Talk It’s only a matter of time before we’ll be in full swing of summer, wearing all the gorgeous pieces the season brings. On that note, we got in touch with some local fashion buyers for an inside knowledge on what to be seen in. Our Trend Train column also whizzes around the collections to unveil how important colour is in influencing what we wear. March proved to be a hectic month on the social calendar, and GLAM was out and about to bring you all the action. Firstly, we rubbed shoulders with VIPs at the prestigious horse race held at the Qatar Equestrian Club, where excitement reached fever pitch thanks to the impressive fashion off the field. We also attended the uber glitzy Amina Gallery opening which proved to be a great success; and cheered along all the beauty school graduates at the Tajmeel Graduation; congrats girls! The fashion team took a dive under the sea for theme inspiration, and journeyed to the newly open St. Regis Doha to be the first magazine to conduct a fashion editorial there. We also visited the Kempinski to create catwalk beauty looks you should be following. Many thanks to both hotels for hosting us and especially for the delicious lunches we dined on. There’s so many more exciting things revealed inside, so please read on for more! See you next month!

Hello Glam, I was glad to learn about the new reality show that will be broadcasted live from Doha. Doha is definitely turning into the region’s hottest fashion capital, so it only makes perfect sense for a programme like MENA’s Next Top Designer to be filmed in the city. To top that, there’s The Pearl-Qatar fashion week. Ladies, we are in for a treat! Lubna Ahmed

Hey Glam, I am writing in to tell how much I adore your magazine. It’s a must-read for every fashionista in the country. I love your fashion shoots, your interviews with famous designers, tips and advices on styling and beauty, and featuring budding new designers as well. Qatar has a lot of fresh young talent, and GLAM is doing a terrific job of encouraging such talents. Maria Leyman

Hi, Thank you GLAM for a lovely issue every month. All the articles make for a very interesting read. I especially enjoy reading the tips on beauty and health and fitness. However, I would like to request you to also include tips on hair care and styling. The majority of the women in Qatar face hair damage. It would be great to get expert advice on how to be creative with hair of all lengths. Sheena Rodriguez

Update your wardrobe for Spring/Summer 2012 in four simple steps

Getting ready for Spring/ Summer 2012 needn’t involve a complete wardrobe overhaul, so here are four simple steps on what to buy, what to ditch and what to keep for the coming months.

Era to embody: 1920s Already one of the most talked about films of 2012 despite not being scheduled for release until December, fashionistas will be getting in the mood for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby during the spring and summer months. Gucci led the way at its Spring/Summer 2012 show with geometric print flapper dresses, while the Jazz Age was a key influence at the Etro show. Ralph Lauren was also enamored with the flapper style, with fringed skirts, elaborate beading on dresses, and cloche hats dominating its Spring/Summer 2012 presentation.

GLAM Item to keep from Fall/Winter 11/12: anything leather One of the biggest revelations to emerge from the Spring/ Summer 2012 shows was that leather is no longer the reserve of the winter months – with labels including Hermhs, Ciline, Balmain and Margiela all championing the material in its various forms. Winter’s leather shorts minus tights and teamed with a sheer blouse makes for an on-trend Spring/Summer 2012 look a la 3.1 Phillip Lim. However, if you do want to invest in something new in the material, lighter tones and minimalist cuts provide a far less wintery aesthetic – Topshop has a variety of neon colored leather jackets for Spring/Summer 2012.

NEWS BUZZ

Item to revive from Spring/Summer 2011: the pleated skirt The influence of ballet thriller Black Swan on the fashion world for Spring/ Summer 2011 saw an array of balletic silhouettes dominating the catwalk, and fashionistas who invested in the ubiquitous pleated skirt will be glad to know it’s back for another season. This style ruled the runways at Spring/ Summer 2012 shows including Chloe, Etro and Erdem, and can be easily updated for the coming months. For example, combining with a crop top (big news at Spring/Summer 2012 presentations including Versace/D&G and Alexander Wang) will offer an edgier take on the style. Meanwhile, high street retailers including H&M have their own take on the trend, with pleated pencil skirts among the highlights for the coming months.

