I loved the February issue of GLAM. You guys made my life so much easier by featuring some amazing gift ideas for my special someone. Also, thank you for the tips on how best to enjoy the day here. Wow! We were definitely spoilt with choice! Dina Sameer

Hey GLAM, Your fashion shoot was fantastic. I loved the eye-catching colours of the outfits that the models wore. Never knew you could look that glam while doing yoga. My personal favourite is the animal print pants from Givenchy. Planning to buy one for me soon! Holly Brown

Hi The article on breast enhancement was very interesting. I know of many female acquaintances who have succumbed to the pressure of having a full bosom. To each, her own. But one must learn to appreciate their perfections rather than fret over their little imperfections. The article also had some useful tips on how to fake a fuller size. Must-read ladies! Fatma Oukar

Hello GLAM Would you wear it again? An interesting question that GLAM asked in its February issue. Personally, I would wear it again, but with a twist. It’s not bad to be caught wearing the same ensemble again, but if you are dressed from head to toe like how you were dressed last week, that’s a no-no. We could take a cue or two from style icon Kate Middleton and the Queen of England (read article) on how to wear the same number again. Not to forget, the fabulous tips in the article. Haylee Tayar

Hello, The news of Heidi Klum and Seal split-up came as a shocker to me as well. The couple seemed like a match made in heaven. I wish her all the very best in love, luck and life. Reem Al Faysoor

The beautiful British icon perfectly complements the campaign, as she references the urban, independent and bold woman Mango appeals to. Renowned fashion photographer Terry Richardson captured the beauty that is Kate Moss, as she posed in the brand’s new designs at a house in London. “I’m really excited to be working with MANGO for S/S 2012, we had a great time shooting the campaign, the team are so easy to work with and shooting with Terry is always fun,” Kate Moss said. Mango’s S/S collection is a graphic contrast between clean and unstructured lines. A clear 60s vibe is evident, especially in the dresses. Offering contrast to pure lines is a more casual range featuring sportswear details for a simple urban look.

HOOKS-UP WITH MARNI

High fashion off the rack

38 / MARCH 2012

It’s time now to make room for Marni on H&M shelves. Just a few months ago, Versace’s collaboration with H&M was the buzz. Now, Marni’s Founder and Creative Director Consuelo Castiglioni brings her razzmatazz to the Swedish brand. The collection will be available from March 8 in H&M stores in Qatar. In an exclusive interview to GLAM, Castiglioni and H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch speak about the association.

When you sat down to sketch, how did you marry Marni signature elements to H&M’s attitude? I did a selection of my signature pieces, from clothing

to accessories: something that truly expressed the Marni spirit. H&M did a great job in translating it into a well-made but affordable collection. At any point during this exercise was there a doubt or a conflict in your mind, that what Marni stands for might not make a good fit with what H&M represents, or the end product might not be a perfect sync? No. We all worked very hard to keep high standards and translate the Marni spirit into the collection. I think Marni’s playful spirit fits well with H&M. There are several fashion designers associating themselves with mass retailers. What do you have to say about this trend? It is just part of the global market, and I think there should be room for everything. Also, it is nice to offer younger customers nice fashion to play with. By associations such as this, the fashionistas get a taste of the exquisite without having to pay a hefty price. What are you top tips for looking trendy, even if you can’t afford high price tags? My recommendation, always, is to use instinct and imagination: outfits should be an expression of one’s own personality. Playing with textures, colours, and shapes is indeed great. If you were to open your wardrobe to us, which are the designer labels we would find within, apart from your own. Would high-street fashion be present? As a designer woman, I test my garments as I build the collection. So, you will mostly find Marni in my closet. A t-shirt and some organic cotton pieces from H&M and little else. From the Marni for H&M collection, which is your favourite piece. And from Marni in general, which one? From Marni in general, I can’t really tell: it depends on the season. From the H&M collection I like the sporty trousers/top ensemble in gold lilac lamh, the silk cardigan with a knitted back and the jewellery: they are all quintessentially Marni.

Mixed Doubles

How sports and fashion play ball IF you thought that sports and fashion – one all sweaty and grungy while the other chic and savvy – were poles apart, think again. As top American designer Stephanie Winston Wolkoff expresses: “There’s always a mix of sports, entertainment and fashion. All three come together beautifully. If there’s a way to bring them together, it’s always a success.”

