Final prep for Canada Day celebrations

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The final preparations are being made for this year’s Canada Day celebrations which are being held this Monday on Petrie Island, in Blackburn Hamlet and in the Village of Vars.

The grand daddy of them all is the Petrie Island Canada Day event which has been held every year since 2003, except for a brief hiatus from 2014 to 2016.

During the past two years the event has been marred by severe rainfall in 2017 and oppressive heat last year that left local resident seeking relief in their backyard pools and air conditioned houses, if they weren’t at the cottage.

The long-range forecast for Monday is looking extremely promising with temperatures expected to be in the mid- to high-20s

and the potential for an afternoon shower.

The proceedings will get underway with the opening of the Kids Tent and the inflatable rides for the young ones and the Beverage Tent for those people 19 and older.

The official opening ceremony will take place on the main state at 12 noon, with the cake-cutting ceremony to take place shortly afterwards.

One of the main attractions of the Petrie Island Canada Day Celebration is the live entertainment which features a number of local acts, including headliners The Bytown Lights.

Parking will be available in the La Cité parking lot and a nearby field on the North Service Road at a nominal fee and with free shuttle service to the site. Proceeds will be used to help offset the cost of the event.

VIP parking is also available on the island itself. Passes can be purchased for $100 and include four meal tickets redeemable for a hamburger or hot dog with chips and a drink and in and out privileges up to 7 p.m. when the causeway leading to the island is closed for safety reasons. The shuttle service is also terminated at 7 p.m.

The reason is simple. By 7 p.m. the sheer number of pedestrians using the causeway makes it extremely dangerous to run vehicles on the causeway at the same time. So anyone with a VIP parking pass must leave the island by 7 p.m. or wait until after the fireworks at 10 p.m.

For those people who wish to avoid the big crowds, smaller events are taking place in Blackburn Hamlet and Vars.

The celebration in Blackburn Hamlet gets underway at 5 p.m. with a 3-on-3 hockey tournament hosted by former NHLer Mark Fraser. Kids activities, volleyball and water sports will take place in the park and a potluck dinner will be held in the Community Hall.

The beer garden will also open at 5 p.m. The live entertainment begins at 6 p.m. with Karmacode followed by free Canada Day cake at 7 p.m.

The music will continue at 9 p.m. with the Fake McCoys followed by fireworks at 10 p.m.

The Canada Day celebration in Vars is being held in Alcide Trudeau Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include a community BBQ, inflatable rides, children’s games and face-painting. Fireworks will follow at the corner of Boundary and Russell Roads in Carlsbad Springs at 10 p.m.

Maple Ridge students learn about peers in Sierra Leone

By Fred Sherwin Special to the Orléans Star On Thursday, June 20t, “globallyminded” students at Maple Ridge Elementary in Orléans had the unique opportunity to meet the Deputy Minister of Education from the West African country of Sierra Leone. This event came on the heels of students raising funds for the Ottawabased charity CODE, whose mission is to improve the quality of education in Sierra Leone as well as other African countries.

Sierra Leone is a small country in West Africa that saw a decade-long conflict come to an end in 2002 only to be devastated by the Ebola crisis from May 2014 to March 2016. According to UNESCO (2016), only 47.07% of girls and 46.97% of boys make it to the final grade of primary school in Sierra Leone. It is estimated that less than half of all primary teachers have any teaching qualifications.

Grade 5/6 students put their own spin on the well-known Canadian show, Dragon’s Den. While learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), students were tasked with researching an organization that is currently working towards one of the seventeen SDGs. In groups, students

brought a pitch to the class’ Dragon’s Den for a fundraising initiative to support the organization that they selected.

The group that gained the most support chose to hold bake sales for CODE who is working to advance SDG #4: Quality Education. The school community’s generosity surpassed all expectations allowing Kathy Michaud-Roussel’s Grade 5/6 students to double their initial goal of $500, raising $1050.05.

On Thursday, the Honourable Emily Gogra shared with the students about the impact their hard work will have upon the lives of students like themselves who do not currently have access to educational resources in their classrooms. The class’ gift will go towards the development and distribution of books that are locally published and culturally relevant.

