G Talk f you thought sportswear was all about crumply tees, stretchy tights and a pair of Adidas shoes, consider yourself a fashion novice. Sportswear fashion traces its evolution when chic yet casual clothing initially worn only for sports events was adapted by designers such as Claire McCardell and Patou and soon became an enormous and enduring influence on women’s fashion. In my quest to find out the origins of this ambiguous, ever-changing fashion term, this definition seems to give an insight: Originally used to refer to clothing for active sports, and later to clothing worn to watch sporting events, this term has come to be applied to the broad category of casual wear and is worn at any time of the day and for a wide variety of activities. Today the term active wear is more likely to be applied to clothing for active sports. Sportswear is considered by many to be a major contribution of American design to clothing styles worldwide. This summer, sportswear continues in the direction of sleek, minimal and luxurious. With increased growth of collaborations taking place between the sport and fashion industries, the complex and diverse relationship between the two industries has merged to a balanced harmony. With the recent success of Adidas’ partnership with Raf Simons and Rick Owens – under the creative direction of Dirk Schönberger – sportswear has bridged the gap between streets and catwalks. Not just the success of its current partnerships, Adidas can also stake a claim in sportswear history as it was the first sportswear brand to gain high-end fashion status with the Y-3 line, launched with Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto 13 years ago. That was the first stand-alone fusion brand of its kind, shown on the catwalk with Yamamoto’s autumn/winter 2001 collection. While some of us feign ignorance on most fashion moments, it is the role of mediums like GLAM to highlight the emergence of sportswear as an important influence in fashion. Sportswear now goes beyond the gym to bring the comfort of material and tailoring, along with its signature elements like the hoodie, into everyday wear for the evolving women. GLAM brings you the essence of this trend, touching on regional designers who bring purpose to sportswear, while dishing out on living life healthy through our own tried and tested ways.

Veteran rock ‘n’ roll singer Marianne Faithfull is the latest musical star to be shot by Hedi Slimane for the French luxury brand. The latest edition of the Saint Laurent Music project features Marianne Faithfull wearing pieces designed by Hedi Slimane, who was also on duty behind the camera. Famed for her husky voice, Faithfull’s rock ‘n’ roll credentials are, of course, impeccable. The 67-yearold London-born singer co-wrote a track for The Rolling Stones, and was in a much publicised relationship with the band’s singer Mick Jagger for a number of years. Links between the Paris-based luxury brand and the music world go back to May 1971, when Yves Saint Laurent first dressed Mick Jagger and Bianca for their Saint Tropez wedding. Under the creative direction of Hedi Slimane, the brand has doubled down on the rock ‘n’ roll heritage with former Girls singer Christopher Owen chosen as one of the faces of the brand’s relaunch in 2013. Miles Kane has also recently contributed a specially written song to the label’s pre-Fall 2014 collection. Other musicians to appear in the Saint Laurent Music project include Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Marilyn Manson and Daft Punk.

TEDDY BOY Overcoming the dualism between everyday dress and formal elegance, in a full-fledged return of stylishness, the inspiration behind the Brunello Cucinelli SS 14 collection is the Teddy Boy (from “Teddy”, the nickname for Queen Victoria’s son Prince Edward, which appeared for the first time in a newspaper in 1953), named after the promising suburban youth movement of 1950s’ London that combined a style and elegance for men inspired by the look of Edward VII, revisited by the tailors of Savile Row, with the social actions demanding equal class rights during the post-World War II period. The Brunello Cucinelli collection alongside the latest summer pieces from designers including Temperley London, Roberto Guardiani, and Matthew Williamson are now available at The Gate Mall and Salam Studios & Stores.

FLAT LINE Dubbed the ‘ugly shoe’ trend that has taken over the feet of the most stylish this summer, flat sandals are the numero uno item that you need in your shoe rotation, if not THE only one. It is absolutely liberating to be kicking off our heels and abandoning the chunky platforms to slip our feet into the comfortable contours of poolslide-inspired footwear. It is a breeze to wear the trend with daytime outfits especially since the relaxed silhouettes of summer seems a match in heaven with these sandals but for the night, pick sharply tailored separates or delicate feminine dresses to perfect the look. Two things are essential to ace this trend, consistent summer-long pedicure appointments and a big dash of nonchalance confidence.

“I have a real appreciation for fashion, it’s a way of self-expression. I enjoy seeing how my friends - Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen, Rodarte - use clothes to create their vision and art.’
PALO ALTO
Jacket from Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane and Pants from 3.1 Phillip Lim; both available from Far Fetch
Gia Coppola’s directorial debut has definitely lived up to the familial legacy of the talented Coppolas, with Palo Alto gaining critics’ support. The movie weaves a coming of age tale starring Emma Roberts and James Franco; the latter being the author of a series of short stories on which the movie was based. “I look up to James. He has such an amazing work ethic – it’s really inspiring. He’s completely fearless. I strive to be more like that. I was very nervous about doing a feature film but I was lucky to have someone like James, who believed in me so much and took me through it so I was able to not worry and just enjoy creating,” Gia says. Bringing together the world of fashion with filmmaking, Gia has collaborated with Farfetch to bring to life the essence of her own personal style as well as anecdotes from the movie. “Costumes say a lot about a character. When it came to Palo Alto it was important for me that the kids didn’t look perfect. In most teen movies today, all of the clothes are expensive. I remember wearing a lot of dirty vintage clothes.”
‘Making short films felt like an extension of photography but with more challenges and gadgets to play with. I really love the one [I made] for Opening Ceremony – ‘Non Plus One’. That was really my first video so I have a soft spot for it.’
‘It was a natural fit (making the movie). I was really interested in the subject matter of teenagers – I had just finished college and had had enough separation where I could reflect back on those awkward years. So when I read James Franco’s book, it really felt right.’

