I really enjoyed the photo shoot you featured in the February issue of GLAM. The picture on the front cover attracted my eye as the model is wearing my favourite Elie Saab gown! I hope to see more fashion shoots in the future because it gives us shopping addicts an idea of the hottest trends and different things to do with each look. It might be worth doing something on hair and beauty trends too! Laila Nadeira

Doha Style GLAM! I really enjoyed reading the Turning Heads in Doha article. I think it’s interesting to know what other girls living in Doha think of fashion and explore what tips they have on offer. Hope to see you covering more people that live in our city; I think we have a diverse workforce and you’ll definitely be able to find many fashion worthy features to fill your pages! Sana Khan

Dress up like a lady I am so thrilled that feminine dressing has been resurrected. I am a great fan of the 50s and 60s look – the pastel colours, the pencil skirts and A-line dresses set my heart racing. Fashion icons like Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta and Victoria Beckham seem to be attracted towards the retro look as is evident through their collections. I am hoping this trend will continue for a long time! Geraldine Lucas

Size doesn’t matter! Last month, I remember watching a plus size model walking down the runway on TV. When I read the February issue of GLAM, I was pretty surprised to find the same model featured in an article. Crystal Renn is an exception in the modeling world – she has shown that one doesn’t have to be waif-thin, size zero to make a mark on the ramp. Hopefully her success will highlight how successful real women with curves can be! Miranda Keith

Reliving the romance It’s been 5 years since my marriage and in that time I’ve been blessed with a beautiful daughter. I still can’t get over the precious time me and my husband spent together during our honeymoon in France. The museums, churches, cafes oh! It was all so romantic and the feature on Glam refreshed my memories. Now I am trying to convince my husband to venture to France for a second honeymoon! Charline Pinto

A relaxing session After reading the spa review by Vani Saraswathi; I made an effort to visit the spa to see if the sodashi treatment feels as good as it sounds! I reached the spa, and to my surprise, the treatment was just the same as described in the article. The 2 hours session was great and when I returned home I was feeling totally relaxed and refreshed! The first thing I did when I reached home was look into the mirror and I could not believe the difference; my skin was glowing and soft like a petal. Rachel Menez

Spring/Summer offerings from Lanvin ‘Wild Venus’, the latest collection from Lanvin takes shape around an ever-moving spectacle of coloured prisms, drapery in nude tones, body-hugging stretch fabrics and washed techno satin. This season’s evening dresses are also worn with flats. This palette of lines, shoulders and spirals comprises close-fitting jackets fashioned from large mesh vests, sharply pinched waists and strong necklines. Cutaway shoulders echo, faraway places from the streets of Manhattan, to the oasis of the Sahara. Solid colours are enhanced by pinks and fluorescent yellows, the flash of a coral top and long poppy-red skirt, a vibrant mix of shocking pink and dark rust. Laser effects and murmurs of antiquity weave a combined spell – a natural leather belt carries a black sheath with a chunky zip; the very finest silk, faille, taffeta, and satin duchesse turn a gesture into a framework.

The shoulder achieves a new prominence within the collection and in many pieces is revealed, and framed. Featured throughout the collection, back-belts (martingales) with decorative buttons, join, embroider and shape the padded shoulders of dresses and tops, breaking up the expanse of nude back and gently and elegantly referencing fetishistic straps. The collection features inlays in PVC that break up the lines of the silhouette, making it look more sinuous and adding the impression of motion. Whites, red, splashes of turquoise, and blacks are interrupted not only by revealed areas of flesh seen through PVC inlays or sculpted shapes cut into fabric, but also by prints, which appear in the splits of skirts and on fringes.

Micky Green poses for Mango The latest celebrity to collaborate with Mango is Australian model and singer, Micky Green; her chic carefree charm is portrayed in the second edition of the brand’s Spring 2011 catalogue. Green has been busy cementing her global success working with various designers and posing for high-end fashion shoots. The star is currently concentrating on her stage career but took time out to appear in Mango’s catalogue. “I feel very fortunate to have been chosen for this collaboration. Mango is a brilliant brand, so it’s a real honour,” Green reveals. The latest collection from Mango embodies a clean, modern look with emphasis on simple lines and minimalist silhouettes, which shine through fresh bright colours and graphic contrasts in stripes. 20

Vintage Style The amazing Spring Summer collection from M Missoni gathers inspiration from the 60’s where flair hems, low necks, long cardigans and flat pleats ruled fashionable lives; now revived in this promising line to reflect vintage style fused with a modern touch. Funky zigzag patterns and horizontal/vertical stripes feature throughout. Choose from a range of beautiful summery jumpsuits, micro dresses, tank tops and polo shirts to achieve that effortless edgy style. The colour palette is exciting with a variety of spring’s hottest shades including burgundy, aqua green, orange and sand.

Effortlessly Chic Alexa Chung is a fan of this tote, what more can we say! The beautifully designed Aurore handbag from Chloe is a firm hit among the celeb circuit. Inspired by sophisticated sportswear of Hannah MacGibbon’s 2010-2011 Autumn/Winter collection, it also gathers its masculine attributes from the Paddington. Available in two versions, Duffle and Tote, and in two shades, black and caramel, it is a perfect 24 hour bag to carry you from the office to a glitzy evening do.

Women, especially celebrities, are renowned for their fussy temperaments when it comes to choosing a hair stylist. However, maintaining famous clients isn’t a problem for Rossano Ferretti, stylist to the stars, who recently graced Doha’s shores for the opening of his new salon at the Ritz Carlton. Orna Ballout catches up with him to discuss his whirlwind career, problems in the industry, and to lift the lid on his tips & tricks to achieve beautiful hair.

A

t a recent VIP party, men were huddled in one corner of the room, smoking cigars, discussing their latest business ventures; while the ladies were at the other end indulging in good old girly talk. Among the women was Italian icon, Rosanno Ferretti. “My sister and all my female friends tell me I’m the only straight guy they know with a feminine soul,” Ferretti reveals at our meeting on his flying visit to Doha for the opening of his salon. His ability to communicate with women and understand what they want is evident from his success and the elite clientele he caters to, which has included Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, the original supermodels of the 90s. His jet setting career is a far cry from the life he lead in a small Italian village in Parma, growing up. “There were about 350 inhabitants in my village, and apart from a few other families, it was farm animals and nothing else,” he admits. From a young age, he was encouraged to follow in the family footsteps as his mother and grandfather were both hairdressers. Resistant at first, he notes, “I told my mum I wanted to be an architect, not doing shampoo and waves!” But after some encouragement, he satisfied the family wish and attended a salon school where he found himself to be the only male attendee among a group of 17 girls, “Which was good for

