Landscape Investigation

Bunker Hill Park Through a re-consideration of current site and contextual conditions, the goal was to re-strategize and re-envision a new urban park. The design incorporates a building that compliments the park by embedding itself or simply arranging itself in a contributive manner within the landscape. The design derives from the concept of active and static conditions that create a new urban landscape joining the contextual ‘flows’ and counter flows of the site. Advisor: Margaret Griffin

Plan. The building is intended to be used as a performance area for the surrounding community. The plan shows a stage that opens to the exterior for performance purposes. (top, opposite page) Longitudinal Section. The performing arts space creates both public and private spaces for the community. (bottom, opposite page) Model. The language of the roof is intended to parallel and continue the flow of the angular shapes found throughout the park. (top)

Morphologies-Programs

Los Angeles Ballet School The project explores programming as a means of generating spacial organization and form. The goal was to create a design whose play of program requirements allowed for a push and pull between interior (volumes) and exterior (form). In this case the program was that of a performing arts school, Los Angeles Ballet School in Hollywood, California. Advisor: Jenny Wu

Third Level. The third level is where the two major dance studios for the ballet school are located. The dance studios along with the performance hall are the pinnacle of the project. The performance hall cradles the dance studio, as it hovers above, as a symbolic gesture of the vitality of the dance school. (top) Conceptual Model. The physical model looks at the play between interior volumes and exterior form.

Physical Model. The design aimed at fitting in instead of imposing itself, in terms of mass.

Section A - Render. The form allows for interior and exterior performing areas. A central void allows a buffer zone between private and public spaces.

Static Systems

Chicago Union Station The project proposes the design of a new enlarged infrastructural node for high speed rail at Union Station in Chicago. Motivated by the rich structural and tectonic history of the train station, the proposal explores the relationships between structural morphology, urban movement, environmental forces, and other performative criteria. The focus is that of structural systems, performative envelopes, program and flow analysis, and the development of spatial conditions that create compelling public experience. Advisor: Patrick Tighe Collaboration: Eduardo Bellosta

Dynamic Systems:

Emerging Art Foundation: San Francisco The Emerging Art Foundation – San Francisco is a center for contemporary art that offers young artists a chance to debut, and incorporate their work into its collection. The architecture aims to create a creative space for artists and a place where art and the general public can meet. The design was conceived through the concept of “revealing”. In other words, delamination of the exterior to reveal the interior as a glimpse of the substance held inside the museum.

Vectoral Deployment

Berlin Central Station The project looks at the effect of line on form. Lines utilized are both physical, as in the train tracks, and suggestive, as in the suggestive lines found in the site as information. The intention is to take into consideration both physical and suggestive lines, to create a more prevalent relationship between the train station and the tracks themselves. In this specific case, the concept of these lines was explored through an alternative design for the Berlin Central Station. Advisor: Dwayne Oyler

Site. The site is located near the civic center in Tiergarten and adjacent to the river. 32