According to Maria, the collection is “fun, chic, fashionable and is able to take you from day to night”. The Williams sisters are no less on court although they have received much flak from fashion critics who have dubbed their outfits as ‘ghastly’ and ‘outrageous’. The duo are known for the bright bold colours of their attire that they complement with a whole lot of bling. Off-field, both are proud owners of fashion lines. While Serena debuted her Aneres fashion line (which is her own name spelled backwards) in 2003 which comprises everyday and evening wear, sister Venus took off on a similar note launching her EleVen clothing line in collaboration with American retail clothing chain Steve and Barry’s in 2007. Both sisters have studied fashion design at the Art Institute of Florida. A flamboyant fashionista, Serena was once quoted saying: “I was born to be a designer. I worked hard to be a tennis player, I don’t work hard to be a designer.” As tennis babes stand stead-fast at the fashion front, how can soccer hunks be far behind? David Beckham is our favourite. A few weeks back, the ace footballer grabbed eyeballs once again with a commercial by H&M that was aired during the Super Bowl. The 30 second black and white teaser had cameras swirling around David Beckham’s chiselled frame, revealing not just his tattoos but the only piece of garment that he wore – a tiny white skivvy from his new David Beckham Bodywear for H&M collection. his wife created quite a stir with some sizzling shoots that they did for Emporio Armani’s underwear range. The fashion line actually does a seamless job in gaining popularity. With faces or rather bodies of Beckham, Christiano Ronaldo and now Rafael Nadal gracing its fashion line campaigns, it’s hard to decide who makes a better poster boy! At cross-roads Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton revealed last year her plans to start a career in fashion after a pretty long stint in cycling. Hassled by the frequent injuries that came her way while training, she chose to step away and venture into the creative field though without any prior experience. Supporting this startling decision of hers was acclaimed designer Paul Smith who also happens to be a cycling enthusiast. Given a chance, Paul Smith would have loved being a professional cyclist himself, he divulged, but a fatal biking accident at age 16 rewrote his fate turning him into a designer instead. However, he continues to share space with his favourite sport through what he does best – designing a range of clothes and accessories inspired by road racing for the UK cycling brand Rapha in addition to a Tour de France jersey and a limited edition range of Paul Smith track bikes. This leaves us thinking: Are fashion and sports each a convenient retreat for the other? As long as it delivers, we are not complaining. MARCH 2012 / 45

How do you eat healthy in Doha? All in moderation – Friday brunch is almost a tradition in Qatar, so don’t try to fight it, but know your limits! Every weekend at the W or the Ritz will show around the waistline regardless of how many calories burnt on the treadmill! Portion sizes will also help to stay fit, too big and your metabolism slows down. Whole foods are key. The less processed the better: Chicken and beef, homemade vegetable soups (thanks to my wife), salads (minus the sauces) and lots of eggs! I’m also a nut-junkie; I always have dried fruit and nuts (unsalted – remember the less processed the better) in a jar wherever I go – instant energy and protein in one! But my favourite go to snack has to be peanut butter and banana on toast.... Hmmm, maybe not for everybody. What’s the big thing in fitness in right now? Functional Training is the new “buzz phrase” in today’s fitness world. Using the body the way it was meant for not only increases your calories burnt, but will also help you in your everyday life, whether it be carrying the baby or the groceries. Functional Training imitates normal day activities while safely working at a higher, calorie-burning intensity. Using tools like TRX, Kettle bells, Swiss balls and Medicine balls to name a few. Functional training is a great new way to improve fitness and look good at the same time. What advice do you have for fitness beginners? With so much contradicting information available nowadays, it’s almost impossible to decide whom to believe...But remind yourself that everybody is different; what may work for Arnold Swarzenegger or Lance Armstrong, may not necessarily work for you. The eating plan your best friend is on may make you fatter! The only way you will know for sure is to start somewhere. Only then will you begin to understand which path maybe the right one for you. So if you haven’t already, Start NOW!! Good luck! 46 / MARCH 2012

How We Live Our Yoga, published by Beacon Press.

