G Talk AST NOVEMBER, WE WERE ALL PASSIONATELY PAVING THE WAY FOR A REDESIGNED, REIMAGINED GLAM. ONE YEAR, 10 ISSUES, RAVING FEEDBACKS AND SOME HEARTENING COMMENTS LATER, WE ARE MARCHING STALWARTLY TOWARDS THE VISION WE ASPIRED. A VISION OF A FASHION MAGAZINE FROM THE ARAB REGION THAT THROWS THE SPOTLIGHT ON EMERGING DESIGNERS FROM THE REGION AND HIGHLIGHTS INSPIRING CREATIONS FROM THE GLOBAL FASHION INDUSTRY. A VISION TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE READERS BY REVISITING THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF LUXURY HOUSES. A VISION TO GAWK AT OUR OWN FAVOURITE CELEBRITIES, SOME FAMOUS AND SOME HANDPICKED FROM THE DOHA FASH-PACK. A VISION TO PRESENT THE BEST FASHION PRODUCTS, NOT JUST THE HIGH-END ONES BUT ALSO SOME CHOICES TO MAKE FASHION AS ACCESSIBLE AS POSSIBLE, FOR EVERYONE. IN THIS JOURNEY, WE COVERED THEMES THAT HIGHLIGHTED UPCOMING AND FAMOUS DESIGNERS IN ASIA AND WE WERE STUMPED BY THE OBVIOUS TALENT IN THAT QUARTER OF THE WORLD. WE EVEN UNVEILED A QATARI DESIGNER, WADHA AL HAJRI, WHO IS ALL SET TO BE QATAR’S ANSWER TO ALEXANDRA WANG OF THE AMERICAS, WITH DESIGNS THAT HAVE BECOME THE TALK OF THE REGION. WE TALKED ABOUT ACCESSORIES AND HOW THEY ADD OOMPH TO A DRAB OUTFIT, OUR WRITERS DISCUSSED FUR; THEY PROVOKED AND INSTIGATED A DEBATE. WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE ABAYA YET AGAIN AND WERE AMAZED BY THE INFINITE POSSIBILITIES THIS SUPPOSEDLY “BLACK, DRAB PIECE OF CLOTH” OFFERED, AND ADMIRED THE LOCAL TALENT HERE. WE RAVED ABOUT SUSTAINABLE DESIGNS AND MET THOSE DESIGNERS WHO WORKED MAGIC FROM RECYCLED PRODUCTS. WE GLORIFIED THE INTERNET ERA AND BROUGHT TO OUR READERS THE ENTIRE GAMUT OF ONLINE OPTIONS, TO JUST SIT BACK AND CLICK SHOP. WE WERE THRILLED WITH QATAR’S OWN FASHION HOUSE, QELA AND PROUDLY PRESENTED THEIR COLLECTIONS. THE LAST YEAR HAS BEEN A JOURNEY WELL-EMBEDDED IN FASHION, IN ALL ITS GLORY WITH SOME SHAME (TOUCHING ON THE BANGLADESH TRAGEDY INVOLVING MULTI-BILLION FASHION HOUSES’ AND THEIR LACK OF SAFETY MEASURES), BUT ALL LEARNING LESSONS FOR EACH ONE OF US. PERSONALLY, IT HAS BEEN A JOURNEY OF INFINITE UNDERSTANDING OF THE BUSINESS OF FASHION, THE RICHNESS IN ITS HISTORY, THE ART IN FASHION AND THE INFINITE LAYERS AND DETAIL THAT CONSTITUTE FASHION. I HAVE LEARNT TO LOVE FASHION BUT NOT TO BE DICTATED BY IT. AND, AS DIANA VREELAND SO FAMOUSLY PUT IT, I WANT TO REMIND OUR READERS THAT FASHION IS NOT AT ALL ABOUT WHAT DRESS YOU WEAR BUT THE LIFE THAT YOU LEAD IN THAT DRESS. AU REVOIR 2013!

EDITOR’S PICK LOOKING BACK… GLAM ASKED ITS READERS TO PICK THEIR FAVOURITE GLAM COVERS AND THOUGH WE GOT SOME ANSWERS THERE WEREN’T ENOUGH TO PICK A WINNER. SO I TAKE THE PRIVILEGE OF PICKING MY FAVOURITE ONES, THE HEAVENLY DITA VON TESSE ON OUR GLAM FEBRUARY 2013, OUR OWN SHOOT ON GLAM JULY-AUGUST 2013 AND THE QELA COLLECTION IN OUR GLAM OCTOBER 2013. IT WAS A TOUGH PICK AS I LOVE IT ALL, FROM THE COVER TO THE LAST PAGE, AS THERE IS A STORY OF TOIL, TEAMWORK AND PASSION EMBEDDED IN EACH PAGE. BUT THEN LET’S KEEP SOME STORIES TO OURSELVES...

