BRICKBATS Men’s Issues

Plaudits for your men’s section in May’s issue of GLAM; I showed my partner and he really enjoyed it – although, of course, he didn’t openly admit to liking a female magazine! Hopefully you can add in different sections like this more often, or maybe even dedicate a whole magazine to the boys! I know a lot of men that need fashion advice and could do with the helping hand. Cheers! Ruth Brutin

Luxurious Leather Hello, I’m a keen fashion enthusiast based in Dubai and I picked up a copy of GLAM when I was holidaying in Qatar. It was very interesting to read about Leonello Borghi – the man behind the Brigitte Bardot bag! Girls in Dubai are absolutely crazy about that bag and it is sold out here, but hey, I was lucky enough to pick mine up at the luxe boutique at The Pearl-Qatar; hooray! Heart GLAM. Elizabeth Harwell

Inside the Male Mind GLAM! I was intrigued by your man drawer article. I’ve always wondered about the mystery of this seemingly useless place where men store random things. Well, of course, it seems useless to us but is very precious to men! Good one! Neilofar Patel

VCU Fashion Show Marhaba GLAM – my fave glossy mag! I loved your coverage of the VCUQ student fashion show. Unfortunately I was travelling out of the country so wasn’t able to attend the show. I hope to see more of the upcoming local designers – there’s a lot of talent in Doha and you guys should def cover it... Reem Al-Sulaiti

Shopping Spree Shop till you drop is definitely my number one motto in life, so thanks for highlighting some good destinations to spend my cash! I think it would be really good if you ran some competitions with readers to go on a shopping trip to a fashion capital – London, New York or Paris. Hopefully this is something you can consider as I know a lot of fashionistas who would love a GLAM trip abroad! Fatma Dabaghy

British Birthday Happy Birthday Mulberry!! I was amazed to read that Mulberry turns 40 this year – that’s 40 years of exceptionally crafted leather lovelies! I think Creative Director Emma Hill has really taken the brand in a fresh direction with all the whimsical inspirations like the Secret Garden and Fantastic Mr. Fox; wonder what they’ll come up with next! Mulberry – a true icon of our times! Alice Garret

The hottest stories in the world of fashion and beauty Two Diana dresses sold for $276,000 Two dresses worn by the late princess Diana were sold at an auction house in Beverly Hills for a total of $276,000, the seller announced. According to Julien's auction house, the first dress – a black crepe evening gown with diamante paste embroidery on the short-sleeved top inspired by Indian motifs – went for $144,000. It was purchased for Diana's 1992 visit to India, when she accompanied her then-husband, Prince Charles on the trip. The second dress – a light blue silk chiffon, strapless, floor-length gown and accompanying stole – was sold for $132,000. It was worn by Diana three times, including at the Cannes film festival in 1987. The identities of the buyers have been kept confidential. (LOS ANGELES-AFP)

Riccardo Tisci confirming Dior design gig to friends Reputed fashion blog Fashionista is reporting that Givenchy's Italian designer is casually telling friends about his move to the French fashion house that recently lost its creative head John Galliano due to an anti-Semitism scandal. "He's also...openly discussing his move to Dior with certain acquaintances," writes editor Lauren Sherman. "And while we still don't think the official Dior announcement will happen until September, we're pretty sure the deal is sealed." The news would confirm persistent rumors within the fashion industry: following Galliano's ousting last Paris fashion week, Tisci was the most evident choice for many, with French designer Haider Ackermann expected to take his place at Givenchy. Tisci, who his known for his dark, gothic-inspired take on fashion, would certainly make for a big aesthetic change at Dior after Galliano's flowerily flamboyant years.

Cowell vS Cole! It wasn’t long ago that Simon Cowell referred to Cheryl Cole as “special”, and the two famously shared a close friendship on the judging panel on X factor. We’re unsure if that bond will ever be as strong since Cheryl’s shock sacking from the U.S version of X Factor after only four days of auditions. Rumors are rife that Cowell and Cole are at war with each other through their ‘people’. A lot of speculation has been ongoing whether the petite beauty will return to the judging panel of the UK edition of the success show. TV executives were supposedly trying to contact Cole to close a deal with her for the UK show, but Cole was not taking calls of anyone, including Cowell. Claims have been surfacing that Cheryl’s advisors demanded $4,000,000 for her to return to the UK show but that avenue has apparently been closed as ITV released an official statement confirming the new judging panel of the UK X Factor starring Tulisa Contostavlos from pop band N Dubz, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow from Take That and pop singer Kelly Rowland – no sign of Cole, ouch, talk about a double blow! 13

Trendwatch: animal printinspired makeup on the rise

Ralph Lauren appears on 'Oprah' in first TV interview in 20 years

Following the release of 'Violent Lips' zebra- or cheetah-print temporary lip tattoos and the growing popularity of leopard-print eye makeup, the master of animal print, Dolce & Gabbana, are jumping on the bandwagon with their new beauty collection Animalier.