Ms. Emily Gogra, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Education had travelled to Ottawa to attend CODE’s 60th Anniversary event on June 20th. This political appointment is the first for Ms. Gogra, who is a teacher, teacher educator, humanitarian activist, long-time supporter of CODE, and founder of the St. Martin’s Orphanage in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone’s education sector under President Bio’s new administration – an administration that has made education a top priority in the recent national election.

To further CODE’s work in Sierra Leone, the Honourable Maryam Monsef,

Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality, announced at CODE’s 60th anniversary event, held at the Museum of Nature, a $5-million contribution to support CODE’s Transforming Girls’ Education project.

An estimated 200 educators at four teacher’s colleges will receive training through this project which will enable approximately 160,000 students to access quality education in Sierra Leone moving forward.

Honourary Granny ‘front and centre’ at OOPS production

By Heather Jamieson The Orléans Star As she has for the majority of the Orleans Older Players (OOPS) plays for the past nine years, Jean Preston was sitting front row centre for its most recent production “It’s a Hard Knock OOPS.” Preston is the closest thing OOPS has to a super fan, which is all the more remarkable because not only does she live in Kanata, she turned 103 in May. Her path to becoming the honourary “Granny” of the Ottawa School of Theatre’s (OST) recreational adult class began with a ladybug and a princess: the roles played respectfully by Sue Ashton and Céline Nadeau in their first OOPS play in 2010. The duo has performed together in 17 of the past 18 OOPS productions.

Under the direction of popular teacher Susan Flemming, the class puts on two productions per year.

Ashton and Nadeau’s path to the stage began when they went to see Ashton’s granddaughter Keely Tierney in an OST play (then Orleans Young Players) at the Cumberland Town Hall Theatre. Inspired by the production, Nadeau, a friend of Keely’s mother, and Ashton decided to try their hand at theatre and haven’t looked back. Despite about a 20-year difference in

their ages, they have become close friends and are a formidable pair when performing together.

“Their close connection is palpable when I’ve paired them on stage,” says Flemming. “It’s almost like a magnetic force when they work together.”

Preston, the mother-in-law of Ashton’s younger brother Jamie Duckett, was a youngster of 94 when she attended the duo’s premier performance in the Shenkman Arts Centre in 2010. Only ill health or bad weather has kept her from attending subsequent OOPS performances.

Widowed in 2002, Preston was still living in her two-storey townhouse and driving when she first started attending their plays. In 2012, the active senior fell at a granddaughter’s hockey game and broke her pelvis, which precipitated her move into a retirement home. She thoroughly enjoyed the OOPS production of “It’s a Hard Knock OOPS,” in which Ashton and Nadeau play residents of Rhode’s End, a boarding house that is home for a group of down-on-their-luck actors and stage crew.

The feisty residents hope for a second chance at fame with a remount of the 1977 hit musical Annie. But the conniving Miss Rhodes, who runs the establishment, is determined to undermine their plans. The

The longevity of OOPS speaks to the value of drama for people of all ages. It is designed as a recreational class, with the primary goal of giving adults a break from their normal routines while building selfconfidence. But, most of all, it’s designed to be fun. Working together is a huge factor

in Flemming and Ashton’s remnaining in the program for so long.

Having Preston become such a loyal supporter is a real bonus, says Ashton. In May, the cast and crew made a video of them singing Happy Birthday which was played at her 103rd birthday party.

Normally, I would start this editorial with the words, “Doug Ford is an idiot”, but I won’t because I really want our Conservative-leaning readers to... well... read it.

The reason for my outrage and what should be the outrage of all Ontarians is the Ford government’s decision to slash funding to the Ontario Student Assistance Program, known more popularly as OSAP. The program disburses grants and loans to students attending colleges and universities in the province.

The previous Liberal government had been offering students whose family income was less than $50,000, up to a 30 percent rebate on tuition fees. The idea was to make post-secondary education more affordable and, ergo, more accessible to students from middle- and low-income families. How enlightened.