FURRY FAIRYTALE
How many ways can you wear fur in the summer? A furry many ways of course, according to the Italian vanguard of furs, Fendi. It appeared as delicate adornments on fingers and ears, and shy glimpses on bags as the models walked down the spring runway. The eye-catching pops of accessories are the result of a symbolic collaboration between Delfina Delettrez and Karl Lagerfeld, which is adorably named Furrytale. Delfina, a cult jewellery designer, who is also the granddaughter of Adele Fendi, created the exclusive jewellery for SS2014 in homage to her family’s heritage. The collection features her signature offbeat and surrealist style with key pieces of cuffs, rings and ear cuffs that are adorned with detachable tufts of deeply coloured mink fur and feathers. There’s a strong tone of playfulness in the collection as Delfina uses materials like white pearls and crystals to bring to life the ‘Eye’ imagery – a signature motif of hers, and of course with the use of fur, symbolises the marrying of her lineage with the house of Fendi. The collection starts from QR2,500. Fendi is located at Villaggio Mall.

MODERN SYMMETRY Cult abaya brand, Slouchy’Z, takes on symmetry of modern architecture and geometric patterns as the key story for their Spring Summer 2014 collection, presenting the abaya in a vastly contemporary context. The inspirations were translated into fabric shapes of linen, cotton and crepes with the colour palette of navy, black, white, beige and grey – classic solid signature shades of the label. Each piece from the collection incorporates a combination of handmade embroideries and luxurious fabrics in bold blocks, resulting in an abaya that is modern and distinct. The SS2014 collection is in tandem with the label’s rebranding initiative to stay in tune with the changing landscape of the fashion industry in the Middle East. “It is important that Slouchy’Z retains its established principles but at the same time develops a new and modern identity. We feel that, as our culture blends more with the western culture, it is necessary to do the same with fashion, nonetheless, upholding our traditional values. We want to make sure we send the right message that we can be modern, edgy and traditional at the same time,” says the label’s founding designer Maryam Al Selaich.
AN EDIT OF THINGS THAT ARE HOT NOW
ETHAN K ICONS
GAYDAMAK JEWELLERY
Hand bracelets or palm cuffs first made a confusing debut appearance as questions were asked, “Is your bracelet stuck?” But to those in the know, the hand bracelet, which is worn over four fingers and between the thumb was the mark of the cool trend spotters. It is also the signature creation that cemented the success of Parisian jewellery label Gaydamak – the brainchild of sisters Katia and Sonia Gaydamak. The hand bracelet was inspired by chance when a chain caught itself around Katia’s palm, and has since become a new icon statement piece. The sisters were formally train in gemology and work exclusively with precious metals and gems in their collections, injecting elements of art and nature into their work. “We were looking to innovate with a statement piece of jewellery that had never been seen before, when we realised the hand is a forgotten part of a woman’s body”, the sisters explain. www.gaydamakjewellery.com
One of the world’s most lovable bespoke bag designers, Ethan K has released the Icons Collection – an ongoing project where Ethan designs with internationally recognised personalities as his muses. Drawing on the individual’s travel destinations, favourite flowers, and distinct lifestyles, the bags are truly reflective of Ethan K’s bespoke services and the essence of his work. Among the personalities in the Icons Collection are managing director of Citibank Singapore, Lee Lung Nien, president of Saks Fifth Avenue Marigay Mckee, vice president of Mercury Alla Verber and Kazakh artist Anar Aitzhanova.

CLAIRE’S X KATY PERRY
Katy Perry’s latest album Prism leads with the hit single ‘Roar’, a song drawing on personal empowerment and the artist has collaborated with kitsch accessories brand Claire’s for a Prism collection. The collection is limited edition and will be available through summer. Claire’s is at Landmark Mall.
BENEDETTA BRUZZICHES
Fashion always reflects the times that we live in, and there’s no better time to immortalise the ‘selfie’ culture that has reigned supreme in social media. So when we first laid eyes on the Mirror Mirror clutch by Benedetta Bruzziches, we knew it was going to be a major hit as it not only functions as a vanity mirror for on-the-go makeup retouches but also a great ‘selfie’ taking opportunity! The oval clutch fits only the necessary and the clasps takes a page from the original Snow White fairy tale, asking the age-old “Who’s the fairest of them all?” The Italian designer started her line of whimsical clutches three years ago and has quickly gained fans globally for her quirky touch. Benedetta Bruzziches is now available in Per Lei Couture boutique at Porto Arabia, The Pearl.
ASAP54
We just have to admit that Instagram has given us all major wardrobe envy, especially during Fashion Week feeds. Who’s wearing what, and where can we get our hands on them? It was only a matter of time that something like ASAP54 would be conceived to solve our first world fashion troubles. The app is like the fashion equivalent of Shazam, serving up suggestions of looks based on any uploaded imagery. The photos, though primarily fashion, could include anything from scenery to interior décor, and ASAP54 will return results of clothes, shoes and accessories that fit into the theme. If the automatic results do not suit your fancy, there’s also an option to ask a real-life stylist to find results tailored to you. And the best part is that you can shop the suggested items immediately! “I have been hugely excited by the way people are using the app and making almost anything ‘shoppable’, from landscapes to food,” says app founder Daniela Cecilio.

BEYOND FASHION
In the newly appointed Anna Wintour Costume Center, the highly prolific retrospective exhibition ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’ examines the crucial role that the couturier Charles James played not only as a fashion creator but also as an educator. “Charles James was a wildly idiosyncratic, emotionally fraught fashion genius who was also committed to teaching,” says Harold Koda, curator-in-charge of The Costume Institute. “He dreamt that his lifetime of personal creative evolution and the continuous metamorphosis of his designs would be preserved as a study resource for students. In our renovated galleries, we will fulfill his goal and illuminate his design process as a synthesis of dressmaking, art, math, and science.” Approximately sixty five of Charles’s most notable designs, produced over the course of his career from the 1920s until his death in 1978, are on display at the exhibition. The legendary couturier was most famed for his iconic gowns, the ‘Clover Leaf’, the ‘Butterfly’, the ‘Tree’ and the ‘Swan. The exhibition runs from now until August 10th at The Costume Institute of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A SPORTING
LIFE
It is very New York-centric, and it’s not even womenswear, but all season we have been referencing one cult brand that we feel sets the tone for the undercurrent of sporting looks that scatter retail spaces. Public School, designed by two very urbane gentlemen Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, evokes a kind of new age casual coolness with lingering hints of the early 90s too-cool-for-school generation. It is with this essence that we should peruse summer’s leap into a sporting life. It is athletic, and it is sporty but it is also luxurious and there is nothing laughable about pairing sandals with socks anymore, now that Prada has enabled it. Plimsolls, racer backs, gym shorts, stripes, and mesh in high-tech fabrics then are given the fashion touch with bold volumes and refined lines. A feminine textured bomber jacket or with appliqués if you please, a tennis-style skirt, a pair of stylicised track pants and a slouchy hoody ala Stephane Rolland will kick you off in the right direction.

