BRICKBATS Fashion Heroes

I enjoyed the read about fashions greatest darlings in the last issue of GLAM. Blake Lively is my ultimate hero and it is great how she’s come so far in such little time. I found it interesting to read about the other ladies who have the fashion world falling at their feet! Maybe you could do a similar article on men – I can think of numerous boys worthy of a feature! Ruth Timmons

Buzzing Dear GLAM, The little snippets of news you featured regarding fashion and beauty are a good idea. As an avid reader of GLAM, I felt like you were missing the celebrity news aspect in some of the issues. I love, love, love to read about celebs and was pleased to see this. Looking forward to your next double issue, does this mean double the juice!! Sana Patel

Online Wonders Hello GLAM, I saw your article about online shopping websites, and I thought this was a cool idea as some of them I have never heard of and they are quite interesting. I’m really into fashion, music, celebrity and anything glamorous. As I’ve just moved to Doha, it would be great if you can feature some local bloggers, or share the best fashion blogs – it is something I’ve been doing back in the UK and I’d like to learn more about it here, I’ve heard it is quite popular in the Gulf! Rachel Martin

Competitions! Hi GLAM!!! I love your magazine, buy a copy every month, and attend all the GLAM nights at the Pearl Lounge without fail! When is the next GLAM night, there hasn’t been one in a while! I miss your competitions, such as best dressed lady etc. Hope you have one soon. And maybe you could have themed parties – I know everyone in the city loves to get dressed up! Cheers! Heba Al Mahini

Local Designers Hi, I saw the June edition of GLAM magazine and was very impressed to read all about the local, talented designers here. Firstly you featured Juan Daels, he’s designed for Rihanna, wow! And also budding jewellery designer Sarah Reece who hand makes everything. It is always good to learn about these people as that’s where to source the unique finds, yay! Fatma Al Dabeena

California Gurl I, know a place, where the grass is always greener... LOVE Katy Perry GLAM! I saw her on the cover and knew I had to have a copy of the mag. I’ve followed her all over the world to watch her in concert. Not so sure about her hubby Brand though, I think he’s a little bit controversial for an innocent California gal like Katy!! Who will be your next cover girl GLAM?? Anga Debowitz 12 / SUMMER 2011

Fashion 411 Hot and fresh fashion stories from around the globe Olsen twins’ e-commerce now live For the former child stars and current fashion entrepreneurs, one project at a time is never enough: in addition to their successful The Row label and Walmart fashion range, MaryKate and Ashley have launched their new online venture StyleMint. The first limited collection of t-shirts has just been released, with shopping suggestions tailored to customers’ personal preferences, submitted prior to the launch: short questionnaires are required to be filled in to attain membership at StyleMint. The range features eight different styles, priced at $29.95 each. Members will be able to share the individual t-shirts with their friends via Facebook or Twitter to ask for their shopping advice. StyleMint is part of BeachMint, an e-commerce company that also owns JewelMint, a similar ‘monthly fashion club’ for jewelry, curated by actress Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter. “BeachMint understands how online shopping is evolving and the importance of creating an authentic relationship between designer and customer,” Mary-Kate Olsen told Women’s Wear Daily. “With StyleMint.com, Ashley and I have created an online experience reflecting our love of style and allowing us to engage with our customers directly, which is an inspiring new way for us to think and create as designers.”

Post-Galliano Dior embraces eclecticism Christian Dior, taking its time finding a successor to John Galliano, firmly distanced itself from the disgraced British designer Monday with an eclectic collection at the Paris haute couture shows. Four months after firing Galliano over alleged racist slurs, Dior tasked his longtime righthand man Bill Gaytten to oversee a show inspired by everything from early 1980s Paris nightlife to the architect Frank Gehry. Gaytten, 51, an Englishman now steering the Dior-owned John Galliano label, took the bow at the end of the show, joined by his first assistant Susanna Venegas. Rather than dip into Dior’s archives (“We’ve done a lot of that recently”), Gaytten drew vision from the heyday of the Palace nightclub as well as Gehry’s curvaceous buildings and the work of graphic artist Jean-Paul Goude. The result was looks that built upon Dior’s signature belted silhouette, typified by enormous geometric forms, in colours that moved from bright blues and greens to beige with origami-like folds. Whimsical headwear included shooting stars and crescent moons – and in another break with the past, Dior’s star model, the US high school grad Karlie Kloss, closed rather than opened the show, in a voluminous wedding dress. 14 / SUMMER 2011

Giorgio Armani pays haute couture homage to Japan Giorgio Armani paid stylistic homage to Japan on day two of the Fall-Winter Paris haute couture shows with sharp bustier dresses making up a big chunk of his collection. No less than a dozen of the 44 looks from Armani Prive were figure-hugging, bare-shouldered numbers – some in black velvet, others in tangerine sequins including one that suggested a mermaid that had just emerged from the sea. Overall the styles matched with piled-up geisha hair-dos were edgier than the ivory wedding dress that the celebrated Italian designer provided Princess Charlene for her weekend nuptials with Monaco’s Prince Albert. Ever the Hollywood favourite, Armani’s show at the Palais de Chaillot boasted such front-row VIPs as Cate Blanchett, Daphne Guinness and Katie Holmes, who jumped from her seat to give a solo standing ovation at the end. Respectfully working the Japanese theme four months after the earthquake and tsunami that devastated much of the country, Armani balanced his trademark modernist tailoring with lots of silk and floral prints. From a large black overcoat with floral details, the collection moved through black wool crepe blazers and suits matched with straight-legged trousers best worn by the slimmest of hips. The bustier dresses came later, with the models seemingly poured into them like liquid mercury – harking back to the space-age theme of Armani’s previous haute couture outing in January.

Jackson ‘Thriller’ jacket sells for $1.8 million The red and black leather jacket worn by Michael Jackson in his Thriller video went under the hammer for $1.8 million a day after the second anniversary of the pop icon’s death. The jacket, which fetched several times its estimate of between $200,000 and $400,000, has “Love Michael Jackson” written on the sleeve, and a dedication in the lining to his long-time costume designers, to whom he gave it. No details were disclosed about the buyer, after the amount of the winning bid was posted on the website of Beverly Hills auction house Julien’s. The auctioneer described the jacket as “among the most recognizable and famous garments of the 20th century,” saying it sparked a 1980s fashion craze when it was copied and sold to adoring Jackson fans worldwide. Part of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Shambala Preserve in California, where Jackson’s two Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, have been living since 2006 when Jackson left the Neverland Ranch, it said. On Saturday, fans paid their respects on the second anniversary of Jackson’s death at the age of 50. He died from an overdose of the sedative propofol while preparing for a comeback series of concerts in London. His personal doctor, Conrad Murray, is due to go on trial for alleged manslaughter in Los Angeles in September.

Kelly Osbourne for Madonna’s Material Girl fall/winter collection The former reality TV star and daughter of rocker Ozzy remains the face of Madonna and daughter Lourdes’s fashion line for Macy’s this fall. Come September, Osbourne will star in several ads alongside quintessential New York City sights including Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza, Soho, the West Village, Little Italy, and Chinatown. The singer went through a considerable transformation, both physically and stylistically, following her appearance on US TV show Dancing with the Stars, turning her into a front row fixture during fashion weeks. She also made her chart debut thanks to a cover of Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach,” perhaps partially responsible for creating a bond between the two singers. Material Girl is exclusively sold at US department store Macy’s.

Fairy-tale looks from Valentino, Elie Saab at Paris shows Fairy-tale femininity held forth on the last full day of the Paris haute couture collections on Wednesday, with Valentino and Elie Saab unveiling elegant refined looks fit for a princess. Breaking from the sharp-edge modernism seen the day before from the likes of Giorgio Armani and Stephane Rolland, both houses offered their most exclusive clients the most finely crafted examples of high fashion. For Valentino, designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli kept the cutting simple for Cinderella-like dresses, gowns and coats that required hundreds of hours of embroidery and weaving. Danish top model Freja Beha Erichsen floated down the runway at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild in fine Chantilly lace with golden detailing. Other etheral looks included a black Cossack coat embroidered with gold sequins. Front-row VIPs included American actresses Anne Hathaway and Amanda Peet. At the Palais de Chaillot, Lebanese-born Saab stayed true to the classical lines that have made him a consistent favourite of red-carpet habitues from Hollywood to the Gulf. There was a something of a 1920’s glamour to his 41 looks-all dresses, apart from a couple of lace miniskirts – in tulle, chiffon and lace in shades of aquamarine, blush, blue and bronze. Swarovsky crystals added sparkle to many of the outfits, and Saab clearly enjoyed playing with all kinds of options for bared backs that lent a discreet sense of drama to otherwise angelic silhouettes.

