YOUTH IN ACTION The start of the school year is the perfect time for students to get involved with Youth in Action (YIA). Youth in Action is a service learning club for high school students. They prepare group projects and individually volunteer in the community. Students can then earn 1/4 credit each year for their service experience. A minimum of 45 service hours and a group project is required to receive credit. Last year, Orono Youth in Action students provided a total of 564 hours of service. Students mentored at SPARKS (an after school program), helped create a new program to make attire accessible for school dances, organized the district-wide We Scare Hunger food drive and assisted with community events including Art in the Park and the Wellness Expo. This program is an excellent opportunity for student growth and community engagement.

Supporting Our Spartans: LiveMore ScreenLess Parent Workshops

Digital Wellbeing for YOU: We will begin with understanding the effects of screens on five dimensions of digital wellbeing - physical, mental, social, emotional and cognitive. We will discuss ways to promote your well-being in each dimension. Interactive activities will give you an opportunity to collaborate with other parents to generate ideas for individual and familybased digital well-being practices. We will conclude with your commitment to yourself for your digital well-being. Attending to Attention in the Age of Screens: Since we don’t pay for many of our apps and pay minimally for our streaming services, we are paying with something more valuable than modern day currency: our time and attention. The tech industry has built technology to take hold of our attention and keep us on our devices. This presentation will increase your awareness about the attention economy, share student voice, insight and data related to persuasive design, and conclude with tips and solutions that young people are using to practice digital well-being. These youth-inspired tips can be used for the whole family! High school students are encouraged to register and attend for a separate teen track. Parenting in an Unknown Frontier: Tips and Tools for the Digital Age: No one has ever done parenting like you. No parent in other generations has parented while their son or daughter had a “slot machine” in their pocket. These are unique and challenging times for today’s parents. We will work together to address habits and practices of screen misuse and overuse. You will hear directly from young people about how they would like adults to guide them through this digital age. You will leave with tactics to address the challenges and resources specifically designed to help live with more balance and intention when it comes to technology. Are all of your friends and neighbors playing pickleball? Never tried but wondering what all the hype is about? Join us for an introductory class to learn all about the equipment, court, scoring and rules. Soon you will understand why pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the U.S.! This sport is a combination of ping-pong, badminton and tennis, yet is much easier to learn than any of those three. We will get you up to speed in no time so you can feel confident to start playing the game with family and friends. Instructor: Paul Murray

Pickleball Skills & Drills - Beginner

If you’ve progressed to the point where you are enjoying the friendly competition of the game, but also would prefer to start beating your opponent, this class is for you. In each session, we will focus on one skill set and then implement it into our games. The sessions will open with a warm-up, a description of the “shot of the day” and then a series of drills to practice that shot. Then we will spend time practicing your new and improved shot in live play! Instructor: Paul Murray

Once you have a grasp of the basics of the game, putting in some practice time to improve your play is key to increasing your comfort level and confidence on the court and perhaps more importantly, your enjoyment of the game. We base our skills and drills class on practicing the essential elements of the game such as the serve, the return, the forehand and backhand, the dink shot and the importance of court positioning and shot selection. In addition to working on stroke technique and footwork, we’ll create real match play situations so it all starts to make sense. You’ll be surprised how quickly you improve and how much fun you’ll have while doing it! Instructor: Paul Murray
