By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star In less than a week, those Orléans residents who didn’t vote in the advance polls will get their chance to cast a ballot for the candidate of their choice in the 2019 federal election.

Voting will start at 9:30 a.m. next Monday, Oct. 21, and will close 12 hours later at 9:30 p.m. Locally, Liberal candidate Marie-France Lalonde remains the favourite, while national polls showing a dead heat between the Liberals and the Conservatives have given her Conservative challenger David Bertschi hope of a possible upset.

Those hopes hinge on a relatively high voter turnout which often manifests itself in an anti-incumbent sentiment, especially if the polling is close – and a strong showing by the local NDP and Green Party candidates who traditionally pull votes away from the Liberals.

Conversely, Lalonde is hoping for a low

voter turnout similar to what happened in 2011, when less than 73 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot to return then-MP Royal Galipeau to the House of Commons.

Four years later, area residents came out to the polls in droves to toss out Galipeau and replace him with Liberal candidate Andrew Leslie. Voter turnout was nearly nine per cent higher than in 2011, making it one of the highest voter turnouts in recent memory.

Leslie isn’t running this time around – he announced his retirement in May, opening the door for a potential successor.

University of Ottawa student Jacqui Wiens was already given the nod to run for the NDP before Leslie made his announcement.

The next person to get in the race was Bertschi. The Orléans resident, lawyer and former Liberal candidate beat out two other candidates to win the local Conservative nomination.

Victory in next week’s election would be sweet redemption for the former Liberal, who was disqualified by the Liberal Party in the run up to the nomination meeting in 2015, which paved the way for Leslie to get the nod unopposed.

Four years earlier, Bertschi ran unsuccessfully to try and unseat Galipeau who was the incumbent at the time.

Dissatisfied with the direction the Liberal government was taking under the leadership of Prime Minister Justine Trudeau, Bertschi decided to switch his allegiance. He is especially upset with what he sees as a total lack of respect of the law and federal institutions, made most evident with Trudeau’s handling of the SNC Lavalin affair.

Lalonde has made a switcheroo of her own, relinquishing her seat in the provincial legislature a little more than a year after being re-elected in the 2018 provincial election. She did so because of a strong desire to keep Orléans Liberal.

Her campaign has focused on her experience as an MPP for the past four and a half years and her various accomplishments in that position, which include securing funding for the Orléans Health Hub, the Blackburn Arena retrofit and expansion and Phase 2 of the LRT. Besides Lalonde, Bertschi and Wiens, the two other names on the ballot in Orléans are Green Party candidate Michelle Petersen and People’s Party of Canada hopeful Roger Saint-Fleur.

Petersen is a psychotherapist with more than 15 years of experience in the social services sector. Born and raised in Orléans, she is fluently bilingual.

A single mother with a five-year-old son, Petersen decided to run for the Green Party to help promote their social justice and environmental policies, the most important of which is to combat climate change.

Saint-Fleuve is a part-time professor at the Saint Paul University who possesses a doctorate in theology.

You can compare questionnaires filled out by four of the five candidates on pages three and five. The Star was unable to find an e-mail address for Dr. Saint-Fleuve, which is why he did not fill one out.

Local federal election candidates answer key questions Up until the point she won the federal Liberal nomination, Marie-France Lalonde represented the riding of Orléans as a member of the Ontario legislature.

She was first elected to Queen’s Park in 2014 and succeeded former Liberal MPP Phil McNeely.

Prior to entering politics, Lalonde had a long career in social work and senior care.

Most notably, she was the co-owner and executive director of the Portobello Manor retirement home in Orléans.

1) Why did you decide to give up your provincial seat one year after the election to run federally?’

As a lifelong Liberal, there is nothing more important to me than keeping Orléans red, standing up for residents and preventing the kind of cuts we are seeing with the Ford government in Ontario.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team are the only party with a positive plan to protect our economy, strengthen our middle class and grow our economy. I believe that I am the best person to represent Orléans at the federal level. I have the experience as a former business owner, social worker and local representative.

2) In your opinion, what is the most important issue being discussed during this election?

The environment. From young people who I have met with in schools, to parents, to seniors, everyone is very concerned about their futures and those of their children and grandchildren. They are very concerned that a conservative government will reverse and halt our progress on the environment. The Liberal party is the only party with a real plan to protect the environment and grow our economy. A re-elected Liberal government will build on this progress, and continue to take ambitious action to fight climate change, by committing Canada to net zero by 2050, planting two billion trees, and making our country the best place in the world to build a clean tech company.

3) Is there one particular issue you would like to champion if elected to represent Orléans?

