“Marinas International acquired Emeryville Marina in the fall of 1998 and embarked on a multi-phase renovation of the existing marina. The renovation’s approval was met with hesitation from the local government as the marina is in a highly visible city park [Marina Park] which sits on San Francisco Bay in one of the most eco-sensitive areas of the country. The expertise and professionalism of the Marinas International staff quickly calmed the political waters and the master plan was approved. The trust generated by the corporate involvement has enabled the Marina to continue with the renovation and partner with the local authorities to make the Marina a “jewel” of the park system as well as a destination of choice for the boating public.”

EDITOR’S LOG

Welcome from Marinalife As I sit here and reflect on the year so far, I am anxious for the summer season ahead. After a harsh winter and chilly spring — a change can be good. The Marinalife team has been tackling many changes head on. In the last year, Marinalife launched the Cruising Club, a new membership program in partnership with Active Interest Media; published our first Chesapeake Bay Edition of Marinalife Magazine (that was in discussion for many years); and launched several new members benefits (see below). In my personal life, my husband and I made a change on the water by selling our 38-foot Ocean and buying a 31-foot Pursuit, for easier cruising around the Chesapeake Bay. We also experienced life away from any marinas. We traveled to Africa to help with a women’s community project and stayed in a small village in Tanzania. There is a lot going on this summer and while everyone has their own boating lifestyle — getting out on the water is what matters. Whether its sharing a cocktail on your boat with friends or racing from Newport to Bermuda. The Marinalife team has been working hard this spring to add some new features to the growing list of membership benefits. New this summer is “Ask the Captain,” which allows
12 marinalife.com
members to access tips and advice from captains ranging from cruising and docking, to service and maintenance for your vessel. Marinalife has also expanded our partnership with Atlantic Cruising Club (ACC) to update the current ACC reports and add Noteworthy — local information about the many ports they cover. This edition of the Marinalife Magazine has many exciting stories, from the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest to Cruising the Nantucket Sound a popular destination for summer boaters in New England. And my favorite — Pet-Friendly Boating Destinations — the photos were difficult to choose from because dogs on boats and playing in the water are all so adorable. We are excited to be out on the water this summer on our new boat and we hope to see many of you along the way!

A Weekend Getaway on Long Island Sound:
Cruising the Fishtail
18 marinalife.com
HE ATLANTIC OCEAN FLOWS TO THE WEST
from Block Island Sound to create the estuary called Long Island Sound. Every year, this “inland sea” gives boaters a summer full of cruising opportunities. At the eastern end of Long Island Sound, where the set and drift of the strong currents of The Race and Plum Gut test one’s navigation skills, is the Fishtail. Long Island is one hundred miles long (hence the name), and its eastern tip when viewed on a chart resembles the tail of a fish.
mystic seaport
connecticut AS A YOUNG BOY GROWING UP ON THE STREETS OF Brooklyn, weekend trips to Mystic Seaport with my father instilled in me love of the sea and maritime history. Today, the Seaport still draws crowds with “sea fever” and a strong desire to learn about our country's maritime heritage. Mystic Seaport (860-572-5391, mysticseaport.org) also has its own marina with transient docks, and admission to the museum is included in your dock fee. Brewer Yacht Yard at Mystic (860-536-2293, byy.com/Mystic) is also a great place to tie up offering a full service boat yard, onsite swimming pool, laundry and shower facilities.
GREENPORT AND EAST HAMPTON
NEW YORK day
1
PLAN ON AN EARLY START DOWN THE Mystic River to cross the narrow end of Long Island Sound. Enter the North Fork of the Fishtail at Plum Gut between Orient Point and Plum Island. Once in Gardiners Bay, cruise westward keeping Shelter Island to port. You will soon arrive at Greenport, your first stop after your 30 mile morning cruise. Spend the late morning and early afternoon ashore exploring the village of Greenport, which was named one of Forbes’ Prettiest Towns in America. Tie up your vessel right in town at Mitchell Park Marina (631-477-2200, villageofgreenport.org) and have lunch at Claudio’s Clam Bar or Claudio’s Crabby Jerry’s along the town wharf. After a short siesta, fire up your engines and double back into Gardiners Bay. This time keep Shelter Island to starboard. Three Mile Harbor is your destination, 12 miles away on the south shore of the bay. Three Mile
Harbor is a well protected body of water located “three miles” from East Hampton. Both Halsey’s Marina and Gardiner’s Marinas (631-324-5666, sea-incorp.com) offer 10% off dockage for Marinalife members throughout the summer. Just east of the harbor is the hamlet of Springs, whose name probably does not ring a bell. However, the names of the Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Heller, Phillip Roth, John Steinbeck and Nora Ephron may. These artists and writers have all worked or lived in nearby Springs. Although culturally important, Springs doesn’t have the draw of East Hampton. Most boaters just take the short taxi ride into town to shop and to have dinner at one of the tony restaurants. Perhaps you’ll spot David Geffen who just paid over $50 million for his East Hampton estate.
Everybody enjoys Claudio’s, in Greenport, N.Y., which has been owned by the same family since 1886.

