Claws out in clash of the Fashion Weeks
W
ar has broken out between Milan and New York – with London the first casualty – as the top fashion capitals clash over the dates of their rival style marathons, held back-to-back once every six months. Twice a year the global pack of fashion buyers, style gurus and journalists trek across the world to scout styles for spring-summer and autumn-winter, stopping for eight days in New York, five in London, seven in Milan and nine for the finale in Paris. But the 29-day Fashion Week calendar for September 2012 has been jumbled up in an unseemly game of musical chairs – with Milan overlapping New York by a day, and running over the entire duration of London's own fashion week. The mix-up originated during the summer, when New York announced it was shifting its shows back by a week to avoid the Labor Day holiday weekend, which it says was harming

business. London duly slid its dates back to accommodate New York - but the dance ground to a halt in Milan, where the National Chamber of Italian Fashion flatly refused to budge. Shifting them by even a few days, it argued, would put too great a squeeze on the production schedule for Italian fashion houses, making it impossible to get their clothes into stores in time for the spring-summer season. Only Paris, which wraps up the fashion marathon, is so far unaffected with its dates following on from Milan. As things stand, the fashion pack will have to choose between the capitals, a headache for journalists and buyers – and an even bigger one for models. But for fashion houses, who invest heavily to showcase their collections before the global fashion pack, the prospect of sending out models to a half-empty room spells disaster.
Karl Lagerfeld to launch two new lines next year
G
erman multitasker Karl Lagerfeld will release two new ranges in January designed to relaunch his namesake brand. Set to launch during haute couture week in Paris, a 100-piece collection simply named Karl will become available on designer shopping site Net-à-Porter.com. But as opposed to much of the e-store's usual offerings, the range will retail at affordable prices, ranging from €60 to €300. Besides designing for Chanel, the designer recently demonstrated his "love for the masses," collaborating with budget retailers including Macy's, while putting his own label on hold for a year. According to the Fashion Foie Gras blog, another line called Karl Lagerfeld Paris will also launch during couture week. Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli to be focus of next Met exhibit
Haute couture saved by Middle Eastern socialites
W
hile designers are trying to target Western customers with affordable fashion chain collaborations or diffusion lines, their haute couture branches are almost single-handedly being kept alive by clients in the wealthy Gulf countries, reports the UK Telegraph. "I want to be different from others," a frequent buyer explains. "What I want is unique pieces, extravagant and chic. I do not want to pay 5,000 or 6,000 euros for a dress, as it happened to me with a Pucci outfit recently, and see it on somebody else the same evening." For these lucky few, a calendar full of weddings and other high-profile social events de-
mands a wardrobe of one-off dresses by the likes of Christian Dior, Stephane Rolland, Valentino and Chanel, which can cost around $75,000 a piece. "I have known of many occasions when a couturier will be invited to a private home for a showing. The hostess will buy maybe 20, 30 couture outfits for a season," Simon Lock, a creative director of Dubai Fashion Week, told the newspaper. He adds: "I had the opportunity to see a wedding that was recently held here in Dubai. 4,000 women were invited to the reception and everybody in the room was wearing haute couture."