A PASSION FOR ART Lanvin and Alber Elbaz pay tribute to César at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he took classes between 1943-48, before later becoming a professor. In a setting where fashion becomes the showcase for art, the famous window displays of the oldest fashion house of Faubourg Saint-Honoré will display three works by the artist, lent by the César Foundation: Main (1968), Compression Fragonard (1984) and Hayon Corail (1986). From 25 October they become a part of the Alber Elbaz universe, and art lovers will have the opportunity to admire these original works for a month in advance of the exhibition at Luxembourg & Dayan, New York. The events celebrate César’s dialogue with fashion and reflect Alber Elbaz’s personal interest in art. This showcase event expresses Lanvin’s desire to contribute to the influence of contemporary design. Since June 2012, the fashion house has been patron of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, a patronage that demonstrates a historical interest in the world of art. Jeanne Lanvin herself held the opinion that art was very close to the heart of fashion. Her proximity with artists, writers, musicians and decorators of the time led her to prioritise collaborations that stirred her passions.

THE JUNGLE

A DRESS BY DEBRINA ALIYAH

The contrast satin panel on this dress is what drew us to it the moment we saw it on the runway. A different twist from the usual flowing and more feminine cuts we usually see from Alice Temperley, this tuxedo-inspired dress makes a good alternative for the party season this year-end. Not only does it enhance an elongated silhouette to your body, it makes a great match to your partner’s tuxedo ensemble too! The solid colour base is a great canvas to experiment with different accessories and we are thinking animal prints for the complete power look.

when Franz Schwennicke began cataloguing the bags of Delvaux, a company he had taken over in the 1930s, it was kind of an inherent nationalistic identity at work. The Livre d’Or (the Golden Book), the first of its kind, recorded in detail the original designs of each bag and its designer. Not only had Franz protected the designs from counterfeiting with the book, he became the first person to develop the concept of seasonal collections for handbags. The history of Delvaux began some 184 years ago, when Charles Delvaux and his wife Jeanne-Joseph Present registered their workshop on Rue de l’Empereur in 1829. But what we most recognise today as Delvaux, the purveyor of luxury handbags, was masterminded by the Schwennicke

family in the post-war era. The original Delvaux-Present families were involved in saddlery, coach-building, dressmaking, and trade, and were skilled in leather, metal, and woodworking. This legacy had helped Charles excel at the crafting of leather trunks, earning the house the royal warrant of Belgium. The distinctive element that separated Delvaux trunks in that era from its European contemporaries was the bowl-shaped lids of the trunk covers. The rainy weather of Belgium had dictated the design to prevent rainwater from collecting on the cases. His trunks were later also described by restorer Jean-Pierre Ball of the BelMal Museum (a private Belgian museum specialising in antique and vintage trunks) as ‘overly strong’, with distinctive iron cladding that

widened towards the bottom and an extra row of brass nails hammered into the metal cladding strips. The uncertainty of war and materials shortage sealed the fate of Delvaux, and in 1933, when Franz had come to acquire the house, it was only down to a storefront and an old name. Intrigued by the heritage of the name, Franz was determined to bring Delvaux back to its glory on the foundation of its original essence, high quality manufacture, original designs and durable products. With the introduction of the creative studio, the technical department and the atelier, Franz laid down the foundation of a luxury handbag house. His creation, the Avia suitcase cast with a lightweight aluminum frame, was such a success in 1946 that it paved the way for a burst of creative energy within the brand. It was in that era that Delvaux produced dozens of original designs in seasonal collections echoing the haute couture industry of France. he next defining chapter for Delvaux came with the passing of Franz in 1970, and the company was taken over by his wife, Solange Schwennicke. Solange was a real trailblazer who fought to win respect as a female entrepreneur, an uncommon phenomenon in that era, and putting Delvaux on the luxury map against its bigger French and English rivals. Her efforts were well rewarded when Delvaux flourished in the 1980s when luxury

leather goods became extremely popular and Solange’s status as Belgium’s most prominent female CEO was celebrated. Though the house has become the icon of luxury in its own home country, its global expansion has only begun recently through a partnership with its new owners, Fung Brands Limited. The Signature Bags The Brilliant is Delvaux’s most iconic piece that debuted at the Brussels World Fair in 1958. A single top handle piece that is anchored by one buckle, the bag was originally presented in the classic Box Calf leather but today, the bag is offered in various leathers, colours and versions to suit the contemporary market. To celebrate the bag’s 50th birthday in 2008, the atelier created the 10 Moods of the Brilliant, where the bags were given different reincarnations to depict different statements. The bags have been travelling around the world as an art installation.

Another understated signature piece is the Tempete that first came to life in 1967. Also a top handle piece, the bag features an interesting dual buckle and strap, and is also available in different materials and colours. The Craftsmanship Every Delvaux bag is made lovingly by hand in the atelier in Brussels where the artisans work in teams to complete each piece. Each individual design has its own intricate construction, for example, the house’s signature Brilliant bag is handstitched together from 64 different pieces of leather. Delvaux has a very unique, almost revered, relationship with its leathers. The artisans understand that the basis of every good masterpiece comes from the perfect leathers. While three quarters of Delvaux bags are produced in calfskin, the house is also held in high regards for its work in exotic leathers that goes beyond just crocodile and ostrich skins. The design studio, playing on this strength, combines different materials when designing bags to give the pieces truly unique voices of their own. The crafting of these bags has become an emotional journey for the truly dedicated artisans. Mohammed Benelcaid, who has

“I would say hello, and tell them that I made the bag that they are carrying and ask for their feedback.” been in the Delvaux workshop since 1973, says that he often strikes up conversations with women who are carrying Delvaux bags. “I would say hello, and tell them that I made the bag that they are carrying and ask for their feedback.” Mohammed also teaches at Brussel’s Institut des Arts et Metiers, a highly popular craftsmen school as it is the only one that uses Delvaux leathers in its classes. The first Delvaux boutique in the Middle East is now open at Porto Arabia, The Pearl.