me because I like women, and beauty for me is definitely feminine, not masculine.” His learning stint with women helped him spot a niche in the market for male dressers. At the tender age of 15, Ferretti and his scissors were packed on a plane set for the bright lights of London. “It was the ultimate escape from my origin, I couldn’t speak a word of English and knew nothing but I was driven and extremely focused. I discovered my passion in London.” Within a short time span, he quickly developed a name for himself and was commanding attention from all the big players in the fashion industry. At 17, he was the youngest teacher at the prestigious Vidal Sassoon School, and at 19, he was collaborating with the fashion elite, “I did everything very young,” he beams proudly. Ferretti experienced what it feels like to be in demand, as he was inundated with offers from top celebrities, models and actors who requested he accompany them around the world to style their hair. “When you’re cutting hair for Claudia Schiffer, Sharon stone, and Linda Evangelista, it’s a different story. When I did Christy Turlington’s bangs, the world was talking about it. But can you imagine if she didn’t like it; you would be finished.” However, during his career spanning 35 years, he has continually enticed celebrities and built his business empire. He also shares a brilliant relationship with L’Oreal, who recently made

him their worldwide brand ambassador, quite a feat for an Italian to hold this position for a French brand. “I’m the first global ambassador for L’Oreal, and as I’m not French, they decided to make a film to give to hair dressers... showing that it’s possible for dreams to come true.” But how has a man, working in one of the most competitive, cut-throat industries in the world managed to enjoy such a fruitful career? “The beauty industry today is full of franchises, which is not my style. Too many people in this market work like machines and treat the clients like chickens. My goal is for people to have the ultimate hair experience, it is not money orientated, the money is OK but it is not what drives me, passion has to come first.” However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing; before he joined L’Oreal three years ago, he worked with Procter & Gamble who convinced him to franchise his business; something which made him deeply unhappy. “I want people to know about me through word of mouth, not to just spot a salon they don’t know anything about and come in. I cannot be for everybody; it’s just the way I am.” Now, he is really enjoying the fruits of his success with salons in the most sought after locations of top fashion cities like New York, London, Rome, and tapping into developing cities in India and now Doha. With a variety of offers on his plate, there were 25

Tress tips

01

How many times per year should a girl visit a salon? Every 6-10 weeks for a full hair cut or trim. If you want beautiful long hair you should trim it every two months. For colour/highlights – every two months.

often should 02 How girls wash HAIR?

It is important to shampoo frequently and put oil or a mask in the hair every 2 days; this is really advisable to protect hair from everyday pollution.

are the trends 03 What for 2011? The real trend is not to talk about fashion. Just be yourself and personalise your style. Mix high-street brands with haute couture – Zara and Chanel as you prefer. And don’t show off, just be you.

colour is popular 04 What this year?

Red is coming back, natural red, as is Honey, Gold, and natural blonde. The main point is not to damage your hair, or let anyone else damage it.

05

Biggest faux pas girls make? To go into a place for haircut/colour, realise they’re not in the right place and stay put. It’s advisable to get out rather than risk your beauty.

a range of reasons luring him to Doha’s charms. “I only ever chose a location where I find local people to be passionate about my brand. I have a lot of respect for local culture so when I open a salon I like to do it with respect. I’ve spent my time in Doha, like a little boy, studying women. I sat in a reception for three hours looking at how they walk, talk and present themselves. My beauty instinct makes my life easy because I really understand women, I’m really very lucky.” The unique aspect regarding the hair dressing technique that Ferretti passes on to keen enthusiasts at his salon schools is called the Metodo. “We follow the natural falls of the hair

and its harmony. I like to refer to my salons as Hair Spas; we are beauty consultants not beauty merchants.” What also differentiates him from the crowd is his dedication to his staff. “My team are with me because I always respect and support them, they are untouchable. I know what it’s like to come from nothing and build something.” Despite being on the business side of things, he is most happy with a pair of scissors, “they’re my toy and it is my best moment,” he bemuses. Sticking to a stereotypical Italian family man, besides his exciting career, what really makes him tick is residing at his property in the South of Italy with family!

Bloggers on the Block By sonali raman

GLAM catches up with Carla Mallari and Ahmed El Sayed, students at Virginia Commonwealth University and creators of blog Nomad* (http://nomadstyle.tumblr.com)

What inspired you to start a fashion blog in Doha? CM: We were both doing our summer internships and noticed at events and parties that bloggers would come up to us and ask to take pictures. The pictures would then become available online the next day. We thought why not bring this to Qatar as it’s never been done before. AS: When I was in Riga, a friend told me that this guy called Yvan Rodic (the street-style blogger and photographer) was visiting as part of his tour of the Baltics. I saw a guy standing on the street just snapping photos of people and thought it was a bit crazy. A friend told me “that’s him”. People were totally dressed up just for him. It gave me an idea of how street style bloggers can turn blogging into a living.

very big this season, pastel colours. It’s from a guy’s and girl’s point of view; a guy who likes put-together and structure, and a girl that likes alternative, deconstructed looks. It offers variety to the readers.

Tell us about your blog – what do you look out for? CM: We have completely different aesthetics. I look out for really offbeat, colourful, crazy, off the wall kind of designs. AS: If it’s a girl, it has to be quite feminine – the sort of preppy, put-together outfits, like Gossip Girl. When it comes to guys, the crop pants are

Do you think fashion trends here keep up with the global trend? CM: It’s hard for us to say as we are working a few seasons ahead in our fashion promotion class – so we forget about the present trends as we are too far ahead in the future! AS: To be honest, no! In Doha there is a big craze for high-end brands and people forget

How do you plan to drive fashion trends here in Doha – in a sense of contributing to the fashion scene? AS: We’ve been invited to several fashion related and social networking events and are noticing with time that we are being recognised. CM: We are making a name for ourselves as street-style bloggers which hasn’t been done before in Doha. We just want to inspire people about fashion and tell them that if you make an effort to dress up everyday then people will notice.

what looks good on them. In Paris or New York people might even be wearing high street brands from top to bottom and they look fabulous! What do you foresee in Doha’s fashion future? AS: I think it will start with collaborations; like students collaborating with department stores, boutiques and free-lance designers collaborating with the big stores. Magazines collaborating with students. CM: I think there’s going to be a revolution for local designers; we hope so and of course down the line, do a Fashion Week or something! I am going to stay here and kind of be a catalyst to try and create it here. Do you have a special message for Doha visa-vis fashion? CM: Turn everyday into a catwalk! Who cares if you are wearing H&M or Sana? Mix it up; it’s not all about brands and designer names. Add pieces together that will make it your own style rather than just following a trend. AS: Plan ahead and find yourself in your clothes. Make sure that your clothes represent you in the right way. Be yourself! 29

At a loss as to what to wear or how to style yourself? Enter Maisa Taha, with a kitty full of advice. Orna Ballout speaks to Doha’s up and coming image consultant.