is categorical, and sure, it is definitely not something that the mass market may easily understand, but Mira’s collections are a catalyst to a burgeoning new voice of designers who are not afraid to pursue their own aesthetics. Trained at Milan’s Instituto Marangoni, Mira worked with Elie Saab and Erdem before being selected by Lebanon’s fashion collective Starch Foundation to kick-start her own label in 2001. Her eponymous label, strikingly steered towards urban sportswear, seems almost prescient of the sporting trend that has taken over the runways this season. The designer’s signature is to engineer garments with geometric lines to create distinct blocs using different colour and fabric combinations. “It evolves every season but this signature theme retains the same urban sensibility and, most importantly, evokes fun and optimism,” Mira explains. In the increasingly evolving communities across the Middle East, the new muse of fashion is now urban and independent, “The Mira Hayek woman is dynamic, creative and strongly influenced by music and dance. She is at ease with herself and confident,” Mira says. The designer talks to us about the arrival of sportswear as fashion’s new fixture and the rise of minimalism.
The sportswear trend will definitely become a corner stone on runways due to the reality behind the modern day woman.
Why did you decide to venture into sportswear? When designing the collections, the most important factor that comes to my mind is ‘what pieces do I see myself in?’ This being said, the collections always revert back to my sense of style – cohesive, comfortable and modern pieces that can take you from day to night.
Sportswear is definitely trending right now. Do you think it will be something that will be long-lived? How do you think the trend can become a permanent feature in womenswear? The sportswear trend will definitely become a corner stone on runways due to the reality behind the modern day woman. Currently, women are seeking easy yet trendy pieces to fit their fast-paced and efficient lifestyle due to the dramatic speed-up of how we live our lives these days. How did your foray into fashion design begin? I started my journey in graphic design, thereafter, I moved to Milan to continue my studies in Fashion Design at Istituto Marangoni. Hungry for more, I completed a master’s degree in Fashion and Textile Design at Istituto Europeo Di Design. I returned back home in 2009 and launched the first Mira Hayek collection in 2011. What do you think of the design scene now in the Middle East? Are people becoming more receptive to new ideas? The Middle East as a whole is becoming a trendsetter in apparel in my opinion, especially with the rise and acknowledgement of designers, art and talent. The mentality of long lavish evening gowns is no doubt still existent, however, the style is drifting towards a more minimalistic, structural and lighter silhouette. What do you think are the defining features of fashion sportswear compared to functional sportswear? The term ‘sportswear’ was originally used to refer to clothing for active sports, and later to clothing worn to watch sporting events. However, this term has changed and is now being applied to the broad category of casual wear that is worn at any time of the day and for a wide variety of activities. Sportswear is now considered by many to be the dominant clothing style worldwide. What is in your pipeline now to venture into a bigger market? I would love to start selling my merchandise in Doha. We are in the process of organising trunk shows around the Middle East and the Gulf – and we will definitely keep everyone posted via social media. The brand is currently being sold online at mysouk.com and mooda.com and we also take personal orders by phone or email.

The
one thing that seals the deal with Level is its ability to surprise. Just when you thought that you have seen the season’s latest, you turn a corner and discover there’s more. But unlike a traditional department store where at times, stocking can be mundane and repetitive, Level seems to keep the excitement going by presenting new perspectives. A 24karat gold loafer? Limited edition sneakers? Sky-high runway stilettos? Oh, and is that a bunny or a shoe? To the uninitiated, Level Shoe District is the reigning shoe mecca of the world, aptly located in the world’s largest retail space, the Dubai Mall. From the exterior, anchored by (unsurprisingly) the world’s first Louis Vuitton shoe maison, Level presents a sleek and polished image but once inside, it is a jovially-appointed decadent collection of shoe labels. Mini pop-ups and seasonal themes urge you to listen to the tales they weave before you try on a pair of shoe. Take this summer for example, where flat sandals are the de facto shoes of the season, Level takes you on a Greek Odyssey to rustic Greece village homes wearing none other than cult label Ancient Greek Sandals. When you take a break from your shopping spree, enjoy a special Greek-inspired menu at Vogue Café – located right in the center of Level’s beating heart. It is an experience all round, it is no longer just about trying and buying shoes, “We will be traditional in the sense of the level of distinct quality of service, but we want to be unexpected in our offerings,” says Rania Masri, General Manager of Level. The space is also home to the first Margaret Dabbs spa outside of the UK – the world’s first foot beauty clinic – and The Cobbler – purveyors of bespoke shoe services. Beyond the heavyweights in the designer sections for both men and women which spell an impressive repertoire including Oscar de la Renta and Giambattista Valli, the contemporary section is the reflection of pop culture of the times. Stepping into the contemporary floor is akin to entering an urban club with dimmed lighting and hip music to match the offbeat selections of footwear that even Harajuku-dwellers would be impressed with. It is probably the few places in the world to play host to vantage-centric brands like Sue Comma Bonnie and freshly minted labels like Ivy Kirzhner. Level’s ability to source far and wide is enviable as it commands a varied clientele but the approach has also allowed Middle Eastern shoppers to discover a whole wide world of shoe designers that were previously not available in the region. Level’s continuous effort to help these new brands tell their stories through in-store promotions has a lasting effect on creating a culture of truly understanding what you are buying. It is also an art of indulging visitors in specialty shoe trends. Level has a dedicated area for sneaker culture, where fans known as “sneaker heads” avidly collect unique and special editions of sports footwear. “We wanted to do something other retail stores don’t have by promoting this community-based love of sneakers. It’s all about a mindset and a lifestyle and it extends beyond just Nikes or Pumas but an edit of unique sneakers including ones that are not popular in

the mainstream,” Rania explains. In come cult brands like Hogan with its colourful cushiony interpretations and Golden Goose’s signature washed-out high-tops. Even UGGs and Havaianas find their spots in Level – the current season hot list being the alligator-strap flip flops from the Valentino and Havaianas collaboration. The clout of the shoe metropolis is unmistakable, simply by the fact that designers are eagerly creating shoes that are made available exclusively in Level. It has after all become the
launching pad of many budding labels including Louis Leeman and Julie Jolie while paving new markets for established names. The success of the Level’s Exclusive collections has gained the store a strong fan base that is unrivalled, because who wouldn’t want to get their feet on a pair of limited edition shoes from their favourite designers? And to top off the experience, an expert team of personal stylists are always on hand be it to help you find shoes for specific occasions or to help you grow your collection of footwear.

