The arrival of mega celebrities for the highly anticipated DTFF and the WTA championships guaranteed the nightlife hotspots would be buzzing with the fash pack and elite of the movie world. So, in this issue, there’s nothing better than juicy stories of some of the most super gorgeous and talented people around; all delivered to you in a new hip design style of our magazine.

We give you an exclusive interview with Miss USA 2010, Rima Fakih, who visited Doha for a quick visit on the first leg of her Middle-Eastern tour. She shares the story of her fabulous journey so far, lifting the lid on her love-life and sharing some top-tips on how to maintain a svelte figure.

Remember Baywatch, that American show we all adored with its never ending cast of beautiful, toned lifeguard beauties? Well, we caught up with Jeremy Jackson, the ambassador of ultra trendy brand Ed Hardy, to talk about life, fame and much more.

Gossip and Glamour GLAM lives up to its name of being one of the most glamorous magazines I have come across. The star buzz section is interesting and fun to read. However, the October issue didn’t carry any fashion or style tips. It would be nice to read something on the do’s and don’ts of fashion. I hope to see it in the next issue. But overall, GLAM is a terrific fashion magazine.

A model’s tale I have always believed that a supermodel’s life is all about glamour, parties and fun. But, with GLAM, I have realised that even models lead a very normal life. They are only portrayed as people with a lavish lifestyle and carefree attitude; in reality the modelling profession as its own share of hardships. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article on Daria Werbowy - her journey from being a normal teenager to a household name!

A treat of three I am a great fan of Jonas brothers, and I would like to thank GLAM for featuring them as ‘Eye Candy’ for the October issue. Princess wears Prada Anne Hathaway has been in the list of my favourite actresses ever since I have watched Princess Diaries. And to see her featured in your magazine was a treat. She’s a natural in terms of acting and can pull of any role with ease. I especially loved her in ‘The Devil wears Prada’.

Even the article on Argentina was good. It gave me enough reasons to go and visit the country. I would really like if you have an article on travel in every issue.

W Hotel hosts Kate Moss Complementing its fashionable and chic surroundings, the W hotel was host to a special guest last week in the form of British supermodel Kate Moss. The international style icon had a one night stopover in the prestigious hotel before continuing on her journey to the Maldives.

er designs epitomise glamour and sophistication with luxury. Reem Acra has an understanding of what women would look good in.

Her grandmother who was skilled in making handmade silk flowers introduced her to the world of fashion at an early age. Her father brought water purification to the people of Beirut during the terrible war and her mother passed on her love for textile and design. Her mother had her own seamstress and took Reem to the bazaars to buy fabric. Reem picked a vintage dress from a Bedouin herder whom she met with her mother, when young. This was the start for her love affair with intricate embroidery and beading.

She studied design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and at the Esmod Ecole de Mode in Paris. Reem Acra began her career as an embroidery artist in New York and Reem Acra Bridal, her wedding gowns label was born when her friend wore her first wedding dress design to a society wedding and it sparked international interest in her work.

GLAM had a chance to talk with the designer in the beautiful setting of the Sukar Pasha restaurant at Katara during DTFF. Reem Acra is soft spoken yet comes through as a warm and powerful woman with a love for fashion and all things beautiful around.

How did it all start for you?

The first fashion show in Lebanon when I was

Reem Acra will be opening her first franchise boutique in the country of her birth- Lebanon, Beirut in early November. She is recognised for her signature use of embroidery creating delicate beadwork and tiny Swarovski crystals and seed pearls. She creates intricate gold bullion and shadow embroidery for her classic traditional bridal dresses.

For her Fall 2011 bridal show, she designed a wedding dress reminiscent of Hollywood glamour and paired it with bunny ears! She said that it was meant to add some levity to a stressful day and that brides can have fun too.

From Lebanon to New York City, dressing Hollywood stars and the American Vice President’s wife, Jill Biden, on inauguration night Reem Acra’s is the quintessential American story.

What inspires you? Who inspires you?

My travels, every country, all the people, on the streets of England, Paris...furniture, wallpaper, ceilings... it’s a blessing- to look at things and be inspired. People and objects inspire me. That’s why I feel free – I am not stuck with a personality for inspiration and limited by that.

A combination of countries inspire me - I love, love, love the East! It’s always full of surprises and elements, details - I am a detailed person. Sitting here in the restaurant, I see so many things and am amazed, as I love it all! I love embellishment so definitely the East is an inspiration for me.

Who is the woman you design for?

The woman I design for is very intellectual, welltravelled, well read, loves to travel to different places, is sophisticated and likes to look glamorous.