Jobs. I want to ensure our community is on the table when new jobs and business opportunities arise. The LRT to Trim Rd is a game changer and we need to ensure the train leaves full and comes back full. I will work with counterparts on the St. Joseph revitalization to bring more jobs and business to Orléans.

If elected, I will also work to attract new Clean Tech firms to Orléans with the new tax cut incentive to creMarie-France ate quality local Lalonde jobs. For the public service workers in Orléans, I want to monitor and potentially expand the pilot project at Place d’Orléans that offers alternative work hubs for public servants.

4) List what you believe are the three most important planks in your party’s platform?

Support for seniors, families and health care. The Liberal party has accomplished a lot in the past four years – we’ve introduced the Canada Child Benefit, 40,000 child care spaces, took the first steps toward a National Pharmacare system, and restored the age of Old Age Security to 65 from 67. Our plan is to continue building on these successes. We will continue to move forward with investments that give our seniors a better quality of life, with stronger supports to help make ends meet.

For families, we will give up to $1,000 more to help when the costs of raising kids are highest, by boosting the CCB by 15 per cent for children under the age of one.

Orléans lawyer and former Liberal candidate in the 2011 federal election David Bertschi is hoping to become only the second Conservative in the last 120 years to represent the riding in the House of Commons.

In doing so, he is hoping to follow in the footsteps another former Liberal turned Conservative, the late Royal Galipeau, who served as MP from 2006-2014.

1) Why did you decide to switch parties?

I am often asked why I left the Liberal party, but the Liberal party left me. I have always believed in fiscal responsibility, leadership on the world stage and having respect for our Canadian democracy and institutions. The current Liberal party is left of the NDP and threw away their principles in the pursuit of power. When I look at Andrew Scheer and the Conservative party, I see a welcoming home for Red Tory/Blue Liberals like myself.

2) In your opinion, what is the most important issue being discussed during this election?

Over the last four years, costs have continued to rise, whether we are talking gasoline, home heating or housing. I talk to seniors every day who worry about how they are going to pay their next hydro bill. I often speak with families worried about how they are going to tell their kids they can’t afford to put them in hockey or ringette this year. I am proud that our campaign is championing these people and coming up with dozens of proposals on how we can make their lives more affordable and help them get ahead.

3) Is there one particular issue you would like to champion if elected to represent Orléans?

Orléans needs a champion, someone who is going to be a voice for Orléans in Parliament, not Parliament’s voice in Orléans. I’ve lived here for over 30 years, and every day I’ve made the same commute just like tens of thousands of

Orléans residents. I know that residents are eagerly awaiting the completion of Phase 2 of the LRT, but it is not going to be able to fix all of our traffic woes. That is why we also need to work to better expand the road infrastructure in southern Orléans, so commuters who still have to drive to work will get there faster. For me, that means turning the existing bus lanes on the 174 to an EV and HOV lane, and we also need the NCC to embrace Option 7 and extend Brian Coburg to Blair Rd. More importantly, we need to David Bertschi bring a government department to Orléans. When we bring jobs here, it makes the lives of people in Orléans better, and it is also better for the environment. It’s a win-win.

4) List what you believe are the three most important planks in your party’s platform?

1. Scrapping the Trudeau Carbon Tax will have the single most significant impact at making life more affordable, scrapping it will lower the cost of everyday essentials like gas, groceries, and home heating.

2. The Universal Tax Cut will cut taxes for those in the lowest income bracket. This will save a single taxpayer up to $440 per year and the average family more than $850 per year on their Income Tax. 3. Increasing the Age Credit for seniors, especially those on fixed incomes, a Conservative government will increase the Age Credit by $1,000 per year per senior. For a couple, it will mean up to $300 more in their pockets.

City Building • The O-Train Confederation Line opened to the public on September 14. It was the busiest LRT system on Day 1 in North America • The construction of Stage 2 LRT is now underway, and will bring fast and reliable rail to communities farther east, west and south • The Flora Footbridge, which connects the communities of Old Ottawa East and the Glebe, as well as Lansdowne Park, was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, and officially opened to the public in June • An additional $9.8 million being invested into roads, bridges, culverts, bike lanes, sidewalks and City facilities in 2019, bringing the total roads and infrastructure budget to $128.5 million

Local federal election candidates answer key questions Michelle Petersen is a Registered Psychotherapist with more than 15 years experience in the community services sector. She grew up in Orléans and returned to the community to raise her five-year-old son. As a kid, she attended Des Voyageurs, Léo D. Côté and Garneau schools and she is a long-time supporter of the Green Party and its policies.