BIG FASHION MOMENTS

02

DOLCE & GABBANA

When the brand announced a couple of temporary store closing in subtle defiance to the tax fraud allegations, Italian fashion editors stood by them in solidarity. For a moment, we wondered, what would the Italian fashion scene be if the duo really did go to jail? But that’s all water under the bridge now, as we gasped a little at the sultry Monica Belucci as a rather naughty figure in their current campaign.

05 QELA

It has been a long journey in the making but we were thrilled when QELA finally opened its doors. The artisanal craftsmanship and finesse in its offerings is a sure sign that this brand is serious about its work and is ready to put Qatar on the map of the global luxury scene. QELA, Porto Arabia.

Did we shed a tear when we heard? It was heart-breaking but we always appreciate when talents know that it’s time to retire while they are still at their peak. After 16 long years, Marc Jacobs bids goodbye to LV, presenting his last collection that was retrospective of his career at the luxury house and as a tribute to ‘the showgirl in all of us’. We will always be grateful for MJ who gave life to LV’s ready-to-wear collection.

THE SKIN CARE MAKE UP POWER HOUSES SKINCARE AND MAKE-UP GOES HAND IN HAND SO WE HAVE POOLED TOGETHER 6 & 6 OF OUR FAVOURITE PRODUCTS AND BRANDS FOR THE YEAR. REMEMBER, A GREAT SKIN BASE IS THE BEST TOOL TOWARDS FLAWLESS MAKEUP!

01

CHANEL SOLEIL TAN DE CHANEL BRONZING MAKEUP BASE, QR182 Before you go, ‘But we live in the desert!’, this bronzer is an effective solution to give an even tone to your skin before make up. You can also use it to contour your face for a defined look.

DIORBLUSH CHEEK CREME CAPRI, QR141 The crème texture is a little tricky to the untrained hands but once you get the hang of it, it is a big advantage to the usual powder blushers. Using just the tip of your fingers to apply, the results are happy natural blushing cheeks.

02

DIOR CHRISTMAS LIP NAILS PALETTE, QR281 Lip colour is the beauty highlight of the season, and we wouldn’t want to be caught with clashing nail colours especially in such a strong red shade! Dior has always been a go-to for excellent make-up palettes and this lip and nail combo is a real winner.

03

THE BODY SHOP MADAGASCAR VANILLA RANGE Part of the brand’s Scent of the World collection, we fell in love with the Madagascan vanilla scents that kept our summer vacation dreams close to us.

04

05

CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE RANGE This intensely hydrating range from Clinique is a real lifesaver for us desert-dwellers especially during extreme weather months. The hydrator is perfect for day and night use to keep skin dewy.

06

CLARINS SKIN ILLUSION LOOSE POWDER FOUNDATION, QR164 We love this almost magic concoction that is not only useful as a foundation base but also as a setting powder to finish your make up. The in-built brush is so soft that we wish we could use it with other products!

FOCUS / 57

09 07

MAC PREP & PRIME SKIN, QR123 The silicone base for this primer is a big plus as it makes the application of foundation easier and smoother. Not only does it help disguise fine lines, it also gives a glowing effect from under your make up!

11

BOBBI BROWN SMOKEY COOL EYE PALETTE, QR223 Like a good old red lipstick, the smoky eyes make up routine will also be a classic number for a fail proof evening look. We love the combination of shades and blends in this palette that gives just the right vibes.

08

LAURA MERCIER CREME SMOOTH LIP COLOUR SPICED ROSE, QR100 We highly recommend the crème smooth range for its buttery texture. This is perfect for everyday use to give just a tinge of shade to your lips.

GARNIER ULTRALIFT RANGE When Garnier launched the Ultralift Challenge two years ago allowing women to put its anti-wrinkle claim to the test, it was such a success that it got stuck on us for a while. The products are a combination of effectiveness and affordability, making it an all-time favourite for us.

10 12

L’OCCITANE FLEUR D’OR & ACACIA RANGE Famed for their all natural and floral notes, this new range from L’occitane is exceptionally special for its scents that evoke the warmth of a relaxing vacation.

LANCOME BLUSH ROSE DESIR, QR205 This is one of the hot buys for the year, from Lancome’s limited edition L’Absolu Desir AW13 collection. It comes with a double-ended brush that somehow just magically delivers the right amount of powder for application. And to make it collector’s worthy, the black case of Rose Désir Blush is embossed in gold.