he works of the two Italian designers will engage in an "anachronistic conversation" as part of the New York Metropolitan Costume Institue's fashion exhibition next year. According to Women's Wear Daily, the reason to stage an exhibit of the late Schiaparelli now is that the Institute was able to obtain large parts of the designer's archives. "Once we got Schiaparelli as the core part of what we wanted to do, it became a logical jump to Miuccia," one of the organizers told the paper. "They are both Italian women, and even though Miuccia might not describe herself as a feminist, what we see is these two very strong women with a very strong aesthetic." The connection between Schiaparelli's work of the 1920s-1950s and that of Prada might not seem evident at first glance, but a spokesperson for the Met insisted that "they are both very provocative for their time...we thought it would be very interesting to pit these two women together in an anachronistic conversation." In any case, Australian film director Baz Luhrmann – who has been chosen as the creative director for the exhibit, while star of his movie The Great Gatsby Carey Mulligan will chair with Prada and Vogue's Anna Wintour – will have a hard time paralleling the recordbreaking success of Alexander McQueen's "Savage Beauty" display at the Institute that drew more than 600,000 visitors this year. Karen Millen Hosts 30th Birthday Bash High street fave Karen Millen kicked off its 30th birthday in true style with a cool party at its store in the Villaggio Mall. Since its founding in 1981, it has cemented its reputation as the go-to brand for design-led luxury at affordable prices. 30 years on, the covetable collection of clothing and accessories prove that over time, things are only getting better! Pretty models paraded around the store showcasing the A/W 2011 range which focuses on laid-back glamour. Sweet Style from L'Occitane L'Occitane teamed up with the Pastry Chef team from Four Seasons Doha for the launch of its new delicious festive collections: Délice des Fleurs and Délice des Fruits – which borrow inspiration from a traditional sweets factory in the heart of Provence, in France. Attendees were given a special treat – the opportunity to watch Four Seasons Pastry Chef Loic Carbonnet whip up sweet delights in the form of tasty Rose and Raspberry marshmallows and Lemon Pates de Fruit – which complimented the theme of the new collections. Delice des Fleurs is inspired by the sweet scents of rose and violet petals, delicately draped in sugar, while on the other hand, Délice des Fruits, reflects scents of citrus fruits blended with sugar. So when the luxurious Rene Caovilla boutique held a special event allowing ladies to do just that, you can only imagine the excitement that ensued. With help from a Rene Caovilla Artisan, attendees were encouraged to design their very own sparkling, show stopping shoes, while also viewing a selection of pieces from the vintage collection. One was really spoiled for choice with different colours, materials and Swarovski crystal charts to choose from. As Rene Caovilla shoes take hours of dedicated craftsmanship to produce, unfortunately the custom made 26 / NOVEMBER 2011
orders take a while to deliver, however, not much longer ladies! In store, you'll find the A/W collection is alive with a myriad of enticing styles, from jewelled sandals covered with marabou feathers, to refined elegant pieces sparkling with Swarovski crystals. The Rene Caovilla tale started in the 1920s with Edoardo Caovilla, who paved his way for success with the trade he learned from Luigi Voltan, the man behind Riviera del Brenta's distinguished history of shoemaking. GLAM chats to Rene's son, also named Edoardo, who handles the financial and publishing aspect of the brand. According to Edoardo, Rene Caovilla is different from other luxury brands. "We're one of the few left still owned and managed by ourselves. Behind our brand there is a history, a tale of excellent capability in embroidery and production." A Rene Caovilla typical buyer "is a lady who is very knowledgeable, appreciates quality and fine craftsmanship." Despite a difficult climate, Edoardo highlights: "We understand that less people are buying, however when they do purchase something, they seek the top, and we're lucky to be considered in this segment of the market." New openings will be ongoing. "First, in Taipei, in six months time Beijing and many others to come in China. We'll open a third one in Moscow and possibly one in Miami."

he style was ranked up full notch as film and fashion folk descended on Katara Cultural Village for the glitzy Doha Tribeca Film Festival. A star-studded opening ceremony encouraged thousands of attendees to pack in to the spectacular Katara Open Air Theatre for the world premiere of Arabian epic Black gold. The film's stars Antonio Banderas, Frieda Pinto, Tahar Rahim, Riz Ahmed, Mark Strong, Jan Uddin, Akin Gazi, managed to cause a stir on the red carpet throughout the festival. As did a host of other celebrities in the form of Yosra, Nadine Labaki, and Doha Film Institute Executive Director Amanda Palmer – who all got the opportunity to showcase their stunning style files with help from two of the world's most prominent fashion designers – Stephane Rolland and Manish Malhotra – both in attendance. And let's not forget Robert De Niro, Michelle Yeoh, Omar Sharif and a whole bunch of other A-listers who helped boost star credentials. With a myriad of movies to choose from and a
range of other activities such as workshops and interactive sessions – the crowd certainly wasn't let down. 'Doha Talks' proved popular, especially 'She is Film' which four female filmmakers – Nadine Labaki, Yasemin Samdereli, Jasmila Zbanic and Nansun Phi – take centre stage to discuss subjects such as politics, religion and women working in the industry; While an 'In Conversation' session with sexy Spanish star Antonio Banderas set hearts a flutter when he shared details of his life and prolific film career to a packed out audience. A perfect finale to the festival came with a show from singing sensation, Leona Lewis. The beautiful British chart topper belted out a powerful performance of her hit songs such as Bleeding Love and Collide, as well as some renditions of popular hits consisting Snow Patrol's tear-jerker Run, Grenade by Bruno Mars and Seal's Kiss From A Rose.