There are only a few episodes left until the American "Queen of TV" retires from her show, but Oprah Winfrey is making sure she leaves with a bang as she sat down with designer Ralph Lauren for his first TV interview in two decades.

Inspired by the Italian designers' famed feline patterns, the range, which centers around a leopard-print bronzer, launches at the end of May. "What I especially love about the Animalier collection is that it is so versatile – there are no rules because the palette is so compatible," says D&G's makeup artist of choice, Pat McGrath. "Whether I choose to emphasize the eyes – smokey eyes are always so fierce, so sexy – or the warm luscious red lips, the look is ultimately pulled together by the fantastic Animalier Bronzer." "A bronzer is what spring and summer are about..." adds Domenico Dolce, who also says that for him, "it became an accessory as crucial as one of the Animalier bags."

The one-hour show was a great success featuring a ride in Lauren's vintage jeep from the 1940s and a private tour of the property including tepees furnished with antiques and whimsical artifacts is, which according to TV execs was"sure to make television viewers feel as though they have stepped inside a Ralph Lauren advertisement with the breathtaking views of the mountains of Telluride as the backdrop." Lauren's wife Ricky, and their three children Andrew, David, and Dylan also appeared on the show that aired on May 18.

Elie Saab launches first fragrance The wait is almost over: two years after the Lebanese designe announced his debut scent, the launch has been scheduled for this summer. Called simply Le Parfum, the fragrance developed by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian (Narciso Rodriguez For Her, Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier) will be available from July. Inspired by Saab's fashion DNA of red carpet creations, Kurkdjian came up with a flowery-woody composition of orange blossom, jasmine, cedar, patchouli, and rose honey that will come in 30, 50 and 90 ml eau de parfum bottles as well as matching body products. If the ad starring Anja Rubik in a New York street scene looks familiar, it might be because the supermodel also features in DKNY's current fragrance campaign, kissing her model boyfriend Sasha Knezevic on top of a New York taxi. http://www.eliesaab.com

Kate Moss exhibit opens in Paris There are few women in this world that have been photographed as much as the British supermodel and managed to remain a mystery at the same time. The Parisian Galerie de l'Instant is having another go at deciphering this mystery with a new exhibition that opens May 13. "Kate Moss par les plus grands photographes" (roughly translating to "Kate Moss through the lens of major photographers") traces Moss's career in pictures: starting with the legendary shots by Corinne Day, which made the model instantly famous, the display moves on throughout the 1990s during which the likes of Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindbergh and Ellen Von Unwerth portrayed her as the emblematic woman of the decade who was so different from the wholesome 'original supermodels' like Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer. Other featured photographers include Bert Stern, Rankin, Patrick Demarchelier and many more. The exhibition runs through September 14.

14-year-old actress becomes new face of Miu Miu Confirming earlier rumors, actress Hailee Steinfeld has been named the latest star to represent the Italian fashion label. A Prada spokesperson told E! News: "I can confirm Hailee Steinfeld has been shot to appear in the new Miu Miu fall/winter 2011 campaign." The young actress, who bagged an Oscar nomination for her role in True Grit, was one of the past award season's red carpet favorites, wearing everything from Prabal Gurung to Alberta Ferretti, but mostly opting for Prada's younger sister label Miu Miu. When she made a front row appearance at the brand's runway show in March, many were already speculating about her becoming its new face. Steinfeld follows in the footsteps of other quirky actresses such as Maggie Gyllenhaal or Kirsten Dunst, who also starred in the campaigns, as well as Carey Mulligan, who has been closely associated with Prada recently.

After China and Japan, fashion looks to India for inspiration In past seasons, brands including Givenchy, Burberry, and Chanel have been focusing on new markets with Japan or China-inspired collections and events, but it seems that slowly, fashion is targeting another Asian country: India, the home of Bollywood. Just last week, stars were seen sporting Indian-inspired headwear at the Met Ball's red carpet in New York: Australian Transformers actress Isabel Lucas paired her Louis Vuitton gown with a pearl-embellished piece that featured a striking medaillon; American model Britt Maren's hair jewelry was placed on the top center of her forehead, accentuating her sleek hairdo and complementing her Bollywood-esque golden robe; and Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba both wore Indian-inspired necklaces in their hair. Indian style was already popular in Western fashion in the 1990s when henna tattoos and bindis abounded thanks to artists including No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, and this week saw a few more events hinting at its comeback such as the Chanel resort show on May 9 in Antibes, southern France, where Karl Lagerfeld's favorite model Baptiste Giabiconi strutted down the beachy runway wearing an embellished turban and an outfit seemingly drawing on Indian menswear. But as always, fashion designers should be careful not to overdo the cultural referencing: a bathing suit featuring a print of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, shown by Australian label Lisa Blue during Sydney's fashion week, has caused angry protests in India, with outraged Hindus burning the Australian flag on the streets, according to the AFP.

