumpdillyicious, my go to dish is the Veal Marsala. Delicious. Divine. And Delightful.

6) The Po’Boy Shrimp Sandwich – Orléans Brewing Co. This is the newest item on my list and for good reason. It is eight inches of deliciousness stuffed to the gills with baby shrimp and fresh kernels

grilled flavour. If you’re still not sure about it, it also comes as an appetizer.

12) Fish Tacos – OCCO Kitchen. Yes OCCO makes great burgers (see below) and, yes, the Hot Smoked Atlantic Salmon is pretty darn good, but the Fish Tacos with Mango Cilantro Slaw and Caperberry Mayo are sublime.

13) Mole Enchiladas – Taqueria La Bonita. Yes, I know La Bonita isn’t located in Orléans. It’s located at the corner of Ogilvie and Cadboro Road, but the drive is more than worth it for the Mole Enchiladas. When you first take a bite, you are immediately transported to Mexico, the taste is that authentic.

14) Anything off the Sushi Menu at Soul Stone Sushi Grill & Bar. Hands down the best sushi in town and the Crispy Beef in spicy ginger sauce isn’t bad either.

15) Any of the wood-fired pizzas at St. Martha’s Brasserie Orléans. My personal favourite is the Porc fumé de Lavergne.

16) I’ve left the burgers for last on purpose. I know everyone has their favourite burger joint, but for my top three in no particular order are the Beau’s Burger at St. Martha’s, any of the burgers at OCCO Kitchen and the Big Blue Burger at Bite Burger in the Fallingbrook Shopping Plaza.

So there you have it – 16 of the best things to eat in Orléans. Bon appetit!

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star During the past four years Orléans has undergone a gastronomic renaissance of sorts with the opening of a plethora of excellent restaurants that have made area residents question the need to drive downtown for a decent meal.

The latest addition to the local culinary scene is the Orléans Brewing Co. on Innes Road. Now, I know what you’re thinking... what does a craft brewery have to do with food?

Forget about the fact that the OBC makes several excellent brews – more on that later – they also produce some pretty good eats. My personal favourite is the Po’Boy Shrimp Sandwich, but the Beef Tartare is also pretty tasty, as is the Torched Buratta, both of which I sampled during a recent visit to the establishment.

The Orléans Brewing Co. recently launched their new menu that is heavy on sample plates, which is just another word for “best sampled by two people”.

The Orléans Brewing Co. is a perfect place to take that special someone for a first date, or a date night, depending on whatever status your relationship happens to be. Besides the main bar, they have a mezzanine level that can accommodate small groups for special events nda patio that can seat up to 40 people.

“hobby” took over their garage and eventually their basement.

In 2013, the couple decided to explore the possibility of expanding Yann’s hobby into a business. After getting a tremendous amount of positive feedback at a series of 26 festivals that summer, including the Orléans Craft Beer Festival where they officially launched their first beer – the Billy Bob Bison APA – they began looking for a location for their brewery.

They settled on a space near the Innes Road McDonald’s that was previously occupied by Robertson Rent-All. The rest, as they say, is history.

When they decided to open their own micro brewery, Yann and Celia also decided to hire someone with a more scientific knowledge of the brewing process. Enter brew master Adam March. This has allowed Yann to spend more time managing the business, while Celia focuses on the marketing.

They also hired hired Anne-Marie help with the menu and and focus on front of house.

They currently serve eight different brews including March’s latest creation, Cody’s BREW, an Oatmeal Coffee Stout, which was developed in collaboration with former Ottawa Senator and Orléans native Cody Ceci.

The also have a Smokin’ Brown Ale; the Wit Willie Belgian wheat beer; the Kolsch Me Ousside lager; Sid’s Vicious IIPA; and BLACK HOP DOWN Russian Imperial Stout; along with their flagship brew, the Billy Bob Bison and my personal favourite the Hellz Ya IPA which is infused with a hint of orange citrus.

On top of their regular lineup of brews, they launch a special cask every Thursday at 4 p.m.