What are your top tips for staying fit in Doha? Practice yoga. Yoga can be done any time and any place and it grows into something much more than a fitness regime. What I encourage our students to do is to attend a yoga class at least once or twice a week and then slowly build up a home practice from there. I also suggest complementing yoga practice with walking and a mindful diet. What about nutrition? How do you eat healthy in Doha? I am a big advocate of green juices, smoothies and a near vegetarian diet. There are lots of great fish in Doha and you can also find locally grown fruit and vegetables. Do you have any other fitness secrets or looking good tips you would like to share? I am inspired by Ayurveda, which is a sister science of yoga. This focuses on diet and knowing your dosha type as the main principle of health and beauty. I am equal measure of pitta (fire) and vatta (wind), and for me this translates into making sure I use a lot of heavy oils on my skin and also stay out of the sun. Do you have a favourite healthy restaurant or supermarket in Doha? I like going to the locally-run fruit and vegetable stores to get locally-grown produce. When I get time I like to go to the fruit and vegetable market. What is your greatest food temptation? And how do you overcome it? Chocolate and coffee. And I don’t overcome it, I just try to moderate it and find the darkest chocolate possible. How has Yama Yoga benefited the community? When I first got to Doha I was one of the few yoga teachers. Now due to our teacher-training programme and the way Yama Yoga has fostered yoga in the community, there are many of us and we are teaching yoga all over Doha... We offer pre- and post-natal programs, corporate yoga programs, mindfulness and stress reduction programs...We are also now collaborating with Al Dana Club to offer a fully-developed ladies only programme that will address the needs of our Arabic sisters. Doha is changing so quickly and most of us here work so hard, so it is nice to find those peaceful moments in a safe and supportive community and this is what Yama aims to provide.

David Beckham David Beckham, the world’s original metrosexual, is a man who not only looks swoon-worthy on the football field, but off-field he is a style icon to men the world over. This is a man that can get away with wearing anything – be it a dapper suit, a leather biker jacket with matching leather pants and even a sarong. David unashamedly admits that he enjoys a regular manicure and pedicure and, gasp, once even showed off a set of pink nails. When it comes to hair, David is a trendsetter – we never know what David is going to do with his hair next.

Get Beckham’s look David definitely likes to mix things up and keep us all anticipating his style. It’s all about having staple items which you can add to and mix up according to the latest trends. For example, take your basic tee and jeans then jazz up your outfit using Beckham-style extras like a long wool scarf, Converse sneakers, aviator sunglasses and a utility jacket for the day, and then a blazer, expensive watch and leather shoes for the night. David is also a fan of tough male accessories like cuffs, bracelets, belts and satchels with lots of hardware. MARCH 2012 / 51

Alex Rodriguez New-York Yankees baseball star Alex Rodriguez, or A-Rod, has had many an A-lister on his arm, including Cameron Diaz, Madonna and Kate Hudson to name a few. Not only is he hot property to Hollywood’s finest women, he also sizzles when it comes to off-duty style. Off-pitch he does smart-casual well. A-Rod’s effortless style usually consists of a sweater, jeans, bomber jacket and sports shoes thrown together with a fedora and a wool scarf. While when he wants to smarten things up, he usually opts for a smart jacket over a white shirt unbuttoned at the top, jeans, a chunky belt and military boots. And he’s never without those cool male extras like an expensive watch, sunglasses and a dog-tag pendant.

Get A-Rod’s look If you have on-pitch fever, team a New York Yankees baseball cap with a sweater, jeans and sneakers. To nail A-Rod’s smart-casual cool, opt for a shirt worn under a v-neck top with rolled up jeans and sneakers or military boots. And for an all-out smart look, get out your black suit and team it with a black or dark grey shirt

and black tie.

52 / MARCH 2012

World tennis champion Serena Williams is definitely one sports star whose style has evolved, and improved, throughout her career. She started off in the mid-90s as a teenager straight out of Compton, and her style choices were outlandish to say at the least. (But then again, so was everybody’s style choices during the 90s.) In recent years Serena has seriously upped her fashion credentials, wearing everything from black leather boots, designer jewellery and blingy nails on court. Off-court Serena is classy and chic, wearing bold prints and colours by day, and satin dresses in jewel colours or a black blazer and pants combo teamed with a glitzy top and heels by night.

Get Serena’s look Serena is obviously one sports star who doesn’t shy away from incorporating a little bit of chic while on the tennis court. Make like Serena and don’t shy from serving a ball while wearing classy dangly earrings or after having had your nails done. Steal this style tip from Serena and wear clothes that show off your best assets and hide your least favourite parts of your body - for example, Serena often opts for outfits that skim over her tummy and cover her thighs, but show off the contours of her backside, her legs and her amazingly toned arms.

