“The challenge of managing coastal marinas today is the strength we gain for tomorrow. For every challenge encountered, there is chance for growth and prosperity. Halifax Harbor Marina, located in the heart of Daytona Beach, is a 550-slip, 60-acre coastal property and is one of the most prestigious and historic marinas in the United States -dating back to 1929. When the city managers decided unanimously to award the management contract to Marinas International, we were very pleased. We offer the proven ability to efficiently and effectively maximize the marina’s potential and offer a variety of member benefits. With four marinas in the state of Florida and countless others nationwide, Halifax Harbor members will now be able to utilize exclusive members-only perks by taking advantage of the transient dockage & fuel bonus program. In keeping with the high standards set by the city of Daytona Beach, Halifax Harbor will remain a favorite transit destination for boaters up and down the eastern seaboard, as well as the preferred marina for regional boaters. - Gregg Kenney, Marinas International

Welcome from Marinalife

The summer has flown by way too fast! I feel lucky that I was able to get out on our new 31-foot Pursuit, Marinalife, and enjoy the beautiful weather this summer in the Chesapeake Bay. Now, the Marinalife team is geared up for the boat show tour and we’ll be climbing aboard boats at the shows rather than my own. I am very excited about the Fall edition of Marinalife magazine, which features Women in Boating. We often hear about women in the workplace so we wanted to profile several women that work in the marine industry, along with first mate Cathie Trogdon’s experience on her cruise south along the ICW to the Bahamas. Their stories are inspiring and we easily could have dedicated an entire magazine to all of the amazing things women are doing in the boating world. The Marinalife team of women (see photo above) take our hats off to the women that are forging ahead in a traditionally man’s world.

12 marinalife.com

The Marinalife team had a busy summer (and yes, we did get out on the boat a few times for a much needed break). There are a few new features and benefits that were launched this summer. Marinalife has now partnered with several well-known national travel companies to offer land-based discounts to our Cruising Club members on hotels, rental cars, and even pet insurance. Check out the discount listings for the Wyndam Hotel Group, Avis and Budget Rental Cars, and Veterinary Pet Insurance. The newly designed and enhanced Marinalife Fuel Locator has been launched, allowing you to sort by prices (lowest to highest), ValvTect Certified fuel, high-speed fuel pumps and ethanol-free gasoline. This edition of the Marinalife Magazine is filled with lots of enjoyable stories including cruising in Southern California and the Top Fine Dining Waterfront Restaurants for a special occasion. Also, a long-term Marinalife member tells us about how to keep your growing children entertained on and off the boat. We hope to see many of you at the boat shows this year — we will be in Annapolis, Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Miami and Palm Beach as well as the TrawlerFest’s. Please swing by and say hello!

man-made yacht harbor in North America. Superlatives abound: It boasts 5,246 slips in 23 anchorages and marinas, 40 restaurants, and even offers funerals at sea. It is a wonderful boating community unto itself. For most yacht owners in Southern California, however, going boating for the weekend means sitting on their boat at the dock in Marina del Rey, sipping cocktails. Next weekend, be ready to expand your world beyond the marina by starting those engines and casting off your dock lines.

VENTURA, OFFICIALLY THE CITY OF SAN

Buenaventura, is a 40-nautical-mile run from Marina del Rey, so plan on an early morning cruise to give yourself plenty of time to explore what’s on shore. Ventura Harbor (venturaharbor.com) is the perfect port of call for visiting boaters. There are loads of restaurants, shops, markets and a full service boatyard, in addition to a selection of well protected marinas. The trolley service runs 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in 45-minute intervals (venturatolley.com). Once you’re there, the area is extremely walkable. The west end of downtown is anchored by the Old Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782 (sanbuenaventuramission.org). It was the last of the nine missions founded in California by Father Junipero Serra. Once you have soaked up the historic ambience, it will be time for a late lunch. A short walk from the Old Mission is El Rey Cantina, which is my favorite spot for tacos and tequila (elreycantina.com). I guarantee you will want to take home an El Rey T-shirt. Suitably fortified, you can spend the remainder of the afternoon shopping at a wide array of antiques, vintage clothing, and upscale shops. In keeping with our Mexican theme for the day, dinner at Maria Bonita is a must (mariabonitagourmet.com). This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area, and it will become your favorite for future visits to Ventura.

Although there are no marinas on the Channel Islands themselves, there are anchorages available. However, there are no public mooring balls for pick up. Santa Barbara

AFTER YOUR 25-NAUTICAL-MILE RETURN TO THE COAST, dock at Santa Barbara Harbor, a municipal marina with strong rock and concrete breakwaters (santabarbaraca.gov). After you tie up, stop by Brophy Bros. Clam Bar with great views of the harbor and the mountains (brophybros.com). A big bowl of their clam chowder, a half dozen little necks, along with an Arnold Palmer, makes a perfect lunch. Walk over to historic Stearns Wharf, home of the Ty Warner Sea Center (sbnature.org/twsc), where children and adults alike enjoy interactive exhibits and hands-on discoveries with sea creatures. When you go ashore in Santa Barbara, also take the opportunity to ride the inexpensive electric shuttle bus that goes from the waterfront to downtown’s State Street. Along and branching off this main street you will find an excellent choice of restaurants, shops, museums, and galleries. If your weekend on the water made you hungry for a steak, then indulge yourself with dinner at Holdren’s (holdrens.com), a classic steakhouse that is perennially voted the best in Santa Barbara. If you are not quite ready to depart, rent a car and venture into the coastal foothills of Santa Barbara wine country. The mountain vineyards grow classic grape varietals in an environment of cool ocean breezes and fog. This climate helps more than 100 wineries produce distinctive Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Remember the movie “Sideways,” and you’ll have the idea. While you are up in the mountains, stop in Solvang for breakfast. Solvang is a Danish-themed village with plenty of kitsch. It is a must—if only once in your life—to breakfast on æbleskivers: spherical Danish pancakes dipped in lingonberry jam and covered with powdered sugar. m l

PORT PERSONALITIES >

NANCY CAPPELMANN HARBOUR TOWN YACHT BASIN, HILTON HEAD, S.C. HOW DID YOU WIND UP IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY?

