G Talk NOBODY WANTS TO ADMIT IT BUT FEBRUARY IS ALWAYS THE MONTH WHEN WE QUIETLY TRY TO REVIVE THE JOVIAL AND HOPEFUL NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS THAT WE HAVE MADE AND PROBABLY ALREADY SIDETRACKED. IT HAS BEEN A CALM START TO THE YEAR IN QATAR WITH THE COOL TEMPERATURES WHICH WE WELCOMED BY BREAKING OUT OUR WINTER WARDROBES. SHAME THAT WINTER IS ALWAYS A FLEETING MOMENT WITH US HERE BUT THERE IS SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN THE GORGEOUS RESORT 2014 COLLECTIONS THAT HAVE NOW HIT STORES. TWO OF THESE SPECIAL COLLECTIONS GET A WELL-WORTH MENTION THIS MONTH, THE WORKS OF MARY KATRANTZOU AND ROKSANDA ILLINCIC. THE DUO, BASED IN LONDON, COME FROM ARCHITECTURE BACKGROUNDS AND VENTURED MOST SUCCESSFULLY INTO THE WORLD OF FASHION. THE RESULT, SCULPTURALLY PRECISE SILHOUETTES WITH PERSPECTIVE-CHANGING PRINTS THAT TURNS FASHION ITEMS INTO ART PIECES THEMSELVES. IT IS THIS SPIRIT THAT UPLIFTS THE ESSENCE OF FASHION FROM THE MASS CIRCUS THAT IT HAS SOMEHOW BECOME IN RECENT TIMES. THE RED-CARPET SEASON AND COUTURE PRESENTATIONS ARE FRESH ON OUR MINDS, AND THOUGH NO BIZARRE LOOKS WERE NOTICED THIS TIME, IT HAS DEFINITELY LEFT US WANTING SOMETHING MORE REFINED. IN THIS MONTH OF LOVE, IT IS ALSO THE PERFECT EXCUSE FOR US TO RECONNECT WITH THOSE CLOSEST TO US, WHETHER AS INDULGENT MATERIAL GRATIFICATIONS OR SELF-PAMPERING RETREATS. A SHORT WEEKEND BREAK AWAY TO THE CLUB LOUNGE PRIVILEGES OF THE RITZ CARLTON, OR A SENSUAL COUPLES’ EXPERIENCE AT THE ST. REGIS’S REMEDE SPA MAKES FOR SPECIAL MOMENTS TO REKINDLE THE SPARK. LOVE, IS AFTER ALL, THE CURE OF ALL AILMENTS.

FEBRUARY 2014 MCQ SPRING-SUMMER 2014 CAMPAIGN

The youthful second line from the Alexander McQueen fashion stable has revealed its darkly playful new campaign for Spring/Summer 2014, photographed by fashion legend Steven Klein in London. Perhaps the most arresting image in the new McQ campaign is that of Frank Le Bon (younger brother of London fashion photographer Tyrone) wearing his Spring-Summer outfit with a twisted face-paint makeup look that sits somewhere between clown and kabuki. Le Bon was joined on set by models Sean Semmens, Arwel, Ine Neefs, Brogan Loftus, Declan Cullen, and Edward Kasisopa. The young cast occupy a club-like space, with stuffed animals and CCTV cameras lurking in the background, perfectly matching the brand’s dark and rebellious aesthetic.

ETHICAL AFRICA BAGS

The designer has revealed a new line of ethical bags made on the continent from recycled materials. Fashion has been experiencing a boom in all things African, from the recent Guinness adverts starring Congolese ‘sapeurs’ to Diesel and Edun’s African denim-based capsule collection manufactured entirely in Africa with the finest Ugandan CCI cotton. Now, Vivienne Westwood, never one to miss out on either a trend or an opportunity to help push forward ethical fashion, has designed a new range of recycled bags which have been handmade in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Available in a range of styles from unisex rucksacks to totes and zipped clutches, the bags are manufactured from recycled canvas, reused roadside banners, and leather off-cuts and were carefully constructed by communities of women affected by extreme poverty.

19 NEW LINE OF ADIDAS ORIGINALS

The American designer Jeremy Scott has created a new SpringSummer 2014 collection for the German sportswear giant, once again fusing his classic bold designs with the sporty spirit of Adidas. Now ten years old, the Adidas Originals by Jeremy Scott line continues to celebrate luxury sportswear and streetwear. The latest collection mixes bold colours, fabrics and prints, all inspired by diverse transatlantic influences from the National Football League to the pearly Kings and Queens of London’s old East End. Meanwhile the designer celebrates his American heritage with a cropped US Football jersey with two-tone plastic numbers and sporty shorts, hot pants and jogging sweatpants. The former enfant terrible of the Los Angeles fashion scene, Scott is currently enjoying his new role as creative director at Italian luxury label Moschino.

MULBERRY TEA PARTY

British luxury brand Mulberry sponsored the annual BAFTA Los Angeles Awards Season Tea Party in Beverly Hills last month. Each January, BAFTA Los Angeles celebrates the men and women who have been nominated for year’s top awards including the Golden Globe, SAG, and EE British Academy Film Awards (the BAFTAs). The BAFTAs are held each February in London, and are one of the film industry’s most coveted accolades. Mulberry was the Presenting Sponsor for the 2014 BAFTA Los Angeles Awards Season Tea Party for the first time. The event was held at the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverley Hills, where Executive Chef Ashley James created an authentic English afternoon tea with treats including sandwiches of cucumber, watercress, and smoked salmon and, of course, scones and tea.