Motif to embrace: floral There are certain motifs we know will re-emerge season after season (nautical, lace, floral), and for Spring/Summer 2012 flowers are particularly prevalent. Colourful bloom prints were all over the catwalk, ranging from the iridescent creations adorned with multicolored blooms at Christopher Kane to the broderie anglaise Louis Vuitton frock sported by Lana Del Rey on the cover of UK Vogue’s March issue. Floral pieces from the Vuitton collection have also been seen on covers including British Elle (by Alexa Chung) to Vogue Japan (by Kate Moss). For the coming months, Paul Smith is offering cropped floral blazers, Diane von Furstenberg leaf-print pants, while 7 For All Mankind is offering floral print denim and Uniqlo has teamed up with English fashion and lifestyle brand Laura Ashley for a Spring 2012 collection comprising floral prints, T-shirts, stoles, and tunics.

Alexander McQueen latest label to get website revamp, expand e-commerce Rihanna

After Armani team-up, Rihanna on track to be next ‘serious’ celebturned-designer

Following the success of her team-up with Armani, Rihanna has revealed she is working with designers she “respects” to come up with her first signature fashion collection. Gone are the days when celebrities simply attached their name to a clothing line, as the pop star looks set to follow the model of hip-hop artist Kanye West – who famously interned at Fendi in 2010 and has shown his women’s ready-to-wear line during Paris Fashion Week for the past two seasons. While speaking to US radio host Ryan Seacrest, Rihanna spoke of her design ambitions, although the singer kept her cards close to her chest. “I want to design. This is also a road that I want to earn it. So I’m working with designers. Designers that I respect, and [fashion] companies that I respect. I want people to really trust me before I just say ‘Buy it because it’s mine,’” she said. Last year the songstress launched a limited edition line of clothing and lingerie with Armani, and she is the face of Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani Underwear. The singer should also gain some inspiration with her upcoming fashion television project for UK channel Sky Living HD. The star will executive-produce and appear on a currently unnamed series where unknown designers will compete for the chance to dress her when she performs at London’s Wireless Festival in July.

28 / APRIL 2012

Alexander McQueen is the latest label to revamp its website, with increased e-commerce outlets and features including a “My McQueen” area where users can access archive McQueen images and curate their own pages. Before, the British label only offered e-commerce for the US and UK although it is now available for 30 countries including France, Italy and Norway. There is also a separate scarf boutique and the diffusion line McQ has its own micro-site accessible via the homepage. In terms of digital innovations, the new site includes a host of runway videos and images, and with echoes of online pin board Pinterest, users are able to select from thousands of McQueen archive images to curate their own pages. They can also share these via social media. This follows increasing attempts by fashion brands to offer shoppers a place to experience a label rather than just making purchases – Valentino even launched its own virtual museum last year. Meanwhile, following the launch of his Karl line at Net-a-Porter back in January, Karl Lagerfeld recently unveiled a new website karl.com, which features an online store as well as a “World of Karl” area, where users can learn about the creator’s favorite quotes as well as watching behind-the-scenes videos and interviews.

Revealed: Charlotte Casiraghi for Gucci campaign

Italian fashion house Gucci has presented the first images of its “Forever Now” campaign featuring Princess of Monaco Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Caroline of Monaco. A young show jumper, Charlotte Casiraghi was photographed in an equestrian setting. The princess models items featuring the brand’s signature red and green stripes in a campaign celebrating its heritage. Charlotte Casiraghi has been called a natural choice for the brand since she has attended several editions of the Gucci Masters – including the last edition (December 3-5, 2011) where she competed in the International Jumping Competition.