Tell us about your collaboration with Level Shoe District. We worked together with Level Shoe District’s very experienced VM team on the display for the Shoe Odyssey in-store theme this season, we exchanged ideas and the result is really amazing. With white and blue little houses and wooden boats, you feel as if you are strolling through a Greek Cycladic island! When we heard the title “Shoe Odyssey” we got really excited. It is so directly linked and perfectly aligned with Ancient Greek Sandals. This mythical concept is so well suited for our brand which is mainly inspired by ancient Greek mythology!

What do you think of Level Shoe District? Level Shoe District is a huge and unique shoe space. The vast variety of brands which is so well displayed makes shopping for shoes a whole new experience. By being part of the incredible brand mix and especially by having created this pop up store, Ancient Greek Sandals have gained major exposure and brand awareness not just locally but on an international scale. What was your inspiration behind the exclusive piece crafted specifically for Level Shoe District this season? “Odyssey”, the high gladiator winged style for Women is available only at Level Shoe District in a bright cracked gold leather. This brings a new glamorous feel to this impressive sandal and I think it will be an instant success with Level’s fashion forward customers.

MAPPING THE WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARLA MALLARI
THAT IS ESSENTIALLY WHAT THE FACEHUNTER DOES, BUT IN HIS OFF-BEAT, INSIGHTFUL WAY. GLAM SQUAD’S DEBRINA ALIYAH TRACKS HIM DOWN IN DOHA.
define Yvan Rodic is a difficult task, as he has cleverly carved himself into an entirely new category of the modern day global nomad. On the surface, he could be called a street style photographer but his work in recent times has departed from the now rather common endeavour of photographing people attending fashion shows. Instead, the FaceHunter, as he is known, travels cities – preferably ones that are off-the-beaten track – to hunt for the truly locale experience and documenting them in series of storytelling images. Through a chance encounter with Qatari fashion designer, Wadha Al Hajri, in Milan during fashion week, Yvan hopped on a plane and arrived in Doha at the onset of the city’s scorching summer, and in time to experience Richard Serra’s installations all over the country. “This place is kind of under the radar and I was very curious,” he says. Through the eyes of Wadha and other

prolific fashion personalities in Doha, Yvan soaked up the culture from art exhibitions, food and the nightlife, in a way that he most prefers, “I want to have the insider perspective.” It is this approach that has catapulted his visual diary site to its popularity, bringing in images and experiences that are entirely unique and not the standard postcard photos of cities. “Travelling is something very social to me. I want to go to places where locals hang out and eat what they eat, drink and dance where they dance. I think through that process, I get to meet organically interesting people in the scenes of each city and that helps in a short time to hit the right spots essentially, meeting and photographing the right people,” he explains. And so, while most street style blogs feature people dressed immaculately in designer gear, Yvan’s site features people with interesting stories to tell beyond the one shot. “It’s not just the clothes, it’s a package. I
think it’s easy to differentiate fashionistas from people who are truly interesting. Fashionistas are people who are just collecting trends while you can tell when people have something special inside them.” That probably explains why the soul and architecture of Doha has won Yvan over compared to its flashier sister cities like Dubai. “There’s so much substance in Doha while Dubai is all about size; it doesn’t matter if it’s nice looking or not, as long as it’s the tallest in the world, but here there’s more sense of making buildings look interesting,” he says. The bourgeoning fashion industry has also not escaped his eyes, as he was pleasantly surprised when he discovered the contemporary womenswear designs of The Kayys and Nine Collection. In the meteoric rise of his career, Yvan has published two photography books, FaceHunter and A Year in the Life of

FaceHunter, a compilation of snap shots of fashion and lifestyle through his camera lens. He chose the name FaceHunter for a tinge of mystery and drama to help build the hype of his brand, creating an intrigue about the person behind the camera and also injecting a part of himself into his work. “You need to realise that getting a few shots is something that takes a lot of time. You need to be patient; you need to focus on the right time and event. It looks simple but especially in places with less material, it’s really hard work. You have to be dedicated, there’s no miracle,” he says. has just concluded an almost month-long adventure immersing himself into the colourful world of Colombia for jewellery brand Flor Amazona. Dubbed The FaceHunter Journey, he traversed the cities and jungle of Colombia to discover and capture the reality of modern-day Colombia in a documentary-style approach. “When I meet people that I photograph, I feel that the way they look captures what’s inside them. It’s a general intuition in me that these people would be interesting to talk to,” he says. A quick look at Yvan’s visual diary will have you dizzy with the impressive number of cities he has captured are but for now Iran and Nigeria is on his next ‘hunted’ list.

YVAN RODIC’S HOT SPOTS Iceland, Reykjavik “It is in my opinion, one of the most interesting cities in the world. Often, people tend to connect the size of a city with culture and fashion vibrancy and it’s true to a certain extent when you think about cities like New York, London, and Tokyo, but Reykjavik is a really small town situated in a very isolated
part of the world. It was so great to see how confident and assured people were about the way they dress. The population is around three hundred thousand, and it’s not inspired by the outside world, it’s their own thing.” Seoul, South Korea “One of the most stylish interpretations of menswear I have seen.” Jakarta, Indonesia “Interesting mix of traditional fabrics like batik with contemporary pieces. They have a lot of Muslim-inspired fashion bloggers that are covered and dressed modestly but they were really into being photographed. I got many requests to take their photos. They were very expressive and it’s such a different perspective of a Muslim country.” Johannesburg, South Africa “I feel like it’s the culture capital of Africa. A lot of people really mix African elements with something modern.” Los Angeles, USA “It’s better than what people think. LA has a bit of everything; every single option you can dream of and LA is not as concentrated as New York, so there’s a lot of uniqueness. They don’t all hang out at the same places so they don’t get influenced by each other and you see more individual expressions. I feel that it’s understated as a style city.” Sydney, Australia “This city is a rising star from a fashion perspective. Designers and street style influences have really come into the limelight in the last few years.”

