BRICKBATS Hi,

Happy Birthday GLAM!

Nadine Labaki’s new film Where Do We Go Now is epic; it plays on all the emotions with its funny and serious attributes. I picked up a copy of GLAM straight away when I saw her featured as your cover girl. It’s great to see a Middle Eastern woman climbing the film ranks so quickly, especially as Lebanon has such a small film industry. I can’t wait to see what Labaki comes up with next. Fatma Al-Mashaar

I didn’t realise that you guys turned four in December! That’s four whole years I’ve been religiously buying the number one fashion title in Qatar. I really liked your birthday coverage featuring sketches by designers Stephane Rolland and Emma Hill of Mulberry. What a nice touch. It was also great to see what like-minded local fashionistas had to say. Wishing you all the best for future issues... Rachel Gupta

Birthday Bonanza! Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you... Congratulations on a fashion filled year of hot designer exclusive interviews and celeb stories. Hope to see you get bigger and better in 2012. Lama Rasheed

Dearest GLAM, As you noted in the December issue, the scarf is by far winter’s fave accessory. And I was delighted to see all the different ways to wear one in Lynette Cowie’s style snapshot story. I honestly didn’t know of all these ways to glam up an ensemble and make it look so different with such a simple accessory. I’m hitting the end of year sales to stock up on these little beauties pronto. Thanks! Reeta Nashim

Hey GLAM, Happy 4th birthday! I loved the story about Porto Arabia Salon at The Pearl Qatar. It’s quite funny because my husband has been complaining about the lack of outlets for men to ‘groom’. With your help I managed to book him in just in time for a New Year polish! Samantha Tormey

Hello GLAM Qatar, Your festive fever pages gave me some good ideas on what to buy my other half over the festive season. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I find buying presents for men extremely difficult. Us gals seem to have a wealth of options, where as the options for men seem to be quite limited. With the season of love just around the corner, I look forward to your help of what I can buy for him. Maria Martinez

Giambattista Valli joins haute couture club

Italian designer Giambattista Valli is to join the exclusive club of haute couture fashion, showing a springsummer collection in Paris. A Paris commission including existing haute couture labels has awarded the 45-year-old designer, the coveted appellation, France’s fashion federation said in a statement ahead of the January 23-26 shows. Haute couture exists only in Paris, where it is a legally protected appellation subject to strict criteria such as the amount of work carried out by hand, the limited number of pieces and the size of a house’s workforce. Valli showed a first couture collection in Paris in July, as a guest member invited by existing couture houses. Trained at Italy’s European Design Institute and London’s Saint Martin’s School of Arts, Valli started out at Roberto Capucci, moving to Fendi and Emanuel Ungaro, where he was Art Director of ready-to-wear, before launching on his own in 2005. Only a handful of major French houses show under the couture label – Chanel, Dior, Gaultier and Givenchy – joined by a number of smaller houses, as well as Italians Valentino, Armani and Versace, and Lebanon’s Elie Saab and Rabih Kayrouz. 14 / JANUARY 2012

Industry sources say Christian Dior is finalising a contract for Belgian designer Raf Simons to become Creative Director. The French fashion house dismissed former Head Designer John Galliano back in March following his arrest at a Paris bar for racist and anti-Semitic behaviour. Although Dior’s design studio has continued to produce couture and ready-to-wear collections headed by Bill Gaytten, no replacement for Galliano has yet been revealed – despite a string of designers including Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci and Alber Elbaz being linked to the role. According to insiders, a deal with Raf Simons, who has been Creative Director at Jil Sander since 2005, still needs to be concluded as key details are yet to be worked through. Despite there being no comment from Dior on the matter, the rumors hint that the fashion house could be moving towards a more simplistic aesthetic. While Galliano’s extravagant catwalk shows and flamboyant eveningwear became iconic, Raf Simons’ creations both for Jil Sander and his own eponymous menswear label are more minimalistic. That said, his venturing into womenswear for Jil Sander have confirmed the designer’s versatility and flair for ball gowns and bridal wear.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner getting fashion line: the next Olsen twins?

There’s a new sibling pair to watch out for in the fashion arena – the Keeping Up with the Kardashians show’s youngest stars Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Celebrity sibling fashion lines have proven to be big business in recent years, ranging from the more commercial Jessica Simpson’s partnering with sister Ashlee for tween line Jessica Simpson Girls, to fashion industry favorites Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, who have evolved from a tween fashion collection at US retailer Walmart to running esteemed fashion label The Row. Until now Kendall and Kylie have been overshadowed by their older half sisters, although events including Kendall’s bikini shoot for Australian label White Sands, have seen them increasingly hit the headlines in the fashion arena. Now Kendall, 16, and 14-year-old Kylie, who scooped the Stylish Sisters prize at the 2011 Hollywood Style Awards in November, have landed a deal with fashion jewellery and accessories company Glamhouse. The collection does not yet have a name, although it is expected to be aimed at teens and tweens, with a launch scheduled for Fall 2012 in the US. The range will be affordable, with prices ranging from $19.99 - $69.99. JANUARY 2012 / 15

Brad Pitt, Tom Jones, Enrique Iglesias and the Jonas Brothers are just some of the famous faces make-up artist and hair stylist Jenny Schoenmann has worked with throughout her impressive career. She tells Orna Ballout about the journey so far...

J

enny Schoenmann stood shaking outside Tom Jones’s dressing room for what seemed like forever, before she could finally build up the courage to enter. “I don’t know what came over me, I was so nervous when I had to do his makeup before a show. It wasn’t even as if I was his biggest fan, but it was Tom Jones; I’ve known his name since I was a child. He was such a gentleman – he told me to sit down, relax, and have a coffee!” The veteran singer certainly made an impression. In her beauty career spanning 10 years, she’s touched enough celebrity skin to make us all green with envy – think Brad Pitt, Enrique Iglesias, the Jonas Brothers – yet, it was the oldest of the lot, Welsh star Jones, who managed to send her into a panic! In her native Germany, Schoenmann spent years mastering the art of beauty before travelling around the globe as a make-up artist and hair stylist. Not only has she rubbed shoulders with 26 / JANUARY 2012

To create a dramatic look, I always use hair extensions. I like how her face looks very natural but at the same time the blue eyeshadow makes it pop.

some of the hottest men on the planet, she accompanied singer Amy MacDonald on her European tour, and has beautified the likes of Anastasia and Duffy. It’s not all about famous faces; she worked behind the scenes at fashion shows for Tommy Hilfiger and Tom Tailor, and on high-profile fashion shoots and commercials. “I love the whole atmosphere working on a photo shoot. There’s always a bit of doubt at the beginning when you haven’t worked with the people before, but after a couple of hours you start building a relationship as a team. It’s very rewarding when you see the final outcome; I love the time spent getting to know people in between.” Styling Qatar Schoenmann moved to Doha in April this year with her husband and daughter, and has since been busy adapting to the local market. “I feel that business is good here. Ladies are usually

looking for somebody who can do both hair and make-up. There are really good hair stylists and make-up artists here, but not many that can do both. In Europe, it’s fairly common to do both.” Schoenmann appreciates that beauty is a big business here. “In Germany, the look is very natural and most of the women don’t even wear make-up. I was surprised at just how many people have good make-up here.” Foundation Fundamentals Mastering the look isn’t always as easy as it seems, she’s noticed women tend to have trouble finding the perfect foundation. “It needs to be the right shade and combination for your skin. I know women who haven’t found the right foundation for years! Here it’s difficult as most of shops in the malls lack natural sunlight. I would recommend taking a few samples home and applying them in the sunlight to know which ones really fit. I prefer the professional brands such as MAC,

