M.A.D.E. MAGAZINE CLIENT Chambers Publishing revolutionized the fashion publishing industry with high fashion editorials and Avant-garde fashion marketing. At the company’s request, I sought to create a Bespoke travel magazine with a visually distinct style, that showcases local artists, designers, and culture, for the purpose of attracting a wider audience of art, culture, lifestyle, and travel enthusiasts.

SOLUTION I decided to use bold colors and vibrant, color-rich, photography to connect the reader with feelings of excitement and exploration. The subject matter showcased throughout the magazine publication and marketing materials are of real-world locations and artwork – encouraging the reader to “go-see” and explore.

TRADITIONS COFFEE CLIENT For this project, I was tasked with re-designing the logo/branding for Traditions Coffee, an established coffee company seeking to reimagine their branding by combining the flair of American Traditional tattoo with a spirit of quality, energy, and virtue. The owners of Traditions Coffee have worked as tattoo artists throughout their professional careers, so they requested branding that connects the nostalgia of tattoo art, with feelings of originality, style, and individual creativity.

SOLUTION I began by looking for inspiration from popular symbols within American Traditional tattoo art, such as skulls, hearts, and animals. I narrowed my choices to familiar subjects, including a dove, skull, and butterfly, because I wanted the consumer to make a connection between the brand and its roots in American Traditional tattoo. Pencil sketches of each symbol were recreated using different brushes on Illustrator to maintain a hand-drawn appearance – a method synonymous with tattoo art.

TRADITIONS COFFEE PARADISE DELO TASTE NOTES: The Kirigu river provides fresh water for washing, milling and the fermentation of the coffee. This offering is a Kenyan AA grade, of the highest bid coffees in the world. We got notes of red currant, rhubarb pie, blackberry, blood-orange, violet and rose hips permeating. Paradise Delo is multi-faceted, rounded and juicy up front, leading to malic sweetness and cools into a bright wine-like acidity with a long perfume finish.

TRADITIONS COFFEE Mas Morenos TASTE NOTES: Our most popular blend, Bella is a variation of the archetypal Moka-Java pairing, in which a wild and jammy natural from Ethiopia finds balance with more substantive coffees from Sumatra and Peru.

TRADITIONS COFFEE DUROMA TASTE NOTES: Our darkest blend, comprising organic coffees from Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and Sumatra, is downright viscous in the cup. Just like Coltrane’s ability to cascade into high-pitched octaves with maximum control, inflections of stone fruit lighten this coffee while steering clear of any cherry notes. Improvisations of chocolate and cream—in any proportion—shine.

ACTIVIST LEAGUE CLIENT The Activist League is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization whose mission is to support young, rising, high school age women. The organization seeks to promote community involvement, leadership skills, education, and empowerment amongst its members by offering resources and a platform that amplifies their voice as advocates for change.

SOLUTION The solution for this client involved creating a powerful brand identity that identifies with themes of connectivity, networking, and community. The most analogous, real-world example I could think of that symbolizes all of these themes was that of a bee-hive. A bee-hive is a place of furious, interconnected, activity and source of protection – a community where the whole is more powerful than the individual. I hoped to connect viewers of Activist League materials with the feeling of community by incorporating bee-hive patterns and colors into each version of communication and technology applications.

POW! WOW! CLIENT POW! WOW! Hawaii, was founded to promote collaboration between local street artists and the communities that they live in. In 2010, one of Honolulu’s most well-known, and rising industrial neighborhoods was selected to host the first POW! WOW! international street art festival. The festival itself featured several dozen large-scale murals on buildings in a three to four block area. By 2014, POW! WOW! Hawaii had become the largest international street art festival in the world, with over 150 artists on their roster, and events planned in cities around the world.

SOLUTION For this project, I was tasked with producing promotional materials to announce the 7th annual POW! WOW! festival. Event coordinators requested a tri-fold brochure that included short biographies of several of the showcase artists contributing to the event, and information about community art programs supported by their organization. I combined bright, energetic colors, with typography executions that feature the smooth movement of hand-written cursive, in order to mimic the technique used when artists paint murals freehand.

Magic Camera CLIENT The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) curated a photography exhibit titled “Magic Camera”, which documented the cultural and artistic impact of the Polaroid camera. With over 800 photographs, the exhibit included work that spans over five decades.

SOLUTION The scope of this project included designs for official “Magic Camera” city billboards to promote the upcoming museum exhibit, MOMA admission tickets, and stationery products for sale at the MOMA retail store. It was important to the client that all marketing materials incorporate typography solutions consistent with the MOMA brand, but also include retro imagery and style that harkens back to the days when Polaroids were first introduced to the consumer market. To achieve this goal, I mixed bold, modern typeface with simple, playful, retro illustrations.

GOONIES CLIENT Warner Brothers is celebrating the re-release of “The Goonies” - an adventure comedy movie that tells a story of a group of teenage friends who attempt to save their homes from foreclosure by unearthing the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th century pirate. During the adventure, they are chased by a family of criminals, who also want the treasure for themselves.

SOLUTION The objective of this design assignment was to generate excitement for the re-release of the movie while paying homage to the nostalgia of this 1980’s classic. It involved creating a movie poster, web banner, video game cover and website homepage. I began with the idea of combining an image of the main protagonist with an image of the legendary pirate. The idea was to blend the two images together, representing the main characters growing obsession with the pirate and his treasure.

CHARLETTE'S WEB CLIENT The classic children’s novel, “Charlotte’s Web” is the story of the friendship between a livestock pig named Wilbur and a house barn spider named Charlotte. For this assignment, I sought to produce a children’s board book cover that reimagines the illustrations commonly produced for novel book covers. The target audience for this book would be children, ages two to six.

SOLUTION My approach to this project focused on simple geometric shapes and warm, playful colors, to create an inviting, youthful look and feel. The minimalistic approach seeks to communicate the essential information about the main characters of the book using the fewest design elements possible.

PAPER CLIP CLIENT Banana Foundry is an emerging typography foundry seeking to design outside the box, experimental type. For their first release, I created the typeface “Clip”. For this project, the Foundry’s first client requested that I use their typeface in marketing materials, to demonstrate its versatility in different media types.

SOLUTION This playful design, inspired by the standard metal paper clip, challenges traditional type design with square-round curves, long stems, and delicate breaks within the form of each glyph. The narrow shape mimics the simple but elegant form -however, Banana Foundry used Clip for their business card typeface to commemorate their first design.