HAUTE COUTURE FASHION WEEK SNAPSHOTS

Maison Martin Margiela, Frank Sorbier and Elie Saab were among the labels that impressed fashionistas recently with their exceptional Spring-Summer 2014 collections. We take a look at some of the other highlights of the haute couture fashion week in Paris so far. MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA The famous fashion house unveiled the most extravagant collection seen so far during this haute couture fashion week. Their faces hidden by masks, the models wore highly colourful, retro, art-inspired and asymmetrical outfits or, in a stark contrast, ultra-refined strapless evening gowns draped in silk satin. A few dresses were printed to resemble tattoos. FRANK SORBIER Presented on an enormous black and white checkerboard, the French designer’s collection emphasized geometric prints, often seen in billowing bubble dresses with multiple patterns, one of which included an impressive landscape-style print on a white background.

Jean Paul Gaultier

ELIE SAAB The Lebanese designer lived up to his reputation with yet another enchanting

show. Each of the fairy-tale princess looks presented differed from the last but was tied into the common theme of embroidery, whether shimmery (sequins, beads, rhinestones and other reflective elements lit up the catwalk) or floral. Models wore long, airy gowns or ample skirted ones, all of which we could easily see coming to the red carpet. RAD HOURANI A star-studded audience attended the presentation of the designer’s latest unisex collection, consisting of geometric tailoring and monochromatic ensembles, primarily in black. The line consists of several transformable, multipurpose items that are not only stylish but also functional -- a word that rarely applies to haute couture creations. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER Butterflies provided the inspiration behind this latest captivating haute couture collection from JPG. Whether in prints, embroidery, or in the tailoring of collars and cuffs, butterflies were everywhere. The design house also presented a few looks with a more rebellious spirit, including a backless satin dress worn with a Swarovskicrystal-embroidered denim jacket.

TREND SETTING The new SS 2014 collection by Parfois is inspired by four main trends: Retro Sport, Craft Culture, Easy Going and Pastel Fever. Retro Sport is a strong trend inspired by sports and made for a bold woman symbolising the return of the past to the present. This trend mixes materials not seen before like acrylic boards, invisible magnets and striped webbings. Using a pallet of primary colours in colour blocking and prints inspired by graffiti, this trend reflects a sportive style mixed with classic shapes. Craft Culture trend brings for the first time the suede fabric to Parfois. Used in purses, this fabric is combined with luxurious and ethnic materials. Studs, tassels and fringes are also used in purses and shoes. The sweet Pastel Fever tones present accessories for delicate looks. Handbags with plastic applications and floral prints show the casual side of this trend - feminine, classic and timeless.

FRUITY FRAGRANCE As the sun sets, and the cherry trees reveal their ardent hues, beauty brand L’occitane gathers their scented petals to capture them in a new fragrance. This delicate harvest is warmed in vats to extract the essence of an intense, floral and fruity eau de parfum. The freshness of citrus top notes kindles over a sensual base of olive wood and musk, bringing out the sweet heart notes of this mouth-watering scent. The new, brightly coloured, screen-printed bottle symbolises the meaning of the setting sun and cherry trees. Red Cherry Eau Intense was created by Karine Dubreuile, perfumer for the brand. The brand has stores in Landmark and Villagio Malls.

February is the month of love and undoubtedly, a date is definitely penciled in somewhere in your diary. This season, we are recommending a back to basics approach to date night dressing. Strip down the trends and focus on pieces that highlight your natural beauty. Ramp up your confidence level with something naughty underneath and put your curves to work in a body-con dress. With an all black ensemble, you can play things up a little with an unexpected outer coat.

AN EDIT OF THINGS THAT ARE HOT NOW LOEWE ACIDS COLLECTION

It is a much respected craft; the art of leather-dying, and especially so the technique to achieve bright vivid colours on soft buttery leather. Paying homage to its most iconic symbol, the peacock, Loewe has launched a visually stunning collection named Acid, which incorporates the colours of the peacock’s plumage. The brand’s signature Amazona and Duna bags get a new look using a Technicolour makeover and adorned with gold hardware. Two sizes are available in a range of colours that are sure to be an eye-catching fiesta. We think the collection will be a big hit on our shores as the perfect match to the black abaya. The collection is now available at Loewe, Villaggio Mall.

CHANEL LE LIFT

In a bold new range of anti-aging cream, Chanel aims for women to take control of their skin again. And when Chanel does it, be sure it is a power-packed formula backed by the latest scientific breakthrough for the ultimate beauty solution. Le Lift, available in three textures, Fine, Crème and Crème Riche, aims to regenerate skin tissues daily to smooth out deep wrinkles and define facial contour. The cream is highly individualised to different needs, and the velvety rich touch makes it such a fun experience to use. Chanel Beauty is at Salam Studio & Stores.

CRUCIANI C LEATHER COLLECTION

It is a play of vibrant colours this coming spring, and Cruciani C’s leather goods collection is rising to the occasion. The range includes mini cross body bags, evening clutches and a top handle on-thego bag. The design and colours are young and energetic but it is no compromise on quality as the bags are crafted from top leathers including the Saffiano textured leather and stingray-print skin.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND X NEW ERA

Putting the cool back into caps, New Era has collaborated with the edgy British label House of Holland in a range of headwear that is so chic, we want to wear it with all our resort outfits. Inspired by Henry Holland’s visits to Mexico and California, the designs combine tattoo-motifs, tropical and acidic prints presented in silk woven jacquards and lace trims with leather and crystal embellishments. The very street cool caps are now available on Net A Porter, starting from QR208.

ST DUPONT X KARL LAGERFELD KALIFORNIA LOVING

The uber-chic Parisian brand Kenzo has launched Kalifornia, a new handbag that is inspired by the brand’s designers Humberto and Carol’s homeland, Southern California. The soft, deconstructed design is punctuated by two “K” and zip details flanking either side of the bag that double as pockets. Inside the contrast colour interior, the bag features multiple pockets – a great utility feature to make it easy for us women to find our stuff. The bag is available in biker black and racer red.