Bobbi Brown and Make Up For Ever. However, it’s not like when you find the perfect one you wear it for ten years; skin is constantly changing – when you have your period, in a different climate or exposed to air conditioning, your foundation needs to adapt with it.” Beauty Regime With her flawless complexion and healthy hair, it’s almost certain Schoenmann must know all the tricks of the trade to get ‘the look’. “My beauty regime is actually very simple. Every morning I clean my face and put on a day cream – I like organic products that aren’t tested on animals such as Nuxe. My day look is very natural and doesn’t take more then ten minutes. However, when I’m attending an event, I like to experiment. I love different lip colours. I usually play around with various shades of pinks, reds and browns, or sometimes, to be really different, I’ll use an intense blue.” JANUARY 2012 / 27

I enjoy creating different looks and experimenting with intense colours and different types of eye lashes. And of course, I love pink!

Lifestyle vs Looks According to the beauty pro, it’s impossible to judge whether anti-ageing, firming, or any ‘miracle’ products actually work. “It’s so hard to tell because it’s something you can only really find out yourself. I do believe they can help a little, but it’s dependent on your lifestyle. When you eat healthy foods, exercise, and are a happy person it makes a massive difference. When you look after yourself, it really shows. I can immediately tell who is a smoker, especially in men, as it takes its toll on your skin.” For hopefuls wishing to follow in the footsteps of an international make-up artist and hair stylist, and get the opportunity to glamify big stars, you have to be prepared for hard work. “I really stress the importance of having an education as a hair dresser. In Europe, you’ll never be booked if you can’t do both hair and make-up. Try to link up with photographers, stylists and create photo shoots. Also, try to get as much experience working behind the scenes at fashion shows, or shadowing a professional. You’ll have to work for little or no money, but with time and hard work, you’ll eventually reap the benefits.” For more info visit: www.jennyschoenmann.com www.beauty-doha.com 28 / JANUARY 2012

eauty trends have their ebb and flow. There is no raging debate on our preferences or the choices we make – be it the shape of our eyebrows, shade of our lipstick shades, nail art or hair lengths. Talk skin colour on the other hand, and ammunition at the ready, both sides are ready to fire. Skin whitening is a sensitive issue that often sparks strong opinions. There are psychological, social and political undertones attributed to who people crave a lighter complexion: Is it fairytale hangover from reading of Snow White as a child? Maybe an echo of racial discrimination? Or that most fashion icons we see are fair skinned beauties? A marketing ploy that feeds on insecurities, perhaps? Women tend to stand divided, believing strongly against or for the quest of fairer skin, but the pursuit of the latter seems to be gaining the upper hand as the beauty industry increasingly churns out more products that relate to skin whitening. More than just the simple act of achieving fair skin, the desire to be fairer and whiter is driven by social and racial implications as we continue to be mesmerised by visuals of fair women in the media. I am sure we have all seen TV advertisements (in Asia, Africa and the Arab world) where an olive-skinned girl was duly ignored by the boy of her dreams. Several weeks later, when she reappeared with fairer skin after using the advertised skin whitening lotion, her boy crush then becomes smitten by her new skin tone. What kind of message exactly are we sending to the young women out there? The tone and message is repeatedly used in so many similar products, we have either become immune to how offensive it is. Not just in advertisements, but every day, in various media channels, we are subversively being fed the idea that only Snow White will be successful and happy in life. Ever notice how the antagonists in TV shows and movies are usually of a darker colour? Ever notice how out of 12 covers of any given magazine, less than three are adorned by women of darker skin tones? 30 / JANUARY 2012

on the wall,

Who’s the fairest of us all? Lighten the diversity, please! The big hoo-hah in the entertainment and fashion industry to be more inclusive and diverse remains, just that-a hoo-hah. Somalian supermodel Iman is celebrated as a beautiful African beauty, yet, magazines airbrush her skin colour to a lighter tone to be worthy of their covers. While thousands of other aspiring young African girls who look to Iman as a source of inspiration, are bound to question their own skin colour. Perhaps it would be easier for them to emulate Iman if they had a lighter skin tone and thus spark the insatiable demand for skin-whitening products and treatment regardless of the side effects that may occur. Two of the biggest pop stars today are beauti-

ful coloured women like Beyonce and Rihanna. The duo are also strong advocates of embracing their own diverse ethnicity; especially Rihanna who comes from Barbados. But exactly how effective is their voice in empowering women if photos of these stars become increasingly lightened over time? In India, which is a huge market for skinwhitening products, powerhouse actresses including former Miss World Aishwariya Rai and Kareena Kapoor are also much celebrated for their fairer complexion (more than their acting prowess) which symbolises beauty and success. As this message trickles down to the billion-plus population, all that is left is the constant quest to be the fairest of them all, because only women who are fair will achieve happiness in life.

GLAM

The Arab fix The notion that white skin represents a superior race and ultimate beauty is very much present in this region as large majority of women continue to seek out skin whitening treatments. Not only do they use over-the-counter skinwhitening products that are offered by almost all beauty brands, they go to great lengths seeking both invasive and non-invasive surgeries to lighten their skin. “About 90 percent of my patients who have come in seeking other treatments will eventually enquire about skin-whitening treatments and most of them do it for vanity and beauty reasons rather than for medical conditions like black spots or birth marks,” dermatologist Dr Sanaa

Mustapha from the Dr Hassan Dermatology & Venereology Centre explains. While most of us dream of a Prince Charming that will accept us for all our flaws, skin colour included, it seems that this is no longer a legit dream. “Most of the women here view white skin as the absolute symbol of beauty and the men prefer women with whiter skin too. It is especially important to women who are going to be married because they want fairer complexion for their wedding celebrations,” she says.