“A carnal relationship”: New documentary tries to decipher women’s love for shoes The change in posture? The way they transform an outfit? Or even a power rush that sweeps through your body when you put them on? Experts, fans, designers, and celebrities try to explain their love for heels in God Save My Shoes. Director Julie Benasra set out on a quest to talk to everyone from burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese to the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie, from Christian Louboutin to Manolo Blahnik, and to all imaginable kinds of shoe fetishists around the globe to look at the phenomenon from a “psychological, sociological, historical, cultural, and erotic perspective.” Judging from the just-released trailer, many of them have trouble putting their passion into words, with designer Pierre Hardy saying, for instance: “I don’t know where this thirst for shoes comes from, but it doesn’t go through reason...for some girls, the shoe is a compulsive thing,” Hardy’s colleague Louboutin even goes as far as claiming that “women have a carnal relationship with their shoes.” The documentary is set to launch during Paris fashion week this fall. A ‘production diary’ about Christian Louboutin is already live. Women’s (and some men’s) obsession with shoes has previously been the focus of the musical Shoes at London’s Sadler’s Wells theater, while fashion documentaries as a whole – new launches include This is my dream on Yohji Yamamoto, Bill Cunningham: New York on the legendary street style photographer, and L’Amour Fou on the relationship between Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge – continue to fascinate the fashion crowd. Watch the trailer at http://youtu.be/9Dk66xz8te0. www.godsavemyshoes.com

Trendwatch: bright colors to stay through next spring This spring has been all about popping shades and the so-called color blocking, but no matter how popular the brights have been (and still are), international designers believe shoppers won’t be tired of the trend come next year. At least, that is the impression you will get by looking at this year’s offering of resort collections so far. Shows and lookbook releases for the spring/summer 2012 ‘pre-season’ are in full swing, and from Burberry to Chanel, they go for the glow. Brands seem to be especially smitten by yellow, with Burberry featuring a range of lemon-colored dresses and Chanel showing a whole mini-collection in the sunny shade at their cruise show in the South of France last month. Neons are also here to stay if you trust Diane von Furstenberg, who worked glowing pinks, greens, and oranges into her resort show, as did Michael Kors whose suggestions for next spring have a definite ‘neoprene’ feel. Thakoon, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen’s McQ line also infused their resort collections with splashes of bright color.

Shop it while you can: Jil Sander’s next Uniqlo range to be her last Urban style blog Hypebeast reports, citing Asian fashion site Fashion Snap that the designer’s upcoming fall/winter collection for the Japanese retailer, scheduled for a September release will mark the end of their collaboration. Initially launched for fall/winter 2009, the partnership brought the German designer’s minimal creations to the mass market for the first time. Sander had left her own fashion house, now headed by Belgian designer Raf Simons, when it was bought by Italian luxury company Prada. But dry your tears, designer collaboration lovers, there are some exciting new launches in the pipeline: Italian designer Donatella Versace is currently working on her line for Swedish retail chain H&M, and Paris-based couturier Giambattista Valli has announced he will design for US department store Macy’s. www.uniqlo.com All content from Relax News - afprelaxnews.com

GLAM

Tropicana

There were bananas at Prada, oranges at Stella McCartney and cherries at Moschino Cheap ‘n’ Chic – all making one fruity fashion cocktail; while the exotic flowers printed on ladylike dresses in Dior’s S/S 2011 ready-to-wear collection looked like they had come straight out of Hawaii. There’s one thing to be sure – if you aren’t going to the Maldives or Hawaii this summer, you can at least dress as if you’ve been there already!

Style Tips:

ETRO SS/11

A ladylike dress nipped in at the waist and has a flared A-line skirt printed with tropical flowers or fruit will go perfectly with raffia or cork wedges, or some on-trend rope sandals. Toughen the look up by wearing an open khaki utility shirt on top. If you decide to go for a tropical flower or fruit printed skirt or trousers, keep things simple on top with a solid block color tee. Add some tropical pizzazz to a plain outfit with a tropical bird pendant or a bag printed with tropical flowers.

Tribal Print

This summer is all about print; notably tribal print which appeared on the catwalks of Marchesa and Missoni, to name a few. The new way to do tribal print is to go Aztec – bold, geometric designs with a solid color palette; whether that be monochrome black, white, red and blue, or a selection of on-trend color popping bright colors.

Style Tips: A tribal print jumpsuit is a real investment – it can be worn with some folky accessories, gladiators and a tan leather satchel for a laidback day look, and transformed with heels, a glamorous beaded or crystal statement necklace and gold cuff for an evening ensemble. Mixing prints is big news at the moment – mix tribal and animal prints by wearing a tribal print top and snakeskin print tapered trousers.

SUMMER 2011 / 19

Pleats

No longer are pleats something you would find in your school uniform, or worse, your grandmother’s wardrobe. Mini, midi (that’s calf-length girls) or maxi-a pleated skirt is a must-have summer essential.

Style Tips:

Stella McCartney SS/2011

Lanvin SS/2011

For prima ballerina, channel the Chloe look – go for a pleated midi or maxi skirt in soft pastel shades. Team with a tank top or simple tee and some ballerina flats. For Studio 54 glamour, go for high sheen metallic and jewel toned pleated miniskirts, pleated palazzos or pleated pussy bow blouses.

Denim

Celine and Stella McCartney took a fresh, minimalistic approach to denim for summer 2011. We’re talking about sharp, tailored, no-fuss denim pieces like collarless denim tunics, trouser-like jeans and, gasp, denim-on-denim.

Style Tips: Collarless denim shirts, tunics and shift dresses are key to this look. Team them with wide legged jeans, or so-called trouser jeans. For a sophisticated look, choose matching denim washes on top and bottom. This look can be changed drastically according to the choice of accessories. Folky leather accessories are ideal for a casual look while gold cuffs and gold filigree earrings can transform the ensemble into an evening-ready outfit.

summer essentials

Volume

Designers this season played with proportions in their collections– bright and voluminous maxi skirts were paired with simple tees and shirts at Jil Sander; YSL gave us puffed flamenco sleeves; while Lanvin mixed sexy with high glamour featuring skin tight bodysuits and sheer floor sweeping skirts.

Style Tips:

Fendi SS/2011

Lanvin SS/2011

Marc Jacobs SS/2011

If you opt for a voluminous maxi skirt or palazzos, make like the models at Jil Sander and opt for a simple tee, tank top or button down shirt. Never has a white t-shirt been so glamorous! A sleek pencil skirt and heels will balance out a blouse with wide puff sleeves and look oh so chic 80’s secretary. Is it a fashion faux pas to wear volume both on top and bottom? Not according to Marc Jacobs. Just make sure you wear a belt to cinch in your waist and create some balance.

Tangerine

If you wear only one colour this summer-make sure it’s a tangerine hue of orange. Summery and warm, tangerine has been the “it” color for several summers now and is a major hit with the fash pack.

Style Tips: Choose orange separates which you can mix with other bold colors for some ontrend color blocking, or pare down an orange top or trousers by teaming them with nude, black or white separates. If you’re bold enough to work the head-to-toe orange trend, make sure you wear a different coloured belt to cut up the orange block as well as a different coloured bag.

Peony Power

Orna Ballout ventures to the heart of Provence, in France, to discover the new L’Occitane peony plant inspired range and to meet the brains behind it all... The Plantations The first leg of my L’Occitane journey involved a visit to the peony (a beautiful Mediterranean flower) plantations to meet peony producer Jean Luc Riviere. It is in his nursery in Crest, North of Provence, that L’Occitane sources its peony extract, and whose exceptional range of peony flowers inspires the new Pivoine Flora makeup and perfume range. Riviere’s impressive family nursery spans over seven

hectares and homes more than 700 varieties of the peony – talk about flower power! In Ancient Greece, the peony was a famous flower, a symbol of feminine beauty and considered by many as a lucky charm. In the Middle Ages, the peony was cultivated for its medicinal properties; however, nowadays it is regularly used for its ornamental qualities, and is recognised by its distinctive rustic lingering fragrance. Usually, in the early months of

May, the peony flower blossoms in a dazzling display of colour and grace; unfortunately, due to an early bloom, the peony flowers weren’t visible in the fields (typical!) although Riviere did delight with an insightful peony lecture. It’s plausible as to why L’Occitane chose this whimsical flower for inspiration – the natural floral shades are reflected in the fresh packaging of the makeup range, and each shade used is named after the peony it reflects!