WHO’S GOT THE LOOK? 30

T

wenty-eight-year-old Maisa Taha is renowned for her fashion flair. Although she graduated with a degree in Advertising, Maisa followed her fashion desire and furthered her education with a diploma in image consulting before opening her own business, La Vedette (www.lavedette-me. com) in 2009. The fashion and image consulting business based at the Sharq Village & Spa proves to be a popular choice among Doha’s fashion elite who seek a helping hand from someone who knows what women want... Why did you start La Vedette, and how did you realise image consulting was your calling? I have had the idea for quite some time; however, image consulting is not something huge in the Middle-East and it was a big risk as I was unsure of how the market was going to accept it. I felt like I could make a difference helping people and decided to establish La Vedette. Of course, it still is risky as the company is only a year and a half old, but we are becoming quite popular. I’ve always been interested in fashion and whenever I meet people, I’m always thinking to myself, if I put this scarf on you, or put your hair like this, it will improve your look. But, you need a Bachelor’s degree whether you like it or not and there is no specific degree for image consulting. That’s why I studied Advertising, which is something I’m really passionate about and when I’m conducting photo shoots for magazines, I’m on a high! What service do you offer clients? Image consulting is very broad and we cover sessions in body shape analysis, face analysis and colour analysis. We also have a personal shopping service, something that used to be exclusive to celebrities and the royal family. We also do wardrobe renovations and complete makeovers. A new service we recently launched is etiquette classes in areas like social, corporate and dining etiquette. We are professionals with a vast knowledge of what will work for different

GLAM

people, helping you develop an image and tell you what features to focus on and what you need to cover/emphasise. Are you actively involved in the image consulting process? Yes, I conduct the initial image consultation which involves meeting with the client and learning about their life and daily demands. We’re not like a beauty salon where you receive a service and just leave; it is highly important to understand what works for people. I’ll then assign a team member to cover specific areas that require attention. I’m also the Ambassador of the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI) in Doha; which is very important as they provide a platform for people to get into this career. What are your biggest attractions? Personal shopping is very popular with clients, it is really an exclusive service which allows you access to any brand you like. Often clients want pieces hot off the catwalk, which are not always available in Doha; with our contacts, we can arrange for items to be shipped and deliver them to your door. Often people think that if you visit an image consultant, they’ll provide you with the perfect dress instantly. This isn’t the case; we spend a lot of time researching the market to seek the best possible option to suit your hair/ skin colour and present you with a variety of options. Body shape analysis is also popular. Although many of my clients have fantastic figures and can pull things off, some of them are quite self-conscious. Sometimes people need that little push. Our airbrush makeup for the face and body is also successful. It gives clients flawless,

style & the city

glowing skin and all carried out in the comfort of your own home. You obviously have to be very fashion focused, how do you stay ahead of trends? This is such an important aspect of my job. I attend conferences organised by AICI, whatever courses are going, I attend; there are always new techniques to learn, especially with colour analysis. I also try and attend as many fashion shows as possible to learn about brands and the market. There must be a lot of pressure on you to please a client; how do you cope! This is true, however, the trust bond is very important to me and once you’ve built that up, it gets easier. At the beginning of my career, I did fear this but thank God I have never failed any of my clients. For me, I can’t do something that doesn’t look right just to please the client. There are far too many salons that will do what you want, but why pay for consulting if you already know what you want! As an image consultant you work behind the scenes; do your clients tell people you’ve helped them and if they don’t, does this bother you? I understand where people are coming from when they don’t want to share that someone has helped them develop a look. We are not trying to make clients look pretty; we are leading them in the right direction of trends and makeup to follow. Some of my clients are open and will say that I’m behind their look, but the VIP customers like to keep it to themselves, which is perfectly OK. I respect their privacy completely.

APRIL IMAGE CONSULTING EXTRAVAGANZA

Stay tuned for April’s issue of GLAM where Maisa will be showcasing her fabulous talent, conducting an image consultant session and makeover on GLAM’s Orna Ballout. 31

Defining

style

Patrese Essel, a stylist and image consultant started Shapes Image Consultants (www.shapesimageconsultants.co.uk) in England in 2009. The 27 year-old, with qualifications in fashion and business, relocated to Qatar in May 2010. She opens up to sonali Raman about her business.

quotients What inspired you to become a fashion stylist /image consultant? I’ve always loved fashion and as a child used to play with everything fashion orientated. I used to create my own photo shoots with a hairstylist, make-up artist, a photographer. I prefer doing something that I love and get paid for it. Do you see a lot of potential for someone with your skills in Doha? I have only been here nine months and I have built quite a strong client base in this short time. I run workshops as well, the last one was at the Six Senses Spa at the Sharq Village which generated a lot of business – especially Qatari and Omani ladies. Why should people come to you? A lot of the time the clients who come to me are going through a transition period in life. They’ve either just had a baby, gotten a new job or a new social scene. Some people come to me because they’ve fallen ill and either gained weight or lost weight. Their body shape has changed and they don’t know what looks good for them anymore and they are looking for expert guidance. I’ve experienced illness and gained weight myself – 32

so I can relate to that on a more personal level. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about 4 years ago. In general, how do you work with a client? I have an initial consultation with every client, I charge QR 250 for that. I take all their details, take measurements to know their sizes, get to know their interests. Their lifestyle and a look into their wardrobe tells you about the person. Then I would do a Wardrobe Management session where I would go through their wardrobe and tell them what to keep, what they need to get rid of and what they need to add. All the clothes that are taken away are given to Qatar Charity, and not just thrown away. I would advise that they have a style and colour analysis done to know what suits them. I do personal shopping and I would like to offer personal shopping outside of Qatar also. What would you have to keep in mind when working with clients here, in terms of the culture, the lifestyle and traditions? I would like to keep the client unique and still be fashionable, respecting Qatari culture by keeping their arms and legs covered. I’d tell them what’s

appropriate and what’s not. I try to work around this by layering, finding key statement pieces that look glamorous and fabulous even while being covered up. Who are your favourite designers and shops you like? I am personally really excited about ZAI. In fact what I am wearing has been lent to me by ZAI for the photo shoot – dress, earrings and bangle by Lanvin, shoes and bag by Nina Ricci. I personally like Loewe for bags and Lanvin. For my clients – I would say Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, Burberry, and Balenciaga (my favourite). DVF are doing really nice printed dresses for this season – they are very wearable and hide a multitude of sins. Do you see yourself having male clients as well? Yes, male clients are interested in male grooming. I’ve done workshops for this ñ but they feel more comfortable on a one-to-one basis and it’s more suited to the culture here. They are interested in hair styling, what spectacles to wear and what kind of pens to carry. They are more concerned with their hair and face.