Russian tennis legend Maria Sharapova loves fashion as much as she loves tennis. As well as being a sports star and selfconfessed fashionista, Maria has also done modelling work for luxury watch brand Tag Heuer and has collaborated on a sportswear line with Cole Haan. Both on-court and off-court Maria is undeniably feminine, from the colourful and flirty tennis dresses custom made for her by Nike, to the on-trend cocktail dresses she wears for red carpet appearances that show off her perfectly toned body.

Get Maria’s look Maria shows us that sportswear does not just have to be about practicality – sportswear brands like Nike, Reebok and Adidas have picked up on this and sportswear today is less about your typical jogging suit and more about cool urban street wear. And let us not forget tennis dresses which now have cute and stylish details like fringing, ruffles, tiers and even Swarovski crystals! Channel Maria’s off-court look by opting for flirty and feminine cocktail dresses with statement necklaces, gold cuffs, dangly earrings, box clutches and embellished heeled sandals.

Style Trek Impression Boutique takes GLAM on a stylish adventure By Orna Ballout

At GLAM, we’re suckers for a fashion adventure, so when Impression boutique got in touch with us about their “Around The World” event, we jumped on board and headed straight to The Pearl Qatar to see what they had in store for us. And what an exciting journey it proved to be. We met special guest Tala Samman who flew into Doha from London to dress mannequins and place ‘Tala Loves’ tags on her fave pieces; enjoyed the interiors dedicated to four of the top fashion cities: New York, Paris, Bombay and Doha; and even got the opportunity to customise our very own ‘statement’ necklace from local talent Selina Farooqui.

Shopping & Styling tips:

Bring this season’s femininity into your T with colour and lace (QR423 Karen Millen)

Not all tees are created equal. Check the quality of stitching and go for tees of 100% cotton with a rich, thick luxurious weave that feels soft yet strong.

Similarly, quality materials,

in a heavier weight stretch knit often drape well to create a more flattering silhouette.

The fit of men’s tees are very different to those of women’s so stick to your department. Beware of the box - a tee that offers no shape, creates a masculine, unflattering form, resembling a milk carton.

Style the classic white tee by

adding textural interest, colour, layers or statement jewelled pieces.

When fitting a new tee, ensure your back bra strap isn’t showing bulge rolls. Same goes for love handles.

The classic, slim-fit tee is destined for well-toned stomachs and perky breasts. If that’s not you, wear something else.

For a tailored approach, wear the tee on days you can support it with a polished look, including a great bag & shoes.

Stock your wardrobe with goes-with-everything neutrals, while adding some bright mood-enhancing tees, too.

It’s all in the DETAILS

By Marlene Naickar

Spring 2012 is here and as the blooms begin to awaken from their long slumber - so too do the catwalks, which come alive with robust colours, fabrics and textures - and it is clear this season, MORE is the new IN. From refined details in lace and flower embellishments, to high-waisted peplums, flower headpieces and swathes of textured organza, tulle and taffeta.

Giambattista Valli

For me Giambattista Valli has scored top marks this season. It is hard to conceive that this is only his second couture collection. As he has amped up the old school glamour gigabyte factor with contemporary vava-voom dressing. His usage of flowing Grecian gowns, and cocktail dresses – swathed in organza, tulle and lace with embellishments – all blend in perfect harmony. From flower epaulets to cocktail dresses dense with beaded embellishments, to the scattering of hydrangea florets across fragile lace, chiffon and cloudy crinoline skirts. Hydrangeas – lush, abundant and intoxicating and Valli has used the spring bloom to full effect – in vibrant shades that emit a rush of warmth to the viewer. Headdresses to this seasons must-have shoulder-less boucli jackets, prettily encircled with tiny blossoms. His evening gowns embody chic romanticism – draped chiffon in organza and colours like biscuit porcelain immersed in tiny florets of little blooms all scattered to create a lavish spectacle. Black and white lace so reminiscent of Monica Belluci in the Dolce Vita 60s – is perfectly married with sleeveless black lacquered crocodile jackets-cut from skins sliced so fine that you could be forgiven for thinking they were mere prints. Valli played with our imaginings of all things fertile and spring, using robust colours, lily of the valley blossoms and hydrangeas to the call of the wild, with crocodile textures to create wearable but decidedly feminine clothes, that drape and create a heady, giddy romanticism. 78 / MARCH 2012