After college, I went to Colorado to ski for a season and ended up staying for a year and a half. On returning to South Carolina, and floundering about for a while, I called Harbour Town Yacht Basin to see if there were any openings. Having stayed on a boat here in high school, I thought this would be a great place to spend the summer and decide what I would do next. That was 33 years ago. I started as a dockhand, emptying trash, pumping fuel and docking boats. I stayed with it, learned a lot and now I am guiding dockhands through this process. IN A MALE DOMINATED INDUSTRY WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST DISADVANTAGE? ADVANTAGE?

I don’t necessarily feel like marina management is male dominated. There is an incredible amount of respect and helpfulness among marina operators.

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST USEFUL QUALITY YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO DO YOUR JOB?

Sense of humor. Ability to do at least three different things at once. Organization and leadership. Obviously not the ability to succinctly answer a question… NAME A PLACE YOU DON’T GET TO GO TO OFTEN ENOUGH?

My husband, daughters and I have a small cabin on the out island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. When there, we spend our time fishing, snorkeling and relaxing. Unfortunately, we do not get there often enough and hope to improve on that in the coming years. WHAT WARNING DO YOU GIVE TO BOATERS MOST OFTEN?

“Never go faster than the speed you want to hit something.” Also, the VHF or cell phone is one of the most helpful items on boat. There are so many things marina staff can provide boaters if they know prior to their arrival. This will help provide better service and improve the boaters experience. HOW MANY FRIENDSHIPS DO YOU HAVE THAT SPAN MORE THAN15 YEARS?

I am so lucky that I have so many real long term friends. From college, early boating days in Hilton Head, and fellow parents (soccer moms and dads). My husband and I have dozens of long term lasting friendships that we treasure.

DO YOU OWN A BOAT? WHAT KIND? IF NOT, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Our current boat is a 16-foot skiff that my husband built for me for Mothers Day back in 2000. It has a 15 hp. outboard and we go fishing, shrimping, and crabbing in the creek that runs by our dock.

WHAT IS THE NEXT THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO CROSS OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I would love to have more time for boating, family and traveling. I guess that’s what retirement is all about, though I don’t see that in the near future.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON A LAZY DAY AT HOME?

What is the definition of a lazy day? I do like to read and float in the pool on a sweltering day (of course, a frosty ale is very helpful also).

Abaco Beach Resort & BOAT HARBOUR BY ROBERT WILSON

B

OAT HARBOUR, LOCATED IN THE ABACO chain of the Bahamas, is a first-class marina and a favorite among sport fishermen and cruising enthusiasts. Guests enjoy all the amenities of the Abaco Beach Resort nestled on the southern shores of Great Abaco Island in close proximity to a variety of shops and restaurants in Marsh Harbour. Abaco Beach Resort has had a long history of being one of the best marinas in the Bahamas. Since opening in 1955, the owners and management have remained much the same. A legend in its own time, a storied tradition has developed for many families who return year after year. Here you will find 190 protected slips accommodating vessels up to 225 feet. State-of-the-art amenities include cable, telephone, free WiFi and two freshwater swimming pools. In addition, the resort has a beautifully maintained private beach, free use of water sports equipment and boat rentals, and diesel and gasoline fueling stations. For a memorable dining experience, check out Angler’s Restaurant, famous for its lamb. When locals are looking to celebrate or be entertained, the Bahamian cuisine prepared by Chef Charles is their choice. As you approach Boat Harbour, dockhands will secure your vessel and ensure that all electric and water supplies are safely connected. If this is your first port in the Bahamas, the staff can make arrangements to have Customs and Immigration meet with your captain at the marina. The staff are also known for doing

28 marinalife.com

everything in their power to make sure guests experience the best that the Bahamas have to offer. Marsh Harbour is the commercial hub of the Abacos, with grocery shopping akin to that in the U.S., though prices are somewhat higher. If you are interested in visiting the neighboring cays, Albury’s Ferry Service can whisk you away to Man O War, with its boatbuilding heritage, or Hope Town, where the historic candy-striped Elbow Cay Lighthouse welcomed 18th-century visitors to the island’s loyalist, post-revolutionary community. Ocean and harbor-front dining is abundant on both cays. But if you just want to relax, the pristine white-sand beach at Abaco Beach Resort is the place to be. The views are spectacular. The on-site gift shop stocks suntan lotion, sunglasses, and even bathing suits—in case you forgot a few items. No visit to the Abacos is complete without a little karaoke or rake and scrape music. Brown Tip, a local musician of note, entertains at the Boat Harbour pool bar, making it an exciting way to watch the sun go down while sipping on Kalik beer and munching on cracked conch. In Abaco, they say, “put a little sand in your shoes before you go home,” which ensures that you are certain to return to the Bahamas. For most visitors, an enjoyable stay at Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour is sufficient to guarantee that! ml Visit abacobeachresort.com for more information.