Fashion Passion Budding fashion designer Selina Farooqui, originally from India, moved to Doha six years ago. She opens up to Sonali Raman about doha’s fashion scene and the success of her own brand which is available at Cugini in The Pearl Qatar.

Why fashion designing? My sketchbooks from my childhood are full of drawings of clothes. It was when I was in high school that I became aware of the fashion industry. I started drawing shoes and originally wanted to be an accessories designer. However, it’s a bit difficult to get into accessories here. I still create them when I design and make handbags and jewellery to go with my clothes.

How do you plan to drive fashion trends here in Doha – in a sense of contributing to the fashion scene? The girls here are very into trends but they also want something different. They go to a lot of events, family weddings and parties and want something unique. I can offer something different as I take things from their culture and mix it with both Western and Indian flavours.

How would you describe your style, and what you design? It’s very feminine and elegant. I like putting a lot of handmade details on my clothes to give the wearer something unique. Women nowadays are looking for that something special in garments – some detail and embellishment that you can’t really get anywhere else. I like to work with textures and it always has ethnicity but with contemporary shapes.

Where does Doha stand on international fashion trends? The girls here really keep abreast of trends but also like to make their own trends; like the emphasis on accessories you see here is very unique. The exotic jewel tones are very popular and they add the new trends with it. What do you foresee in terms of the fashion industry in Doha, and what role do you think

you’d play in it? It’s growing; the support for young designers has just started. I didn’t realise before that there was so much demand for young designers and for something that is not internationally branded. The boutique culture is starting and I think that’s really important for us. I really hope to play an important role in the scene. Once I graduate, I will have more time to concentrate on making look books and collections. You recently showed at zai boutique. How was the experience? It was really amazing to see people’s reaction to my clothing. It was a real boost to keep me motivated and stay in Qatar. I am working on a new collection which is important as it’s the second impression of me. The first one was good and I want to create something even better. 33

An eye for the unique

T

he store carries 24 brands some of which are LFM, Fernando Pensato, Yuta Pasch, Gia-London, Kardinale, Atos Lombardini and Bottletop. We spoke with this bright young entrepreneur about her store. What was the inspiration behind opening this boutique? It started with my love for fashion combined with my love for travelling and finding the unique. I believe we have a diverse international community in Doha with a sense of awareness for high quality goods and clothing. ModaKey boutique was the way to integrate fashion, art and design and to provide what we have missing in Doha. We have a market gap here, between the luxury groups and the high street brands. I hope, through Moda Key, to fill that vaccuum. What made you select the brands/designers that you showcase here? I try to find labels that provide unique exquisite products of a high quality finish. Naturally I also like to choose brands that I have a personal connection with, so I can build a longterm relationship. As a buyer I evaluate the products and as a fellow designer I appreciate 34

the designers’ work. I want ModaKey to be a boutique where you can find a great product and know a little about the brand itself. Who are your favourite designers and which are the shops you like? I have always found this question very difficult to answer and the reason is I have no specific designer I like. I appreciate many designers for many different reasons. I grew up loving Coco Chanel for her amazing strength and dedication to fashion. Today I appreciate designers such as Isabel and Ruben Toledo, I love Diane Von Furstenberg for the amazing revolution of the wrap dress, but it’s an endless list. The same thing goes for shops – I don’t have a specific one; I love to shop at markets for antique jewellery. I’m always looking for the young brands to find the new, the now and the cool . I love to shop at small boutiques, concept stores and markets: in London – Portobello market; New York – Soho and little boutiques like Musa in avenue K and Collette in Paris, 209 in Berlin. I love shopping in Bali where there are so many unique boutiques. Do you think fashion trends in Doha are in keeping with international trends?

Latifa Al Modahki, a fashion graduate from VCUQ, took a bold step to open a stand-alone boutique in Doha, the first of its kind perhaps. The store, Moda Key, is housed in a villa in Al Saad and is a unique one-stop shop that features diverse international designers. Latifa tells Sonali Raman about her ambitions for her chic new venture.

Yes I do think they are. The women of Doha are very fashionable and always up to date with trends. They have a market gap, so most women shop when they travel but hopefully soon we will be able to say that you could find what you need right here in Doha. What do you foresee for the future of fashion in Doha and your role in promoting it? The fashion industry is still nascent here, and I hope that there will be many local brands to showcase in the coming years, with all the talent available here. I hope my role is not only to showcase that talent but also to provide a platform where they can grow to be international fashion brands.I thank god for VCUQ – I have seen such potential in many of the students and I encourage each one to conquer the fashion industry not just locally but internationally as well. Do you plan to launch your own line /brand in your store in the near future? Without a doubt. I did launch my first handbag collection under my label LFM; my aim is to let it grow to be a strong women’s wear label that includes accessories and shoes. The journey has only just begun with Moda Key. There is much more to come with the will of god.

style & the city

How did you start modelling and why? I first started in Dubai with a L’Oreal hair show when I was just 13. Since then, I was offered a lot of modelling jobs and hair shows for L’Oreal and Schwarzkopf. I didn’t think I would continue to model when I came to Doha, but I was at The Pearl Qatar car show, and a woman comes up to me, gives me her card and says, “Call me”. So I call and she offers me a L’Oreal hair show to do. That’s how it all started; I have signed up with agencies here like Trinity and have been doing fashion shows, photo shoots and work for boutiques. Of the varied work you have done – which kind do you like? I like the annual VCUQ fashion show where the design students showcase their work as there is no pressure at this show – it’s just fun even though the money isn’t that great! I do prefer runway work. What has been your most fantastic experience? I did the IWED bridal fashion show about 3 years ago and think it was just amazing! I like white dresses, so it was really lovely! A show for Splash in Abu Dhabi was a nice experience; the organisers wanted more models and I got to bring my friends to do the show with me. It became a social event more than work! The Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition two years ago was also a fun experience. How would you compare the Doha modelling scene with Dubai? The payment in Dubai is much better! Here it’s a lot easier as the competition in Dubai is much more. Dubai already has a reputation for hosting fashion events and so is much more professional. Doha is still developing, but they will get there. What do you think of the fashion trends here in doha? When you go to the shops or the boutiques – there are really lovely clothes, but sometimes the culture here does not allow one to wear some of the clothes. But I do think the trends in the stores are on a par with Dubai. In terms of people; sometimes in the malls you see some hideous stuff. It’s actually at VCUQ, where I go to study, that I see the most fashionable and well-dressed people! How would you describe your personal style? Fun and edgy, not very casual, not formal, but somewhere in the middle.