Fashion’s

Greatest Darlings By Yousra Samir

As Hollywood star Blake Lively becomes the envy of all females in celebsville as Chanel’s new muse, we take a look back at some of history’s most unforgettable designer muses It has been a great couple of years for Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively. After a string of minor roles in coming-of-age films, Blake’s career finally took off when she landed the part of Upper East Side New York 'it' girl Serena, in hit American teen drama Gossip Girl. She’s the character that everyone can relate to, that everyone can imagine as their best friend; and that goes for real life too. Once Vogue U.S. editor and fashion matriarch Anna Wintour spotted her, she had Blake under her wing and made sure that Blake was seated at the front row of all the fashion shows. So it was only a matter of time before a big couture house fell in love with her and snapped her up as their muse. Blake, who recently made Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people, is no other than Chanel’s latest muse, joining the ranks of other famous Chanel muses like Vanessa Paradis, Keira Knightley, Lilly Allen and Audrey Tatou. She is also the face of the Mademoiselle bag, which Karl Lagerfeld hopes will gain more popularity with the young, fresh-faced Blake at the front of the ad campaign. Her luscious Californian blonde locks and endless legs would look good with any bag. With a celeb-studded Chanel party held in her honour back in March of this year, it looks like Blake is a firm member of the Chanel family. Some other designer muses who inspired and fronted covetable collections (and not all of them are models and actresses)... 22

legends

Jerry Hall Legendary supermodel and ex-wife of rocker Mick Jagger Jerry Hall has been a muse for many designers, but most notably Yves Saint Laurent during the 1970s, and Thierry Mugler in the 1990s, both of whom she formed lasting friendships with. Yves Saint Laurent was Jerry’s very first fashion show in what was to lead to an outstanding modelling career. She was the face of Opium d’Yves Saint Laurent throughout the 1970s and 1980s and the second face of Angel by Thierry Mugler from 1995 to 1998. And at the age of 54, she shows no signs of slowing down just yet.

Audrey Hepburn In perhaps one of the most famous designer-muse relationships of all time, the story of how Audrey Hepburn became Givenchy’s muse goes that Hubert de Givenchy received a message saying that a Miss Hepburn was in his shop waiting for a dress fitting. Expecting to meet legendary Hollywood starlet Katherine Hepburn, he emerged and to his surprise found a waiting Audrey. The two hit it off straight away and formed a close relationship. Audrey became Givenchy’s muse, famously modelling his black shift dress creation in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a look that countless women have tried to re-create over the decades.

Grace Jones Supermodel and singer Grace Jones is by no doubt one of the original creators of disco. Remembered for her androgynous look and for being a frequent face at New York club Studio 54, designer Azzedine Alaia loved her and made her his muse. One memorable event was in 1984 when Grace carried Alaia in her arms onstage to receive a French fashion award! 23

LEGENDS Diana, Princess of Wales

Iman The fifty-year-old beauty and Somali-American supermodel has been a muse to many designers - Issey Miyake, Donna Karan and Gianni Versace to name a few, but like Jerry Hall, she was a major muse for Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s and 1980s and the face of his “African Queen” collection. “My dream woman is Iman,” said Laurent of her. Iman, who was one of the first AfricanAmerican women to pave a career in modelling, said of her time with Laurent, “ Yves Saint Laurent is a master innovator. I had the privilege to have been his muse at one collection, so he cut the fabric on my body. Fashion would be nothing and nowhere without Yves Saint Laurent.”

Isabella Blow The late magazine editor and international style icon was the muse of both late designer Alexander McQueen and hat designer Philip Treacy. Having led an extraordinary life, Isabella is remembered for her eccentric style (as well as for purchasing McQueen’s entire degree collection). Always convinced that she was ugly, Isabella would wear a Treacy hat to cover her face and bright red lipstick. MAC designed a red lipstick in honour to her. 24

The late and sorely missed Princess Diana was a muse to countless designers who all tried to get Diana seen wearing one of their creations. Of those many designers, the most precious musedesigner relationships she had were between herself and Valentino, Christian Lacroix and also the late British designer Catherine Walker. Walker designed over one thousand custom made garments for Diana to wear, and saw Diana’s style evolve from a young woman to the years prior Diana’s death.