What’s that on your skin? The treatments offered as non-invasive procedures include the usage of topical cream and chemical peels. The main active function

FEATURE

in most non-invasive procedures is to reduce and prevent the amount of melanin production which is the substance responsible for our natural skin colour. The latest non-invasive procedure that is gaining popularity is the nonablitave laser resurfacing which targets the microscopic zones of the epidermis and dermis to result in fairer complexion. Controversial invasive procedures that have made headlines for causing adverse side effects include dermabrasion and ablitave laser treatment. Dermabrasion involves the abrasion of the upper layers of the skin akin to using sandpaper to wood and the procedure requires local anaesthetic. The ablitave laser treatment is based on the same concept of upper layer skin removal by directing brief intense burst of laser energy on the skin. The energy heats water within the surface layers of the skin and turns both water and tissue to vapour. Both procedures will result in the skin being sore and raw after the treatment and requires long periods of time to heal with delicate care. “Non-invasive procedures are what we would usually recommend to patients seeking skin lightening treatments for cosmetic reasons. Invasive procedures are only used to treat patients with medical skin conditions. The adverse effects of invasive procedures are just not justified for cosmetic purposes considering that it may result in hyper pigmentation, scarring, white head formation, erythema, infection and post inflammatory hyper pigmentation. These complications are especially common in dark skin individuals,” Dr Sanaa explains. JANUARY 2012 / 31

Risky beauty

Despite the risks of irreversible skin damage and hyper pigmentation, women continue to flock to dermatologists demanding for these procedures hoping for instant gratification and not thinking about the long-term effects on their skin. 48-year-old Nurliza Shareen who underwent a dermabrasion treatment says she had to stay at home for close to two weeks because her skin was sore and she just could not bear to meet people during the period with her red face. When she finally left home, she had to wear a visor cap for close to a month to protect her face from the sun. However, not all women who seek skin lightening treatments are looking for the porcelain perfect fairness but are just trying to improve skin conditions including black spots, uneven skin tones and birth marks. These can usually be remedied with over-the-counter beauty creams which are available at beauty spas and pharmacies. Although this method may not produce immediate results, the long-term usage of these products will allow the skin to slowly absorb and adapt to the active ingredients in the cream formulas. “Women in particular suffer from pigmentation and spots on their face due to changes in hormones at different phases of their lives espe32 / JANUARY 2012

cially during menstruation and pregnancy. For simple cases like these, women prefer to use creams rather than undergo surgeries because it is safer, fuss-free, affordable and can be done in the comfort of their own homes,” says Carla Coetzee, Manager of Dados Beauty and Spa. The beauty centre uses the Nu Skin skinbrightening range which helps minimise dark spot and prevents new discolouration. A skin whitening cream fan Danieli Louzen, says that the reason she uses these products is to help maintain a lighter skin tone which makes it easier for her to experiment with different makeup colours. “I have a slightly tanned complexion and I realised that only bright palette of make-up colours like blue or pink would standout on my skin. I started using skin-whitening skin care products and creams to help get a fairer and clearer complexion so that I can use other makeup colours including brown and grey which can help create a sexy and sultry look.” While these may seem remarkably safer than surgical procedures, a lot of consumers may not realise the long-term effects of certain skin lightening creams that contain chemicals including hydroquinone that act to prevent the natural production of melanin in the skin. Melanin acts as a natural protection against the sun

and without it, we become more susceptible to skin cancer. The US Food and Drug Administration has even issued a warning that over-thecounter skin bleaching drug products are not generally recognised as safe and effective. Rather than resorting to surgeries or using skin lightening creams, Dr Sanaa believes that preventive measure is the most important step to preserving a healthy skin colour. “Try to avoid sun exposure as much as possible especially with the harsh weather in this region. Unless it is absolutely necessary, try not to go under the sun between 9am to 3pm in Qatar’s weather. Even woman who wears the niqab must apply sunscreen on their face because the fabric does not serve as sufficient protection from the sun! Always apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you head out to allow the skin to absorb the lotion and remember to reapply the sunscreen every few hours!” she advises. But ultimately, the most important concern at hand is not the dangerous and painful methods that women go through to achieve fairness but the complex issues of self acceptance towards their own natural skin colour. If we all truly embraced diversity and inclusiveness, perhaps then we will no longer have to endure shallow advertising that perpetuates a fairy tale.

Persian Carpets, Ladybirds and

Birds of Paradise By Yousra Samir

If you are the type of fashionista who doesn’t just follow the crowd and is constantly on the lookout for pieces that no one else owns, then look no further. British-Iranian designer Mia Jafari turns her wearers from mere mortals into birds of Paradise with her colourful, playful and feminine creations inspired by pop art culture, fashion iconography and her Persian heritage.

W

hen Mia Jafari designs a collection, she envisions a bird of paradise in the Amazon rainforest, making her nest from Chanel lipsticks, Dior sunglasses, Christian Louboutin heels, vintage Cartier and treasures found from her travels. This is the inspiration behind her fun, playful, feminine and somewhat quirky collections, which consist of chic silk scarves and girly cocktail dresses. Mia, a graduate from Central Saint Martins, London’s most prestigious design school, and Goldsmiths, trained in textiles and visual arts, making her something of an all-round artist, but it was fashion design which really won her over. She made her debut into the world of fashion in 2010 with her first 34 / JANUARY 2012

collection, ‘Ladybird Strawberry Cosmos’. The collection was an instant hit with fashion packs worldwide. The 100% silk scarves and dresses were covered in fun motifs like ladybirds, lipsticks, cocktails, ice creams and perfume bottles, as well as Persian designs, inspired by Mia’s Iranian heritage. “There’s a tremendous crossover between Bond Street iconography and traditionalism in my work. I love luxury but mostly I like the dream of luxury! Life can be mundane in places and every girl needs a bit of glamour and fantasy in their lives as escapism!” says Mia. It is obvious by looking at her designs that Mia’s Persian heritage is very important to her and she incorporates elements of it in her work. ‘Ladybird

Strawberry Cosmos’ was heavily influenced by Persian carpets and embroidery, while her latest collection, ‘Waterlilies’, for Spring/Summer 2012, was inspired by the dreamy colours of Iranian master painter Farshchian. “I am really interested in exploring the fusion between traditional Iranian craft and modern technology,” says Mia, “My Iranian heritage is a huge influence to my work and gradually I am trying to incorporate traditional Iranian embroidery and craft more and more into my work.” Not only is Mia a successful fashion designer, but she is also a pioneer of sorts. She is the brains behind her very own design technique, ‘digi-droidery’, in which traditional Persian embroidery and motifs are transferred onto fabric using digital art.

GLAM

She wanted to retain the intricate delicacy of traditional Persian embroidery while making them more wearable and easy to recreate. Through arts council funding, Mia was able to take her idea further and research into how to convert hand-stitched embroidery into digital art. Each motif has to be stitched by hand and then re-stitched digitally, a process that Mia admits takes a lot of time. Just one print takes a week to complete! For her Spring/Summer 2012 collection, ‘Waterlilies’, Mia took her inspiration from the artwork of Monetesque paintings. The playful, feminine and chic dresses come in a colour palette of turquoise, blue, lilac, green and yellow and are printed with tropical flowers. As always, Mia has injected a bit of

humour with motifs like ladybirds and a Christian Louboutin heel. The dresses have 1950s references with vintage-inspired cuts. She has used silhouettes like ballooned and pleated blouses worn under high-waisted skirts, with pockets and draping. The designs are embellished with Swarovski crystals, intricate hand embroidery and embellishment on the necklines over the digi-droidery to create the feel of oversized embellishments. Of her current collection Mia says, “I wanted the collection to reference a timeless woman like a beautiful painting. I imagined the wearer of the collection to be a girl with bags of humour, quirky and playful, but still incredibly elegant and sophisticated. So although my prints are playful, the cuts are very sophisticated

and elegant. I have taken influences from 1950’s vintage cuts but given them a modern, fresh twist.” The dresses are perfect for attending a tea party, with a giant tropical flower in one hand, and a cocktail in the other, Mia says. Currently stocking her collection in S*uce boutique in Dubai and Crime boutique in Bahrain, is Mia thinking about expanding to Qatar anytime soon? “I would love to!” was Mia’s answer, “I have been truly amazed by the fabulous boutiques and style in the Middle East. I love the fact that the Middle East is such a melting pot of so many design influences. Middle Eastern women have a great sense of style which is fun, sexy, experimental yet elegant. They are never boring!” JANUARY 2012 / 35

David A Joseph, Creative Director of Bochic You started in the music and film industry before venturing into the world of jewellery in 1991... I made the transition from music and film because I foresaw the changes to come in the industry. I wanted to do something more creative and connected to the arts because my work in the music industry was much more on the business side. It was an invigorating change that I am excited to have made, to this day.

