Former Liberal to seek local Conservative nomination By Fred Sherwin The Orléans Star Former Liberal Party organizer and one time leadership candidate David Bertschi plans to run for the local Conservative nomination for next fall’s federal election. The Orléans lawyer and long time community activist will file his nomination papers to run for the candidacy in Orléans this week. The only other people to so far put their names forward are Gerry Potter and Will Hickey. Should Bertschi get the nod as the Conservative nominee, he would contest the seat occupied by Liberal incumbent Andrew Leslie, the man he was pushed aside for in the run-up to the 2015 General Election. His conversion to the Conservative cause was much easier than most people would think. In fact, he’s returning
to the fold. When the native Montrealer first came to Ottawa to pursue a law career in the late 70s, he was a Bill Davis supporter. It wasn’t until the mid-80s after Davis’ exit that Bertschi began to support the federal Liberal Party thanks to Don Johnston whom he saw as being both fiscally responsible and socially progressive. He also worked for local Liberal candidate Albert Roy in the 1984 General Election. Twenty-seven years later, he ran for the Liberals in the 2011 General Election against Conservative incumbent Royal Galipeau. He lost thanks in large part to a strong showing by the national NDP campaign. However, he still managed to amass the fifth highest voter tally among Liberal candidates in the country.