Sofia Coppola The Golden Lion – winning director, screenwriter and actress is Marc Jacobs’ long time friend and muse. 'She is young and sweet and beautiful. The epitome of this girl I fantasize of,' said Marc Jacobs of her. Her classic, laid-back style is the epitome of Marc Jacobs’ collections. Sofia appeared totally naked as the face for Marc’s signature scent Blush and it seems she has no qualms about her body as she went topless for the 2008 Miss Dior Cherie ad campaign.

How long have you been working in fashion – is this the career you always imagined? I’ve been working in the industry for over eight years. As a child I saw myself as an architect – it was the obvious choice as both my parents maintain that profession. I developed an interest in object design as a teenager and slowly it changed into fashion. You started your fashion line in Paris, 2008; tell us about your collection... Yes, I have a showroom in Paris and try to get back there every six months. My favourite sources of inspiration are books and films. For S/S 11 I used images of smoke patterns mixed with the image of David Bowie. For my latest A/W 11 collection I collected prints from video installations made by Pipilotti Rist and Sigmar Polke. What is the usual design process of each garment? First I brain-storm a topic of interest – it could be anything. Then I collect images surrounding this topic, generating colors, shapes and textures. Once I’ve gathered all the required information I draw an overview of the entire collection which usually consists of about 20 silhouettes. I then spread them into individual garments and work on specific details.

Is there any significant material or unique techniques you use? I try to mix classic materials like silk, wool and cashmere with more technical weavings or micro meshing. Most of the fabric I use is sourced in London. What celebrities own a piece from your collection? I created some exclusive pieces for Rihanna and Toni Braxton after being commissioned by each of their stylists! How would you describe a woman who wears your collection? Sexy, sharp and very independent. Describe your personal sense of style... A vigilante with effortless commitment to all things classic – mixed with hand-me-downs and heirlooms. What fashion advice do you offer women? Don’t be afraid to try something on – most of the time it is something you think you’d never wear that fits you best. Who is your style icon? Grace Jones because of forceful presence and intimidating angular beauty; and David Bowie – he is the most iconic dandy. Where is your collection available? ‘The number 4’ in Kuwait, ‘Baluba’ in the UK, ‘Creatures Fashion’ in Hong Kong and ‘Opening Ceremony’ in the US. Hopes and ambitions? I’ts my ultimate ambition to expand globally and introduce a fashion line for discerning males too. For info visit juanhernandezdaels.com

This Alexander McQueen dress ticks all the boxes! The cropped butterfly sleeves are perfect for those who feel self-conscious about baring their arms, plus they are roomy enough to wear a long-sleeved top underneath if you want more coverage. A full-length gown like this will conceal your shoes, so why not channel Lanvin’s spring 2011 runway show and pair with flat sandals for ultimate comfort and style. Finish with a skinny belt to define your waist. Alexander McQueen is at The Pearl-Qatar

1560 Erin Fetherston Edith leather and lace jacket One of my top tips when shopping previous season fashion online is to choose a multi-brand retailer because you might discover a label you weren’t aware of. Erin Fetherston is a cool up-and-coming New York designer and this leather and lace jacket nods to two key looks of the season. Wear it with a vibrant silk tee to let a pop of colour peek out.

Another look to invest in is pleats and folds. Burberry Prorsum knotted skirts from Christopher Bailey’s SS10 show were so popular last year and are still relevant now because trends stay the same for a few seasons. That makes this skirt an unbelievable find! Nod to the iconic Jill Sander SS11 show and pair this statement piece with a simple white tee. Get festival chic! It’s that time of the year again when everyone dons their best outdoor fashion to rock to the summer’s music festivals. Whether you’re going to Glastonbury or a beach bash on the InterCon beach, don’t get stuck in a boring anorak and your old wellies (or make that flip-flops if you are going to be rocking out in Doha). Yousra Samir on how to get festival chic.

If you are thinking

about hitting the shores of the British Isles for some festival fun this summer, whether for the Isle of Wight Festival (June 10-12), Glastonbury (June 22-26), or the V Festival (Aug 20-21), your main concern will be being fashionable while remaining practical. In particular, you are going to want to safeguard your outfit against the evil outfitdestroying perils of rain and mud. Many high street stores are selling raincoats with trendy prints which can be folded up so small that they fit into your bag. 42

Thinking about investing in a pair of wellington boots? Don’t opt for your usual black or murky green farmer’s type. Many stores are offering chicer options in this season’s on-trend bold colours. Hunter wellingtons are the current celebrity must-haves.

Not a fan of wellies? You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of brown leather lace-up boots. Ankle-high or knee-high– we'll leave the decision up to you. A pair of Doc Martins are also a reliable option to get you through those mud infested journeys.

