Talk Welcome to our biggest issue of GLAM yet! This month, we’ve gone into wedding overdrive with a whole section dedicated to the glamour of the big day. We heed expert advice from Britain’s top wedding planner Sarah Haywood, explore whacky wedding ideas, talk to women about their most memorable wedding moments, showcase top bridal beauty looks and much more! BRICKBATS Hey Glam,

I love it when summer’s back again, and stores are filled with the high-spirited spring/summer collections. The beauty trends section in the April issue was amazing. Smokey eyes are my all time favourite, and I can’t get enough of the red lip trend. The bold eye brows are quite daring, I wonder how it would be walking around town with those eyebrows. Some more beauty trends GLAM, please... Susan Miller

Hi, Thanks for featuring Blake Lively as the fashionista. I have been a great fan of the show Gossip Girl, at times even watching the re-runs. Blake is one true fashionista. She can look great in almost anything. She has a pair of shoes from Christian Louboutin named after her, and she’s dating Ryan Reynolds. One lucky lady! XOXO Amanda Woods

Hello, GLAM is a great fashion magazine to sit back and enjoy reading. It’s a great way to keep up with the latest trends every season. I am glad that spring/summer is back again. I love this season for its vibrancy, the bright hues and fun fabrics. I liked the article titled ‘leather costs the Earth’ in the April issue of the magazine. There were some really handy tips on how to opt for animal-friendly fashion. To be fashionable, one must also remember to be ethical. June Wayn

Hi Glam, I was glad to read about 2012’s love affair with Bombay (now Mumbai) as the city is where I belong. Many designers have been looking to India for inspiration, and when Indian flavours fuse with the brilliance of the West, the result is beautiful. I was surprised to read that designer Karl Lagerfeld has never visited India though his designs for Chanel Pre-fall 2012 had a heavy Indian influence. As he rightly puts it, “Fantasy is often better than reality.” The collection is amazing though! Preeti Gupta

Dear Glam, Your magazine is a perfect mix of glamour, fashion, beauty and health. I have never missed a single issue of GLAM, there are heaps stocked at home. I was glad that you started with the fashion shoots and beauty shoots – they are simply breathtaking! I would love to wear all those gorgeous outfits some day. The concept of ‘sea goddess’ in the April issue was unique and uber-glam. Waiting for the next fashion shoot GLAM. Tulitha Fernando 16 / MAY 2012

Jimmy Choo selects Pruitt for arty collab

Another collaboration between the art and fashion world has been announced, with Jimmy Choo revealing a team-up with contemporary artist Rob Pruitt for a capsule collection of shoes, handbags and leather goods.

After Gaultier for Madonna, Armani unveils wacky Gaga tour creations Lady Gaga and Madonna’s outfits for their respective upcoming tours look set to rival one another in the high fashion stakes, the latter has Jean Paul Gaultier on hand, while Giorgio Armani has just revealed sketches of his creations for Gaga.

On April 19 Armani unveiled a string of predictably wild custom-made outfits for the songstress, including lashings of luminous PVC, a keyboard head piece and, naturally, spiky shoulders. “Collaborating with Lady Gaga is always an exciting experience for me. I admire the way she uses fashion as a scenic element and as a means to build a character,” said Armani, who also created looks for her 2010 Monster Ball tour. While Gaga’s Born This Way Ball kicks off April 27 in Seoul, Korea, Madonna starts the MDNA Tour May 29 in Tel Aviv, Israel. The songstress confirmed that her long-time collaborator Gaultier, who came up with the iconic pieces of her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, is helping out with costumes. “I worship and adore [Jean Paul Gaultier]. He’s creating one of my costumes, and kind of godfathering the costumes for a section of my show, with all my dancers,” the singer recently told WWD. 20 / MAY 2012

Just last month Hermhs announced its latest limited edition scarf collaboration will be with Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, while Christian Dior paired up with German artist Anselm Reyle on a collection of accessories including handbags and shoes last December. Now luxury shoe label Jimmy Choo, which has worked with contemporary artists and photographers including Nan Goldin, Marilyn Minter and Richard Phillips in the past, has announced Pruitt’s line will be part of Choo’s 2013 Cruise collection. “We were captivated by Pruitt’s energy, his computer-screen use of color and the festive exuberance of his prints and materials,” the brand’s creative directors Sandra Choi and Simon Holloway told WWD April 12. “There were elements in his work that reminded us in subtle ways of the Jimmy Choo design iconography. We sensed that Rob’s twist on Jimmy Choo glamour would yield something very collectible and uniquely beautiful.” The products will go on sale at Jimmy Choo boutiques and online as of November. Pruitt is best known for his glittery panda paintings and creating the Guggenheim Art Awards. Last year he unveiled his statue of Andy Warhol in Union Square, New York.