Besides the items already mentioned, the new menu includes snacks like home-made hummus, sardines, soft pretzels and chips and salsa.

The Orléans Brewing Co. Taproom is open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

MOOSE ON THE LOOSE II – For the second time in less than six weeks a stray moose found it’s way into the heart of Orléans. Ottawa Police and conservation officers were notified of the stray moose early Monday morning. They eventually cornered the animal between two homes near St. Peter High School where it was tranquilized and released into the wild in a forested area outside the city. It was a much happier ending than the situation in early June when a female moose succumbed to the stress after being tranquilized and moved to a forested area in Prescott-Russell after it also wandered into Fallingbrook.

OBC, Cody Ceci join forces to support Flutter Foundation ORLÉANS – The Orléans Brewing Co. has joined forces with Orléans native and current Maple Leaf Cody Ceci, to launch a new beer in support of Valerie’s Flutter Foundation. One dollar from the sale of every can of Cody’s Brew will go to support the foundation which was established in memory of Valérie Goneau, who succumbed to cancer in 2011 at the age of 20. Since it was launched in 2010, the foundation has raised over $400.000 to support bone cancer research.

Local pair to compete at youth equestrian meet ORLÉANS – A pair of local teens have been named to the Canadian equestrian team that will be competing North American Youth Equestrian Championships in New York State later this month. Navan resident Kiara Williams-Brown and fellow Queenswood Stables member Logan Iwanoff will both be competing in the dressage event as part of Junior Team Ontario. Williams-Brown will be competing on her horse Cluseau, while Iwanoff will compete on Linden Ein.

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Bryn Orth-Lashley is living every space enthusiast’s dream as one of the leads on Canada’s latest satellite mission.

The Orleans’ native is the Commissioning Coordinator for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM).

The RADARSAT Mission is made up of three satellites which were launched simultaneously on June 12 aboard a Space X Falcon 9 rocket.

The trio of Earth observation satellites are capable of scanning the Earth day or night and in any weather conditions. The three-satellite configuration allows for daily revisits of Canada’s vast territory and maritime approaches, as well as daily access to 90 per cent of the world’s surface and the Arctic up to four times a day.

The RCM is designed to provide effective solutions in three main areas: Maritime surveillance (ice, surface wind, oil pollution and ship monitoring); Disaster management (mitigation, warning, response and recovery); and Ecosystem monitoring (agriculture, wetlands, forestry and coastal change monitoring).

The data collected will help captains safely navigate through Arctic waters, farmers maximize their crop yields, first responders save lives, and much more.

Orth-Lashley first joined the project as a mission engineer. His job was to validate that the satellite system met all the required specifications as defined by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

He then transitioned to the Operations Development team based at CSA’s Mission Control Centre in St Hubert, Quebec and is one of the Mission Planning Leads responsible for booking communication times with the satellites and generating the commands that were sent to the spacecraft to control it.

“Satellite missions are large undertakings involving many different components and people – I help to make sure that it all fits properly to ensure a successful mission.” explains Orth-Lashley who is a graduate of the International Baccalaureate program at Colonel By Secondary School.

“Principally, I am involved with overseeing the implementation of the design of satellite systems from the satellite that gets launched into orbit to the software on the ground used to control the satellite to the personnel that actually operate the satellite.”

After earning his Master’s, Orth Lashley did a brief stint in the UK where he helped develop software for the International Space Station. Not long afterwards, he returned to Canada to work on the RCM project for MDA, the same company that built RADARSAT-2 and rhw Canadarm, essentially making his childhood dream of launching something into space come true.

“It’s thanks to the support of my family, friends, and mentors that I was able to make my childhood dream a reality,” says Orth-Lasley. “So thank you to the Orléans community.”

Orléans para-athlete enjoys productive last four weeks

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Orléans blind/death athlete Kevin Frost is enjoying another successful outdoor season with top 10 results in both tandem biking and golf over the past four weeks.

The season started with a fourth place finish in an 80km race in Montréal.