How would you describe your association with Hollywood and it’s celebrities

Reem Acra has dressed numerous Hollywood celebrities- for the Red Carpet and for other occasions- like Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Eva Longoria, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry, to name a few.

I understand fit and construction, glamour and a certain simplicity that is required to dress Hollywood actresses. I make the dresses for the red carpet similar to the glamour of old Hollywood,

Would you design for films?

It’s all about opportunities – if the opportunity comes- why not! I designed gloves for the Titanic a long time ago! I am even mentioned in episodes of TV shows - Gossip Girls and Ugly Betty!

Have you designed for any Bollywood celebrity?

How would you dress Aishwarya Rai? No. I would love to! I think there is so much glamour there and I would like to understand the characters. I love the music and love to dance to it!

Reem is said to have a love of dancing - especially the salsa. I believe Aishwarya Rai is a sexy bombshell and I would dress her in something that portrays her international appeal - like the Hollywood stars on the Red Carpet.

What would you advise the women of Qatar on fashion?

I love love love Qatari women! To me they are pure, loving, adorable, and portray kindness from inside. I see them as sweet women who have a lot of glamour inside, but didn’t expose it yet. They are ready for it though. I can’t wait to be a part of their glamour being exposed, for it to explode!

Will we then see more of Reem Acra in Doha?

I love Doha and it’s opening up to culture worldwide and I cannot see myself not coming here more often. I love Doha and the country.

How would you say your fashion sense/ style has evolved from when you designed that dress made from your mother’s tablecloth?

All of us evolve of course, but when I saw my old slides yesterday (shown at TEDX Doha) – I realised that the dresses looked exactly as the ones I design today! They could be on the Red Carpet even today.

In the beginning of my career when I hadn’t even studied fashion- there was something there. It’s been there from the beginning and it’s been the same. I look at the dress I wore when I was 7 years old and I would have designed the same, even today. Its inside me and I am born with it.

“I haven’t been your average Miss USA; besides the fact that I’m travelling internationally, I’m the first ArabAmerican to hold the title, possibly the first Muslim. Because of this, I have so many different eyes focusing on me and looking up to me; it’s something I take very seriously,” she says.

The leggy Lebanese born stunner looks every inch the beauty queen with her long glistening jet-black hair, enviable hour-glass figure and pearl white teeth; and topping it off she’s uber fashionable wearing a chic cropped Armani jacket. It is clear the coveted crown hasn’t gone to her head as she happily obliges to pose for waiting photographers.

Twenty-five-year-old Fakih has just launched her Middle-Eastern tour with Qatar being the first stop on her busy schedule, “I was invited here for the Made in USA expo and Salam Stores sponsored the whole trip, which I’m very happy about,” she beams proudly; despite already posing for a photo shoot and conducting three media interviews her face animates with every word she shares, her smile never fading.

The most intense aspect of Fakih’s reign has been a result of her background, “I haven’t been your average Miss USA; besides the fact that I’m travelling internationally, I’m the first Arab-American to hold the title, possibly the first Muslim. Because of this, I have so many different eyes focusing on me and looking up to me; it’s something I take very seriously,” she says.

Now her ambition is to hone in on her acting skills and cement her status as a world class actor; looks like she is set for success as she has just completed a movie with Australian heart-throb Hugh Jackman, wow! questions surrounding her Arab roots. When she’s quizzed on certain issues, she places emphasis on removing the virus from whatever question is directed at her. “I would like to let everyone know that there is actually nothing negative about what I’m doing. I never try and force people to change their opinion of me; instead I try and give them a better understanding. I think all too often people judge a book by its cover and it’s something that you should never do,” she shares.

Unlike most beauty pageant queens who spend years training and battling in cut-throat contests in hope of one day winning the most sought after crown in America; Fakih seems to have been the dark horse skipping most of the bitchy competitions. “This is all new to me, I used to be a tomboy growing up, the whole regime of putting on make-up and glamming up is only something I have got good at last year,” she reveals.

Both her parents hail from Southern Lebanon so it’s easy to comprehend where she inherits her style, as the country is quickly becoming the fashion capital of the Middle-East. Her family moved to America when she was three-yearsold and spent most of their life in New York before moving to Michigan in 2003.

The reality of being so far away from those she loves is heightened as she recalls her family life; overtaken by a sudden wave of emotion, the interview is briefly stopped as Fakhi’s eyes wellup at the thought of her 16-year-old brother. “I just miss spending time with him so much.”

Ready for the silver screen Before the whirlwind journey of competing in Miss USA and again in Miss Universe, Fakih was like any other young girl, working hard at three jobs to make a living. Not just a

pretty face, she also has degrees in Business and Economics which she gained from the University of Michigan. Now her ambition is to hone in on her acting skills and cement her status as a world class actor; looks like she is set for success as she has just completed a movie with Australian heart-throb Hugh Jackman, wow!