Bollywood on the Ramp GLAM's orna ballout chats with India's leading fashion designer at the festival
D
espite numerous interviews and photo calls at the bustling Doha Tribeca Film Festival, India's top fashion designer Manish Malhotra is calm and polite when GLAM meets him. Dressed smartly in a blue (his fave colour) shirt, pin striped waistcoat and fitted pants – he's the epitome of cool, exuding an inviting aura boosted by his gentle voice and handsome looks. He is actually pretty humble considering the fact he's the man behind the style of Bollywood's biggest stars such as Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Kajol, Karisma Kapoor – to name a few – in other words the movers and shakers of fashion in film, whose association has ultimately caused him to become quite the celebrity himself. It's Malhotra's first time in Doha, and he's been given the mammoth task of creating bespoke designs for the festival's stars including Doha Film Institute Executive Director Amanda Palmer, Yosra, Dalia El Bahairy and Dorra Zarrouk, for the MENA premiere of Bollywood: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told. "I'm very excited to be here especially during this special time of Diwali," the designing extravaganza enthralled. Malhotra is characterised by his fabulous fashion creations that grace the figures of Bollywood's screen sirens, and it is thanks to the opulent colourful combinations made up of luxurious materials, intricate embroidery, embellishments, and an India meets West theme that has caused the fashion world to fall at his feet. He proves to be hit among Arab clientele, especially in Dubai where he has a store. "I think it is the opulence of the designs that appeals to women. I haven't got any clients in Doha but hope that people will appreciate my work, and would of course love to open a store here in the future." Malhotra started his career as a costume designer for film, and this set the foundations for him to carve out a career as India's most successful fashion designer. So it is unsurprising that, aside from fashion, what really makes him tick, is film. "I really love watching movies, any spare time or opportunity I get, I watch them. I've grown up watching films and they've been a huge influence on my fashion career." However, despite his movie affection, he can't quite nail his most memorable fashion moment in film, as, "there have been so many of them." Reflecting his humble persona, when GLAM quizzed him as to who has been his biggest support and inspiration, he shared: "It has to be my mother because we are actually very similar." Cute! When I meet Shaima Al-Hammadi for an exclusive photo shoot and interview at Doha's Torch Hotel, two things take me by surprise right away.
First
the tower that housed the 2006 Asian Games cauldron in Aspire Zone has been refashioned into a uber cool hotel. Second, that Shaima is just 26. Her fresh complexion and doll-like features give her a youthful vibe and I wouldn't have guessed she was a day older than 21. That is, until, she starts talking and I quickly learn that her wit and intelligence seem go beyond the birthdays she has clocked! A petite star with a huge personality, she is the Gulf girl who has it all: looks, a hit TV presenting job, and to top it all – a down-toearth attitude. The Omani-born presenter burst on to the media scene 20 years ago. "I started presenting when I was just six years old so it has always played a huge role in my life. I love working in the media as you have the ability to inspire and change people's lives," she reveals. In Qatar for the past four years, she currently hosts a popular Ara40 / NOVEMBER 2011
bic show Al Daar (In the House) on Qatar TV which sees her report on various subjects including education, health, culture and history. "I absolutely love it here; it's safe, the people are friendly and it's not too far from Oman so it's convenient to see my family and friends." Although in love with her job, she finds the pressures that come with it sometimes make it difficult to balance her time. "Working in the spotlight means you have to give it everything and there is a certain lack of privacy. However, it's something I've learned to accept and all the positive aspects certainly outweigh the negatives. This is my life, I wouldn't change it," she honestly shares. Al-Hammadi's show keeps her busy, and travelling around the region for various reports and interviews is commonplace. Despite not seeing her family as often as she would like, they are all hugely supportive of her career choice. "My family is always motivating me and telling me that God has given me something, and that I have a responsibility and

ability to educate people with information through my work." On camera is where Al-Hammadi feels at home. "It is my world and I'm always anticipating that moment. There's a lot of behind the scenes work involving scripts, books and the internet. But when I'm presenting, especially live, is when I'm in my element." In her 20 years of working in the industry, Al-Hammadi can't pinpoint her favourite moment. "I feel like I have to constantly learn and excel in my career. I'm truly appreciative that I have so much support and am well known in the Gulf and Arab countries, but I still want to keep growing and learning as much as I can." The pretty star looks forward to her free time where she can enjoy her other passions. "Work is hectic, but when I get the chance I enjoy listening to music, singing, reading, catching up with friends and getting massages – anything to help me unwind." She is also into fashion, and her fave designer is Lebanese haute couturist Elie Saab. "I admire his work – the way he chooses materials, cuts and colours to produce gowns with exceptional attention to detail. I'm actually wearing one of his gowns on the red carpet at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival." Girls who like the idea of a career in television have to be 100 percent certain before they embark on it, according to Al-Hammadi, "It is by no means an easy job as you've to be confident, focused and willing to give it all. You have to remember that there won't always be time for family and friends, or sometimes you might not be able to take a vacation for two years. The glamorous style goddess opens up to GLAM about the collaborative coup of the year... DONATELLA ON... THE COLLABORATION When H&M asked me at the beginning of the year to do a collaboration, I said yes straight away. Many young people don't really know Versace, or what Versace represents. I want to show to them what Versace is about and what makes Versace an iconic brand. I've gone on a journey through the archives, right up to the present day. It's like a CD of the greatest hits, all of the icons in one collection. It's true that three years ago I said that I wouldn't do a collaboration, but that was because at the time I was focused on consolidating Versace's position as a luxury house in the 21st century. Now that we've done that, it is the correct moment to do a collaboration.
DONATELLA ON... H&M The collaboration with H&M has been a real revelation for me. I feel 58 / NOVEMBER 2011
like I'm free to do whatever I want, to make the clothes that I want to make. It's amazing – H&M don't just want clothes, they want real fashion, without compromise. When I saw the samples for the first time, they were incredible. With some of the pieces, I couldn't believe it. I thought, is it a mistake? Is it Versace? Or is it H&M? It made me think about why fashion is so fixated with rules. Fashion should be more fun, with more inspiration, more excitement. When the young designers on my team saw the clothes, they came begging to me, asking if they could buy it now. The collaboration has caused so much excitement for everyone at Versace, it makes me really happy
DONATELLA ON... CREATING THE COLLECTION I knew that I wanted to create an iconic collection. I get so many young people asking me where they can get a Versace printed T-shirt, or a studded jacket. They want to know where they can find these pieces.

