BRICKBATS To GLAM,
2012 always starts off with the same promises. I insist I’m going to eat healthier and visit the gym more often. Yet I always struggle to maintain these things. However, with help of Nicole Van Hattem’s tips on how to get on track and stay on track, I think life is going to be a whole lot easier. Thanks Nicole! Lama Sajeen
GLAM, I really enjoyed your article about the hair and make-up guru Jenny Schoenmann. When I learned she has pampered the likes of Brad Pitt and Enrique Iglesias, I was so jealous. It’s my ultimate dream to meet those two men! I think a career change is in order so I can make my dreams rubbing shoulders with celebs come true! Sarah Howard
GLAM Fashion! Cool ‘Winter Prints’ fashion shoot GLAM magazine! The clothes were really beautiful and I’m so pleased that there’s a huge selection of high-end, lust-worthy brands available in Doha. Keep showcasing all those gorgeous pieces. Noor Almeera
Hello, I completely sympathise with the story about trying to lose weight in this country, or ‘dropping the Doha dozen’ as it is referred to. Since I came here last June, I’ve found myself increasingly ordering fizzy drinks and being distracted by the wealth of fast food options available in the city. Thank goodness for the amount of fun fitness classes, I just need to keep the motivation up. Nice to know I’m not the only one struggling! Angiezska Stam
Greetings GLAM! It puzzles me why so many girls want to use skin whitening treatments. I think people should be comfortable in their own skin, whatever their colour, and be grateful for what they’ve got, rather than focusing on what they don’t. Girls, always remember that beauty comes from within. Marta Salanzo
Hey GLAM, Victoria Beckham has come a long way in the fashion field indeed, so it was nice to see you toasting her in your last issue for her achievement at the prestigious British Fashion awards. She really is an icon; I especially love her collection of mesmerising clothing and ever so cute baby daughter Harper. Elaine Gratan 16 / FEBRUARY 2012

Mary Katrantzou teams with Longchamp for Eastern-inspired totes
R
ising London-based designer Mary Katrantzou has collaborated with French label Longchamp for a collection of Eastern-influenced handbags. Designed with the vision “When East meets West”, the line continues Katrantzou’s signature patterned aesthetic, and includes an array of totes adorned in Easterninspired motifs such as orchids and paper lanterns. Longchamp, whose previous design partners include British model Kate Moss, have chosen well with their latest collaboration as Katrantzou is currently one of London’s biggest emerging fashion talents. The Greek-born creator, whose fan base includes model Alexa Chung and fashion editor Anna Dello Russo, was announced Emerging Talent Ready-to-Wear winner at the British Fashion Awards back in November. She is becoming a dab hand at collaborations too; a 14-piece collection of dresses by Katrantzou for British high street retailer Topshop will be released this February. 20 / FEBRUARY 2012
ouis Vuitton has collaborated with Yayoi Kusama on a series of products including leather goods, ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, watches and jewellery. WWD reports the French fashion house’s artistic director Marc Jacobs worked with the Japanese artist on the range, which hits Louis Vuitton boutiques early July. Special window installations based on Kusama’s unique aesthetic are also scheduled. The artist is best known for her interest in polka dots, which she has famously applied to tree trunks, entire rooms and even people. The collaboration ties in with a major retrospective of Kusama’s work which hits London’s Tate Modern February 9 following spells in Rome, Madrid and Paris. Jacobs has collaborated with contemporary artists such as Richard Prince and Takashi Murakami in the past, and in 2009 a range inspired by the late Stephen Sprouse’s motifs such as graffiti prints and roses coincided with a retrospective of the designer and artist at New York gallery Deitch Projects. Louis Vuitton isn’t the only French fashion house with close links to the art world: during last year’s Art Basel Miami Beach fair Christian Dior unveiled an accessories line in partnership with German contemporary artist Anselm Reyle which included wallets and leather handbags in Reyle’s trademark camouflage patterns.

Couture meets rap: Oscar de la Renta teams up with Dr. Dre
T
here have been a string of Oscar de la Renta expansions of late, although the most unexpected comes in the launch of a partnership with rapper Dr. Dre on a pair of lavish designer headphones which double up as earmuffs. Currently featuring on the “new arrivals” section of the Oscar de la Renta website, the fluffy “luxe silver fox” earmuffs surround a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. Retailing at $695, this limited edition item is one of de la Renta’s more extravagant partnerships, compared to the label’s teaming up with US luxury stationery firm Mrs. John L. Strong on items such as note cards, invitations and place cards - the set of 12 place cards featured on the site is selling for a more accessible $50. While de la Renta, which counts rap stars such as Nicki Minaj and Kanye West among its fans, announced the launch of a childrenswear collection for Fall 2012 just last month, the label’s Dre collaboration hints there could be hip-hop themed ventures to come for the ever-expanding brand. Meanwhile, if the idea of headphone earmuffs appeals but the almost $700 price tag doesn’t, there is a cheaper variety available from Los Angeles-based brand Juicy Couture. The label currently offers Fair Isle-print earmuff headphones on its website for a reduced price of $69.99 (originally $98). The designer earmuffs are just one example of how fashion houses are increasingly coming up with unexpected items to adorn with their trademark style: labels Hermes and Jimmy Choo’s luxury coffee-cup holders recently caused a stir in the fashion world thanks to their respective prices of $250 and $165.

