Jen Gerber, our Library Director, would like to recommend the following titles: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, by Agatha Christie Roger Ackroyd knew too much. He knew that the woman he loved had poisoned her brutal first husband. He suspected also that someone had been blackmailing her. Then, tragically, came the news that she had taken her own life with an apparent drug overdose. However the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information, but before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death. Luckily one of Roger’s friends and the newest resident to retire to this normally quiet village takes over— none other than Monsieur Hercule Poirot. Although any Agatha Christie novel is well worth reading, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is easily Christie’s masterpiece!

Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark For all of you “Murderino’s” out there, the highly anticipated first book by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, the voices behind the #1 hit podcast My Favorite Murder! Sharing neverbefore-heard stories ranging from their struggles with depression, eating disorders, and addiction, Karen and Georgia irreverently recount their biggest mistakes and deepest fears, reflecting on the formative life events that shaped them into two of the most followed voices in the nation. The book focuses on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being ‘nice’ or ‘helpful.’ They delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness. My Favorite Murder started as a way for Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark to work through their fears. Now it’s a worldwide community. SSDGM!

Hope, our Collection Developer would like to invite you to check out this title:

The Library Book by Susan Orlean On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, "Once that first stack got going, it was 'Goodbye, Charlie." The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library--and, if so, who? Orlean chronicles the LAPL fire and its aftermath to showcase the larger, crucial role that libraries play in our lives; delves into the evolution of libraries across the country and around the world, from their humble beginnings as a metropolitan charitable initiative to their current status as a cornerstone of national identity; brings each department of the library to vivid life through on-the-ground reporting; studies arson attempts to burn a copy of a book herself; reflects on her own experiences in libraries; and reexamines the case of Harry Peak, the blond-haired actor long suspected of setting fire to the LAPL more than thirty years ago. ————————o———————— !6

UNASHAMED (RAHAB)

UNSPOKEN (BATHSHEBA)

UNSHAKEN (RUTH)

UNAFRAID (MARY) !7

Martin, our Collection Developing and Adult Services Coordinator would like to recommend these titles: I am currently reading Deacon King Kong by James McBride. “Deacon Cuffy Lambkin of Five Ends Baptist Church became a walking dead man on a cloudy September afternoon in 1969”. It has been said that some books can pull you in at the first sentence and this one hit the target from the start. Richly gifted author (and musician) James McBride starts with the story of the moment in which the before mentioned Deacon shot dead the local drug dealer known as Deems Clemens at a South Brooklyn housing project, with almost twenty people as witness. From then on, the book dives in a so far great exercise in storytelling as he presents an individual portrait of those directly involved and the ones who happened to be involuntary participants of this event, uncovering secrets, reasons and many other layers showing the complexity of human existence. Also by James McBride: The Color of Water, a Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. Sometime ago I read Mr. McBride’s memoir and tribute to his mother; his story of navigating life through poverty, drugs, violence, and eventual selfrealization and personal and professional success as a black man and the son of a mixed race marriage. A beautiful book and a much needed reminder to many nowadays that we should look at people for the way they walk through life and not by the color of shoes they wear.

Rita, Library & Patron Services Assistant , would like to recommend these titles:Â The science-fiction novel, Semiosis by Sue Burke (2018), is a first contact story. Humans, to escape a ravaged Earth, have traveled to a far-away planet, in hopes of sustaining human life. This book follows the colonists over several generations, as they face challenges cooperating with each other and with the dominant life form on the planet, sentient plants. Burke has published a sequel, Interference (2019).

The novel, The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri (2019), is a reminder that many things in life are beyond our control, for some more than others. Lefteri volunteered two summers in a refuge center in Athens and felt compelled to write this story, humanizing Syrian refugees, describing pre-war Aleppo and the great emotional, financial and physical costs to escaping Syria. Nuri, a gentle Syrian beekeeper, has a rich life of friends, a thriving family and happiness before war comes to Aleppo. He and his wife, Afra, desperate to survive, embark on a dangerous journey to find safety and peace in the UK.
