EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE by Daniel Goleman Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, Goleman shows the factors at work when people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do surprisingly well. These factors, which include self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy, add up to a different way of being smart—and they aren’t fixed at birth. Although shaped by childhood experiences, emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened throughout our adulthood—with immediate benefits to our health, our relationships, and our work. Hot to Trot (an Agatha Raisin Mystery) by M. C. Beaton This book is an easy read. I started reading while I was on vacation at Laguna Beach in California. The book became unputdownable as I needed to see who was the murderer. Once that question was answered, I was sure I knew the ending; however, I was wrong. The ending was not only a surprise, but it left me uncertain as to whether I liked this ending or not. At least the ending made me want to read a sequel as it raised more questions in my mind. I don’t think I had ever read a book by M. C. Beaton before, but I will look for more of her books in the hopes that they are as good as this one. I would definitely recommend this book, and now I will be looking for another Agatha Raisin mystery.
On the Street Where You Live by Mary Higgins Clark Do you believe in reincarnation? Think about that as you read this book. While on vacation, I read this book in one day. It surprised me that I could not stop reading, as this is not the type of reading I usually choose. This is a murder mystery connecting three murders 100 years before with two current murders which now mirror the dates and methods of those of the past. There are 11 days left until the third murder will occur, if it is following the pattern. The farther I read the more possible suspects I found. There are many twists and turns in the story and several loose ends are cleared up the end. I must admit, I was surprised when the real murderer was revealed.

An offer from a gentleman. by Julia Quinn The Bridgerton’s return for a third installment in An offer from a gentleman. The gentleman in question is the second eldest Bridgerton brother, Benedict. Unlike the first two books in the series, there is less of an emphasis on the social season, but still plenty of scandal. Readers are introduced to Sophie, the natural (i.e., illegitimate) daughter of an earl. When her father dies, Sophie finds herself at the mercy of her stepmother. Thus, in exchange for having a roof over her head, she is forced to work even harder than the servants in the house. Continues on next page
One night, when her stepmother and step-sisters are out, the rest of the household staff takes pity on her. Sophie finds herself whisked away to a masquerade ball, held by the Bridgerton family. The ball is all she could have dreamed of and more- she certainly never dared to dream of dancing with a Bridgerton. But before Benedict Bridgerton could learn her name, the clock strikes midnight and Sophie dashes out- dashing Benedict’s hopes of ever marrying, as no one could ever live up to his mystery miss. Will they reconnect? Will Benedict ever learn her true identity? If you have found yourself enraptured by the Bridgerton family saga, love fairytale retellings, or are just a fan of a HEA, you will have to read it yourself to find out!

Alex Trebek’s autobiography, The Answer Is… Reflections on My Life (2020), illuminates various events from his personal and professional life. The host of Jeopardy! for over 35 years, Trebek wrote this memoir after his 2019 diagnosis of stage four pancreatic cancer. (Trebek succumbed to that cancer in late 2020.) Filled with humor, The Answer Is… contains brief chapters and includes many photos. Trebek writes about his childhood and early professional work in Canada, as well as his family and television career in the U.S. Trebek’s generosity, humility, professionalism, courage, and love of family are highlighted in this memoir. Readers will learn Trebek worked with World Vision for over 30 years and also created a charitable foundation that contributes to his local homeless shelter, fights female circumcision in Africa, supports universities in Canada and the U.S., and has “adopted” a village in Zambia, providing it with a school, a medical facility, and wells. Trebek asserts, “My life has been a quest for knowledge and understanding…I’d like to be remembered first of all as a good and loving husband and father, and also as a decent man who did his best to help people perform at their best.” The Answer Is… should secure that legacy for him.

When the Light of the World was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through (2020), edited by Joy Harjo (Mvskoke), is the first Norton Anthology solely focused on Native Nations Poetry (from tribes within the U.S.). It was created to share poetry that has emerged from the rich traditions of the diverse cultures of indigenous peoples and their lands. Featuring 161 poets from more than 90 nations, the anthology offers a range of poems from the 17 th century into the 21st. Harjo’s introduction provides context for the poems included and also offers glimpses of the U.S. government’s impact on the cultures of the indigenous people. The vast scope of poetry included here is remarkable; until the passing of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act in 1978, cultural tribal-nation expression was outlawed. Harjo elucidates, “A poem can be considered a sacred site, in which so much of our culture is stored, made into form to be acknowledged, given a place, even a place to hide. Many of our oldest and most traditional poems and songs contain maps of the stars, road maps, or precepts of spiritual knowledge.” Readers who love poetry, love song, or who love history should make a point to explore When the
Light of the World was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through. The curated, lush poetry is moving and lyrical.