T

uCKEd AWAy On THE nEW riVEr in FOrT LAudErdALE,

Florida, only five miles from the ICW and a few miles from the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, lies a premier luxury resort: Marina Bay Marina Resort. This exclusive four-star property, opened in 1970, has the atmosphere of a private club, with its expansive amenities and facilities that are complimentary to all marina guests and crew. The marina has 168 deep-water slips and offers transient, seasonal and annual slip rentals for vessels ranging from 18 to 140 feet. There is a marine hardware store located 5 minutes from the marina stocked with fishing gear, boating apparel, provisions, and more. All type of marine services for your boat from electronics to engine dealers and haul out facilities can be found within a stones throw of Marina Bay Marina. Marina Bay Marina Resort’s friendly and experienced staff assists arriving boaters with lines and power hookups. The onsite concierge service makes sure guests have everything they need during their stay and can assist with car rentals, accommodations, and anything else under the sun. The resort’s worldclass amenities include a fitness facility with an air-conditioned racquetball court, state-of-the-art strength-training and cardiovascular equipment, and group exercise classes. Another huge bonus: a complimentary personal trainer visits three times a week. In the locker room you will find a laundry area, sauna, and spa. Take a dip with the family at the lavish outdoor pool and Jacuzzi complex, shaded by the lush palm trees that line the resort. And don’t miss the outdoor tennis courts. Your crew will feel right at home in the resort’s Captain’s

Lounge and 10,000 square foot Clubhouse, where you will find flat screen TVs, computer stations, and even a screening room with a library of movies and complimentary popcorn. The business center and Internet cafe can be reserved for meetings or conferences. When you are hungry for lunch or dinner and a cocktail, stop by the onsite restaurant, the charming dockside Rendezvous Waterfront Bar & Grill. Their Rendezvous burger is legendary, and their Rendezvous Voodoo is a rum punch like no other. If you care to explore the surrounding area outside the resort, some of the state’s best shopping and fine dining is just a few miles away. Check out The Galleria, where stores range from J. Crew and Neiman Marcus to Abercrombie & Fitch and Vans, and the dining options include Blue Martini, with more than 20 kinds of martinis, and the casually sophisticated Seasons 52. Nearby, Las Olas Boulevard, often called the Rodeo Drive of Florida, is lined with more than 30 restaurants and cafes, plus art galleries and dozens of boutiques. And don’t miss Sawgrass Mills Mall—with more than 300 shops, it’s the largest designer-brand outlet mall in the United States. Marina Bay Marina Resort is constantly improving and refreshing its facilities, and is currently installing brand new state-of-the-art floating docks. In 2015, they will open Maritime Wyndham TRYP at Marina Bay to provide hotel accommodations for transient and long-term guests. Whether you’re visiting for the night, a week, or all season, Marina Bay Marina Resort is the perfect destination getaway in southern Florida. m l

Hodge have been together, they have owned a boat and tried to spend as much time on the water as they can during the hot summer months. They cruise on Promises, their 42foot Grand Banks Classic Trawler in the Chesapeake Bay, on the weekends and take mini getaways each summer as far north as Nantucket. Charlie and Missy cruise with their two children, Layla (14) and Baer (11) as well as their canine companion, Mango, a 16-month old Golden Retriever. Each summer they find themselves switching up their “norm” to keep up with their kids getting older and their need for more action-packed activities.

ON BOARD WITH LAYLA AND BAER As the kids are entering their teenage years, it is more about keeping them active recreationally rather than watching a Disney movie in the cabin. They now both want to bring friends along and they want to be in the water — constantly active. Their Grand Banks, Promises is loaded up with toys: an inflatable stand up paddle board, two kayaks along with a couple of bikes. The crew often tow their 18-foot Boston Whaler with a center console for weekend cruising and shorter trips around the Bay so the kids can enjoy tubing, water skiing, and other water sports. With more experience, Layla and Baer will be able to captain the Whaler in no time! A wake board and a kneeboard are new editions to the Hodge family. And while Charlie and Missy are figuring out what binding is needed for their son’s wakeboard, the kids are venturing out and entertaining themselves swimming with Mango. No need to ring the dinner bell, the kids are helpful on board with cooking and grilling on the fly-bridge. They switch it up by heading to a local restaurant every other night to stretch their legs and get a bite to eat. To view this article and cruise online, visit marinalife.com/hodgefamily

CRUISING WITH

>

THE HOdgE FAMiLy

ON BOARD WITH MANGO “Anytime we’re cruising she’s on board,” says Charlie. Mango has been on board since she was 8-weeks old. Lifting the now 60-pound canine is not an issue and she has no hesitation jumping into the water (or even into their dinghy), often bypassing the swim platform so she can play with the kids in the water. Mango is the Hodge family’s first water-loving golden retriever. Before Mango, the family had Ophie, a 120-pound Newfoundland, who was way too large to comfortably have on board, let alone at anchor. Ophie was much more comfortable plopping down on the dock or staying at home on land under a big shady tree. Mango on the other hand is easy to handle on the boat and absolutely loves the water and the outdoor boating scenery.

WHEN THE KIDS ARE AWAY, THE ADULTS WILL PLAY! Every year Layla and Baer head off to summer camp in Maine. This leaves Charlie and Missy with time to take a more extended cruise up north. For the last four years, they have traveled on Promises up to the Block Island/Nantucket area for a 20-plus day cruise. This year, en-route to Block Island, R.I. they made an unplanned stop at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City Marina, where they have stayed in the past without leaving the docks. This year, after a day of bike riding around town, they took advantage of the resort’s rooftop deck with a pool, cabana and multiple hot tubs and left with every intention of returning next summer. From Atlantic City they cruised north past New York City to Brewer Capri in Port Washington, N.Y. where they fueled up and the next day ran the Long Island Sound to Block Island. Once situated in the Great Salt Pond of Block Island at a mooring ball (avoiding the craziness of the docks), the daily ritual is to take Mango to the beach for her 6 a.m. swim and run. After a leisurely breakfast, it’s time for their exercise. Charlie and Missy typically ride around Block Island several times, which takes them a little over two hours and includes great hills for biking. ml FALL 2014