Not only does she count mouth-watering Jackman as a colleague, she exclusively reveals that she’s currently dating baseball player Ricky Romero from the The Toronto Blue Jays. “I can’t believe I just told you that; I’ve been single and independent all my life, Ricky and I have been friends for a while and things just blossomed; we’re really serious about each other.”

Style icons The lucky lady has been a guest at numerous fashion shows during New York fashion week; yet sticking true to her roots, she beholds Lebanese extravaganza fashion designer Elie Saab as one of her favourite as well as Chanel.

“During NY fashion week, I got to model in a private show for Loris Diran; he asked me to wear one of his outfits as the theme for his new line is called The Middle East-The desert, it was amazing, there was Arabic music playing and everyone was having so much fun.”

The ambitious lady counts Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian as her style icons; “Angelina Jolie’s style is simple yet unique, she’s so elegant and also sexy. I admire her because she’s a mum, a UN ambassador and a great actress,” she shares passionately.

No pain, no gain?

With an envious figure and legs that go on forever, GLAM was keen to know the secrets behind Fakih’s svelte shape. “A lot of people

think that losing weight or looking thin means that you don’t eat, that is completely untrue. I make sure I eat five times a day and never eat after 7pm. I choose carbohydrates carefully, usually brown rice or sweet potatoes,” she shares.

Her schedule is often so demanding that she has little time to complete the desired workout she envisages; instead she makes sure that she works out at least three times a week with a mixture of both cardio and weight training. However, like us all, Fakih has a downfall in the form of ice-cream.

“I just can’t give it up,” she enthuses.

With plastic surgery becoming an increasing problem in the region, Fakih insists that she is all about natural beauty and doesn’t agree with the extreme measures some girls go through to achieve the look they want. “I’m not completely against plastic surgery; however, I don’t agree with girls who get carried away with it - if you are unhappy with something, fair enough, change it but don’t continue changing other things.

I would really advise girls not to do anything until after the age of 25 because our bodies are constantly changing even at that age.”

Miss USA 2010 has successfully managed to storm her way to the top in the toughest competition in America, has a dream beau, has collaborated with the fashion elite and mingled with the big-timers of the movie world; so, what advice can she provide to all young hopefuls?

“You can’t be a model, actress or Miss USA unless you are proud, confident and love yourself. You need a positive mentality and the ability to look in the mirror and tell yourself you are strong, smart and sexy. ho or what is a Vanessa Hudgens? If you’re asking that question, chances are you’ve lived under a rock for the last half decade.

Like Hello? High School Musical? This young elfish beauty is the latest young star well on her way to becoming a super singing and acting sensation.

Hudgens was born in California on December 14, 1988 and grew up all over the West Coast.

Her exotic good looks are courtesy of parents Gregory and Gina Hudgens. From her father’s side, Hudgen’s inherited Irish and Native American good looks. Her mother, Gina, is of Chinese, Filipino and Spanish descent; doubtless, Hudgens inherited her ‘dark, smoky, Goddess’ look from that side of the family! Hudgens started singing and acting in school plays when she was just eight years old. Her commercial career only began though, when she auditioned for a commercial and, wonder of wonders got the part! Subsequently, her whole family relocated to Los Angeles. Indeed, even today, Hudgens insists that she wouldn’t be able to do anything without the support of her family. Her mother especially is a key part of her support system; according to Hudgens “She [her mother] gave up so much for me. She moved many times so I could follow my career.”

Her career really took off in 2003 when she starred in independent film Thirteen. Though she played a very minor role, the film’s critical success garnered her role in 2004’s Thunderbird’s, which was, unfortunately for Hudgens, a box office flop. Still, the young actress didn’t let that hold her

back, and appeared in several TV shows, such as Quintuplets, Still Standing, The Brothers Garcia and the Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

Late 2005 though, saw Hudgens get her BIG break in the form of High School Musical.

Starring alongside young Zac Efron, Vanessa was cast as the lead in the movie and after its release the movie proceeded to drive kids (and some adults over the world) completely wild. Hudgen’s who played meek yet beautiful Gabriella, Zac’s love interest, instantly became every young boy’s newest crush. Hudgen’s chemistry with co-star Zac Efron was undeniable.

Even to herself. She explained later, “The second I met Zac, I thought he was a really cool guy. It’s hard not to have chemistry with someone who is so attractive”.

Millions of girls whole heartedly agreed.