Rise of the 1990s supers: Naomi Campbell shines in Cavalli campaign
A
s the Spring 2012 fashion ads come flooding in, Roberto Cavalli’s Steven Meisel-shot campaign highlights the renaissance of the supermodel, with Naomi Campbell taking a starring role alongside Kristen McMenamy, Karen Elson and Daphne Groeneveld. While Groeneveld is 17, Campbell, McMenamy and Elson are all in their 30s and 40s, signaling a stark contrast to fashion’s fascination with teenage models in recent years. Campbell’s presence in particular marks the recent rise of the original supermodel, with the 1990s’ biggest names becoming increasingly prevalent in the past few months. Since appearing in the music video for British band Duran Duran’s single “Girl Panic” alongside fellow supers Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, and Yasmin Le Bon back in November, 41-year-old Campbell has also been unveiled as the face of Italian label Pinko’s Spring 2012 ad campaign, as well as appearing on Harper’s Bazaar UK’s December 2011 issue alongside her video co-stars. Meanwhile, fellow “Girl Panic” super Le Bon was this week announced as the face of Joseph Ribkoff’s Spring 2012 collection. Courtesy afp.relaxnews.com

Haute Couture Highlights Jean Paul Gaultier’s tribute to ‘unique’ Amy Winehouse
T
here is no mistaking the look of the first model at Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture show Wednesday, the beehive hair and thick eyeliner, black skirt and brassiere visible under a white top. “Amy Winehouse was a true style icon,” Gaultier told reporters backstage after a show conceived as a tribute to the soul singer, six months after her untimely death. “What she stands for above all, is uniqueness. Both in music and the way she dressed, she mixed a great many influences to create her style", he said. Playing on the late star’s style, rooted in the 1950s and 1960s, Gaultier sent out corsets – a staple of his – as well as bustiers and layered brassieres, mixing bold colours with black. The French designer took care to keep his tribute subtle – with nothing too literal – and Winehouse’s voice rang out only at the very end, blending with the sound of a cappella band on stage. Top models of the moment Karlie Kloss and Milagros Schmoll dazzled the room wrapped in hooded capes of billowing chiffon, or a suit matching asymmetric jacket and a man’s pinstriped pants – tailored to a woman’s curves. Hand-crafted artistry was on ample display, like in the thousands of pieces of glitter embroidery on a violet-blue coat, worn over a pleated white skirt and plant-green top made entirely from sequins. After the wedding dress – a corset-gown in powder pink – the models returned without their skirts, revealing the sophisticated lingerie underneath, with a black veil over the face like Spanish widows. “It’s not a funeral,” smiled Gaultier afterwards. “They are happy brides.”