SAG HARBOR AND
RIVERHEAD day
2
After departing Sag Harbor and rounding North Haven Peninsula, cruise southwesterly across Noyack Bay leaving the needle tip of Jessup Neck on your port side. Continue down Little Peconic Bay to Robins Island. Head north around the island through the North Race into Great Peconic Bay, and keep an eye out for shoals. Carry on across Great Peconic Bay, to Flanders Bay and continue up the Peconic River. This afternoon leg is about 25 miles, and you can tie up for the night at Treasure Cove Resort Marina (631-727-8386, treasurecoveresortmarina.com) in Riverhead offering Marinalife members 10% off transient dockage. The hamlet of Riverhead is the center of Long Island wine country and has almost 50 vineyards and wineries in the surrounding area (during the summer season the marina offers a daily shuttle service to local areas).

Sag Harbor has a charming downtown with lots of eclectic restaurants including B. Smith’s Sag Harbor, Sen Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar and The Corner Bar. Photo Credit: Long Island CVB
AFTER STAYING UP TO THE WEE hours with the young and hip in the East Hampton night club scene, you are probably tempted to sleep in late, and have a latte delivered to your boat. Feel free to indulge, as your next port of call is Sag Harbor for lunch only 10 miles to the west. Most of Sag Harbor village is a national historic site which focuses on its prominence as a shipping and a whaling port from the 1790s to the 1860s. Enjoy a walking tour of the town after lunch, check with the tourist information center at the windmill at Long Wharf. Dock at Sag Harbor Yacht Club (631-725-0567, sagharboryc.com) just a short walk from town.
The South Shore of the Peconic Bays and
SHELTER ISLAND
day
3
IN THE MORNING, CRUISE BACK OUT FLANDERS Bay into Great Peconic Bay, round Red Cedar Point and continue eastward along the south shore of the bay for some gunkholing. In succession, explore the back waters of Red Creek Pond, Cold Spring Pond and Sebonac Creek and North Sea Harbor. If you have a stand up paddle board or sea kayak on board, drop your anchor and see what you can discover. Continue northeasterly to Shelter Island in the afternoon, and the entrance to West Neck Harbor off Shelter Island Sound. The harbor has a designated anchorage area at southern end, or call ahead for a slip for the night at The Island Boatyard & Marina (631-749-3333) at the northern end. Either have dinner and dessert at the nearby Island Cafe, or just relax on the hook after a great day of cruising, sipping a glass of Long Island pinot noir. This picturesque island has five harbors to explore, each with its own unique flavor. You will be tempted to stay for more than a day. Stop by Sunset Beach (631-749-2001, sunsetbeachli.com) and drop anchor and enjoy drinks at the lively beachside restaurant and bar. m l

We enjoy using Marinalife as a resource for all of our boat travel. It’s so convenient... we simply place an online reservation and very promptly we have an email confirming our slip. While we enjoy the convenience of Marinalife’s services and the discounts on dockage and fuel, the best part of the membership is that Marinalife has built many relationships with marinas over the years, and their helpful guidance gives us the confidence we need when selecting our next destination.
Marinalife to me is like having a personal concierge service on my boat. Trip planning services and marina reservations are all available with just a click of mouse. The Marinalife Cruising Club card is well known throughout the marinas and makes your membership practically free with all the discounts on fuel and dockage! As the popular saying goes, “What's in your wallet?” The Marinalife card is in mine. Don't leave your boat without it.

Last year was my first year boating and Off The Grid is my first boat, which I bought from MarineMax that came with a free Marinalife Membership. Friends made fun of me that my very first boat was such a big boat and I just jumped in. I started flipping through the pages of the Marinalife magazine and saw the benefits of the membership. My wife and I wanted to plan trips but we had no idea which marina to use and where to go. Marinalife took all the guesswork out of finding the right marina and making the reservations so I didn't feel like a rookie when it came to cruising.