LET’S TALK ABOUT NOW BY WILL PAVIA / THE TIMES MAGAZINE / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

DON’T ASK ABOUT HER FUTURE PLANS, WILL PAVIA IS TOLD BEFORE MEETING THIS YEAR’S MEGA-MODEL, MIRANDA KERR. SO, CAN HE COMPLY?

FASHIONISTA / 61

THE SUPERMODEL

MIRANDA KERR

stretches out on a chaise longue in a hotel in downtown Manhattan. “Don’t mind me, I’m just going to put my feet up,” she says. The Spanish clothing company Mango has taken over the top floor of a fine hotel. Kerr, 30, is its ambassador and increasingly a potentate in her own right. For a while she was better known as the wife of the British actor Orlando Bloom, but while he has faded from view like an elf disappearing into a forest, his pixie-ish Australian spouse is popping up everywhere. Some attribute her fame to social networking nous – more than two million follow her on Instagram. Others just think she is extremely good at getting dressed in the morning. Forbes ranked her as the second highest paid model in the world, with annual earnings of QR25 million and a huge following in Asia. I have submitted a list of rather vague inquiries, so broad and harmless that they are practically pleasantries. One of them is: “What are your future plans?” “She won’t speak about religion,” one of the Mango apparatchiks tells me. “She doesn’t want to speak about her marriage. She doesn’t want to speak about her future plans.” She won’t discuss her future plans? “Those three questions have not been approved,” the young woman continues, with a sad smile. Gosh. What are Miranda Kerr’s future plans, I wonder? The subject has suddenly taken on new significance. I begin to imagine all sorts of awful scenarios. Is she planning a military coup? A romantic comedy with Ben Stiller? A campaign with Marks & Spencer? A woman in gauzy trousers passes through the room carrying Kerr’s dog, a Yorkie named Frankie. I start wondering if Miranda Kerr is planning the assassination of Gisele Bündchen. Then another aide comes to fetch me. As she is escorting me outside, she says, “You remember the questions we are not allowed to ask?” Now it sounds as if no one is allowed to ask Miranda Kerr about her future plans, as if the topic is subject to a general fatwa. Kerr is wearing dark wedge heels, which, she says, afford “nice toe cleavage”, and which she places up on the chaise longue. Her long legs are clad in red leopard-print trousers, and what would she

call this loose grey top? “We say T-shirt, Down Under,” she says. Her lipstick is scarlet and she wears a lot of make-up, but her eyes are pearly blue and devastating. The accessories, the bags and belts, are all about studs, apparently. “The last campaign I did was more feminine and sexy,” she says. “This one is more grungy and cool.” Kerr succeeded Penélope Cruz and Kate Moss as the first lady of Mango. “I know Penélope very well,” she says. “Kate is the epitome of cool and Penélope is just really beautiful and very feminine.” What does Kerr bring to this party? “Hopefully, women feel they can relate to me,” she says. She tells me she likes lager and chips “every now and then, especially when I go to England”. She says she likes English pubs. She gives a wholesome account of her childhood in New South Wales. “I was always climbing the willow tree at my grandparents’ farm,” she says. “We had horses and motorbikes and I was always outside. I was making mud pies. Like, you know, with the mud.” She was a child gymnast, competing all over Australia: she thinks the core strength she developed helped her later as a model. “They discovered me when I was 13,” she says. Still, modelling was more of a summer job. She went to the Academy of Natural Living in Queensland and qualified as a health coach. She never quite planned to be a supermodel. “Even now, I’m like: ‘OK’,” she says, and trills with laughter at the thought of it. She met Bloom backstage at a Victoria’s Secret show in 2007, where he was apparently taken by her unaffected, mud-pie-making personality. They married in 2010. Their son, Flynn, was born in the spring of 2011. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “I love having a son.” Seven weeks after giving birth to Flynn, she was striding down a runway in Paris. “That wasn’t really my intention,” she says. “It was just Nicolas [Ghesquière] at the time was working at Balenciaga.” The influential designer had cast her in a previous show when she was seven months pregnant. “He called and said, ‘Hey, I think it’s amazing you did the show while you were pregnant. Would you like to do it again now?’ Orlando said, that way we get to go to Europe and see his family.” After that, she went back to full-time motherhood. “I was breastfeeding for a year and a half,” she says. “It’s like a twilight zone.” Flynn sometimes appears in her Instagram feed, although she tries to keep his face hidden. “My son is such a big part of my life that it’s hard not to share him,” she says. “There’s a fine line between expressing my love and my passion for him and also protecting him as much as I can as a mother. I know that there are paparazzi photos out there, but there’s nothing we can do about that.” She also tries to keep her location obscure, for fear of tipping off

She doesn’t want to speak about her marriage. She doesn’t want to speak about her future plans.