New York Spring 2013 bridal trends: vintage Hollywood, bold colour and cropped tops

With Barcelona Bridal Week kicking off next month, wedding fever is officially in the air and the recent bridal presentations in New York showcased what the most stylish brides will be wearing while walking down the aisle next year -- with influences ranging from classical Spanish to vintage Hollywood. Some of the more contemporary takes on bridal came from the likes of Amsale, who showcased short and flirty hemlines, while Rafael Cennamo referenced the current trend for dropped hems by teaming short skirts with lengthy trains. The catwalk trend for peplums has also translated for wedding gowns, with peplum skirts adding interest at Angel Sanchez and Amsale. Going for a more traditional aesthetic were labels such as Jenny Packham, whose collection was inspired by Hollywood icons such as Vivien Leigh and Bette Davis, and the vintage glamour of 1930s Paris with lashings of silk chiffon, draped satins and French lace. Lace was also big at Romona Keveza, Temperley London and Kenneth Pool, while traditional Spanish-style lace gowns with demure high necks were seen at Oscar de la Renta. The latter also offered a more modern wedding style in the form of cropped tops, floral patterns and shorter skirts. Also earning a prize for innovation was Reem Acra, whose runway finale saw a model remove her tiered tulle skirts to reveal a cropped tube dress. And while in terms of color the usual delicate tones such as ivory, champagne and platinum ruled the runways, designers experimented with less conventional shades. Last year Vera Wang famously showcased gowns in midnight blacks, while for 2013 she presented dresses in scarlet, crimson, vermillion and dahlia. “It’s a celebration of love,” explained the designer. Red frocks appeared on the runways at Romona Keveza and Oscar de la Renta too, while the latter also showcased dresses in cool blues. MAY 2012 / 21

Dirty Denim The fashion folk at Splash have been busy this summer, as the exciting brand introduces the launch of its own denim collection, Splash DNM. The new collection brings a whole range of styles, fits, colours and designs to appeal to a wide audience, and was launched with a campaign aptly titled ‘Get Dirty.’ The campaign was launched across social networking platforms in February. ‘Get Dirty’ was in fact shot in a cement factory in Dubai with an array of models, where three finalists were selected from a whopping 8000 entries received on the brand’s call to be the face. Speaking on the launch of Splash DNM, Raza Beig, CEO Splash & ICONIC, said, “Traditionally denim as a category in Splash was all about brands within Splash and had certain limitations in terms of trends to explore. Given that denim is an iconic, essential part of the modern wardrobe, we decided to tap into this ever growing category by launching a destination that would showcase the newest trends and treatments and would justify the fashion offerings. We developed the range in a way that it would cater to the varied customer of value and fashion shoppers of the brand.”

Get Lippy! Are you a fashionista who always strives to stay one step ahead of trends? If so, we’re pretty certain you’ll have heard of Violent Lips – the must-have temporary lip tattoo craze taking the celebrity world by storm. Hailed as the future of lipstick application, the temporary lip tattoos have already been spotted on the likes of Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga, to name a few. The cool new accessory is the brainchild of ex Pussy Cat Dolls Manager Jeff Haddad, who came up with the idea when he noticed his daughter applying transfer tattoos on to her lips to give her look that extra edge. Violent Lips last up to eight hours, and are available in over 100 colours and patterns including animal prints, polka dots, country flags and a new ‘Glitterati’ collection. The best news is that you can get your paws on them locally from Topshop and Debenhams!

