Lion Match Products (Pty) Ltd has grown exponentially, since its inception in 2007, to include a significant range of leading South African household products. An iconic South African brand, the Lion Match trademark remains relatively unchanged since 1905 and is at the heart of The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd. Clean, shiny shoes reflect well on the wearer, and the act of polishing is a cherished family ritual. Consumers trust each application of Lion Quality Shoe Polish to protect shoes from water and scuffing; strengthen and restore the leather’s lustre; and provide a long-lasting shine.

Lion Safety Matches have been a symbol of national pride and a part of South African family life for well over 110 years. From birthday candles, to a warm winter fire or even a family braai, this ‘box of friends’ has come to claim a coveted space in hearts and minds as a bright beacon of warmth, trust and all things proudly South African.

Lion Firelighters are long-lasting, easy-lighting firelighters, packaged in a resealable bag, which keeps them fresher for longer. They provide a no-mess, convenient firelighting solution without any le over residue.

Lion Safety Matches are cra ed from sustainably grown pine on the company’s own plantations as well as private growers. At the megafactory in Rosslyn, we manufacture to strict safety and quality standards, which guarantees a quality match with a slow-burning, steady flame.

FIRMLY ROOTED FOR FUTURE GROWTH When The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd adopted a Tree Planting Scheme across South Africa back in 1922, it could not have predicted that by 2007, it would evolve into what it has become – a substantial independent forestry operation under the name Lion Match Forestry (Pty) Ltd. Historically, the timber of choice for Lion Safety Matches was poplar and during the early part of the 20th century the bulk of this vital raw material was imported from countries as diverse as Finland, Canada and Eastern Europe. In a drive to reduce its dependency on imports, the company purchased properties in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 1927 and the Lion Match factories were provided with poplar from the company’s own farms as well as from extension growers.

The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd established a new sawmill in 2015. Its function is to

By the early 1990s, the incidence of “rust” on the poplar plantations had severely affected the growth rate of poplar. This problem, coupled with the environmental issues surrounding the growing of poplar, resulted in The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd investigating other timber species, most notably pine, as alternatives for match manufacture.

EXP O RTS

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH AFRICA AND THE WORLD, EXPORT AFTER EXPORT The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd operates a dedicated Export Division to service markets outside South Africa. Favourable agreements see trade flowing freely between South Africa and the neighbouring states of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland (BLNS). These countries are therefore included as part of the local South African operation. The Export Division trades further afield – into Africa, South America, Indian Ocean islands and other countries. OUR BUSINESS With matches as its core product, The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd has commanded market share and traded across borders virtually since production began. However, changes in the global economy, currency fluctuations, complex regulations and evolving consumer preferences, have brought new focus to export opportunities. Africa’s “demographic dividend” has a racted a ention from multinationals as well as direct importers, making each country and indeed regions within each country, highly competitive and strategy-specific. The Lion Match Company (Pty) Ltd is well-positioned to take advantage of trade agreements and favourable exchange rates in the SADC region where it supplies Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. EXPORTS BRANDS With its export-only safety match brands – Zebra, Kudu and Lion Blue – the Export Division successfully implements marketing strategies specific to each region and country. Growth is being realised by a pull-through of Lion Match Products (Pty) Ltd and NSP Unsgaard (Pty) Ltd products. Further growth opportunities exist as the company’s product range expands and packaging takes exports markets into account. AWARDS The Export Division has won various awards for excellence over the years.