Flower Power: Peony Producer Jean Luc Riviere impresses with his extensive knowledge at his plantations in the heart of Provence, in France. 32 / SUMMER 2011

EXPERIENCE

Historic Retreat: L’Occitane established its first Spa at this beautiful hotel which boasts three centuries of interesting history.

Le Couvent Des Minimes Hotel-Spa After the peony fields, it was time to venture to mesmerising Le Couvent Des Minimes Hotel-Spa located in Mane, Provence, where I’d be staying for the duration of the trip. This impressive building boasts three centuries of history, and it is here that L’Occitane established its first Spa Hotel before eventually taking the idea global. The hotel’s decor is a perfect fusion of the past and present, featuring modern furniture with an antique touch. Here, I was absolutely pampered – experiencing tasty French cuisine, exceptional spa facilities and a wonderful ambience. The amazing Spa uses the best L’Occitane products combined with therapists’ expertise. I enjoyed an hour and a half of pure bliss

with a rejuvenating body massage followed by a tailor-made facial. My friendly therapist recommended a specific product range for my skin type and even gave me a little card with skincare tips and tricks. Perfume making session Next on the programme was an adventure to the Couvent des Cordeliers where the University of Fragrances and Flavours is located. On arrival, a brief tour of the university was given before being whisked to a lecture room to greet Sidonie Lancesseur – the perfumer behind the new Pivoine Flora Eau de Parfum, and, the lecturer of a two hour workshop to manufacture my very own perfume! Perched in my seat, I eagerly listened to Sidonie’s advice on how to create a perfume. The explanation

seemed simple enough, but when the time came to create, the measurements proved to be a little difficult! With a consortium of different scents dazzling in the box in front of me, I carefully selected different oils to make up the base, heart and head of the perfume. A chart was provided for guidance of what usually comprises the peony floral structure; sandalwood, white musk, white cedar, peony accord for the base; may rose for the heart, topped off with bergamot, grapefruit and cutgrass. I followed this structure, smelling oil before adding it to a glass container balanced on weighing scales – making sure to stay in line with the specific measurements (tricky part!). After this process, I then selected a few personal oils to differentiate my scent. I opted for chocolate and lots vanilla – yummy!

Scent of Success: Sidonie Lancesseur, the nose behind the new L’Occitane Pivoine Flora Eau de Parfum, gives a lesson in perfume making. SUMMER 2011 / 33

Behind the Scenes: A trip to the factory is great for seeing some bottling and packaging action; it also contains a large gift shop stocked with sweet smelling L’Occitane goodies.

Trip to L’Occitane Factory A brief walk round allowed a sneak peek into the fascinating action where L’Occitane products are created including laboratories, tube and bottling areas, soap and candle manufacturing areas and where all the labels are stored! The tour was finished with a brief talk from Jennifer Barachet regarding L’Occitane’s Sustainable Ingredients policy. L’Occitane is a

socially responsible company which strives to limit its actions impact on the environments, and never tests its products on animals. One of the notable sustainable development programs it has developed is in Burkina Faso – where the company brought together women’s cooperatives around the production of shea butter. The L’Occitane foundation (foundation.loccitane. com) is the arm which continues to support these

meaningful missions. L’Occitane prides itself sourcing over 200 ingredients of plant origin and essential oils, with the aim of creating the best natural or certified-organic products. After the Sustainable Ingredients policy, it was shopping time and a great opportunity to avail of a discount – needless to say I left the store holding a large shopping bag filled with sweet smelling goodies.

The makeup The Pivoine Flora makeup range is inspired by the peony – the flower with a thousand petals that puts on a whimsical show every May when it blooms, and the pretty flowers come alive as they seemingly dance and spin in the wind like ballerinas. The packaging of the collection reflects this vibe with pretty ballerina sketches adorned in peony tutus. It is packed with a variety of easy to apply products, all enriched softening Peony extract that glides on to skin with ease.

The Fragrance – Pivione Flora Eau de Parfum This new musky, woody fragrance wonderfully fuses the characteristics of peony with magnolia. Base notes consist of vanilla, cedar and musk; the heart features an intense scent of peony, magnolia and violet petals, while top notes round the fragrance off with bergamot and grapefruit – delicious! 34 / SUMMER 2011

Dinner with Olivier Baussan, Founder of L’Occitane Save the best till last is my motto – and this was definitely the case at an exclusive dinner hosted by L’Occitane’s Founder Olivier Baussan. Olivier’s awe-inspiring home, located in Forcalquier, Provence, was the perfect setting to meet the brains behind the prestigious brand. Olivier’s home is a grand renovated castle containing walls filled with tasteful, rare, spectacular works of art – something which has been a huge influence on Olivier’s life as a result of his artist parents. I was fascinated at how modest Olivier was about his success, and even more taken at how well behaved his Beauceron dog, Din, was; never before have I seen an animal so consumed by its master – Bin followed Olivier everywhere, sitting beside him throughout each interview just looking up at him with inquisitive eyes! Everything about the evening was splendid. Olivier’s friend, a gourmet chef who owns a restaurant in Mansoque, served up a storm with a feast of fantastic culinary delights, while Olivier reminisced on his L’Occitane journey which started with an old steam distiller and a van. Back then, Olivier used his knowledge on plants to create shampoos at his home which he’d sell at local markets, and this led to the founding of L’Occitane in 1976. As the business developed, Olivier knew he’d need a proper home for his business, and by chance he made friends with an old soap maker. This man instantly spotted Olivier’s passion, and as he had no heir himself, decided to give all his machinery and know-how to Olivier. On this chance meeting, Oliver recollects: “I think what struck me the most was how I felt like I owe this man something, and how I was really looking forward to seeing the factory progress.”

Latest Abaya collection from Al Mujhitaba

Abaya Trends and Tips

Amel Osman rounds up some of the Gulf’s greatest designers to uncover everything you need to know about the fashion of abaya. 46 / SUMMER 2011

he origin of Abaya has been traced back before the birth of Islam. It is a part of the rich culture and tradition of the Gulf. I knew of some friends who, at first visit to the region, thought that wearing the abaya must be odd and boring (like the cast in Sex & The City 2 !) but later learned to appreciate its elegance and the fashion that goes with it. With the growing economy in the Middle East also came the growing fashion industry. Khaleeji women used to shop only in the souqs for abayas for the best and most suitable fabric. These days they are spoilt with choice of shopping through known designers and retailers for the newest designs with different fabrics, stitching, embroideries and precious stones. Digging into the details of the Abaya fashion in the gulf, we interviewed designers from UAE, Bahrain and Qatar.

Amal Murad’s season’s collections are loosefitting in silky jersey, with large unstructured silhouettes and lots of draperies. For more info visit amalmurad.com

ABAYA SHOPPING Amal Murad, a fashion abaya designer from Dubai and creator of REDAA, is one of the Middle East’s most reputed designers. Amal recommends that when choosing an abaya it is very important to consider the occasion, age, season, trend, colours, forms and understanding of your own body sculpture. The occasion should define the abaya trend. “Wedding and evening abayas should be elegant and chic; Eid and lady gatherings colorful and joyful; daily wear and work time Abaya’s practical and comfy,” Amal reveals. Nowadays, many ladies opt to shop online for an abaya and this makes it extremely important to know

the exact right size and fit. “Look for merchants that offer a wealth of information about the products they offer. The best retailers will include in depth sizing information, detailed descriptions of each product, and high-quality pictures of every clothing item offered,” Amal shares. In choosing the fabric, since the region’s climate is hot most of the time, light and breathable fabric is highly recommended. Eco-friendly and organic fabric are new concepts that are also feasible options. During the short cold season, “it is always better to use fabric that has a winter look and feel.”