The wild side of couture with Iris Van Herpen
P
aris walked the wilder side of haute couture on Monday night as Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen conjured strange, otherworldly creatures inspired by the teeming, invisible world of the microscopic. Showing her second collection as guest member of the exclusive haute couture club, the 27-year-old adorned dresses with organic curves and curled tentacles, created from plexiglas, antique bronze, latex or lampshade fabric. The designer, whose late-evening show in a Paris convent wrapped up the first of three days of couture collections, is known for her use of innovative, computerised design techniques alongside traditional hand-craftsmanship. Her opening thigh-length dress, for instance, had rows of iridescent tentacles snaking down it, made from hundreds of tiny half moons of plexiglas, planned out on a computer, number-coded and hand-stitched onto the garment. “It’s like a big puzzle,” said the designer backstage before the show. Van Herpen – whose fans include the singers Bjork and Lady Gaga – aimed with her spring-summer collection to show the beauty of microscopic organisms, “a beauty that is half way between extraordinary and bizarre.” Models stepped out in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth points to each foot – wearing dresses that suggested even stranger animals. Tiny mini-dresses had intricate motifs fanning out in spirals, made from countless strips of silver fabric – originally lampshade material – or threedimensional panels made from minuscule plexiglas pins. Van Herpen explained backstage that she saw experimenting with new materials and techniques as a vital part of her craft.
D
onatella Versace turned the luxury dial to full throttle Monday, sending out glamorous gladiators dripping with gold and lace as the Italian designer made her comeback to the haute couture club. The Versace Atelier line was the house’s first couture collection following an eight-year hiatus, kicking off three days of spring-summer shows in Paris headlined by such names as Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Givenchy. “She’s a very glamorous warrior,” the tanned, platinum blonde designer told AFP backstage after the show, staged Monday morning on a gold-coloured podium under the frescoes of the historic Beaux Arts school on the banks of the Seine. Opera legend Maria Callas provided the soundtrack as US model of the moment Karlie Kloss stepped out in the first pale water-green dress, sculpted head-to-toe in French lace with scintillating floral embroidery.
Half a dozen models in pale watery green were followed by an explosive sunflower yellow, then gold, fluorescent green and a bright coral orange with perspex embroidery, and gold again for the finale. Dazzling decadence was the watchword, with strips of metal plated with real gold circling the dresses like luxury body armour, around a shoulder, across the back or down the side of the ribs. Sheer floor-length lace and embroidery dresses exposed legs up to the thigh, while short bodysculpting models in lace or leather came with shieldlike plates on the front of stilettos, or reaching up above the knee. “Versace’s woman is sculptured, conscious of her body, and has a taste for futurism,” the designer – herself dressed all in black – told reporters. “And I always have in mind the celebrities.” A-listers who lined up backstage amid the media scrum for the obligatory photo shoot with the designer
included actresses Cameron Diaz, Diane Kruger and Abbie Cornish. “What I love about Donatella Versace’s design is that she nevers forgets she is dressing a woman,” Diaz told AFP afterwards. “I love the architecture of the clothing, and the way it reflects the light.” Likewise, Karlie Kloss, smiling broadly despite her impossibly tight-fitting bodice, insisted: “It feels good! It keeps it all in!” Haute couture is a protected appellation in France, awarded based on strict criteria like the amount of work carried out by hand and in-house, and the share of pieces made to measure. Two dozen houses will be sending out one-off creations over three days of exclusive shows in Paris, their dizzying artistry matched only by their astronomical price tags, with wedding dresses reaching 100,000 euros ($130,000) or more. Katara Style With the powerful voice of Fairuz echoing across the room, the fashion boutique at Katara Art Center exuded a traditional Lebanese aura for the showcase of Lina Hajar’s ‘Hebo’ Collection. The fashion showcase gave attendees an opportunity to learn more about the fashion boutique at Katara, while viewing Lebanese Hajar’s collection, designed exclusively for the event. Hajar designs her beautifully hand-crafted oriental inspired pieces for “very elegant and stylish women who have the audacity to wear such bold designs.” The self-made fashion designer started designing her own clothes four years ago, and after receiving so much interest, started creating pieces to sell. According to Garine Kekejian, Commercial Manager of Katara Art Center, the concept of the fashion boutique at Katara Art Center “is to act as a platform for talented local and international fashion designers. It doesn’t matter if they are beginners, if their work fits with the theme of Katara – we will encourage them to exhibit here.” For more info, visit kataraartcenter.com

La Veranda’s newest chef on the block whips up a Valentine’s treat for GLAM.
When GLAM was invited to experience a Valentine’s dish prepared especially for us by La Veranda’s new Italian Chef Federica Piccioni, we couldn’t wait to see what was on offer. Chef Federica certainly didn’t disappoint with her deliciously sweet and spicy dish. “We’ve created a special dish for Valentine’s day using a combination of veal, lobster, grilled vegetables, chili, and ginger, topped with chocolate truffle sauce. The truffles come from my region Umbria, and are among the best truffles you can find in Italy. It’s a modern interpretation of a classic dish,” Federica shared. Frederica learned the tricks of the trade from her grandmother, an Italian cook, who used to take her eager granddaughter to various cooking events in Italy. “I have fond memories of helping my grandmother make home-made pasta. My passion was ignited early, I was just three, and I used to have a small area set up for me because I was too small to reach the table!” After finishing her studies in Hotel Management Institute, she started her culinary adventure that would lead her to various parts of the world such as Egypt, Abu Dhabi and now Doha, showcasing her skills of preparing traditional home-style Umbrian cuisine. What’s your fave dish? "I like to create different kinds of home-made pasta, especially ravioli. We have the classics and special ones which you can’t find in other restaurants." Share your top tips for aspiring chefs... "Work, work and work! In this line of work, there is so much to learn. Even if you’re a Master Chef, there’s always room for improvement. Every day the world of food is changing, and you can learn a new technique or dish." Tell us what food is in fashion... "Healthy food is in style!" La Veranda Restaurant is located at Sheraton Doha Resort.