Venus Williams re-launching fashion line, planning Grand-Slam themed ranges

Venus Williams is relaunching her EleVen by Venus Williams clothing line designed for on and off court, with a range inspired by the French Open, Wimbledon, Summer Olympics and US Open. The tennis star originally launched EleVen for US store Steve & Barry’s, although the chain went into liquidation in 2008. She has since partnered with brands including Ralph Lauren and Gilt Group, and the relaunch of EleVen is set to feature items such as a tournament dress, classic flutter skirt and tank tops for women and polos and V-necks for men. Distribution will be aimed at specialty and department stores. The sportswoman will bring her personality to the range, with some styles having messages handwritten from Williams such as “Bring It,” and “Oh & Oh, Beat ‘Em”. Venus’s sister Serena has a long-term sponsorship deal with Nike, and earlier this year collaborated with the sports giant on a capsule collection in honor of the 36th anniversary of Black History Month. Venus hopes to see other tennis players wearing the range on court though. “That would be amazing. That’s definitely our goal going forward. Our next step is to show other players wearing it,” she told WWD. http://elevenbyvenus.com/

ecessionista-fever is finally completely out of the window. It has been four years since the world economy suffered a blow and while the fashion industry commemorated with somber and subtle tones and clean silhouettes for a few seasons, it had never really shaken off the cautious vibe of another possible downturn. This season, however, the spring is back in our step as we bounce into very merry, colourful collections. Spring/Summer 2012 cannot be any more festive and celebratory with the return of every paradise. It is perhaps, the first time in a while that neon pop-ups go hand-in-hand with feminine neutral shades. points for building your new season’s wardrobe. Wear with clashing colour blocks to bring out the diva in you, or layer with neutral shades or the trusty black and white to bring a subtle glam to your look. Over at Prada and Chloe, it is an all pastel affair with dreamy drainpipe pants paired with flowing easy blouses and soft jackets. And if you are big fan of fussfree comfort-focused drapes, the new age pyjama contour from Richard Chai and Betsey Johnson is the perfect fit for you. Complementing the array of colour palette for this season are graphics and prints in equally vibrant motifs, from the classic symmetrical shapes on Caroline Herrera’s blouses and scarves to the sporty lines of Lacoste. If you have always been a little skeptical about the colour white, this season is the chance for you to jump on the bandwagon and explore this understated yet versatile shade. Get ready to hit the beach with an all-white ensemble, be it a classic bikini or a plunging neckline swimsuit from Aqua Di Lara, finished off with a stunning white kaftan with trimmings from Roberto Cavalli. The staple white dress for the season should be of a relaxed silhouette, easily paired with scarves and glittering accessories. Doo.Ri presented a luscious and soft white shirt dress while the very chic Olsen twins at The Row puts together all white ensembles of floaty see-through fabrics. Give your hobos and totes a rest this season as we welcome the new era of large clutches, shoulder bags, fold overs, and wrist-lets that are both chic and functional. Incorporating the season’s graphic and floral prints on to the clutches, brands including Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier sent oversized clutches down the runway with leather or chain straps. Perfect with the extra straps during the day to keep your hands free and detach it for the evening when you need a more dressy ensemble. Keep your wrist-lets small and decorative to serve as the statement piece of your outfits.

Jean Nakhle Senior Buyer, United Fashion Company What are the hottest trends for Spring Summer 2012? SS 2012 is fun and very feminine. The pre-collections introduced pastel colours and light fabrics that expressed femininity at its best. The major influences overall were the 20’s and the 50’s and somehow a bit Charleston. The runway collection was full of exposed midriffs and cropped dresses splashed with bright colours and prints. The urban jungle print along with the floral were amongst the most obvious. And the colours? Celebrate the arrival of Spring in pastels, but make sure you spice up the summer in strong bold printed colors to complement your tan. When it comes to the print, go for Floral and Urban African print. They come in all colors, Yellow, Pink, Turquoise, Red and more. White is a must this summer, as it was featured almost on all runways. Do you have any favourite pieces from the brands? My personal favourites vary from one brand to another. In Ferragamo, for instance, we will be presenting an exclusive exotic line made out of crocodile leather, but the twist is the colour! Bright Fuchsia, Turquoise, and more, they are absolutely stunning. The season’s must-have? A retro square purse or clutch and a printed dress or top. Your style advice to update the wardrobe for Spring Summer 2012. Never go overboard, always look for the key items that can complement your wardrobe and reflect the trend of the season. Lucky for Lively and her mum, a three year restraining order was paced on the crazed fan by a Los Angeles judge in early March. Phew! LA born Blake has entertainment in her bones. Hailing from a family of actors it’s hard to escape the glare of the spotlight, and attending acting classes with her parents is where she became involved in the industry.