GLAM

FASHION

Celebrity festival fashion Kate Moss The effortlessly cool Kate Moss is irrefutably the Queen of festival chic. Never without her Hunter boots, Mossy’s signature festival style is rock ‘n’ roll meets vintage; a pair of hotpants teamed with a simple tee, belt and vintage jacket or waistcoat, or even better, a poncho.

If you are going

Stuck for outfit ideas?

What about accessories?

to be in sunny Chicago for Lollapalooza (Aug 5-7), or staying here in Doha where there is bound to be many a beach bash on the InterCon beach, wellies are obviously not what you are looking for. Neither are flip-flops. Keep your feet cool whilst being fashionable by jamming in a pair of gladiator sandals, or an on-trend pair of wedges. And don’t forget to keep your toenails in tip top shape too with a pedicure and a summery shade of nail polish.

Go for laid-back romantic with a floral maxi skirt and plain white tee, or a jumpsuit or playsuit in one of this season’s tribal prints. Always cool on the festival scene is vintage, so pair a vintage top or dress (or vintage-inspired if it’s not actually vintage) with skinny jeans. For a classic look that never goes out of fashion, channel Kate Moss and opt for a plain tank top or tee over denim shorts or hotpants and knee high boots or wellies.

Satchels and saddle bags equal boho cool. Add tough-luxe belts to your denim and pile on the friendship bracelets. A vintage looking pendant can transform a simple tee and denim shorts combo. And don’t forget statement rings – just one statement ring can be enough to not need any other jewellery. If you’re brave, stack those fingers up with more than one ring.

Fearne Cotton

Alexa Chung

Everybody’s favourite UK radio DJ and TV presenter Fearne never fails to impress with her quirky sense of style. When it comes to festival fashion, it’s all about print with Fearne – polka dot dresses and floral print tees paired with striped shorts. Her fun accessory choices include bowler hats, Converse sneakers and military boots.

Alexa’s signature preppy style even extends to her festival look. Breton stripes on top teamed with denim shorts or skinnies, knee-high wellies and a biker jacket, or an open utility shirt over a summery playsuit are just a couple of her favourite festival looks.

what confuses mEn about women 46

GLAM

Rory Coen sets out to answer that question. An interesting one, he says, but where does he start?

What’s beyond my comprehension is a lady’s love for shopping. For me, it’s a detestable chore. One which I do twice a year, or in times of extreme necessity. I buy clothes on a need-to-wear basis; if I don’t need them, I don’t go shopping. In fact I don’t think I have ever wanted an item of clothing in my life. Women – on the other hand – buy clothes like they’re just coming in to fashion – to switch the analogy. It’s a hobby, a past-time, or a way of life even; it sustains their very being. A month without it and they feel they’re dressing like cave-women, totally out of touch with contemporary style. To look “chic” is essentially their license to exist. There are three kinds of female-shoppers as far as I can see. The first group can afford whatever they desire and the price tag doesn’t entertain them. If they like it, they’re buying it, simple as that. Then you have the group who

MALE MIND

can’t necessarily afford it, but they just have to have it, and her credit card will facilitate this uncontrollable thrust. And the third kind are the ones who can’t afford anything, until there’s a “Sale – 75% off!” sign hanging above the shop entrance. They will loiter around malls and stores, beady-eyed, waiting for their opportunity to purchase the item they have had their eye on for weeks. I went out to Landmark recently – in a moment of weakness - to buy some pairs of pants for work. Mention of my shopping excursion at work the following day was met with utter surprise by a colleague of mine, and she exclaimed “Nobody goes there to actually buy clothes!” “Why do they go there?” I asked, wondering if we were talking about the same shopping mall. “They just go there to hang out and to browse through the shops.” The first group are an impulsive breed; they live in the moment. They purchase items of clothing on a whim and with impunity; they rush them home with excitement, and hang them from a horizontal pole in their wardrobe. But the impulse doesn’t always return. It’s this need to accessorise that has them in this hoop really. Every handbag has to have a pair of shoes, bracelet and belt to match. My sister-in-law came out of the restroom at a restaurant recently and her belt fell to the floor. Her jeans didn’t budge. It was one of those big, shiny, pink belts too; one which you’d swear had a practical function. She looked around sheepishly and re-applied it to her outfit thinking nobody saw this phenomenon. Men of course are different in their ways, but women cannot understand this. I came back from a recent trip abroad and another colleague asked me if I had time to do any shopping. I unwittingly gave her a doubletake, such was my surprise. Shopping – in the female sense of the word – was the last thing I was going to do during my downtime on a business-trip.