In 2006, Hudgen’s released her debut album, V. The album reached number 24 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold in early 2007. Vanessa, whose first love had always been movies – “my passion is doing movies, and as long as I keep doing that, I’ll be happy. I want to do movies, fun roles and dramatic ones. I love all of it” – found music scarier, “When you’re acting, you’re a character and you can hide behind that. Music is who you are right then and there--you can’t hide.”

Continuing in the singing vein, Hudgens participated in High School Musical: The Concert Tour in 2006. The tour was wildly successful albeit a little tiring. Says Hudgens, “touring is tough. You’re almost in a haze because you don’t really know where you are half the time: You’re

The end of her tour saw her reprise her role as Gabriella in High School Musical 2 in 2007, and later in High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008. Her second album also came out during that year. For her role in the High School movies, Hudgens has won numerous awards including but not limited to a Teen Choice Award, MTV Move Award, Kids Choice Award, Young Artist Award and an Imogen Foundation Award. In December 2008, she was ranked number twenty on Forbes ‘Highest Earners Under 30’ list. She was number 62 on FHM’s Sexiest Women of the World list in 2008 and jumped 20 places ahead to number 42 in 2009. She has also been included in People’s Annual ‘100 Most Beautiful People Lists’.

So what makes this girl tick? She’s a genuine all round nice girl for one. Hudgen’s insists that she’s good friends with the entire cast of High School Musical, and her on screen nemesis, Ashley Tisdale, is actually her real life best friend. Hudgen’s explains, “It’s hard to find people you are very close to and can relate

to, but with this movie we really did bond.

I felt very blessed for that”. Her nice girl persona only becomes stronger when she admits to crying over Disney movies, “The Lion King always makes me cry, especially when Simba’s father gets trampled.”

Hudgen’s always glams it up at the red carpet, but insists that she’s a fan of the funk! Says Hudgens, “I love funky styles.

Not preppy or rock, just funky!” According to her she’s ‘known’ because of her scent, (girls take note!) Pink Sugar and is one of the biggest fans of... wait for it... lip gloss!

Yep, Hudgen’s admits that she’s a sucker (pun intended) for lippy, “Lip gloss is my calling!”

But perhaps, one of the most wackiest things she’s ever admitted to is having a poster of current boyfriend Zac Efron, up on her wall, “...I have a poster of Zac Efron on my wall! I think every girl has a poster of him in their room so, why not join the club!”

sabelle La Bruyère, Director, Middle East, and Lyne Kaddoura, Jewellery Specialist, Christie’s Dubai, made their mark in Qatar, with the Fabulous Parures – an important private collection and international modern and contemporary art jewellery and art exhibits held at the Four Seasons Hotel, Doha.

From emerald studded necklaces to 20th century Egyptian paintings from the collection of Dr. Mohammed Says Farsi, former Mayor of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, La Bruyère and Kaddoura exposed some extraordinary collections, as a preview to the auction on October 26 in Dubai, to art lovers in Doha.

When it comes to high-end designer pieces the brand image established by the jewellery house and designers speaks for itself. That, however, cannot be the case with everything, such as the private collection that was auctioned by Christie’s in Dubai. Then what is it that draws in collectors who invest thousands of dollars in the jewels?

“Quality and provenance, is what attracts great collectors out there,” says La Bruyère.

“With art and jewellery, you look at the artist, how much of a following does he have? Is he in demand? How many shows has he had behind him? How prolific he is? How good the piece is, is it in good condition, is it a piece from an important

moment or series, is it fresh to the market or has it been on the market for a long time? All these are important questions one needs to ask, and should never be afraid to ask,” she says.

As far as collectors are concerned, Kaddoura adds, there is an assessed need for jewellery specialists to advise and guide clients so that they are able to make informed choices when purchasing jewellery.

“My first and foremost job is to give unbiased advice to my clients – the vendors and sellers. We never own the pieces, we are basically brokers between two people,” says Kaddoura.

Then we promote our sales, hold exhibitions like this one in Doha. We know our collectors very well, so we know which pieces are best suited for their collections. Then we give a reasonable estimate of how much to pay for a particular piece,” she says.

According to La Bruyère, great collections take time to build, as they are usually born out of patience and careful selection.

“Don’t rush. Buy with your heart, then with your head,” she advises new collectors. “Art is something very personal that you live with. Moreover, buy the best of what you can afford, because quality and state are very important. Try and see as much as possible, the good and the bad, ask questions, teach yourself. Experts in this field love to share their knowledge,” she says.

As they evaluate the past and present, the women find themselves mesmerised by the concepts that emerge from the Middle Eastern talent mine.

“We were the first international auction house to open in the GCC and have sold over 1,000 works

Committed to promoting Middle Eastern art on an international platform, La Bruyère and Kaddoura believe that the strategy the promotional strategies

they employed with artists can also be applied to jewellery designers.