Tailored, sleek and extraordinary hand-detailing encompassing floral bloomed prints, inspirations from the artist Paul Delvaux, looking towards the French queen Marie Antoinette and her pale gowns, to Deborah Turbeville and life was breathed into Valentine Couture 2012. The gifted duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli harnessed the full power of seam stressing and wooed us with the hand-detailing and relentlessly long hours spent on each garment. Total of 3050 hours of labour for some of the eye-catchers in his collection. It is this precision to detail and the endless hours spent to spin this magic that creates couture at its highest level.

Chanel In the Blue; all 154 shades of this once innocuous colour, which symbolised Karl’s showing for Spring Couture. The colour of air, the sky. “Most becoming colour. I am so bored with the red carpet - why not a blue carpet?” mused the outspoken Chanel Couturier...and he is right. Blue, the colour of his Burmese cat to the intensity of sapphires. Witty, simple but chic, cleverly constructed colour block dresses. Day dresses treated in Chanel’s statement tweeds, bisected with bands around the collar bone and pockets. The effortlessness of this collection is reminiscent of Coco Chanel herself; relaxed with her habitual gentle ease of stance. A little masculine at times and then pushing towards extreme femininity, by playing with embellishments from crystals and lurex in chic evening suits. Longer, slimmer silhouettes, ankle length coat dresses, narrow skirts all accentuating the proportions and the feminine form. MARCH 2012 / 79

In attempting to leave behind the John Galliano, fracas , the new, reserved creative director at the helm William Gayten chose to take a more serene, tried and tested route. Whilst it is clever in the sense that this season and for seasons to come it is all about that 50s glamour in pretty, feminine and elegant clothes, but with a modern 21st century tone. The whole collection was based on serpents, from textures and patterns, to colours poison green, teal and chartreuse. Pamper Time at Rony Nacouzi The Pearl Qatar recently welcomed new salon Rony Nacouzi to the block, and in true GLAM style, we had to experience its offerings By Orna Ballout

Hair Care Since a youngster, my hair has always been long and dark brown. Boring, I know. I’ve been terrified to experiment with edgy or fashion forward styles, and in fact, before my trip to newly opened salon Rony Nacouzi, I had never even dyed my hair. As I sat down for my consultation with friendly French hair stylist Yann, I felt a little nervous as he enthusiastically shared the words ‘short’ and ‘highlights’. I’ve been a fan of Kim Kardashian’s long bangs for quite some time, but after 23 years on this planet with the same mundane style, I reminded myself to embrace the change and go with it. Yann swiftly started working away, and within 15 minutes of careful cutting, my hair was noticeably shorter, but to my delight – not as short

as I had feared. Phew! Christiane, in charge of hair treatments, was next to place a toner treatment that I was informed would help nourish and protect my hair. After this procedure, colour whizz David worked his magic, adding highlights that he assured would be “very natural” and help achieve a sun-kissed look. After a wash and blow dry, my hair was whipped up into rollers and left to set. Then it was time for round two of my beauty experience – a mani and pedi with the delightful Nancy. 82 / MARCH 2012

Move it!

You’re body is designed to move. Look at it. Arms and legs, lungs and heart, muscles, bones, joints all designed by some great intelligence to propel us through life. So why in our limited human wisdom do we choose to deny ourselves the necessity of and pleasure of moving?

1

3

0 Here are the top ten reasons I’ve heard from clients, colleagues, friends and family as to why they just “can’t” exercise, and my recommendations for getting out of your own way.

No time

Haven’t developed the habit

Do you have time to be sick? Seriously! Make time for exercise or make time for sickness. You were designed to move, so do it. What are you putting as priorities in your life? TV and computer watching, work, being a taxi for your kids, household chores, entertaining and social activities, studying? You do have 20 minutes in the day to take care of commitments outside of your body, you also have 20 minutes a day to honour your responsibility to care for the biological machine that sustains your life. (see box on how to burn fat in 20 minutes a day)

So develop the habit. It’s simple. There are so many ways to start a new habit - the key is to stop thinking about it and START! It gets easier and easier after the first step in the right direction.