DINING AT THE GREYFIELD INN (904-261-6408, greyfieldinn.com) is not a tryst but rather an ongoing love affair. Dinner is a casual yet stylish affair (jackets are required for men) served in the soft glow of candlelight. I

T IS FAR TOO EASY TO TAKE FOR GRANTED THE great variety of cruising destinations, anchorages and marinas that the Chesapeake Bay has to offer. As a local boater who has had the opportunity to cruise almost any area of the Bay, over the last 40 years, I must admit that I am guilty of frequently choosing some of my favorite destinations or marinas from past trips, over somewhere new or unknown. The Chesapeake Bay is probably one of the best and perhaps easiest boating areas in the country, with its easy-to-navigate sight-line and soft shoals — for those of us who admit to running aground occasionally — plus numerous beautiful anchorages and scores of great marinas, offering everything from historic towns or peaceful creeks to exciting entertainment and close proximity to big cites. I have been following the changes and trends in the industry closely and the trend has shifted, in recent years, from longer, multi-destination trips, to shorter cruises or simply spending more time at one’s favorite marina. Perhaps it’s the demands of work or a busier home life, or perhaps just the cost of fuel that has pushed this trend. However, the trend of spending more time at marinas has also encouraged marina owners to offer more amenities for the boater. Some boaters might seek a quiet, peaceful setting with golf or a waterfront restaurant, like Belmont Bay Harbor on the Occoquan in the upper

Potomac River or Fort Washington Marina on the Maryland side. For something a bit more exciting, there's National Harbor Marina, on the Maryland side of the upper Potomac River. This world-class property offers premium marina facilities, an amazing variety of entertainment and dining options, events and attractions. If destinations in the upper Bay regions are on your radar, visit Piney Narrows Yacht Haven at the Narrows on Kent Island; Crescent Marina at Fells Point in Baltimore; or Bohemia Vista Marina in Chesapeake City. Some very encouraging recent data of improving boat sales, higher boat-show attendance and increasing demands for transient and annual slips at many marinas, may indicate that we are experiencing a new period of growth in the industry. Currently we are helping with a few new marina development projects such as the major redevelopment of the Gangplank Marina in DC and Potomac Shores, a resort on the Potomac River that is slated to feature a large marina and Jack Nicholas signature golf course. Stay tuned! With so many exciting new and upcoming opportunities and destinations for boaters, the trends we see are all positive for those who cruise the Chesapeake. Cruising is still one of the best ways to spend quality time with family and friends. You could spend almost a lifetime exploring the waters and marinas of the Bay; try somewhere new next time you go cruising.

STEPHANIE Westbury dECK OFFiCEr

FROM AGE 12, STEPHANIE WAS SAILING single-handed dinghies and racing competitively

along the Welsh coast. Rolling her boat during a Winter Frostbite Series resulted in broken ribs, but even that only kept her off the water for three and a half weeks. Her first real taste of the sea came when she helped a local man and his crew sail to the Isle of Man in the British Isles. A bad storm in the Irish Sea damaged the rigging so badly that their voyage turned into a camping trip, and they slept in tents while repairs were done. Stephanie signed up to the Merchant Navy at age 18. After basic training, she spent four years on 262 foot platform supply vessels in the North Sea while also attending Warsash Maritime Academy. Her own words belie how tough those years must have been: “It was a very harsh environment and I never once had the company of a female. I only ever had male crews.” After obtaining her Office of the Watch, she joined a 394 foot/6,500GT Marine Aggregate Dredger. As the vessel emerged from the English Channel, the captain gave a happy "Cheerio!" and went below to his cabin, leaving second mate Westbury alone on the

bridge, solely in charge of the watch for the first time ever. She says she is glad she did not run over any swimmers in the channel. After years of hard work, Stephanie turned to yachts. “I was told by an agency that it was ‘extremely unlikely’ I would get an officer’s job onboard a yacht. I walked away more determined than dejected, because it wasn’t the first time in my career I had been told I wouldn't be able to do something. I am sometimes a rather stubborn ‘prove them wrong’ kind of girl.” Before her 24th birthday, she was chief mate on a 141 foot yacht in the Caribbean, later second officer aboard a 302 foot yacht in the final stages of her build. Stephanie says, “Right now I am feeding my passion for travel and adventure, but of course keeping my ears open for a whisper of work on another yacht! I intend to continue progressing up the ranks in the future. I can't say that I have seen many women in similar positions — it is still a male-dominated career — but there is nothing to say that can't or won’t change.” Who would bet against a “prove them wrong kind” of girl making that happen?

WHEN BRENDA WAS FOUR, HER PARENTS

James and Doris bought Baltimore Boating Center. She and her siblings did odd jobs for ice cream, and handed out flyers at boat shows. At 17, Brenda became parts manager. Customers couldn’t believe that a 4 feet, 11 inches, blue-eyed blonde knew anything about parts. They were truly mistaken. After the family business was sold, Brenda spent 20 years in marine finance. In 2007, she and her siblings took over the marina. The industry was in recession, and Brenda realized “there was nowhere to go but up.” She and her brother Jim rebuilt the marina, decided against selling new boats, and grew their brokerage. In the last decade, Brenda has seen more and more women making the initial contact about a new family boat purchase. She is thrilled that she has helped introduce so many new folks to boating over the years — she estimates more than 5,000! At the same time, she is saddened by listings coming in from aging boaters reluctantly giving up their family boating lifestyle. Brenda and Jim have been active in the industry, contributing to the Chesapeake Bay Powerboat Association, the Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County, the Middle River Dinghy Poker Run, and the Middle River Parade of Lighted Boats. Going forward, Brenda would like to grow the business so she can take more time off to spend on the water. That sounds a bit like an oxymoron, but if anyone can do it, this little lady will.