Describe a typical Bochic lady. We follow our bohemian chic (Bochic) woman on her exotic journeys around the world. This is what I draw inspiration from. Each design is based on the fantasy of world travel – based around real time excursions today, as well as historical travels. If you look at my last collection you will notice that it highlights The Orient Express meets Parisian style. It is the kind of jewellery that “she” would find in a local Souq, or an heirloom piece in her grandmother’s treasures.

Share your tips on how to make the most of an outfit with accessories. I personally stay away from what is trendy or of the moment – though it can guide and inform style choices. I think of personal style, when making the decision on what is appropriate. I suggest choosing items that work from day to night. Nothing too ‘blingy’ but if you wore it in the evening, it would definitely stand out. I tend towards items that have vintage feeling with a modern twist. Bold in size and colour, as opposed to shine.

What differentiates you from other jewellery brands? Our aesthetic is strong and distinct. We sit with forward-thinking artisans who continuously reinvent their designs – true leaders in the market. I challenge myself to find inspiration in surprising arenas when designing each new collection as well, and to utilise unexpected materials that are stunning, but in a fresh way.

www.bochic.com

Miriam Salat, Designer of Bochic and Miriam Salat As well as co-designing Bochic, you have your own collection. How do you differentiate your touch in each line? Miriam Salat is more playful and colourful, whereas Bochic is ultra sophisticated and a bit more delicate though still bold in its own way. Essentially, the difference in materials makes the two collections divergent.

Katy Perry, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga are just some celeb fans of Miriam Salat – what gives you such star appeal? Right now, the marketplace does not have anything similar. Because it is so unique and each piece is a statement – the collection draws the attention of influencers. Though there is a strong trend appeal to it, my design focus is vintage meets modern, which gives it a sense of timelessness.

3

What’s your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from layered elements that include vintage influences, fashion, the material itself (resin because it is like hyper stone), and its wearability. The combination of vintage motifs in silver, paired with cool modern shapes in resin is the signature of the collection. The other aspect is the gorgeous colour palette. I love stacking opaque shades with transparent pieces and layering different designs.

Which are the highlight pieces that appeal to a luxurious appetite? Our Ribbon collection because it is very luxurious and layers different combinations of stones with distinct metal work that feels very royal; also my animal designs like the Lionhead pieces that are quite large and utilise intricate metal work. Our new gold collection is an outstanding combination of size as well as hue, and mixed with the gold – each piece is truly a standout. There are gold drop earrings and a nugget necklace that is eye catching. And your fave piece? The Medallion Cuff

Victoria Beckham by CASSEY OLIVEIRA

The late ‘90s saw a five-girl pop band Spice Girls rule the music charts internationally. While the catchy tunes slowly faded and the girls went their separate ways, ‘Posh Spice’ evolved into the ultimate fashion queen. Recently awarded ‘Designer Brand Of The Year’ at the prestigious British Fashion Awards, there’s no doubt that 2012 is going to be a huge year for the style savvy star. GLAM looks at how it all began and shares some of Victoria’s secrets...

ashionably yours Victoria’s earliest stint as a fashion designer took off in 2004 when she designed a limited-edition fashion line of designer jeans called VB Rocks for the Rock & Republic fashion brand. Despite her line faring well with friend and Rock & Republic designer, Michael Ball calling her someone “who understood fashion and trends”, critics never quite took her seriously as a designer. She was just another celebrity-turned designer 48 / JANUARY 2012

and the glamorous wife of soccer player David Beckham. But little did she falter. Instead she went on to launch her first eponymous line in 2008 that won her rave reviews. What started off as a collection of dresses has now expanded over the past three years to include luxury handbags and winter coats. Today, Victoria’s line counts among the highest earning brands. She even took home the prestigious award for ‘Designer Brand of the Year’ at the

GLAM

2011 British Fashion Awards, silencing critics evermore while beating the likes of several fashion giants such as Stella McCartney, Tom Ford and Burberry. Her fashion line is the most sought after brand among celebrities, names that include Sandra Bullock, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Blake Lively, Eva Longaria and Katie Holmes. Prior to the much-awaited Royal Wedding, Victoria had revealed that Kate Middleton’s family had requested to review a

few of the dresses from her previous collections, but lost out to Sarah Burton, Creative Director of fashion brand Alexander McQueen. Style has no bounds, and Miss Posh only proved it when she was appointed as a creative consultant for the interior of the upscale Evoque Range Rover and later was named the ‘Woman of the Year’ by Top Gear magazine. Lady luck in tow, the SUV too was named ‘Car of the Year’ by the magazine. Could car designing be next in

store for the fashionista, we wonder. The arm candy Posh and Becks. The powerful duo makes a gorgeous couple – David – a handsome hunk on-field and Victoria – a glamorous diva offfield, and undoubtedly the darlings of British tabloids. Their high-profile wedding in 1999 was the talk of the town. Victoria dazzled in a tightly fitting ivory wedding dress designed by JANUARY 2012 / 49

Vera Weng that complemented David’s ivory and cream suit. A nude sculpture of the couple that adorned their wedding cake added to the limelight. Thirteen years later, and the couple still look madly in love. Quoted as saying:

“David is my rock. He encourages me and gives me the confidence to do what I do and my kids inspire me every day. My family means everything to me.” Yummy Mummy Victoria’s a doting mum to four children with hubby David – Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, 9, Cruz, 6, and baby Harper (finally a girl) who joined the Beckham clan in July last year. Four kids and a figure like that? It’s reported that mummy Victoria followed the new ‘Five Hands’ diet – a strict regime that consists of just five handfuls of food a day in addition to gentle post-natal exercises to get rid of the extra

baby kilos. The new mom looked her skinnybest in a long sleeveless red dress from her own new Autumn/Winter Collection paired with knee-high Christian Louboutin highheeled grey boots when she arrived at the New York Fashion Week with baby Harper in her arms. Rumour mills also say that Victoria is keen to launch a childrenswear line soon. If that’s true, we are pretty sure where she would draw her inspiration from. Quoted as saying:

“I think there’s a big difference between someone having an eating disorder and someone who is controlled about what they eat...every now and then of course I go out and eat what I like. But I do try to be quite disciplined in the way that I eat.”

Victoria’s

Secrets

1.