Of course we are fans of the Kaiser, and nothing can be more exciting than stylish tech gadgets that we carry with us all day. St Dupont first collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld in 2011 starting off with pens and now on to ingenious hi-tech writing instruments. The latest collection is for the digital girl on the go, a lacquered traditional ballpoint pen which also functions as a stylus for touch screen gadgets. The set also includes an optic white lacquered USB key with an 8GB capacity. The Dupont lacquer finish is highlighted with palladium strips and shiny red cornelian stones, and each item bears the iconic silhouette of Lagerfeld. St Dupont is located at Royal Plaza Mall.

It was a daring dress and while critics did not love her choice, we do applaud Sandra Bullock for picking an unconventional red-carpet number. The colour-blocking frock is from Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2014 collection and would seem more appropriate for a society do than a showbiz event. The gown, featuring a voluminous silk v-neck, with sweet pastel panels of baby pink and blue, would best be paired with a simple pair of black pumps and minimal accessories. The dress is now available for pre-order on Moda Operandi for QR36,365.

CAPTAIN

Just looking at Marc Jacob’s Resort 2014 campaign makes us want to curl up in comfort and forget about the rest of the world. The collection was highly influenced by the nautical theme, a trend that has been popping up across several designer releases. Marc Jacobs presented an entirely relaxed sailor suit silhouette that seems to be an ode to his obsession with pajamas. Cropped striped tops with seafaring pants and even a navy uniform-inspired scarf thrown in for the full bon voyage experience. Reinterpret this style into your wardrobe starting off with a structured navy blazer and then incorporating striped tops like this very chic hoodie jacket from Valentino.

MARC JACOBS SENT A GORGEOUS RED AND WHITE PRINT JACKET WITH TASSEL DETAILS DOWN THE RUNWAY FOR AW 2013, AND MAY WE SUGGEST IT BE THE OVERCOAT YOU SHOULD HANG ON TO THIS SEASON.

It may seem a bit daunting to pull off an all white outfit especially when it is not always a forgiving shade. The key is to play with different texture and fabric materials to find one that suits the look you are aiming for. Actress Jaimie Alexander rocks an all-white ensemble in a dress by Osman at the British Fashion Council Style Suites Party. The cut-out pattern gives an illusion of curves to the otherwise very slender actress. SKIRTING

IT

It has all been about the flounce in recent seasons and we could not be more thrilled at the feminine silhouette that truly flatters every shape. The trick is to find the right length to suit your body type. If you have long legs, the knee-length flounce will just fall perfectly and if you have a longer body, we highly recommend an asymmetrical hem to create the height illusion.

PARTY

When we first laid eyes on the complete look book of Peter Pilotto’s collaboration with US retailer Target, it was like déjà vu. The collection rang true of the brand’s greatest design moments, all captured and redefined for a new market in its Target collaboration. If there is one thing that we have learnt from high-low design partnerships is that sometimes the marketing gimmick outshines the aesthetics of the actual collection. But in this case, we are jovially waiting for it to drop in stores. The collection, a complete wardrobe of dresses, separates, swimwear, shoes and bags, is vacation-ready for those looking to escape the winter chills. There is much to love, the label’s design aesthetics are gorgeously presented and the signature psychedelic graphic print just blends seamlessly into the silhouettes. “This is a pivotal moment for our brand. Our collection for Target embodies the elegance and spirit of our own line, but makes it accessible to everyone,” says one of half of the design duo, Christopher De Vos. The collection will be available from February 9 on Target.com and Net A Porter for us shopping from the Middle East.

WHEN HER COLLECTIONS FIRST HIT THE GLOBAL MARKET FIVE YEARS AGO, THE FASHION WORLD KNEW SOMETHING BIG HAD HAPPENED. ETHEREAL GRAPHIC PRINTS OF JUST ABOUT ANYTHING FROM JEWELLERY TO TOURIST LANDMARKS ADORN THE CANVAS OF PRECISE SCULPTURAL SILHOUETTES.

was bold, and it had never been done before. It was the defining debut for Mary Katrantzou. Her meteoric rise and her young age are what everybody is talking about but it is her perspective-altering collections that we most admire. Mary has won over new fans who would wear prints only if they are made by her label, in their otherwise predominantly block colour wardrobes. And here on the home front, the appeal of the sharp colours is evident; her pieces always sell out when they first hit stores. We get the 101 from the Greek designer on her latest Resort 2014 collection. Where did your love for print come from? Print is evocative. The way in which you place print on to a silhouette can allow the eye to perceive something different, particularly when it communicates a story. I’m appreciative of all prints, but it is the way they can be manipulated to enhance a woman’s confidence and allow her to communicate more about her aesthetic. Tell us about your design process. At the beginning of the design process, my initial ideas tend to stem from a visual image which we then expand upon in terms of researching materials and silhouettes. But it is important to recognise that it is a dual process; one cannot work without the other. Print and silhouette work in sync together, and by pairing the classic with the modern it offers a curated angle. How does your Greek background influence your work? We adored the postage-stamp inspired prints in your previous collection, but does it have a continual influence? Greece is a beautiful country and my upbringing had an influence over my initial desire to study Architecture and my sense of balance and symmetry. Growing up in Greece has influenced my way of thinking. I admire the solidity of Greek structural design, which manifests itself in the clean, modern silhouettes I favour. Its influence is innate, but my inspiration is constantly evolving. What about your education at the prestigious Central Saint Martins that still informs your design process? The decision to complete my BA in Textile Design stemmed from an early interest in applied design. Whilst at CSM I became heavily interested in how printed textiles can change the shape of a woman’s body. I discovered that print can be just as definitive as a cut or a drape, and chose to explore this further and refine my technique during my MA course. As such the skills and techniques I developed during my time at CSM are what define my collections now.

