The

P O L O S H I RT The exact origin of the polo shirt varies a lot. However, some key time periods seem very well-documented

Everybody is familiar with the Polo shirt - the versatile piece of clothing you can wear for almost any occasion. Whether it is wearing it at job, at a formal get-together or as a casual wear at weekends. Technically it is a T-shaped garment with a knitted collar, short sleeves, buttoned placket, produced in pique fabric, but there is a more interesting story behind the Poloshirt as we know it today.

1800’s The Polo shirt was originally named in honour of the oldest team sport ever, Polo.

The first matches are believed to have been played in Persia over 2.500 years ago. The two teams’ objective was to score most goals, and played on horsebacks, it was an effective way to train the cavalry. In the West, polo was unknown until two British officers saw a polo match in Manipur, India in the 19th century; not long after, the sport was introduced in England.

The Polo players soon began to love playing in the polo shirt we know today.

1950s Global Popularity In the 1950s the polo shirt reached worldwide popularity where it was an essential piece of the casual wardrobe. Especially in the US where it was adopted by the businessmen as their favourite casual piece, when visiting the golf course, going to a restaurant or the diners having milkshakes and burgers.

1990s till today With the growth in the technology, industries arose, and a new and more informal business attire occurred. In offices around the world, the poloshirt became the favorite choice of garment.

As polos are easily branded with company name and logo, the popularity spread to other industries such as hospitality and the service sector that could see the advantage of this. In a marketplace that is becoming more styles conscious than ever before, our range of Nimbus Polo shirts has proven to be a highly supportive asset in fulfilling the demands from our customers.

CORNELL Preppy & Rugged Cornell is a true preppy two thread Polo piqué made from fine combed cotton, added several details to underline the fashionable style associated with authentic rugged piques, and where classic American lifestyle meets Scandinavian Apparel.

The

C O P E N H AG E N POLO CLUB The first and only official polo club in Denmark is owned and operated by a family of polo enthusiasts, determined to share their passion for the sport.

The club is based at a beautiful, private seaside estate just 30 minutes north of Copenhagen. Services include everything from beginner lessons on friendly school horses, to matches and tournaments for experienced players. Copenhagen Polo Club runs all year round, with experienced polo staff, well-trained horses and both indoor and outdoor facilities. The main polo field by the sea is overlooking Ă˜resund with a view to neighboring Sweden. A great place for anyone to experience this majestic horse sport during the summer months, when the club hosts their popular match events.

Sport of Kings Polo is said to be the oldest team sport in the world. Originally developed in Persia to train cavalry units, usually elite troops such as the king’s guard. Sometimes referred to as “hockey on horseback”, polo is a fast-paced, full contact ball sport now played all over the world. Two opposing teams compete by hitting a small ball through the opposing team’s goal with a long mallet. Polo is known for the glamourous summer version of the game played with four players on each team on a very large grass field – but variations of the sport include arena, beach and even snow polo!

Polo Teambuilding Although mastering polo requires many hours in the saddle, anyone can become polo player for a day.

Surprisingly, it only takes a few minutes to get the basics of the riding and the game. How is that possible? The horses used for polo are bred and trained to stay calm in a hectic polo match environment. That means that they must be extremely maneuverable, quiet and easy to ride – even for a complete beginner. Copenhagen Polo Club has turned this little known bi-product of the sport into an increasingly popular activity: Polo Teambuilding.

Copenhageners as well as tourists from all around now enjoy this fun new alternative to traditional teambuilding activities. Be it to spice up the annual company day or add a fun activity to a private party.

During the last couple of seasons, we have had the privilege to design a collection of team wear for Copenhagen Polo Club. A collaboration that has turned out to be more than just co-branding, as our styles have had to withstand everything the sport was throwing at it.

We are very excited about the relationship with Copenhagen Polo Club, both from a professional and per-sonal point of view, as the polo shirt has been a cornerstone in our collection of lighter garments for many years now. The design is represented by the classic white and navy blue colors combined with the familiar burgundy red, known from the Club logo.