“In our catalogues here, we devote an entire section to Middle Eastern designers, showcasing their designs for the first time on an international platform. We have done this previously with art, by displaying the art work of Middle Eastern artists in our catalogues and sales. We are now adopting the same approach with jewellery,” she explains.

The dazzling suites which have been brought to Doha, include entire parures, or sets of matching jewellery, by contemporary Middle Eastern designers like Elie Chatila and Pascal Mouawad.

“My personal favourite from this collection is this sapphire and diamond bracelet by Mouawad,” says Kaddoura, pointing to a white gold bracelet mounted with a sugarloaf cabochon sapphire weighing 180.86 carats, set within an emerald-cut diamond demi-surround to the tapered lattice-work band composed of a series of vari-cut diamonds and circular-shaped cabochon sapphires.

Showcasing its art and jewellery collections in Doha echoes Christie’s desire to strengthen its presence in the Middle East by extracting and exposing quality art from within the region.

“Dubai is a part of Christie’s investment in the Middle East. It is really part of implementing Christie’s in this region and showing to the region that we are not here to come, have an auction, pack up and go. Created and designed by the world’s top jewellery houses, such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, the 20 pieces are returning to the market after 23 years in a private collection. Baywatch stint The catapulted Jeremy to fame, and so the show is close to the actor’s heart. At just 10 years of age, Jeremy joined the cast and became an adorable character in the show’s riveting story line. Offscreen too, he had several amazing moments on the set, which he recollects avidly, especially his birthday (October 16) which always fell during the summers when they were still filming, and Jeremy would make a great deal about it.

Jeremy also recollects his mother reading him the scripts, since he is dyslexic and found it difficult to do so by himself. “My mom had to read my lines and I had to listen to them and memorise them.”

Though dyslexia hampered Jeremy’s education, the disorder couldn’t do much to retain the young and enthusiastic Jeremy from bouncing back. “At that time, the American school systems didn’t cater much to learning disabilities. I didn’t do well in a normal school, I was the class clown.”

GLAM feels Jeremy. “Since I started acting at an early age, I got a chance to travel the world. And that has been an education in itself.” Moreover, the actor had private teachers on the sets, indulged in independent studying and with this the disorder was gradually rectified.

But the budding star’s growing years were embroiled in a lot of controversies. He faced drug charges and was sent to rehabilitation. “While growing through my teen years, I made a lot of mistakes - party, drugs, losing sight of what is important like family, friends, etc. It was all about fun,” says a much sober Jeremy. “Everybody, my mom, my uncle, my grandma told me that I would land in trouble if I went about like this. But it’s tough when you are young; you think people are holding you back from something fun. Had I listened to them, I would have been a lot different today.”

Everyone learns through their own mistakes, and who knows this better than Jeremy himself. “Luckily I had people around me who loved me, and I realised I was hurting them. That kept me grounded. Now I spend my time with young guys encouraging them to get away from drugs or alcohol.”

Ask the actor the reason behind addiction, and he promptly replies, “Basically, it stems from some kind of emptiness or unhappiness from inside.

Regardless of how nice your clothes are or how many cars you have, all external stuff cannot make you internally happy.”

Things change when time passes, and so did Jeremy. “I have changed for the better. Earlier, my curiosity made me want to do things which grown-ups did. But I soon realised that things just

didn’t turn out right. Its not me, but a higher power involved, who controls me.”

And with this, Jeremy merrily shows off a tattoo on his right foot which has the date ‘24-9-00’ embossed on his flesh. “That’s my sobriety date and it’s on my right foot to remind me of all the years of starting on the wrong foot.”

What about the left foot? Yes, it has a ‘triskele’, a motif of three interlocked spirals. “The spirals represent me, my mom and my sister interlocked in unity, despite everything changing around us.”

Speaking about tattoos, his association with symbols don’t end yet. The actor has been the brand ambassador for Ed Hardy Clothing, for almost eight years. Ed Hardy clothing line is based on the famous American tattoo artists Don Ed Hardy’s designs, which have been replicated on to shirts, caps and accessories by designer Christian Audigier.

The actor was going for the billboard musical awards and needed an outfit. He walked into a store and was pretty impressed with the collection.

Upon enquiring about the owner of the store, Jeremy was introduced to Christian, who designed him an outfit. “People loved Chris’s designs. I even wore them for the MTV music awards. Eventually, I started doing events for him, we became a team, and now we are called almost everywhere to throw an Ed Hardy party.”

Endorsing a cool fashion line is amazing, but what about Jeremy’s own personal style statement?

