“Between” is the word that indicates what the artist (we) is chiefly interested in, and which he used to describe his thirteen-piece work of art showing in Berlin:“Betweeness. I’m concerned with what happens between things and ideas. I believe the German word is Zwischenraum.

The colour between yellow and red - which is orange - the connection between painting and photography, the tension between the vertical and horizontal, between the individual elements of a series and their totality - these are the formal constellations that Baldessari addresses thematically.

Overview

As a pair we are contrasting. The majority of Ed’s work is collage based, he is very accustom to mixed media and manages to prolifically produce beautifully crafted collages every time. I would class myself as more of an interdisciplinary designer, I wouldn’t say I am particularly interested in just one specific area, however it is interesting working with someone who is so in tune to something I know so little about. But this is where I think exciting things happen, when artists from different areas and expertise come together to collaborate on something new.

Collage is a medium Ed is very familiar with. We see it as something very personal and intimate. We talked about eliminating these private and meticulous aspects from collage, considering whether the results would be as successful and interesting as something that was created in the more traditional manner, we wanted to question the aesthetics and juxtaposition of imagery in the format of collage.

Even in the initial stages of this project we knew we wanted to work with the overlaying of two projector beams. To us it seemed like a versatile way to work, not limiting ourselves to any specific format of imagery, a projector still produces a physical, live outcome as apposed to something flat and digital that remains on screen. We knew what we wanted to work with i.e. equipment, setup and we knew how we wanted to work with it, but not why or what.

We booked into the photography studio a few times in order to do some projection experimentation; initially we agreed to work with YouTube videos, allowing the edges of the two videos to interact in an overlaid space, documenting it with a camera. The choice of video wasn’t really considered; we were choosing something that might interest us, or something that related to other projects we were working on, we were then following the ‘suggested’ links for the next composition. We were trawling the Internet and we soon became overwhelmed with options, the process didn’t really hold any value to us; we wanted something more constrained and meaningful. Although this particular process didn’t quite satisfy our ambitions we still came away with a few interesting outcomes.

We reflected on our previous efforts and decided to repeat the process, however this time we would bring in some imagery that interested us thematically, we were now working with still imagery and overlaying the whole images, rather than partial overlays of video. We used pictures of golf courses and swimming pools scanned in from library books, and images of tower block buildings and body builders from the Internet. Once again we obtained some interesting compositions but we were having too much of an input, we needed to have less control on the content of the project. We were losing sight on the initial idea of working with collage without personal influence; we needed to consider a new route.

After further discussions and meetings we came up with the idea of using photographic slides for our collage imagery. The slides were sourced from the Leeds Metropolitan Slide Library and were all individually scanned in to obtain a digital copy. We chose to use the slides because of their image quality, we knew in the earlier stages how we wanted it all to look. Ed works with found imagery that are often of a beautiful appearance and style, this is an aesthetic we wanted but could not originally justify.

The limitless imagery found online became too much and we became lost within it, selecting random topics as we wished and getting thousands of photographs and videos back. This lack of constraint became an issue that the slide library solved. The slide library was a perfect source of material that provided the constraints the project needed.

Although we wanted to have as little input as possible to the final outcome of the collages, we needed to choose the source of the imagery, and although selecting slide draw ‘752, COLOUR’ from the library was a conscious decision, we chose it because of its vague obscurity. The draw would then dictate the specific subject matter and the quantity of imagery we could use. The slide room is filled with slides of art, architecture and design, so a draw named ‘colour’ seemed fairly broad to us.

Overview

Working with video gave us an automatic time constraint, so changing to static imagery posed a problem. When we were creating the artwork we wanted to document the collages, but we had to think about how we would select the images to collage and how we would have as little control of it as possible. It was then we came across Hollis Frampton’s Palindrome, 1969, a 22-minute silent film that works with ‘the waste at both ends of the rolls of processed film-where chemicals worked on the emulsion through clips used to attach the film to the machine’. The viewer is subject to an intense rapid fire of images that suddenly halt before repeating the same routine.

