A Recital Hall for Atmospheres
10
Location: Manhattan, KS
In Progress
The Recital Hall for atmospheres responds to the current distractions from the site by reconnecting the audience and performer in a submerged linear progression of four distinct parametric atmospheres. The new area for the Recital Hall obtains many distractions and noise that varies from the speedy schedule of a student or faculty at Kansas State University to the busy urban area of Downtown Manhattan being the focus of entertainment and local pride. The intimate relationship of audience and performer is manifested by tearing down the current Thompson Hall and creating a recital hall that is dug into the ground. This evokes an overall authentic experience between audience and performer through the four atmospheres: Initiatory, Contemplative, Collective, and Intellectual. An Intimate atmosphere is experienced and described as holistic, familiar, private, and personal. This unique journey begins with the initiatory atmosphere, cleansing your senses by the texture of the concrete walls being washed by the presence of water pouring down its minerals creating a colorful effect on the concrete walls. The performer is present only through music, evoking a personal parameter for the visitor. Preparing a focused and calm state of mind for the visitors to continue their journey. Following along is the contemplative atmosphere where the physical presence of audience and performer is first present in a social space parameter; small group or one-to-one experiences with audience and performer establish the first impression of what is to come through the collective experience. The atmosphere is prepared and resonant within the audience and performer; the collective atmosphere is experienced through a public space parameter in the five hundred seat auditorium. Becoming the peak moment of shared experiences building up curiosity for the audience to learn and follow the performer and performer feeling a grateful experience of appreciation through a fruitful performance and reaction. Concluding the journey, an intellectual atmosphere is established to reflect the previous experiences leading up to the gratefulness of the performer and the ongoing curiosity of the audience. The reflection is built on a learning environment in a social parameter. The audience can interact with the performer to learn new skills or simply reflect on performances from the event.
Map:
The Recital Hall is an architectural piece that evokes our senses more than what it is, especially our sixth atmospheric sense as an omnidirectional, multi-sensory embodied and emotive encounter with space and place that makes us insiders and participants. We are distant from our everyday realities through the four atmospheres into an intimate reality of performer and audience. That becomes resonant through the site and culture of the community.

Egersund Cultural Center Location: Egersund, Norway
Duration 6 Weeks
The Cultural Center, located in Egersund, Norway, is intended to give back to this historical site with a beautiful culture where this location displays the most beautiful artwork. To remind the locals and inform the visiting of the importance of this site. The site condition manifests itself through a historical architectural tradition of using wood as the primary building material. Approach to the final product consists of 5 systems; Circulation, Private vs. Public, Served vs. Service, Structure, and finally Enclosure. Through this process, a design ultimately relates to its context and meets the goals of urban acupuncture.

Mt.Mitchell Interpretive Center Location: Mount MItchell|Wamego,Kansas
Duration 6 Weeks
Visitors from around the world come to this special place in the heart of America where limestone rock, grasses, and wildflowers merge with a blue prairie sky. Today the tallgrass prairie stands as the world’s best remaining example of a diminished ecosystem that is heavily endangered. The Mount Mitchell Interpretive Center has become a signature building to demonstrate the essential elements of the beautiful prairie but, most importantly, shows how nature survives from its prey or how predators achieve their feast through a simple technique of camouflaging with their surroundings. Combination of material color, Countershading, and form make the Mount Mitchell Interpretive Center a unique experience, where a building can become visible but momentarily camouflages with its surroundings. Form:
Material Combination:
Vertical, Diagonal lines emerging from the ground and elevated several feet cast irregular shadows to distort the monotomy of the overall dimension of the design.
Roofs which are planted with grass, or even with small shrubs can match their surroundings almost entirely, under all weather and light conditions and play well at hand with a combination of a wall material that reflect the scenes of all the surroundings.
CounterShading:
Surrounding with trees giv better concealment and natu irregularity of light and shado Trees play an important part in t design of natural camouflage.
45 Approach to the site
Site Condition:
ves The site is found in a condition ural where the elevational change ow. is very minimal. the
Configuration of site:
Becoming one with the site:
In order to help the camouflage effect and help the form the site has been excavated following the building outline.
With the building outline excavated the builing embeds perfectly within the site to emphasizes the buildings form is emerging from the ground.

Inlightment Art Installation Group Memebers:Matthew Henigsman, Edgar Ortuno
Fall 2021
The story we want to tell is a simple one. Libraries are houses of knowledge and learning. You go to a library to learn something new and be instructed. It is often a process of receiving facts, then departing to use that knowledge elsewhere. The creativity and usage is a separate act. We wish to bring that back into the original context of the building itself. You absorb what you take in from the space, and then creatively utilize and express that knowledge in your own way. Inlightment is a light art piece that tunes into the space creates a new dimension by shifting our perspective of space by utilizing light as a pure material. The natural sunlight moving throughout the day allows opportunities to dynamically change the effect throughout the sunrise and sunset. The reveal of color shifts within the source of light from the opening, demonstrating the natural beauty and forms through each unique Acrylic Piece. Dichroic Film was placed on each unique shape to create astounding forms that reflect all the surfaces it can manipulate. Where the revelation of light itself defines new perspectives onto the space.