Ramna Dominic, a 22 year-old model, with a Mexican grandfather and of Pakistani origin, has been in Doha for just 4 years. A senior interior design student at VCUQ, she chose to come to Doha to study, as it was not too far from her family living in Dubai. She will be graduating this year and has been modelling since she was 13! sonali raman speaks with the exotic looking young model.

What’s the special something in your closet? The coat that I used in the photo shoot now, is one of my favourite! It’s from Dubai and I have only worn it a few times, but I love how it’s fashionable and “Gaga-ish”! I also have a silk skirt with a floral print with grey and peach stones, which I love. What have you learnt from all these years of modelling? It has taught me how to be confident and mature and to deal with different kinds of people, as you meet a lot of people during events. But mostly, it has taught me how to be independent and in charge of myself. This is the most important quality that every woman should have in today's world. 35

Snapping Stereotypes Not many would associate Qatari males with a flair for fashion. However, local photographer, Abdulla Al-Suwaidi, proves to Orna Ballout that nothing is quite like it seems as he reveals

difficulties in Doha, fairytale fashion and

what this city needs to up its fashion ante.

37

Vision: Abdulla working at The Witch and the Swan Princess

Fantasy flair: Abdulla strives to portray subjects as they would like to appear in their fantasies

Do you find it difficult working as a male fashion photographer here or do you think people are quite open-minded? It is difficult because some people do not have the knowledge to understand or appreciate the beauty of fashion photography. However, I am certain that this will all change in a few years. Are any members of your family theatrical or fashion forward? Not really, however my cousin is a fashion designer. My father is successful as an entrepreneur and runs his own business, my mother is a housewife. They are both successful and it is my desire to follow this pattern and excel in my own line of work. As a child, did you envisage your life would turn out like this? I was always in love with the spotlight during my childhood. I thought that I would become an actor, but through the years, I realised I didn’t like acting. I perform much better when I’m controlling projects with my vision and ideas. Does your family support your career choice? 38

Yes, completely. They helped me set up my own studio, however, due to a busy schedule, I had to close it. As long as I’m happy behind the camera, my family will always be supportive. Does fashion photography consume most of your time? I am actually a graphic designer working full time at Jazeera Children’s Channel; photography is something I do in my spare time. Both of these occupations inspire me greatly and I couldn’t forsake either of them. I also have my own production company and we recently produced a fun children’s musical, The Witch and the Swan Princess. Wow, that sounds exciting, tell us more about it... Yes it was very successful. It was held at the Qatar National Theatre, produced by Black Books Productions. I was the director and writer; hopefully we’ll have a few more similar projects in the near future. What lures you to the art of fashion photography; how would you describe your work? Firstly, I enjoy working with people and this led me to this field. I

GLAM

discovered that I loved to create fantasy worlds combined with glamorous lifestyles that people live in. Most of my work revolves around celebrity portraits and high fashion photography; I strive to portray my subjects as they would like to appear in their fantasies. What’s your view on Qatar’s fashion scene? If you asked me this question five years ago, I would have answered differently. However, some of the most famous designers have set up branches in Qatar. We also have one of the best fashion universities, VCU, where many successful designers graduate. I think what the country really needs is a fashion week to showcase both national and international talent. This is highly important for people in the industry to establish new connections and increase exposure. There aren’t that many male Qataris working in the fashion industry; do you think this will change in the future? Unfortunately, there aren’t many working at a professional level but there are a lot of amateurs. Hopefully, through hard work and practice, things

style & the city

will improve. I would like to mention Abdul-Rhaman Al-Kuwari who has great ideas and potential. I am certain that if he keeps working hard, he will become one of the best photographers in Qatar. Who are your inspirations in photography and fashion? I love the work of Makus Klinko and Indriani. I mostly admire Dolce & Gabanna in the fashion realm. However, there isn’t a specific designer that I follow as I don’t like common styles and am always searching for something fresh and new. If you got the opportunity to photograph anyone in the world, who would you choose? Beyonce. Her life story is inspiring and her courage and dedication has got her through difficult times throughout her life, and made her one of the most successful stars. What is your dream? Hopefully one day I’ll produce my own television show. This requires a huge budget and a lot of development but we’ll see what the future holds. 39

Lacoste is renowned for its luxury sportswear and its constant development to propel its status in the fashion scene. Orna Ballout jetted to Dubai for the launch of its new concept, Unconventional Chic, and to discover what other tricks the brand has up its sleeve

Standing Out From the

Crowd

Y

ou’ve probably noticed the quirky new Lacoste advertising campaigns gracing fashion magazines; the four unique ads consist of beautifully clad models adorned in formal gear; for the men, a glitzy suit and the ladies a chic ball-gown. Yet there is a difference, each of the models wears a white Lacoste polo t-shirt over their formal attire in effortlessly cool fashion. This is known as: Unconventional Chic, the new concept introduced from the prestigious French brand. While the mastermind, Lacoste, is not trying to hint that you should accompany your glitziest gear with a polo t-shirt; it is highlighting that people don’t have to conform to stereotypes. The iconic polo t-shirt, also referred to as the L.12.12 polo, is the musthave accessory to achieve a relaxed style, far removed from the dogma of fashion and convention. The brand is portraying a statement that people can wear what they desire, even sportswear to a formal event, to reflect fashion, function and effortless style.

Iconic Inspiration Lacoste has for a long time been associated with its breathtakingly beautiful sportswear, all thanks to its founder, Rene Lacoste, a visionary who broke convention when he brought style to the tennis court with the offering of the polo t-shirt. His contribution to the revolution of fashion is evident from back in the heyday of the 1930s; at a time when everyone conformed to elegance, he stretched the horizon, playing with fabrics and cutting off the sleeves of the shirt to give the player greater freedom and fresh style. Since 1993, Lacoste has continually strived to maintain its founder’s ideals and maintain its presence in the market with innovative style and campaigns. 42

Joining the cause From March 22nd, World Water Day, a special Acqua For Life edition of Acqua di Gio and Acqua di Gioia will be available exclusively at Debenhams and VaVaVoom in the Middle East. Every bottle sold will generate a donation of 100 litres of drinking water per year to children and their communities. Acqua for Life’s objective is to provide several tens of millions of litres of drinking water to populations without any access to it. About 900 million individuals are still deprived of safe, clean and healthy water for their daily essential needs. Water is essential for drinking, eating, guaranteeing a minimum of hygiene and maintaining one’s health. The goal is commensurate to the challenge: offering, this year, a minimum of 40 million litres of drinking water to populations in need. Facebook it Each customer will have the opportunity to double their donation of 100 litres of drinking water by going online. A special and unique code per carton will allow each person to become a member / founder and create his or her own support group for this operation. The Facebook application – www.facebook.com/acquaforlife – will allow each participant to create their own community, send their own promotional kit and invite their friends to join the movement. In this way, everyone shares the awareness-raising message launched and creates a buzz. Via their network, the participants will be able to bring their friends on board through a viral effect. By joining the community created, these friends will automatically donate ten litres of water. The statistics available will allow each user to measure the day-to-day activity and development of their community.

