It was intriguing to read about the cover story star – Zallascht Sadat. What a lucky girl to win both Miss Afghanistan Germany and Miss Deutschland. It is great that Zallascht received good support from people in Afghanistan – she’s doing a great job, keep it up! Rolla Kennedy

Camp It Up Hello GLAM magazine! Thanks for telling me about the great upcoming global gatherings! I was looking for a holiday fusing fun, music, and good nightlife – so I’ve booked tickets to Oxegen festival in Ireland for something a little different. All you guys need to do now is tell me about the latest camping fashions. Are Hunter wellington boots still hot this year? Mini-skirts v hot pants... So many questions GLAM, awaiting your answers! Reem Garbot

VCUQ design I recently attended the VCU fashion show and was dazzled by the mesmerising collections, and it was interesting to read a little about the designers beforehand in your last issue. I think VCUQ is doing a fantastic job of turning out budding designers who are set to boost Doha’s fashion profile immensely. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long until Doha has a fully fledged fashion scene, featuring a fashion week just like all the other fashion cities. Leila Kamal

Furry Friends The puppies in Pooch Power are soooo cute! I’ve been obsessing about owning a puppy for many months now and hopefully can convince my parents to get me one soon. But hey, they’re hard work, right? I know lots of people tend to think that a cute pooch is an accessory, but I understand the commitment required to take care of one. I’m going to send pictures to you of my perfect pup when I find him! Alice Grainger

East Inspiring the West I was so proud to read that oriental fashion is one of the hottest trends of the summer, and that the East is inspiring Western fashion. Our country has many unique aspects so it is truly honorable to inspire other parts of the world, especially in fashion. Sheikha Mozah is my number one style icon; her outfits are always so chic, classic, and contemporary with a traditional touch. Hope we keep up the inspiration! Maha Al-Suwairi

This collection is aptly named, Cosmic Rock, which references the inspiration gathered by Paul’s design career in the late 60’s/early 70’s; at a time when he was influenced by the fashion sense, modern meets vintage, of rock legends Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. The key looks that inspired his vision were surreal galaxy prints, occult signs, batik, military costumes and vibrant cosmic inspired colours. “It is not a collection that is about a retro look but it is very new using modern fabrics,” says Paul about the concept of the collection.

Louis Vuitton

The super suave collection from Louis Vuitton is an eclectic mix of how the modern global man dresses today – from Scandinavia to China and Brazil. Lacoste

“Sporty and chic. Easy and playful. Clean and clear. In short, modern minimal classic,” is the style ambition of the S/S collection according to Lacoste Creative Director Christophe Lemaire. The architectural and graphic collection draws inspiration from geometrical patterns of Op Art, the bold lines of Bauhaus and from early modernist Villa Noailles designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens. The Man

Drawer his rather condescending term was coined – by women, as if you didn’t know – to refer to the place where a man keeps his most personal of belongings. It’s from the same stable as “man flu”, another satirical slight from our female friends, for when they feel we are exaggerating the symptoms of the common cold – which we most definitely are not. The “man drawer” is his sacred place, where women dare not go. I can categorically confirm that the man drawer isn’t a myth or indeed an extension of the truth. It is very real, and very practical. It doesn’t have to be a drawer – it could potentially be a shelf in a press – but all examples follow one rule of thumb: Everything there has a good reason to be there. To the untrained eye, it may seem like a mess; a heap of correspondence usually floats on top, hiding the real important stuff underneath. The reason for this is two-fold; Because other members of his household know this is his personal space and stuff anything related to him is in there. It’s an effective repelling technique employed by the owner to keep nosey and straying busybodies out of their business. He doesn’t feel the need to put it under lock and key as that’s not what the man drawer is about. Possessions that need such high-security are given their due regard, but man drawer items are usually only useful to him, or can be bought on his next trip to the mall for a small, but frustrating price. So what’s the classic inventory of a mandrawer? Of course it’s specific to each man’s 38

Rory Coen sheds light on that random space where men like to store gadgets, gizmos and all that jazz...

