Materiality Booklet

INTERIOR SPACE

This booklet presents a meticulously curated selection of the highest quality materials, sourced from all corners of the globe. The materials chosen reflect a core palette of ideas that this store needs to have different ‘zones’ for example: sufficient display space, a counter for transactions to occur, and some space to sit and contemplate and think about the day. All of these varying factors have to be individual in their aesthetic through their selected materiality; but need to fit and connect wholly. The materials chosen as the ‘backdrop’ for man-made still pay homage to the street-scape as well as reflect the store’s aesthetic, both conceptually and visually. The process required exploring various types of materials that were evocative of those found surrounding the site. Different colours, styles and composites of terrazzo have been used in abundance due to its impressive design qualities and artistic character. The process of crafting this terrazzo inspires the name ‘man-made’ for the store. The result is a punchy and provocative mix of Marmorino plaster, marble, sandstone, terrazzo and raw concrete. The idea is that each space you walk in to is completely different from the last, creating excitement through striking materiality choices. The store reflects on the current environmental climate and tackles issues of sustainability through material choices sourced and purchased in or around Scotland. ‘man-made’ is a symbol of expression and redefinition.

Purchased from Henry Van Der Vijer; a London decorative artist, bespoke surface designer/finisher & colourist. Where this can be found: Used to cover the interior walls on the main shop floor and staff room. Reasoning: Emphasises the material narrative of the space with the use of texture. Provides a bold background for the collections. 2. Chasea Terrazzo (Material Composition: Stone, Glass, Quartz and Porcelain) in honed matte finish. Thickness 2cm. Size 40cm x 40cm. Where this can be found: Used to cover entire floor space in the main shop floor and staff room. Reasoning: Mechanically polished without the use of chemicals to create a smooth, uniform surface, making it an ecologically-friendly material. Extremely hard-wearing despite continuous heavy footfall and minimal maintenance. 3. Calacatta White Marble matt unpolished finish. Thickness 10.8mm. Size 600mm x 600mm. Purchased from Topps Tiles. Where this can be found: Used to clad the interior columns. Reasoning: The natural detailed grain of the marble adds pattern and texture in keeping with the aesthetic of the store interior. 4. Cold-formed TECU Gold brass. Manufacturer: KME, Germany. Imported from Germany. Where this can be found: Used to clad the inside of the interior columns to create a sophisticated subtle detail of the shop space. The 20mm raised marble column exposes the brass detail underneath. Reasoning: As it is being used as a detail for the offset for the marble column, brass was selected because of its strength, corrosion resistance and ease of working and joining. This type of new copper-aluminium alloy oxidises very soon after it has been installed – gradually forming a striking warm golden surface which is still reminiscent of a valuable precious metal. 5. Mediumweight Chiffon Upholstery Velvet in Hunter Green, imported from USA Where this can be found: Used to upholster the chairs in the consultancy area. Reasoning: Adds luxury and sophistication. 6.