ABAYA FASHION IN QATAR In Qatar, the abaya market has been tremendously booming. Designers as young as Amna Abdullaziz Abdullah of H.NAR Abayas, a grade 11 student from Amna Bint Wahab High School started sketching and producing her own sets of abaya. According to Amna Abdullaziz Abdullah, Qataris’ tastes in Abaya fashion varies from one woman to another which would usually be according to their age and the surrounding environment. “The current trend in abaya fashion in Qatar is the thick black embroidery that covers all the sleeves and some areas of the body,”

48 / SUMMER 2011

Amna highlights. Age and religion are two factors which play a huge factor in choosing an abaya: “We live in a society that believes older women should focus on other things than fashion. Also there are many religious women who can’t wear colourful and remarkable abays as a result of their environment.” Amna believes that non-muslims can wear an abaya, “Of course. An abaya is a great solution to many women who find themselves in a dilemma of what to wear to work!”

This season Elham Hussain’s collections are open, loose-fitting, with design on either one shoulder, or in the middle. The Head piece – Le Turban bonnet, a French-inspired head accessory is a modernised version of the traditional turban. It covers the hair yet retains a certain level of style. facebook.com/elle.maison

ABAYA CARE Elham Hussain, designer of Elle Maison boutique in Bahrain shares the following useful tips:

Note: If the abaya is made of silk, it is better to have it professionally dry cleaned.

The classic rule with abayas is to wash them with shampoo only. This will help save the color. If the abaya have lots of detailed embellishments or bead work – then it is better to hand wash.

Ironing /Pressing: It is best to seek the tailor’s or retailer’s recommendation on the best way of pressing the recently purchased abaya. To avoid pressing marks, iron inside out then steam. For silk and chiffon, iron only and do not steam.

Washing the abaya: Lay the abaya on the floor on top of a large towel or sheet. Using a damp washcloth or soft damp toothbrush wipe at the dirt or stains. Place another towel on top so that the abaya is in the middle to absorb all water Hang to dry.

Useful Tip on old abayas: Use old abayas to store evening dresses in the closet. Unlike the plastic laundry cover, storing dresses underneath old abayas allows the fabric to breathe leaving it in good condition.

Distinctive designs, vision and hard work are essentials to success in the fashion biz; designer Selina Farooqui proves to Orna Ballout she’s got it all...

Selina Farooqui Feminine, cute and unique flair 50 / SUMMER 2011

t’s the dream of most fashion design graduates to be recognised for their design devotion – those late nights spent busy working on sketches, stitches, sequins and all that jazz. Blossoming Doha-based designer Selina Farooqui is certainly making her mark if the recent fashion showcase at W Doha’s E Wow Suite is anything to go by. The rising star was given the opportunity to showcase her collection at W Doha as a result of the Best Fashion Design Student Award she received at the annual VCUQ fashion show. The event enticed many to the suite’s surroundings to view and place orders of her coveted collection. Of Indian origin, the 22-year-old was born and brought up in Saudi Arabia before she moved to Dubai when she was 15, and after a year to Doha. Has fashion always been your calling? I used to make things as child, so creativity has always been a very important focus. I wasn’t really consumed by fashion when I was young, but as I got older I started designing accessories and it eventually evolved into clothing design. Are your parents supportive of your career choice? Yes, they’ve always been really supportive – my

FASHION

mum is like my helper; even my dad chips in whenever he gets the opportunity! They helped me a lot with the preparation for this event. Any opportunity I receive, they encourage me to take it.

I actually think it’s beneficial; as the industry is smaller it’s a bit easier to get noticed because you haven’t got that many designers competing. It’s also great as more people nowadays are seeking out pieces created by young designers.

Tell us about your collection... I make clothes that are very feminine, easyto-wear but fancy and detailed enough so that when you wear that piece that’s all you need (without accessories). A lot of my fabrics are sourced from India and I find the local fashion here very inspirational. My garments have an exotic, glamorous style that can be worn during the day and evening.

Is working on the collection consuming a lot of your time? I just graduated in May but this month has been absolutely hectic. I’ve been sowing and going back and forth to tailors this whole month. I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s going to be like from now on but that’s what I love – I can’t imagine doing anything else!

What’s your favourite piece? I love the three dresses I created for this event which are inspired by the interiors of W Doha – like the black marble work and purple colours. I love these dresses as they’re so pretty and easy to wear. I used rope detailing, black crystals, purple and magenta chiffon to reflect the W Doha vibe. Do you find it difficult working in Qatar because it isn’t a huge industry?

Describe your own personal style... Feminine and cute. Where do you see yourself in five years? Just working really hard on my brand and expanding throughout the region.

Bold, bold, bold colours – we’ve seen them in Spring Summer and this trend continues into winter. Jumpsuits are still hot for winter. Fur is everywhere – whether it’s small detail in the jacket or just a piece of fox fur around the neck. Kaftans are big – they are must-have piece in the Middle East as ladies here love to lounge in them.

However, for shoes it has to be Santoni because they’re super comfortable and trendy. For accessories, I love the shoes and handbags from Ferragamo for women. If I was choosing for my sister, I’d say Etro and Missoni because it has those wow colours and Lancel for cute handbags. And for my mum I’d choose Gianfranco Ferre or Ferragamo. Show of the season? From the ones I attended, my favourite has to be Etro. The fact that the trends of the season are bold, Etro gives that message already with its paisleys, cute bright colors. They cater to every age and to every style. When you watch their runway there’s that touch of elegant femininity that any woman can wear. They do comply with trends, however, they always have an identity and that’s what I love. Fall must-have? A day clutch is essential this fall. 22-year-old blogging, modelling and fashion designing extravaganza Carla Mallari tells Orna Ballout about her creative assets...

GLAM You’re originally from the Philippines, how long have you lived in Doha? I’ve lived in Qatar all my life – this is my home! You’re a blogger, fashion designer and model – what do you enjoy most? That’s very difficult to say, I enjoy doing them all! I like to blog about fashion because I love sharing my fashion passion with everyone. Through my blog nomad*(nomadstyle.tumblr.com) I have the chance to meet interesting fashion people in Doha that I never thought existed! Modelling is heaps of fun because it makes you feel glamorous and beautiful for a few hours. Fashion design is probably what I enjoy MOST – I love creating and I certainly lose myself in my own world whilst working on collections. Tell us about your blog Nomad* – do you think it’s something you and co-founder Ahmed will continue? It started a year ago when I was doing my internship in New York. A friend from university was also doing an internship there with a small Brooklyn-based street-style blog; her assignments involved attending various events and parties, taking pictures of stylish people and blogging about them! Thus came the idea for nomad*. I pitched it to my friend and co-founder, Ahmed, and he loved the idea too. We definitely plan to continue and expand nomad* as it’s a great way of promoting Qatar’s fashion scene and talent. Have you always been interested in fashion? Not really, art has been my first passion. I used to paint and set up art installations back in high school. However, when I got into university I started considering fashion. Out of the three majors offered at that time: graphic, interior and fashion, I felt fashion was the most creative and open-ended. Based on that and the fact that I don’t cope well with restrictions – I chose fashion! You recently graduated from VCUQ – what’s your plan now? I’m job hunting, running nomad* and developing a small collection to showcase and sell. In the long run, I’d like to do a masters degree. Of course, I’d love to run my own clothing line someday too. Tell us about the inspiration for your collection... My inspiration comes from my love of contemporary art. The prints I’ve used are based on original paintings I’ve done. Some of the materials used are old and unused clothes. I try to be as sustainable as possible. For instance, this cardigan is made out of three old turtlenecks.

spot light

I wasn’t a fan of turtlenecks to begin with so I decided to cut them into separate pieces and combine them to make this unusual cardigan that can be worn in many different ways. I also like the idea of taking an item you find unattractive and transforming it into something valuable. I’m still in the process of developing a new collection – once I’m content with it the public can purchase it. When? Hopefully soon! What’s your view on Qatar’s fashion scene? It’s rapidly developing; everyone is becoming more aware of it. Not many perceive a career in fashion design as just another tailoring job. It’s developing into a lifestyle and a form of business. It’s amazing to see people taking the initiative holding fashion events and supporting young designers. Share your best fashion advice... Anyone can wear any sort of designer or brand, but it’s confidence that makes the outfit. How would you describe your personal style? My style's pretty eclectic. I quite like the androgynous look – it makes me feel strong and powerful. I mix it up by wearing odd eccentric colour combinations and wearing pieces with a soft, silky texture to retain a bit of that feminine feel. I’m also a fan of the 80s – I think it’s hilarious how everything was oversized and kitsch, I love it! What will you invest in for A/W 2011? Something with a quirky print and bold colours. It’s great to see colour appearing back this summer and it has definitely continued over to the A/W trends. If you could be someone else for a day, who would you choose? Elsa Schiaparelli, it’s got to be her. Not many people know her outside of the fashion industry, but let’s just say she was the Lady Gaga of the 20th century and also Coco Chanel’s biggest rival. She was mad, highly creative and an innovative fashion designer. Her creations were completely out of the norm at that time as Art also inspired her. She shared a close friendship with Salvador Dali (also a favourite artist of mine), and they did plenty of collaborations together. I would love to step into her shoes, hang out with Dali and concoct strange and bizarre ideas together. It’s funny that I mentioned shoes...just a little fun random fact: Schiaparelli designed a hat that’s shaped like a shoe!

