UPCYCLING The aim of this project was to restore and recreate a product that was at the end of its life cycle. A bottle is one that has a 5 minute use. Converting that into something usable provides that second use.
DEVELOPMENT
Initial models aimed to get ideas out on paper to clarify a direction. Playing around with shape and materials to push ideas further.
Using a combination of materials seemed to be a running theme. Plastic was the most popular material.
Implementing a second component provided a multifunctional use.
Having this multifunction gives more to the product. Function over aesthetics is key here.
The combination of a torch and a lantern. This duel function gives the product an added dynamic function making it idea for people out and about or on the move.

HAND RENDER
The two functions of the bottle are to be carried in hand with the bottle cap off or to compress the bottle and place the bottle in the stand creating a lantern effect. For something like camping this is perfect as it means that you can go for a walk and take the bottle and put it in your stand when you get back.
Bottle Cap used for changing product from a flash light to a lantern
Plastic bottle, spray painted a grey or black. Need to be opaque so light does not spill out
LED at the base of the bottle producing glow
Stand is a simple design, light and easy to carry. Perfect for travelling. Easy to assemble.

CHRISTMAS The aim was to create a Christmas decoration. I aimed to produce a mix of mystery, class and simplicity to produce an upmarket decoration.
INITIAL IDEAS
I started out with the theme of playing cards, looking into how patterns could be created for a Christmas theme
Looking into snowflakes provided a brilliant mixture of detail and quality
Looking into snowflakes provided a brilliant mixture of detail and quality
Implementing detail and my own flair to create symmetric shapes which is the biases to almost all playing cards
Pattern will be used in later products to add Christmas element

DEVELOPMENT
By pushing the boundaries of the decoration as a starting point I made a playing card holder
To push this further I aimed to make a playing card holder that produced card after card after card
This aimed to combine the magic of Christmas with the magic of cards
By incorporating the box to cover the mechanism added the mystery back into the product
Using wood as a medium keeps the finesse of the playing card as well as the quality

SOLID WORKS
This is where the machine will be placed on the interior of the box. Enough to see the handle but without knowing the mechanics the product should just look like a regular box. The box will product chocolate playing cards with snowflake designs on the back. Having 25 will mean having one a day in the run up to christmas

FURNITURE The aim of the brief was to create a piece of furniture for a retail company. Taking inspiration from the company itself while adding your own personal twist to the product.
DEVELOPMENT
Initial inspiration came from the Donkey Penguin and the use of storage
Repetition and symmetry became a key feature. At this point my direction switched to a table rather than storage
Incorporating movable pieces to them combine them with graphical intricate shapes seemed to change the direction further
Providing depth added interest and another dimension to the project
Concluding with layering and pattern finishes off the development section

RESEARCH My own interpretation of what was needed in my project
Using Nature in my work. Biomimicry was the forefront of my design and the direction that the project ended up at
Words used to define Tom Faulkner as a designer and a company. These words need to be emulated in my final product
Thinking of best material. Using a mixture of the brand as well as my own idea’s produced either a metallic or wooden product
The spider web was a key proccess in the development of the project
Tom Faulkner table provided a clean quirky product to take inspiration from

PDP PART B This projected was about the knowledge and understanding of the consumer. The aim is to then design a poster or piece of advertisement to inform the user about problems in society

Luxottica vs Luxottica
TAKEN OVER BY LUXOTTICA IN 1999
Initial designs lead me to looking into big companies that are unethical and are cheating the system
Followed by the ex-partnership between that of Shell and Lego and how controversial that was
Came across Luxottica, direction of project completely changed
Lots of different aspects to pick up on the company. Then the project needed some refinement
Ended up playing with words and names, example above shows “cornering the market etc

DEVELOPMENT
= ALL COMPANIES OWNED BY LUXOTTICA
HOW WOULD YOU COMPETE AGAINST A BOARD LIKE THIS?
= ALL COMPANIES OWNED BY LUXOTTICA
IT’S BY NO CHANCE THAT THE SUNGLASS MAKET HAS BEEN COMPLETELY
HOW WOULD YOU COMPETE AGAINST A BOARD LIKE THIS? YOUR MOVE
YOUR MOVE
Luxottica was the route that was chosen.
Following on from this it was playing around with different graphics and heading to see what worked and what didn't
Taking influence from multiple sources such as war posters and campaigns to see what worked best
The challenge was to see if people could work out what a “Monopoly” in business is without spelling out
This should then inform the viewer and make them think about what they are actually buying into
Most sunglasses are manufactured by a single company, named Luxottica. The Italian company makes frames and sunglasses for an substancial list of brands and stores so is in complete control of the market

FINAL OUTCOMES
The Final outcome aimed to make people work out the Monopoly of the sunglasses market. But it can only be done when it takes that extra second of time to work out
Luxottica makes sunglasses for these
A monopoly is characterized by an absence of competition, which often results in high prices and inferior products.

A MONOPOLY IS ILLEGAL, HOW ARE LUXOTTICA GETTING AWAY WITH THIS?

IN SITU
Aim of the in situ board was to show the irony of the people hiding behind their glass wear yet Luxottica is a hidden company. By adding my in situ in the background of the images it just plays with how the company is hiding everything.