1) Why did you decide to run for the Green Party?’

My decision to run is based on my belief that all Canadians should have access to clean water, clean air, affordable housing, education and employment and health services including mental health services.

Most importantly, I decided to run because I want my child, and his children: • to grow old in a country that is leading the way towards social and environmental justice for all; • to prosper from the unlimited opportunities of a green economy; • to see his mom standing up for what she believes in, and taking concrete action to reverse the climate emergency while growing a sustainable future for generations to come.

All of us have a responsibility to ourselves and our families to live the best life we can in spite of the challenges we face. I believe the Green Party offers us the best plan for getting there.

2) In your opinion, what is the most important issue being discussed during this election?

The climate emergency. Swift and urgent action must be taken to address the current and future impacts of climate change, while at the same time leveraging the infinite possibilities of a green economy.

We can do both; and our eight priorities, driven by our 20-point Mission: Possible, will get us there: 1. Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples 2. Addressing the Climate Emergency 3. Transitioning to a Green Economy 4. Invoking Ecological Wisdom 5. Renewing the Social Contract

6. Advancing the Just Society 7. Good Governance 8. International Relations and Defence 3) Is there one particular issue you would like to champion if elected to represent Orléans?

I want to bring Orléans together. I’d like to be a champion of collaboration and community.

I imagine green infrastructure that enables people to get around quickly and easily, using public transit, cycling and pedestrian lanes. I will put Orléans on the map by starting a national movement to Michelle Petersen reduce idling at drive-thrus (identified by Natural Resources Canada as a major contributor to Greenhouse Gas Emissions) by starting small with #walkinwednesdays. I will work with the NCC, municipal and provincial governments to bring out the potential in Orléans – promoting its indigenous and francophone heritage, its diverse communities, and preserving its natural resources and beauty.

4) List what you believe are the three most important planks in your party’s platform?

1. Addressing the Climate Emergency – if we fail to do this, all efforts to build a safe, healthy, prosperous community will be in vain.

2. Renewing the Social Contract – because the health and well-being of our people is intricately linked to the prosperity of our economy and of our people.

3. Good Governance – as Canadians are increasingly disillusioned and distrustful towards politicians. Electoral reform is long overdue.

Jacqui Wiens is a history and political science student at the University of Ottawa. She decided to run for the NDP party in the spring after successfully managing Erica Braunovan’s campaign for school board trustee in Ottawa.

She was the first candidate to register in the riding.

Wiens is a member of Ottawa’s LGBTQ community and an activist who has collaborated with organizations such as “ACORN”, “Fight for $15 and Fairness”, “Fair Vote Canada” and “Our Time” to promote healthy communities served by public transit, quality jobs, education quality and a complete health system 1) Why did you decide to run for the New Democratic Party?

I decided to run for the NDP for a number of reasons. First of all, I believe the NDP has the best platform to address the systemic and urgent issues facing Canadians in a compassionate and holistic way. I also think that representation is incredibly important, especially for young people, and wanted to show other young, queer folks that they can aspire to positions of power within our government.

2) In your opinion, what is the most important issue being discussed during this election?

The most important issue in this election is, without a doubt, the climate crisis. We need to mobilize the entire country to phase out fossil fuels and build more sustainable systems. The NDP will provide training and income supports to workers as they transition from these carbon-intensive jobs to new work in the green economy. We will also create jobs in renewable energy, carbon neutral infrastructure, and housing retrofits, as well as building 500,000 new affordable housing units.

While it hasn’t received nearly enough attention, the intertwined issue of indigenous rights, reconciliation, and the ongoing genocide in this country is a close second.

3) Is there one particular issue you would like to champion if elected to represent Orléans?

In Orléans, I would champion moving public service jobs to the east end as part of a broad vision to make the neighbourhood more sustainable and accessible for all.

This would not only reduce commute times and the associated stress for many of our local public servants, but would help to reduce vehicle emissions and congestion during rush hours.

Additionally, I would push to create inclusive, walkable neighbourhoods with affordable housing. The NDP’s pledge to provide more stable and predictable longterm funding for transit, while also helping to electrify public transit fleets and help to make service free in municipalities which chose to do so would support this vision.

4) List what you believe are the three most important planks in your party’s platform?

The most important NDP planks are our plan to tackle climate change, to expand our medicare system, and to make sure the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

Canada is facing a climate emergency and we need a government with the courage to make the right choices for our environment and for people. We also need to establish a new deal for health care that includes pharmacare for everyone and we need to create a tax system in which we close tax loopholes, raise the capital gains tax and implement a 1% wealth tax on assets over $20 million.