A Fragrant Affair Doha was given an insight into the world of luxury perfume thanks to a Paris Gallery event in Lagoona Mall. The collaboration between Paris Gallery and Clive Christian offered attendees the chance to view Imperial Majesty No1 perfume – one of the most rare and expensive fragrances in the world. Mr. Salman Abul Rahim, General Manager of Paris Gallery, highlighted: “Imperial Majesty No1 perfume is a living example of success and occupies a unique place in the perfumes’ history; this perfume will make a new phase in the perfume field.” Imperial Majesty No1 is one of only 10 bottles created by Clive Christian Perfumes; seven of the bottles have been sold to private perfume connoisseurs for over $300,000; two remain on display in some of the most prestigious perfumeries in the world, while the other is making its rounds across the globe as an exhibition piece. The crystal crafted bottle containing a five carat white diamond nestled in an 18 carat gold collar is the epitome of luxury. The luxury is not just down to the expensive materials, the rare ingredients it homes such as Tahitian Vanilla and 50 year old Indian sandalwood play a huge factor too. The perfume will continue its journey around the world as an exhibition piece offering people a glimpse into the world of the award winning perfume. 24 / MAY 2012

A New Icon Mulberry gets GLAM drooling over its must-have Del Ray bag

After the success of the Alexa family of bags inspired by British queen of style Alexa Chung, we always wondered what celebrity obsession Mulberry would delight us with next. Proving not to disappoint us, the latest offering from the Mulberry stable is no less than the Del Ray bag inspired by American songstress Lana Del Ray – the newest darling to captivate the music and fashion world. On the new bag, Mulberry’s Creative Director Emma Hill highlighted to GLAM: “After falling in love with her videos, her style and her lovely voice we found we had a total girl crush on Lana Del Rey! We wanted to design a gorgeous bag that reflected her style and beauty so we thought the bag should be simple and structured yet relevant for now and recognisable instantly as a classic Mulberry piece.” It seems to have gone down quite the treat, especially with the American singing sensation Lana Del Ray who shared: ‘’I love the design, a perfect mix between old school Hollywood and contemporary style. It’s an honour that such a classic and prestigious brand would name a bag after me.”

The Del Ray is available in a selection of covetable colours including Deer Brown Grainy Print, Black Forest Soft Matte, Black Soft Spongy and Petrol Veg Tanned Lambskin leathers as part of the Autumn Winter 2012 Main Collection.

A dream Wedding By Shalinee Bhardwaj

Marriages are made in heaven but weddings are surely celebrated in this material world! While the bride and the groom are ecstatic in their virtual cloud nine, arranging a dream like memorable wedding event depends on a lot of ‘worldly factors’! In an era where economies shake at the click of a button, it’s not surprising when we demand the most and the best in minimals, and so is the case with weddings. Glam explores great offers and astounding wedding packages from some of the elitist addresses in town.

Popular & Whacky Wedding Destinations When it comes to organising the one event that is supposed to celebrate the union of a lifetime, it is only natural that you want it to be unique. While traditions and cultures may dictate customary celebrations, more and more couples are embracing a new wave of unconventional weddings, from gorgeous destination weddings to down-right wacky dos at fast food joints. Whatever your preference may be, GLAM brings you some of the most interesting concepts that you may want to consider when you say ‘I Do’. By DEBRINA ALIYAH

72 / MAY 2012

GLAM Pristine beaches, beautiful sunsets and gorgeous blue skies sound like the perfect setting for a honeymoon, and these days, it is the perfect backdrop for your wedding too! Why jet off to another getaway when you can get married and honeymoon at the same location? Beach weddings have become a highly popular choice for couples tying the knot as it provides a relaxed and intimate ambiance. Often, guests can dress down and opt for a resort chic wardrobe while enjoying the perfect romantic setting designed by mother nature. Popular destinations for beach weddings include Maldives and Bali where many of the resorts provide wedding packages. Resorts like the Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru has wedding planning services to tailor ceremonies exactly to your needs and often include special rates for your wedding party guests.

Another novel destination that has recently come into the limelight is the vineyard wedding, where you can celebrate your union at one of the many French chateaus. A gorgeous estate, majestic mansion and an everexpanding landscape gives a touch of grandeur to your event. If you are a fan of period dramas or a purveyor of fine living and wines, the vineyard wedding may be just up your alley as you get to live out your special day just like the nobles and aristocrats of the heydays. The chateaus in the South of France are extremely sought-after venues for their reputation in wine-making, as couples choose to tie the knot in the vineyard producing their favourite wines.

BRIDES

For a touch of mystic and exoticism, you can consider destinations like Jaipur for its rich cultural history and traditions which you can incorporate into your celebrations. Imagine arriving at your wedding on an elephant and immersing yourself in the rich colours and tastes of the region to give the occasion an extra special touch. MAY 2012 / 73

The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden even has an ice chapel where you can get married in an all-ice environment just like an igloo. The ice chapel wedding includes a reindeer sleigh ride and a wedding night on bedding made out of reindeer skin.