After so many seasons of bright, graphic colour, you took a distinctly different direction this season. Tell us about your current collection, where did the inspiration for the darker and moodier graphics come from? I think that sometimes you need to strip back the palette to appreciate the beauty of a print. The landscapes of my AW 13 collection are dark and mysterious, yet there is a definite whimsical, almost romantic, feel to them. Again it is about creating a balance; in pairing down colour you are able to further explore shape and silhouette. I think it is important as a designer to constantly evolve which is why this season we chose a difference direction. Your collaboration with Topshop was hugely successful; do you hope to work on more collaborative projects such as that moving forward? Collaborations are a great opportunity to combine two creative visions and see how each other works. The support which Topshop has given me from the very beginning made the success of our collaboration that much more rewarding. Collaborations with Moncler and Current/ Elliot have allowed me to explore new avenues that I hadn’t ever touched upon. In terms of upcoming projects we are currently working on a huge collaboration, which I am very excited about and can’t wait to see the end results. You’ve had an incredible career trajectory, with a huge appreciation for your work early on. Even though you’re such a young designer, can you tell us what your career highlight would be so far? I think to be given the support of the British Fashion Council through their NewGen scheme for over six seasons was a fantastic achievement as a new designer. But a highlight for me was when I was awarded the Swiss Textiles Award in 2010. It was an honour to be nominated alongside some incredible designers and it is an achievement that I am immensely proud of. Tell us about your design ethos and philosophy – who do you design for? Is there a particular woman or lifestyle that you design for? Print should not exclude, age or shape isn’t a factor when it comes to my designs. I design clothes to be worn and admired; taking inspiration from filtered beauty, which I myself am inspired by. The Katrantzou woman is confident and assured, never letting the print wear her.

ART IN FASHION BY DEBRINA ALIYAH

FASHION AND ART IS INCREASINGLY BECOMING INTERTWINED IN BRIGHT VISUAL WAYS, PROGRESSING FROM JUST HINTS OF SUBTLE INSPIRATIONS TO FABRICS OF EXACT GRAPHIC PRINTS OF ARTWORKS.

FASHION

and art are increasingly becoming intertwined in bright visual ways, progressing from just hints of subtle inspirations to fabrics of exact graphic prints of artworks. It is a natural association between these two forms, as fashion has long been viewed as art. This resort season, the block colour print world of legendary artist Josef Albers comes to life in a special capsule collection by Roksanda Ilincic. The capsule collection, available exclusively on Net A Porter, is a ten-piece special collaborative venture with The Albers Foundation. Dresses, separates and silk gowns adorned with the unique signature Albers colour block print form a collection perfect for the minimalist dresser or the discerning Albers art fan. Roksanda, one of the new waves of design stars from London, has captivated fans including Kate Middleton and Michelle Obama with her simple classic silhouettes. The designer tells us about bringing Albers vision into her work. Your exclusive capsule Cruise 2014 collection for Net-a-Porter.com is inspired by the work of legendary artist Josef Albers. How did you translate his Bauhaus aesthetic into the pieces? I have long been a fan of the work of Josef Albers and his extraordinary way with colour, so this formed the inspiration of the collaboration. His work has such great impact, created using

minimal yet powerful techniques and shapes. Tell us about the bright palette and use of colour-blocking. I have always loved colour, and the way that different colours can be contrasted. Albers had such an eye for interesting combinations, so this is something I have tried to reflect in the collection. This collection is more minimal than some of your other designs, what was your inspiration? Often working with such vibrant colours lends my designs to have more simple silhouettes and clean lines. When you envision the Roksanda Ilincic woman, where do you see her wearing these pieces? To me the most important thing is that a woman feels confident, in any occasion. It is always interesting to see how women play with the usual rules; wearing eveningwear in the daytime, and more casual wear to a party. You’ve been showing at London Fashion Week since 2005. How does the fashion landscape in London differ from other cities?

A painting of US artist Ad Reinhardt at the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop, western Germany, on September 24, 2010. The motifs are drawn from inspiration of Josef Albers which can be seen in Roksanda’s Cruise 2014 collection.

It has been such an exciting time for London and its designers recently. More and more international people are taking interest in the city and what we are producing. The city is so fast paced and evolving, it is hard not to be influenced by the surroundings. What drew you to fashion design? From time to time my mother used to have special dresses made for her. She would bring the fabric off cuts home, which would inspire me to think of all the wonderful things I could create; so it has always been something I was drawn to. You studied Architecture before earning your masters degree in womenswear at Central St Martins. Do you have an architectural approach to design? I have always been drawn to the study of space and shapes and this definitely reflects in my minimal design aesthetic. What did you enjoy the most when you were here in the Middle East? I was lucky enough to travel there last year. The vibrancy of the region is amazing, I love being able to take in new cultures and I got to meet some really fantastic people.

THE COLLABORATION The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation partnered with international Roksanda Ilincic on this special art meets fashion project which first came to life as an art installation in Mayfair, London in October 2013. The installation was held at 9, Mount Street, the future venue of Roksanda’s first flagship store that will open this year. “The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation is thrilled to collaborate with Roksanda, whose eye and sense of colour and aesthetic values are remarkably of a piece with the vision of Josef Albers. Roksanda exemplifies not just the approach of the Bauhaus, an attitude of artistic anonymity, an emphasis on functionality alongside true style but she specifically shows the reverence for clarity and the openness to the power of colour and line, that were essential to Josef’s Albers way of seeing and to all of his creation,” said Nicholas Fox Weber, Executive Director of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Speaking about the store opening, the designer said, “Opening our first store is a huge milestone for me. It is crucial that it is here in London, and this incredible Mount Street site is the perfect location. The store will be the home for the brand in more ways than one, and will be the ideal space for my vision for the label to be fully realised.”