A LITTLE BETTER
EACH DAY BY AYSWARYA MURTHY
“AFTER ALL, ISN’T THAT WHAT SUCCESS IS?” NUWAID ASKS ME WHEN I TELL HIM THAT I HAVE BEEN FEELING DISTINCTLY UNMOTIVATED. WHEN YOU PUT IT THAT WAY, IT DOES FEEL LIKE SUCCESS.
I
wish I had had that talk with Nuwaid before I wasted a few days wallowing in self-pity. Yes, that happened. A real rollercoaster ride if ever there was one. Though it promises to be an interesting story, enough about me. The best bit about Crunch, for me, is the fact that you are never working out alone. There were always people around you going through exactly the same peaks and troughs as you; it’s a ready-made support structure, the value of which can never be overestimated. And it’s their stories that we’ll be bringing you in this final instalment. I had never met Maria, owing to being in different batches, but was eager to listen to what she had to say, considering she was a returning client. A few weeks into her second three-month programme, she is much buoyed by her positive experience from before. Having got her feet wet with the three-week programme initially, Maria’s first time around wasn’t such a massive shock to the system as it was for me and it had worked better too. “I was very happy with the results. I had lost weight and dropped two dress sizes. The mirror told a more dramatic story. But I felt I could lose more so here I am again,” she says. I confess I had thought about it too. But more than the diet, what was giving me pause for thought was the massive amount of time you have to invest. “It eats through a major chunk of your day,” Maria agrees, “Suddenly I don’t have the three hours I used to have in the evenings.” Like Mohammed says, prepare to put your social life on hold. Not only
that, it truly does consume your waking hours, with you constantly watching what you eat and taking your supplements. And for many, it’s a novel experience, Nuwaid says. “When was the last time you devoted so much of your time and energy, continuously and towards a single goal?” Though Crunch now offers three kinds of programmes (and five more are on the way, according to Saima, catering to different needs), their three-month transformation is undoubtedly the most popular one. It has been more than 18 months since Nuwaid, not liking what he saw in the mirror, joined the nearest g ym and huffed and puffed his way through his first cardio session in weeks. “I have a strong sports background and certifications in training and nutrition. But somewhere along the way I had gone completely off track,” he says. The programme was born partially out of experience and partially out of trial and error. And the many people he has trained over the months have only helped him perfect it. “The programme is constantly evolving and I am always tweaking the techniques – it doesn’t have to be something major either. It’s almost always the small details. The basics of any training programme are the same – the types of nutrients you need and the kinds of exercises you do. What makes the difference is how you put them together to get the best results.” Results. The more I spoke to people the more I realised we all wanted different things from these three months. I wanted to
FITNESS CHIC / 71 fit into my old white jeans. Jasim wanted to exude energy and confidence. For Mohammed this was a better alternative to surgery. And Joise is happy just being able to hold up his children in church, a task that used to tire him out in under five minutes. And between ourselves, we had lost about 40 kgs. Jasim was having to give long-winded explanations about his workout and diet at least ten times a day to astonished colleagues. And for almost all of us, the experience was unique. “If I worked out by myself, I’d probably stay on the same cardio machine, run at the same speed and not challenge myself at all,” Maria says. The same was the case with Jasim who would go to the gym on a whim, burn a bunch of calories and leave. “It was not structured. And I wanted much more than to just lose weight.” Desk-bound programmer Joise had also never been through workouts of such intensity but as long as his posture was perfected and the effects of the exercise explained to him, he was happy to go with the flow. What makes it truly special is who we work out with. “My brothers had done the transformation programme before and I knew how rigorous it was. I didn’t expect to last beyond a week but everyone has been so friendly and supportive. I have made a lot of friends; this isn’t the sort of experience I have had at a gym before,” Mohammed says. This support, both inside and outside the gym, is important. Mohammed probably would have never done it if his brothers hadn’t physically dragged him out of bed and made him sign up. I would have given up in under a week if it weren’t for my mom who was making my meals, reminding me about my supplements and prepping my gym clothes. And we are doing this as much for ourselves as for the people we love.
Nuwaid, “You make more of an effort to work out or do sport. When you look a plate of food, you subconsciously start breaking it down into fat, carbs, proteins.” In fact, Maria says, that after a month or so in the programme, she didn’t seem to enjoy rest days as much and found herself wanting to be at the gym again. “I went on a vacation before I started the programme again and didn’t gain any weight during that time. I realised my portion sizes had reduced and I don’t think I’d be able to eat as much even if I wanted to,” she says. She stills sees many of the people she used to work out with; they have continued their gym membership and are now regulars. “For the first time, I am seeing some sort of muscle definition. So I really don’t want to have a step back,” Joise laughs. While Mohammed’s stresseating days are behind him, consummate foodie Jasim probably won’t be bothering himself with the diet after the programme. But he’s definitely been bitten by the fitness bug. “There was a particularly brutal session last week which I thought was going to be my last day here. But I asked my trainer to repeat it again this week.” He quotes Gandhi: “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from indomitable will.”
For the first time, I am seeing some sort of muscle definition. So I really don’t want to have a step back.
While the amazing transformations listed on the Crunch website soon dispels disbelief about whether this is really possible, there’s always a lingering doubt as to whether you can really keep the weight off after the programme. “Sustaining the progress that has been made is something we take very seriously,” Nuwaid says. “We follow up with old clients and the amazing part is that a large number of them have made big changes to their lifestyle. They continue to do well, some even start doing better. Which makes sense; when used to the rigours of the programme, it’s not difficult to incorporate less strict, but nonetheless healthy, parts of it into your lifestyle. “This is why we are working on our new eight-month lifestyle builder programme. The diet isn’t as restrictive and you work out for 45 minutes, three days a week,” says Saima. Crunch is also planning to start Tribe from September – an online community for Crunchers with access to forums, articles and videos, to keep reminding them about all the hard work they have already put in and to stay in the groove. “It’s all about the mental changes,” says
Crunch, which started nine months ago with seven clients at one location and only Nuwaid and Saima handling the business and operations, has now expanded to five locations with over 50 clients serviced by a team of nine. But it’ll be much bigger the same time next year, Nuwaid promises. London is our next stop, says a visibly excited Saima. They soon expect to retail apparel and equipment needed for g ym-based training and are working on making supplements available through suppliers in Doha, on account of how painful the process is currently. Ultimately, Crunch will be a fitness brand that will be franchised globally. That’s the plan. There was one sentiment of mine that also clearly echoed with everyone I spoke to. The breaking down of mental barriers about what I could or couldn’t do. “I have come to learn nothing is impossible. I feel much less inclined to give up on things, even outside the gym,” Joise says. “Each day you push your limits just a little bit and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it is amazing,” Maria smiles. As she recounts her failed attempts at squatting, I remembered my own first week when, after a punishing bicep workout, I couldn’t even support myself for a single push up. My arms gave away and I fell flat on my face. No exaggeration. The embarrassing memory is faint now; I did 15 push ups of three sets last week. I am not overly proud, however, because I am still needing the knees; but baby steps. Baby steps.