Swedish diving instructor Richard Pahlsson met his Japanese wife Yu Saito in Bali during a trekking expedition and decided to tie the knot at a waterfalls in the Indonesian jungle where they first spoke to each other. Their guests had to trek together with the couple to the waterfalls where they had a picnic lunch after the vows were exchanged.

Whacky IDEAS

Fancy tying the knot at any altitude of your choice? Try a hot air balloon ride where you can exchange your vows in the privacy of a gondola. Hot air balloons can fly up to very high levels enabling you to admire the scenic view of your choice right after saying ‘I Do’. In Dallas, Texas, one hot air balloon company offers the service of a pilot who is also an ordained minister to officiate your marriage mid-air. 74 / MAY 2012

Another exhilarating option is a ski wedding, where you can launch off your ‘First Ski’ (together as a married couple) the moment after you exchange your vows at the top of the slope.

GLAM

If you are really up for some adrenaline pumping action, you can exchange vows underwater in a shark tank, surrounded by the world’s most dangerous aquatic creatures. American couple April Pignataro and Michael Curry got married in 2010 in a shark tank at the Atlantis Marine World in New York where they exchanged vows into Xa radio headgear transmitted to a minister outside the tank. In August 2011, couple Eva and Pavel Jaworzno donned their diving gear and exchanged their vows underwater along with their 275 wedding guests setting the new world record for the largest underwater wedding.

BRIDES

In Hong Kong, where getting married can be a costly affair, McDonalds have come up with the novel idea where couples can get hitched at the fast-food outlet at an affordable price. Instead of an all-out 10-course Chinese dinner with shark fins soups and abalone, guests toast the married couple with super-size drinks and French fries dipped in ketchup. Much alike kid’s birthdays celebrated at fast-food joints, McDonalds offer special packages for couples and their guests to say ‘I Do’ under their signature Golden Arches. But Hong Kong-ers aren’t the only one who are getting into the fast-food joint wedding cult in Jan 2009, American couple Paul and Caragh Brooks got hitched at an Illinois Taco Bell restaurant and British couple Gareth and Kalli Pritchard got married in a local KFC restaurant in February 2011. Even Dunkin Donuts has jumped on the bandwagon offering wedding packages with a special wedding cake made out of a pile of donuts.

For couples who are united via a mutual interest or cult craze, often they would adopt a wedding ceremony that revolves around the subject. Many Star Trek fans, or better known as Trekkies, have exchanged vows in the famous Star Trek Chapel in Las Vegas that is modeled after the show’s famous ship, the Enterprise. Others fashion their wedding themes according to their interest, including a Tolkien world wedding, roller rinks weddings, and even zombie weddings. So before you go about planning your big day, perhaps you can take a pointer or two from the range of unique and unconventional ideas to make your wedding a truly memorable one. MAY 2012 / 75

accused Brown of assault. Its been three years now and looks like Rihanna has buried the past, shocking fans when she reunited with Brown for two musical collaborations (Birthday Cake and Turn Up the Music) to which she explained that he was the hottest R&B artist at the moment. It’s all for music she claims. Her former flames also include Canadian Rapper Drake, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, Cruel Intentions star Ryan Philippe and We Found Love video co-star Dudley O’Shaughnessy. The latest on the list was supposedly Ashton Kutcher, but the singer has vehemently denied all such rumours. As of now, the singer admits to being ‘single and happy’ although she hasn’t given up hopes of finding the right man. We’ve heard she developed crushes on both her Battleship co-stars Liam Neeson and Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard, and was seen flirting with rapper A$AP Rocky at the Coachella Festival... Good girl gone bad... With an overwhelming rise to stardom, Rihanna’s fashion statement too evolved from a cute teenage singing sensation to a sexy, glamorous rockstar. She’s swiftly moved from baggy denims that she once sported on the red carpets to more figure-accentuating stylish dresses and gowns that she cleverly pairs with bold yet minimalistic accessories, and a fabulous, sometimes wacky, hair-do. She’s also obsessed with tattoos: there’s a ‘small cross’ on her collarbone, a ‘shh’ on her index finger, a ‘thug life’ on her knuckles, a ‘star’ on the left ear, and so on, etched from head to toe. An album that aptly announced her transformationwe love how this good girl’s gone bad! MAY 2012 / 81

Lovely Locks...