hold value. They are not just words.”
GLAM thought that enough was enough already and 2012 would be more promising. Yet, it’s playing out very differently. Actress and singer Zooey Deschanel filed for divorce from her husband at the beginning of the year. And gossip has been circulating that a breakup is on the cards between couple of 14 years Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. However, the news that really gobsmacked us was that power couple Heidi Klum and her husband of eight years Seal were splitting after “growing apart.” Heidi and Seal were the pair that seemed to have it all – she the beautiful, original Victoria’s Secret angel and he the soulful singing sensation – with a seemingly strong marriage in which they’d renew their wedding vows in a lavish ceremony every year. Rumor has it that Seal’s wild partying antics have been a major contributing factor to the split. And a family holiday to the Aspen ski slopes at Christmas was the icing on the cake for the leggy German model, who couldn’t deal with the arguing anymore. Seal, on a promotional junket for his latest album Soul 2, has made various appearances since the announcement, openly talking about the split, adding controversy to the news with his behavior.
Adding further mystery, he belted out a rendition of Al Green’s classic song Let’s Stay Together, which appears on his new album
Soul 2 – and may have been a not-so cryptic message to his wife. In a frank interview with Piers Morgan, Seal hinted that there was possibility of reconciliation with his wife, when he shared his feelings for the supermodel ‘has not waned one iota’. Appearing upset, he revealed: “I love her with all my heart. How can you not somebody who you have just spent eight years with?” When quizzed by Piers Morgan whether he and his wife would get back together, he highlighted: “You can never say never. I can’t speak for my wife and I’m not going to sit here and BS you and say we haven’t had problems. Of course we have had problems, otherwise why have we split up?” He further divulged: “This is not a charade. We have problems, we have issues, but to our credit we have always been able to talk about them, to confront them. To assume that any couple goes without arguing is just nonsense.” Meanwhile, Heidi Klum has kept tight-lipped. Although, she was spotted wearing her wedding ring, leaving an LA studio after filming Project Runway. The question is now, will they or won’t they go through with divorce proceedings. Only time will tell. FEBRUARY 2012 / 47
The way they were... “Each year, Heidi and I get remarried. It’s a great party, but for about an hour, we go off on our own down to a private beach. We sit there with the kids and read vows to each other as the sun sets. It’s a very special moment to us.” Seal. “When I first met Seal he had a kindness and compassion that was so sincere I knew he’d be a good father. But it wasn’t until Leni was born and we had our three other children that I grasped what a great dad he is. He has infinite amounts of love and patience for our kids. He puts me and the children first.” Heidi 48 / FEBRUARY 2012

COVER STORY
Soulful Seal Seal wooed the crowd at a Victoria’s Secret Show in 2007 with his upbeat song Amazing, while a parade of models including his wife Heidi Klum, stormed the catwalk showcasing dazzling designs. Singing at shows is commonplace for the star, as in the past, he and Heidi even took to the stage at a Victoria’s Secret show to perform a duet called ‘Wedding Day.’
Brains and Beauty
Larger-then-life supermodel Heidi Klum first burst on to the modelling scene in 1992, after winning a $300,000 contract from her participation a contest “Model 92” in her native Germany. Her modelling career went from strength to strength, and she would eventually cement her status as the original ‘angel’ in her work for Victoria’s Secret, where she hosted many of its runway shows. In 2004, Klum furthered her repertoire, becoming the host, judge and executive producer of hit show Project Runway, which offers fashion design enthusiasts the chance to make their dreams come true with a prize money and opportunity to display at New York Fashion Week. She was also host, judge and co-producer of Germany’s Next Top Model. Aside from modelling and presenting, Klum has tried her hand at fashion design, painting, singing and acting – a well rounded woman is all we can say! FEBRUARY 2012 / 49

As a youngster, it was creating ‘little dreams’ out of Lego that sparked Jordanian Anas Younis Shanaah’s interest in design. It would eventually lead him to become an architect-turnedfashion designer which has us lusting over his brand – Aennis Eunis – characterised by its drop dead gorgeous collection of shoes and accessories inspired by Arabic calligraphy.

Red History
Our blushing red is not just a perennial fashion favourite, it is a colour that has captivated the imagination and attention of the beholder for centuries. A symbol of power, success and passion, worn by monarchs and the privileged – no colour screams ‘I am here’ like the colour Red. From the 1800s when soldiers dressed in red to intimidate and gain advantage on their enemies on the war field, to Duke John arriving in Paris in a red velvet suit lined with grey fur, worked over with gold foliage, resonating victory and power, to king Louis XIV who deemed red-heeled shoes as a symbol of the monarchy and only to be worn by nobility. A colour, unabashedly still holding its head high in arrogance today: Think of modern version of power dressing: from hurrying Wall Street executives in red ties and red suspenders, to the likes of Hillary Clinton with red power suits, red nails, red lips and red shoes. The magnetic appeal of one colour that can eclipse all else and transform a person or an object instantly.

In fashion, we have been blessed with icons who over the years had the hindsight to use the symbolism of the colour to create fashion statements that have stood the test of time and turned simple basics into legends. No one personified that better than Valentino (Garavani). Inspired by an opera in Barcelona, where as a teenager perched from the balcony, he sat looking down into the opera floor, marvelling at how women seated themselves in all their couture glory “looking like baskets of red flowers.” The trademark Poppy Red was first born in his 1950s Fiesta Cocktail Dress and became a pillar of his collections: 100% magenta, 100% yellow and 10% black – voluptuous and alive.