SHE

was the sneaker-wearing bride who closed the recent Chanel Spring Summer 2014 Haute Couture show and that is some spunk that only Cara Delevingne can pull off. Known for her fun-loving and party-animal streak, the supermodel may be living life, la dolce vita but when it comes to acing campaigns and catwalks, she is dead serious about her job. What are your staple wardrobe denim pieces? Definitely skinny jeans, and if I’m feeling jazzy then maybe I’ll wear double denim. Which item in your closet would you save first in case of fire? Definitely my leather jacket. How has modelling changed your life? I now know a lot more about fashion. I have a lot more clothes, beautiful clothes, and I have made some special friends and travelled a lot. What do you like most about your job? Travelling, the people I meet and the people I work with. You are featured in lots of different fashion shoots, wearing high end designers to high street, describe your own personal style. I’m a Tomboy by day, and for the red carpet I pick a character and project that person. I can wear anything and feel alright if I can make that part work. What advice do you have for other aspiring models? Don’t let people knock you down, keep grounded and be happy and have a great agent - and have a good relationship with them. Who are some of your favourite models and why? Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and also Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy - all very iconic and individual. What do you think distinguishes a good model from a bad one? It’s not just about looking pretty, it’s about capturing the character that the client wants, it’s about being a chameleon. What’s the best style lesson you’ve ever learned? I’m still learning and I like to be myself. If you could choose a century to live in, which one would it be and which role would you like to play in it? Coco Chanel, Cleopatra, Mary Queen of Scots (without the

beheading) or Joan of Arc. I would love to play all of them in films. Who is you favourite fashion icon? Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung. What have you been wearing this SS? I’ve been wearing really light blue jeans, but I love any coloured jeans. I would love some multi-coloured jeans. What makes your heart beat faster - acting, modelling or playing the drums? Any more hidden talents? I love to sing, and obviously playing the drums makes my heart beat loud, it’s incredibly physical. Playing Anna Karenina was probably the best days of my career and made me want to do a lot more acting. With this in mind who are currently your favourite music artists/ bands and what is your all-time favourite movie? True Romance, Rihanna, Azealia Banks, also a lot of my friends are great musicians and I love Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Lauren Hill. Being so young, and working in the same industry as your sister, is she your role model? Who is the one that gives better advice to the other? Do you enjoy working together? I always look up to Poppy, she’s always there for me giving me the best advice. I couldn’t have done so much without her. Which fashion job would you love to get? Chanel cosmetics! And I would love to design my own range of T-shirts, really beautiful and simple T-shirts. I love them and wear them all the time and I can never find really plain ones. The devil is in the detail. Where do you see yourself in five years? Living on a desert island catching fish and growing vegetables... and also with a couple of albums and some movies under my belt! How did it feel having been the face of Pepe Jeans London’s 40th anniversary collection? I’m very happy having been part of the team, considering the line-up before me. Alexa and Sienna are also great friends of mine. Shooting the campaign was great. I worked with Josh Olins who is brilliant and lovely, I loved the whole team so much, they are all brilliant.

RIMMEL YOUR

EYES By DEBRINA ALIYAH

WITH A FOREVER YOUNG MARKETING APPROACH THAT IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING, IT IS EASY TO FORGET THAT RIMMEL, THE GLOBAL BEAUTY BRAND, HAS A 180-YEAR-OLD HISTORY. NOT ONLY HAS IT EMERGED AS ONE OF THE HIPPEST BEAUTY LABELS IN TODAY’S MARKET, IT WAS ALSO A PIONEER IN MANY BEAUTY AND HEALTH BREAKTHROUGHS DURING THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

C

ommemorating the 180th anniversary of the brand, Rimmel recently threw a big birthday bash at the London Film Museum in Covent Garden, a stone’s throw away from Rimmel’s original headquarters at the Strand in the 1860s. Staying true to the energetic spirit of the brand, it was a fun extravaganza that was graced by London’s party icons Kate Moss and Georgia May Jagger. Kate has been the brand’s icon for the past decade, bringing together the brand’s English heritage and the modern British attitude represented by the supermodel. And what better way to welcome the next chapter in Rimmel’s history? A collaboration with the new British IT girl, Rita Ora on their next colour collection, of course. The clever modern marketing strategy is reflective of the brand’s founder’s approach towards advertising. In the late 19th century, Eugene Rimmel was known to frequently advertise Rimmel’s products through theatre programmes. Eugene was ahead of his time, in adopting this method as well as producing mailorder catalogues, to spread the word about his new offerings. At this point, the perfumer was already the holder of ten royal warrants from heads of state all over Europe (including Queen Victoria) for his perfumes and fragranced products. The legacy of Rimmel began in 1820 when Eugene’s father was invited to London to manage a perfumery on Bond Street. The move to London was such a success that when Eugene was 14, the father and son team founded their own perfumery, The House of Rimmel. As the business grew, Eugene, who had apprenticed under his father, began to demonstrate an innovative talent in developing new products that were considered cutting-edge at the time. By the age of 24, he had already mastered his father’s perfumery expertise and began dabbling in the art of cosmetics. He experimented with fragrance and colour and frequently travelled around the world

to discover new ingredients that were not native to England or France. It was his innovation in personal hygiene products that really sealed his name in the industry. He was a pioneer in introducing products such as mouth rinses, fragranced pomades, and scented steam vapourisers. These unique new products drew the attention of high society who were regular clients at his Regent Street flagship perfumery and were big fans of Rimmel’s exquisitely packaged perfumes, soaps and bath essences. In 1865, Eugene published The Book of Perfume, a scientific and practical guide to perfumery which still remains relevant in today’s studies on the art. After Eugene passed away in 1887, his two sons inherited the Rimmel Empire and they began developing products that focused on the enhancement of the eyes. Along with an extensive colour line for eyeshadows, the duo also created the world’s first toxic-free mascara. The mascara became such an international phenomenon that the world ‘Rimmel’ has become a slang to refer to mascara in countries like Turkey to this day. After the Second World War, Rimmel was acquired by Robert and Rose Caplin, the owners of a London advertising agency. The Caplins, capitalising on the new wave of Hollywood heroines becoming beauty icons for women worldwide, expanded and modernised the brand’s cosmetics range. Rimmel is today owned by Coty Inc.