Is this the first time that you are undertaking a campaign of this type and significance? I am always very aware of problems connected to the environment and in particular to water, an element I love very much, since it is regenerative, precious, and essential to life. On this account, last year I committed myself to the Tap Project campaign: an important project focused on raising funds in the United States for positive intervention in areas of the world where the lack of water poses a grave problem that affects children above all. This year I decided to continue along this route, but I wished to contribute more, by becoming involved in a more extensive campaign working in partnership with UNICEF in the United States and Green Cross International, which operates throughout the rest of the world. This is an outstanding initiative that I very much hope will stimulate much greater public awareness. Why did you choose water, rather than another issue? Providing universal access to water definitely constitutes one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Such access is essential for sustainable development, and it is only when such access is guaranteed that countries can implement practical solutions in the field of development and education. Why are you particularly concerned about the threat to children? Because they are always the first victims of water shortage and pollution. Because they are more vulnerable, and because the future of the world rest on their shoulders. Why did you choose to link the perfumes ‘Acqua di Gio’ and ‘Acqua di

Gioia’ to this project? Of all the fragrances I have created, these two are the most closely connected with a perception of nature’s bounty. Freshness and environmental harmony. These are the values they convey, values that seem to me to be perfectly compatible with the principles and the initiatives launched by Green Cross. How long have you known about Green Cross? Why did you choose this organisation in particular? I have been following the work of Green Cross for a number of years. I have always admired the way it projects itself: as a Red Cross working on behalf of the environment. This organisation’s seriousness and integrity, as well as the results it achieves, make it a natural partner of first choice. How did you envisage the web campaign and what are you expecting from it? With the launch of Acqua for Life, we intended to capture maximum public attention. There was an obvious need to develop a specific web strategy using the most popular social network sites. The digital revolution offers opportunities which we must take full advantage of. On a personal level, what does this sort of commitment involve? What does it signify to the Giorgio Armani Group, and how have your staff responded? For me personally, this is a responsibility that I cannot ignore, and I am convinced that my company should be a force for progress. I share this view with all my fellow workers, who have been intensely enthusiastic about the project since the very outset. 45

At just 15 months, Gloria became the successor of a four million dollar trust because of her father’s death; the rail road heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt. Despite being a young heiress, she took her own baby steps in the fashion world. She was among the early developers of designer blue jeans and her jeans are said to have had the perfect fit at that time and not to forget the famous ‘swan logo’ embossed on the back pocket which swam its way onto other products (perfumes, shoes and accessories) under her name as well.

The King’s Speech (which racked up four Oscars) is a story of a remarkable friendship between Prince Albert, Duke of York (Colin Firth) and Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a frustrated Australian actor turned speech therapist. Prince Albert, who has an awful stammer, has given up after all the medical treatments failed to improve his condition and has vowed that he will not go for any therapies ever. Ballet inspiration, clothing that tones your muscles – various fitness tactics are reining the fash pack’s lives. Orna Ballout explores popular choices. Zumba

Kranking

This fast-paced dance routine is a favourite among the fitness enthusiasts of Doha; it’s great for toning muscles and burning fat. Hailing from Colombia in the 90s, the 60 minute workout lends inspiration from a variety of dances including flamenco and salsa, performed to a mix of Latin and international beats. Participants get a fun and frantic exercise routine delving into some serious hip-gyrating action by jumping, clapping hands, and spinning – all to the accompaniment of loud, pumping beats. Zumba classes are available in the Sheraton and Ritz Carlton. GLAM says: Lose your self to the tunes of the fast-paced beat.

This Hollywood fitness craze already counts sexy Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck among its biggest fans. Fitness guru, Johnny Goldberg, the mastermind behind the spinning class, is credited for the development of the Krankcycle. It works similarly to bike but instead it’s your arms that do all the peddling. It is a perfect workout for people who have lower body injuries or find it difficult to complete cardio. GLAM says: Celebrity fav coming to a gym near you soon.

Ballet

Training in bare feet is set to explode in 2011. Running with shoes means you tend to land on the heel which doesn’t impact well on the legs, and can even induce shin or knee problems. Exercising barefoot actually develops stabilisation in ankles, knees and hips, preventing injury while promoting good movement. It’s clear the pastime is growing in popularity with a recently published book by Dr Craig Richards, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Barefoot Running, and a company Vibram FiveFingers has manufactured a shoe, similar to a glove for the foot, thus allowing you to mimic barefoot exercise while still maintaining a little protection. GLAM says: Forget the Jimmy Choos; barefoot is so hot right now.

Thanks to the influx of ballet inspired movies and theatre productions, including Black Swan and The Adjustment Bureau; and the addition of tutu wearing models packing the catwalks; it’s fair to say that ballet is having a moment. Adult ballet classes should be bracing themselves for an increased interest as fitness fashionistas strive for a classier way to get fit, and already the English National Ballet of London has noted an increased demand. GLAM says: Tutus at the ready girls; this chic sport reduces stress levels.

Toning clothing Footwear created to tone up girls legs and bums have been a huge craze of late. The introduction of Sketchers Tone-Ups, FitFlops and Reebok’s EasyTone, have recently flooded the market. Reebok’s EasyTone sparked so much interest that it has now expanded its toning line to include clothing too, Reebok EasyTone Apparel. The new gear has built-in resistance bands that keep muscles working just by wearing them! From tops that tone your upper body muscles to bottoms that strengthen your bum muscles; this range is set to start a rage. GLAM says: Lazy girl’s dreams are coming true...

Barefoot training

zero-Gravity treadmill Expect this to become the new buzzword this year. Exercise that toys with the idea of gravity is set to become popular, as it results in less impact on joints, which is very appealable to people with injuries. How does one do this you ponder? The trick is zero-gravity treadmills, which involve the user putting themselves into a large plastic bag, which inflates around the lower half of the body and supports around

80% of total body weight. The use of this is to prevent the knocking of joints, similar to exercising in a swimming pool. Another popular pastime involving zero-gravity is yoga. The only difference to traditional yoga is that you practice it in a hammock suspended from the ceiling. The ropes aid to create inversions which can reduce back pain and help improve posture. GLAM says: Don’t fret; it is not as scary as it sounds.

