ECO-URBAN FLOATING MODULE Zero-Carbon Competition Project TYPE: Educational | Communal LOCATION: Machar Colony, Karachi, Pakistan YEAR: 2020
Slums are a neglected portion of society, people living well below the poverty line, with supply of basic necessities like water, electricity and sanitation often unavailable. Machar Colony is one of the most climatevulnerable communities of Karachi, with a population of at least 120,000 people. There are divisions within the colony based on origins or professions and this fragmentation leads to a lack of community spirit. There are no open spaces for children, or places to gather, which is especially a concern for women. Looking at the needs of the colony, a flexible programme has been generated for the proposal in the form of building clusters and open decks, housing a middle school, a women’s community centre and a men’s work area. The main construction material is bamboo and recycled plastic water drums. The building weight will be half supported by lime concrete stilts and half by the buoyant effects of the recycled water drums lashed to the underside within a bamboo truss frame when water levels are low. When the water levels increase, the structure will lift up and float completely free of the stilts. The proposal aims to generate a dialogue between the city and the sea, between the migrant population and the established citizens, between the less fortunate and the more privileged, bringing the natural and built environment on a closer footing, in the hopes of a more equitable future.

ANTIQUITIES A Contemporary Arts Complex + Urban Regeneration TYPE: Recreational | Educational LOCATION: Fort Qasim, Multan, Pakistan YEAR: 2018
A critical issue faced at present conditions is accommodating change to heritage places and adding new layers to their environment in ways that recognize, interpret, and sustain their heritage values. The project explores role of contemporary architecture in contributing to this change in ways that conserve and celebrate the special character and quality of the historic environment that communities have recognized as important and wish to conserve for future generations. Architecture can be used to manipulate and refine the characteristics of such heritage sites to produce serene spaces that promotes user interaction by enhancing the experience. A dialogue can be generated between current means of spatial ambiance and the values originated from the history. Multan, a center of cultural foundations is a city filled with spiritual heritage, poetic literature, folklore, mythologies and rich history. The old fort complex, that lies in the center of the city is the origin of the city. The richness in the historic value of this city dates back at the times of Ghandhara. Ruled by the various native empires, being surrounded by royal gates and lined with works of art, the complex has not been successful to substantiate itself in the present age. Rise in diverse programmatic affiliations to the context and lack of recreational zone in the city has forced public in accessing the heritage site as means of relief. Being renowed due to its eccentric shrines and yearly public usage that fort requires rejuvenation to establish itself as a manifesto for global identity. The site offers potential to explore the role of contemporary interventions in converting old heritage sites for the future regeneration. The project intents in the upgradation and unification of fort complex by translating the attributes of the historic site into modern architecture.

MUSEUM-CONTEMPORARY ARTS Studio Project TYPE: Recreational | Educational LOCATION: Machar Colony, Karachi, Pakistan YEAR: 2018
“In order to design buildings with sensuous connection to life, one must think in a a way that goes far beyond the form and construction” -Peter Zumpthor
Creating an architectural excuse for the people to leave behind their busy lives and experience the world of art and design. Natural elements can be manipulated to create moods within spaces and create a disconnection between human mind and physical state. Allowing people to indulge in sensuous journey of self-worth and realization that continues in various urban landscapes. The economy of Rawalpindi is interlinked with Islamabad and the two are jointly known as the “Twin Cities” The city has underwent countless overlaps throughout its timeline which has created a rich urban setting where no boundary can define its users, culture and architecture. The museum is to be designed in substantial urban context regenerating and re-inventing the site by making connection between new and old buildings.

23 Provision of consonance in context-Morphology, the idea of infusing multiple inanimate objects in order to transform its basic geometry. A shell that envelops the public space that celebrates the harmony in community. The function acting as a binding element both physically and metaphorically. For the project, the idea of biomimicry is applied to derive an outer shell the reflects the fluidity and flexibility of activities happening inside. A mulberry leaf is taken as inspiration to derive the final form, dynamic in its visibility and transformative to allow variety of functions and programs. F-9 Park, an existing example of public and semi open space in Islamabad invites people from all communities to interact and intermingle. The greenbelts of Islamabad have the potential to act as a barrier as well as a connection between two zones. Functionality targeting youth by placement near educational and recreational spots.