Rimmel is today a Brit-centric beauty brand, with its motto ‘Get The London Look.’

MODERN DAY RIMMEL Rimmel is today a Brit-centric beauty brand, with its motto ‘Get The London Look.’ Celebrating its milestone anniversary, the London Cool campaign was launched in a retrospective through fashion, make-up, video and music. The brand’s heritage was brought to life through a stunning fashion show involving 18 models representing 18 iconic looks from 1834 to 2014, including Brit beauty Georgia May Jagger, who showcased the ‘70s Studio 54 style. To perfectly capture the eye-catching essence of each era, all of the make-up looks were created by Rimmel’s international make-up artist, Kirstin Piggott.

BLING IS IN SEASON MODA KEY RESORT COLLECTION

MODA KEY WAS ONE OF THE PIONEERING MULTIBRAND BOUTIQUES IN DOHA, A WELL-LOVED DESTINATION FOR FASHION INSIDERS LOOKING FOR TRENDS FROM THE EAST.

“This collection was designed when I first moved to Bali and I stayed in a magical villa called Villa Orchid, which was full of orchids in calming pink lavender and baby pink colours”

everal years after its inception, founder Latifa Al Medaihki took a big leap turning Moda Key into a design label of its own. Though the boutique is now sorely missed, we readily welcome the brand’s first Resort 2014 collection with open arms. The collection is a refreshing new dimension to the current design offerings in Qatar and aptly so, as it was inspired by the tranquil island of Bali in Java. A graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar, Latifa has always been a trendsetter defying the norms of her peers. She had a sense of style that was ahead of her time, and was dogmatic about introducing new fashion ideas and concepts to Qatar. The petite designer mixes a bout of grunge and rock and roll in her dressing, a sartorial representative of her strong personality. So it was really no surprise when she hopped on a plane to a farflung destination to find inspiration for Moda Key. “This collection was designed when I first moved to Bali and I stayed in a magical villa called Villa Orchid, which was full of orchids in calming pink lavender and baby pink colours,” she says. From orchids comes a dazzling line of dresses, with a strong focus on textile embellishments, referencing the twenties Gatsby-era. “I took the classical cuts and patterns of the twenties and brought them to modern day. It has to be time appropriate, of course.”

“The Moda Key piece is a redcarpet show stopper. The Moda Key woman is a free-spirited individual who can carry bling without looking tacky”

asing herself in Bali has opened up production possibilities to achieve her design aesthetics that otherwise would have been difficult in Qatar. One of the key strengths of her collection is that all the fabrics were developed specifically for her designs. “I work a lot with embellishments and this allowed me the creative freedom of expression in my own fabrics. Plus, I get to experiment with different techniques of beading,” she explains. In the Resort 2014 collection, which Latifa says is the inauguration of Moda Key’s design essence, the embellishments and fabrics accentuate the pieces. It introduces the high glamour aesthetics of the brand marrying simple classic cuts with big doses of bling. “The Moda Key piece is a red-carpet show stopper. The Moda Key woman is a free-spirited individual who can carry bling without looking tacky,” she says. The Moda Key collection will be available online and will be sold via distribution channels in Asia and the Middle East.

RUSSIAN

supermodel Sasha Pivovarova is the heroine of the perfume’s new ad campaign about a woman who falls head over heels in love. Interplaying between reality and fantasy, the campaign was shot by Norwegian filmmaker Dusan Reljin highlighting the signature inspirations of Lolita Lempicka that emphasises nature and originality. GLAM catches up with Sasha who tells us why fragrance plays an important part in completing a woman’s style. What’s the significance of a scent in a beauty regimen? I believe your scent completes your look, so I always use perfume before I leave the house. A women’s scent is her deadliest weapon. What do you envisage when you smell Elle L’aime? Whenever I smell Elle L’aime, I imagine a carnal bouquet of white flowers. It’s such a beautifully light and natural scent, so it is perfect for the daytime to brighten up your day. What kind of woman are Lolita Lempicka perfumes perfect for? Lolita Lempicka’s fragrances are created to celebrate femininity and love. They’re perfect scents for beautiful, happy women, who love their lives and what they do. Most women have a strong connection to the first fragrance they used, what’s your first resounding memory of a scent? I think most girls would agree their first memories of a fragrance relate back to their mothers, that scent will always be special to you. Discovering a new perfume is almost like discovering a delicious new desert that immediately becomes your new favourite thing. What’s been one of the biggest highlights of your career? Every day is a highlight of my career. Every time I open a magazine and I see new editorials or adverts I get a sense of pride. Modeling, much like acting,