personal habits, hygiene and tastes. One man’s rubbish is another’s treasure is as appropriate in this context as any other. Many items – which seem absolutely bizarre – might hold personal or sentimental value to the owner. You’d be surprised by the workings of the male mind when it comes to inclusion. Handy tools. When a man goes to an exhibition, he sees things he feels will be forever useful in his life and he purchases them, brings them home and puts them in his man drawer. Instructions for appliances. The man knows that appliances will give trouble from time to time and when they do, he knows his first portof-call. Foreign Currency. As much for its practical use for the future, the man likes to hold on to

foreign currency to brag about the places he has been to. Take-Away menus. A man can’t have enough of these. They get stuffed through the letter-box like junk-mail, but they’re always given a home in the man-drawer. Sporty men use it for their various interests. For instance, the golfer comes home and empties the contents of his pockets into the front corner, which might include a half-dozen tees, a couple of markers, a small pencil and a course-card. Depending on how he played, the card will either be retained in the drawer indefinitely or tossed into the bin when next retrieved. Other sporting items might include a stud-tightener (or spare studs) for a football boot, tape/grip for a racket, or various other gadgets that should improve his performance at his given sport. It’s all very well and good for ladies to laugh at the idea of us keeping all our important stuff in one place. They have practically the same policy, only with more mobility; they carry everything around in those over-sized handbags; the contents of which overwhelms us to be perfectly honest. Men prefer to have a base and relate back to it when necessary; a much more practical approach.

Where are all

the Cave men? I’m a big believer in the “keep it simple” principle. Eat more fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of clean water, move your body often, sleep early rise early, create work-life balance, develop nourishing relationships and have a regular spiritual practice. These are principles of health and happiness that I subscribe to in my own life. My husband on the other hand has taken this simplicity one step further - he believes in what he calls the cave man concept! he first time I heard him say this I giggled thinking it was just another way that he was keen to tease me about my new found love of healthy living. When I thought about it though, it made really good sense. Basically the idea is that you bring your food style and lifestyle back to a natural state. Let’s take food for example. If we were living back in prehistoric times when our bodies were in their most natural state, we would forage for fresh food daily and hunt and kill wild game on occasions. There was no farming, no agriculture, no intensive livestock programs, no chemicals, preservatives, artificial colours and flavourings. You ate when you were hungry and consumed what was in season. Food was locally grown, natural and whole and for the most part it was also raw. You took only what you needed and nothing was wasted. You drank when you were thirsty and the water came from flowing clean clear streams. There were no big industries or companies around to convince you to consume their man-made machined products masquerading as food. Exercise – what was that? You moved your body all the time. Either you were chasing your food or you expended significant energy in finding and gathering it. You were active all day, rested when the sun was high overhead, and went to sleep soon after dark, rising with the early dawn light. Work was part of life – no work-life balance issues back in the cave. Time was spent with people you cared about, creating tools, building dwellings, collecting firewood, tracking game, watching the seasons for signs of change, creating ways to protect and provide for each other. When 42

the day time activities were low or the weather forced you under cover, you created music, played games, made carvings, drew on the walls, made up stories to entertain, inspire, calm the tribe. Working hard and being actively engaged in meaningful productive activities was how you existed. Relationships were key to day to day survival. The tribe needed you and you needed the tribe. It was cold, hot or dangerous outside the cave, so you managed your emotions, became a skilled communicator, found ways to keep the peace and work effectively together. Or you used your physical strength to dominate and control. You had a close connection with the earth, the seasons, the cycles of life and your body’s needs. You lived a life fully integrated with nature and its forces, with a clear concept of the existence of a power greater than you. You were actively grateful for everything that you had received and looked forward to what would be provided in the next season, taking care of the world around you so it would took care of you. There is no denying that there are huge advantages for a man living in this modern world. Modern life is easy and it would be rare that you would be called upon to protect your loved ones against wild animals, competing tribes, the natural elements, or starvation. However as a species we are suffering and heading for catastrophe. Diabetes, cancers, depression, obesity, chronic lifestyle related illnesses are in epidemic proportions, relationship difficulties and divorce are common, and our environment is toxic. Perhaps it’s time to get back to the Cave, to redefine and create the Modern Cave man.