And having Lady Gaga wear Versace has been amazing. She has wanted to wear Versace for a long time, but I wasn't ready for it. Now it's the right fit. It proved to me this is the right moment for this look. Of this I'm sure, 100%. Nobody does it like Versace. Forgive me for being immodest, but nobody does. For the collection, the iconic pieces come from the past right up to the present, all reworked for H&M. Everything has been made right for today: proportions are different, the cuts are different, but the icons are still recognisable. It is amazing for me to see how these iconic pieces seem even more relevant now. It makes me so proud, because with many of them I worked next to my brother Gianni when he created them. It gives me a very good feeling. To make the collection, I didn't need to visit the archive. It's all here, in my memory.
DONATELLA ON... THE ICONS OF VERSACE There are so many iconic moments in the history of Versace. One of the most iconic is when Gianni invented the supermodel. For the first time, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford were on the catwalk together. George Michael was singing Freedom. Everybody remembers that show. Or when Jennifer Lopez wore the palm print dress. The next day she was on the cover of every newspaper around the world. It was amazing. Of course there is Liz Hurley in the safety pin dress too. There are always new icons of Versace: there's Angelina Jolie wearing an incredible Versace couture gown, and Lady Gaga wearing a studded leather archive look. You have all these extremes. I love extremes. I don't like anything in the middle.
DONATELLA ON... THE ICONS FOR H&M There are so many iconic moments in the collection for H&M. One of my favourites is the metal mesh dress. Gianni was the first to use metal mesh in fashion. I remember when I first saw what he had created. I was on set with the photographer Richard Avedon, one of the

worlds greatest, because Gianni only ever worked with the best, just like myself. There was this group picture of fifteen models all lying on pillows, all of them wearing metal mesh dresses. When Avedon and I saw it, we said to each other, wow, what is this? It was Gianni's cutting that made metal mesh look soft and romantic. It was difficult, but he did it. And the way the metal mesh drapes in the H&M collection is just beautiful.
DONATELLA ON... THE PRINTS The prints are one of the most important parts of the Versace heritage. For H&M, we have used my prints as well as Gianni's prints. From the mid-90s we have used the palm tree print, and also the Miami print. And from Versace today we have used my "techno Japan" print. One of my favourite pieces from the collection is the print dress which has the techno Japan print in six different colours – from the front its blue, black and green, and when you turn it's a whole other story. I love the printed leggings, the printed cashmere sweaters, and the printed jeans, too. Nobody does printed jeans, so I thought, why not do it? The H&M collaboration has given me the freedom, and the chance, to do it. There are also other ways with prints in the collection, like the printed sequin and fringe dress, which uses a print that the artist Jim Dine created for the house in the 1990s, the printed fringing an idea that comes from one of my most recent collections.
DONATELLA ON... THE MANY SIDES OF VERSACE The Versace DNA is full of contrasts that create the unique signature of the house, and you can see it in so many of the iconic pieces for H&M. I love the jersey dress with the studs, because it shows how there is always a balance between hard and soft in Versace. It is also how I believe women are too: strong, but also with a softer side. There is also the contrast between the exuberance of the prints, and then the classicism of the crepe dresses with gold buttons, like the black dress with the cutaway back, or the dress with lace panels at the NOVEMBER 2011 / 59