Since they married, they’ve worked on the same crews — currently he is the captain and she is the chef on the same yacht. She sees the makeup of crews changing. Once “inside” as cook, cleaner, or stewardess, women are steadily moving into “outside” crew positions. More crew agencies and owners ask specifically for women. Victoria has yet to find a port she doesn’t like. She loves asking market locals what to buy and how to fix it. She says she has learned more that way than she ever has from a cookbook. She has written about her floating culinary odyssey through Europe, the Caribbean, Nepal, Vietnam, Africa, and the South Pacific in her travel memoir, Sea Fare: A Chef ’s Journey Across the Ocean and her travel adventure, SEAsoned: A Chef ’s Journey with Her Captain.

CAPTAIN SALLY DIDN’T SET A GOAL EARLY

on to become a yacht captain — it was just the natural progression of her career. She grew up boating on the English Channel. After she left home, she managed a dive shop on Turks & Caicos. Four years after getting her captain’s license in 1994, she began to work on yachts. Sally travelled all over the world during the 11 years she worked for one owner. She finds it very exciting to go somewhere that’s inaccessible except by boat. She has been to places such as those in Alaska and the Caribbean that few people ever get to see. During her career, Sally has captained a variety of yachts — the largest was 200 feet. One port captain in France was very surprised to discover that the captain was a woman, but was immediately apologetic and polite. Sally has never felt any resistance in her career, and thinks that, as women, we are only “held back by ourselves.”

Now the mother of a toddler, Sally is doing short-term charter, relief, and freelance work so that she can be away for shorter periods and remain closer to home. Looking forward, Sally is keeping her options open, but is considering management. As much as she enjoys the ocean, it’s certain she will be at sea as often as possible. Although these women have unique stories, they share a genuine love of the water and several similar characteristics. Sally Wilkins says, “It’s scary being out in bad weather, so you try to avoid it.” But what they couldn’t avoid, they have weathered — storms, recessions, hurricanes, and personal hardships, and they have adapted in order to survive. They are all straight-forward, optimistic, forceful, upbeat women, and most of all, they each have a great sense of humor. In the words of Captain Sally, “You can either drive a boat, or you can’t.” ml

THEDestination:Virginia Virginia BAY LOOP BY JEANNE CRAIG

Some of the prettiest ports in the country are located in the southern stretches of the Chesapeake Bay, in eastern Virginia, where waterfront towns have both long and rich histories and the kind of laid-back lifestyle that appeals to those who crave a quiet escape. Cruisers come here for those peaceful mornings on the hook, with a light breeze coming slow and easy out of the west, blowing over a creek that’s glassy and calm. And there are ports in this region of the bay to suit different sensibilities. While the eastern side of this section of the Chesapeake is more clapboard houses and salt marshes, the western shore is colonial brick and rolling hills. Here are four great places to visit.

For an elegant wine to pour with dinner, visit one of the vineyards in the area such as The Dog and Oyster Vineyard, owned by Hope and Glory Inn. While you’re calling on these places, enjoy the southern hospitality that still runs in the heart of this community.

Located along the banks of Carter Creek on the western shore, a tributary of the Rappahannock River, it was once a popular spot for oyster pirates and hosted some of the south’s most distinguished families, from state governors to Civil War heroes. Irvington once thrived as a regular stop for steamboats carrying goods and travelers across southern Chesapeake Bay, which is why The Steamboat Era Museum is a popular stop for visitors; displays include models of ships and steamboats. Peaceful waters and quiet, leafy shorelines lure boaters to deltaville for a taste of the southern Virginia lifestyle.

DELTAVILLE, Virginia Deltaville has been dubbed “Boating Capital of the Chesapeake” for good reason. This beautiful, rural peninsula hosts 24 marinas and 10 boatyards. Its location makes it a popular home port as well as a convenient cruising destination. If you need anything for your boat, you can find it here: service, provisions, marine supplies, all served up with welcoming smiles. Deltaville residents take pride in their community and love to share a lifestyle of fishing tournaments, sailing races, local festivals and firehouse dinners. There are consignment and antique shops to browse on a lazy day in port and if you are in the mood for some touring, head for Deltaville Maritime Museum in Holly Point Nature Park. The museum chronicles the history of Chesapeake Bay watermen and its 36 acre park features outdoor sculpture gardens and a venue for waterfront plays and concerts. If you have time, see the tip end of Deltaville, called Stingray Point. Local lore says Captain John Smith was stung by a stingray here and was given the antidote for the bite by local Native Americans.

Some cruisers who have visited this former railroad town at the tip of Virginia’s eastern shore say it’s one of the Mid-Atlantic’s best-kept secrets, though a hot second-home real estate market in recent years has put it on the radar of more out-of-towners, so it’s no longer a place where residents know everyone’s name. Life is flip-flop easy, with bikes and golf carts sufficing for transportation and menus heavy with local seafood (this area is thriving with Little Neck Clam aquaculture farms). Start your day with a hearty breakfast from the Cape Charles Coffee House, housed in a beautifully restored 1910 haberdashery on Mason Street. For lunch check out Kelly’s Gingernut Pub, which serves lunch in a 106-year old former bank building. Save room for dinner on bistro nights (Tuesday through Thursday) at Hook U Up Gourmet where you can sample local seafood or indulge with a steak dinner that will easily fill you up. And for your sweet craving after dinner head down the street to the Brown Dog Ice Cream. Save time for shopping at the many boutiques and galleries on Mason Street and then head to the beach at the end of the street — this long, quiet beach is a great place for kids to collect periwinkles on sandbars. Cape Charles can seem charmingly rural, with oyster roasts at the historical society a popular community event. But there’s an upscale edge, too. The Hotel Cape Charles is a very cool, new, upscale boutique hotel in the heart of town. Golfers can play The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Bay Creek Resort. Enjoy the total Cape Charles experience and attend Fall Festival (October 11) with live music, artisans, crafts and food.