Christian Louboutin, at the tender age of 16, uninterested in bubbly or loud music, would sneak into Parisian nightclubs and appear at the Folies Bergere music hall with shoe etchings for the burlesque showgirls. Ten inch stilettos with platform detailing that extended the wearers legs – making her feel sensual, beautiful and powerful. In 1992, on a quiet morning at his showroom atelier in Paris, peering at another shoe designed for one of his discerning clientele, he realised it lacked soul. What happened next would define Louboutin and catapult his name into the frontline of the fashion world. He took red nail varnish from his assistant who was painting her nails, and painted the sole of the shoe with it, giving birth to his signature Christian Louboutin red sole.

Fashion rewind back to 2800 BC, Sumeria (a region in ancient Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq). A gold box with a paste of red powder is found in the tomb of a princess. For centuries thereafter, from Cleopatra to other Mesopotamian princesses, the red hue has been part of the make-up retinue. Red lipstick – like shoes and dresses – is striking, powerful, defiant and independent – transcending the wearer from simple to simply fabulous. In 1954 Coco Chanel created the vintage hue that would become known as Chanel Red. Satiny, creamy and long-lasting, as Coco Chanel once said: “If you’re sad or heartbroken, just put on a red lipstick and attack.” And so our love affair with Chanel Coco Rouge no 14, just like her sister Le Vernis Rouge Carat 587, remains in our hearts.

Spring into the Shade
It is only natural that the undying Red so rich in versatility and endurance, over time and space evolves into other varying shades of warmth. This Spring/Summer 2012 sees this evolution, with the colour red gently weaving its presence into pantones colour of the year: Tangerine Tango. Shoes, cocktail dresses and handbags – the colour is vibrant and full of sensual energy. This February when cupids arrow strikes, make sure you’re seen in the colour of the season.

again? For some, there may have been a time when wearing a dress more than once was given a reluctant second thought. Yet, it seems that, nowadays, people are more than happy to parade the same ensemble loud and proud, by wisely investing in pieces that transcend seasonal styles. We asked Doha’s style junkies for their thoughts and tips...

I believe in making high quality garments that are made to be treasured. The art of fashion has become extremely commercialised in the last decade and in order to be accessible, the quality of finish and materials used is compromised. Invest in pieces you love and reinvent your look with the styling. A beautiful dress will always make you feel great, and preserve meaningful memories.
Lama El-Moatassem, Founder of Toujouri
When wearing a dress more than once I like to play around with accessories, make-up and hair styles to give the outfit a fresh look. I try and pair it with different shoe styles, maybe with tights where appropriate. Using a different handbag or accessories can really funk up the outfit making the dress look new. However sometimes if I loved the look of the dress the first time, I have no issue in wearing the outfit the exact same way but play around with make-up. I like to think of the different looks before I buy any item of clothing.
There are many ways to wear a dress. If you wear a dress only once, you’re not really giving it a chance. You can accessorise it in different ways – wear a scarf or a jacket over it, or a cool new necklace. Heck, if you’re feeling crafty, add on some embellishments, cut it all up and sew it all over again. Get creative and make it your own.
Carla Mallari, PR & Marketing Co-ordinator, Style House
I find wearing a dress that works for you again is perfectly fine. I mean, if it works for your body and shape then it doesn’t matter how many times you wear it. Back in the day when a person wore a dress once, they usually wouldn’t wear it again because it was last season or so. However, nowadays people are more fashion educated and buy wisely. I believe that you make the dress beautiful, not the other way around.

Stylist’s Tips
The Style Revivalist Lynette Cowie offers her top tips...
1. Firstly buying a dress in a solid natural colour rather than, perhaps a very distinctive bold pattern or colour, can add versatility and longevity to the dress.
2. Adding a gilet or waistcoat to the dress, giving it more a look of separates. 3. Of course the tuxedo trend begs us to pair our dress with a lovely sequinned or super satin lapelled jacket as a hot option for a night out.
4. Belt it. Wearing different type of belts can really change the look, length and mood of a dress. Try skinny low slung, or wide in the waist or go with even higher waisted belt creating an empire styled dress.
5. Altering the length of a dress can be very impactful. Turn your once-worn floor
length gown into your best loved cocktail dress. If you want to lengthen a dress you could pick up on the least noticeable colour in the dress and add a new layer to the dress, thereby adding interest or play it safe with the same colour but a different texture. Either way it’ll add a new dimension and interest to your piece.
6. Doha is teaming with laces, braids and other decorative trims, maybe all the dress needs is some neckline details or a new lacy sleeve.
7. Give it a punch of colour – bringing new attention to your ensemble by way of a colourful pair of shoes can draw ones eye away from the much worn dress onto the new piece de resistance!
8. There’s always accessories like scarves, necklaces or a vintage brooch to add interest and a new dimension to one's ensemble!