Born Victoria Adams in Hertfordshire, England, in 1974, she was interested in music and performing from a young age, and attended both the Jason Theatre School and Laine Arts Theatre College.

2.

Hailing from a wealthy background, she was often bullied by school mates and found it hard to fit in. She even pleaded with her father to not drop her to school in his Rolls Royce.

3.

Her favourite designers are Dolce & Gabbana and Donatella Versace.

4.

While she is the godmother to former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell’s daughter, Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley are godparents to her two older boys, Brooklyn and Romeo.

50 / JANUARY 2012

5.

Victoria performed for the last time with former band mates Emma Bunton, Mel Brown, Mel Chisholm and Geri Halliwell during a Spice Girls final show of their reunion in 2008 in Toronto. There is no sign of another reunion since then.

6.

There’s rarely a smile on her face in photographs thanks to her signature pout which she says comes naturally.

7.

In addition to her eponymous fashion line, she is a proud owner of Victoria Beckham Denim, Victoria Beckham Eyewear and two fragrances. The latest addition to her lines is the new mid-price dress line Victoria, Victoria Beckham.

I collect vintage Guccis and Carreras – they can make virtually any outfit look cool.” Heels... Be it casual dinners, partying or even grocery shopping, Victoria can often be spotted tottering in towering heels. Her extensive shoe collection ranges from Dolce & Gabbana 4in sandals, Giambattista Valli 5in heels, Louboutin 6in heels and an infamous pair of Antonio Berardi 7in PVC boots. Ouch! Quoted as saying: If you haven’t got it, fake it! Too short? Wear big high heels, but do practice walking! Skinny leather pants... Our fashionista knows how to carry off her skinny frame well by teaming up loose t-shirts with her signature skin-tight black leather pants. Her hair short... For most of the time, Victoria has had her hair short. We loved the uber chic bob that she made famous though her current long tresses don’t look bad either. Frocks... Victoria gave the LBD a whole new dimension with her very own LBTD – little black trench dress – that she wore during the launch of her fashion line in Moscow in 2010. The dresses that she designs are a rage among other Hollywood beauties as well. Victoria Beckham... Yes, the designer wears her own label on several occasions. She was recently spotted wearing a few pieces from her latest collections when she was out shopping with Baby Harper. The navy blue dress that she wore to the Royal Wedding was from her new Autumn/Winter 2011 collection.

STYLE SNAPSHOT

By lynette cowie

In toe-tapping celebration for 2012, GLAM had Lynette Cowie, The Style Revivalist, walk the talk in finding the best Brogues on Doha’s high street.

here’s a popular saying, “Behind every successful man there is a woman.” As stylist and shoe lover, I’d go so far as add to that; “Behind every sure-footed woman there is a brogue.” This iconic design – best recognised as a high vamped shoe with enclosed lace-up detailing and decorative perforations –conjures up so many deliriously indulgent affections, not least of which is their renowned comfort, versatility and timeless style. Like so many long-standing design successes, the brogue initially – close to 100 years ago – came about as a utilitarian commodity; an outdoor walking shoe. Originating in Scotland and Ireland, the leather perforations were designed to allow water to drain from the shoe over wet terrains. That’s a far cry from the versatility it offers wearers and designers of today. Using the traditional ‘footprint’ as a winning recipe, designers regularly conceptualise up-to-date style interventions of colour, materials or heel options for a current seasonal spin on the classic. It’s this willingness to adapt, which reputedly saw Gisele Bundchen, Brazilian supermodel, redirect footwear trends late last year. Her refusal to wear heels on the catwalk for Frenchowned fashion house Balenciaga had

the designers do a re-think, resulting in brogues becoming the basis of their posh-punk spring/summer 2011 collection. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction one enjoys in purchasing and wearing a sustainable fashion piece, especially knowing you’re among a century of style-watchers, wearers and influencers who have breathed life into this time-honoured footwear staple. The 1920s saw glamorous Marlene Dietrich, German-American actress and singer, set-off the omnipresent androgynous trend. The most recent of brogues’ style ambassadors include the likes of style savvy Sienna Miller, fashion designer and Alexa Chung, US MTV presenter. Update your brogue style The classic 1970s Twiggy look – long, wide leg trousers with the tips of the brogue peeking out while the rest is covered – is still relevant today. Although in the spirit of updating, let’s demonstrate the definitive beauty of brogues – the fact that they can be worn with just about everything; giving your loafers and ballet flats the season off. 1. Give them Feminine Flair: If you want to buck the androgynous look altogether – create complete feminine follow-through by pairing the brogue with a short or knee length skirt, a pretty tie-neck blouse, cardigan and bare legs. JANUARY 2012 / 55

Massimo Dutti combines the characteristic ‘holes’ with the femininity of ballerina flats. QR 390 Soft on the feet these Massimo Dutti suede brogues are ideal for wearing sock free. QR 390

2. Bare is Best: Showing your sock-less ankles under cuffed or rolled pants also creates a more feminine look. 3. Have Fun: If it’s a cheeky sure-styled uniqueness of dress you’re ready for, then add a pair of argyle, stripe or detail printed sock with a patent or brightly coloured brogue. 4. Find Interest in the Details: Go for a vintageinspired approach by wearing slim cigarette-leg pants paired with short, scrunched-up, stocking socks (you can add a little satin sock bow) to bring touch of femininity and textural interest. 5. Borrowed-from-the-Brothers: Go the distance by layering the on-trend tuxedo jacket, T-shirt, great fitting denims and a fun two-tone brogue. 6. Lengthen those Legs: To visually lengthen your leg, keep the colour contrast between brogue and hosiery low. Dark brown or black opaque stockings, with the same tone as your brogues, will elongate your silhouette – and keep you warm! Brogue care tips Keep the tissue paper contents of the box in which you bought the brogues. Pack it tightly into the foot of the shoe to retain the shoes shape, alternately purchase shoehorns. 56 / JANUARY 2012

Periodically clean out your shoe racks and wipe the cupboard surfaces with a damp cloth to avoid dust build-up. Polish or wipe the leather, paying special attention to cleaning in and around the perforations. If you find you’ve brought leather brogues too small, take them for professional stretching. Up to a full size longer and half width bigger can usually be achieved. Being a high vamped shoe, the brogues will no doubt be stored during Doha’s summer months. To ensure they’re packed but not forgotten, place each pair in a transparent shoebox. Shopping for brogues: Brogue detailing isn’t today restricted to the classic style of an oxford shoe. You’ll find loafers, ballerina flats, boots and pumps with brogue detailing too.

experience

By Christina Maria Paschyn

JANUARY 2012 / 63

“I’m not supposed to weigh this much,” I whimpered to myself as I stared at the scale beneath my feet. The number displayed taunted me, a deflating sign that I had just officially wiped away nearly a year’s worth of hard-shed sweat.