Educate yourself In four days, folks in Orléans and across Canada will be heading to the polls to vote in the federal election.

Some will vote along party lines, some will vote for the candidate who impressed them the most without regard to party affiliation and some will cast their ballot based on a particular issue.

Unfortunately, thousands will vote without any regard to the respective party’s platform or not vote at all.

Several years ago I was invited to be a panel member at a symposium on western democracy and the Canadian electoral process. I was one of nine speakers at the event as a representative of the media. One of the audience members asked for our opinion on mandatory voting.

I was the last of the nine speakers to respond. After all eight of the previous speakers whole-heartedly supported the concept of mandatory voting it was my turn.

“Absolutely not,” I responded. “The problem is not that not enough people vote. The problem is that too many of the people who do vote have no idea what they’re voting for.”

This is especially true in municipal elections, where most people automatically vote for the incumbent, or the first name on the ballot.

It’s also the reason why I don’t like referendums.

The only people who benefit from mandatory voting are the incumbents We don’t need more people voting. We need more people casting an educated vote.

If you are one of the thousands of people out there who are still undecided, my suggestion is to do some research. Peel yourself away from Facebook or YouTube long enough to visit the respective parties’ websites.

If you have a particular issue that is important to you, try e-mailing each of the local candidates for their respective positions on that issue. Some will get back to you sooner rather than later and some may not get back to you at all. Judge them accordingly.

If a candidate cares enough about your vote they will get back to you. How long it takes largely depends on how busy they are, but it also may be an indication of how organized or unorganized they are. A well organized campaign will assign a staffer or volunteer to monitor the incoming emails and ensure any questions from voters are responded to in a timely and satisfactory manner.

Finally, there’s a lot to be said about voting for a candidate without regard to their party affiliation. First, of all there is no guarantee that the candidate’s party will form the next government, and in the case of the NDP and Green Party, the candidates almost certainly won’t. If you are trying to decide which candidate to vote for consider which one would be the most effective if you have a federal issue that needs to be addressed like a passport issue, or a federal pension or EI issue etc. And do your homework.

Still writing after all these years My, how the time has flown by.

It was 30 years ago this week that I ran into former Orléans Star editor James MacArthur in a downtown bar and asked him if he could use a photographer.

James had just taking over as editor of The Star after a stint with the Napanee Beaver and I had just returned to Ottawa after being laid off by the now-defunct Montreal Daily News.

As it turned out, The Star already had a photographer. So after telling him that I had written a few stories while I was in Montréal, he invited me to write a guest column on whatever subject I wanted. I chose Hallowe’en.

To be more precise, I chose to write a sarcastic, tongue-in-check critique of why Hallowe’en should be banned which you can read on the page opposite.

Soon after my column was published, the newsroom received six letters to the editor from readers who took umbrance with my position.

The most letters to the editor the paper received previously on any one topic was three. The publisher at the time, Gord Brewerton, was suitably impressed and the rest, as they say, is history.

I started writing a regular weekly column, which appeared on page seven,

After leaving The Star in July 2001, I continued writing a regular column on OrleansOnline.ca until I purchased the paper in October, 2016.

All told, I’ve probably written over 1,000 columns along with several thousand more stories.

Back in the day my columns were a mix of political commentary and personal pageantry. During the first few, I wrote much in the same as the old saying “Dance like no one’s watching”. Well, I wrote like no one was reading.

Some of my most popular columns were the ones which I wrote about my personal life and especially my now exwife and kids.

Way, way back in the day I would often reference the Girlfriend, who then became the Wife and eventually the Ex-

Wife who is now our creative genius and production manager.

One of my favourite letters to the editor came from a reader who took exception to my calling my wife “The Wife”. “Doesn’t she have a name?” the person asked. To which I responded that “The Wife” was a much better moniker than my original nickname for her: “The Old Ball and Chain”. The kicker is that the offended reader was a man.

The column that generated the most e-mail was the one in which I called for a ban on pets and argued that if you needed a dog for companionship you should go out and find a friend. I also argued that the $7 billion Canadians spend annually on pet food, supplies and services might be better spent on feeding and housing the homeless.

It was meant as tongue-in-cheek social commentary, but apparently a great many pet owners in Orléans didn’t find it very funny. Go figure.

Without a doubt, the column I am most proud of was actually an obituary I wrote for the Gannon family after Erin Gannon succumbed to cancer on April 26, 2004 at the age of 18.

