SWEET IN SURFERS
Mark Winterbottom took one of the sweetest of his now 13 career victories on the streets of Surfers Paradise, netting his second winning surfboard trophy. It was made sweeter under the circumstances he was able to do it - Monday - two days before International driver practice - his co-driver Will Power was injured in the IndyCar crash in Las Vegas and subsequently was ruled out. Richard Lyons was flown in at the last minute and quickly adapted to the Orrcon Steel-FPR team. Couple that with the Armor All Gold Coast 600 being an all soft tyre round - by far the biggest weak spot in FPR’s armor during 2011. The team got the weekend started well with both Will Davison and his F1 co-driver, Mika Salo standing on the podium with Winterbottom and Lyons on Saturday. Sunday’s race was a true epic. Winterbottom managed to bear down on and pass Championship leader, Jamie Whincup in one
of the greatest battles seen on the Gold Coast’s streets. For Lyons - he had been a spectator at the event on a number of occasions, so to instantly step on the other side of the fence and become a race winner, particularly under the circumstances, is especially pleasing. “I had to be patient when I closed in on Jamie,” said Winterbottom. “I knew it would be hard to get past him but I’ve got nothing to lose so I was going to go in regardless. “Jamie may be at the front of the championship but he always races hard. It was always going to be a hard battle but we worked hard on improving the set-up of our car over the weekend and that win is important.” “Our main focus now is to win as many races as possible, the overall championship is out of reach but third isn’t far away. There’s six races still to go and we’ll be out to win all six of them – we’ve got nothing to lose.”
HIGH-POWERED GARAGE DWELLERS! The unique format of the Armor All Gold Coast 600 sees the regular V8 Supercars drivers joined by internationals from various forms of World Motorsport. The Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team had one of the strongest line-ups in it’s garage. (From left) Will Davison was joined by former Ferrari Formula 1 steerer, Mika Salo - who raced at the event last year. Salo acquitted himself very well and endeared himself to the fans from first setting foot on the Gold Coast. Super-sub, Richard Lyons (who raced at the Phillip Island and Bathurst enduros with Jonathon Webb) was brought in
at the last minute to replace IndyCar star, Will Power in Mark Winterbottom’s #5 Orrcon Steel FPR car. The third driver to join the Bottle-O car - FPR’s ‘satellite’ machine was Austrian, Christian Klien. Klien formerly partnered Mark Webber at Jaguar and has raced for Red Bull Racing and HRT F1 Team in the past. The Gold Coast was his first taste of V8 Supercars action. The format once again proved a hit with the international drivers and fans, with corporate ticketing selling out, several grandstands selling out and overall, a crowd of over 180,000 turning out across the three days.

The Gold Coast’s infamous chicanes came in for plenty of criticism throughout the weekend due to the penalty system put in place by officials. Either way, one can’t argue that they don’t supply spectacular images!

Sunday’s race victory gave the entire Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing team a huge boost after an - at times - difficult season. To hunt down and pass Jamie Whincup - especially on soft tyres, where Whincup has excelled throughout the year made it all that little bit more pleasing. The well deserved celebrations continued long into the night!

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 is always one of the busiest events of the year for the drivers and teams, but one of the more enjoyable as the Orrcon Steel FPR boys proved through the activities they took on!