And then the Prince of Darkness was elected. Now I can understand that hundreds of thousands of Ontario voters had had enough with the Liberals and Kathleen Wynne in particular. They would have voted for pretty near anybody as long as they weren’t Liberal. But elections have consequences. Just ask the folks south of the border. I didn’t vote for Ford because I knew what he could be capable of. But never in a million years did I think that he would enact funding cuts to postsecondary education that would, in effect, disqualify hundreds if not thousands of students from attending college or university, and some who are currently midway through their studies, or on the verge of earning their degree.

Students who can’t earn a college diploma or university degree because they can’t access the necessary funds for tuition because either they or their parents aren’t in a position to pay for it means they are doomed to a life of low-paying jobs. It creates a vicious circle.

Post-secondary eduction should be made as accessible as possible to Ontario’s youth. Having a more educated population is good for everybody. Not so under a Ford government which is more interested in cheap beer than improving access to post-secondary. education Of course, the Ford government and its supporters will point to the fact that they also cut tuition by 10 percent. But if you cut tuition by 10 per cent and then cut OSAP by 20 per cent there’s no benefit at all, unless your family income is such that you don’t need to apply for OSAP. The Ford government also said that it would place a priority on benefiting students and then those students started applying for OSAP for next year and then – surprise, surprise – they found out that their OSAP funding was cut by up to 60 per cent next year compared to the past year. For some, it’s a difference a few hundred dollars which their parents can hopefully make up. For others it’s thousands of dollars.

Kids from single-parent families will be especially hard hit.

Imagine, if you can, being a single mother of two or three kids, all of whom dream of going to university. Now imagine one of them is already in university and the other has just graduated from high school and wants to follow in their sibling’s footsteps but can’t because you can’t afford it thanks to Doug Ford and his shortsighted, moronic decision. And now you get the picture.

Decision to cut embassy staff in Cuba es ridiculo The Liberal government’s recent decision to reduce our embassy in Havana, Cuba to a skeleton staff and severely cut services previously provided to Cuban residents wishing to visit Canada is shortsighted, mean-spirited and wrong.

The Trudeau government has said the decision was made to protect the health of Canadian diplomats, some of whom reported suffering concussion-like symptoms caused by an unidentified source.

A total of 14 Canadian diplomats and their family members have displayed the same symptoms of headaches, nausea and dizzyness over the past two years, 12 of whom were recalled in 2017.

The most recent case – and the case the Trudeau government’s decision was based on – occurred last November. The initial announcement that Canada would be reducing embassy staff was made on January 19, but it wasn’t carried out until May 9. If the issue was so serious, why the delay? And why allow any staff to remain at all if their health was so gravely at risk?

The thought that the Cuban government would target embassy staff is ridiculous.

Canada is, and always has been, one of the most important countries to the Cuban economy – if not the most important country – dating back to the post-revolu-

Relations between Canada and Cuba grew even stronger after Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s three-day visit to the country in 1976 which planted the seeds of a close personal friendship. In fact, Castro was a honourary pallbearer at Trudeau’s funeral in 2000.

To quantify the importance of Canada to the Cuban economy one needs to look no further than the number of tourists who visit the country every year. In 2017, more 1.1 million Canadians visited Cuba. The next two largest contingents came from the U.S.A. (618,000) and then Germany (243,000). In fact, Canadians make up one-quarter of all visitors to Cuba. We fill their resorts, support the growing number

of Airbnbs in the country known as casa particulars and eat in their paladares.

In other words, we pump hundreds of millions of dollars into their economy supporting everyone from taxi drivers to chamber maids. If you simply take into account the $25 exit fee that is included in every airline ticket to Cuba, that’s $25.3 million. So why on earth would the Cuban government risk all that by using untrasonic surveillance equipment that might endanger the health of Canadian diplomats and their dependents? The answer is they wouldn’t.

And if some of our people are complaining of these symptoms than simply replace them. Since the initial outbreak in 2017 only two people have complained of concussion-like symptoms. That’s two out of more than 16 staff members and their families.