Aside from the success of Gossip Girl, Blake has played a variety of ro§les that would be challenging for the most seasoned actors. It’s been given a high-gloss finish, which can be deceiving. Another misconception comes with reference to Koskin, artificial leather often used for computer cases. Wild Lime

And a colour which is clandestinely sticking out as the new color for S/S 2012: Wild Lime/ Margarita, a piquant yellow-green, lifting our spirits with a refreshing and stimulating glow. Oscar de la Renta RTW 2012 epitomises the oscar de la renta

season ahead with this exuberance and refreshing optimism, with cocktail frocks and sleeveless tops fronded in lime ostrich over citrus.

Colour me Blind

It would be foolish to mistake the importance of colour in fashion or even in our lives, who can forget the scene in The Devil Wears Prada, where the aspiring and unassuming Andrea Sachs in all her earnestness stands in the editors office of Vogue, in a bright blue jersey and subtly sniggers at the ongoing colour discussion. With catlike speed of only a passioned fashion woman, Meryl Streep sizes her up in her lumpy blue sweater and explains that that it isn’t just blue or turquoise or lapis, but cerulean, introduced by Paris designer Oscar de la Renta in 2002. From the catwalk, Cerulean Blue attracted the attention of several other designers and eventually found its way to mass retailers. “It’s sort of comical how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry,” Priestly concludes, “when in fact; you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room.” And it is this colour dictate that controls every facet of our lives; where industries from pharmaceutical to automobile understand the importance of colour in channeling an idea via imagery to excite, inspire and stimulate. Whatever colour you channel this season, have fun with it!

Vintage Shopping Yousra Samir reviews the best vintage shops around the region

intage shopping is still a relatively new concept in this region; however in the past five years, a number of vintage stores and online vintage boutiques have started popping up and since taken the region by storm. In the past, those of us who were interested in wearing designer classics were restricted to pieces from the 70s and 80s we found while rummaging through the wardrobes of our mothers, aunts and grandmothers. With the growing number of vintage business-minded individuals, many of whom are young women, who have travelled the world to source vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery and accessories, and who have learnt the art, history and trade of all things vintage, our female relatives no longer need to worry about losing the contents of their wardrobes. Read on to find out about the best vintage boutiques this region has to offer.

Nestled in the second floor of Doha’s Retail Link Renaissance Hotel is Qatar’s very first vintage boutique, aptly named Vintage Boutique. The boutique, which opened in late 2011, sells vintage designer clothing, bags and accessories from multiple eras, from coveted designers like Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Most of the vintage clothes sold here come from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘80s, while when it comes to bags, you will find a rare and unique collection of vintage Chanel bags that date as far back as the 1940s. A lot of research goes into the history of each item, sourced from private collectors around the world. In the majority of cases, only one of each item actually exists. Let the sun shine

Did you know that harmful UVA rays can affect your skin even when you are indoors?

W

hen it comes to staying safe from the sun’s rays, knowledge is power. Know the facts about how to protect your skin and you’ll be less likely to face wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer. Good sun protection isn’t just about avoiding direct sunlight

or hot summer sun. Up to 80 percent of ultraviolet rays can pass through clouds or is reflected off sand. Just because you’re indoors, doesn’t mean the sun can’t find you - window glass blocks the UVB light that causes painful sunburn, but cell-damaging UVA rays still penetrate. The bottom line: Sunscreen is a must, indoors or out, year-round, every day. UVA rays damage the skin on a deeper layer and cause the skin to age by damaging the DNA of skin cells which results in wrinkles and age spots, also known as photo-aging. UVA is the dominant tanning ray and can contribute to or even initiate the development of cancerous cells. UVB, the main cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin’s more superficial outer layers. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and a contributory role in tanning and photo-aging.