Fashion & Beauty Blend Heba Al-Okar, co-founder of popular spa, dados, and fashion forward boutique, Cugini by dados Fashion, tells Orna Ballout about her two prestigious projects. Vibrant Heba Al-Okar is well-known in Doha for her fashion projects. Of Palestinian/ Lebanese descent, she was born and raised in Qatar, before jet-setting between Switzerland and England, educating herself with a Masters in Marketing. On coming back to Qatar, she had stints working in Al Jazeera and Qatar Foundation before co-founding ultra girly spa, dados, in 2008 with her sister Hanadi. The dream of owning a boutique that the Al-Okar sisters envisioned as children was further cemented with the opening of successful boutique, Cugini by dados fashion, at The Pearl-Qatar, in December 2008.

dados dados, a quirky spa/boutique, located on the ground floor of Al-Seal residential building in West Bay is the perfect getaway for people to unwind, while at the same time, find a unique buy. “The half fashion/ beauty idea is inspired from our travels, especially Japan,” Heba reveals. The fusion is a breath of fresh air with its welcoming ambience and cool decor. There is a range of enticing treatments available, and it is the only spa in Doha providing pre and post natal treatments. An important aspect of dados is its loyalty to Reach Out To Asia; QR 2 from every treatment is donated to help students in Indonesia attend the SMK Bayat Vocational School, which teaches them the art of textile design and ceramics, indigenous to the Bayat Area. According to Heba: “It is really our belief that if you give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.”

Heba’s View on... S/S Trends Beige is my new thing. In the past I never really dared to wear earthy colours but this season I love them. I don’t follow trends to a tee; I give everything a Heba twist! Favourite Brands Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen, and Giuseppe Zanotti for shoes. Personal Style I strive to be comfortable, yet at the same time trendy and classic. I always tend to wear something unique that people ask me where I got it from. I must admit, I’m addicted to shopping! Qatar’s Fashion scene It is really improving; there are lots of bloggers and upcoming designers, and everybody is targeting Doha Fashion Week. You can really feel the enthusiasm; style is much more daring.

Cugini by Dados Fashion Every discerning fashionista has heard of hip boutique, Cugini by dados fashion, located at The PearlQatar. “Parisian Chic – Middle East Style” is the motto of the cool store stocking the best of both local and international talent. Heba spends a lot of time travelling abroad, seeking those show stopping pieces the boutique is famous for; “We try to bring something new but always keeping the culture in mind,” she reveals. The importance of promoting the local fashion scene is evident in the designers the store stocks. “We really try to play an important part in the educational process of students. We provide internships and work with a lot of budding VCU-Q students, notably, Selina Farooqui, and we’ll soon be stocking Roqaya Al Thani.”

Fashion Advice Wear what suits you; don’t just follow fashion for sake of fashion. Always have your personality showing and never forget the colour of your skin. Fashion is about expression – personalise your style and make it your own. Importance of a local industry It is so important to have local stores and designers too for the unique aspect. People want something different, especially people visiting Doha. Having the big trend setting brands is great, but you could be anywhere in the world when you’re shopping in some of the malls...

t’s quite a feat for a successful fashion designer to put their own collection on hold to concentrate on another brand’s line. This, however, was a no-brainer for Leonello Borghi, who transitioned to become Artistic Director of Iconic French brand, Lancel, in 2010. The self-confessed accessories addict from Florence, Italy, has a wealth of experience racked up on his impressive CV, having worked closely with legendary style tycoons including Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Prada. It’s an accomplishment for an Italian to work for a brand famous for its French heritage; how did the collaboration come about? Throughout the years I’ve been basing my time between Paris and New York, and I think that, after a while, people start talking and everyone in the industry gains an understanding of who does what. I had been with Ralph Lauren for eight years with when I was approached by Lancel. Its France’s first accessories maison that ever existed; when you appreciate the value and legacy, it’s a total honour.