“I used to dress flamboyantly earlier, but now that I am getting older, it’s more about comfort. I like jeans, soft t-shirts.” Jeremy laughingly complains

about finding it hard to find well-fitting clothes.

“Now that my muscles have grown, I end up ripping a lot of clothes”, says Jeremy jokingly.

Other than hosting fashion shows around the world for the fashion house, Jeremy has a tight schedule ahead. He is planning on a small indie project with a producer friend of his and will have him starring as a fictional late 80s conman who ends up writing a book on prison fitness, in jail.

The word ‘fitness’ seems conspicuous in Jeremy, after all his brawny body speaks for itself. The actor always had an inclination towards sports, and has been a part of several charity events involving sports. But fitness is not all about a great body; it’s more of good health. “I hit the gym not for aesthetics, but for athleticism. I train for better performance, strength, endurance and power.” And so we believe, without a doubt!

Now fitness doesn’t end here for Jeremy. In fact, he owns a website called ‘www.nationsupplements. com’ which has a team of spokesperson who have themselves overcome adversities, in addition to a virtual trainer. “I am passionate about this site.

It’s a place where people can learn about various nutritional supplements, follow training and have a fit life”, says Jeremy. He also intends to start a non-profit organisation for the same.

So, spanning a career from being a child star, singer, fashion show host to the present Jeremy, this has been one wild journey, feels Jeremy. “I feel like I have lived a lot of lives already. Looking back at my journey, I wouldn’t change anything. I feel I am the person today because of what I have done and the success I have met.”

“Luckily I had people around me who loved me, and I realised I was hurting them. That kept me grounded.

trip to party central, Ibiza, with friends at the age of 18 sparked Joelle’s love affair with DJing; on arrival home, she started messing around on her brother’s decks and eventually started tapping into the music scene. Now, at 26, after years of hard work and determination, the English born mixing extravaganza is cementing her reputation as a successful DJ and catching the attention of popular music moguls.

Originally from Walton-on Thames in Surrey, England, Atkins is the newest addition to one of the coolest clubs, Crystal lounge in the W Hotel. Life in Doha is a far cry from what she’s used to back home, “Every morning I wake up and have to pinch myself so I know it’s real,” she modestly admits; and so would we, rising in the surroundings of a lush apartment in the W Hotel’s residences.

For years she has been growing her repertoire in London, playing in successful clubs Pasha and Ministry of Sound; her popularity and introduction to key contacts in the music biz eventually led her to shores abroad, allowing her to gig in countries including Russia, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Miami, India and now, Doha.

Her musical influences include artists like Pete Tong and Hernan Cattaneo; the genre of music she creates is mostly house, “There are

lots of sub-genres in house but I like to play a variety to suit the Doha crowd, like deep, soulful US garage and funky, progressive electro,” she says. Her success can be seen as she recently caught the attention of mega DJ, Buenos Aires born Hernan Cattaneo, by landing a spot in his top 20 charts, “I only found out last week and I am really chuffed,” she beams proudly at our meeting in the W Hotel.

Atkins thinks that being a girl in a male-dominated industry is an advantage, as she reveals: “There aren’t that many of us battling to get to the top spot, it is a lot more competitive between males.” But, is there any discrimination or jealously from males as a result of her success? “There are times when it can be slightly sexist, as is the case in most industries, but I have never found it difficult and generally everyone is always really supportive,” she shares.

Her tips for young girls looking to get into the industry are: “Be true to yourself and never give up on your dreams. There have been times when I have doubted myself; I’m not nearly as successful as I want to be as this takes a lot of hard work. Networking and production is very important; often people want everything from day one but learning the art of patience is a key to success.”

Joelle Atkins will be playing in the Crystal Lounge in the W Hotel on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. She’ll also be mixing up the hottest tunes at GLAM’s party on 15 December, come and celebrate with us ladies!

tereotypical Ireland is perceived by many as what you see in the movies; expanses of green countryside with villages that are filled with traditional, friendly folk-all of whom have an extreme fondness for alcohol! While some of these perceptions are true, Dublin is a multi-cultural city that offers the most discerning fashion traveller a mix of modern and traditional with its array of boutiques, malls, markets, nightlife, restaurants and historical sights.

Shopping in Dublin There are many great shopping areas in Dublin; however, a walk down Grafton Street will provide a variety of choice with a selection of high-end and affordable stores. It houses all the usual high street faves like Topshop, River Island, Office, Coast etc.

A visit to Ireland’s home grown luxury mall, Brown Thomas, is a must; at least a couple of hours are required to consume its extensive offerings of the latest designer collections of handbags, fashion, beauty and accessories.