too might have missed the actual online and in-store offerings of celebrated New York designer Jason Wu in his collaboration with Target, US’s second largest discount retailer. Whether or not you were part of the day’s cyber frenzy, Jason Wu has gallantly translated his usually top-dollar priced designs (famously worn by Michelle Obama) into new, inexpensive pieces that sold for no more than $60 (QR220) a piece. This successful collaborative union is the perfect match to woo young, hip and fashion-conscious shoppers – those who have an unrelenting appetite for internationally acclaimed designer-wear at cheap and cheerful prices. Wu’s one-off with Target adds to over a decade of similar short-term partnerships, the first courtship being with Mossimo in 2000. Target’s clever initiation of the now-popular collaboration trend, and their persistence in cherry-picking the most relevant and acclaimed designers – the likes of Isaac Mizrahi, Proenza Schouler, Alexander McQueen (a year before

his death) and more recently Missoni – has positioned the retailer as a ‘hot bachelor’, and partnering with them somewhat of a status-symbol for up and coming designers. FEBRUARY 2012 / 71
David Beckham for H&M For The Long Haul While kicking the trend of short-lived marriages, but eager to score through the soaring Valentine’s Day sales period, is David Beckham. He and H&M sealed the deal to launch his men’s underwear line earlier this month in 1800 H&M stores worldwide. Now considered part of the H&M team, plans are underway to have Beckham’s latest men’s bodywear products launched seasonally. Another strategically chosen partnership, that goes the mile, is that of actress and style icon, Chloe Sevigny, with Manhattan-based retailer Open Ceremony. Now on her fourth collection, it’s clear that this is one collaborative design philosophy that works for designer, retailer and customer, albeit a little bit on the steeper price range. Win-Win Indeed The benefits of collaborative projects to retailer and designer are numerous, with vastly different objectives and motivations. For the designer, collaborations offer an insight and entry into a younger market. They use this opportunity to market and position themselves as sought-after among youthful consumers, thereby growing their global awareness. With many collaborations being once-off affairs, it also presents them with the opportunity to try their hand at a new line, and being paid handsomely for it. Take Diane von Furstenberg’s collaborative entry into GAP Kids and Baby (sorry mums, only up to the age of 14 will be wearing GAP DVF this season) as a keen example of how the American designer can test the waters to potentially venture into her own kids’ wear range. Next month the Diane von Furstenberg line will be appearing in GAP Kids and Baby retail stores in 30 countries, while available online and shipped to 75 countries. While companies won’t kiss and tell of the fees and sale figures coming from these marriages of conveniences, it’s safe to say that it’s becoming increasingly lucrative for designers, whose fees have generally doubled over the last five years, as the demand and popularity of collaborations soar. This fast infusion of cash, whether a once-off fee or based on a percentage of sales, can certainly go a long way to sustaining their high-end collections and runway shows. For the lesser known or less established designers, a longer-term collaboration can build brand awareness. So it is for Siriano, winner of Project Runway 2008. Payless SHOESOURCE has agreed to a royalty remuneration scheme, which gives him the financial muscle to build on his

GLAM successes. Siriano’s shoes will be in 4 000 stores this spring, giving consumers an opportunity to buy into an otherwise elitist brand. On Everyone’s Feed For the retailer, the collaboration success has, surprisingly, little to do with the sales volumes, as their success is measured in the publicity generated around the partnership, rather than the items sold. Online fashion shows, tweets, Facebook, fashion blogs, videos are just some of today’s most powerful online tools used to exhaustively promote campaigns. Sure to grab the attention of online and in-store shoppers this month, is designer Mary Katrantzou’s 14-piece SS12 collection for TopShop. While this isn’t the first time they’ve joined hands, the popularity buzz is predicted to intensify over her latest distinctive, multi-print designs. In fact, when all is said and done, it’s about enticing and satisfying us, the customer and thankfully we won’t have to wait long to be part of these alluring unions!
Shopping Tips to Snap-up the Best: If online, ensure you’ve pre-registered on the site, going as far as to order an item beforehand to ensure you’re not held-up in the system’s payment or delivery

Being part of the short-lived frenzy is unavoidable, so be mindful of choosing wisely, basing your selection on figure, style, lifestyle and colour suitability If in doubt, select an accessory like a scarf or handbag – an item that’s sure to be used without the uncertainty of fitting correctly.

as we are reminded of slapstick jokes, but for women with breast implants, it is their biggest nightmare unfolding. Eight of the affected women had been found to have cancer including one of a rare immune system cell cancer. PIP reportedly used industrialgrade silicone rather than medical-approved silicone in its implants, possibly a move to increase profits by driving down costs, causing disastrous results. While medical-approved silicone records a 1% rate of leakage, PIP implants has a remarkably high 11% rate of leakage which results in serious complications including inflammation of breasts tissue due to its industrial content. It is no wonder that women in the UK are taking to the streets to demand for hospitals to replace their PIP implants with safer ones. PIP is the only company thus far that has been discovered in their unethical practice of substituting silicons with unapproved materials, but what guarantee is there that there aren’t any other implant companies out there who are doing the same thing but yet to be exposed? With all these dangers lurking around the corner, why are women still willing to undergo the knife to alter a part of their body which is vital to the reproduction system? Dropping the Doha Dozen Part Two BY Christina Maria Paschyn
I’ve been dreading writing this article. I had thought that, by now, I would have lost nearly all of my extra pounds and been celebrating achieving my goal weight. To jog your memories, in December I embarked on an intense diet and fitness regime to drop 15 pounds; my plan was to eat no more than 1200 calories a day and exercise 3-5 times a week. This was my main resolution for the New Year, and I was getting a head start. With ambition and determination burning within me, I had lost about seven pounds by the time I wrote my first instalment for GLAM.