It’s actually made me more confident as a person I think. I’m not sure why that is. But it has.” Coming to terms with Hermione’s end: “She feels like an old friend of mine. It’s very freeing on the one hand and very sad on the other. It’s both, bittersweet.” On her latest Harry Potter read: “The moment that really got me was Dobby’s death. I was really weepy for that. Addicted!” On her fondness for fashion: “I think fashion is a great way to express yourself. It’s fun. It’s escapist. It can change the way you think or feel.” On trying to live a ‘normal’ life: “You have to trust people or you’ll end up bloody lonely. Famous & Fashionable Fleamarkets By Marlene Naickar

The Trend Train ventures to Waterlooplein Flea market in Amsterdam, St Ouen in Paris and Portobello Road in London to discover their vintage treasures

lea Markets or outdoor markets gained their conception from the bazaar meeting places in the Middle East. The name though is attributed to the Parisians who in the 1860s era called their open air bazaar ‘Marche aux Puces – which literally translates to Market of fleas, as the goods sold there were rumored to be infested with fleas. Whatever the origin, the name stuck and these unassuming and beguiling places are now the stomping ground for both aspiring and established designers looking for new season inspirations. Fleamarkets have been the birthplace for the eponymous Vintage look which is brought alive by designers like Anna Sui and the effervescent Vivienne Westwood.

Waterlooplein, Amsterdam The forecasted weather is sweat inducing heatwave, which in the Lowlands is an absolute rarity. But today, blue skies are promised with not a pocket of white cloud or rain. This encouraged an exciting, crowd pulling day at Waterlooplein flea market. Stand holders opening their little mini containers and piling the streets with decadent fabrics and colour; antiquated Delftblue’s pottery vying for attention with tarnished looking gramophones and moth eaten books – all this is characterises the atmosphere at Waterlooplein. However, what stands out more than anything else is the abundance of vintage clothing with its vivid pyramid of colours and textures. It is here that you can find all kinds of frilly lace romanced with floral murmurings as seen in Dolce and Gabbana’s SS/11; fresh and floaty white fantastic theme or the fuchsia inspired flower powered Disco Staying Alive moodboard of Marc Jacobs.

Dolce and Gabbana

Dolce and Gabbana used the ancient craft of lace, embellishing it with floral tweaks and silver and gold dust fringing. At times, even garage chic leopard print received a makeover with lace detailing. No-where else can these intricate fabrics be found than at flea markets.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs used the flower powered seventies for inspiration in his billowing kaftans, jumpsuits and decadent plum infused chiffons – embellishing that with large eye popping flower blossoms for a retro come vintage look; you could be forgiven for thinking this has come straight out of a market stall for all its vibrancy!

St Ouen, Paris Heading North on line number four, exiting on the Port de Cligancourt brings you to the not so quaint but rather buzzing St Ouen in Paris. At the outset, expect to find all the normal knick knacks from traders, but at the very core of the Rue de Rosiers is the Vernaison – tiny cobbled streets that resemble Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, housing authentic Parisian flea market treats! The wonderful and delightfully witty French lingerie designer Chantal Thomas can be found haunting these alley ways for inspiration. It is here she gains her creativity for her boudoir chic lingerie. From antiques to vintage clothing and detailing – all can be seen in her collections which date back to the 1930s. Most of the flea market stand holders in the St Ouen have exquisite taste and none more bespoke for vintage and fashion inspiration than the unit of David Roy tucked in Alle 1 in the Rue de Rosiers. An Aladdin’s cave of small little trinkets, one of the kind jewelry items, vintage Chanel, da la Renta frocks and YSL statement pieces. All this nestled in a plush boudoir interior, fitted with purple valise and floral prints etched on the walls –a perfect resting place for these vintage steals.

Portobello Road, London This is a landmark institution in London, set in the uber-chic Notting Hill, which attracts all kinds of people – from fashionistas to frighteningly trendy teenagers delving for prized vintage frocks. The Westway flyover near Golborne Road is a veritable treasure trove of classic vintage. Stall number 22 nestled at the Notting Hill Gate used to be flocked by locals and famed fashionistias for the wonderland of collectors pieces that its 89-year-old owner Mary Brown would hold, and this would include everything from a 1930s evening tulle dress to an ornate pearl and diamante Christian Dior brooch. On her passing last year, the auction house Auction Atrium has catalogued more than 250 pieces to go under the hammer later this year. It is clear, that people like Mary Brown and the detailed perfectionism held by David Roy, played a small part in today’s trend setting. This passionate addiction for things bygone play a memorable part in each seasons new trends on the catwalks – including Sarah Burton, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada.

New interactive beauty ads on iPad yield customized shopping tips Lancome and Maybelline have launched a new generation of beauty ads for the iPad, and L’Oreal Paris is to follow later this month, reports Women’s Wear Daily. According to the trade paper, as part of the mobile advertising service, users will be able to answer questions about their hair and skin in order to receive recommendations for customized products. Gwen Stefani’s Infallible Le Rouge commercial will also appear in the ad, as will tutorials and trend reports. Lancome, which is owned by L’Oreal, already released similar ads last month that featured the Tresor fragrance commercial together with the option to send personalized Mother’s Day messages, while Maybelline, another L’Oreal brand, went for a similar strategy to L’Oreal Paris, helping customers to find the right product. Digitally customizing recommendations is a growing trend in beauty, with more and more brands releasing shopping guides for the iPhone and iPad, such as Firmenich’s osMoz app.

Never-before-used ingredient makes debut in BeyoncÈ’s new fragrance

Eva Mendes sings with an orchestra for Thierry Mugler The French luxury house has released the making-of for its new Angel fragrance commercial, scheduled for a September release. In it, Angel face Mendes, who will portray opera singer Maria Callas in the upcoming biopic Greek Fire, sings The Windmills of Your Mind, a song originally performed by Noel Harrison for the 1968 movie The Thomas Crown Affair. Shot in Prague, the clip released on YouTube shows Mendes rehearsing with an orchestra and a singing coach, and explaining the choice of music for the campaign: “It’s so dreamy, and it’s all about where we go in our minds...when I just say the words, the images come to my mind certainly, and hopefully to anyone who’s listening as well.”

The singer premieres bluebird orchid in her new perfume Pulse. Used for the very first time in a fragrance, the flowery note will be joined by pear blossom, peony, midnight blooming jasmine, curacao, bergamot, musk, and Madagascar vanilla to make up the composition of the scent. The fragrance will be bottled in an upside-down chrome-and-blue flacon, inspired by Beyonce’s stage outfits. A print ad photographed by Lionel Gasperini and a TV commercial by Jake Navadirector of the singer’s Single Ladies music video and the Heat fragrance commercial are soon to be released. www.beyonceparfums.com

Kate Moss designs own makeup collection Seems as if merely starring in beauty ads just doesn’t cut it for Moss anymore: together with beauty brand Rimmel, she will release her own product range this fall. Rimmel, whose makeup has been promoted by the British supermodel for the past decade, said in a statement it was “very excited to announce our collaboration with our ambassador Kate Moss for a make-up range. Final products and packaging is still in the final stages of production and the line is due to hit shelves...in September. We plan to share more details of the launch over the coming months.” Rimmel London belongs to the beauty giant Coty, which also distributes Moss’s own fragrances; in addition, the model currently stars in major beauty campaigns for Dior’s Addict lipsticks and Yves Saint Laurent’s Parisienne fragrance.

Nail Volcano Chic! Karl Lagerfeld’s volcano-inspired runway for Chanel’s fall/winter show back in March was the perfect setting not just for his grunge-y clothes, but also for the brand’s metallic-shimmering nail polishes that are now available online. The sparkling-smoky grey Graphite that debuted on the runway models’ nails at the show is set to cause a stir, after previous launches (Jade, Particuliere) sold out in no time and later went for astronomical prices (up to $150) on eBay. Priced at $25, Graphite is joined by two other hues, a changing green Peridot and a mother-of-pearl Quartz. Since Chanel’s seasonal nail polishes are limited-edition, be quick to order online before the collection launches in stores next month.