Kettlebells While kettlebells have been a firm fixture on the fitness circuit for lengthy periods of time, it’s only recently that they’ve gained popularity, especially with women. They look a bit like cannonballs with handles but are much more versatile than dumb-bells. Part of the attraction is they’re very fun, but you don’t look a bodybuilder lifting them. It’s a good idea to introduce kettlebell exercises into your regular routine as they will challenge core muscles and help build strength, endurance and flexibility. GLAM says: A macho workout that won’t make you resemble a bodybuilder. GLAM says: A feel good workout to pump up those muscles.

Boot camps Outdoor military style sessions have taken the globe by storm in recent years. Maybe it’s the authoritarian, extreme, shouting get-yourbutt-into-shape style which entices girls back for more. It is also extremely beneficial packed with cardiovascular, endurance and flexibility exercises. 2011 is predicted to be even more successful for bootcamp as at the end of 2010, the American College of Sports Medicine, the biggest sports medicine and exercise group in the world, predicted the top 20 fitness trends for the coming year, and a bootcamp was right up there. GLAM says: A.T.T.E.N.T.I.O.N! Got to love the adrenaline rush! 55

Lose Control of Your Senses

We all need a little TLC and escape from reality sometimes. Often the best way of achieving this is delving into a little self-indulgence with some beauty treatments. We called on Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village to review their ability of helping one rejuvenate and unwind.

S

tepping into the spa on a crisp Friday morning, I’ m immediately transported to a realm of fairytale fantasy where living like an Arabian princess quickly becomes a reality. This is achieved by the tasteful decor that dominates the spa surroundings; where each aspect feels like it has been incredibly designed to mimic a traditional souq. Huge wooden doors, large oilburners and a magnificent water feature complement this relaxing aura. The friendly Swedish Spa Manager, Sofia, greets me and briefly tells what to expect from my two treatments, Jojoba Body Scrub and Hot Stone Massage, while escorting me through the myriad of souqesque style corridors leading to the changing room. I m impressed with the inviting spa features including hot/cold plunge pools, steam room and sauna. It is recommended to arrive early to avail of these offerings and relax the muscles before a treatment. However, due to a late Thursday night and an early 10am start, I didn t make it in quite on time!

Jojoba body scrub After a couple of minutes lounging in the relaxation room  which contains comfortable sun beds and is nicely heated thanks to large glass windows that fill it with natural light; my therapist Rima from Indonesia calls me for the commencement of my treatment. To be honest, I was a little apprehensive as I mounted myself on to the bed as I’ ve heard body scrubs can be quite painful. I’ m immediately put at ease when I get a whiff of sweet smelling oils, and before I know it, my body is being coated in the same. The joboba scrub is a simple procedure; oil is massaged in to the skin, followed by a sprinkle of joboba (texture similar to fine sugar) which is scrubbed over the designated body part. The sensation is pleasantly relaxing and not at all what I was expecting. I felt a slight hint of discomfort on my legs for a moment, largely self-inflicted from exercise the previous day a pastime my muscles aren t simply very used to! Every part of my body was given a good scrub of the gentle jojoba and it s really possible to feel the exfoliating benefits. After an hour it was time to

wash off in a blissfully hot shower. It s not recommended to use body wash after receiving a scrub, as it can close up the pores, but I needed a wee bit of assistance as the ingredients proved to be more than a little stubborn. However, when it eventually budged, the results were incredible and my skin felt great, smooth and soft, just like a baby’s. Hot stone massage After my exfoliation bliss, it was on to treatment two, a hot stone massage. My therapist, Rima, was quick to advise me that I should alert her if the stones were too hot for my skin. If you fail to do this, it can result in skin burn. If I wasn t in such a state of relaxation, I would probably have gone into panic mode at this point; and I did briefly toy with the idea of not being able to tell whether a stone was too hot to handle because I was so relaxed! However, up on to the bed I went for round two. The massage started similarly to the scrub, with oils being rubbed all over my skin. I m told that the lavender and jasmine oil used is part of the new product range, Holistic Skin Therapy Range, exclusive to the spa. The massage techniques are similar to a Swiss or holistic massage with the key highlight being the use of the hot stone. The contact of stone on my skin was a really pleasurable sensation and very calming. The stones are so subtle and smooth that it s actually difficult to tell whether it is a hand or a stone doing the work! Every part of the body is worked over, from your head right down to the tops of your toes. One of the clever tactics is to place hot stones on various parts of the body, like along the spine or in the palms of your hands, which I’m told helps improve the flow of energy through the body. The specific stones in use are volcanic lava stones which retain heat well and help the muscles relax much quicker. After 90 minutes of what can only be described as pure bliss, and where I attempted very hard not to doze into the land of nod, it was time to leave my pampered princess thoughts and get back to the reality of the bustling Doha life. One last small treat was a trip to the relaxation room for some hot ginger tea, dates and nuts; truly the icing on the cake of my delightful pampering journey. Wish you were here... Orna Ballout ventures to a resort hidden among Doha’s desert dunes for an exploration of what it has to offer...

A

lthough I’ve been in Qatar for nearly six months, my weekend activity has been limited to the corniche, City Centre and Katara (adventurous!). A visit to Qatar’s dunes has been long overdue and it was about time to venture to Sealine Resort; a place everyone seems to ramble on about. And without hesitance, I was soon desert-bound with a willing companion. A 40-minute drive out of Doha will take you to Mes’said, an industrial township which is now a tourist hub due to its array of exciting desert activities and home to the famed resort. If you’re planning a trip, make sure you fill up with fuel before you travel as there doesn’t seem to be many, if any, petrol stations en route. There is, however, perfect picture opportunities to capture the vast bare desert and camels; just be extra vigilant for huge furry beasts crossing the road. On entry to the resort, we were greeted warmly by the staff who asked us to enjoy the sun, sand and sea. And that’s exactly what we came for, and 58

of course to check out what other fun fulfilled facilities they have up their sleeve. The hotel’s interior decor is pleasant, nothing outlandish. However, the hospitality of the staff is exceptional; as soon as we entered we were greeted and soon whisked away to the sun bathing area outdoors. The outdoor facilities are really what make the resort; natural landscaped gardens decorated with rows of palm trees and inviting swimming pools create a peaceful tranquility; and for a moment, we almost think we’re in Hawaii! It seems to be fairly busy; loud hip-hop tunes are blaring from huge speakers and a marquee is bustling with activity. We quiz a member of staff as to what’s going on and they share that a corporate event is being held, which is apparently quite popular. The beach is a definite highlight; we laze around for hours on the sun loungers drinking tasty mocktails while enjoying the view of the Arabian Gulf’s pristine waters. One thing that irritates people when they visit a beach is the little pebbles that often dominate the sea shore. However, we didn’t encounter any nasty unwanted stones, instead experienced a surprisingly clear sea bottom. A bonus is the fun Aqua Park, consisting of inflatable slides, balls, and seasaws erected in the sea – an assault course of fun to try and mount! Other

