The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
by Grady Hendrix Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia's life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these m e e t i n g s , t h e y ' r e m o r e likely to discuss the FBI's recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood. But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club's meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he's a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she - and her book club - are the only people standing between the monster they've invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community."--Provided by publisher.

Coming Out by Danielle Steel Coming Out is one of the simplest books by Danielle steel that I have ever read. It didn’t seem to me that it had much substance. This story is about a family in which both husband and wife have been married before. The wife has three children from a previous marriage and the couple then has a boy. The wife is converted to Judaism which is her new husband’s religion. Her twin daughters are invited to the coming-out ball. The one twin is very excited while the other twin is repulsed at the idea of the coming-out ball where some people are excluded. The rest of the story centers around how the family handles this situation. In many ways it is a very predictable story; however, there are a few surprises. I can’t say that I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone. It seemed very simplistic and predictable, even more so than Daniel Steel’s other books.

Love for Beginners (2021) by Jill Shalvis is a light love story. Emma Harris wakes up from a coma to find her fiancé and her best friend/roommate have fallen in love and have moved in together. Emma, a former marathon runner, needs help learning to walk again while finding a new home and figuring out how to start her life over. When her workplace is put up for sale, Emma starts a new business venture with a former “mean girl” from high school, Ali. Oh yes, and Emma is falling in love with her physical therapist, Simon, who just happens to be Ali’s cousin. If only the weather were nicer, Love for Beginners would make a fine beach read! Oh well, when autumn’s chill takes over and cold rain is relentless, escape by picking up this book and pretending you are reading it on a warm, sunny beach. The novel’s theme is seeing things from new perspectives and making changes to make one’s life happier. This positive message is welcome any time of year!
Love for Beginners is available through Monarch in large print book, regular print book and audio book formats and through Libby in book and audio formats.
My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver (2017, revised edition 2018) by former Wisconsin Governor Martin J. Schreiber is a slim book describing the author’s experiences as a caregiver for his beloved wife, Elaine, following her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Schreiber is frank about the difficulties of being a caregiver and also about the things he wishes he had known or done. The “What I wish I’d known” text boxes sprinkled throughout the book are very insightful and helpful. In the preface, Schreiber writes, “I felt compelled to write this book in the hope that relating my experience in caring for my Continues on next page
wife with Alzheimer’s disease would help other caregivers learn, cope, and survive.” He includes excerpts of Elaine’s writings, which provide her perspective as the disease progresses. This book is targeted toward caregivers, but also may be a good resource for people who have friends or loved ones coping with this progressive disease. Many thanks to the patron who recommended this book!
My Two Elaines is available through Monarch, in regular print and audio book formats and in a Care Kit, Aging/Disability/Dementia that includes additional information and tools provided by the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Dodge County.
The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism (2021) by Dr. Jen Gunter, OBGYN (author of
The Vagina Bible) Dedication: “For every woman. awesomeness is unrelated to your estrogen.
Your
The only thing predictable about menopause is its unpredictability. Factor in widespread misinformation, a lack of research, and the culture of shame around women's bodies, and it's no wonder women are unsure what to expect during the menopause transition and beyond. Menopause is not a disease--it's a planned change, like puberty. And just like puberty, we should be educated on what's to come years in advance, rather than the current practice of leaving people on their own with bothersome symptoms and too much conflicting information. Knowing what is happening, why, and what to do about it is both empowering and reassuring. Filled with practical, reassuring information, this essential guide will revolutionize how women experience menopause--including how their lives can be even better for it! Description from publisher.