FASHIONISTA / 63

the tabloids. She pulls out her iPhone. “I saw this downtown,” she says, showing me a picture of a heart-shaped hole in a fence. “If it’s somewhere that people might recognise, I’ll do it after the fact. In the same day, but after the fact.” There are lots of pictures of herself, too, although none of her followers seems to mind that. It is, in a sense, the perfect mode of communication for a model. “I feel like you have to be really, really careful with your words,” she says, carefully. “But with pictures you can show a bit of your day without exposing too much of your life.” he says she does it quite spontaneously and joyfully, although not entirely without a sense of the commercial implications. “You can stay connected with your customers and they have a database, they have a platform where they can connect with you and say things to you if they want to,” she says. After so much talk of helping women “to be their authentic selves”, she suddenly sounds rather hardheaded. When I ask her what happens if the modelling career falls apart, she points out that she is the founder and managing director of her own skincare company, Kora Organics. “I have board meetings, management meetings,” she says. “I’ve got a full staff of 30 working for me.”

S

What is she like to work for? “Ask her,” she says, pointing at her aide, who is hovering nearby and trying to tell me that my time is up. “Am I a strict boss?” “Sometimes,” the aide replies and smiles, before back-pedalling furiously from this small joke. “No, she’s super-easy. She’s the best.” You have to say that though, I say. The aide says she recently uprooted from Los Angeles and moved to New York, just to work for Kerr. “That’s how amazing she is.” “You have to be aware and on top of your game and present,” says Kerr. “And truthful. Just honest with people.” This seems like a good time to ask about her future plans. Is she planning a military coup? “Not right now,” she says. It’s just I was told not to ask about her future plans, I say. I thought only someone who was planning a military coup, or something equally dreadful, would not want to answer that question. “That’s hilarious,” she says. She has a warm, slightly discordant laugh. “I like your sense of humour.” I’m afraid with that – a supermodel laughing and saying she liked my sense of humour – I lose the thrust of my inquiry. Then she says she likes my tie. “It’s my favourite colour, red,” she says. By now the question of Miranda Kerr’s future plans has vanished from my head. I leave thinking she is a wonderful person. Who knows what she is planning.

64 \ STYLE PROFILE ANUM BASHIR

DESERT

CHIC

DURING ONE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN, ANUM DECIDED TO EMBARK ON A FASHION EXPERIMENT. SHE DESIGNED A WEEK’S WORTH OF JALABIYAS AND WORE THEM TO WORK EVERY DAY.

W

ithout fail, she was approached by different women every day to ask about the dresses and where they could get their hands on them. “Women in Doha are desperately seeking for something different. Everyone wanted something new, something unique,” Anum explained. Known in the blogosphere as the Desert Mannequin, Anum feels strongly of the need for individual style and abhors blind followers of trends. “There is just something so blasé about seeing copies of women wearing the same thing all over.” On her blog, she shares her inspirations and posts daily outfits.

I HAVE LOVED styling and pretty much anything fashion related for as long as I can remember, so I kind of owed it to myself to start blogging about it. My take on fashion was something I truly wanted to share. So in a way reading my morning blogs at breakfast everyday further pushed me to get started, especially because not a lot of people here in Doha actually blog about their personal style. MY PERSONAL STYLE is ever changing. However, I find myself incredibly drawn to androgynous fashion. I love menswear on women. Recently, I find myself buying clothes that are a lot simpler, clean cut, monochromatic, and that are both masculine and feminine at the same time. Brands like Celine, Alexander Wang, Saint Laurent, and Phillip Lim, are the looks I generally tend to lean towards. Nothing looks more elegant than a crisp white dress shirt with say, black slacks or a great pair of jeans. I’ve also been loving suits on women, and have bought a couple lately. I will occasionally indulge in a bold print or some fabulous colour if it’s appropriate for the event I’m going to. Your clothes are an extension of who you are. You’ll know you look good when you feel confident and have your head held high as soon as you walk out your door. MY STYLE INSPIRATION is Miranda Kerr. She is always so impeccably dressed. She looks so effortlessly put together. Lately, I’ve also been loving how Nicole Richie dresses. She tends to incorporate more androgynous and minimalist pieces into her wardrobe such as tailored shirts and brogues. I’m a true fan of Style Heroine’s Evangelie, and The Man Repeller’s Leandra. They have a fabulous and fun take on fashion, and have tastes very much in line with mine.

that it is a concept all new to this region, especially where style makers have long used the abaya as a blank canvas to express their personal style; the colourful peeks of dresses from under the hems, the accessories galore, and the statement shoes and bags. But at the recent Sheikhahub event at the W Hotel Doha, it is evident that the power of Islamic fashion, or modest dressing, has come forth further than just abayas. The shimmering kaftan dresses, the pairing of voluminous separates and the ingenious different styles of head coverings seemed like a spectacular avant-garde presentation, albeit bare skin. The designers who presented their works at the show had come from two parts of the world, South East Asia and the Middle East, bringing together a common principle of fashion and modesty. Debaj Collection and Dar Naseem Alandalos shared the runway with the four featured Malaysian designers while other Arab labels including Fufistylist, Palestyle, Das Collection and The Kayys were presented at the showcase. Sheikhahub, a Malaysian initiative, is a platform to assist entrepreneurs dedicated to the development of Islamic fashion. The collective runs various events from shows to networking sessions in Malaysia and around the world to help promote the fashion businesses of its members. Sheikhahub’s founder Datin Norzihan Ahmad, a prominent women empowerment figure in Malaysia, spearheaded the initiative in an effort to not only promote fashion but also encourage female entrepreneurship. The Qatar fashion show, in collaboration with Design Creationz Qatar, was organised as part of the Visit Malaysia 2014 tourism