No energy It’s a vicious circle. Don’t exercise = less energy. More physical activity = more energy. Just get started with small increases in the amount of physical activity you do and the energy you have will increase. Make changes in your diet - eat more natural energy foods and drink more water. Remove foods that drain energy such as caffeine, processed foods, sugars and poor quality fats.

02

84 / MARCH 2012

0 No motivation

If the spectre of living a life of sickness, pain, accelerated ageing, cognitive and physical deterioration is not enough to motivate you to get off the couch and out from behind the computer, why not picture yourself experiencing life in a body that is youthful, energetic, vibrant, pain and disease free, attractive and intelligent. Create a series of rewards for yourself for achieving small steps forward in your health goals.

Can’t afford it.

Too overwhelming

I’m sick, diseased or disabled

Really? How much does moving cost? You can walk up and down the steps at your house or office, dance to your favourite music while you make dinner, go for a walk around your neighbourhood, sit on the couch and move your arms and legs while you watch your favourite TV soap opera. You get the idea. You don’t need expensive equipment or a gym membership or even clothes! You were gifted with everything you need to move – use what you have.

Stop trying to be perfect. You’re not planning to run a marathon, you’re just getting moving. Take it one step, hop, skip, jump, breath at a time. Keep it simple and start with something that you enjoy doing.

You may not be perfect (who is?) but parts of you are fabulous. Use these parts anyway you can – move them! Use whatever level of mobility you have as a starting point and continue from there. Use what you have or you might lose it all together.

Too boring

I’m embarrassed to go to the gym or exercise class

I don’t need to. Are you telling me that your body functions differently to every other human being on the planet? Were you designed not to need to move? Can your lymphatic, circulatory, immune, digestive and elimination systems function effectively for any length of time without meaningful physical exercise? If you answered yes – you are a miracle and the worlds scientists will be looking to do experiments on you.

06

Creating a body that is vibrant and healthy is fun. The options for movement and exercise are as endless as your imagination. If you need inspiration - search the internet, ask a friend, buy a DVD, get into nature, try a new exercise class, pull your stomach muscles in while you are driving, dance, throw a frisbee, juggle a ball, join a group or go it alone. Keep the variety in your movement routines to keep it fresh and interesting.

08

Don’t go. There are so many ways you can exercise and move that don’t include the gym or an exercise class. Do what you are comfortable doing. As you gain more confidence in your body and its abilities, you can try out a gym or class or not. The choice is always yours.

Remove your make up before you go to bed After a long day, it can be easier said than done and it is OK to give yourself a little bit of leeway. If you went to the gym or a party and have been sweating while wearing makeup, this is when it’s most important. One minute is all it takes but if you’re feeling lazy try to have some make-up remover wipes in your bathroom, it’s almost as good as washing your face with water, and a vast improvement over going to bed with a dirty face. If you absolutely can’t wash your face, make sure you change your pillow cover the next morning so that you don’t sleep on the same make-up two nights in a row.

Try to double cleanse your skin to give it a deeper clean. The first cleanse will remove make up and any surface dirt, the second will help to remove impurities that might be clogged in your pores.

Exfoliate regularly This is s great for your skin. It will clear the surface of your skin from sluggish dead skin cells resulting in a smoother more radiant complexion while also helping to unclog pores. There are two kinds of exfoliators available on the market: Physical scrubs or beads that manually slough away the dead skin cells. Make sure you pick the right one for you. the luxurious salon. I simply loved it!! The body treatment was the part I enjoyed most; exfoliation, massage and a body mask and finished with a body cream that left my skin feeling so hydrated. It was so relaxing...nice atmosphere and the staff were so professional. About my nails, I can say that I love them. It is first time to that I have tried Shellac, I love it and I know I will do it again. Nails Boutique is a place that I would highly recommend to everyone. A big THANK YOU to all the team involved in this ‘’Manicure contest” Unforgettable experience, great people, great idea! Thanks, Emma!

Don’t neglect your hands

Regular manicures will keep your nails looking in tip top condition but great nails need great hands too and nothing gives away your age quite like they can but you don’t need to work too hard to help prevent the signs of aging, just apply the same cream onto your hands that you use on your face day and night and again, don’t forget the sunscreen. 90 / MARCH 2012

Most people think that White Stain is a female run brand, and when they realise it's a malemanaged design brand, their expectations completely change." GLAM put the bubbly designer on the spot when we asked him to describe his collection in one word. "It has to be whitestained, which is what I always do; something white and I stain it. I think white goes with any colour and with every single season."

