TROPICAL DELIGHT – DOUBLE PODIUM IN TOWNSVILLE The work undertaken by the Orrcon Steel FPR Team has been rewarded with two podiums at Townsville’s Sucrogen 400. Mark Winterbottom set the tone on Saturday by recording his fourth consecutive pole position. Whilst he wasn’t able to convert pole to victory, his fifth placing and team-mate Will Davison’s third was enough to encourage the team to continue the push. Winterbottom’s drive for five consecutive pole positions was dealt a blow when he qualified second quickest for Sunday’s race – however he made a good fist of the event and was able to hold on for third. His two top five results propelled the Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon
driver into fifth placing on the Championship standings. Davison was on-track for a top five finish in Sunday’s race, however a Safety Car triggered every car in the field to make a pitstop and he was caught out when queuing for Winterbottom. Once back on track, he was tagged and spun, coming home in 18th. The pleasing gains for the team were around the soft tyre. Winterbottom was able to have his hold on – particularly on Saturday – which hasn’t been the case this year. It is especially important with Queensland Raceway – the next round of the Championship – being a soft tyre event.
MICHAEL’S RIDE OF A LIFETIME Tully banana farmer, Michael Harney had the ride of his life at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 after winning a competition to ride with Mark Winterbottom in the Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon. Janet entered Michael in the Seven Network’s Hot Lap competition and – as a passionate Ford and Mark Winterbottom supporter, he was chosen as the hot lap winner. Earlier this year, Tropical Cyclone Yasi wiped out the farm and part of their house. “We weren’t there for the storm, we fled when we heard the warnings,” Janet said. “The devastation at home was unbelievable.
We’re still living in the house, a part of it wasn’t damaged, but it wiped out most of our living quarters and office.” The good news is that bananas are re-appearing on the plants and production will be back into full swing soon. “Things seem to be on the up for us. We’ve got bananas coming back and working through the re-building process. “I can’t thank my wife enough for entering me in the competition, we come to the V8s every year and love it. It’s a great event for the region and especially this year, everyone’s coming out to support it.”

The Sucrogen Townsville 400 was a huge event for Orrcon Steel with the eXcellerator Zone back in action, a BBQ with Mark Winterbottom, a charity auction as well as over 150,000 racefans exposed to Orrcon Steel’s brand.

NEXT EVENT: Coates Hire Ipswich 300 – August 19-21 point from anywhere on the circuit. Whilst it is the nominated test track for Queensland based teams, usually the Victorians perform well there. It is also the track where Mark Winterbottom had his first drive of a V8 Supercar.
Heading back to the ‘Paperclip’ – a traditional circuit with soft tyres – should provide another great event for the Orrcon Steel FPR team. Quite often maligned by teams, Queensland Raceway usually produces great racing and spectators get a great vantage