GLAM

activities to avail of include horse riding, camel riding and jet-skiing. We were keen to try out the high speed ski machines but as a result of the high winds the weather encouraged, we unfortunately didn’t get the opportunity. We predict that it’s a playground for water sports enthusiasts to show off skills in the sea which contains no jet skiing restrictions. It wasn’t too windy for a camel ride though, and although hesitant, I was soon mounted on a not so obliging beast that didn’t smell the best and made funny noises; all part of the experience though. The resort is also a perfect base to avail of quad bike rides and desert trips. You’ll notice tons of quad bikes lined up on the side of the road on the way to the resort; the going rate is around QR400 per hour but with some charm you might be lucky enough to haggle the price down to QR300. If you have a 4 wheel drive, no need to rent a quad, just drive straight up the sandy pyramids to participate in some ‘dune bashing’; a popular pastime for locals and tourists. The fun but dangerous sport allows you to act out your Topgear fantasy and tackle the mysterious hilly desert dunes; often you’ll find yourself in scary situations slanting sideways on slopes or stuck in the sand – all part of the fun but not a sport for the fainthearted! Be extra careful while ‘bashing’; make sure you slow down when approaching a dune peak as you can’t see what’s on the other side, and this lack of visibility has often been the cause of many crashes. We had soon worked up an appetite and it was time for some grub. The

ESCAPE

resort has a variety of beach bar restaurants to choose from, but what tickled our fancy was the Italian Lagoon Ristorante. The staff here was very welcoming which always adds a special touch and makes a meal a much more memorable experience. Our waitress revealed that the chef had recently been on a trip to Italy to perfect his culinary skills which encouraged our enthusiasm. For starters, we tucked into freshly baked carrot muffin rolls that were so doughy and delicious dipped in garlic butter. The chef’s Italian trip didn’t disappoint and was clearly evident from the prawn cannelloni he whipped up for my main, and also for my friend’s freshly seasoned Hamour. For dessert, we tried one of the hotel’s famous mocktails, the ‘berryanna’; this concoction of mixed berries and ice-cream is aptly named after a member of staff who created for a staff competition and won! This is a perfect getaway resort for families, with plenty of entertainment for the kids and also good for couples with its romantic views. If you decide to stay a night, there are a variety of different options. Each room comes with impressive sea view; however the chalet and villa offerings are equipped with a handy outdoor barbeque area and allow direct access to the beach. After a couple more hours of fun in the sun it was time to head back to the city. An adventure to Sealine is a recommended hotspot to unwind and enjoy the endless beauty and activity the desert provides. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

What the stars foretell in 2011. An overview…

rihanna feb 20th 1988 Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

You often find that you need to search your heart and then talk about how you feel. Now you may feel more able to handle the emotions that are arising, and to say what you have to say, which will bring healing. If you have the courage to express what you are now experiencing, a lot of minor issues will clear up very quickly. It’s an excellent period for gaining more control over your career and for proving yourself competent.

Much will be expected of you at the office, but you will persevere and meet all deadlines and objectives. Love is sweet, exciting, and a bit surreal this month. You’ve learned much about your love life through trial and error, and now you’re in a much wiser position. You’re entering a cycle, of decreased stress and increased bravery. Your credibility is important at this time of the month, and efforts at self-promotion might be made now.

Even though you seem content with your career, you’re ready for some change in your life. This is the time to consider joining a group. How about a book club? Or if you’re more actively inclined, sign up with a tennis team or local running club. There are lots of diversions to occupy your mind as well body. The real upside is that you’re likely to make some wonderful new friends. You will be so happy that this happened that you won’t mind the time you spent on it.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

Your poise and gracious nature serve you well now, Taurus. The best thing you can do now is spend time around other people. Go to a party or other social gathering. It is bound to be a resounding success as you radiate warmth and energy and people respond in kind. Allow everyone the pleasure of basking in your glow. Others find you easy to be around, even inspiring and energising, and are attracted to your assertiveness and courage.

Improved decision making regarding home and family is with you this month. Those of you considering moving or renovating can more easily come to a decision and an agreement with others. While discipline is required when it comes to managing your income, increased benefits can come through others now. You will experience a sense of renewal and reinvigoration with regards to your ability to express yourself spontaneously and creatively.

Gemini

Libra

You’re in charge once again this month, and ready to make ground-breaking changes. Your ability to stand alone is tested, and your confidence in yourself means everything now. You’ve been a little tightlipped of late, but you want to be heard, and you will be. Your personal life, however, is kept private from mid-month. This is a time when impulse buying is at a peak. You should avoid using credit right now, simply because your spending habits may be excessive and impulsive.

Relationship dynamics and negotiations are much improved this month, dear Gemini. Nevertheless, there is much activity and concern in the areas of shared finances and personal matters. It’s an excellent period for resolving to clear up debts and for getting started on a new and improved financial plan. Special attention to and from a partner is in focus, and flattery will get you everywhere if you use it wisely.

You may stumble into an unexpected new friendship, Libra. This could come as the result of a social event or an introduction by a close friend. You will discover new rapport the likes of which you haven’t experienced in a long time. You could spend hours trading ideas. Make sure you exchange contact information. You will definitely want to stay in touch with this person.

Cancer

Now is the time to make your life what you want it to be. March is a strong month for personal magnetism and appeal, improved finances, and a new lease on learning endeavours and communications. You are feeling quite confident and brave this month, but do be careful with extravagance. Employment opportunities and expanded work projects will keep you busy. As long as you don’t accept too much, you’ll have the opportunity to expand your skills.

You need others’ cooperation in order to achieve your goals. Close relationships and partnerships are fired up and demanding. Love requires work and heaps of understanding this month. It would be wise to be especially clear when it comes to communicating with friends, family, romantic partners, and children. Important connections can be made, and possible travel opportunities can come through your work. 66

Scorpio

Aquarius During the last part of the month you will feel confident and strong. Mars and the Sun will be in your sign, bringing motivation and initiative. You will be active and eager to try new experiences during this time. You will put your unique stamp on projects and work cooperatively on your favourite causes. Neptune in your sign will continue to bring a lack of clarity, but you will be creative and highly in tune with others and social interactions will be light and fun.

Pisces Career matters are busy this month, and it’s a good time to analyse your work and streamline them or improve your skills. There may be increased contact with the public now, or you might experience an increased need to be heard and acknowledged for your intelligence, skills, capabilities, and ideas.