Weir, who became famous during last year’s Winter Games, also because of his outrageous outfits like his furtrimmed Elise overland number, joins MAC’s flamboyant roster of spokesmodels including Lady Gaga, Dita von Teese, and Nicki Minaj. A male athlete might be a surprising choice to many, but the singer Elton John – known, just like Weir, to use the brand for his performances – has posed for its campaigns in the past. Weir is busy building his style empire, also working on new reality TV series Be Good Johnny Weir in the US. The gift of

fasting The Holy Month of Ramadan is an opportunity to cleanse the body and move to a more whole, natural and pure eating style. During your fasting period you may be tempted by an over-abundance of food choices (particularly sweets and processed foods) between sunset and sunrise, however with greater awareness of the benefits of fasting, commitment and planning, you can reap the significant physical gifts of fasting.

72 / SUMMER 2011

HEALTH & FITNESS

GLAM Why fast? Fasting is an opportunity to interrupt patterns and learn to manage eating habits to improve self-control and discipline to let go of food and substance addictions to slow down, breathe and chew while eating to eat more consciously, making better food choices to give the digestive system a rest to breakdown and release accumulated toxins from your body to increase your sense of gratitude for an abundance of food What happens when we fast? We fast every day! Technically the body enters a state of fasting eight hours or so after the last meal. Typically the longest time between meals is the time between our evening meal and breakfast (hence the name). During short fasts (after the body has used the nutrients from digestion of the last meal, such as daylight hours during Ramadan), the body will use glucose stored in the liver and muscles as the main source of energy, then fat becomes the next source along with small quantities of glucose which are ‘manufactured’ through other mechanisms in the liver. Only during prolonged fasts of many days to weeks does the body eventually turn to protein released from the breakdown of muscle (this is to be avoided). The use of fat for energy aids weight loss, preserving the muscles, and in the long run reduces your cholesterol levels. In addition, weight loss results in better control of diabetes and reduces blood pressure. A detoxification process also occurs, as many toxins stored in the body’s fat are dissolved and removed from the body. After a few days of a fast, higher levels of certain hormones appear in the blood (endorphins), resulting in a better level of alertness and an overall feeling of general mental well-being. Eat – when & what Suhoor – the pre-dawn meal. Eat slowlydigesting foods that provide energy for many hours (include whole grains, beans, pulses and healthy fats). Eat slowly, eat in moderation and choose high quality foods.

Iftar – the meal that breaks the day’s fast. Break the fast slowly. You want to gently reintroduce food into your digestive system. A small amount of food, such as a few dates or fruit, nuts and seeds, are a good choice. Follow this shortly after with a light meal of vegetables or salad, slow burning carbohydrates (such as beans and grains), lean protein and healthy fats. Iftar should remain a meal and not a feast. Choose these: Vegetables (whole & fresh pure juices) Fruits (whole & fresh pure fruit juices) Pure water & herbal teas Whole grains, beans and pulses Nuts and seeds Healthy fats (in moderation) Spices and seasonings Grilled, baked and steamed fish Optional – high quality animal products (such as organic meats and dairy) Limit or avoid these: Heavily-processed, fast burning foods that contain refined carbohydrates (eg: sugar, white flour, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, sweets) Caffeine Processed animal products (such as highlyprocessed meat and dairy products) Sugar & artificial sweeteners

Soda and soft drinks Deep fried foods High-fat foods Overeating Nicotine Gulping food or eating quickly TIPS Plan ahead – create meal plans in advance that focus on healthy food options Offer to bring a plate of food with you to social gatherings (where possible) Eat small amounts of healthy foods before going out to social gatherings Eat soups and salads at the beginning of the meal, keep processed carbohydrates and animal foods to a minimum, then if you are still hungry, have small portions of other types of foods Manage your food portions Commit to a healthy habits goal – decide this at the beginning of the fasting period what you want to have achieved by the end of the fast eg: more greens or fruit in your diet, included two new grains, learned to chew chew chew every mouthful, gave up soda and caffeine etc Save sweets and processed foods for once a week Create a support network – tell family and friends of your intention to eat healthy Ask a friend or family member to help you be accountable for your healthy food choices and check in with them at least once a week Drink lots of water and eat high water content foods (such as fruits and vegetables) to rehydrate your cells Keep a food diary – this will increase your awareness of what you are choosing to eat Follow these tips and guidelines, and remember that a period of fasting is not a time to shock your body by swinging from a famine to a feast. Fasting is a time to slow down, make conscious choices, reinforce or create healthy habits, connect with the purpose of food as nourishment, and to increase your levels of gratitude for the abundance of food in your life. This Ramadan give your body the gift of fasting and reap the rewards of greater health and wellbeing.

God is in the Details Orna Ballout hops over to Four Seasons Doha and realises it’s the little things that go a long way...

hen I think back on my luxury two night escape at Four Seasons Doha, what mainly springs to my mind is the hotel’s careful attention to detail – from the complimentary sunglasses cleaning offered on the beach – to the thoughtful bookmark placed by housekeeping in my hardback which I carelessly tossed on to the bedroom floor – it’s these small and simple touches which differentiate Four Seasons from a myriad of plush 5 star hotels. It’s hard to miss the hotel which boasts a prime position in Doha’s upmarket West Bay area, a stonesthrow away from City Centre. Its eye catching towering facade is topped with two intricate lattice work domes. When my friend and I check in on a humid Friday afternoon, we’re taken aback by the understated luxury of the hotel’s interior. A striking display of fresh flowers was first to catch my attention; during my stay, I noticed this 74 / SUMMER 2011

blooming marvellous display was changed daily to dazzle guests with an assortment of flowers imported from Holland. This floral touch was actually consistent throughout the whole hotel – as I soon noticed a vast amount of pretty vases scattered around maintained by the hotel’s four florists. All the interiors scream luxury – marble floors, bespoke sparkling chandeliers, unique furniture and an immense art collection by international

and local artists which I learnt amasses to a total of two million dollars. Don’t miss (not as if you’ll be able to), The Doves of Peace, a striking artwork by Iraqi sculptor Ali Al Jabiri located in the lower ground lobby. This beautifully crafted piece consisting of bronze birds towering above a water feature is a real showstopper. After numerous art distractions, I eventually made it to the room. A huge comfy bed, enticing mini-bar, L’Occitane toiletries and a balcony

with an awesome view of the beach and Arabian Gulf ensured I was going to have a relaxing stay! Having built up an appetite, it was time for brunch at the hotel’s restaurant – Brasserie on the Beach. Brunch has become somewhat of a weekly ritual in Doha; every Friday a group of friends usually head to a local hotel to stuff their faces from an all-you-can-eat buffet. As a Four Seasons first-timer, I’d been looking forward to tasting this tradition for quite some time. Brunch at Brasserie on the Beach is served between 12-4 pm every Friday and the standard cost is QR 300 pp, however it varies on what drinks you choose to accompany your meal. Juice and water suited me just fine. The range of hot and cold dishes promises something for everyone – think Lebanese Mezzah, Asian Specialties and Sushi Bar; it’s really got it all. Not to mention the cutest serving area for kids, allowing them to serve themselves with an array of different treats. After I could handle no more food, my next adventure was a trip to the hotel’s welcoming outdoors; a three-level grotto pool, 250m private beach all in the setting of lush landscaped gardens was the ideal setting to enjoy some sun, sea and sand. Cool wooden huts positioned around the pool provide guests with a perfect retreat to relax in comfort. As mentioned earlier, it’s the little

SUMMER ESCAPE SPECIAL

things that go a long way – the complimentary sun glasses cleaning facility, the fresh yoghurt juice that’s offered, and the ice-cooler stocked with water which is delivered to the sun lounger is an excellent touch. There are a variety of dining options at the hotel including the Pool Grill – perfect for a beach side bite; Il Teatro – offering a fine dining Italian experience; Apres Spa Cafe – great for a healthy nibble after a workout; The Library Bar & Cigar Lounge – good for Spanish tapas and drinks; Seasons Tea Lounge – a chic setting for English afternoon tea; Arabica – cool coffee bar serving global coffee and tea; and last but not least – in-room dining which offers a variety of choice. A visit to The Spa and Wellness Centre is must. The luxury three-story Spa features 11 treatment rooms, Hydrotherapy and Fitness Centres. Do make sure you arrive for your desired treatment early to avail of the facilities such as sauna, ice room, steam room and Swiss showers. I opted for the Summer Breeze Spa Package – running until Sep 15, this two hour 20 minute special packs in three treatments for QR 1,155, and is worth every penny. It starts off with an Organic Green Tea & Salt Scrub, which is really beneficial for the skin with its mineral rich and anti-oxidant properties.