ONANCOCK, virginia Onancock is a hamlet on Virginia’s eastern shore, poised on a peninsula and surrounded on three sides by water. Here, the Onancock Creek courses for about five miles to empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Easy schooner access to the bay made Onancock a shipping hub as early as the late 1600s, and it’s proximity to the peninsula’s rail line kept that going into the 20th century. Today, the artists, entrepreneurs, retirees and tourists drawn to this small and walkable town still love it for the water, the open land that surrounds it, the leafy quiet and the wharf with its compact commercial district, which sends the friendly message that Onancock is also a working town. There are plenty of entertainment options in town such as the North Street Playhouse, the Roseland classic old-time movie theater (built in 1950) and a variety of galleries and boutique shops including Dawn, which sells everything from home furnishings to women’s clothing, and Willie Crockett’s art gallery and studio on Market Street. This fall, one of the most significant collections of antique maps and original Audubons ever assembled in Virginia is traveling to Onancock for a special exhibit at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society Ker Place Museum. You can visit Tangier Island by ferry from the marina, only a 4-mile trip that runs daily (except Monday) from May through September. There are plenty of great dining options in town from Mallards at the Wharf (with outside seating and amazing homemade crab cakes) to the Corner Bakery to satisfy your sweet craving (their cream puffs are to die for). If you want to get out on the water, you can charter a fishing boat, rent a kayak from Southeast Expeditions, next to the marina or drop a fishing line from the wharf with the locals. There is truly something for everyone in this small, friendly town. ml

UGAR WHITE SANDS LINE THE WATERS OF the Gulf of Mexico in Orange Beach, Alabama. Many of those who have discovered this little piece of paradise first come to enjoy those beaches. They soon discover, though, that there’s more to this town than meets the eye. In addition to its miles of coastline, there are an abundance of back bays, bayous, and rivers connecting Orange Beach to the world. Orange Beach is spoiled for options when it comes to water recreation. It’s well known as a deep-sea fishing hot spot, but there are also canoe and kayak rentals for exploring the city’s in-water trails, party boats to charter for offshore dinners and sunset cruises, and, of course, swimming in the gulf and lounging on the wide, powdery beaches to soak up the sun and be lulled by the waves. Once refreshed by the sand and the sea, visitors find plenty of other activities to enjoy. Inland, the Hugh Branyon Back Country Trails are network of paths that runs through more than 11 miles of the stunning woodlands in Gulf State Park. Wander through oak hammocks, over swamps and marshes, and along sandy dunes. Gulf State Park encompasses more than 5,000 acres and has a campground, nature center, beachfront pavilion, and one of the longest fishing piers on the gulf. For shopping, don’t miss Orange Beach’s eclectic collection of retailers and boutiques. Centers like San Roc Cay and The Wharf feature locally owned clothing, home decor, and specialty shops, while freestanding places such as Tallulah's Treasures and Prosperous Pelican dot the main streets of town and will not disappoint.

The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach sits on the shore of Wolf Bay in a 1920’s-era hotel, and includes a gallery that features the work of regional artists in a variety of media. Special exhibits spotlight works by visiting artists. There’s also an onsite glass-blowing studio and a pottery studio, and pieces from each can be purchased at the gift shop. Each spring, the center helps host the Orange Beach Festival of Art, a two-day celebration of arts and crafts, music, and food. Other events that bring visitors to the area include the Bama Coast Cruise classic-car show in April and the Blue Marlin Grand Championship Tournament in July. The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show, held in March, is the number one boat-buying show on the Gulf Coast. This past year, $90 million in boats and marine products were on display, including more than 125 in-water vessels. And everyone should visit the Flora-Bama Lounge — the selfproclaimed Last American Roadhouse — especially if you can catch the epic fish-flinging spectacle that is the Interstate Mullet Toss in April. The venue is a bit quieter during the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival in November. While in Orange Beach, visitors have an impressive array of lodging options. There are hotels, beach houses, and both familyaffordable and luxury condominiums lining the oceanfront as well as the bays. Information about accommodations, events, and other attractions can be found at orangebeach.com. ml

Florida! Gulfport, a hidden gem, is situated on Boca Ciega Bay, a southwest suburb of St. Petersburg. The town dates back to 1867, when Civil War veteran James Barnett and his wife, Rebecca, settled in the area with their family. In the early 1880s, Hamilton Disston purchased the land and renamed it Disston City, with hopes that the railway would pass through—but the railroad was only built to St. Petersburg. In the next six years, the name of the city changed several times until in 1910 it finally became Gulfport. Idyllic Gulfport is lined with historical brick streets and shaded by large oak and palm trees. Hop aboard the Gulfport Waterfront Trolley for a tour around town, and explore the numerous shops and restaurants. The trolley is offered on Fridays and Saturdays and is free to the public. BOAT

FIRST THINGS FIRST

THE RIGHT B Y B O B A R R I N GTO N

“It's also important to remember that even the “right boat” is not a perfect boat. All boats involve compromise.”

HEn PurCHAsing A BOAT, beyond buying a material object you are buying into a lifestyle. With just a little bit of studying, it's easy to see that different types of boats lend themselves to different uses. But to buy the “right boat,” you have to think about this in reverse order. In other words, particular types of boating are best enjoyed on particular types of boats. The more accurately you are able to define how you will use the boat, the more closely you’ll be able to match the boat to your intended use.