Not everyone can pull off those bangs the way Rihanna does. She hasn’t shied away from the scissors as evident with the number of hairstyles that she has donned over the years – from long to bob, poker straight to curly, black to red to blonde, mohawk to fringe – she has flaunted it all. We give a thumbs-up for each! At present, the singer looks smouldering hot in her brandnew blonde fringed look.

The first Vintage Boutique opens shop Qatar has waited a long time to have its own vintage boutique, but thanks to vintage lover and antiques collector Huda Al Naemi, it now has one of its own By Yousra Samir

omen in Qatar have always been lovers of vintage - as girls and young women they would go on scavenger hunts through wardrobes, jewellery boxes and shoe collections of their

ancestors, borrowing pieces from the 70s and 80s, purchased on travels to glamorous places like London, Paris and Vienna. However, until recently, there was nowhere to get your vintage fix. Hence imagine the joy and relief to discover that finally the country has its very first vintage store, Vintage Boutique. Located on the second floor of the Link Renaissance Hotel, Vintage Boutique is the baby of Qatari vintage addict and antiques collector Huda Al Naemi. Huda, who is married with three children and has a Master’s degree in Computer Networking from Southbank University in London and had been contemplating the idea of opening her very own vintage boutique for years. With her expanding collection of vintage clothes, bags and accessories and lack of space to keep collecting more, she decided to open a boutique here. “Buying vintage items is definitely very trendy at the moment,” Huda says, “I think the trend of wearing vintage started in the West and thanks to globalisation, it has become very popular here too.” 84 / MAY 2012

Elizabeth (Yang Soon Ju)

studied art history and that has been the inspiring factor in her designs. “I never imagined the power to translate inspiration to design could be so great!,” she says. Her collection “Doha Baroque”, was inspired by the shapes of skyscrapers in Doha. The modern revision of traditional Islamic motifs on Jean Nouvel’s skycraper and the steel frame of the Tornado Tower and the dynamic Zigzag towers in Doha all held elements that helped fashion her creations. Tornado’s corset-like silhouette and diamond shapes are interpreted as an element in her fabric choices. Nouvel’s Islamic motifs inspired the surface embellishment.

collection reflects her experiences in different countries. ‘Diptera’ is a Greek term used to scientifically classify flies. “My challenge was to use and work around this word, create garments that people would love to wear inspired by a creature that they would normally find repulsive,” she says. She has used the fly as a decorative element with laser cuts and also shaped the fabric like the fly’s wings. She hopes to continue to explore the juxtaposition of repulsiveness and elegance in design.

Sara Al-Thani

loves painting and she even writes poetry. She will be completing her second degree, the first one being in political science. But her dream was always to create her own range of clothing. “If I don’t find something I want to buy, I create it!” This year her collection is entitled “To Catch a Thief”, after Alfred Hitchcock’s movie” and she is inspired by the glamour of the 50s and of Grace Kelly .She has used satin florals and 3-d fabrics. Each dress represents a scene from the movie. She will be creating her own line in Los Angles soon.

MAY 2012 / 93

The Junior collection The Juniors proved to be promising too.

Oulla Al-Samarrae

from Iraq, grew up in new Zealand and always wanted to be in fashion. Street-style is the inspiration for her collection. Simple silhouettes with an edgy feel, seems to be her style line and she has used her favourite colours – beige, purple, grey and salmon. Her favourite piece is the grey dress with the purple trim. “ I am already excited about my senior collection and waiting to get to senior year!” She won the Best Junior Collection Award from the jury.

Sultana Jesmine,

the diminutive double major student from Bangladesh, originally wanted to be a doctor! “I love fashion because it allows me to work with my hands more than Interior Design,” she tells us. She tried to combine her inspiration for office wear with a sportswear look -” I wanted to preserve the elegance of office wear even while working within the boundaries of sportswear”. She loves the classy designs, the femininity and elegance of Valentino’s designs.

Rabab Abdulla,

a double major in interiors and fashion, has grown up in Doha always wanting to study at VCUQ! She designed a kids wear collection with a theme of smileys and won the Most Outstanding Double Major award. Her favourite designers are Manish Malhotra and Manish Arora.

I use vibrant colours and have experimented with patterns for the first time.” She is looking forward to her last year in university and is inspired by Ralph Rucci and hopes to intern with him.