side. It's a different mood, but it's always all Versace.
DONATELLA ON... THE ACCESSORIES FOR WOMEN I love all of the collection, and I especially love the accessories. The jewellery is just gorgeous, iconic – the flower rings are especially beautiful. I want them all. The printed bags with the Miami print on them are amazing, and the shoes are exactly what I like: there are only high heels. I don't do sneakers.
DONATELLA ON... THE ICONIC PIECES FOR MEN The Versace man is masculine, determined and heroic. There are so many different sides to him: Versace is about dressing many different people, but still giving them an identity. There's the classic suits, and the shirts, but then there's also the prints, like the black and white optical print, or the crocodile print on the jeans. And then there's the leather pieces, and also the black shorts too. I've noticed that even in the winter, young people are wearing shorts. And so I've done them here too. They look amazing with the studded leather jacket, so young and fresh.
DONATELLA ON... THE WORLD OF VERSACE Gianni was the first to do pieces for the home, so it's a great privilege to be the first designer collaboration to create home pieces for H&M. 60 / NOVEMBER 2011
We've used the Techno Japan print to make these cushion and duvet covers, which are just incredible. My own home is full of Versace home pieces. I mix up pieces from the new collections with pieces from the archive, changing it all the time. One thing I cannot stand is white houses anymore. It is easy to have a white house, easy to look like you have good taste. But to me, that is banality. That's why I love prints!
DONATELLA ON... thoughts ABOUT THE COLLABORATION When we were creating the collection, I wanted to do more and more and more. They had to stop me! It's such a big collection, and there was nothing that I couldn't do. They never said, "we'll see if we can do it". Always, the answer was, "yes". I've worked with some extraordinary people, from photographers to stylists, but I've never worked with a team like that at H&M before. For me, it's amazing to be able to reach a new generation. I'm dying to see what they do with these clothes. They'll probably wear a gorgeous skirt with big biker boots – who knows? I really want to show them what fashion is all about. Fashion should be fun. It's not art, it's fun. It needs to give you pleasure. I cannot wait to wear more from the H&M collaboration. I've already worn the studded leather dress at my most recent menswear show. Next I want to wear the dress with the pink studs – I love studs. And I'd love to wear the printed dress. I need to wear all of them! I need them all now!

A
gainst the glittery and starry backdrop of Dolce & Gabbana's F/W 2011 collection models clutched exquisite gold, pearl and multi-coloured gem encrusted chain bags worn with skirts and shoes of a matching design. Meanwhile at Lanvin, models were adorned with huge jeweled chokers and chunky gold cuffs. This season's opulence isn't just about gold, pearls and jewels. Designers have paid special focus to the use of luxurious fabrics and sensual textures that entice the senses of sight and touch. It is basically about fashion that you can enjoy feeling, stroking and touching. Fur, real and faux, made an appearance in countless designers' F/W 2011 collections and not just in your typical blacks, greys and whites, but in jewel colours too. Fur is usually a popular winter trend, but this time around, it was used more as a finishing or accessory rather than as a garment. This is good news for Doha dwellers who may want to try out the fur trend, since our winters aren't that cold that we can wear fur coats! At Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen fur was used as trimmings on collars, shoulders and cuffs as well as stoles worn around the neck and the arms. Snakeskin in rich jewel hues dominated the catwalk at Gucci creating a whole new way to wear animal skins. Velvet was another big hit on the catwalks. Ever a luxe fabric, Gianfranco Ferre, Nina Ricci, Giorgio Armani and Elie Saab were just a handful of designers who produced jumpsuits, dresses, skirts and trouser suits in rich shades of velvet. Brocade and baroque prints are two other opulent styles that were featured in the collections of the likes of Mary Katranzou, Dries van Noten and Giles Deacon. And finally, feathering was hot on the runway, as featured at Alexander McQueen, Versace and Chanel. Feathers were packed
together very close on the garments, creating that look of opulence and excess. For the past few years with the economic recession, many designers, let alone the women who wear their creations, held off from producing creations that seemed too lavish or extravagant. Instead, what we saw for several seasons was the recurrent theme of simple tailoring and minimalism. Yet with this season's brazen show of luxurious fashion, it seems that designers finally deem it appropriate to bring out the extravagant. And that could reflect the fact that finally, after five hard years of economic austerity, things have started to look up in the world's financial climate. The fact that even Stella McCartney, Celine and Calvin Klein, champions of the minimalist trend, showcased beautiful and luxurious velvet and fur designs in their F/W 2011 collections is enough evidence in itself that times are changing. Back in September, designer Tom Ford told Vogue he was glad to be done with "disposable fashion which was constantly changing and lacked quality...It is time for a new elegance and clothes made from beautiful fabrics and exquisite details." The important thing to know about this trend of opulence is that it is not purely about excessive luxury. Rather it is about a more subtle and refined take on opulence. It is also a look at the past as well as the future. Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana 's Byzantine-inspired creations and the use of brocade and baroque style prints all suggest that we are interested in the opulence and wealth of old times as well as new. A decadent form of opulence you could say. "This is a different way of expressing opulence – more pared down" Peter Dundas of Pucci told Vogue, "It's hard to put your finger on it, but after the economic crash we want to return to tradition yet look forward, we want excitement."