Selina Farooqui

Selina Farooqui is no stranger working with W Doha, having previously been inspired by the hotel for her W by Night collection; this time she's taking it in a whole other direction. "This range is focusing more on my identity as a designer. It's going to travel to Turkey with me for a showcase in W Istanbul, so I'm trying to put in everything that's uniquely mine. It features a lot of RTW separates, and a lot of India and Middle East influences." With so many beautiful pieces on offer, ladies seeking that something special are really spoiled for choice. "This year I'm focusing on mixing different kinds of fabrics like tweed, but I'm adding beading and things to create contrast between East and West. Women here are always looking for a beautiful dress, and I tend to focus on dresses, skirts and jackets – I haven't ventured into pants yet." It seems that Farooqui knows what women want, as she has recently developed a jewellery line to complement her collection. "It's mainly statement necklaces but I'm exploring bracelets and earrings too. Women love accessorising, so I started designing necklaces which are available online and also in impression boutique on a custom order basis." The talented designer is certainly keeping busy, as she's juggling a full time job as a designer at VCUQ with the maintenance of her own business. "Multitasking is challenging. It's really hard to have a full time job and go home to completely switch chains of thought and run a business. I'm managing and I'm so determined that I don't let it stop me and just keep going."

What the stars foretell...

JESSICA BIEL

march 3, 1982, pisces

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Be happy. Your family life is going the way you want it to be. Communication with relatives and close friends keeps you busy throughout the month. Try and accommodate short trips into your busy schedule, these escapades are fun. On the flipside, you will have to deal with your insecurities. Work your way around them by coming up with your own solutions.

Friction with friends may be a point of concern in March as you look at different ways of not getting into arguments. If they do crop up, try and keep your cool. There’s no sense in doing or saying something you may regret later. At work, a promotion is on the cards. You’ll realise it’s well worth the wait.

Relationships may not always work out the way you want them to be. If you are accused of something you are not even aware of, keep your cool. Instead of blowing your top, be firm and let people know that they cannot use you. Once the message goes across, they will learn to behave.

Virgo

Capricorn

Money makes the world go around. And it will for you this month. Unexpected returns on investments will add a sizeable sum to your bank balance. But that does not mean you go overboard on the spending. Be cautious and save for a rainy day as well.

It’s time you learnt to say no. It’s better to do a few things well than a bunch of things shoddily. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t take anything more. Much is happening in your career front this month. Taking a reality check from time to time will help you understand yourself.

It’s a month of challenges and it’s your strength, courage and determination that will help you move forward. Don’t take them as stumbling blocks but rather as lessons on the road of life. The one happy lining is that your family will be with you through thick and thin. Revel in the togetherness life offers you.

Gemini

Libra

Aquarius

It’s time for you to go through a complete makeover. Go for a vacation, pamper yourself and get rejuvenated throughout the month. It’s sometimes good to indulge yourself. Work-wise too your career looks great. Be happy from within and it will reflect on the outside.

It’s vacation time! Pack those bags and head to places where spring is in ‘full bloom’. Go someplace exotic and pamper yourself. It’s also a time for rumination as to where your life is heading. Expect those answers to come from within.

It’s time to make a number of decisions regarding where your work life is going. Do you want to stick on to a boring and monotonous routine? Or do you want to take the risk and do ‘your own thing’. Dwell deep and you will find the answers. If you are afraid, listen to your heart. Most of the time, it has the right answers.

Taurus

Scorpio Cancer This month just slow down and take it easy. A part of you will want to go all out and the other part will want to stay and be still. It’s a tough call so don’t go overboard on anything - your job, your family or friends. Avoid an argument with a sibling. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. 110 / MARCH 2012

Money and health are major issues you may have to confront this month. Any niggling pains you have should be shown to the doctor immediately. Timely intervention means timely cure. A lot of unexpected expenses may throw you off gear this month. So tread cautiously on the financial front.

Pisces It’s DIY time as you will be busy with many home improvement plans. This will keep those creative energies up. And when the compliments come your way, you’ll understand that life’s not all about the workplace and doing something you like should be on the list of priorities. Happiness does come in different ways!