Her grandmother personally asked me to write something. It took me over 10 hours working through the night to pen

what I thought was a fitting tribute to an incredible young woman. Days afterward, the family reached out to thank me. It was one of the proudest moments of my career in journalism.

There have been other columns and stories that made me proud to be a journalist in this community.

When I first started OrleansOnline.ca, I was often asked why I did it and I never had a very good answer until a woman wrote me a letter about her 10-year-old.

The young girl had performed at a Gloucester Music Club recital and I happened to write a story about how talented the kids were.

According to the woman, the story had not only made her daughter’s day, it made her entire year. She had emailed a link of the story to all her relatives and printed off a copy to take to school.

It was then that I realized my mission as a local journalist and columnist has been and always will be to provide positive reinforcement to our youth by writing about their many accomplishments and publishing them online and in the newspaper. Covering the actual news was merely a side.

As I look to the next 30 years, that will never change.

Letter to the editor Former NCC tenant provides important history lesson To the editor: In this matter of high-speed highway routes between Orléans and central Ottawa, both the Ottawa councillors and the NCC may have put the wrong foot forward.

The NCC made an irrational commitment a few years ago (proposed not by the Commissioners or staff but by the SENES consultancy) to “renaturalization” of the Green Belt, i.e., spending no money on maintenance of 19th-century wood lots and generally letting the land slump back into second-growth bush.

NCC planners act as if unaware that the green belt managers of other cities see tennis courts, picnic grounds, market gardens, soccer fields, intensely managed forests and garden allotments as just as “green” as uncontrolled forest or derelict arable fields.

A hint that (with no public announcement) the NCC may have since chucked the “renaturalization” policy, was offered by the admirable farm drainage work done in the fields north of Russell Road in 2018-19. But the NCC has missed the political bus by failing to appeal to general support and current government policy for carbon control.

Whatever rhetoric there may be about Greenbelt forests as a carbon sink, the NCC does not really know its capacity because it has attempted no inventory of its forest holdings since the ice storm of 1998.

For most of the 20th century, the NCC employed no professional foresters but contracted out its needs in this

respect to the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests; but the ODLF hugely reduced its commitment to forestry in the 1990s, and when the NCC contracts expired they were never renewed; and the NCC still (so far as I know) does not employ a single professional forester with current credentials.

There are paradoxes here, so far as the NCC has announced formal programmes to extirpate a dozen exotic plant species: but so far as I know, no botanical inventory has been made since Dan Brunton’s of 20 years ago.

Just now, municipal and provincial authorities combine to make the traffic situation round the Mer Bleue Bog worse than ever before, first by closing some years ago the freeway connection between the Queensway (westbound) and eastbound Hwy. 174. This has driven traffic that wanted to follow that route onto either Anderson or Innes Roads, neither of them ever planned or built for so many heavy vehicles.

Hwy 417 traffic that wants simply to get from one side of the city to the other is offered more expensive lanes downtown, but long distance traffic still has no way of conveniently driving round Ottawa. Long distance trucks must share the road with commuters who want only to disperse in the suburbs or park down town.

This is no doubt why Orléans politicians wanted the LRT extended to Orléans, and now want to build more multilane commuter roads across the northern side of the

Mer Bleue.

No thought has been given (so far as we voters can see) to co-ordinating traffic plans with the provincial road network. This was a task the NCC took up in the 1960s, when railways were important (and the NCC wanted to get railways out of downtown Ottawa) and “parkway” roads were enthusiastically built along the Ottawa River and around Gatineau Park.

The NCC never attempted to integrate its road plans with either municipal or provincial planners and eventually left this field as “too political.” This was the NCC’s decision.

The original legislation establishing the NCC mandated that the organization construct railways (clause 13,1) and even included clause 13.3 that this is not “deemed to constitute the Commission a railway company”, but nothing ever prevented the NCC from extending its general mandate into roads when roads became equally important (cf. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munro_v_National_ Capital_Commission ).

Blais to run for provincial Liberal nomination

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star While Marie-France Lalonde has yet to find out her fate in the upcoming federal election, the race to find her replacement at Queen’s Park has already begun.

Last week, Cumberland Ward Coun. Stephen Blais announced his intention to seek the provincial Liberal nomination in Orléans Ward whenever a by-election is held to fill the seat left vacant when Lalonde won the federal Liberal nomination last month.

The timing of the by-election will be up to the Conservative government which has six months to do so. That means the Ford government must hold a by-election on or before March 23.

According to the Ontario Municipal Act, Blais is not required to relinquish his city council seat until and unless he wins the provincial election. That means he can carry out his city council duties while running an by-election campaign.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Blais laid out his reasons for running.

