JALAN THE

SULTAN CITY

MUAR ROYAL

SITUATED IN JOHOR BAHRU IN A SMALL TOWN CALLED MUAR ALSO KNOWN AS BANDAR MAHARANI WHICH IS THE ROYAL CITY. IT IS THE SECOND LARGEST CITY OF JOHOR AND IS RICH IN HISTORY WHERE MANY HISTORICAL RECORDS AND ARCHEOLOGICAL WORKS WERE FOUND HERE. THE NAME ITSELF MUAR IS BELIEVED TO HAVE ORIGINATED AND DERIVED FROM ITS GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AT THE MOUTH OR ESTUARY OF MUAR RIVER.

THE DISTRICT OF JOHOR THE SECOND LARGEST CITY AFTER JOHOR BAHRU BETWEEN BRITISH AND JAPANESE FORCES WHICH LEAD TO MANY EXISTING BUILDINGS NOW MOSTLY WITH BRITISH COLONIAL STYLES. SOME BUILDINGS BACK THEN WERE NOW RESTORED AND TOGETHER WITH NEWLY COLOURED SHOPHOUSES AND NICELY DECORATED PROMENADE AREA.

THE FLAT TERRAIN OF MUAR’S GEOGRAPHICAL GROUND AND AREA HAS ENABLE THE EXTENSIVE USE OF BICYCLE AND TRICYCLE VEHICLES AS MAIN TRANSPORTATION IN MUAR IN THE EARLY DAYS BUT NOW WERE SLOWLY REPLACED BY CARS, MOTORCYCLE AND BUS MAKING IT A BUSTLING STREET. THE NUMBER OF FOREIGNERS RAISED YEAR BY YEAR AND DURING THE WEEKEND, THE SULTAN STREET WILL BE OCCUPIED BY MOSTLY FOREIGNERS.

IN JALAN MAHARANI MUAR, THE PLACE IS SIMPLY FILLED WITH CULTURE VALUES SUCH AS MARKET, CLOTHING, CARPET, OLD SHOP HOUSES AND CHINESE GUILDS BUILDINGS. THERE ARE MANY OLD SHOP HOUSES AND CHINESE GUILDS AND ASSOCIATIONS BUILDINGS WITH UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL ELEMENTS IN THEIR STRUCTURE AND ARCHITECTURE STILL PRESERVED IN THE TOWN. WHEN YOU WALK ALONG JALAN MAHARANI, YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF WELL PRESERVED PRE-WAR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS STILL DOMINATE THE TOWN’S ARCHITECTURE WHICH BRING ONE’S MEMORY BACK TO THE NOSTALGIC YESTERYEARS COLONIAL TIMES AND ALSO THE PAST GLORY OF THE TOWN . BESIDES, MANY MAGNIFICIENT GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS WITH THE BRITISH COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE INFLUENCE ARE ALSO EASILY VISIBLE. THERE ARE COMBINATION OF OLD TRADITIONAL BUILDING AND NEW DEVELOPED BUILDING ALONG THIS STREET.

THE THINGS THAT MOST ATTRACTED ME IS THE COLOUR OF THE STREET. EACH STREET HAVE THEIR OWN COLOUR SUCH AS RED, YELLOW , GREEN AND THE BUILDINGS ALONG JALAN MAHARANI ARE IN BLUE. THESE COLOUR PRODUCE A CONTRAST BETWEEN EACH STREET AND ALSO DIFFERENTIATE EACH STREET. BESIDES THE HISTORICAL AND OLD TRADITIONAL SHOPHOUSES, THERE ARE ALSO SOME OLD REISDENCE WHICH HAVE A VERY ATTRACTIVE AND TRADITIONAL FAÇADE. THESE OLD TRADITIONAL RESIDENCES ARE AS SAME AS THE TRADITIONAL HOUSES IN PENANG. IT GIVE ME A FEELING OF NOSTALGIA AND FOND REMEMBRANCE OF TIMES PAST.

