Golden Eagles 01
2012 ORU Men’s Soccer Fact Book Head Coach Steve Hayes In his 15th year at the helm of the Oral Roberts University men’s soccer program, head coach Steve Hayes continues to build The Golden Eagles into a conference championship contender. In 13 seasons, Hayes is 102-124-23 (.456). In 2011, the Golden Eagles took advantage of their third place finish in the Summit League, winning their first contest of the tournament, before falling in the tournament championship at Western Illinios, 2-1. Hayes squad finished the season with a 9-12-1 record overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles have won three regular season conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament once under Hayes. 2010 may have been one of his best coaching jobs in his long tenure, taking his fourth-place team that finished 5-7-6 all the way to the conference championship game, where they just fell short of another NCAA tournament berth, losing to Oakland 2-0. In 2009, the Golden Eagles finished the season 7-8-3, missing the conference tournament for just the second time in eight years. Newcomers Sterling Copeland and Kalen Ryden earned Summit League All-Newcomer team honors, while Sterling Copeland was named to the all-conference second team. in 2008, the Golden Eagles went 6-9-2 overall and narrowly missed the Summit League Championship with a 2-3-1 record. Five Golden Eagles earned all-conference honors, marking the second-most selections in the league. Carlos Pinto was named a first-team selection, while Juan Chang and Jordan Tatum earned second-team honors. Taylor Cluff and Irving Peralta were selected to the all-newcomer team. The high point of the season came when ORU posted a 1-0 overtime upset of No. 30 Oakland at the ORU Soccer Complex. Senior Jordan Tatum fired the winning goal as time expired in the first overtime period to lift the Golden Eagles to victory. In 2007, the Golden Eagles finished with a 3-3 Summit League record and made their fifth consecutive conference tournament appearance under Hayes. The Golden Eagles had seven All-Summit League selections to tie for first in the conference. Brian Beckford, Juan Chang and Miguel Peralta were all named to the first team, while Gary Duran and Andrew Techanchuk received second -team honors. Techanchuk and Vince Tizzone were also named to the all-newcomer team. In 2006, Hayes led the Golden Eagles to a third place finish in Mid-Continent Conference play. With an influx of nine newcomers and injuries to key players throughout the year, Hayes brought together the troops resulting in a 3-3 league mark, earning a birth into the conference Coach Hayes and assistant coach David Bradford go over strategy during a tournament. ORU could not advance to the championship match at the Case Soccer Complex. Golden Eagles 11
2012 ORU Men’s Soccer Fact Book game though as the Golden Eagles ended their season as UMKC advanced in a shootout victory. As the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year, Hayes led the Golden Eagles back into the post-season in 2004, thanks in large part to the play of Mid-Con Offensive Player of Year Dave Leung and stand-out freshman goalkeeper Tony Quartuccio. The Golden Eagles ended the regular-season on a six-game unbeaten streak to capture the regular season conference championship outright. Hayes accepted the head coach position in 1998 after a successful fouryear campaign as the women’s soccer coach. He led that program to winning seasons in 1996 (10-6-1) and 1997 (11-7). Hayes was familiar with the Golden Eagle men’s program before accepting the head coaching position in 1998. From 1992-94, Hayes served as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team under former head coach Doug Techanchuk, who led the men’s team to seven successful seasons. Hayes came to ORU after successful seasons with the Tulsa Ambush of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and the Washington Stars of the American Professional Soccer League (APSL). Hayes’ extensive soccer resume also includes being named 1986 Oklahoma Player of the Year and the first Oklahoma resident to play for the U.S. National team. In addition, Hayes also served as an Oklahoma Olympic Development Staff Coach. A local product, Hayes graduated from Tulsa’s Memorial High before playing collegiate at nationally ranked George Mason University. At GMU, Hayes excelled as a four-year starter for the Patriots. His honors include being a three-time participant in the NCAA Tournament and a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection. Hayes also enjoyed a position as an alternate for the U.S. Youth World Cup team. Other honors include, being named a member of the Umbro U.S. Select Team in Europe, a four-year member on the Region III Team as well as a member of the Oklahoma Development Team. Hayes earned a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1988 from George Mason and is married to the former Amy Hooks. Hayes and his wife are the proud parents of two sons, Matthew (9) and Nathan (7), and a daughter, Anna (4). Golden Eagles 12

2012 ORU Men’s Soccer Fact Book Assistant Coach Will Ribera
Assistant Coach Mickey Miller
Assistant Coach David Bradford
The 2012-13 season will be the second for Will Ribera as a fulltime member of the staff of his former coach Steve Hayes. Before the ORU coaching position, Ribera was Assistant Director of Coaching for a local youth academy and he has been involved in local youth academy teams for the past three years. Ribera earned his coaching certification licences D and C on the USSF National Level.
Mickey Miller joined the ORU men’s soccer program as a graduate assistant prior to the 2011 season. Miller came to ORU from Booker T. Washington, where he was the head coach, taking over a team that hadn’t made the playoffs in three years. In just his second year, the team won the state championship. He was named the All-State Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
David Bradford serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Golden Eagles after a very successful playing career.
Ribera played three years for ORU after transferring from MidContinent University in Kentucky, where he won the 2005 NCCAA National Championship, earning all-conference honors. He also played as a part of the U-16, U-17 and U-20 Bolivian National teams. The son of Will A. Ribera and Gaby Pedriel, Ribera is maried to the former Julia Wilson, who was a jumper for the ORU track team from 2006-10. He is currently working on his Master’s of Business Administration at ORU, with a concentration in management.
Miller played collegiately at Valparaiso University, where the Crusaders knocked off nationallyranked teams in Bradley and Oregon State. As a prep player, Miller participated on the Region III ODP team with Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark, and was coached by Gary Williamson. An alumnus of Tulsa Thunder 83, Miller helped the team win the club’s first state championship. He earned his bachelor of business administration degree from Valparaiso in 2005 and has been teaching economics and history at Booker T. Washington for the past five years. Golden Eagles 13
Beginning at 15 years old, Bradford joined the Blackburn Rovers and was moved up to the first team at 18. He also played for Coventry City in England and spent time in the North American Soccer League and the MISL. He played for a number of different teams, including the Tulsa Rougnecks before retiring. His playing career may have ended but he has continued to be involved with the sport, coaching at the Tulsa Soccer Academy.