is a provisional profession and many aren’t lucky enough to make it as far as I have, and for that I am sincerely grateful. It’s a satisfying feeling to see all your determination, dedication and ambition result in success. I’m truly blessed. What are your favourite scents in a perfume? My favourite scents would have to be the subtle smell of jasmine; the delicious coconut flower, the clean smell of lime and aromatic notes of myrrh. You have beautiful skin, can you share your must have skincare products? I have so many products my bathroom cabinet is overflowing, some of my must haves are; coconut oil, Embryollisse cream, Shu Uemura moisturising masks, lip balm, Chanel makeup remover and Bioderma. When it comes to makeup, what are your essentials? I’m not really big on using a lot of makeup, so I tend to only carry a few essentials. In my line of work, I constantly have make up on, so I like to keep it light and natural for my off-duty look. My essentials are; YSL Touché Éclat, Lancôme Mascara, Chanel and Armani base and lip balm. What does an average 24 hours in your life look like? An average day for me starts fairly early as I like to get in my workout and morning shower before I have breakfast with my daughter Mia. I then usually head to work, which would consist of a few hours of preparation for hair and makeup, and then shooting would take place over lunch with the team and carry on for the rest of the day. I always try to keep a healthy balance between my work and my family life, as I’m a working mum. So after my shoots I spend my evenings playing with Mia, then I either read a book or work on my art.

I had experienced the comfort of the Club and Suite almost a year ago and can willingly vouch for its comforts, this meeting in early January was a reintroduction to the facilities. And a good time for me to recount my experience at the Club facility. And while I have earlier recited my bias towards the Ritz brand because of the friends I have cultivated there, I am entirely unbiased when I recount the comforts I enjoyed. The Club Lounge is an experience that is far beyond just a stay in a hotel. If it needs to be compared, I would say it is more like living in the comforts of an inn, where you are put at ease by the friendly staff and the homeliness of the surroundings. The surroundings are plush, as you would expect any Ritz facility to be, but with added warmth and a personalised service that is the Club facility trademark. For me, the Ritz Club and Suite experience came with an added note. A note that I still keep with me as a souvenir. A hand-written note from Hoss Vetry, the Cluster General Manger of the Ritz Carlton Doha, welcoming me to “my home away from my home”. There are 61 spacious suites with a separate living room, bedroom, bathroom and a private balcony. There are four categories: Junior, Executive, Amiri and Grand Amiri, each suite embodied in warm modern-themed interiors. The advantage of being a Club member is having a keyed entry to the elevators and to your rooms and

having the Club Lounge on the top floor for private check-ins. It is almost like living in your own home with a group of friendly staff who take away all the chores that come with living on our own. With a separate entry to the Club facilities that is still within the hotel is best described as intimacy and privacy at the best. The complimentary access to the Club Lounge includes use of the Club meeting room, a selection of guests’ favourite beverages at the bar and continuous culinary offerings served throughout the day. The view from the 24th floor of the Ritz is one to die for. Tranquil and soothing with the glimmering lights on the horizon, the Club Lounge is an ideal setting for someone who loves that bit of privacy even when he or she is travelling. And that, says Vetry, is what the Ritz is banking on, “because the Club Lounge has garnered repute from its international and almost frequent regional traveller”. With the Qatar Tourism Authority pointing out the high numbers of regional visitors to the country, the Ritz is surely in for more business. This year the Club Lounge will also have some complimentary Spa promotions added to its offering. My 10-minute massage was an initiation into this new offer and I highly recommend this small but intense massage that drove out the exhaustion in my bones. “With a personal Chef de Cuisine and dedicated concierge, the Ritz Carlton Club Lounge is at the avant-garde of service excellence in Qatar,” says Vetry. Beginning this year, announced Vetry, the guests staying at the Club level can enjoy a special privilege of getting an additional complimentary night for a minimum stay of two nights with the “Treat You” package at a starting rate of QR1,915 per night(the rate includes airport transfer). Though the rates are on the higher side, for those who just don’t want to take any chances when it comes to luxury and service while on business travel, this Club Lounge offer from Ritz Carlton is worth a try.

yourself with your loved one in a romantic setting, ready to unwind to celebrate your love and to remember how good you feel when you are together! A couple’s massage is a great idea to help you with relaxation, reducing stress, releasing muscles tension and letting go of all the bad energy to leave you renewed and refreshed! Remember how you feel at the end of a massage? Just imagine your loved one feeling the same way and being able to enjoy it together, what better gift than that for Valentine’s Day? Sometimes, the daily routine settles in and between work and family you don’t always find the time to just enjoy each other company, which is why this is the perfect opportunity to do something relaxing, to pamper each other, and to indulge together. Valentine’s Day is here to remind you that if you did not have time before, the time is now! A couple’s massage will allow you and your significant other to let go of all the stress, to wipe away all the bad energies and to bring balance back to you both. It will help you reconnect with each other and turn your attention to the present moment. After the massage, the first thing you do will be to check on your loved one to see how he or she is feeling, isn’t that selflessness? It’s not about falling in love again but more about remembering why you fell in love with each other. But remember one thing; you do not have to wait for Valentine’s Day to enjoy a couple’s massage. Anytime of the year is a good time to show your loved one that you care about them. Plus there is no hard and fast rule that a couple’s massage is only for couples. relax together: your BFF that you haven’t been able to see in a few weeks, your mum when you are going back home, your daughter for her birthday, your sister when she comes to visit you, any occasion is a good one! REDEFINING VALENTINE’S We really should spend more time with people we care about but sometimes we are too busy, then we are not in the mood and time is flying by without noticing. Because in our modern life, everything is pressuring us to go always faster and do more and more but if you continue in this way without ever stopping, you will burn out because no one can do that for a long time. And sleeping 8hrs a night now and then is not enough anymore to recharge your battery… So if you can let go for a while with someone you love, whoever that might be, you will then remember how it is important to cherish life and the people close to you! Now, if you do not have the budget or the time or you just don’t want to be stuck in traffic during a day off then just stay home and relax together or even by yourself. Turn off all electronic devices, yes you read me well! Cut yourself from the world for a few hours to be alone, it is essential to reconnect so no cellphone, no TV, no laptop, no tablet, nothing but you. Prepare some hot ginger tea mixed with honey, which is really good for this season, and relax on the couch with your favorite blanket, light on a perfumed candle and enjoy the moment. Or take a warm bath with some rose petals for the mood and some rosewater for the senses. Close your eyes and just appreciate the time passing by slowly. Silence is important in these moments to really focus on yourself or on each other and nothing else. Some might already be reticent or laughing by reading this but try at least once and you’ll see how calming and soothing it can be. That’s all we need to reconnect with ourselves or with each other, we need to unplug once in a while. It seems easy for you? Then turn off your phones right now and enjoy the calmness.