“As councillor for Cumberland Ward, I have represented one of the fastest-growing suburban communities in Ottawa,” states Blais. “We’ve worked hard to balance the needs of a growing community of young families while maintaining a fiscal approach that ensures costs change predictably.”

“We have accomplished so much together at City Hall, but Orléans needs a strong representative at Queen’s Park,’’ added Blais. “If I am fortunate to earn the trust of

the voters, my track record demonstrates that I will work to ensure we get our fair share of investments to further help build our community.”

While Blais is the first person to declare his candidacy for the provincial Liberal nomination, it is unlikely he will be the last.

That said, he has already received the endorsement of several key people, including Mayor Jim Watson, former Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP Don Boudria, former Orléans city councillor Bob Monette and current Orléans city councillor Matt Luloff.

“We need Stephen in our corner at Queen’s Park to make progress on the issues that matter most to our community, such as reducing commute times, attracting jobs and making life easier for families,” says Luloff. “Stephen knows Orléans and we need him as our partner at the provincial level – we deserve nothing less.”

Blais was a long-time supporter of the Liberal Party before entering politics in 2006 when he beat thenincumbent Des Curley for a seat on the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board.

Three years later, he surprised many pundits when he beat another incumbent, Rob Jellett, in the 2010 municipal election.

Despite garnering just 35 per cent of the vote in the rural portion of Cumberland Ward 19, Blais made up for it by winning the majority of the votes in the suburban portion of the ward which had grown by leaps and bounds in the years previous to the 2010 election. He was then re-elected by a plurality in 2014 (78%) and 2018 (89%).

Stephen Blais Among his many accomplishments as councillor, Blais facilitated an $8 million expansion of the Millennium Sports Park, including an artificial turf field; he played a leading role in getting the east end included in Phase 2 of LRT; and he pushed for the construction of the François Dupuis Recreation Centre in Avalon.

Old rivals square off again in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell ORLÉANS – A pair of old rivals are battling for the House of Commons seat in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell as the federal election draws near. Liberal incumbent Frances Drouin is locked in a heated battle with former Conservative MP Pierre Lemieux who lost to Drouin in the last election by 10,822 votes. This year’s result is expected to be much tighter.

Lemieux was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006 when he succeeded former Liberal MP Don Boudria by just 203 votes. He Frances Drouin Pierre Lemieux was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2011 when he beat his Liberal challenger by more than 10,000 votes. Voters in the riding have no shortage of candidates in which to chose from. Besides the two front runners, the ballot in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell includes NDP candidate Konstantine Malakos, Green Party candidate Marthe Lépine, People’s Party of Canada candidate Jean-Jacques Desgranges, Libertarian candidate Darcy Neal Donnelly, Rhinoceros Party Marc-Antoine Gagnier and Independent candidate Daniel John Fey. Polls will open across the riding at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 21.

Fall Colours races blessed with perfect weather

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Mother Nature was smiling on this year’s Fall Colours Run as more than 650 people took part over various distances from 3K to a full marathon under perfect skies and a light breeze.

The event was kicked off by the annual 1K Wylie Ryan Turkey Trot for children over the age of seven. They were followed by kids six and under, many of whom were accompanied by a parent.

Once the kids were off the course, the marathon and half marathon got underway, followed by the 10K, 5K and 3K. The Fall Colours Marathon is notable because it is one of the earliest qualifying events for the 2021 Boston Marathon.

St.Matt’s make short work of east end rivals

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star What a difference a year makes. At this time last year, the St. Peter Knights senior boys football team had just beaten the St. Matthew Tigers on their way to winning their seventh city championship in the last 13 years.

Jump ahead 12 months to their annual match-up on Oct. 10 and it was payback time for the Tigers as they mercilessly ran up the score against their east end rivals.

The result was a 50-0 drubbing.

But while the result was much different than last year, the game itself was a penaltyand mistake-filled repeat of last year’s horrendous affair – at least in the first half.

Penalties, dropped passes and turnovers on the part of both teams left a pair zeroes on the scoreboard until late in the first half, when the back-to-back unnecessary roughness penalties gave the Tigers excellent field position on the Knights’ five yard line. It took just one play for St. Matt’s running back Gariche Riviere to run the ball in for the touchdown. The major score

was a sign of things to come.

Following the halftime break things quickly went from bad to worse for the Knights, starting with a botched third down play deep in their own end.