Last February I embarked on an intense fitness and nutrition regime that helped me to drop about 15 pounds in seven weeks, all so I could look slim on my wedding day. Losing it wasn’t the hard part; it was the struggle to maintain that weight loss in the months leading up to my big day that truly tested my resolve to deny my naturally large appetite. But maintain it I did, until the day after my wedding, when I then embarked on an equally intensive week of celebratory binge eating. Stupidly, I was surprised to see that I shot up five pounds in those fleeting seven days, but I brushed off any concerns. In a few days time I would be travelling to Doha to start a new career. “Five pounds is nothing! I’ll just re-lose them in Qatar, how hard can it be?” I convinced myself. Thirty days later, the answer proved a resounding “very.” Not only did I not lose those five pounds, I also gained 13 more. That’s three more than I started with eight months ago! The reason for my weight gain is probably obvious to many expatriates living in Qatar: temptation lurks around every corner here. From fast food delivery to those many work lunches catered oh-so-deliciously by high-end hotels, it’s amazing anyone can avoid gorging on fatty and sugary foods every day. And let’s not forget the city’s ridiculously high-priced gym memberships and lack of pedestrian-friendly streets. Is it any wonder that studies show Qatar is one of the tubbiest nations in the world? A recent report from the International Association 64 / JANUARY 2012

for the Study of Obesity found that roughly 35% of adult men and 45% of adult women in Qatar were obese in 2003; experts predict the rate will climb to 69% of men and 73% of women by 2015. The survey focused on the native population; but cultural, economic or genetic variances aside, I wouldn’t be surprised if a study showed that Qatar’s foreign residents are facing a similar health crisis. Qataris and expats eat a lot here, and a public embrace of proper portion size and moderate daily exercise has yet to be seen.

classes were my salvation when I was struggling to lose weight back in America. Forget solitary workout videos, I found success in a room full of equally out-of-shape peers. The camaraderie one develops with similarly motivated individuals is addictive, and besides, no one wants to risk the disapproval of strangers by giving up during the middle of a workout. Needless to say, I am relieved that I have discovered several group classes in Doha that won’t do a number on my bank balance.

Getting Fit So how does one go about shedding the notorious Doha dozen, as many expatriates who have packed on the pounds since moving here like to call it? It’s not easy. As I wrote, it’s nearly impossible to walk anywhere in the city without careening into construction and oncoming traffic, or realising that the sidewalk has suddenly disappeared under your feet. And for those of us living on modest wages, spending hundreds of dollars a month for a hotel gym membership is simply not an option. Even the somewhat more moderately-priced Fitness First in City Center mall seems extortionary when you know that fitness chains charge just $25 (less than a hundred riyals) a month back in the States. Despite these obstacles, it is indeed possible to develop an effective fitness regime in Doha. Many of us are lucky enough to live in housing complexes that provide a pool and gym. But if you can’t bring yourself to hit the elliptical machine every morning – and I most certainty can’t – you should try your hand at the many group fitness classes offered around the city. Group

The options My favourite is Step A02; it is by far one of the best workouts I have ever experienced. In this high-energy aerobic class, you get to semi-dance your way on and around a compact platform. Don’t worry if you’re not the most coordinated; it doesn’t matter how you look or if you are following the routine step-by-step. After a while, you’ll become so engrossed by the fist-pumping music that you won’t even care. More importantly, you’ll finish feeling like you’ve melted away pounds of fat. My face has never been so red after a workout, and I loved it; it’s a high that keeps me coming back for more. But the best part: Step class at the InterContinental Hotel in Doha only costs QR 40 for nonmembers. And since you aren’t locked into a costly year-long membership, you won’t feel like you’re wasting your money if you need to miss a class. The Intercon also offers other classes worthy of your effort, including the dance-tastic Body Groove, Circuit Training, which probably gives you the most calorie burn for your buck, and Kickfit, a martial arts body workout.

GLAM

Another class I worship nearly as much as Step is Body Pump, offered at the Ritz-Carlton Doha. This one is pricier – QR75 per session for non-members. But it really is a Godsend; it’s the only way I can lift weights without begrudging the tedious repetitions. Body Pump is both cardio and strength training, so you’re not only burning fat but also chiselling your physique and toning muscle. The latter shouldn’t alarm women; it won’t bulk you up, but it will help you to define your arms, legs and abs. At the very least, Body Pump will rev up your metabolism since strength training keeps your muscles active long after you have finished your workout, helping you to burn extra calories throughout the course of your day without even trying! Cardio, for the most part, limits you to the calories you burn during a particular session, so you always need to include both in your fitness regime. Perhaps the thought of driving to some distant hotel through Doha traffic is putting you off from lacing up your gym shoes. I get it. I live five minutes away from the Intercon and Ritz, and I still can’t be bothered to start my car’s engine. So don’t. You probably are wasting gas and time when there’s a good chance your own housing complex offers a few fitness classes of its own, albeit unofficially perhaps. Living at the PearlQatar, I was blessed to find a group of like-minded women also desperate for easy-to-access fitness classes, and now they’ve started their own. I don’t have to leave the Pearl’s marina to find a Step, Kickfit or Yoga class. There’s even a boot camp that I attend twice a week. So start asking around, you never know who might eager to share their skills.

Bite-sized changes So that’s the fitness side of the game, but what about nutrition? It’s been the hardest thing to master for me. I love food – I mean I really love food, especially chocolate, ice cream and any kind of dessert you can imagine. And I never want to stop at just one bite. There are life coaches and nutrition experts available in Doha to help you learn how to eat healthily, such as the Art of Abundant Living. But in my case, I’ve gone back to my pre-wedding diet: no more than 1200 calories a day. After I achieve my goal,

EXPERIeNCE

I will boost that figure to 1500 or so. I am determined to drop 15 pounds and keep it off, and I am fully aware that means watching what I eat, because all the exercise in the world won’t help me unless I cut my food intake as well. Will I stumble? Yes. Will I cave to temptation? Of course. I no longer have a big event to truly motivate me to get fit. But maybe that means my weight loss will stick this time. There is no ‘end’ in sight; I am at the beginning of a lifestyle change. Yes, that may be difficult to achieve in Doha, with the array of luxury treats always on display at hotel brunches and malls. But one thing I have come to realise is that no food is ever worth the extra pounds; and that is particularly true in Doha where, for me, no dessert has ever truly lived up to expectation. That may not be enough to keep me from tasting, but it is enough to keep me from binging. Eating properly takes discipline, a behavioural change that is ongoing in my life. I have made progress. I am halfway to achieving my weight loss goal, and I hope my story proves inspirational. If losing weight is one of your New Year’s resolutions, don’t fret that you’re embarking on this challenging task as an expat in Qatar. Yes, you will encounter snags and pitfalls, but the country also has a burgeoning community of fitness buffs to help get you back on track. Anyone can drop the Doha dozen, but it takes patience, determination, and occasionally busting a move in front of people you barely know. (Christina will be writing about her Doha fitness pursuit in GLAM over the next few months) JANUARY 2012 / 65

Get on track, stay on track. By Nicole Van Hattem

My top

6 ways to get on track

and stay on track Think long-term

Short fix diets don’t work long term. They leave you feeling deprived and restricted, often don’t accommodate challenging lifestyle and health style conditions, and in some cases can leave you nutritionally depleted. Make changes that are sustainable. Make changes that will create long term health and wellbeing – what do you want to think, feel and look like when you are 80 years old (or this time next year)? Now make conscious changes that will create this future vision of yourself. 66 / JANUARY 2012

Practice the 80/20 rule

Perfection is impossible. We humans are already perfectly imperfect so stop trying to be anything else but human. This said, it is still important to do your best to have the level of health and vitality that you deserve. Aim to make excellent health choices 80% of the time, and the remainder of the time, make good decisions and be kind to yourself.