Skin care Tips Choose a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 (some dermatologists recommend 30 or higher) When shopping, opt for products that specifically say “broadspectrum UV coverage” on the label, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Check the expiry date. Sunscreens are required to remain effective for at least three years, that’s how long you can expect yours to work at full strength. However, when in doubt, toss it out. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside, and be diligent about re-applying every two hours and always after swimming or “sweaty” activities. Use a shot glass as your guide - it takes a full ounce of sunscreen to adequately cover the exposed areas of your whole body. Don’t forget your neck, ears, nose, hands, and toes, as well as the backs of your arms and legs. Love your lips by protecting them a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher. Limit your time in the sun, especially during the middle of the day (between 12pm and 3pm), when the sun is at its strongest. Remember that water and sand reflect the sun’s rays and increase your risk of sunburn so take extra care at the beach or the pool. Dress to limit sun exposure, wear sun-protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses as an added layer of defense. Keep in mind that the sun’s rays can penetrate light-coloured and thin fabrics, so opt for darker-hued, tightly woven fabrics. 86 / APRIL 2012

Hair Care

BEAUTY

The popularity of sunbathing cosmetics is getting higher and higher. This means that we have become much more aware of the negative results of sunbathing for our skin, but what about the effect of UV rays on our hair?

A

s a result of sunbathing, hair becomes discoloured, dry, fragile and brittle. In fact, hair damage caused by UV rays is irreversible. UV rays tear some of the protein bonds inside hair, this results in the weakening of the hair structure and, as a further consequence, your hair will lose moisture and become dehydrated. A small amount of radiation has

no big effect on healthy hair, especially dark hair, but hair which has already been damaged by other factors (such as colouring or heat styling) is much more susceptible to further damage. The expansion of the solar cosmetics market proves that we have become much more aware of the need to protect our skin before, during and after sunbathing. Hair protection is equally as important. You should use a suitable hair treatment cream that will not only add moisture but will also protect your hair at the same time. Look for ones that contain proteins, protective oils and an SPF and try to use a waterproof product if you will be swimming.

BEAUTY Buzz Celebrity make-up artist James Vincent: social media is changing beauty James Vincent, who has worked with stars ranging from Lady Gaga to Liv Tyler, speaks to Relaxnews about the impact of social media on trend forecasting and which countries are exciting to him in terms of beauty innovations.

From ‘The Voice’ to The Scent: Maroon 5’s Levine launching men’s and women’s fragrances While fans eagerly await debut perfume releases from Lady Gaga and Madonna, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine is the latest pop star to announce a fragrance launch. Levine, who is also a mentor on US reality talent show The Voice, will unveil his debut scent, 222 by Adam Levine, in May 2013, with varieties available for both men and women. According to a release, the scent will reflect his “personality and style,” although details on the juice are yet to be divulged. Levine is working with ID Perfumes on the scent, a division of Adrenalina Inc., which developed Katy Perry’s debut perfume Purr by Katy Perry and also handles Selena Gomez’s fragrance license. The men’s and women’s scents are expected to be sold in department and specialty stores in the US, with expansion anticipated in destinations including South America, Europe and the Middle East. Levine’s fellow The Voice coach Christina Aguilera already boasts a perfume empire, with scents including Secret Potion and Royal Desire. Could co-mentors Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton be the next musicians to venture into the realm? Shelton’s wife Miranda Lambert has previously expressed her interest in a signature scent, so perhaps a husband and wife team up like Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s Soul2Soul could happen in the future. 92 / APRIL 2012

Which factors are having the biggest impact on beauty trends right now? JV: Runway, red carpet and a 24 hour news cycle have changed the way we look at make-up and trend. Social media has managed to make it possible to see a trend in colour, cut or application more easily than the past so trend forecasting has changed. In the past we knew two years ahead where designers were going but now with one award show or magazine cover a celebrity can excite the public and push a demand for new colours or textures immediately. Have you noticed an increase in layman beauty techniques due to the rise in YouTube beauty tutorials? JV: Yes. I think we have to be cautious as Youtube is increasing knowledge and skill level but as there is no accountability for the accuracy of information many YouTube phenomenons have a credibility or celebrity without the proper knowledge or understanding and are giving opinion as fact without having any accountability for the misinformation they provide. Which countries do you consider to be the most exciting in terms of rising cosmetic brands? JV: I think France and Italy continue to lead the pack in prestige but the US has managed to manufacture product that the public connects with. Upstarts in Poland and Canada are also making a mark and the UK and Asian markets like Japan and Korea are working to make their brands more high end. Which five retail brands do you think give the most professional look and why? JV: I think every brand has something for the PRO Market but some of our biggest supporters for PRO business are Make Up For Ever, Temptu Pro, Crown Brush, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and Smashbox. All of these brands have product that is exciting for every artist and have programs set up to support the artist community and their celebrity or fashion clients.

