Debra Jo, Library Assistant and ILL Specialist would like to recommend the following titles: The Flat Share by Beth O’Leary Does the thought of sharing an apartment with a stranger make you uneasy? What if you never had to cross paths with your unknown roommate? Still squeamish? Meet Tiffy. She doesn't have a choice in the matter. What starts as a utilitarian and very unconventional means of stretching the almighty British pound evolves in a way neither Tiffy or her new roommate expect. The Flatshare is not only a quick read, intertwined with romance and relationships. It brings awareness to a few current societal issues while still maintaining hope and positivity. Available as a book, audiobook on CD, eaudiobook and ebook in the Monarch System. !3
Lynn, our Cataloging Specialist, would like to share with patrons the following title:
The Song of Bernadette by Franz Werfel Description from publisher: This is the classic work that tells the true story surrounding the miraculous visions of St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France in 1858. Werfel, a highly respected anti-Nazi writer from Vienna, became a Jewish refugee who barely escaped death in 1940, and wrote this moving story to fulfill a promise he made to God. While hiding in the little village of Lourdes, Werfel felt the Nazi noose tightening, and realizing that he and his wife might well be caught and executed, he made a promise to God to write about the "song of Bernadette" that he had been inspired by during his
clandestine stay in Lourdes. Though Werfel was Jewish, he was so deeply impressed by both Bernadette and the happenings at Lourdes, that his writing has a profound sense of Catholic understanding.

Martin, our Collection Developing and Adult Services Coordinator would like to recommend these titles:
Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia by Christina Thompson Either if you had already visited (or dream of doing so) the places that make the three points of the Polynesian Triangle (New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands, and Eastern Island), this is a book you may want to really consider reading. Mrs. Thompson extensive research together with an accessible use of language make for a very captivating read, as you are taken through the known history of the Pacific Ocean remote islands and their discovery by Europeans explorers, answering the questions to how the Polynesians were able to conquest and colonize the biggest surface of ocean in our planet way before Europeans even crossed the Atlantic.
Another book I am reading and enjoying is: At the Center of All Beauty: Solitude and the Creative Life by Fenton Johnson “He who seeks beauty shall find it”_ Bill Cunningham. In these times of so much interconnectedness, Mr. Fenton asks and offers an answer to the question of choosing solitude as a way of life. Using the stories of many luminaries from the literary and visual arts worlds such as Paul Cezanne to Eudora Welty as inspiring examples, we are presented with an image of what solitude can be and what it isn’t, and how choosing to be a solitaire impacts positively our creative endeavors. !5
Rita, Library & Patron Services Assistant , would like to recommend these titles:
200 Nights and One Day, Margaret Rozga’s 2009 book of poetry describing Milwaukee’s struggle for a fair housing law, is a must-read for anyone interested in civic leadership, civil disobedience, Wisconsin history and some of the backstory as to why in July 2019, Money magazine listed Milwaukee as the worst place for black Americans to settle. As an active participant in the marches for fair housing, and later as the wife of Fr. James Groppi, the leader of the marches, Rozga’s poetry authentically illuminates the efforts of the many, often young, people who risked their safety to finally bring fair housing legislation to Milwaukee in the 1960s. (Note: This book is not available on Libby or rbDigital, but is available in the Monarch system.)
I also recommend an ancillary resource, the documentary, Vel Phillips, Dream Big Dreams available online from the Library, through BadgerLink: https://pbswisconsineducation.org/vel-phillips-dream-big-dreams, a biography of Vel Phillips, the first African American and first woman elected to the Milwaukee Common Council, and her long journey to getting fair housing legislation passed in Milwaukee. Watch for the upcoming documentary on Fr. James Groppi, When Hell Freezes Over, from the Milwaukee-based creative studio, 11th Story.

Springtime in a Broken Mirror, by the late Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti was originally published in 1982 and has now been translated into English for the first time. This short novel takes us into the lives of a family fractured by the repressive military dictatorship that came into power in Uruguay in 1973, sending the main character, Santiago, to prison and sending his father, wife, daughter and friend into exile in Argentina. The author wrote this book when he, himself, was in political exile, living in Mallorca, and italicized chapters in the book appear to be the actual experiences of the author and other real-life exiles. As Santiago anticipates his release, his hopes for the future are grounded in his memories of the past. However, in chapters told from the perspectives of other characters in the book, we can see that the link from Santiago’s past (his home, his homeland) to his future has been irreparably shattered by political powers, time and absence. This moving novel reflects on the effects of love, time, separation and political upheaval on individual lives. (Note: This book is not available on Libby or rbDigital, but is available in the Monarch system.)

Working from Home! By Debra Jo B.
I was inspired to share pictures of my own roommates after writing my recommendation of 'The Flat Share'. My feline companion, Pepper Ann, is getting ample play time during Safer At Home. I've also had unusual, albeit temporary, roommates in the form of books. Processing of new items has continued ever since the library closed in March. Nothing can keep a librarian away from her books! !1 8