Facing a third and long situation on their own 12-yard line, the Knights coaching staff were contemplating giving up a safety to get better field position when they noticed they were missing a player on offence. As they tried to yell at their players to take a time out, the centre snapped the ball to the punter who mishandled it and ended up getting tackled on the five. Two plays later, Nathan Lawler ran it in to put the Tigers up 14-0.

From their the floodgates opened as the Tigers turned four Knight turnovers into 28 points including a pick six by Matthew Michael and a fumble recovery in the end zone by AR Ismail. Riviere scored two more TDs and Alex Vilain caught another from first year quarterback Dylan Craig.

Back up wide receiver Ethan Orser also got into the action as the smallest guy on the team caught a two-point convert to make the final score 50-0.

The Ottawa TFC team is made up of Chanelle Chaput, Riley Bonadie, Lauren Curran, Flavie Dubé, Emily Smith, Paige Robert, Kylen Grant, Kylie Laframboise, Jessica Boyle, Melina Cane, Véronique Bolduc, Joelle Chackal, Amelia Thompson, Devon Vermaire, Rachel Vermaire and Katelyn Brzozowski. 2019 National Champions!

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star The best U17 girls team in Ontario is now the best U17 girls team in the country as the Ottawa TFC Academy team emerged from the recent Toyota National Championships in Charlottetown with the gold medal and the title.

It is the first time that a team from the Ottawa region has ever won gold at the national tournament – boys or girls.

The Ottawa TFC team is made up entirely of Cumberland United Football Club players put together before the season began from last year’s Cumberland Cobras U14, U15 and U16 teams.

TFC kicked the tournament off with a 3-0 win over the host PEI FC on Oct. 19.

Riley Bonadie scored an excellent goal in the 31st minute with a firm shot from

just inside the penalty area that found the top corner. A Katelyn Brzozowski penalty in the 46th minute made the points safe, while Amelia Thompson’s first of the tournament in added time provided the icing on the cake.

TFC then reeled off a pair of wins over Halifax County United (4-0) and Moncton Codiac SC (6-0), before St. John’s SC held them to a 1-1 tie.

Bonadie and Jessica Boyle scored in the opening half against Halifax United and Kylie Laframboise added a pair of goals in the second stanza.

In the match against Moncton, Flavie Dubé scored a hat trick while Emily Smith, Chanelle Chaput and Devon Vermaire added a goal each.

With all of their early success, TFC still needed a win or a tie against St. John’s to

finish at the top of their group and earn a berth in the gold medal game.

In the end a 1-1 tie was good enough to secure the top of the fixture and a date against Québec champions Lakeshore SC in Monday’s final.

With the gold medal and the National Championship on the line, the girls came flying out of the gate and very nearly scored in the third minute of the game when Chaput forced the Lakeshore keeper to make a spectacular save from in close.

Much of the play during the early stages of the first half was in the Québec team’s end as Ottawa TFC dominated the first 20 minutes, applying constant pressure to Lakeshore’s backline.

Lakeshore’s first shot at goal didn’t come until the 15th minute and the first shot on goal didn’t occur until the 17th minute.

It took Ottawa TFC 57 minutes to finally get on the scoreboard and break the 0-0 deadlock. The goal was set up by a long lead pass from Laframboise that took a high bounce in the penalty area, allowing Vermaire to head it over the Lakeshore keeper and into the back of the net.

TFC extended their lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute on a series that began with a blind clearance by Boyle that fell to the feet of a hard-charging Bonadie who sprinted past the defender and slid a crossing pass to Chaput who easily redirected it into the Lakeshore net.

The Québec side managed to cut the deficit in half two minutes into extra time, but Ottawa TFC was able to control the play for the remaining 60 seconds and ran out the clock to claim the gold medals and the title of National Champions.

Mosquito Panthers lose exciting rematch against Kanata ning back Nanakjeet Auluk. A successful two-point convert kick would cut the deficit to 28-22.

Then after back-to-back defensive stands by both teams, the Stallions got the game tying touchdown they needed on a 45-yard run by Auluk. The two-point convert would move the Stallions into the lead for the first time in the half.

The audacious visitors then pulled off an onside kick, which gave them a fresh set of downs at midfield.

Unfazed by the apparent change in momentum, the Panthers’ defence stymied the Stallions on three straight plays leading to a turnover on downs which the offence took full advantage of. Digging into their own bag of tricks, the Panthers ran a reverse to St. Laurent which covered 62 yards for a touchdown and allowed Cumberland to regain the lead 34-30.

It didn’t last for long, however, as the Stallions answered back with yet another Auluk run for a touchdown and Kanata moved back into the lead 38-34 with only 3:43 left in the game.

