Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling In this hilarious instant classic, the creator of The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood. “[Kaling is] like Tina Fey’s cool little sister. Or perhaps . . . the next Nora Ephron.”—The New York Times Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?” Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly! With several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? proves that Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka. Martin, our Collection Developing and Adult Services Coordinator would like to recommend these titles: This wonderful exercise of imagination , tells the story of a fictional encounter by four major historical figures on their own right (Malcom X, Sam Cooke, Cassius Clay, and Jim Brown), being told in three acts that present a bold and direct perspective on race and politics but also on the human contradictions the main characters confront as they navigate what it was one of the most critical decades in American history.” An added plus to it is its soundtrack, available as well through the Monarch Library System.
One Night in Miami (DVD & Blu-Ray) Directed by Regina King , based on the screenplay by Kemp Powers. A fictional account of one amazing night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered discussing their roles in the Civil Rights Movement and cultural turmoil of the '60s. Are you looking to make changes in the new year? Your library may offer some guidance: If you need an attitude adjustment, The Midnight Library (2020), by Matt Haig, may be the book for you. In the space between life and death, Nora Seed is offered the option to live various versions of her here-to-fore painful and unsatisfying life. In this restyling of the Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, Nora comes to realize that different choices in her life may not have led to the outcomes she anticipated. As Nora lives the various iterations of her life, her prior regrets begin to vanish. The novel’s ending, while not a Hallmark-movie conclusion, is satisfying.
The Midnight Library is available through Monarch in large print, regular print, and audiobook formats, and through Libby in book and audio formats. Readers who enjoy this book may want to read The Comfort Book (2021) by the same author.
If you are looking to adjust your lifestyle, Oh She Glows for Dinner (2020) by Angela Liddon, might be the cookbook that will give you a quick start. This is the third book in the Oh She Glows vegan cookbook series by Liddon, and it contains easy, tasty recipes that vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores will all love. To make this book userfriendly, Liddon adds storage information, flavor/ preparation tips, and gluten- and grain-free options. The first recipe I made from the book, the “Cold-be-Gone Flavor Bomb Noodle [optional] Soup,” used pantry ingredients, took about 35 minutes total and was so good that I cannot wait to try another recipe tomorrow! Perhaps the “Sizzling Maple-Sriracha Garlic Chickpeas? Perhaps “Sloppy Glows?” Possibly “Dreamy Peanut Butter Crunch Veggie Noodle Bowls!” This cookbook makes eating healthy a pleasure. Liddon’s recipes are inspiring, and so is her attitude. She writes, “We can all get offtrack in life—you might have “off” months (or years), but if you can turn it into a learning experience, you are well on your way to coming out stronger than you were before.” Isn’t that great advice for the new year?
Oh She Glows for Dinner is available through Monarch in book format. Readers who enjoy this cookbook may want to investigate Oh She Glows Cookbook: Over 100
Vegan Recipes to Glow from the Inside Out (2014) and Oh She Glows Every Day: Quick and Simply Satisfying Plant-Based Recipes (2016).

Small Favors by Erin A. Craig "Enter not the forest deep. Beyond the Bells, the dark fiends keep." In a modern retelling of the 1812 German fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin, Small Favors reminds us to be careful what we wish for- it comes at a cost! Though written in an often idyllic, lighthearted fairy tale format with a specific and clear moral lesson to be ultimately unveiled, the bigger picture grey area encompasses a wider confusion of values leading to hasty actions lived to be regretted. Thinking before speaking, the importance of kindness at all costs, taking responsibility for mistakes made, and most importantly recognizing the evil of greed, which has been personified in deeply and darkly unattractive ways, are strong thematic threads throughout the book. Ellerie Downing, the main character of this book, is a beautiful, kind hearted maiden, coming of age, while struggling with opposing desires to either protect her family during the ultimate time of crisis or save the boy who has recently won her heart. "Small Favors is a mesmerizing and chilling novel about dark wishes and dreams and what lurks in the shadows of the people you think you know"...but never did .
The Dancing Girls by M.M. Chouinard This USA Today bestseller is the first book in the 4-part Detective Jo Fournier crime thriller series where nothing is quite what it seems. Fast paced and full of detail, the conclusion is a twist you will never see coming! With realistic investigative exploration, the author focuses full circle on the perspective of the detective, the Iives of the killer's victims and the point of view of the killer, himself, within an environment that exploits internet anonymity coupled with situational and psychological factors in creating the perfect hunting ground. The only question that remains in the end is whether the twisted and disturbing case will be solved before he kills yet again!