This trend is perfect for evenings out, parties and other special occasions – look for ladylike silhouettes, pencil skirts and draped dresses. t's not everyday that I sit in the lap of luxury, so it was only natural to feel regal when a bunch of us were flown business class through Qatar Airways, in a sevenhour (and 50 minutes to be precise) flight, to an address where influence resides – the St. Regis Singapore. One cannot fail to notice the inspiring works of art that is part of St. Regis's exquisite ambience. Offering private access to one of the finest premier art collections in South East Asia, the collection showcases over 70 original works of art, including sculptures, paintings, and prints by artists from the international master Pablo Picasso to the indigenous genius Georgette Chen. You could spot these works, at the fine-dining restaurants, by the grand staircase or while you wait at the

lobby – it's simply conspicuous. A particular Reclining Woman by Columbian Figurative artist, Fernando Botero, outside the hotel's entrance, seemed a hit with the cameras. Culinary delights
No trip is complete without gorging on local delicacies, and the hotel's Yan Ting restaurant ensures you satisfy your palette with its authentic Cantonese cuisine. Not very adventurous when it comes to food, I managed to try the jellyfish. It's not soft, rather chewy, unlike other fishes...I stuck to the lobsters. Then there's the casual Italian dining
establishment, LaBrezza, which offers wholesome goodness of Italian cuisine. Traditional oven-baked pizzas, with a thin crust, that were laid on our tables got over in no time. Just when I was full with the risotto (and the slight parmesan cheese shavings simply adds magic), a plate of tiramisu came in. Could I say no to the classic Italian dessert? For some French-style dining, head over to the hotel's Brasserie Les Saveurs restaurant. Apart from its savoury menu, the restaurant's ambience exudes classic European elegance with its imposing floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the tropical gardens and

sparkling pool. The restaurant is beautiful in the evening, as the colourful fountains spring to life, and the music by the live orchestra adds to the tantalising French flavours. Sip and shake.
You can always have your coffee, but if you partake in the Afternoon Tea dance at the Brasserie Les Saveurs restaurant, give those 31 exotic tea varieties a try, at least a few, if not all. A whiff of the freshly infused tea leaves makes each sip all the more enjoyable. And while I hoped that sipping hot teas and having a bite of those breads and confectioneries would make me look "engaged", my peers NOVEMBER 2011 / 69

The famed Orchard Road is just a five minute walk from the St. Regis Singapore. For shop-o-holics, the road has a chain of high-end shopping malls, department stores, boutiques in addition to restaurants and cafes. The Night Safari at Singapore Zoo is the world's first safari park for nocturnal animal. Almost 30% of the species here are threatened; hence captive breeding is one of Night Safari's focus areas. Before embarking on the Safari, we were lucky enough to catch the day's last show of 'The Creatures of the Night' which had cute, furry creatures showing us some eco-friendly practices.
With a plethora of restaurants on the bank, and skyscrapers towering behind them – the view is breathtakingly beautiful especially at night when everything is lit up. A walk on the Clarke Street, located next to the quay, is a must to experience the vibrant night-life of Singapore.