THE EASY WAY OUT BY SINDHU NAIR

THE VLCC PROGRAMME IS FOR THOSE WHO WANT FAST AND EASY SOLUTIONS TO WEIGHT LOSS.

IT

is that time of the year when we start jotting down our New Year resolutions. I had stopped this task a long time ago having realised this is but a futile attempt at changing intrinsic habits, but for those who do keep to this tradition, the weight loss commitment would surely be top of the list. For people like them and for the few like me who do not keep resolutions but still hope to lose the extra flab around the abdomen, here is an easy solution. A non-invasive, scientific approach to weight loss without even the intense workout! It seemed like God had finally heard all our prayers. Well, I learnt it was not God but VLCC, who had this power. VLCC is said to have revolutionised the wellness industry acquiring the status of being the Number 1 Wellness Brand across South Asia, South East Asia and the Middle East, with a presence in over 300 locations across 121 cities and 16 countries. They are widely recognised for their scientific weight loss solutions and therapeutic approach to beauty treatments. When VLCC approached us to test their latest technology, the excitement in the team was palpable. But being the editor comes with certain advantages, which I use to advantage when needed... So I headed to the VLCC centre that was close to our office, near the C-ring road. With a central location and extremely pleasant and spacious office setting, VLCC seemed to have scored on the most important points; location and ambience. According to Sheena Madan, Manger, VLCC, Slimsonic is the only aesthetic system worldwide to incorporate the revolutionary Core technology for achieving instant weight loss, cellulite reduction, body contouring and skin tightening. After the initial physical measurements of height and weight and in my case the arm dimensions as the machine was being used on that physical attribute only, I was taken to the room for my treatment. It has to be mentioned here that since I had earlier session at the VLCC I can vouch for the fact that hygiene and aesthetics are two attributes were always a part of VLCC. The centre was in its peak of activity, all rooms occupied and an informal session of abdomen crunches and exercises being imparted by one of the VLCC officials and followed hastily by the patients. As the official explained, the patented Channelling Optimised Radio Frequency (CORE(tm)) Technology involves the gentle heating of the skin’s underlying network of collagen and elastin fibres to shrink fat cell volume, reduce lumpy skin, and improve skin texture. In addition to enhancing blood circulation, the treatment also helps eliminate stretch marks and reduce lax skin on the tummy, underarms, hips and calves.

EXPERIENCE / 85

I was not a bit optimistic but the results after measurement showed that I had lost a total of 3cm, which was not great but not so bad too considering the effort I put in was zilch. Since the point of this test was my arms, I went through a small procedure that was the least troublesome, moderate to slightly high but bearable heat and pressure on different points on the arm. I even had a small nap in the comforts of the room with the gentle hum of the machine providing a soothing background score. Explaining the process, the official says that the revolutionary Core technology incorporates a multi-frequency channeling system with vacuum therapy for acute precision targeting and broader dermal penetration of radio frequency energy to deliver visible results from the first session. Promising results that involve losing up to 6 kgs and 10 inches in six weeks, depending on individual body type, Slimsonic treatment can help body attain that firm and toned appearance. With just one 45-minute session, I was not a bit optimistic but the results after measurement showed that I had lost a total of 3cm, which was not great but not so bad too considering the effort I put in was zilch. The non-invasive and painless Slimsonic treatment has been clinically proven and gained comprehensive clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The revolutionary therapy has also attracted the support of doctors and clinical researchers worldwide. The majority who come to VLCC are from the Indian and the Arab continents. Sheena cautions that for the treatment to show its maximum results, it has to be followed with exercise and dietary charts, both of which are provided by VLCC with an inhouse dietician and a small gym at the facility. Well, everything is not as rosy as it sounds...

MODEL OF THE MONTH Shot by Rob Altamirano Makeup and Hair by Blanca Montenegro

LARISA VELIC

21-year-old Larisa moved to Qatar a year ago with husband, Deni Velic, who plays for the Qatar handball team Al Quiyada. Before she started modelling, Larisa helped out with the family business back home in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Now, she is an exclusive model with Trinity Talent Qatar.

DREAMER

I’ve always wanted to be a model since I was a little girl, but I’ve never had the courage to pursue it. My family and husband kept encouraging me to try, so I decided to do some research and found Trinity, which is helping me grow as a model and live my dream.

STARTING OUT

My first modelling job was on runway and I was extremely nervous. But after I was done I felt really great and confident. It was the same with my first photo shoot; I needed a lot of direction, but after a while I felt like a real professional, like I had been doing this for a long time.

PERSONAL STYLE

I don’t think I have a specific style. I dress according to the occasion so what I wear depends on that. But I adore high heels, even though I’m tall.

AMBITION

My favourite models are Adrianna Lima and Candice Swanepoel, because they are beautiful and confident. I want to work for big brands in the future, like Chanel, Dior and Versace. I would like to do some sports modelling as well.

ADVICE

My advice for aspiring models is to do their best to achieve their goals and not to give up if they run into obstacles. It is important to build their confidence every day. Also above all, to finish school because education is important. For more information: www.trinityqatar.com