After this, a soak in the Hydrotherapy bath is on the menu, ‘Fire Element Oil’ is added to the water to hydrate your skin. I was a little bit baffled to see a panic button in the Hydrotherapy bath, however, my therapist advised me it’s there to use in the situation where one feels a little bit hot. Do not be afraid to use it or inform the therapist if you feel this way. Although the Hydrotherapy is great for the skin, the fusion of strong jets and hot water can be a bit overwhelming and cause you to feel light headed – as I learnt firsthand! My near fainting episode was quickly healed with the final part of the treatment – a Sodashi Signature Earth Massage. The therapist used calming, slow stroking movements to relieve all my tension – the perfect ending. The hotel is currently running a special Family Getaway Package until September 5 – two nights including breakfast costs QR 1600, and for a little privacy there’s an option for a booking a second room at a 50% discount. All spa treatments booked with this offer come with a 25% discount. All in all, a summer staycation at Four Seasons Doha is well worth the money as it proves to be an opulent retreat, on your doorstep, offering the best fusion of sun, sand and spa. Quirky, warm and wow!

W Doha has an offer, and Vee Ess decides to give the Diva experience a go. Even if you are a regular, W will not fail to surprise you on every visit. There will be something quirky, warm or funny to discover with every visit, whether it’s yellow rubber duckies at the poolside bar, a kaleidoscope in the suite living room or funny messages in the restrooms, to giggle as you tinkle. This time around it was a beautiful, stillfunctioning Remington typewriter in the suite, that got me all nostalgic and teary-eyed, and more than a little relieved that I only have to use a soft-touch laptop. The combination of purple and black, and really innovative lighting, makes quite an 76 / SUMMER 2011

impact when you enter the W; it’s a big, warm, loud welcome. But the same combination in a confined space like a suite becomes very sensual: Black string curtain ensconced bed-space, a cosy living area, great music on demand, with good food, massages and a drink all a lift-ride away. The W suite has no windows. What it has is a floor to ceiling glass wall, and from the one I was in, the view was of the bustling West Bay on one side and the Lagoon on the other. When GLAM was invited to review the Diva package, I was a little intimidated – not for me Chihuahuas in a handbag or Naomi-like tantrums, because at the W, being a Diva is more

take than give. My partner and I reluctantly left the confines of the suite for a tea at the W Cafe before a session at the Bliss Spa. The evening high tea is obviously very popular, and I was surprised to see as many men as women partaking of the treat. I skipped the platter of sandwiches and pastries, and jumped on a cupcake. The cupcakes at the Cafe are easily the best I’ve tasted in the city, which is why on check-out we picked up a few boxes for friends, some of which actually did reach them. The red velvet cupcake is the signature one, we are told, but don’t stop yourself from trying out the rest.

SUMMER ESCAPE SPECIAL

What’s the W Diva deal? The package priced at QR2,660 per night (for a minimum stay of 2 nights) has a lot of goodies thrown in as well. If you are travelling into Doha, a private limo will transfer you from the airport to the hotel. Complimentary buffet breakfast for two at the Market, a box of Teuscher chocolates and Bliss deluxe body scrub treatment for the lady are part of the package. You also get a QR350 voucher to spend at the Salam Stores. Upgrade to a WOW suite for QR700 per night and you will get the services of a personal shopper as well. The offer is valid until September 30.

Scrubbed smooth Immediately after tea we headed to the Bliss Spa – a Hot Salt Scrub for myself, (QR450 for 60 minutes) which is part of the Diva package, and the man for a relaxing massage. Gorana, a physiotherapist by education, is a gorgeous Serbian, new to Doha, but quite a pro at what she does. She promised me that at the end of the hour, my skin would feel like never before. And she made good her promise, as she gave me a good rub down with what Bliss calls their ‘selfheating, sinus-clearing, mind-melting rosemary and eucalyptus oil sea salt scrub blend’. After the scrub and a shower, your whole body is given a once-over with the Bliss Body Butter. This is one product I highly recommend. The toiletries in the room are from Bliss, and included a bottle of this. Though a rather thick moisturizer, it is not even a bit greasy. It was dusk by the time we entered the suite, and the curtains were open to give us a spectacular view of the city; lit-up towers to the left, and the lagoon to the right. The uber-comfy cane and leather swing chair – tucked into a corner of the living area that afforded a view of both – was a much sought after seat. In-room entertainment, to our absolute joy, included a fantastic range of music on demand

– and because no effort has been spared to make the experience memorable – to be played on the Bose home theatre. Did I mention, quirky and sensual earlier? Well, there was more evidence to be found in the bedroom. The floor to ceiling windows continue into this space, and above the bed is a large copper-finished light-fitting hanging from a large mirror. Yes, a mirror. Lights dimmed, curtains open, and a view from the 13th – it could well be a Hefner for beginners’ experience! Let’s get spicy The Spice Market is one of my favourite restaurants in Doha; I love their lunch menu. Since I had been there for dinner only once before, we decided to dine there that night. The red duck curry we had for main course was delicious, and the lobster dumplings were quite a revelation. The Tom Yam could have been spicier, but then my spice tolerance level is far higher than most, and it was probably made for the regular palate. The icing on the cake, literally, was the dessert. Mango upside-down cake with ginger icecream! There are lots of dishes with kumquat – an East Asian favourite, but I decided to savour mine in

a drink. After dinner, Clara de Lama, the efficient and friendly communications manager, warned us against having breakfast, and to save our appetites for brunch at the Market by Jean-Georges at noon the next day. But since we were up rather early, we decided to have a light breakfast. We entered the packed restaurant at around 1 pm, where large groups of families and friends were making an afternoon of their Market visit. I’d advise you to do the brunch separately, probably when you are with a larger group of people. Frankly, we didn’t do justice to the spread, and were out of the place in an hour, much to the disappointment of the gentleman waiting on us: “You didn’t enjoy the brunch?” No, we did. We just were too high on the W experience to really have an appetite for a lunch that big. The Friday brunch is priced at QR320, and includes beverages. If you are not into buffets then maybe it would be a good idea to hit the pool-side and try the new menu at Wahm instead. Do check out Crystal or Wahm after dinner for some high-spirited fun. AROUND TOWN

GLAM caught up with the six designers to learn about their collections... Oro and Seta by Sandra Scaroni and Patrizia Russo “Our collection unites Eastern traditions and Western design which emphasises the affinity between the ancient and noble Eastern and Western cultures. It involves the use of contrasting materials, such as gold, silver, silk and Murano glass. By pushing the boundaries of conventional fashion, the dress becomes a sculpture, embodying both the aesthetic and the artistic emotions experienced by the human soul,” says Sandra. The duo – Sandra, jewellery stylist, and Patrizia, textile stylist – love to use new and exclusive materials such as 24K gold to make their elegant robes and abayas. They hope to touch the heart and soul of the Qatari women through their collection that is a fusion of Goldsmith’s art, Murano art and Textile art.

Alida Giordani by Tanya Vannicola, Andrea Bellumore and Marco Barbabella “In Italy, the Qatari market is important for our wedding fashion sector. This is the first time we have designed for Qatar,” says Tanya. The brand had designed a collection exclusively for ladies and children. “Each dress is handmade and is adorned with swarovski crystals.” Andrea added, “Apart from wedding dresses, we also create designs for women’s shoes and matching accessories (II Giardino dei Principe) and evening dresses, bags and shoes (Gruppo Quattro). We hope to introduce our high quality brand into the Qatari market through this event and reflect the fine texture, design, culture and fashion of Italy through our collections”. His inspiration behind those creations is his mother: “My mother is an artist and my creativity comes from her.”