"A pearl of a lady" is how veteran Italian designer Giorgio Armani defined his 2012 woman at Milan Fashion week. Similarly Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel's legendary head designer, created an underwater palace-themed stage at Paris Fashion Week; from belts and buttons, to bracelets and hair ornaments, it was all pearly. It's noteworthy to point out that the 'Master of Chic' didn't include a single pearl necklace, which adds weight to Jackie Kennedy's famously quoted comment that the pearl is appropriate for any occasion. Second to diamonds, pearls are the world's most sought after gem. It is no wonder the pearl symbolises health and longevity, since its healthy existence as a fashionable accessory, dates back to 350BC. The formation of the pearl is a lengthy and 'accidental' natural development. It's this spontaneity of nature, free of any human intervention or aid, that produces a 'natural' or 'wild' pearl. The popularity and rarity of the
pearl seems destined to increase as natural pearling is today confined mostly to the seas off Bahrain and the Australian Indian Ocean. Due to their rarity natural pearls are often sold singularly, with very few strands in existence. The value is based on size, shape, quality of its surface and unique luster. It's not surprising that Bahrain boasts one of the world's most proficient pearl testing laboratories; using gemological x-ray is the only method to positively distinguish natural pearls from beaded cultivated pearls. For a colourful collaboration, go the distance by mixing your long and shorter strands of pearls achieving a medley of seasonal hues and lengths. For a classy and elegant touch wear white or cream pearls against a basic black or navy, or be adventurous by showcasing them against the season's vivid colours of emerald, orange and candy pink. With on-going nautical inspired ensembles, tie a lariat knot into your 'opera' or 'rope' pearls as a length differentiator. They don't overdo the bling In fact, most Parisian women are not "blingy" at all. Accessories are minimal – one ring or a pair of delicate earrings. There is a lot more to this fashion house than the recent demise of John Galliano. Dior is one of the world's top fashion houses and the eponymous creation of late French designer Christian Dior. Dior founded his fashion house in 1946 and is credited with being the pioneer of the "New Look" – an era of fashion after the Second World War which saw the conservative, fabric-rationed clothes of the war time era being swapped for far more feminine, sensual and voluptuous creations that used a lot more fabric. Dior often took inspiration from art and nature, particularly France's botanical gardens, a theme that was replicated by John Galliano for Dior's Autumn/Winter 2010 and Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Think of French fashion and you think of Chanel. Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel started off as a milliner and ended up as one of the world's most famous fashion designers. She opened her first shop in 1912 selling custom-made hats, the beginning of several fashion revolutions. She taught women the concept of comfortable dressing, ditching uncomfortable corsets for corset-free dresses, and she introduced jersey fabric and trousers into the picture. Coco debuted the little black dress in 1926 and created the nautical look so iconic of Parisian style. Her Chanel 2.55 quilted chain bag – which she created for herself out of 76 / NOVEMBER 2011
practicality (she wanted a bag that would keep her hands free) – continues to be sought after by women worldwide and throughout the decades the Chanel suit – usually composed of a boxy jacket and kneelength skirt made from wool or tweed, finished with gold buttons - is a symbol of the elegant, high-flying woman. Did you know Coco Chanel got her nickname while working as a singer at a cabaret? A popular song was "Quia qu'a vu Coco dans le Trocadero" (Who saw Coco at the Trocadero) and after she performed it the audience cried "Coco! Coco!" and the nickname stuck. Christian Lacroix
Critics in the '80s said that Christian Lacroix did not understand the type of clothes women needed but he sure proved them wrong when he was awarded a CFDA award for being the most influential designer in 1987! Lacroix launched his fashion house in 1987 and with a background in theatrical costume and historical clothing, his creations were often opulent, fantastical and colourful. He created the "pouf" gown – a dress with a fluffy, ball-shaped skirt. The recent world recession brought much loss to the fashion house and ultimately its end, with Lacroix taking his final bow in 2009, but he remains to be one of France's greatest designers and his fashion lives on. Beauty Buzz Kate Winslet launches makeup range with Lancôme Following her modeling gigs for beauty brand Lancôme's L'Absolu Rouge lipstick and Trésor fragrance, Hollywood actress Kate Winslet is putting her relationship with Lancôme to a charitable use. In aid of her charity, the Golden Hat Foundation, which helps improve the lives of autistic children, Winslet has released a small beauty collection, including the face-illuminating Poudre Lumière, a L'Absolu Rouge lipstick, and Mini Le Vernis, a range of smaller-sized nail polishes in red and pink. Prices range from $15 to $40. However supplementing with too much vitamin A may actually contribute to hair loss, according to research from the University of Hawaii in the US. Of course, changing your diet won't transform fine, thin hair into mane-like tresses, but ensuring your diet includes plenty of growthpromoting protein and iron can make a difference. Aim for high-quality protein, such as eggs, poultry, and low-fat dairy. One way to give your hair a boost is to add beans and nuts, such as almonds, pecans, and cashews for zinc, iron, and biotin. Also dark leafy greens (spinach, broccoli and Swiss chard) contain vitamins A and C. Brazil nuts are high in selenium, which can promote scalp health, and walnuts and salmon are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Research published late last
month also revealed that stress, smoking, drinking, and even too much sunlight could contribute to hair loss, especially in women. While you can take preventative measures such as wearing a hat in the sun, quitting smoking, and reducing your alcohol consumption, researchers add that adopting healthier lifestyle choices could possibly help your hair grow back.
Deets on Dita Von Teese's fragrance revealed The famous burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese's debut signature scent, simply called Dita Von Teese, will be released at the end of the month. "The fragrance is not designed with a strict goal to appeal to men since it does not contain notes of fruit, candy or vanilla; the fragrance is made for a woman full of confidence and that's what makes her attractive," Von Teese said, adding that "a scent needs to reflect all the different facets of my personality. It had to be elegant, glamorous, sophisticated, sexy, dark, and mysterious." What this translates to in the fragrance are top notes of bergamot, peony, and pepper, followed by a heart of jasmine, tiare, and rose that melts into basenotes including patchouli, guaiac wood, sandalwood, incense, and musk. Bottled in a vintage-style flacon inspired by the 1930s, the perfume will be priced from €16.50 to €28.
New gel may work like Botox but without the needle Don't like needles or crow's feet? A new topical gel containing the same ingredient as Botox may soon be within reach to smooth away wrinkles without the pain. On September 21, health website WebMD reported on the new topical gel containing botulinum toxin type A, the same as in injectable Botox, to reduce wrinkling around the eyes. The product, created by Revance Therapeutics in California, has undergone two clinical studies showing promising results with few side effects. For the product to take effect, a patient needs to sit with the gel around the eye area for 30 minutes before it is wiped off. The gel works by penetrating the skin to "relax" the underlying muscles, similar to Allergan's Botox or other cosmetic injectables, including Dysport and Xeomin.Researcher and New York City plastic surgeon
Michael Kane will present the results of the studies on Saturday, September 24, at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Denver, Colorado. WebMD reported that no head-to-head comparisons have yet been made between the new gel and injectable products. Meanwhile, for those who want beauty with less pain, US-based company BellaNovus recently announced its new line of Ouchless Needle devices – small, disposable needles that numb the injection site while simultaneously cooling the surrounding skin. Traditional local anesthetic creams on the injection site can take more than half an hour to take effect, but BellaNovus may offer a way around this problem, by delivering a "precise stream of numbing vapocoolant to the skin just ahead of the tip of the needle just before the skin is pierced, and does not leave patients with post injection numbness."