Put away the scales

If you must weigh yourself, only do it in the presence of a friend or health professional and only once a week. Keep it in perspective – focus on how your body feels, not what number appears on a machine. Measuring your sense of worth based on the measure given by a machine is counterproductive. You’re too smart for that – so take control and put the scales away.

GLAM

HEALTH & FITNESS

How many New Year’s resolutions in the past have contained goals related to your physical health: lose weight, increase exercise, eat more fruits and vegetables, less fat, cut alcohol or caffeine, drink more water, cook more, eat less? How long have each of these new resolutions lasted? No doubt you had some things that worked well for you and others things that didn’t. Make 2012 the year that you do things a little differently and achieve lasting results in your health and wellbeing. In my own life and in my health practice, I’ve found that these are the tips and tricks that create sustainable success.

FOOD CHOICES

More of these (top 5): 1. Drink water (minimum 2 litres) 2. Eat regular small meals and snacks 3. Vegetables and fruits (whole, unprocessed) and eat the rainbow of colours 4. Whole grains, vegetable proteins, nuts, seeds, greens 5. Home prepared and raw foods

Move your body

Less of these (top 5): 1. Animal foods (meat, seafood, poultry, dairy, eggs) 2. Wheat and sugar 3. Caffeine and nicotine 4. Chemicalised or artificial:flavours, colours, sweeteners 5. Processed or packaged and restaurant/takeaway foods

I didn’t’ say exercise – I said move! You don’t need to go to a fitness class, spend lots of money or equipment or go out of your way to make movement happen. Of course, these are options that might work for you, but what about just putting your iPod on and dancing while you make dinner or watch TV, sing your lungs out when you are driving to work or doing the school run, walk with your friends in the park instead of meeting up for a drink, do an online yoga or exercise class, or just walk up and down the steps in your home each day. Don’t make a big deal of moving – just do something you enjoy every day. You were designed to eat and to enjoy it. Food touches on all our senses – sight, taste, touch, smell and even hearing. Of course I’m talking about food here, and not junk. Processed, chemicalised, artificial food-like options are not food – they are business! Billions of dollars are spent worldwide each year to market products to you that are not good for your health. Wake up and eat – eat real food: whole, natural, pure and where possible organic and raw. If you don’t know how to shop for healthy options or prepare them – find out. Get knowledge, get skills, get healthy.

Eat

Support network

Studies have proven that when we are made accountable, we are much more likely to take action. Join a health group (online or in your local community) or create your own, get an accountability partner: use a health coach, a friend or colleague who will challenge you. Set several achievable and meaningful goals, communicate these to your support network, track your progress and remember to have motivating and healthy ways to reward yourself for making permanent changes. Make 2012 the year that you got on track and stayed on track. Follow these tips and next New Year you will be celebrating sustainable health.

Expert Tips Nail Tip

Keep your nails looking great in between your salon visits by applying a cuticle oil. CND Solar Oil (QR65) is the market leader containing sweet almond oil, vitamin E, rice bran oil and jojoba to nourish and moisturize the nails and the surrounding skin.

Hair Tip

The wintry weather can be damaging on your hair, regular intensive salon treatments will keep it glossy and healthy all year round. Can’t make it to the salon? Invest in a hair masque and apply it once a week to clean, damp hair and let it work its magic with you relax with a good book or enjoy a movie, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Skin Tip

Gone are the days of

your beautiful French manicure chipping in a day or smudging your perfectly polished toes inside your shoes. Gel polishes are the new manicure must-have. In a nutshell, you have the ease of a normal polish application cleverly mixed with the staying power of a gel which is perfect for us busybees. Most services begin with a basic manicure where your nails are prepped. The application of gel polish does not require your nail plate to be buffed--no buffing means no damage. The application follows the same concept as the application of a polish, base coat, two coats of colour and then finished with your top coat. Remember, this is a mixture of a gel and a polish so it will seem a little thicker than what you are used to. The big difference is that each layer of polish that is applied to your nails is ‘set’ under a UV or LED lamp. What makes it so great is that once you remove your fingers or toes from the lamp your nails are dry and I don’t mean they are almost dry, I mean they are 100% set all the way through to the base layer! This means that as soon as you are done, your hands can dive straight into your handbag for your car keys or mobile phone. Feet can go directly into your

shoes with no worries of smudging. Waiting for your polish to dry is the downside of salon visits, and how many of us have left the salon only to go back five minutes later because we have damaged the polish? Those days are gone ladies! Another plus point of this hot new service is that the high gloss finish that you see glistening before you will last until you remove the polish and will not become dull at all so your manicure looks freshly applied even if it is one week old! Even more good news – your perfect power polish will last you up to two weeks or maybe even longer. This depends on what you do with your hands, for example if you swim everyday then this might decrease the longevity of the application. Removal is quick and easy but should always be done by a nail professional. Your technician will apply a wrap to your nail which has been soaked in acetone and after 10 - 15 minutes hey presto it’s all gone and you are ready to re-apply the next fabulous shade. Tip: Make sure your technician is using a full gel polish system with base coat, colour and top coat from the same brand. If they are mixed the end result might not be as good.

Prabal Gurung wants

beauty line Fashion designer Prabal Gurung has revealed his ambitions to launch a beauty line. With top fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry expanding their beauty portfolios this year and designers including Tom Ford launching eponymous cosmetic ranges, a make-up line seems to be a natural progression for a designer nowadays. Following the announcement that he’s designed new uniforms for employees at US Sephora stores, Gurung has revealed he could be the next designer to venture into the cosmetics industry. Speaking to Fashionista at the recent American preview of his Sephora uniform collection, Gurung explained that he’s “working on” making his ambition a reality. “Definitely,” he replied when the publication asked if he could envisage a beauty line. “Beauty is an extension of a brand. That’s definitely one of the goals. Being able to, let’s say, have a lipstick with your name...That would be amazing!” Gurung, whose designs offer an edgy take on traditional feminine wear, often pioneers beauty trends in his own catwalk shows.

FRom macarons to make-up: Ladurie announces cosmetics line

French luxury macaron brand Ladurie has announced the launch of a color cosmetics range. The Paris-based company, whose pastelcoloured macarons are feted across the globe, will be venturing into the realm of makeup. Entitled Les Merveilleuses de Ladurie (The Wonders of Ladurie) and created by Albion Cosmetics, the collection will include 20 different blush colors in the form of cameos as well as liquid foundation and lip colour. Ladurie’s decision to enter the cosmetics industry follows the launch in 2007 of a beauty line comprising items such as face and body cream using almonds (a key ingredient of their macarons) to moisturise the skin, as well as selling home fragrances and candles. This isn’t the first time a brand popular among those with a sweet tooth has entered the beauty industry. Earlier this year Cadbury chocolate teamed up with beauty company Anatomicals for a line of chocolate-inspired bath and body products including Chocolate Truffle Bath Crhme, Hazelnut Smoothing Body Scrub and Toffee Body Butter. www.laduree.fr

The post-Christmas period will see the release of a host of unusual new beauty products, including fashionista Daphne Guinness’s hotly awaited collaboration for MAC, which she has described as being inspired by “pigeon’s blood,” and Stella McCartney’s truffle-based scent L.I.L.Y. Read about the other important international beauty releases...