Unfortunately, the Panthers failed on three attempts to pick up a first down as nearly a minute melted off the clock.

Cumberland’s only hope was to prevent the Stallions from picking up a first down of their own. They held them once, twice and what looked to be a third time, but when the sticks were brought onto the field for a measurement they confirmed that the Stallions had indeed pick up a first down by a foot, and the Panthers hopes of a possible comeback were dashed.

The only good news for local football fans is that the two teams will likely do it all over again in the A-Cup final in three weeks barring any upsets in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

In other action involving Cumberland Panther teams on the weekend, both of the club’s tyke teams won their respective games. The Tykes 1 team beat the North Gloucester Giants 44-34 to end the regular season in second place with a 6-2 record and the Tyke 2 squad beat the Bell Warriors 28-12 to improve to 5-2-1, good enough for sole possession of fourth place in the standings, which means both teams will open the playoffs at Millennium Park.

The Panthers peewee team won by forfeit over the Giants (0-8), who decided to take a pass on a potential drubbing.

The win improved the Cumberland team’s record to 7-1 and second place in the standings thanks to a 44-42 win over the Nepean Eagles earlier in the season.

Last but by no means least, the Panthers bantam squad locked up sole possession of first place and the number one seed in the playoffs thanks to a 45-7 win over LaSalle in Montreal on Saturday.

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star If there were any doubts that the Cumberland Panthers and the Kanata Stallions are the best two mosquito teams in the city, they were emphatically put to rest on Sunday as the two rivals played an epic contest filled with big plays on both sides of the ball.

The Stallions won the first match between the two teams, which took place on the opening weekend of the season, by just two points 27-25. That was nearly two months ago. Since then, both squads have run roughshod over the rest of the league in the lead up to their regular season finale.

The Panthers had reeled off six straight shutouts, averaging more than 46 points per games, while the Stallions gave up just one touchdown in six games and averaged 50 points per game.

With both teams possessing a potent offence, Sunday’s rematch would come down to the defence that would provide the key critical stop.

The game opened as advertised with the Panthers scoring on a 53-yard pass from quarterback Shiloh Mukendy to Isaiah Wallace on just their second play from scrimmage. Mukendy then added the two-point convert to give the home team the early 8-0 lead.

The Panthers defence then forced the Stallions to turn the ball over to set up the longest drive of the game as the Panthers moved the ball 70 yards in 12 plays culminating in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Mukendy to Thomas St. Laurent on a third and 12 play.

A missed two-point convert attempt would leave the score at 14-0.

The Panthers looked to be in total control at that point, but looks can often be deceiving. Following the ensuing kickoff the Stallions showed off their own quick strike offence, scoring on a 49-yard run on their first play from scrimmage. A twopoint convert would cut the deficit to 14-8.

When the Panthers failed to pick a first down on their next series the Stallions struck again, this time on a 49-yard run again on their first play from scrimmage and just like that the game was tied 14-14 with Kanata managing to score two touchdowns despite running just eight plays in the first half.

After the halftime break, the Panthers took just two plays to re-establish the lead on a 50-yard run by Mukendy. A turnover by the Stallions on the ensuing kickoff would set up another TD, this time on a 65-yard run by St. Laurent which increased Cumberland’s lead to 28-14.

Orléans lacrosse player joins pro ranks

By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Ever since he first picked up a lacrosse stick, Orléans native Jake Fox has always dreamed of one day playing the sport he loved professionally.

That dream may soon come true after the former Gloucester Griffin recently signed a pro contract with the New York Riptide of the National Lacrosse L e a g u e (NLL).

Fox was drafted 19th overall in the second round by the Riptide which plays Jake Fox their home games in the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

For the past four years, Fox has pursued his dream playing midfield at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he scored three goals and three assists in 28 games.

During Fox’s four-year stint at Johns Hopkins, the Blue Jays won the Big Ten tournament in 2018. That same year they made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

During the summers Fox played with the Peterborough Lakers Junior A team before he was called up to the Lakers’ senior squad in 2018 and helped them win the Mann Cup. He also helped the Iroquois Nationals win a bronze medal at the FIL World Championships that same year.

The Lakers ended up trading Fox to the Brooklin Redmem prior to the start of the 2019 season where he scored 15 goals and 21 assists in 18 games for the Whitby-based club and caught the attention of several NLL teams including the Riptide. The New York club will start their season on Dec. 7 against the Halifax Thunderbirds.

Fox played his minor lacrosse with the Gloucester Griffins before joining the Ottawa Capitals competitive squad. He also played for the Griffins Jr. B team before he was drafted by the Lakers.