RIGHT FOOD FORWARD BY ABIGAIL MATHIAS
I
n today’s fast-paced world healthy; eating is not just a fashion fad but vital to our very existence. As most of us rush from one busy day to the next, our stress levels often rise and dip. In such a scenario, flushing away builtup toxins may not just clear one’s skin and offer a healthy glow, but will keep your vital organs in check for the long haul. With a little help from health experts in the country, we’ve put together some of the easiest ways to keep you feeling fit. Layla Al Dorani, CEO and Founder of Raw Middle East offers insights on the benefits of natural juices. Raw has been providing freshly prepared healthy juices to residents all over Qatar since January 2011. We find out more... What is a juice detox and why should I try it? Short juice fasts are a way to give the body a boost and a break without embarking on a fasting diet that may be too harsh or restrictive for your body and/or nutritional needs. A 24-hour juice detox can be a great way to jumpstart a diet, but it’s important to have a healthy eating plan in place following the day of cleansing.
EASY-SQUEEZY
Try these juice recipes at home.
Remember: the longer you detox, the greater the benefits you will feel including; weight loss, clearer skin, better sleep and more energy. Tips: You shouldn’t feel like you’re starving while on a juice cleanse; drink it as often as you need to in order to keep your appetite at bay and your body nourished (aim for roughly 5-6 times a day). Drink lots of water; carry a water bottle with you everywhere and don’t let your body get dehydrated. Plan a more plant-based and ‘clean’ (unprocessed) food diet before and after your juice detox. Difference between a centrifugal and coldpressed juicer: The high-tech cold-pressed machine used by Raw ME has a two-step process of first grinding and then pressing fruit and vegetables for the highest juice yield, without heat, keeping more of the fresh ingredients’ nutrients intact. This is the reason why the juice is considered high quality and the best in the market.
GREEN ENVY: A handful of green grapes 1 cucumber 1 green apple A handful of greens: kale or spinach BENEFITS: A dose of iron. Key for healthy blood cells and muscle function. SPECIAL TIP: Change it from a juice to a smoothie by adding fresh avocado. Pour the juice into a blender and add 1/2 avocado to give it a creamy texture and delicious taste.
RADICAL ROOTS: • 1/2 beetroot • 1 carrot • 1 apple • 1/2 inch ginger BENEFITS: High-fibre root veggies keep things moving through the digestive tract, while ginger calms your stomach. Share your juice detox experience at #rawmeqatar and follow them at www.raw-me.com

T

he path to a healthy you is fraught with obstacles. When you decide to eat healthily, a neighbour bakes a cheesecake, or your colleague decides to treat the team; when you drive to your gym, your child falls sick and you change course to head home; when you intend to walk your dog for at least 5kms every day, your publication company decides to bring out one more title to its growing number of magazines, and reaching home early becomes a thing of the past or the far future. My path to the healthy, well-exercised me is strewn with all of the above obstacles and though I am always the first to sign up for any new programme that is announced in Doha, with strong intent, I am also the first to bunk the classes as soon as I have paid the course fee. If the money spent on all the fitness programmes ensured a healthy and fit person, then I would have reached there long ago. One of the fitness regimes that I signed up for was Curves. At the start, I was sure that THIS was the one meant for me. Curves Middle East promised to be the place where women change their lives 30 minutes at a time and I sure had 30-minutes to myself, I told myself firmly. Curves offered a “proven” 30-minute workout, commonsense weight loss and “all the support you need to reach your goals”. The loud music as you enter Curves can either put you in high spirits or make you want to leave the place in an instant. So the deciding factor is whether you love to spend your wellness path in the company of others with some loud music in the background or prefer to have some peaceful “only you and your instruc-
tor” time. If you tend to lean towards the former, head straight to Curves because this is the place for the less motivated lot. Curves is all about strength training. According to experts at Curves, “Strength training has long been a missing component in women’s fitness, but it’s crucial to a healthy body. Dieting without strength training leads to muscle loss, which makes it harder to lose weight. Strength training is also good for building strong bones. Sustained cardio activity – keeping your heart in its target training zone for at least 30 minutes – is great for burning calories and building lung capacity and aerobic fitness.” And it is not without results. The Curves workout has been proven to be effective at protecting muscle, burning body fat and raising metabolism. In clinical trials, the least fit exercisers expended 164 to 238 calories during a 30-minute Curves workout, while the fittest burned more than 500 calories. The best part was the all-women atmosphere. There was serious women bonding and we (all new faces) smiled at each other in shared confidence and trust. While I enjoyed my 30-minutes of workout, I wasn’t sweating or tiring out when I finished and did feel motivated while I looked at other women labouring at their machines. All was well and good till I reached home and then work took over… The path to change is within you, it happens the moment you agree to a fixed routine, but to continue with it you need dedication and perseverance. My salute and respect to all the fit and well-exercised women out there (and the few in my office too) for their commitment to continue with a regime and to give it your best. I hope to reach there sometime…