Basra Khalid Bashir, prefers geometric shapes than flowing ones. Her collection is for winter, using the trendy colour orange, fur and heavy fabrics. She wanted to create a contemporary look with the shapes and silhouettes. “I found out how hard it was to work with some of these fabrics,” she says. The eatery is set to become a favourite among Doha’s food junkies seeking a trendy retreat. Japanese Chef de Cuisine Toshikazu Kato leads a multicultural team presenting a selection of authentic pan-Asian dishes. Guests certainly won’t be disappointed with theatrical cooking techniques designed to enhance guest engagement, including a sushi bar, tandoor ovens, satay grill, tawa griddle, dumpling steamers and much more. The glamorous interiors, designed by Henry Chebaane and his London-based team, combine exotic leathers with cool turquoise fabric, brought to life with dramatic touches of textured coconut timber, shimmering black pearls, sea blue glass and polished steel. GLAM especially loves the covered outdoor patio area, which features an art instillation, live fire place and array of tropical plants; and the soothing beats from the soundtrack prove to be just the trick to transport you to Asian shores. world-famous chef, Pascal Fayet – the creative mind behind Sormani. Chef Pascal’s passion for authentic Italian food stems from his childhood, when he would diligently watch his grandmother toil in the kitchen to cook up a feast of lip-smacking Italian goodies. Having inculcated some invaluable kitchen lessons from his grandmother, Chef Pascal went on to learn the finer nuances of Italian cuisine, from the little opportunities that came up. Through the Sormani chain of restaurants, Chef Pascal shares this rich Italian flavours with gourmets all over the world – the latest addition to the chain being Qatar. “Qataris are the Italians of the Middle East,” says the chef. “They are as family-oriented as the Italians. Also, Qataris are connoisseurs of good taste. They love something unique, something exceptional.” In fact back in Paris, Sormani also sees a regular stream of guests from

Qatar who come to savour the Italian delicacies served there. One such guest Chef Pascal points out is Nabeel Ali bin Ali, Vice Chairman of the Ali Bin Ali Group. “Nabeel is a czar of Italian cuisine. He’s someone who understands the intricacies of authentic Italian cuisine. I have great respect for him; he’s classy, a perfectionist and a visionary. He likes to please everyone, he’s a true professional.” Filled with great admiration for the man who loves Italian food, Chef Pascal willingly accepted Nabeel’s invitation to expand the Sormani brand in Qatar. “Like Nabeel, we at Sormani also place service before money. What we really care about is quality, service and customer satisfaction. “People in Qatar will be treated to the same excellent food and service that we are known for in Paris.” And for this, the chef has already charted out a spectacular menu of mouth-watering dishes that include the famous Carpaccio, lasagne, ravioli, risotto and a variety of fresh seafood, each prepared with the

very best of ingredients – from the white truffles of Alba and Bugata Mozzarella, to Italy’s best Bresaola and risotto con fageoli with sausage from Naples. The restaurant’s specialty, however, is the white and black truffles. “Truffles are magical. The smell is like an extra-ordinary perfume. One kilo of black truffle would cost Euro 1000 , while the white is Euro 2000 . I call them black and white gold.” A world of creativity “At Sormani, we keep inventing and re-inventing,” says the chef. “We offer a new menu every season, but what is consistent is quality. We ensure we do it right each time.”

“What I love most about my job is that I meet so many different people. I want to make all of them happy with my food.”

The secret to flavoursome inventive cuisine that Sormani offers is ‘imagination’ for which Chef Pascal personally visits markets to seek. “Like when a mother goes to the market and sees vegetables, she immediately knows what dish to prepare for her children. It’s the colours and smell of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat in the market that inspires me to create a new dish.” His creativity is not secluded to the kitchen though. Chef Pascal is also an enthusiastic artist. He’s been working on a few paintings that will soon adorn the walls of the restaurant in Qatar. Similar paintings greet customers back in Paris. “I love playing with colours,” says the chef. “I get inspired by the mountains, the forests, and the landscape.” It’s the same explosion of ideas that the chef adapts to his style of cooking. “It’s important to know the preferences of my guests. When I talk to them, I create in my head a piece of art. Just tell me what you like, and I will prepare something magical from it.” For the chef, cooking is not a job but a lifestyle. “It’s like listening to some pleasant music,” he says. “What I love most about my job is that I meet so many different people. I want to make all of them happy with my food.” So the next time, you feel like indulging in a distinctive new Italian dining experience, you already know where to head. As Chef Pascal promises, “When you are at Sormani, you just have to dream about good food. And I’m here to make your dreams come true.” MAY 2012 / 105