Stella McCartney L.I.L.Y Standing aside from the recent dominance of floral and fruity scents in the fragrance market, British fashion designer Stella McCartney recently announced the top note for her latest fragrance L.I.L.Y is truffle. The scent, which features notes of lily of the valley and oak moss, will launch exclusively in the UK at department store Selfridges January 26 before reaching other retailers February 15. It will begin selling worldwide as of March. www.stellamccartney.com/default

Nicki Minaj by O.P.I. Collection

Artist and prominent haute couture collector Daphne Guinness’s makeup line for cosmetics giant MAC was released in US stores December 26 before its international rollout in January 2012. Daphne was said to have been inspired by “pigeon’s blood” and “how the intricate wings of a butterfly resemble the images of deepest space” when creating the 24-piece line, which includes blushes, eyeliners and deep red lipsticks. www.maccosmetics.com

Spicebomb from Viktor & Rolf Amsterdam-based fashion house Viktor & Rolf will introduce its first men’s fragrance, entitled Spicebomb. As the counterpart to popular female fragrance Flowerbomb, Spicebomb features notes of chili, saffron, leather, bergamot, grapefruit, and pink pepper. The fragrance will launch exclusively January 23 at UK department store Harrods and Bijenkorf in the Netherlands. It will then be rolled out internationally, with a midFebruary debut in France and a March 1 launch in the US. www.viktor-rolf.com

Following in the footsteps of fellow musician Katy Perry and reality stars the Kardashians, rapper Nicki Minaj is the latest personality to work with nail giant O.P.I. Inspired by songs from Minaj’s debut album Pink Friday, names in the six-piece range of lacquers include “Metal 4 Life,” “Fly,” and “Save Me”, with shades including lime green, purple, metallics and glitters. The line will be available at O.P.I.’s US outlets from January before reaching European retailers including Sephora in February. www.opi.com

Calvin Klein Sheer Beauty Following from the success of the 2010-launched Beauty, a new edition called Sheer Beauty hits Calvin Klein fragrance stockists internationally in January. Sheer Beauty is aimed at younger women with a floral and fruity composition. The face of the fragrance, which will be available as an eau de toillette in 30, 50 and 100 ml bottles, is rising Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld. www.calvinkleininc.com/SelectLanguage.aspx

Gourmet perfume: Stella McCartney has announced the launch of her latest fragrance, which unusually features truffle as a top note. Entitled L.I.L.Y, the perfume will launch exclusively in the UK at department store Selfridges January 26 before reaching other retailers February 15. McCartney’s truffle choice seems surprising at a time when recent releases have been particularly fruity and floral (Rebelle by Rihanna, Versace Yellow Diamond, Nine West Love Fury). Master perfumer Jacques Cavallier of Firmenich, who worked with McCartney on her floral signature scent, Stella, explained his surprise at the decision. “The truffle was unusual, but I said OK to Stella,” he is quoted as saying.

“We used natural extract of truffle, and I actually told the suppliers we were working with that the extract was for a restaurant! I didn’t want to let people know what we were doing.” McCartney, who described the arrival of truffles at a dinner table as being 'sexy,' also revealed the sentimental meaning behind the fragrance’s name. “It comes from my dad’s nickname for my mum: ‘Linda I love you,’” explained the designer, speaking of Sir Paul McCartney’s moniker for his late wife Linda. L.I.L.Y also features notes of lily of the valley and oak moss. A body lotion and shower gel will also be available. www.stellamccartney.com

AROUND TOWN

Party people were given the ultimate treat when Deadmau5, the world’s leading electronic music act, descended upon Doha for one night of music mayhem. Club 7 in La Cigale was heaving with exited attendees who took the opportunity to share intimate surroundings with the legend, that is, Deadmau5. The event kicked off with household names Jared McCulloch, Paul Mendez and Roger Choueiry, who each warmed up the crowd with a mix of eclectic beats. It’s clear Deadmau5 relished his short stay in Qatar, as after the event, he revealed on his Facebook page: “Thanks for the cozy club gig Doha! I miss playing smaller venues like that...was a cool vibe.” The event, organised by Global DJs, is one of many gigs that has lured top acts to Qatari shores, with past performance highlights including Tiesto, David Guetta and DiabloV. KATE MOSS

16 January 1974, Capricorn Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

While the New Year may be the beginning of good tidings, it’s also time to work towards developing a new outlook as well. Abrasiveness and outright temper tantrums can cause problems for you, so try to manage that anger. Patience is the keyword here, both at work and at home.

Things are going to be smooth at the workplace, so look out for that glowing appraisal and equally glowing promotion. Make plans for a spring vacation, keeping in mind that you need the rest too!

Take some time off to focus on goals that need to be achieved in the New Year. This is also the time for personal recognition and a rich feeling of accomplishment. Revel in the joys of success.

Capricorn Virgo

Taurus

Be careful not to get caught in the crossfire if you meddle in the affairs of others. This is not to say that you should avoid aiding friends in need, but care should be taken that you don’t get caught in the fallout. A hobby could take your mind off your worries.

Planning is the key towards peace of mind this year. Avoid being argumentative and practise being flexible in your day-to-day activities. Money’s coming... so plan well and save for a rainy day.

Give special thought to learning more about a project that has become interesting to you before becoming more deeply committed. Give some thought to extensive travel, perhaps to a foreign destination, as this could become a reality soon.

Gemini

Libra

In matters of the heart, the beginning of the New Year may not be the way you want it to go. Tread softly and don’t jump to conclusions, as things may not be what they seem on the surface. A friend may have strong opinions so try and be tactful.

A friend in need is a friend indeed, is not just a cliche. A long-standing friend will come to your rescue, especially when the going gets tough. Money matters also require a lot of attention so think before you spend.

Problems relating to the health of those close to you could cause you some concern, but this is just a passing phase and this too shall pass. A strong creative urge could overwhelm you and cause you to produce some startling (to others) projects which will be well received.

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

A new project at the beginning of the year could lift your hopes or dash them, depending on how well you have done your homework. It’s also the time to pay close attention to financial and personal affairs. Avoid being secretive; openness always brings good results.

Love’s in the air... and Valentine’s Day plans begin well in advance. Plan a getaway with your significant other and bring the romance back into your relationship. A friend or co-worker may come to you with a declaration and bowl you over. All the best!

Daring, charm and a sense of the ridiculous could combine to take you to the top of the heap. This is true in the romantic arena, but could prove helpful in career matters. There could be some frustration causing disruptions in your household, but things should calm down and move back to normal.