Why has Lancel opened a store in Doha? The Middle East is very important for us in terms of development. We feel that Qataris have a real knowledge for luxury and are very chic the way they wear accessories. Being Italian, I also personally have a lot of similarities with the behaviour of people here...their look and that Mediterranean feel. The store looks fantastic, what’s the concept? The Idea is of a ‘bag gallery’. There is a masculine element so the bags inside the units really pop; at the same time it is quite understated and really feels like you’ve entered a gallery. Was it always your vision as a child to venture into fashion design? I grew up fascinated by my mother’s closet-she had plenty of bags and accessories. After fashion school, I was by chance hired by Gino Ferruzi. He really taught me how to appreciate leather and it became almost an obsession-everything about it is intoxicating. 47

Show Stopping The concept of the sophisticated new Lancel store at The Pearl-Qatar, is to create a ‘bag gallery’ with an extensive display of vintage and modern designs

Do you find yourself following a set pattern working with Lancel or do you have a lot of control to do as you please? No, I think what is important when you have a brand like Lancel with such essence, is to safeguard it. That essentially is what my job is; keeping the brand true to its origin and the spirit that Madame Lancel created all those years ago. My background has always been with brands focused on evolution, not transformation. Lancel is a brand that needs to be brought to the future but along with its legitimacy and history. That’s what makes us different; we’re not followers or trendsetters - we have a unique philosophy. What new aspects did you bring to the brand? For me it was about purifying the brand, getting rid of anything that was plus and bringing it back to the essentials. Making sure that every bag had a point of reference from our amazing archives; adding new styling was important but always maintaining the history. Our museum in Paris is the richest museum of accessories I’ve ever seen with thousands of bags dating from 1876 till today. Do you prefer gathering inspiration from the archives? The archives are really important because it makes you understand just how innovative Madame Lancel was. It is not about duplicating but getting inspiration; really understanding the amount of detail in the strap, closure and then applying it to today’s looks. Otherwise you’re just a fashion brand that changes from season to season. We are not a fashion brand – we’ve existed since 1876 and will be here in a 100 years. You were behind the Brigitte Bardot bag, if you were to choose a modern day muse, who would it be? Her... (laughs) because of her spirit. It is not necessarily one specific 48

person; it’s a way of living. That’s what we call the French Legerte-it’s a way of looking at life; being beautiful in a national way. It is not about being overly trendy but being comfortable in your skin and having a sense of humour. It’s an attitude and a philosophy of life. What’s your personal favourite? Oh my gosh they’re all babies. How can you have a favourite baby! I really love them all, that’s why it was really important when I arrived to really get to the essence of the brand. Purify the line; making sure that everything we have we are proud of. At the end of the day, when we create, open stores, and do events, it is a big team effort. We’re all in same direction which is quite important because you feel like you’re part of nice movement. Who is the biggest competition for Lancel? Funnily enough, it might sound pretentious but it’s true – we don’t have any direct competitors. Because of the way we position ourselves and our history; it’s hard to compare us because no-one has really existed since 1876. At that time, Vuitton was luggage and Hermes was doing harnesses for horses. We are very unique in that sense. We are a very democratic brand; any customer can come in to the store and find something at any price point ranging from QR1000 to QR25, 000. We never look at what other people do, we always look inside. It actually works the other way around; we’re inspiration for other brands! Where do you really want to bring the brand; what’s your vision? My goal is to make our brand available to more regions and bring the French spirit around the world. Our stores and products are unique; people are buying into pieces of history, discovering vintages and the philosophy of products.

The Trend Train Destination Paris

Springtime in Paris By Marlene Naickar

I was in Paris last week, after waking at the crack of dawn to board the 6.30 Thalys to Gare du Nord in Central Paris, the warmth of the Amsterdam morning,

pringtime in Paris – is like no other. The air wafts with energy, lattes, freshly baked pain au raisins, sun-filled bistro terraces and a beckoning into an ancient, hidden garden – all filled with cobbled streets, antiquated museums, palatial buildings and operatic and at times in a cinematic fashion as Cole Porter so aptly puts it..