effort and was attended by the wives of the prime ministers of both Qatar and Malaysia; Sheikha Alanoud bint Abdalrahman Althani and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. The Malaysian Designers Farah Adeeba and Nurul Azwin are the creative forces behind Najjah, a well-established label that focuses on affordable pieces. “I would often look at major fashion weeks and think how great it would be if we could adapt those pieces to the Islamic way of dressing. And then I decided to start Najjah, creating stylish and affordable fashion that is modest at the same time,” says Farah. Within a few years, Najjah was so well-received that the business now has an extended wholesale arm to cater to the growing market in Malaysia. Farah has also created a new platform, Women of Jannah, a collective of Islamic fashion brands that serves to help her fellow entrepreneurs. “Contrary to the fashion world globally, we are very focused on helping one another. I was lucky to have mentors who taught me the ways of the business and I want to do the same now for upcoming labels,” Farah says. Another design duo Azura Liyana and Azwa Elana who run the label AzuraAzwa, are the local Islamic fashion darlings in Malaysia. Highly received by the press for their cutting edge and contemporary pieces, the brand specialises in voluminous cuts that flatter all body shapes. But what really shot the label into international limelight were their luscious turbans and headwear. “The turban is really making a comeback especially with the younger generation and it is not only for Muslim women. Our turbans are trendy and versatile for any occasion,” says Azura. The two-year-old label Saraya Zahret has risen quickly to success. In the short time since its inception, the brand now includes diffusion lines From Jenna To Jo focusing on the younger clientele, Zahret Fabulosity With Curves focusing on plus-size clients and Tweenkle Zahret for the little ones. The signature pieces include cutting skirts and palazzo pants which form the staple basis towards modest dressing. And the thorn among the roses at Sheikhahub’s Qatar showing was Leslie Variyan, the designer behind one of the most established ready-to-wear labels in Malaysia, Variante. Variante is renowned for itsgorgeous chiffon and fluid pieces adorned with stone embellishments. “I had started out making shirts but somehow I was just attracted to the beauty of kaftans and dresses,” says Leslie.

SMOKEY SCENT The Body Shop announced the launch of the tantalising floral fragrance White Musk Smoky Rose, the new addition to the brand’s iconic cruelty-free White Musk range. This addictive scent opens with an elegant fusion of bergamot, pink pepper and blackcurrant before rising to a floral-musky heart. Launched in 1981 by The Body Shop, the White Musk range has not only been the brand’s best seller, it also represented a daring landmark in the fragrance industry. It was one of the first man-made, cruelty-free musk fragrances to arrive on the market instead of real musk, which is extracted from the civet deer via cruel and painful methods. The company has now trademarked White Musk in over 63 countries around the world in order to protect the unique, heritage scent. “We realise that it would be cheaper to use standard alcohol; but we have always dared to do things differently. The Body Shop began sourcing organic, Community Fair Trade alcohol in 2009 to use in its fragrances. That helped farmers in marginalised communities to pay for food, health and education; and to plan for the future,” said Brett Lilley, Business Manager at The Body Shop. “We are very proud of the success that the White Musk range received and is still receiving throughout the different markets. We are very confident that the White Musk Smoky Rose with its cruelty-free ingredients will have the same success in the Middle East region,” he added.

A TOUCH OF ROUGE “Dare to wear seductive colours that will give your lips a natural yet glorious shine,” says make up artist Bassam Fattouh. The innovatively-slim lip colour that combines the creamy texture of a lipstick with the glorious shine and fluidity of a lipgloss does just that. Twinkly’s spring-inspired bold shades have a natural pay off that will leave your lips with a warm flush. This slender stick-shaped lipstick designed for precise application, will coat your lips with a sheer luxurious colour that will stay put for hours while keeping your lips hydrated and conditioned. The rich yet lightweight formula glides on effortlessly and stays on comfortably without feeling sticky or gluey. Twinkly can be applied with a brush or directly onto the lips. Courtesy Relax News

Out with the heavy eye shadows and deeply lined eyes, minimalist makeup takes the stage this fall, an ode to the fashion collections that has been leaning onto androgynous. Keeping a solid foundation with flawless complexion is key, as seen at Valentino and Marc Jacobs. For the evenings, draw colour to just the lips with a variation of red as seen at Lanvin and Bottega Veneta.

This season, it is all about the ‘barely there skin’ makeup; soft dew on cheeks, bold lips, groomed brows, and warm eyes. TOOLS

MAC has collaborated with Rebecca Moses this fall for travel makeup sets. It includes 2 brush sets, one for face and one for eyes. I recommend getting both since it is a bargain and makes for flawless applications. And for those who prefer sponges, Beauty Blender sponge is a good makeup sponge applicator which can allow you to blend, buff, and reach areas for makeup coverage.

PREP

In order to achieve the ‘barely there skin’, a good exfoliating must be done. Exfoliate skin with MAC Mineralize Volcanic Ash. It’s dual phase foaming, natural volcanic ash and fine sugar ingredients helps unclog pores, instant moisture, refines skin which leaves skin soft and clean, making it ready for make-up. Also having a very good skin dermatologist or a facial is good, too.