Sharp suits and honest-to-goodness tailoring has put Sacoor Brothers on the sartorial map for menswear power dressing, and for the first time ever, the label has appointed a female brand ambassador as the face for its womenswear offering. Supermodel Irina Shayk, who shot to fame with Sports Illustrated, joins Patrick Dempsey in the new lifestyle campaign for the label that has just opened its first boutique in Qatar at Ezdan Mall. Sacoor Brothers was founded in 1989 in Lisbon and champions aspirational lifestyle dressing with dedicated tailor services. The womenswear collection for Spring Summer 2014 is an elegant intermix of lightweight dresses, fitted shirts and smart blazers; a wardrobe perfect for the ultimate resort vacation. Irina tells us about working with one of the most talked about male hero in television, McDreamy, and inspiring women through her work. How was it like shooting the campaign for Sacoor Brothers? How did you come on board this project? I was chosen to represent womenswear in the new Sacoor Brothers collection and the project took place in Los Angeles where we also shot the beautiful Sacoor Brothers Spring/Summer 2014 campaign. How was it like working with Patrick McDempsey, the McDreamy of television? We don’t know each other personally but the truth is that the working relationship fitted us very well. I couldn’t ask for more. To be in LA among the palm trees on a beautiful beach with a spectacular ocean view, and wearing the most amazing yet comfortable pieces. And I got to work with an amazing team too! It’s all about the lifestyle and the beautiful clothes. It was such an amazing experience. What are some of your favourite piece from Sacoor Brothers? Sacoor Brothers’ clothes are just so comfortable and stunning. I would like to
describe it something akin to waking up and feeling beautiful just by putting on the collection by the brand. Sacoor Brothers clothing is for confident women. What is your personal style like? I consider myself a simple girl; I love to be laidback. I love wearing comfortable clothes, with nothing done to my hair and no makeup. You won’t see me strolling around the city in high heels, dressed to the nines. How do you think your career-choice can be empowering for women globally; being an icon that young girls can look up to? I always advise young girls and women to push themselves to be better and to work hard in life. I think motivation is a main key to success. I grew up in a very small village in the middle of nowhere. My father passed away when I was 14 and my mother had to quit her job. She was a pianist. She had to take on another two jobs to provide for the family. I see my mother as a strong woman, who needed to work hard. I think success is the result of very hard work. Success doesn’t come easy. You have to work really hard for success. You have to really know what you want. Because once you go out there, people are always going to try to say things like “you can’t do this job, you’re not good enough”, so you have to be really strong. You have to really know what you want. And I think this is where success lies. You have to work really hard. This year, you will be making your acting debut in a big movie, Hercules. How was it like going into the world of acting? Acting is something completely different from modeling; they’re two completely different jobs. To be an actress, you have to study and be great. This year, I shot my first movie and it was an amazing experience because the director was Brett Ratner, who’s one of my favorite directors. I had this great experience working with this amazing team, Brett, with Paramount Pictures, and a lot of talented actors.