I love Paris in the springtime. I love Paris in the fall. I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles, I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles. But springtime’s still the best of all. The fashion Avenue Montaigne comes alive into a street filled with colour - the sleepy titans Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabbana, Loewe – all awake with colour infused drama in the display windows.

The Colours Colour is the theme for this Spring/Summer 2011 - tangerine corals and zesty oranges adding a youthfulness to even ladylike chic embracing this seasons colour-blocking trend, teaming the oranges with turquoise or flashy pink or a gloss of gold. The colour is fun, vibrant and alive. Blues (Moodboard 951) - intense blues make a splash in this season, with its different shades blistering the runway, team it with black to soften the cerulean or cobalt. Bekita Muwangua Bongiwe Walaza (Guest Designer) This collection “is a fusion, Africa meets the world,” reveals Walaza. Many of the garments were inspired by her childhood experiences of Africa, a diverse country with different traditions. “The pieces are about the theme Portfolio and not in any necessary arrangement, but put together from different collections.”

“My collection is called ‘Treasure Box’ – it’s a subtle, elegant, feminine and very wearable collection. My favourite colours are beige and peach, so I use them a lot. Most of the silhouettes have pleats, gathers and are very loose. I feature an abhaya; as a half Arab, half Namibian I think I first need to understand what I wear before I create other kinds of clothes.” 67

Carla Mallari

“I take my inspiration often from art – I love art. I started out as an artist and saw fashion as a form of art. My collection is kind of wearable art. I have taken my paintings and laminated them onto the garments. I am using unconventional fabrics that I have made myself out of sack! Unfortunately there aren’t too many designers here; otherwise I would be wearing their work. I really want to create wearable art.”

Vanja Smitran “My collection is inspired by the Edwardian era and street-style contemporary. I am inspired by the period movie “Picnic at Hanging Rock” set in the Edwardian era in Australia. It has a lot of great shots of the desert, country and blue skies. I am dyeing silk to make it look like the skies (shows me a silk swatch that looks like lovely blue cloudy skies!)” 68

Esra Sharab

“My collection is inspired by the beautiful ethnic patterns and shapes from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. I saw these really beautiful carved wooden blocks there and have done a similar pattern placement for the garments. They have a simple silhouette, complementing the body; reflecting my take on placing prints in different parts of the garment.”

Dana Elhaj Ahmad

“I like to design both ‘Ready-to-Wear’ and Haute Couture gowns. My aesthetic is basically feminine mixed with a ‘grungy’ rock feel. Suspenders inspire my collection and I am taking it away from casual wear and mixing it with haute couture pieces, nightgowns and dresses. The colour story is Royal Blue, mixed with Champagne and the edginess of Black. The collection features a lot of tulle skirts... volume...embroidery and sequins.”

Hissa Ismail Zainal

“My collection, ‘The Show’, is a funky, colourful and very wearable range inspired by the circus. It features a lot of stripes and polka dots with blocks of colour to break the pattern. It is my first time to do a colourful collection. I love black and white – so I combined the black & white patterns with blocks of colour.”

My muse is a warrior of life – the kind of person who faces challenges and obstacles and I have tried to incorporate that struggle into the collection. The physical inspiration is the sea, which is calm sometimes, and raging at other times. I am using blue and gradients of cream, to resemble the sea.”

Selina Farooqui

“My collection is inspired by the transformation from winter to spring. The colours start off in the pastels range and as the collection continues, the shades get deeper and richer, like flowers coming into bloom. The silhouette has a bit of volume around the body, making it easy to wear, but with the waist defined with handmade belts. It features luxurious French brocades, creamy chiffons, handmade pleats, silk flowers, opaque crystal and matte sequin embellishment.”