wish I could say I lost another seven pounds in the past month – hell, I’d be satisfied with just two. But the truth is the holidays really did a number on my diet and fitness plan. Most people just have to get past two main winter holidays: Christmas and New Year’s Eve. If only I was so lucky. My family’s Ukrainian-American
background and Eastern-Catholic roots mean that, not only do we celebrate the Gregorian schedule of religious events, we follow the Julian calendar as well. That means celebrating regular Christmas, Ukrainian Christmas (Jan. 7), regular New Year’s Eve and then the Ukrainian one. It’s a constant stream of bubbly, food and overindulgence from Dec 25th to Jan 14th. It’s embarrassing admitting my failure on paper. But as my husband tenderly reminded me recently, most people have already given up their weight loss

To make sure you follow your plan, put it in writing. This will reinforce your resolve and make you more accountable for meeting your weekly goals. And each time you reach an important milestone in your weight loss plan, don’t forget to give yourself a little treat, like a spa day or shopping for clothes to fit your hot new physique. So do yourself a favour: Turn off the remote and start counting sheep. Weigh yourself every day and give yourself a reason to lose weight Recent studies show people who weigh themselves everyday tend to maintain their weight and avoid additional pounds than people who just weigh themselves once a week. I know, I know. Many people disagree; they say your body experiences so much dayto-day fluid fluctuation, you’ll see inaccurate losses or gains on the scale and start to feel discouraged. Yes, that’s true. But what’s also true is weight can pile on rapidly before you even know what hit you. That’s what happened to me in the week after my wedding when I realized I had gained five pounds in just seven days. Weighing yourself every day keeps you on your

stop you from living and excelling in life. As you know by now, many people around the world struggle with maintaining a healthy or aesthetically pleasing (to them) figure. That doesn’t mean other people don’t find you just as attractive, interesting or inspiring as you were before. More importantly, confidence has the amazing ability to pull focus away from any physical imperfections. I’ve done just that. A few days after the New Year, I brushed aside any apprehensions and doubts and bravely put my faith in a hair stylist who proceeded to chop off my gorgeous long blonde locks (a look I’ve sported since the 8th grade). And you know what? I absolutely love my haircut! I feel so much more sophisticated, yet daring and trendy, than I ever did before. And I know that my new look is going to look all the more fabulous when I reach my ‘perfect size.’ When you’re happy you’ll find that it’s easier to stay motivated in all aspects of your life, including fitness and nutrition. You’ll also start each day excited about what new opportunities are in store for you. So go out and make yourself feel beautiful, whether that means splurging on a luxury pedicure or buying a sexy new

Debates abound in the yoga world these days about just that – the glamorisation of yoga. Of yoga losing its true meaning. Young, thin, picture-perfect women in expensive yoga clothes. For many, yet another unattainable standard or body to live up to. But in thinking and mulling it over there is a relationship between the two, though perhaps not in the way you might expect.

THE TAN COMMANDMENTS
As much as we love the cooler winter months here in Doha, this is not so great for maintaining the beautiful sun kissed look that we are used to now. Thankfully there is sunless tanning which enables us to keep our gorgeous glow all year round!
H
ow Sunless Tanning Works... The ingredient in tanning lotions that gives your skin that delicious golden glow is Dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA.
DHA was first discovered in the late 1920s when DHA spilled on the skin and produced a brown colour. DHA has been listed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973, and has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years. Rest assured that despite it’s rather long and off-putting sounding name, DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity so it is perfectly safe. The skin is made up of two main layers: the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is also made up of layers. The outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum (or horny layer) is where self tanning occurs. DHA reacts with amino acids on the skin and oxygen in the air causing skin to turn brown, giving the appearance of a tan. Every day millions of dead skin cells are sloughed or worn away from the surface of the skin. Actually, every 35 to 45 days you have an entirely new epidermis. This is why the colour change produced by DHA creating the tan effect will gradually fade. A sunless tan lasts about 5-7 days usually. One great benefit of sunless tanning is that your skin is not exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays which are partly responsible for the ageing effect on the skin as well as leading to other more dangerous skin problems. There are two tanning methods. One is spray tanning which is usually done in salon by a trained professional and leaves you with a beautiful even colour. The second method is application by hand which uses a cream and is rubbed onto the skin, almost as you would apply a moisturiser, this can be done in salon or at home by yourself. 90 / FEBRUARY 2012