For all you foot fetish fashionistas, the second floor is devoted to a fantastic shoe collection, stocking brands such as LK Bennett, Kurt Geiger and more high-end collections Gucci, Louboutin and Chloe (to name a few).

In the clothes department, the list of available designer brands is endless and would take pages to discuss but a key note is you can avail of Greek-born designer Mary Katrantzou’s latest range which caused a stir at London fashion week.

Take a trip on the luas (silver trams you’ll notice snaking around the city) to Dundrum Shopping Centre; be extra vigilant when crossing roads for oncoming trams, there has been many an incident of pre-occupied walkers carelessly getting injured by walking out in front of one.

On arrival at Dundrum, be prepared to shop until you drop in the surroundings of Ireland’s award winning shopping centre.

A good stop to visit here is Harvey Nichols, which specialises in many international luxury brands; also head to London designer favourite, Lipsy, and treat yourself to a cute party dress from the latest collection which boasts a cult following of celebrities and stocks the range of singer Pixie Lott’s sought after line. Fast-food restaurants are around to tackle hunger when it strikes; for a finer dining experience, head to the top floor which contains a larger selection of restaurants for those with a refined palette.

A visit to Avoka store on Suffolk Street offers a unique shopping experience; it has many offerings including household items like luxurious throws made from lamb’s wool and mohair and quirky jewellery. The best aspect of the store, however, is nothing to do with the clothing but the cafe nestled on the top floor; here you will find scrumptious dishes (the best thick cut home-made chips), with portions so huge, that its recommended you only order one meal between two!

For edgier shops, the best place to visit is Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. This homes a great vintage store, The Loft Market, offering quirky pieces and award winning lines of Ireland’s youngest talents. A trip to the boutique, Covet, gives customers the option of renting key seasonal highend pieces at a fraction of the price (good news if you’ve gone overboard spending in other stores and are looking for something ultra fashionable to wear just for a night!)

If planning a December trip, it’s worth visiting the Christmas market held at George’s Dock in the IFSC from 3-22 December. Bartering for gifts isn’t a common occurrence in Ireland but here, if lucky, you might be able to arrange a deal with the workers of the stalls, which are packed with jewellery, stocking fillers and leathers.

Dining If you’re a fan of steak and searching for a luxury dining experience then venture to Shanahan’s On The Green. It’s famous for super tasty slabs of beef, but, be warned that prices are steep and a steak will cost QR230 +.

Acapulco, a Mexican cuisine on South Great Georges Street, is another recommended spot to dine at a reasonable price.

The food is good and friendly staff are on hand to provide a promising evening in quirky surroundings.

Partying For an exclusive night on the tiles and the opportunity to maybe party with some celebrities, visit Lillie’s Bordello on Grafton Street. This hotspot allures the fashionable elite of the city and is renowned for throwing lavish bashes; its celebrity fans include Rihanna, U2 and all the Irish models.

Another celeb spot is Krystal nightclub, situated on Lower Camden Street; this club has great promotions on a Friday night of QR15 cocktails before 12pm.

Phoenix Park The world’s largest enclosed park in a city covering a whopping 707 hectares in total; to put into perspective its twice the size of New York’s Central Park and around 5 times the size of London’s Hyde Park. Its grounds home Dublin Zoo which is great to visit if you have the time. It is advisable to avoid visiting the park at night, especially if alone, as high level of crime rates in Ireland is a reality and one should always take precautions.

Trinity College For your intellectual side, head to one of the city’s oldest buildings (dates back to 1700’s), take a stroll around the beautiful grounds and visit the huge library which contains over one million books.

Horse-racing Similar to Qatar, Ireland is passionate about everything horsey and its horse trainers and breeding facilities are world renowned. Impressively, on a yearly basis it holds around 300 festival and race meetings spread throughout 26 race courses; not bad for a country its size.

A day out at the races is an absolute must for everyone, especially fashionistas, as it provides ample opportunity for fillies to glam up in new threads and parade the track; there may even be a chance to win the prize for best dressed lady. er first name, Amal, means hope in Arabic, and this lady certainly has no shortage of it with her aspirations for the future.

Amal Murad, from Dubai, is one of the most coveted abaya designers in the Middle-East; she’s worked as a judge on MBC channel for the famous abaya competition, styled famous Arabic figures for a photo shoot in L’Officiel magazine, and this year, made one of her dreams become a reality when she showcased her designs on the catwalk at Rome Fashion Week. “It was my first step to be recognised internationally and has definitely been one of the biggest accomplishments on my little journey,” she beams proudly at our meeting in Zai fashion house.