Atelier Armonie by Alessia Bighi “Armonie in Italian means Harmony,” says Alessia who has been creating and customising wedding gowns for the past 14 years. “We design one exclusive gown for one bride according to her requirements. “We create our dresses using the finest fabrics, particularly silk. The wedding gowns are made using either double taffeta fabric – a light silk or mikado fabric – the most regal and heaviest silk fabric. Embellishments include swarovski crystals.” The brand also publishes an annual pattern-book ‘Marfy’ that features 250 new patterns. These patterns are sold to manufactures, tailors and distributors worldwide. Alessia loves travelling and exploring various cultures and she finds Qatari culture creative and inspiring. For this particular collection, her inspiration was the ‘butterfly’. But the collection is not exclusive for the Middle East. “Beauty doesn’t have borders,” she says. SUMMER 2011 / 85

GLAM New Designer Launch GLAM teamed up with WAADesigns for the launch of an exclusive Abaya range from up-and-coming designer Waad. The fashion show ‘QFashioneers’ held at Qatar Foundation lured many attendees to consume kooky Abaya fashion, while also picking up a complimentary copy of GLAM, which was the official media partner at the event. The range of beautiful embellished Abayas, all hand made by Waad herself, featured a mix of unique designs and bold colours. Careful attention was paid to detail – from the luxury french organza and Italian tulle fabrics – to the wonderful touch of ruffles. The show was mighty impressive considering WAAdesigns only started preparation three months ago with a collection based on the idea of ‘affordable elegance’. That’s exactly the case with this showstopping collection which won’t break the bank with prices ranging from QR 500 to QR 1500. On the collection, Waad shared: “As an aspiring designer, knowing my collection was being watched and judged by others was a terrifying idea! It was a dream I’ve always wanted but at the same time dreaded – however seeing my collection on the runway and hearing the applause was indescribable! I love my family and all my friends who helped motivate me and make my dreams come true.”

What is inside the cabinet Sonali Raman gets up close and personal with designers at stenden University’s fashion show and shares the 411...

Qatari designer Rodah Arbabi's designs wowed the audience at Stenden's fashion show charity fashion, ‘”What is inside the Cabinet”, organised by the students of Stenden to raise money for Dhreima Orphanage was indeed a commendable effort. The evening began at Katara with classical music entertainment from two violinists in a room tastefully designed in black and silver. The show opened with a collection of abayas from Qatari fashion designer Rodah Arbabi. Arbabi first started drawing designs when she was in school which were inspired by the region’s tradition and culture. “I combine European designs with the culture and traditional dress of my country,” she reveals. This 25 year-old designer, who has no formal training in fashion, is extremely grateful to the students of Stenden University, “I thank them very much for giving me the chance to have my first fashion show!” 88 / SUMMER 2011

Rodah makes modern style abayas with a unique selling point of an easy to wear factor keeping in mind the culture of the gulf, especially Qatar. The focus of the collection seemed to be on the cut and shape of the sleeves– one featured tone on tone crochet detailing and large bell sleeves; another was a take on Japanese kimonos with an obi belt on the waist and kimono sleeves; and another had large batwing sleeves and crystal tone on tone embroidery. A particularly lovely and quite unusual piece was an animal print silk abaya covered in a transparent layer of black chiffon. “This is my new trend for the season-coloured silk inside and black chiffon on the outside, so when a lady walks, you can see the touch of colour from the lining of the abaya” says Rodah.

Lebanese designer Joe Al Khatib delivers an interesting collection

Rodah was wearing one of her creations with large kimono cut-sleeves in bright coloured silk print contrasting with the black – elegant with a modern young twist! Although the collection presented was small, one looks forward to seeing the young designer’s next Eid Al Adha collection. Doha needs no introduction to designer Joe Al Khatib whose collection was next to walk the ramp. The gold medallist designer from Lebanon has been in Qatar for two years and has done twenty shows worldwide; he also is an interior designer and teaches community classes at VCUQ. “I was also a model in China for 4 years!” he reveals. “My inspiration for this collection is from the 70s – I have combined it with current trends to make it more contemporary. The 70s is all about decollete, ribbons, flowers and belts and you will see this prominently

throughout my winter collection.” Joe Al Khatib’s first dress on the catwalk was a stunner-a short cocktail dress in wine tulle, gold dots with a huge bow, train at the back and flower at the waist. A long evening dress in black and red velvet was also quite interesting, once again with a huge red flower at the waist. Another inspiration from the ‘70s was a chic black and white halter maxi in silk print. “I take my inspiration from the sun and the sea – from fashion history and costumes” says Al Khatib. A blue velvet strapless dress with a black belt, a short black velvet dress with a fuchsia flower at the waist, a purple velvet halter dress and an orange velvet faux jumpsuit dress made one feel that the designer could have used a different fabric rather than opting for a type of velvet similar to home furnishing.

The finale wedding dress collection was promising; Al Khatib showed a few beautiful pieces, one dress in particular stood out in light grey silver lace with a veil in tulle. Al Khatib likes the fashion scene in Doha and is ready to open an atelier as soon as he finds the right business partner. One wishes him all the luck and hopes his next collection features a larger range of fabrics to reach the full glamour factor. One thing was puzzling throughout the evening – the collection of each designer was shown twice and it wasn’t very clear why. However, the students of Stenden made a promising start in holding such an event, although it would have helped to have more professional models and a professional choreographer for the show. All in all, it was an interesting evening for a good cause. SUMMER 2011 / 89

What the stars foretell...

Mila Kunis Aug 14 1983; Leo

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Dear Aries, your outlook towards life seems to be undergoing a transition. Don’t try to resist it, because it is sure to bring some positive changes in your life. Don’t think too much about the past; what’s done is done. And remember, we can’t control everything, but can control our responses to what happens.

The interplay of planetary energies puts you at odds with your partner and may mean that neither of you are certain about what to expect next. All you need to do now is enjoy your differences of opinion and the diversity of interests you have. You will begin to see your partner in a new light and is sure to put a spark back into your relationship.

You may have to work at communication with your partner this month. Take time to discuss any issues that you have. Planets in Cancer will bring out your sensitivity and will inspire you to help someone by lending money or giving support. Overall, a very smooth month for you, Sagittarius but make sure you keep your expenditure in-check.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

This is a good time to think of a residential move. Whether you are planning to buy, rent or sell, this is a favourable month to do so. If renovation work or regular repairs around the house have been on our to-do list, then go right ahead instead of leaving it for later. You’ll be happy with the results.

This month, think out of the box when it comes to your career. Why not make your passion your vocation, after all? Lean on family or friends if you feel like you need help finding your new direction. They are bound to have helpful advice. You’ve been thinking for far too long now, it’s time to take that leap of faith Virgo.

Gemini

Libra

This month can bring wonderful expansion and prosperity for you if you are willing to compromise and work with others - something that shouldn’t be too difficult for you. Keep your eye open to what’s around you instead of staying locked on one matter only. It is also a favourable time to forge new friendships - at work or at social settings.

This month you have a ton of energy to get things done. You’re full of action and assertion, so it does no good to sit back and wait for others to open doors for you. You have the impetus and tools to get where you need to be. Talk yourself up without being too arrogant or self-conscious about it; it’s time people started noticing you.

You may feel like you have a split personality, thanks to the astral alignments this month. One part of you may want to deal with a certain issue in one way, whilst another part of you has all kinds of fears and emotions about tackling it at all. You need to examine your feelings closely to see exactly what they may be trying to tell you.

Aquarius

Cancer

Scorpio

Pisces

The month begins on a positive note, dear Cancer. You are in an excellent place, both mentally and physically, and you should enjoy every moment of it. If you haven’t planned a dinner party in a while, then it’s high time you threw one together. Casual is fine! Call up your friends and enjoy a great evening reconnecting.

As the month starts, it is definitely time for some super deep self-reflection for you. Are you happy? Are you unhappy? If you’re in a situation that isn’t working for you, why are you in it? Be honest. Be forthcoming. After all, even if you draw on counsel from friends and family, in the end only you can make these crucial decisions.

It is a busy month, but don’t forget that you need to be vigilant about taking care of yourself. Someone might try to overstep your boundaries, and you need to be strong enough to say ‘absolutely not.’ You're in for some seriously wonderful news towards the end of the month. With so many things happening around you, it’s of little wonder why staying fit is so important.§

102 / SUMMER 2011

Your planning skills are better than ever, so pitch in and help organise an event. Use the flash of inspiration to open doors and meet new people; anything that can help you to expand your range of possibilities. Make sure that your energy is open to new ventures. Chance meetings will open up new horizons.