ON THE WAY ACROSS JALAN MAHARANI STREET, ROWS OF WELL PRESERVED PRE-WAR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS CAN BE SEEN. JALAN MAHARANI IS A HUSTLE AND BUSTLE STREET WITH RAISING NUMBER OF LOCAL AND FOREIGNERS MAKING IT VERY LIVELY FROM 7 AM IN THE MORNING TO EVENING TIME. THE STREET ARCHITECTURE IS DOMINATED BY NUNBERS SHOPLOTS AND ADMINSTRATIVE AREA WITH BRITISH COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE STYLES. AS PROVERB SAYS ‘DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER’, MOST PEOPLE MIGHT PERCEIVE THAT THERE IT IS JUST AN MERE OLD AND BORING STREET. BUT IF WE REALLY LOOK INTO IT, WE WOULD BE SURPRISE TO FIND THAT EACH AND EVERY SHOPS, ALLEY, PEOPLE, FOOD, ACCESSORIES, SOUVENIRS, COLORS, MAKES THE STREET UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS. UNLIKE ANY OTHER PLACE, MUAR STREET IS SPECIAL WITH ITS COLOURED THEME. THERE ARE 5 DIFFERENT COLORS OF STREET IN MUAR. JALAN MAHARANI IS THE ONE WITH BLUE COLOR THEME COLOR AND IS THE BUSIEST STREET AMONG THEM ALL. THE POPULATION IN JALAN MAHARANI MAINLY CONSIST OF MALAY, INDIANS AND FOREIGNERS LIKE BANGLADESH AND INDONESIANS MAKING IT A MIXING CULTURE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES.

JALAN MAHARANI DUE TO A LOT OF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY IN MUAR, THE RAISE IN THE NUMBER OF FOREIGNER SUCH AS BANGLADESH IN THIS FEW YEAR. WHEN WALKING THROUGH THE STREET, I CAN SEE A LOT OF FOREIGN WORKER WORK IN THE SHOPHOUSE. THESE WORKERS LEAVE THEIR OWN CONTRY TO HERE TO LOOK FOR JOB. I CAN SEE A LOT OF FOREIGN WORKER WALKIN ON THE STREET AS WELL. SOME OF THEM ALSO CYCLE ON THE ROAD. ON THE STREET, THERE ARE BUSES WHICH DRIVE THROUGH THE TOWN TO CARRY PEOPLE WITHIN THE TOWN. PEOPLE HERE OR FOREIGN WORKERS ALWAYS USE THIS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. PEOPLE HERE LIVE IN A SLOW AND RELAX MODE. WHEN I FIRST ARRIVE HERE, I CAN FEEL THE HARMONY AND CORDIAL FEELING IN THE TOWN, NOT LIKE THE BUSY AND BUSTLING CITY.

THE SIGNIFICANT MUAR IS FAMOUS WITH THE LONG ANTENNA AND BLUE SKY WITH WHITE CLOUD AS THERE’S VERY LESS HIGH RISE BUILDING THAT MAY BLOCK THE VIEW OF THE SKY. MANY LOCAL RESIDENTS FIXED THESE LONG ANTENNAS TO RECEIVE TELEVISION BROADCASTS FROM SINGAPORE.

THE BLUE AND RED ROWS AND ROWS OF BUILDINGS WERE PAINTED IN DIFFERENT COLOURS REPRESENTING COLOUR CODED STREETS. SULTAN STREET HAD A BLUE COLOUR AS THE STREET CODE WHILE THE RED ONE REPRESENT ANOTHER STREET.

HERITAGE MUAR HAS A RICH HERITAGE AND IS FAMED FOR ITS ARCHITECTURALLY-SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS AROUND LATE 1900S. THE AGE OF MOST BUILDINGS CAN BE EASILY IDENTIFIED SINCE THE DATES OF COMPLETION WERE CAST ON THE BUILDING’S EXTERIOR.