Although Palindrome held the aesthetic we were interested in, it was a film. We needed something interactive that could be influenced and onwgoing.

Microsoft PowerPoint was a platform we thought we could exploit. We recalled a presentation we were shown in our first year where a tutor displayed their work on a continuous loop that was so fast you could barely register the images. A presentation can be stopped and started again, as well as running on a fast paced, continuous loop, allowing us to create the constant raffle of imagery we wanted. There is also something interesting and ironic to us about using real slides within artificial slideshow software, an awkward contrast between the real and the fabricated.

Two identical batches of 169 archive images whir simultaneously on two individual laptops, changing every 0.1 of a second as part of a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow.

The rapid slideshows are each paused spontaneously by two separate participants to construct a collage, the juxtaposition is captured by camera and the system is repeated. We documented this routine 100 times in order to gather a thorough collection of juxtaposed collages; it needed a limit because it was a continuous process.

Initially we were going to set this system up and create the collages ourselves but we felt we could remove ‘us’ further from this, getting others to construct the artwork, and ultimately most of the content for the publication.

Allowing the laptops to randomly select the images themselves would work but this eliminated the interactive element that we were interested in, this does mean there is an element of control but we have aimed to dilute this as much as possible with the involvement of multiple external participants. We are exploring the idea of what it means to create a collage without personally creating it.

This publication is the documentation of A PowerPoint Juxtaposition and how we got there. Alongside this booklet sits the 100 collages created with our system.

After some discussion we decided we wanted to explore collage further, in a different way, with a different mindset. We came up with the idea of working with collage but without human influence and manipulation. As we worked on this idea we gradually strayed off 39

We also knew we wanted to work with projections, something on a larger scale than usually used for collage, displaying and documenting the whole process through a range of formats. The idea of exhibiting a piece at the degree show was something that appealed to us, something interactive that viewers could get involved with. We were almost working backwards, knowing aesthetically and physically what we wanted.

The project was about us, the artists, having as little compositional power as possible, the less ‘we’ were involved in the project, the more valuable it became and the more it made sense.

We wanted to have little amount of control of the compositions that would feature as the work, but obviously there would have to be constraints. We started talking about the slide room in the library and the tactile quality of the photographic slides and decided these could make up the subject matter for the collages we wanted producing. As well as holding the aesthetic that we originally craved they provide the limitation of quantity and subject matter, dictating the contextual direction of the artwork.

The idea initially came across while discussing the sound and aesthetics of old projectors and how we would’ve liked to use them instead of digital projectors.

The limitless imagery found online became too much and we became lost within it, selecting random topics as we wished and getting thousands of photographs back. This lack of constraint became an issue that the slide library solved. The relatively unused library was a perfect source of material and fitted within the constraints of our process and had a large enough selection of imagery without being too much.

As we were focused mostly on the process itself and having as little input to the finality of the ‘image’ this let us once again step back and decide on a draw without knowing the contents within.

Selecting draw ‘752, COLOUR’ was a conscious decision because of its vague obscurity. Being in a room filled with slides of art, architecture and design, a draw just named ‘colour’ seemed strange to us. This 44

Colour is such a broad statement to place onto a single draw within the arts and looking through the draw the mixture of imagery was again quite strange for a draw named colour.

The imagery itself wasn’t as important as the process to us but having a mixture of imagery varies the subject content and doesn’t distract from the over-riding concept.

March 25th, 2013 2:02am EC yes yes, i’m not going home for easter so i shall be around. i think we should aim to have it alll finished in this two week break so we can print it and bind it in the first week next term yer? im working tuesday and thursday so maybe a wednesday meet?

EC looking cool oli. i especially like the circular type on the first two pages. maybe add that photograph of you with the projections over your face and the camera, maybe in the blue? and possibly one more on the opposing page in b&w?