Ever since she was a little girl, works of art adorning the walls of her family home have played a huge part of her creative influences, especially as the pieces were crafted by a professional painter who is no other than her father. “I have always been interested in fashion design; I used to save all my money as a child to buy fashion magazines that were imported from the US and the UK, because at the time, we didn’t have them available in the Gulf.”

At 12, with creativity brimming from her young mind, she drew a picture of a dress which her mother encouraged her to bring to the tailor to make.

younger sister wore the very same dress during Eid celebrations.

Whilst studying a degree in university, she applied herself on various fashion courses and regularly attended a prestigious fashion seminar in Paris called “Class Seminar”.

In 2005 she established her brand Redaa and it quickly climbed the style ranks attracting the attention of some of the biggest Middle-Eastern celebrities who can often be spotted on the red carpet donning one of the sought after designs. “When I first established my brand, I tried to combine traditional and contemporary elements; I wanted to represent our identity from the GCC whilst at the same time creating something trendy in which the younger generation can express themselves.”

Her designer inspirations change every season but a big influence on her style was as a result of her style icon, Yves Saint Lauren, “I learnt to have passion for fashion looking at his wonderful collections. Every year I make sure to attend all the fashion shows to gather ideas for colour combinations. I also love Marc Jacobs and Lanvin’s draping designs.”

The latest abaya collection is very stylish with its careful attention to detail; belts nip the waistline for definition and outfits are accompanied with gorgeous matching bags and shoes, whilst delicate detailing of gold and red lace dazzle on other Abayas. “I want to create Abayas that are recognised across the world as they are a beautiful symbolization of our culture. For years we have been importing things from other parts of the world, now is our chance to export a part of our culture to the West.”

W

earing one of the pieces from Mariam Al Mazro’s latest collection you’re guaranteed to feel like you’ve left reality and entered a magical realm of fairytale fantasy. The new line’s theme is inspired by the popular second movie, Alice in Wonderland, which sees Alice grow into a woman. This theme is represented in the clothing with cutesy designs dominated with girly pinks and pale blues on silk material.

Al Mazro, from Sharjah, is quickly making a name for herself across the Middle-East; with four fashion shows in Dubai under her belt and the unveiling of this new whimsical collection she looks set for a stellar career.

Her own fashion fairytale began in the summer of 2006, “I made a top for my sister who was actually studying fashion design at the time; she encouraged me to carry on making more pieces for friends and things just took off from there,” Al Mazro reveals.

With firm support from her whole family, she started designing dresses and tops and eventually caught the eye of some industry insiders when she was invited to attend the Sharjah bridal show in 2007. Since then, she has been busy discovering her own sense of style before making her first collection at the end of 2008.

“This current collection is the one that has really caught the attention of the crowd. I thought the inspiration of Alice in Wonderland was the best representation of my collection; the transition from childhood to adulthood really attracted me as these dresses are directed at the younger generation and will hopefully capture their minds too.”

With inspirations from designers like Etro and Christian Lacroix, Al Mazro crafted a plan and some fitting designs for her first collection in Doha, “There are only eight pieces available here. Before I came, I did some research into the market and found out that people really love exclusivity. I usually make around 30 pieces per collection; however, I tailored these eight exclusive and exquisite designs especially for Qatar.”

The range is versatile and appeals to a variety of tastes and different nationalities. “In our culture, women having gatherings in houses for different occasions like weddings and henna parties. And for women who don’t wear Abayas, these dresses can be worn to glamorous events.”

It won’t be long until Al Mazro has positioned herself globally as a successful designer and captured the attention of an international audience, “At the moment, I’m happy collaborating with boutique stores like ZAI and in the future I will hopefully have my own store, obviously this is a dream of every designer. I’m actually more inspired by the people I work with as I think when you interact with encouraging people your own personal creativity expands.”

Fresh Qatari talent Aishaz’ by Aisha A. Al-Naemi

Despite the fact it’s her first official collection, the creative ‘shoulder Jewel’ themed range of abayas by Qatari born Aisha Al-Naemi, look like they’ve been created by someone who’s been in the business for years.

The 24-year-old student of Mmarketing student is starting off exceptionally well for her first exhibition, “It all began when I created some designs for my friends and family, and with much encouragement and support from everyone, I decided to bring my designs to the public,” Al-Naemi shares.

The unique collection combines traditional and contemporary designs with its emphasis on shoulder detailing in beautiful beading and embroidery.

She counts Lanvin and Valentino as her designer inspirations and is extremely proud to be showcasing her collection in a store which carries such elite brands. “One of the reasons for collaborating with ZAI is because I adore this shop. Lanvin is one of my favourite designers, to have my clothes available in the same surroundings is a dream come true and one day I hope to be just as successful.”