Tanning tips: Be sure to exfoliate before you apply your tan, this will help your tan last longer and fade evenly. If in the salon, be sure your therapist applies a barrier cream around your eyebrows, finger and toe nails. If you are applying the tan at home always use gloves to avoid staining your hands, apply moisturizer to your elbows, hands, knees and feet. Kimora Lee Simmons blending “East and West”with new skincare venture Supermodel Kimora Lee Simmons is branching into the realm of skincare with the launch of a product line blending Eastern and Western influences next month. The US model and entrepreneur has already successfully ventured into fragrance and cosmetics and is now following in the footsteps of models including Iman and Christie Brinkley in entering the skincare market. Simmons has ambitious goals for her nine-item treatment range, Shinto Clinical, which will be unveiled next month. Made in collaboration with New York dermatologist Eric Schweiger, products include an anti-aging moisturizer, a pore minimizer and an eyelash enhancer, with prices ranging from around $30-$70. Asian influences can be seen via ingredients including fish oil, pearl powder, omegas, and Wakame kelp extract. “This line is about their Eastern allure of diet and beautiful skin. It’s based on cultures that live from the sea,” Simmons told WWD. “The Western [influence] is the medicine, the efficacy, the delivery and the clinical results.” Simmons, who unveiled her namesake make-up brand in beauty chain Sephora back in 2006, added she has plans to “revamp” KLS Cosmetics once the Shinto Clinical launch is complete. Shinto Clinical debuts on shopping channel QVC February 24, with retail rollouts scheduled for late February and early March initially comprising US retailers Nordstrom and Fred Segal. The line is expected to develop consequently into the Middle East and Asian markets.
Kristen Stewart face of Balenciaga’s new ‘modern’ scent Kristen Stewart has been revealed as the face of a new yet-to-be-announced scent from Balenciaga, scheduled for release this fall. Speaking to WWD January 13, the fashion house’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquihre explained how the actress is the ideal muse for the fragrance. “Kristen embodies the modernity of the new Balenciaga fragrance with her unique sensibility and intelligence,” he explained, adding she shares the “radical spirit of Balenciaga.” Despite having appeared in movies ranging from Panic Room to Welcome to the Rileys, Stewart is best known for portraying Bella Swan in the Twilight 94 / FEBRUARY 2012

franchise. The Balenciaga job sees her joining co-stars Dakota Fanning and Ashley Greene in landing modeling gigs, with the latter being DKNY’s latest face and Fanning fronting the campaign for Marc Jacobs’s Oh, Lola! scent. Stewart expressed her excitement over the modeling venture, saying she felt a connection with Balenciaga even before she truly took an interest in style. “Even when I first began to consider fashion and admittedly rarely knew the brand I was wearing, I always recognized and loved Balenciaga. It feels full circle to be involved with something that spoke to me then and of course continues to excite me now,” she explained. French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg will remain the face of Balenciaga Paris, the label’s debut fragrance, which was launched in 2010.
Master perfumer at helm of Louis Vuitton’s first fragrance since 1930s Louis Vuitton has confirmed its entrance into the realm of fragrance, with master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud heading up the scent development. The news is significant considering the French fashion house has not marketed any perfumes since the 1920s and ‘30s, and it signals another expansion following the brand’s ventures into watches in 2002, fine jewelry in 2004 and eyewear in 2005. WWD reported January 4 that Cavallier-Belletrud has officially started work with the brand, although there is not yet a date for release as the perfumer will be taking his time and traveling the globe to find the perfect scents. The upcoming fragrance will eventually be distributed exclusively in Louis Vuitton’s 461 boutiques worldwide. “Making perfume is a magnificent journey, which starts with the quality of the base ingredients,” explained Cavallier-Belletrud. Cavallier-Belletrud’s past work includes L’Eau d’Issey, Dior Addict, Poeme by Lanctme and Stella by Stella McCartney. Louis Vuitton isn’t the only major fashion house to announce new fragrance ventures: beauty giant Estee Lauder announced last September that it has partnered with Italian label Marni for the latter’s first foray into perfume, set for release in fall this year.
New anti-wrinkle technology ‘tricks’ cells into regeneration The buzz around 2012’s must-have anti-wrinkle cream has begun, with a product reportedly set for release by French cosmetics company L’Oreal generating interest in the anti-aging industry. A report published January 2 by The Daily Mail claims a new line of anti-wrinkle creams which “trick” skin cells into regenerating themselves is expected for release this year.
“Now we are able to create a rejuvenating effect on the deeper levels of the skin.” Meanwhile, Richard Gallo, a professor of dermatology at the University of California in San Diego, described the results of the study into cell regeneration technology as “surprisingly good.” Gallo told The Sunday Times the technology could have a huge