The event served as a warm-up for the Canadian Para Tandem Championships in Beauce, Quebec on June 25-28.

Competing with his new pilot, Phil Bergeron, Frost finished fifth on the track and fourth in the road race.

“It’s been a pretty productive year, all things considered,” says Frost. “Whenever you have a new pilot it takes a year or two to get to the top of your game.”

The 52-year-old didn’t skip a beat in trading in his tandem bike for a set of golf clubs.

Despite having a few issues with his putter, Frost still managed to finish in a tie for 14th place competing against some of the best blind golfers in North America at the Canadian Open Blind Golf Championships in Cranbrook, B.C. on July 12-13.

His low net score of 149 was good enough to place him in a tie for 10th place among the Canadians competing at the event and his low gross of 209 was good enough for fifth in his category.

“Overall I’m happy with my results so far,” says Frost. “I’m gaining momentum with each tournament. I just need to tweak my putting to lower my scores on the green.”

Next up for the multi-sport athlete is the Ontario Blind Golf Championships which are being held next month in Hamilton.

Navan Grads looking for families to billet players STAR STAFF – For many of us the choice to move out of the family home was a decision made when we were in our late teens, or even 20s.

If you think back, you will remember a lot of the anxiety that went along with this move. For a Junior A hockey player who leaves their family home to follow their dreams, they are not just leaving family and friends behind to go to a new city or town, but they are still expected to perform both on and off the ice in their new community.

Without caring billet families to ease this transition, our young athletes, and future stars might never make the decisions they do to pursue their dreams.

The Billet Family experience in most cases becomes a lasting relationship between the player, the players family and the billet family.

Past Navan Grads who have been billeted have served as great role models not only in their community, but for younger members of the billeting family who can learn from these players dedication and sacrifices to obtain their goals.

Often the billet family through this experience have gained a ‘new family

member’ who’s career they can monitor, be it at the college, semi-pro or even professional level.

To help assist Billet Families, the Navan Grads have put together a “Billet Manual” that is used as a guide for players and family billets.

As an extra bonus and to say “Thank You”, billeting families are financially compensated each week and also receive two tickets to all Grads home games, including the playoffs!

If you are interested in becoming a billet for a Grads hockey player you can call the club office at 613-835-4297; the team’s billet coordinator, Heather Bracken, will be happy to provide you with more information about the team’s billet program.

“The importance of billet families to our hockey team is immeasurable,” team GM Marty Abrams. stresses. “Simply put, without the billet families we could not put a team on the ice. They provide an environment of support and trust for the billeted players.”

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Cumberland Panther running back Khalid Campbell wrapped up an impressive showing at the Football Quebec Team Nike XL Challenge held earlier this month with an MVP performance in leading the Ottawa Jr Gee-Gees U15 team to the bronze medal.

Campbell ran for 354 yards on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 38-6 win over RSEQ Monteregie. His longest TD run was a 95-yard scamper in the third quarter. He also caught two passes for 23 yards and returned a pair of punts for 68 yards for a total of 445 combined yards on offence. He also made four unassisted tackles on defence, The U15 team kicked off the tournament with a 30-6 win over the Metropolitaine and Campbell put everyone on notice with a 181-yard, three touchdown performance.

In Game 2 they suffered a tough 42-18 loss to the Monstars, but Campbell still

managed to score all three of his team’s touchdowns while gaining 297 total yards.

He would end the tournament with 783 yards and nine TDs in three games. The next closest running back had 349 yards.

The U15 team is an all-star squad put together by the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) with the express purpose of playing against some of the best teams in Quebec in the Team Nike XL Challenge. Before entering the tournament they played a series of exhibition games with mixed results.

NCAFA were also able to field a U17 team. After losing their first two games in the tournament, they managed to knock off the Outaouais to avoid being swept.

Former Panther Colin Doherty caught nine passes for 175 yard including a touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter.

The man who threw him all those passes was Connor Vanasse who ended the game with 15 completions for 311 yards and three TDs.