The impact of the staff reduction on Cubans wishing to visit Canada has been devastating. In a word, they can’t. I will give you a personal example. I was planning to bring a Cuban friend of mine to Ottawa in August. When I inquired about how he could obtain a visa since the embassy is no longer processing visa applications I was told that he would have to visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in person.

Naturally, I asked where the nearest VAC was. The person answered without realizing the idiocy of the words that followed – Mexico City. I then asked the individual on the other end of the line if they had a map of the Caribbean and Central America and tried to provide them with a short geography lesson.

First, Mexico is not a city in Cuba and second it is both physically and financially possible for a Cuban to hop on over to Mexico City for the sole purpose of applying for a visa and then hoping back over several weeks later to pick it up, assuming it’s been approved.

The decision means that students who were either hoping to study in Canada or were already enrolled in a program won’t get to continue their studies and Cuban nationals won’t get to visit their loved ones visiting Canada.

I have a different theory on why Canada has decided to reduce it’s staff and services in Cuba and it has everything to do with Trudeau wanting to appease Donald Trump to avoid tariffs and over trade issues. In street parlance it’s called kissing ass and the old man is no doubt rolling in his grave over his son’s gutless decision. For the sake of ordinary Cubans and future Cuba-Canada relations let’s hope it’s only temporary.

Local girl wins Pan Am gold in taekwondo

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Orléans resident Naila Mohamed, 16, recently returned from the Pan-American Taekowndo championships in Costa Rica with two medals including a gold medal in the -42kg class in the Open Championship and a silver medal at the same weight level in the Junior Pan-Am Championship.

Mohamed qualified for the Pan-Am tournament after a grueling process at the national championships in February in which she had to fight six times in one day including three fights against the same girl. Because it was a double elimination format, Mohamed was given a second chance after suffering her first loss. She made the most of the opportunity by beating the same girl who had defeated her in the earlier fight,in both the semifinal and the final.

Skip ahead to the Pan Am championships opened with competition at both the Cadet and Junior levels. Unfortunately, Mohamed lost her one and only fight against the only other competitor at her weight level. The silver lining was a silver medal, which Mohamed felt she didn’t earn. The loss left a bitter taste in her mouth and a deep desire to redeem herself in the Open Championship the next day.

“I really wanted to win badly. I didn’t go all that way to lose my first fight and go home,” says Mohamed, who beat her Puerto Rican opponent in the final 14 points to eight.

The Grade 11 Cairine Wilson Secondary School student started taking taekwondo lessons at the age of four. Her parents were already members at the Phoenix Taekwnondo Academy which operated out of the OAC at the time.

Louis-Riel Rebelles win girls and boys bronze at OFSAA championships STAR STAFF – Both the girls and boys soccer teams at École secondaire publique Louis-Riel finished theire seasons on a high note earlier this month by winning a pair of bronze medals at the OFSAA provincial single-A soccer championships in Hamilton for schools whose enrollment is under 750 students.

The girls team finished in first place in their pool with a 4-0 record with wins over Jean Vanier Catholic High School (31), Acton District (4-0), École secondaire Algonquin (2-0) and Emmanuel Chirstian High School (2-1).

They then beat Smithville Christian High School 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs to advance to the semi-finals where they put out a strong performance

before ultimately losing to École secondaire Le Relais from Alexandria 2-1.

Three hours later they managed to bounce back to beat Lord Dorchester Secondary School from London 2-1 to win the bronze medal.

The Rebelles senior boys team finished second in their pool with a 3-1 record with their only loss coming against Hamilton Christian. After upsetting École secondaire Ronald Marion from Pickering in the first round of the playoffs they lost to Glengarry High School 3-1 in the semifinals. But like their female schoolmates, they too managed to bounce back after a disappointing loss to win the bronze medal with a 2-0 win over St. Paul Secondary School from Mississauga.

“My parents started me in taekwondo because it teaches you discipline and respect and we didn’t think we would do

any tournaments until a few years ago when our instructor suggested I sould try it out.”

Mohamed is looking forward to competing in her final year as a junior next year when the Junior World Championships will be held in Burnaby, B.C.