DYLON ADONIS 21-year-old Dylon was raised in Doha – having moved here in 2001 from South Africa. While he trained as a competitive swimmer in high school, he is now a fashion design student in VCU-Q, and is ready to take the fashion world by storm.
EARLY PASSIONS
I started showing interest in modelling when I was about 15 years old. I thought it was a wonderful industry because models get to travel all around the world and meet many designers. Throughout high school, I helped my classmates when they needed a model for a photo shoot in their projects. I did my first runway job for Fahad Al-Obaidly in November 2012. It was a really empowering experience and that’s when I discovered my affinity for runway.
PERSONAL STYLE
I’m on “beach mode” during summer, so I like to wear shorts and plain tees. Throughout the year, however, I wear a lot of jeans because they are versatile and suit many situations. I would dub my style minimalist grunge in the sense that I take many of the grunge features such as acid washed jeans, ripped jeans, skinny jeans and tone them down slightly with a more chic look, like pairing them with loafers.
INSPIRATION AND AMBITION
My favourite models are Jon Kortajarena, Gui Fedrizzi, and Sean O’Pry. My favourite designers are Dean and Dan Caten for DSquared2, Kris Van Assche, Donatella Versace, Alexis Mabille, and Rick Owens, and I want to work for them one day. In 5 to 10 years, I hope to walk runways of all over the world, and be featured on the cover of GQ and Men’s Vogue at least once.
ADVICE
Have a strong heart. Many times, you will get rejected at casting calls, but you need to have the strength to go on. The modelling industry is both physically and emotionally strenuous but very rewarding at the same time. Numerous people will try to undermine and discourage you; instead, take those negative words as a compliment for they are afraid of your success. EVER LOOKED AT SOMEONE WITH LUMINOUS SKIN AND THOUGHT TO YOURSELF ‘HOW DO THEY DO THAT’?
BEAUTY / 95
I am
here to give you a few simple and easy to follow pointers that will help you on the road to great skin. When you notice someone with great skin, you’re probably thinking that they go to a dermatologist, use really expensive products, have been blessed with good genetics, or have regular facials. I’m going to let you in on a little secret; they take care of their skin twice a day: when they wake up and before they go to sleep. More than likely most of you know this already, but, the trick is to actually DO it. If you suffer from acne, rosacea, eczema or any of these skin conditions then you would definitely be seeing a doctor. But, if you have dull, flaky, dehydrated, blemished, clogged, blotchy or sensitive skin there are a few things which you can do at home to correct this. Firstly, find a good cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser. These three products are the basics of a good daily skincare routine. You need to find something that you will love using. Look for texture, benefits and scent. The texture of the cleanser you would prefer using, normally points out the type of skin you have. If you like gentle creamy cleansers or cleansing balms, you’re probably dehydrated, mature or sensitive. These types of cleansers are good for dissolving oil so if you wear lots of makeup this would be ideal for you. They are also very hydrating. If you’re more drawn to fresh, foamy, invigorating facial washes, your skin could be the combination to oily type. Facial washes leave a fresh, clean feel on the skin which oily skins tend to prefer. Choose the cleanser that you think would benefit you. So now that you’ve decided on which type of cleanser that would benefit you, let’s talk about exfoliators. Exfoliators are extremely important in your skincare routine. This is the product which will slough away all dead skin cells and reveal the new fresh, radiant cells. When you apply your moisturiser without exfoliating regularly, you’re applying it on dead skin cells. This means your moisturiser is just lying on the top of these dead skin cells without giving any hydration to the growing cells underneath which need it. So it’s useless, and you’re just wasting your time and money. When you are applying your moisturiser on exfoliated skin, it improves absorption, which causes your skin to hydrate properly, as well as soak up all active ingredients in your moisturiser. Exfoliation corrects uneven skin tone and texture, clogged pores and flakiness. Exfoliators come in different textures: rough granular scrubs can be used twice a week and are for oily to combination skins or for somebody who prefers an intense scrubbed sensation. Fine granular scrubs can be used daily as they are gentle on the skin and are good for normal, combination or dry skin. Then we have the enzymatic exfoliators which are
used as a mask. These exfoliators are applied to clean skin and left for around 5-10 minutes for best results. The enzymatic exfoliators gently dissolve keratin using salicylic acids or fruit acids. This type of exfoliator is especially good for sensitive skin as you are not scrubbing the skin in the same way as the granular types. I cannot reiterate the importance of this step in your skincare regime. When you exfoliate regularly, you will reveal healthy, glowing and radiant skin, so even your foundation application will be flawless, and let’s be honest; this is something every one of us has on our wish list. Moisturise. When you think of moisturised skin, you think of soft, smooth, supple, hydrated and plump skin. Every skin type needs moisturiser as this replaces any lost moisture caused by pollution, medication, stress, sun damage or chronological ageing. Look for moisturisers which contain Retinol, Vitamin C and E, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, Peptides, Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids. These ingredients are the basics for an effective moisturiser. If you suffer from dehydrated skin, your skin is lacking in moisture, so look for a hydrating crème, something which contains hyaluronic acid as this ingredient holds 1000 x its weight in moisture. Dull skin would benefit from a moisturiser which contains Oxygen and Vitamin C as this imparts radiance and creates a healthy glow. Combination to oily skins usually prefer a light textured moisturising gel or lotion: look for moisturisers containing Retinol, Alpha Hydroxy Acids or plant oils. Plant oils help to regulate sebum production. Dry skin is different from dehydrated skin as it lacks moisture and the latter lacks oil. Facial oils and capsules containing Ceramides are extremely popular as these nourish and feed dry skin. At Reméde Spa we have an amazing range of cleansers, exfoliators and moisturisers that have very high concentrations of active ingredients so you can be sure you’re using premium products. We have something for every skin concern. Also, listen to your skincare consultant or esthetician as they will assist you in choosing the correct one for your skin type. Now that we have the basics down, it’s time to actually begin your skincare regime. To make your life a bit easier, there are a few things you can do to get into the swing of things. Keep your cleansers and exfoliator in the shower so you can use it while you’re there. Creamy cleansers can be kept next to the bed which can be removed easily with tissues. Moisturisers can be kept next to your bed or in your bathroom, to remind you they have to be used. Always remember, good skin doesn’t happen overnight. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see an immediate difference. Patience is the key. You will see those results. Good Luck!

COLOUR CONFIDENCE
ABIGAIL MATHIAS GETS A ONE-TOONE ON GOING BACK TO BASICS AND FINDING THE PERFECT SKIN TONE BLEND WITH FASHION WEEK MAKE UP ARTIST NONIE LOHAKARN.
W
hen she first begins to examine my skin, I am amazed to learn that I have not one, but three skin colours. Nonie Lohakarn suggests that I need to brighten up my look (an image of a sputnik comes to mind) which ultimately helps in bringing out my features. Just as I am about to complain about the time-consuming rituals of a beauty regime, she whips out a brush and starts to gently apply the Diego Dalla Palma 2 W.W. oil free foundation which gets its name as it can be applied in two layers – a single layer for uniform skin tone, and a second layer for a more covering effect, without creating an unnatural look. She alarms me again by informing me that she needs to use a salmon shade for my eyelids. (Salmon is something I only associate with a dish that I bake for the family.) After taking a deep breath and allowing Nonie to work her magic, I am in for a pleasant surprise as the shade indeed lifts my eyes from their slumber. “You need to not be afraid of colour, instead use shades that work for you,” instructs Nonie. She blends the eye colour from the huge array of shades in front of us. DDP has more than 250 shades for face, eyes, lips, nails and hair products. No wonder the brand’s flagship showroom in Milan was hailed by American Vogue as an Italian beauty temple. She then uses the DDP cheek and eye, a two-in-one product that adheres perfectly to the skin, guaranteeing great staying power and absolute comfort. After a quick pause for reflection, she selects a
lip liner and blends it with a shade of lipstick that I certainly would never have tried on. “The plum rose shade is perfect for you,” she says, while my jaw is automatically touching the floor. I offer no resistance and she makes a point when the reflection in the mirror proves that the shade isn’t off the mark. She finishes off with what is called a dark antique pink lip pencil. It helps outline the lips and blend both colours. We aren’t done yet, as she uses a thin black eye liner to outline my eyes. “All done, you are totally transformed,” she says admiring her work of art. It does not take me long to agree. The perky make-up artist Nonie has lived in New York for 10 years during which she worked on New York Fashion Week and other runway events. She now prefers to live in Thailand (which is where she is from) and travels the world offering beauty tips and works closely with Diego Dalla Palma. “Colour is my passion. I believe women of every skin tone can be transformed by finding their true colour confidence,” reads a quote from her website. I was glad to find out that this is a mantra she vehemently follows. The brand just unveiled their latest Spring/Summer collection, La Topolotta, in Qatar and Nonie is in Doha offering make-up tutorials. The line is named after its founder, Diego Della Palma who is also an established make -up artist once referred to by the New York Times as ‘The prophet of cosmetics made in Italy.’ The brand came to life in the mid 70s and quickly expanded to markets all over the world. Diego Della Palma is available at Merch stores.