Khaltham Daham Al-Kuwari

“My senior collection is based on HH Sheikha Moza – her wardrobe for her diplomatic visit to the Asian countries. The range is conservative, not showing too much skin, not too fitted or too tight, based on our Islamic tradition, but at the same time very trendy and chic which is what I think sums up Sheikha Moza’s style.”

Modawi Mohammed Al Ansari

“My senior collection is more about evening gowns and wedding gowns... most of my fabrics are laces. It’s for a specific category of girls between 20 - 35, very fitted and figure flattering (not revealing), for curvy and conservative women.”

What the stars foretell...

kimora lee simmons may 4 1975 ARIES

Leo

Sagittarius

Aries, leadership abilities will be your forte this month. You’ll be courageous, enthusiastic and ready to get things in motion. But, before you get carried away, realise what it is that you truly want and when is it wise to ask others for help. Have your goals clearly spelled out and go after then tenaciously, or else, you stand to lose an excellent opportunity.

Travel and exploration will be written all over your chart in May. You may decide to work in the international arena, perhaps by opening – or expanding – your business or maybe it’s just time for you to enjoy some quality time with your spouse. Whatever it is, one thing’s for sure – foreign lands beckon, so pack up your bags and get set to explore!

Forget Valentine’s Day! May is the month of love and romance for you. With Uranus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, and the Sun in your house, this month brings love into your life in full force. You’ll be adventuresome, confident, and spunky, enjoying every minute! If a friend had volunteered to make introductions some time ago, it’s time to remind your friend of that offer! Rarely have you ever seen anything like what’s to come!

Taurus This month, will be a good one for you Taurus. All the planets will be cooperating with one another to make all your dreams come true. Of course, you’ll also need to work hard to make things move a bit. But rest assured that all the things that have been put on hold for so long will finally begin to happen. Make the most of it!

Gemini In your career, dear Gemini, there will be plenty of interesting things happening. Neptune, the planet of creativity and imagination, will enter your tenth house of fame and honour and steer you towards success and achievement. There will also be plenty of opportunities to work for charitable causes. This will also be a precursor to meet like-minded people who will hold the keys to much happiness and gratification.

Virgo

Seize the day – or the month, Capricorn! This is what you’ve been waiting for. You have the power to get ahead in whatever it is you wish to accomplish in this lifetime. You will find your willpower and discipline strong. It’s time to grab the opportunities that are presented to you. Take the plunge toward a brighter future and be confident of your success

Libra

Aquarius

As a Libra, you are usually happiest when working in teams. While you’re at it, remember that everyone likes to have a certain measure of control and this might prevent your team from getting the work done on time. But a little charm and wit will help smooth over the bumps and when it’s all over, you will be the star of the show.

You’ve been suffering from a lack of clarity lately, but this will be rectified this month. Expect to be busy with relatives, friends, and your community as well. The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus will energise and stimulate your involvement with family and friends and transform the way you relate to them. An Aquarius New Moon will also serve to bring excitement and anticipation.

Cancer

Scorpio

If you have been looking for new job opportunities or even considering the possibility of switching careers – now is the right time to finally take that leap of faith. The journey won’t be easy and certainly don’t expect things to fall into your lap. But in the end, if you’re assertive enough, you shall succeed. This is also a good time to initiate contact with a potential mentor and get in touch with your inner self.

This month, dear Scorpio, you will be driven up the wall with work and relationships. Your friendships will be strained and you might even engage in an argument. Maybe it is time to reassess what it is that’s making you feel this way. Even if you can’t figure everything out, remember that you have the power to control your happiness. It’s time to set the wheels of change in motion.

Capricorn

If you’re thinking of upping your financial ante this month, it’s time to think about potential investments. Even if you’re a novice in the world of saving, Mars conjunct Jupiter in your house of debt and other people’s money shows that you have the skills, or can easily learn them, so your balance will go up instead of down each month. Your future will thank you.

Pisces All of a sudden this month you will have the urge to improve your finances and make more money. You will put a lot of energy into getting organized, beginning new projects, and being proactive about debt, savings, and investing. A New Moon in Aries will help you take action all month and create opportunities to get on a solid footing.