Next stop, Amsterdam Seeking street fashion... Holland is known for its picturesque and almost sleepy villages along the water, its myriad of multicoloured tulip fields, its many canals and the magnificent homes lining these water wonderlands. More than just the revered paintings by Van Gogh or Rembrandt. But the years have slowly been opening up this small country into a veritable pool of fashion talent, where the local sober Dutch embrace all the finesse and je ne sais quoi of Parisian chic or the trendy-edgy fashion following of the British lasses. By Marlene Naickar

hatever the choice one thing is for certain, Dutch girls with their peachy complexions, long limbs, lustrous hair and length add an allure to the streets of Amsterdam in summer. As it is in summer the fashion wave hits high, and life loses it monotone of sombre dark colours and embraces a flurry of reds, oranges, whites and neutral pastels. But there are distinctive styles: Women here border on the practical – a bag should be cross shouldered as it is easy to manoeuvre on the bikes, leggings, dresses and often trainers instead of Jimmy Choo or Louboutin the years have softened this though as there is also a new breed of fashionistas emerging-bling and ladylike chic bringing glamour to the porous cobbled canals. For this edition we feature the glamorous style blogger Anna, Publicist Caroline, Styletoday fashionistas Noortje and Chantal and get a glimpse into their cupboards, their most revered possessions and their FAVOURITE things to do in this cosmopolitan city called Amsterdam!

Fireworks All The Way

Katy Perry seems to have overcome the short phase of tweeting sad notes (or was it just breaking news to be in news!) after the deportation of hubby Russell Brand from Tokyo. Russell, who was accompanying her on her hugely followed California Dreams world tour, was denied entry into Tokyo on the grounds of having a criminal record. Back to being her, Katy is working hard on what she is good at, turning out hugely successful tours! Carrying simple looks when not on stage, Perry was born as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California. Her exhilarating second album ‘Teenage Dream’ finds Katy drawn back to home. “I love the vibe that Santa Barbara gives off and I wanted to really tap into the purity of my childhood and that feeling,” says the two-time Grammy nominated singer. “It was really fun to get away and walk into the studio with no make-up on.”

55

The rise of a star She grew up listening to gospel music and practiced on tape records after her sister. Putting herself through vocal training and studying Italian Opera for a short duration of time, Katy’s voice and enthusiasm caught the attention of veterans of country music who taught her writing skills and guitar at the age of sixteen. Start of the career saw her recording unnoticeable soundtracks. Refusing to stay as ‘also ran’ in her deal with the Columbia Records, the big leap for Katy came when she sold 5 million copies of her debut Capitol Records blockbuster – ’One of the Boys’. Since the 2008 release of 'One of the Boys,' Katy has taken a jet-fuelled rocket pack to the top, wowing fans with her often whimsical, irresistible pop songs. Introducing her to the highly competitive music market and establishing her image were the immediate concerns of her management. Katy topped the charts in more than 25 countries with her phenomenal numbers – ’I Kissed a Girl’ ‘Hot N Cold’, ‘Thinking Of You’ and ‘Waking Up in Vegas’ and has sold more than 22 million digital tracks and mobile products worldwide. Seldom has an artist catapulted onto the world scene and captured not only people’s ears, but their hearts as well, with a faithful fan following of 7,582,168 Twitter fans! The album has reached number nine on the Billboard 200 and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. ‘I Kissed a Girl’ earned Perry a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Teenage Dreams

GLAM

FASHIOnISTA

After the huge of success of her first debut album, Perry recorded ‘Teenage Dream’ that was released in August 2010. “When I was touring, I wanted people to dance more,” Katy says. “So I wrote an album that made people move, yet didn’t sacrifice the story substance that I had on the last record.” The first single from the album – ’California Gurls’, declared by Entertainment Weekly as unforgettable is the undeniable summer anthem of 2010. Featuring Snoop Dogg, ‘Gurls’ is a sizzling salute to sun-kissed days spent in Daisy Dukes and a bikini top. The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the fastest rising single from a Capitol Records artist since Bobbie Gentry’s ‘Ode to Billie Joe’ in 1967. Other album highlights include the heartbreakingly wistful ‘The One that Got Away’, the naughty, playful strut of ‘Peacock’, the uplifting ‘Firework’, the pulsing, stinging ‘Circle the Drain’ and the spiritual quest of ‘Who Am I Living For’. The album showcases an artist who dares us to join her as she experiences every facet of life. And then, of course, there’s the passionate, thumping title track. “I called the album ‘Teenage Dream’ because I feel like I will always want to be that pin-up poster,” Katy says. “I definitely want to be in everybody’s dreams at all times until I get to Liz Taylor’s age when I’m not in your dreams anymore, and I’m just a diva!” Its irreverent statements like this that have branded Katy a true American original. She’s often described as the extremely talented girl next door with slyly captivating charm.

