Winners by Danielle Steel Winners is a very enjoyable quick read. The story is about a young girl who suffers severe spinal cord injury when the cable on a ski chairlift breaks. The lives of several people are changed forever following this accident. It takes the girl's father quite a while to accept that his daughter will not walk again. The girl’s neurosurgeon's life is forever changed as she experiences her own tragedy the night of the surgery. As the story unfolds, on their lives will also be touched by the interaction of these characters. Winners is a story of dedication to oneself and one's family, perseverance, courage, and the struggle to survive in the face of adversity. This book restored my enjoyment in reading Daniel Steele's books. I would recommend it.

The Sign on Rosie’s Door by Maurice Sendak Fans of Maurice Sendak's Caldecott Medal-winning Where the Wild Things Are will love The Sign on Rosie's Door—the book that inspired the Broadway musical Really Rosie, with music by Carole King! There was a sign on Rosie's door that said, "If you want to know a secret, knock three times." One day, Kathy, Rosie's good friend, knocks three times and learns the secret—that Rosie is no longer Rosie, but Alinda, the lovely lady singer. What follows is the story of real children, playing as only children know how. In a starred review, Kirkus praised The Sign on Rosie’s Door, saying, “Maurice Sendak, through both text and illustrations, fuses the appealingly familiar with the magical in a book of outstanding charm.” First published in 1960, The Sign on Rosie’s Door portrays children in their very real world of imagination as only Maurice Sendak can. CROSSROADS: The Life & Afterlife of Blues Legend Robert Johnson By Tom Graves “While brief, at only 133 pages, this very well researched and factual account of the enigmatic figure of Robert Johnson invites readers to submerge themselves into the depths of an obscure chapter of American music, coming out of it enlightened by the history of a single man and his bold influence in the history of 20th century music with legacy still echoing in musicians such as Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan among others. A must for any music history fan.”
Known & Strange Things Essays by Teju Cole With this collection of more than fifty pieces on politics, photography, travel, history, and literature, Teju Cole solidifies his place as one of today's most powerful and original voices. On page after page, deploying prose dense with beauty and ideas, he finds fresh and potent ways to interpret art, people, and historical moments, taking in subjects from Virginia Woolf, Shakespeare, and W. G. Sebald to Instagram, Barack Obama, and Boko Haram."-Description from publisher.

Do you need a January pick-me-up? A break from the continued stress of Covid? If so, peruse Monarch’s vast selection of music. Two choices that might perk you up are Béla Fleck’s brilliant, My Bluegrass Heart (2021, BMG label) and Ella Fitzgerald’s classic, The Best of the Song Books (1993, Verve label).
My Bluegrass Heart is Béla Fleck’s first bluegrass album in 20 years. On it, Fleck collaborates with other exceptional musicians, veterans and newcomers, including guitarists Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, fiddler Stuart Duncan, mandolinists Sam Bush, David Grisman, and Chris Thile, among many others. The result is a twoCD set filled with high energy virtuosity that fans of bluegrass and newgrass will all enjoy, and anyone who needs to feel light-hearted will greatly appreciate. “Vertigo,” “The Old North Woods,” and “Slippery Eel,” the first three selections on Disc A, will immediately lift your spirits and give you joy that will be sustained throughout the album.
Ella Fitzgerald’s The Best of the Song Books selections were recorded for Verve between 1956 and 1964 and were chosen from her eight Song Book albums. If it has been a while since you have heard Fitzgerald’s extraordinary voice, this album will remind you why she was called The First Lady of Song. From the swinging Nelson Riddle arrangement of “Something’s Gotta Give;” through the reflective, “I Got it Bad (and That Ain’t Good)” with the Duke Ellington Orchestra; and ending with Cole Porter’s poignant, “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye,” Fitzgerald’s voice is powerful, moving, beautiful, and legendary. Just marvel at her scat number, “Cotton Tail” by Ellington. Go ahead and listen to these classics from the Great American Songbook. You will be singing along before you know it!

Gardening Hacks 300+ Time and Money Saving Hacks Jon VanZile Great gardening resource! Written by the creator of the best selling nonfiction work, 'Houseplants for a Healthy Home', author and avid gardener Jon VanZile takes the same horticultural fun and flair suggested for in the house to the great outdoors! Whether you have a green thumb or you are just beginning to be 'garden inspired', this awesome selection of over 300 time and money saving tips has effective new ideas and techniques that make everything about the planting process simple and easy. Although I have worked at a garden center for many years, I had never thought of the clever idea of cutting up old sponges and putting them in my pots to retain moisture, create air space and prevent water flushing out the bottom. What a great way to reserve water and keep soil moist longer! Similarly, reusing plastic clamshells from salad bar takeout as mini greenhouses to allow sun and warmth to reach my plants while retaining moisture, or using citrus rinds as natural seedling starters for protecting my roots during the transplant process are super simple, easy and no cost ideas I can't wait to try! Sincerest thanks to the Ozaukee Master Gardeners for generously donating the funds to our Oscar Grady Library with which this book and other gardening related works were purchased. We are truly grateful to this organization that every year helps us to keep growing our collection for the community to enjoy.