Far less frequently do they launch pharmaceutical products, as BMW did this week with a new Hand Sanitizer aimed at its die-hard fans. Created in association with Austrian cosmetics brand Susanne Kaufmann, the Purif-i hand sanitizer is the first product launched in conjunction with BMW i, the German automaker's eco-friendly subbrand. Ignoring the fact that BMW i doesn't actually have any vehicles on the road yet, fans of the brand can express their love with a quick spray of the all-natural spray which BMW promises "simultaneously sanitizes and softens hands." The link with BMW i is explained in a statement, although consumers may need a little more persuading: "Purif-i was created for the BMW i generation, a generation always in search of products that not only make life in megacities easier, but also minimize environmental impact. Purif-i is composed entirely of herbal extracts and a combination of intelligent, super active substances." ritain boasts over 1400 heritage attractions, from stately homes to country mansions steeped in history, heritage and prestige, a remembrance of our rich and noble empire – today, a long, lost memory of glories past, but commemorated and featured in some of the grandest and most imposing of ancestral homes. Examples include the grand and imposing Blenheim House near Oxford, featuring baroque palatial at its grandest amid 2500 acres of gardens designed by Capability Brown and Chatsworth House in Derbyshire otherwise called Palace of the Peak. Cowley Manor is not a stately home of such grandeur or opulence. It's a country house, once owned by the Horlicks family, sitting between Cheltenham and Cirecenster in the picturesque (and rich) county of Gloucestershire, only 2.5 hours from London. When you drive up to Cowley Manor, through the village of Cowley, you know
you're in for a very special treat from the moment the tyres hit the gravel as you stop in the courtyard. It's a manor in the true sense of the word. And yet from the moment you enter and feel the weight of history, there is a very modern twist to the decor. This juxtaposition of old and new is mirrored throughout as the architecture of the building is counterbalanced by modern and iconoclastic home furnishings. The furnishings and furniture really make a statement. Inside, there are marvellous rooms in the main house with splendid views out to the lake, serene as it sits in the middle of rolling fields. There are all tastefully designed rooms in the stable block, which, while interesting, are not as grand as those in the main house with its peaceful and grand lake views. A meandering walk outside across the rolling 55 acres of woods, meadows, lakes and gardens is very gratifying and relaxing and

you clearly see why the gardens have been Grade 2 listed as you stroll round, followed discreetly by swans gliding across the lake towards you. There are underground springs that feed the water features, from the upper lake which cascades down to a series of water features into yet another lake and then another. Ultimately the waters find their way to the River Churn and then to the Thames. It's possible to picnic on the grounds, and revel in the quiet and beautifully landscaped gardens and gaze at the majesty of the building across the lake, all columns and giant windows. Another attraction nearby is the Church of St Mary's which dates back to the 13th century. But back to the hotel. The service is impeccable, discreet and yet friendly and the food – well if you like traditional English breakfast in a panelled great room with enormously high ceilings, all wood and history and see this remarkable view, you'd be writing this review! And by the by, the food is really rather good.