The Concert Queen, the Diva! Nowhere is Katy’s voice and vision clearer than in a concert. As a newcomer, she stormed the Warped Tour stage for 47 dates in 2008. Since then, she has steadily built audiences across the planet by touching down in more than two dozen countries and filling increasingly larger venues each time she returned to a city. 2009’s headlining ‘One of the Boys’ tour was a phenomenal success, selling out around the world. Currently she is busy wooing fans in her colossal ‘The California Dream’ tour 2011 that will cover North America, Europe, South America, Australia and Japan. She’s also a popular television draw, presenting and performing on the Grammys living out her lifelong dream of being lowered from the ceiling in a 600 lb. banana, serving as a guest judge on ‘American Idol’, a celebrity contestant on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and hosting MTV’s Europe Music Awards twice. More often than not she’s adding to her trophy case at each stop, winning Best New Act at the Europe Music Awards, Best Pop Video at the MTV Japan Awards and International Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards. “If you ever want an answer about how I felt about something or what I was going through or what I believe or my convictions or my love,” says Perry. “You just have to listen to the lyrics.” 57

Show Stopping: The most expensive piece from Sarah Reece Jewellery is the enamelled sea horse which is the result of weeks of craftsmanship.

Vivacious jewellery designer, Sarah Reece, is a rising star on Doha’s craft circuit. The London born designer moved to Doha six months ago and has since been busy establishing her business, Sarah Reece Jewellery, consisting of intricate handmade designs. “I think there is a huge gap in the Qatari market for contemporary jewellery so I’m really excited about business here. I’m all about hand-made designs,” reveals Sarah. Sarah has been passionate about jewellery since childhood but because of the competitiveness and cost, she opted for an academic career path,

studying Arabic and English before attending the London Guildhall University to complete a course in jewellery design. “Unless you’re very lucky, a career in fashion takes years of hard work and struggles to make ends meet – I wanted an academic degree as backup.” Sarah’s collection comprises beautifully crafted rare designs, and instead of following a seasonal pattern, she creates one off treasures along with specific client requests. “Most of the stones I use are sourced from different parts of the world. My husband and I usually seek a holiday destination which has a stone native to that country for me to explore, and scuba diving facilities for him!” Creating jewellery comes so naturally to Sarah that she implements what’s in her mind without the aid of sketches. “Drawing has never been my strong point, and often things look very different on a page to what they do when they’re crafted. When I’m commissioned to make a piece, I usually make prototypes for customers or update them as I go along. I have endless ideas in my mind which I’m so grateful for.” Sarah spends hours painstakingly crafting each piece with some designs requiring weeks of dedicated craftsmanship. “I’m at home all day creating jewellery in my studio which can

It is good to network at craft fairs which are held regularly – it allows me to meet other like-minded people in the creative industry.” A show stopping piece from the range is the enamelled sea horse which was created as part of a jewellery course. “The enamelled sea horse consumed weeks of craftsmanship as every single grain of glass had to be carefully placed – it is a very precious to me and I’m a little reluctant to sell it!” Sarah Reece Jewellery is available at Six Senses Spa, Sharq Village, and Moda Key Boutique. You maintain a few positions in Doha? Yes, I’m a DJ which is my passion and also CEO of Global DJs & Finland Advertising. As a DJ, I’ve spun all over the globe...Miami, Los Angeles, UK and some parts of Asia. As an events organiser, I’m responsible for hosting large scale events with A-list DJs and music artists. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the biz and have recently started an artist management/booking agency (AfterDarkAM) which consists of booking DJs & Artists around the world but primarily in the Middle East. Sounds great – how’s it all going so far? It is going really well – some people would say I kicked off the music scene here in terms of clubbing, parties etc. I did my first event in 2006 and have done over 100 so far with people including Tiesto, David Guetta, Bryan Adams to name a few... It seems like the music scene has come a long way since 2006... Before 2006, there was no scene at all. Over the years I have built this with the help of Paul Mendez and Sam World. I was the first to bring an International DJ to Qatar, the first to host large scale dance events, the first to do pool parties, desert parties and the first to host an international music festival. I always strive to bring the best and do my best for the scene in Qatar by offering new and exciting events. Have you always envisioned working in the music scene since you were a child? I have wanted to be a DJ since I was 13 and everything else kind of evolved from that. What events, big acts, can Qatar look forward to this year? I can’t really say, it would be a spoiler but we have to massive shows penned in for the end of the year. Is there anything in particular you think Qatar is missing in terms of entertainment, and that you’re planning on introducing? Qatar is missing a lot to be honest but I’m certain that everything will fall into place with time. We plan to introduce many new concepts as we do every year but I really can’t give too much away! Who is your personal favourite artist? It has to be Tiesto. I have known him since 1998 – it has been amazing watching him start out as a small DJ and ending up as the greatest ever