So how do you know how you will use a boat until you get one? Many people buy a boat after being introduced to the lifestyle by a friend or family member. If you decide to join them in their type of boating, you’re likely to buy a boat similar to theirs, which means you now have the perfect boat to suit your needs! If only it were so easy. Are you sure they had the “right boat,” even if they told you how much they liked it? There is a condition called “post-purchase rationalization.” It is a condition in which someone who has made an expensive purchase overlooks any faults in it in order to justify the purchase. Expensive purchases should involve careful research, and consequently many people who haven’t done enough research are reluctant to admit they made a poor decision. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask people if they like their boats — to the contrary, you need to ask as many people as possible in order to get a decent survey of honest opinions.

Will you be a day boater, rafting up with friends at a nearby beach or anchorage? Will you spend weekends cruising to nearby marinas and towns? Or do you plan extended voyages that nclude open-water passages? Beyond how you will use the boat, where you use it is equally important. Sea and wave conditions can vary widely between the open ocean of some of our coastal states and unique bodies of water like the Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, or the Great Lakes. Choosing the correct hull shape for your local conditions will mean the difference between enjoying a day on the water and wishing you were still safely tied to the pier. The development of local boat styles like the Down East Lobster Boat, the Chesapeake Bay Dead Rise or the Northwest Salmon Troller speaks to the importance of how hull shapes have evolved for local waters conditions. While these regional examples are all work boats, they have strongly influenced pleasure-boat design.

IMPORTANT QUALIFICATIONS The general process of choosing your boat is not exclusive to categories such as power versus sail, or subcategories like fishing or cruising. Size and cost are relative, not determining factors. Your decision should be based on style. Spending more money on a larger boat does not mean you bought the “right boat.” Small boats have crossed oceans, and good deals on used boats are plentiful. It's also important to remember that even the “right boat” is not a perfect boat. All boats involve compromise. The goal is to minimize the items that are not in line with your use.

THE PROCESS Boats are highly emotional purchases, charged with excitement and anticipation. It is difficult to be rational and objective in this process. After you've spent some time on a friend’s or family member’s boat or one you've chartered, make a list of likes and dislikes. Not just a mental list but a working spread sheet, with features on one axis and boat models on the other. Spend as much time as you can on different styles. Chartering or renting is a great way to do this. List features you enjoy or find useful under various models. Boat shows can be helpful, but they can also be dangerous, because each model is presented at its best in an unrealistic setting. When attending a show, try to attend on the slowest day or be there first thing in the morning. Even then, your only goal should be to identify the models you want to look at again in a non-show setting. Here is where your worksheet comes in handy or is further developed. How does each model compare against the features you've identified as important? Regardless of how much you

To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/buyingaboat

think you like a boat, how does it measure up against your worksheet? Many people will walk onto a boat at a show expressing interest in that boat, and four different peoples’ criteria for what they want out of that boat might not even be remotely similar. Many people can be dangerously close to buying the wrong boat. If they are serious and capable of buying a boat soon, they are prey to the manufacturer whose boats are displayed best or whose sales person is the most convincing. This is one of the reasons why so many good late-model used boats are on the market — someone who buys on emotion goes out and starts using their new boat, only to find out it's not well suited to the kind of boating they want to do or to their local waters. Once you've identified a few similar models that fit your criteria, search out owners of those boats and find out how they are using them — not how they like them, but how they are using them. If they are using them the same as you intend, you're likely heading in the right direction. This is easier than ever today through the internet. Many brands have owners clubs, with websites where you can post questions to owners. Many boat styles have developed clubs for that style, like Trawler Forum, Cruisers Forum, or Saltwater Sportsman for Center Consoles. These website forums are a great resource for finding differing opinions to factor into your decision. Remember: First things first, define your intended use, then follow the process down a narrowing path towards buying the “right boat.” There is nothing more satisfying than attending a boat show after a successful purchase, knowing that there isn’t a boat there you want more than the one you have. ml Capt. my skin like I was sitting in a bowl of conch chowder. There wasn’t a ripple on the water that wound its way through the river of grass, nor a sway of breeze through the bright green saw grasses. Great blue herons stood stock-still sentinel over the scene. The only things moving through the sludge of mid-afternoon August air in South Florida were the mosquitoes. “Why are we doing this again?” My husband, Patrick, hissed in my ear, sounding awfully similar to the annoying buzz of the aforementioned mosquitoes. “Because I love the Everglades tours, and your family hasn’t been out here before.” I looked over at his young down-to-visit-from-the-North niece, Fay, and nephew, Sean, and wondered if in winter, when bundled up in snow jackets and mittens, they’d ever dreamed of touring the swamps of Florida, flying over the knee-high water in an airboat with cotton buds shoved in their ears to drown out the noise, in search of Florida’s most primitive resident: gators. The wide smiles that lit their faces told of their excitement. The look on Patrick’s told just how far from our regular life on the water as captain and chef of a multi-million dollar yacht today’s boating adventure really was. Billy Bob (I swear that was his name) slowed the boat from his perch on the high seat above and behind us and drifted toward the reeds. He pointed a weathered finger at a spot just behind a log half-submerged in the muck. “This one here we call Alice.” His Seminole Indian drawl strung the words out to sound more like a paragraph than a sentence. Fay’s knuckles whitened as she gripped the metal seat. Sean’s eyes widened as he leaned out farther over the edge. Both kids spoke at the same time: “Cool!” Alice was a twelve-foot, aged-leather-looking monster with teeth the size of shot glasses and whiskey-colored slits for eyes. She barely acknowledged the beat-up aluminum airboat drifting past her. She didn’t even blink when the cameras started clicking. It was too hot to even submerge and swim away. “Any day now we ‘spect to see Alice’s babies swimming ‘round here,” Billy Bob explained, noting that each breeding female laid forty to fifty eggs. Fay’s eyes lit up. “Babies?”