Nars announces Andy Warholinspired colour cosmetics line Nars Cosmetics is taking the trend for artist collaborations to another level with the launch of an Andy Warhol-themed makeup line. The brand has previously dedicated a makeup collection to fashion muse Daphne Guinness – who was a friend of the late artist – and the upcoming line is said to be their largest collaboration to date. The collection, which has been created by the brand’s founder Frangois Nars under a license with The Andy Warhol Foundation, will be launched in the US this October and globally one month later. According to WWD the limited edition collection will evoke the “cool, image-rich, character-laden world of Warhol,” while beauty fans can expect novel packaging, formulas and colors from the line. For a long time, beauty brands have been teaming up with contemporary artists, with recent examples including a limited edition nail and polish line for Dior by abstract artist Anselm Reyle and MAC’s collaboration with Chinese photographer Chen Man. Meanwhile, one of Warhol’s greatest celebrity muses Marilyn Monroe is the source of inspiration for an upcoming beauty line for MAC Cosmetics set for release this October.

No makeup, no way: 70% of UK women wouldn’t go to work without full makeup

Courtesy afprelaxnews.com

94 / APRIL 2012

A new survey has revealed 70 percent of UK women wouldn’t feel confident going to work without a full face of makeup, with problem skin, fatigue and paleness among the main concerns. The poll of 3,000 women, commissioned by UK health and beauty fair the Vitality Show, found that although more than half of the women asked would be happy for friends, family or their partner to see them bare-faced, going makeup free to work was far more daunting. UK women aren’t alone in their dependability on cosmetics, with a similar reliance recently being noted on the other side of the Atlantic. Findings released last month by American non-profit organisation the Renfrew Center Foundation revealed that out of 1,292 women surveyed, 44 percent felt negative about themselves when not wearing makeup. For the UK, main reasons given for needing makeup ahead of the work day were spots and dark circles (64 percent of women), a desire to even skin tone (44 percent) and wanting to give the skin more color (39 percent). However, Sarah-Jane Froom, makeup artist from mineral makeup company bareMinerals, warns there is a danger in being heavily made up.

Your Vision for Success e move through the activities of our busy days rushing from one urgent or important task to another. Days can turn to weeks, months and even years of our lives and can be filled with a vague sense of purpose or overwhelming sense of responsibility. This state of busy-ness can often distract us from the bigger picture of what we truly want from our lives and we end up living our lives by default. We may be making choices that are not taking us in the direction of what will truly be our own personal definition of success, and create lasting satisfaction. How would your life be different if you had a very clear purpose, a meaningful vision of what you want your life to be about? How would your life be different if you consciously created it? Creating and using a vision board is one tool that can help you to be more consciously active in the creation of your own life. A vision board is a tool that will help you define what is important to you, make choices that are in line with a bigger picture of your life and motivate you to move towards your goals.

A thrilling affair, the event consisted of the Emir Sword, a 2400 mt race that carries a prize money of QR1 million and the H.H. the Emir’s Trophy presented by Longines with a prize money of QR800,000. The winner of the 2400 mt race for thoroughbreds is the horse Lancelot, owned by Umm Qarn, trained by Alban de Mieulle and ridden by French jockey Olivier Peslier. Longines’ passionate involvement in the arena of equestrian sports is further enriched with the line-up of events taking place at QREC. Longines and QREC embarked on a strong partnership that sees the Swiss watchmaker being the official timekeeper for all equestrian events occurring at the club as well as the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Tajmeel holds inaugural graduation ceremony