SKIN

A very good tinted moisturizer, bb cream, or cc cream is a must have for either daily or red carpet look. It provides build-able coverage and is very light weight. I recommend Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF 30, Diorskin Nude BB Crème, Laura Mercier SPF Tinted Moisturizer 20, or MAC Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15.

CONCEALER

We usually apply concealer first but the trend now is to apply concealer after skin makeup to give a lifting effect. I recommend MAC Studio Finish Concealer for full coverage that is build-able. Best applied with a foundation brush or a beauty blender.

CONTOUR AND BLUSH

This season, skin contour is less structured. Like Blake’s contour, sweep MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Medium Deep on the hollows of your cheekbones, nose line, jawbones, forehead bone, and chin. This will create an illusion of a natural structured and perfect colored skin make-up.

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour Tamara Red, QR100

Pale peach-pinks are a huge trend for this season. Blake Lively’s cheeks are subtle pale pink-peach to compliment her eye color and bold lips statement. Apply minimal touches of MAC Creme Blush in Ladyblush on the apples of the cheeks and highlight upper cheeks with MAC Soft and Gentle for a soft glow using an angled blush brush.

EYES

Warm colors such as gold, copper, bronze, honey, and terracotta are the safest colors to wear for any outfit, night outs, and daily wear. I recommend these colours; MAC Amber Lights applied with a flat eyeshadow brush, MAC Kid applied with a fluffy eyeshadow brush for crease and angled brush for the lower eyes, MAC Ricepaper applied with a flat eyeshadow brush on brow bone, and MAC Goldmine with a small blender eyeshadow brush. You can get these eyeshadows customized for you in a 4x MAC Eyeshadow Palette for only QR30. For mascara, I recommend Lancome Hypnose Mascara for extra bold and curled lashes and MAC Brow Mascara in Tinted for perfectly groomed brows. Finish off with Blacktrack MAC Gel Liner to define eyes, and MAC #20 Lashes to define lashes.

LIPS

Perfectly worn with either metallic eyes, bare, or subtle eye makeup, matte reds are IN this season. For a perfect pout like Blake’s, cover lips with concealer to cover natural discoloration. Dust powder for extra finish. Line lips with lipliner to help maintain lipstick’s hold. With a lip brush, apply lipstick to full lips. I recommend MAC Ruby Woo and Russian Red for matte lipsticks and MAC Cherry and Red Lipliners. Outline the sides of the lips with a bit of concealer to perfect your bold lip statement.

MAKE-UP FIX

In order to maintain make-up like Blake’s, and rehydrate skin, a good skin fixer is a must have. I recommend MAC Fix and Urban Decay’s All Nighter Spray. For oily skin to stay matte, apply MAC Mattefyant Gel on T zone and laugh lines.

What

we do will reflect on our skin, so I’m here to help you get ready for the festive season. Skincare is really important during this period and if you can, I highly recommend you indulge yourself in a pre-holiday season pamper session. This will ensure your skin is plumped, glowing and you will be feeling refreshed and relaxed. For some, there will be the drastic change of weather, for others, there will be the stress of receiving the whole family at home, resulting in blemishes and dull skin. The foundation for flawless, radiant skin starts with a deep cleansing, deep hydration and then protection. Here in Remede Spa we have one of the best pre-event facials, the Tri Enzyme Resurfacing Facial by Elemis. This treatment is special as it has 3 peelings, to break down the keratin bonds in the skin and dissolves all the dead skin cells while at the same time it soothes your skin. This facial will instantly renew and resurface your skin. The skin is left incredibly clean, smooth and radiant. I recommend continuing to use your existing products but add a boost like a serum. One that I would recommend, linked with our facial, is the Tri Enzyme Resurfacing Serum which will stimulate the skins natural cell renewal cycle, peel, smooth and moisturise the skin plus providing anti-oxidant

Skincare starts from the inside out and hydration is the golden key to a great looking skin.

protection. This will help maintain a stunning complexion with a luminous skin tone all holiday season. I know it is tempting after a late night to not remove our makeup: this is a mistake, try to take the extra few minutes to clean your face; you are doing your skin a big favour as it will allow it to breathe and recover, reducing the chance of clogged pores and blemishes. Sometimes, after a short night’s sleep, we wake up with dark circles or puffy eyes so even with a glowing skin we are not looking that good but do not worry I have a very easy solution. Prepare yourself some green tea, with two tea bags. The tea will be for you and the tea bags for your eyes! Leave the two bags to cool, then lie down for 10 minutes and place them over your eyes. The caffeine will tighten the skin and reduce the swelling while the cool feeling will improve the circulation hence no more dark circles. You see, miracles can happen during Xmas! When it comes to your body, you will need a body scrub, hydration and a bit of energy. You have everything at home to achieve this. Use a body brush and brush your body quite vigorously especially on the problems area such as thighs and hips, this will improve circulation and reduce the orange peel look. Mix sea salt or brown sugar with a little olive, almond or coconut oil and scrub in circular motions on your skin. Wash and pat dry, then deeply hydrate your skin with shea butter or oil. Once a week your skin needs something stronger than regular body lotion and oils are renowned as the best moisturisers. Last but not the least: do not forget to drink plenty of water, today, tomorrow and forever. Skincare starts from the inside out and hydration is the golden key to a great looking skin. By drinking water you will flush out toxins and your body will look even better! A useful holiday season tip: keep some tea tree oil on-hand for unwelcome blemishes, dab a little tea tree oil on it and it will most likely reduce or even disappear.