For the gator Bites: 1/2  teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning 1  teaspoon sea salt 1/4  cup flour 1  pound alligator tail, cleaned and cut into 2 inch-thick medallions 1/4  cup olive oil

For the citrus vinaigrette: 2  oranges, segmented and juiced 1  grapefruit, segmented and juiced 1  lemon, juiced 4  Key limes, juiced 1  shallot, minced fine 1/3  cup extra-virgin olive oil 1  tablespoon Italian parsley, chopped Sea salt and pepper To view this recipe online, visit marinalife.com/gatorbites

For the salad: 4  cups arugula 1  cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half

GATOR BITES (SERVES 4)

1 2 3 4 5

In a small bowl, mix the Old Bay, sea salt, and flour. Dust the gator medallions with the mix. Heat a heavy-bottomed frying pan over medium-high heat. Add half the olive oil to the pan to coat the bottom. Gently place half the gator on the pan’s surface, taking care not to overcrowd the pan. Sear for 2 minutes. Using a soft spatula, flip the gator over and cook for 5 more minutes, until the alligator is firm to the touch.

Set the alligator on a paper towel, use the remaining oil to recoat the pan, and cook the rest of the alligator.

Meanwhile, combine the orange, grapefruit, lemon, and Key lime juices in a saucepan, and simmer over moderate heat until reduced by half, about 10 minutes. Pour into a bowl with the orange and grapefruit segments. Whisk in the shallot, olive oil, and Italian parsley. Season with salt and pepper.

Divide the gator bites among 4 plates and top with the warm vinaigrette, leaving 2 tablespoons of vinaigrette in a large bowl.

Toss the rest of the citrus vinaigrette and cherry tomatoes with the arugula. Season with salt and pepper and place on top of the gator bites.

The roar of the fan behind us drowned out her next question: “Can we take one home?” As we headed back to the dock, I wondered if she’d be as excited if we saw one of the seventeen-foot Burmese pythons that had recently invaded the area. “How about lunch?” I asked in hopes of distracting her from her quest of making Alice’s offspring a pet. “There’s gator bites at the restaurant down the road,” Billy Bob shouted over the noise, but his words must have been distorted, because both kids spun around and stared at the native guide. “They bite?” Sean asked. “Cool!” “Even better,” I said, “we could eat frogs legs.” I scrunched up my face, pretending to be grossed out by one of my secretly favorite dishes.

Again with the wide eyes. But unlike most kids, Fay and Sean are adventurous eaters, and had no trouble sitting at the picnic table under the shade of a Cypress tree, devouring a platter of lightly dusted and fried alligator tail nuggets and the undeniable skinned legs of a bullfrog. The heat of the day had finally waned, but the mosquitoes had doubled as the setting sun turned the light golden. I bit into the succulent, mildtasting white meat of the gator bite and was surprised by how tender it was. All that mass and tough exterior produces a delicate and soft-textured meat that reminds me of cod. I didn’t even have to lie to the children about what they were eating. And, as the old joke goes, they were the first to comment, “It tastes like chicken.” m l FALL 2014

AFTER EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS AND A MASSIVE expansion, Marina Gaviota Varadero has become Cuba’s largest and most modern marina with 1,200 slips, including docks for megayachts and a full-service yard. The Marina Gaviota Varadero, which is operated by the Gaviota Group, is located on the north shore of Matanzas province on the internationally-celebrated Varadero Beach, about 89 miles from Havana (coordinates: 23º 11.244 N 81º 08.069 W). It is right on the tip of the Hicacos Peninsula, and very close to the best hotels. A deluxe hotel, a number of condominiums, technical services, shopping malls and other facilities are also planned. An official opening is planned for 2015.

64th Ernest Hemingway international

billfishing tournament THE HEMINGWAY INTERNATIONAL BILLFISHING TOURNAMENT, HELD AT MARINA HEMINGWAY, 9 miles west of Havana, Cuba, took place this past June 9-14, 2014. There was wide international participation and the tournament finished with absolute success according to both organizers and participants. This edition of the tournament had 82 registered fishermen, divided into 22 groups, making it the second largest participation in the past decade. Representation from 11 countries included: Canada, USA, France, Switzerland, England, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Spain and Russia. The Tag-and Release method has become customary and was used, in favor of the protection of the species and the environment. The organizing committee confirmed that 26 marlins were marked and photographed and 48 walleyes were captured. With five walleyes and four marlins, the Cuban team came in first position, capturing the biggest walleye at 40.5 pounds on their boat, Santy. The United States’ boats, Odds and Ends and Tag-and-Release respectively occupied second and third place in the competition. Right behind the US was Spain’s Rebel Yell, capturing the largest tuna certified in the competition. The biggest marlin was caught by Macondo III of Canada.

international underwater

photography competition

THE 4TH EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL UNDERWATER Photography Competition, IMASUB 2014, was held June 14-20 at the Maria la Gorda International Diving Center. The competition had 78 participants from Argentina, Mexico, the United States, Colombia, Slovakia and Cuba. In the exceptional setting of the protected Guanahacabibes National Park, the westernmost point in Cuba, competitors dove in four different locations including Amirante, El Paradiso, Jardin de las Goergonias, and Acuario, to view the extensive marine floor. Judges analyzed photographs based on clarity, exhibition, composition, creativity and level of difficulty. ml