A

glittering evening at the Qatar National Convention Centre marked the inaugural graduation event of Tajmeel: Qatar International Beauty Academy, celebrating a new era for Qatar’s beauty industry. The event was attended by HE Munira bint Nasser Al-Missned, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at the Social Development Center (SDC) and Amal Al-Mannai, Executive Director of the SDC who awarded the

students with their certificates. During the event, entitled ‘The Future of Beauty’, the graduates presented a catwalk show that gave fascinating insights into the various ages of beauty: the Egyptians; Ancient China; the Romans; The French Revolution; and the glamorous Hollywood of the 1950s. The show ended with a final take on the ‘future of beauty’ as students strutted the runway with whimsical hairdos and makeup. Special guest at the event was celebrated Lebanese hairdresser Tony ElMendelek, official hairdresser of Star Academy who demonstrated his skills to the talented graduates. An excited Beverly Crowther, Principal of Qatar International Beauty Academy, said “This is a very special night and marks an important milestone on the Tajmeel journey. I wish to take this opportunity to personally thank the SDC for their support and vision. Tajmeel looks forward to providing world class training in the years ahead and leading the way in reaching new levels of excellence in the beauty industry in Qatar.” Since its inception in 2009 by the SDC, a member of Qatar Foundation, Tajmeel has grown to become the only institute in Qatar to have attained the three reputable qualifications in the hair and beauty industry. The academy was also recently approved to work towards the world famous CIDESCO accreditation. APRIL 2012 / 103

Work may be piling up because you are busy concentrating on stuff that doesn’t need much focus. But the good news is that this the time when you can work towards increasing your income. Ideas may be best left in the incubation stage. So move forward, accordingly!

This month brings plenty of opportunities to express your creativity at the workplace, which in turn may mean more recognition and possibly a pay raise. But that does not mean that you go over the budget. Plan your finances prudently. Money-making ideas abound but they may need refinement before they can be set into motion.

Watch where your money is going otherwise there will be nothing for the proverbial rainy day! Be cautious when it comes to mixing personal and professional arenas as misunderstandings may make life miserable this month. Home and family matters assume top priority and it’s a period for strengthening bonds.

Taurus There are a number of opportunities coming your way – social events, travel opportunities and special announcements. But there might be some friction with those who are very close to you. In such situations, remember to keep your ego aside and say ‘sorry’ if it’s necessary. Taking some time off in the last week will help put things into perspective.

Capricorn Virgo Slow down! Life’s not going anywhere and it’s okay to take a breather. Working long hours without adequate rest may bring those health problems back to the fore. Tame your impulsiveness and aim to work at things you do best rather than taking on what you cannot handle.

Your social life gets rocking in April, so go ahead and enjoy the attention you rightly deserve. Others are finally seeing your value and so admirers are many. Friends can be especially supportive and you’ll only be too happy to return favours. But don’t let all these keep you away from your focus on work and that big promotion coming up!

Libra Gemini You may be confused at where you are headed, but creativity will be your guide throughout this month. Make your true intentions known to avoid misunderstandings. While communication may be key at the workplace, watch your words as misunderstandings may occur when you least expect them to.

A strange restlessness can throw you off track many times this month. But don’t let that worry you. You are still your hard-working and honest self, so just wait for the trifles to vanish. And they certainly will! Your family is your strength and they will certainly be with you during your trying times. The good news for this month is that some unexpected windfall may come your way.

Cancer It’s time for old friendships to strengthen and new ones to blossom. Start by valuing each friendship more for you never know when you need them. The last week of this month brings a burst of new and excitable energy to your career. It’s time to create a buzz!

110 / APRIL 2012

Aquarius You have worked really hard over the past three months and it’s time to reap the rewards. Plan a quick getaway with family and get rejuvenated, in body, mind and spirit. Also don’t hesitate to spend your hardearned money, as it will be worth the while as you see the happiness on the faces of your dear ones!

Pisces Scorpio April brings with it some mix-ups and slowdowns at work. Stay flexible and allow for last minute changes of plans and schedules. It’s also time for reunions... social networking would mean catching up with a lot of old friends offline. Make the best use of it!

Your increased confidence levels will tide over the challenges although close partnerships require considerate attention and care. While unique and creative ideas are wonderful, what you require in large doses are patience and the strength to see them through. All the best.