famous friends: Jared hanging out with one of his biggest DJ icons – Tiesto. DJ. He is such an inspiration and has never changed since day one – never forgetting where he started. He has done many firsts in the DJ industry and sells out everywhere he goes. You must meet a lot of famous people and attend amazing events – what has been the biggest highlight? One of the biggest was when I did David Guetta in April 2010; I got a phone call from Valentino Rossi who wanted to come down and hang out at the event – I thought it was great partying

with Guetta & Rossi that night! You DJ at 7 in La Cigale on Thursday evenings – what advice can you give to budding DJs? Be yourself, work hard, respect other DJs no matter what level they are at and of course – practice makes perfect. I would also suggest that if you are buying equipment, always get industry standard gear that most DJs use; for example CDJ 2000’s or 1000’s and learn how to DJ without the use of computers before you start using one because that’s a big no in my book. 63

What the stars foretell...

Angelina Jolie June 4 1975; Gemini Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Get set for an exciting month, Aries! Work, love, life, whatever, it’s your time to shine. So make sure you make the right moves. All that you’ve been craving for the past few months will finally begin to materialise. Travel is definitely in your charts. You’ve been working hard and it’s time to enjoy the sights and sounds of a new city or simply catch up with old friends.

One of your favourite things is to learn. Be it a new language or art history. In fact, your natural inquisitiveness is one of the things that make you so much fun at any party. So this month, wherever you find an opportunity to learn something new, feel free to jump right in. You’ve made some great choices with respect to your career so far; bank on that when the time comes to make some crucial decisions at work.

If you’ve been struggling with a particular problem dear Sag, expect to find a solution to it this month. Don’t seek answers in obvious places. Instead, sniff around various other avenues or places that you wouldn’t normally venture into and you’ll be surprised at what you find. Also, if you’ve been thinking of a new project, this month is the ideal time to start it.

Taurus June will be a busy month for you, not only at work but also at home. So make sure you’re always alert and at the top of our game. It might get a little overwhelming by the end of the month, but your sheer perseverance will help you through it all. And once it’s all over, you’ll be well rewarded. It’s true what they say, what goes around, comes around.

Gemini If you’re facing some problems at work, don’t hesitate to ask your colleagues for some help. Chances are they’ll be able to give you some valuable and unexpected insights. Team up with a friend and enjoy a good game of tennis or golf or whatever suits your mood. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to face any kind of challenge. And with your versatile mind and agile attitude, you can make anything work for you.

Virgo Your intense focus on certain things will help you this month. Don’t let your concentration waver. You have got some super good energy floating around in your general vicinity during the second week, so take advantage of it to really get some work done. And while you’re at it, remember that it’s the little things in life which make it special so don’t ignore the signs.

Capricorn The super-achiever in you will get new wings this month. You’re all charged up and ready for a good mental (or even physical) workout. By the end of the month, you’ll have achieved all your targets. You and a friend are in total agreement on something thanks to your astounding ability to communicate with one another. You guys make a good team and things will work out to your mutual satisfaction.

Aquarius

You’re attached to certain people the way old trees are attached to the ground – in deep, complicated, beautiful ways. If someone falls in love with one of your friends, your approval of them will be sought. Towards the end of the month, in the midst of a disruption of some kind, you are the one to point out patterns of harmony in the madness.

You need to take it slow this month and not exert your self too much. There may be a good number of social invitations, so be very picky about which ones you choose to accept. A quiet evening spent at home with a good book might be a much better option. You’re entering a more cautious phase, which will affect your social life more than you’ll initially realise. But like all things in life, this will be a temporary phase. Rest assured that all upcoming changes are positive ones.

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

Summer is a great time for love and your charts look positively resplendent. Now is the time to get to know your partner as well as yourself a little bit better. Make plans for a special trip or just spend some quality time at home – it’ll be well worth it. But don’t forget to give yourself plenty of breathing room, you totally deserve it.

New experiences will mark the beginning of a new journey dear Scorpio. If you don’t like it at first, just give it some time. Eventually, as you explore this new dimension, you will learn to love it. A random conversation with a stranger will be enlightening in ways that you probably never expected. Keep your social energy up.

Not everything you do has to have some grand plan or goal behind it. Once in a while, you should indulge in activities simply because it’s fun. Play around with what intrigues you right now, and get comfortable with making mistakes. Nobody is perfect and there is no reason why you should try so hard. Everyone loves your imperfections because they make you who you are.