SCENT SENSIBILITY

If

you thought creating a signature perfume was simple, think again. Leading international fragrance manufacturers spend years perfecting a perfume that resonates with loyal followers universally. Adding another dimension to this competitive fragrant field is the merging of two scents, to create something totally unique. The team at Jo Malone London recently held a session with their Fragrance Director, Chris Wyatt, who flew in from the UK to show how fragrance combining works. Media from across the Middle East were invited to partake in a fragrance combining workshop in Dubai where an individual perfume was created based on each one’s personality. Acquired by the Estée Lauder Companies in 1999, Jo Malone London is synonymous with luxury and elegance. From aromatic colognes, body lotions, bath gels and fragrant creams, they also have a popular range of home diffusers. The brand is available in 33 countries worldwide including Qatar’s Villaggio Mall. Chris joined the group in 2010 after nine years in the beauty industry with both fragrance and cosmetic brands. Having also worked with MAC, his wealth of international expertise includes

14 seasons at London Fashion Week, a high-profile presence at Milan and creative artistry with Julien Macdonald in Shanghai. Despite his in-depth knowledge and passion for perfumes, Chris doesn’t immediately shower us with heady smells. He gets to know his subjects at an elegantly planned dinner the night before. The Ivy, at Emirates Towers Dubai, is the venue for an elaborate meal where each course illustrates the sensuality of fragrance in foods. In a feast of the palette and the senses, the room is filled with aromatic candle light and diffusers - courtesy of Jo Malone, of course. At the workshop the next day, I am asked to define the smells I prefer. Citrus, pomegranate, nectarine, jasmine, lime basil or mandarin are a few, among the many on display. I didn’t want something too strong and Chris was soon able to show me a mixture of mint and white jasmine. Since jasmine is not an aroma I usually prefer, I was surprised that the combination of other elements brought out a subtlety which made the overall fragrance more appealing. “We encourage you to combine scents that speak to you, enabling you to create your own scented statement. Something that’s entirely personal to you,” says Chris. There clearly is a science to the olfactory sense.

EXPERIENCE / 101

CREATE YOUR OWN BESPOKE SIGNATURE SCENT FRAGRANCE DIRECTOR, CHRIS WYATT SHARES SOME OF THE IMPORTANT DETAILS OF CREATING A SIGNATURE SCENT EXCLUSIVELY WITH THE READERS OF GLAM. How does fragrance combining work? Fragrance combining is simply about layering two scents together and allowing their delicately crafted ingredients, their heart notes, base notes and top notes to mingle and wrap their qualities around each other creating a unique character with its own subtleties and spirit: your own scented statement. You might start with a body lotion for a delicate base which you could enhance with a cologne. For example English pear and freesia body crème will be both uplifted and deepened by a spritz of Oud and bergamot cologne. Equally amber and lavender body and hand wash lingering on your skin will be enlivened by the zing of grapefruit cologne and a red roses bath oil followed by peony and blush suede cologne will create a symphony of florals. How do I know what scents will go together and which will clash? There are no rules. Fragrance combining allows you to experiment until you discover a scent that perfectly fits. It’s about being playful, experimenting until you discover something that reflects who you are and the impression you want to create. You might choose a signature floral like red roses which you can freshen with the citrus zing of grapefruit one day, or spice up with saffron for a warm allure on another. What should you look for when choosing a fragrance? As a starting point you could look at the different fragrance families. You may find you are drawn to citrus, spicy, fruity or floral. You may have an emotional and sensory connection with a particular genre of scent. From there you can play to lift or to deepen fragrance, to spice or to complicate, to simplify or to add mystery, and create something special to you. What is a fragrance wardrobe? We change according to our moods, aspirations and naturally the season. We all have our own signature scent but, just as with our wardrobe, we need options. You can’t always wear the same suit or evening dress, your choices and style will change. The seasons change a mood and, since warmer weather can change your skin chemistry, the fragrances you loved in the winter may not deliver in the summer or on holiday. Your favourite woody will suddenly feel wrong in the heat, something lighter, more zesty will feel refreshing on the skin. How you wear your fragrance is just as important.

“Your fragrance wardrobe is as important as your fashion wardrobe . As your scent, your clothes, should always reflect your style and personality.” Can you share some fragrance advice? When it’s humid, spritz fragrance on your clothes and mist your hair - this will hold scent longer. Your fragrance wardrobe is as important as your fashion wardrobe - as your scent, like your clothes, should always reflect your style and personality. What scent do you prefer? Black vetyver café and pomegranate noir, owing to their addictive scents, are my favourite.