PORT PERSONALITIES >
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT THE MARINA AND WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU GOT INTO THE MARINE INDUSTRY?
I have been at Newport Marina for 13 years. Before I got into the marine industry, I owned my own salon in East Providence, R.I. I was a barber and stylist, and taught color courses for Redkin. Seven people worked atmy salon and I eventually sold it to one of my employees who still runs it today.
STEVEN SULLIVAN NEWPORT MARINA, NEWPORT, R.I. WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL BOAT YOU HAVE SEEN AT THE MARINA?
My own — Nalu, a 1975 Squadron Yacht built in Bristol, R.I. It’s fiberglass with a lap straight design. She has an inboard/ outboard engine. The deck and cap rails are teak with a teak spoke steering wheel.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?
WHAT IS THE BEST TIP THAT YOU CAN GIVE A NEW BOATER?
Any James Bond movie. I love them all — anything that has to do with women and their accents.
Take a safe boating course. Do not panic and try to relax. If you get in trouble — just put it in neutral.
CAKE OR PIE?
WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP? WHEN
Cake! I prefer red velvet or double chocolate cake.
YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?
Hockey of course.
You of course! Oh no … my wife and my family. My two greyhounds, my cat Mia, and our horses Jake and Sully. When I wake up I think “Wow I woke up!” I call my wife every morning to touch base. She lives in St. Augustine, Fla., while I’m in Newport for the summer.
WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WENT OUT TO DINNER?
I usually like to read sport books. However, the last book I read was Mike Stanton’s “Prince of Providence” about the ex-mayor of Providence, R.I.
Every night ... just kidding. Well since I’m in Newport — I go out to eat 3-4 times a week with business associates or marina clients. My favorite spots for a Long Island Iced Tea are the The Port Grill & Raw Bar or O’Brien’s Pub.
IF YOU COULD BE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE, WHAT SPORT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
WHAT IS YOUR BEST CHILDHOOD VACATION MEMORY?
I remember spending the summers with my grandfather at our beach cottage in Matunuck Beach, R.I. We would spend time on the water and watch the fisherman come in.
WHICH REALITY TV SHOW WOULD YOU WANT TO BE ON?
DO YOU SWIM LIKE A FISH OR LIKE A ROCK?
WHAT SONG BEST DESCRIBES YOU?
I am a good swimmer. I used to swim like a fish — now I’m older and I’m out of shape and feel like I have rocks on my legs.
Most of Jimmy Buffet’s songs would describe me like “Mother Ocean.”
“The Amazing Race” — I’m very competitive — I love the obstacles and challenges.

he standard dictionary entry for the San Juan Islands goes like this:
San Juan Historical Museum Archives.
SAN’ JUAN’ IS’LANDS (sæn hwa:n) N. PL. An archipelago of northwest Washington off the southeast coast of Vancouver Island north of Puget Sound.
BUT THAT DOESN’T GIVE ANY INKLING of the unique role the San Juans played in the territorial ambitions of Great Britain, Spain, and the newly created United States of America at the close of the 18th century. There are about 172 islands in the group, set 65 miles north of Seattle. The largest islands are Orcas, San Juan, Lopez, Decatur, and Shaw. They are surrounded by straits named Georgia, Haro, Rosario, Juan de Fuca, and Boundary Pass. And all these names are clues to the history of this corner of the Pacific Northwest. The voyages of the Age of Discovery are replete with experienced seafarers brave enough to undertake risky explorations in the name of a European monarch. The Italians Cristoforo Colombo and Zuan Chabotto are better known today as Christopher Columbus and John Cabot. between England’s and Spain's possessions. In 1791, both Spanish and British expeditions set out to map the proposed boundary area. In the process, Orcas Island was named for the viceroy (short for “Horcasitas”) and the navigator de Haro’s name was given to the Strait of Haro. The following year, George Vancouver named the Strait of Georgia in honor of King George III of England. The peaceful accommodation of imperial borders between Spain and England was put into place and remained that way until 1819. That was the year that Spain transferred its Pacific Northwest territories to the nascent United States of America. The San Juan Islands were recharted in 1841 for the U.S. Navy as part of the United States Exploring Expedition, led by Charles Wilkes,

captain named Ionnas Phocas, hired by King Philip II of Spain, is better known by the Spanish transcription of his name: Juan de Fuca. De Fuca was tasked with finding the Northwest Passage, the elusive sea route across North America linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Strait of Anian was fabled to be the Pacific entrance to the Northwest Passage, and in 1592 de Fuca claimed to have discovered it. Almost 200 years later, an English captain rediscovered the body of water and renamed it the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In the late 1700s, with Great Britain claiming parts of the Pacific Northwest south of Canada and Spain claiming many of those same places north of California, an international crisis was brewing. In the spring of 1789, the King of Spain ordered the Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), Juan Vicente de Guemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, to stand firm on Spain's claims to the Pacific Northwest. Viceroy Horcasitas sent an expedition the following year to enforce Spain's claims. In May of 1790, a ship from this fleet, led by Manuel Quimper and his navigator Gonzalo Lopez de Haro, explored deep into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and discovered a group of islands, soon named the San Juan Islands in honor of the Mexican viceroy. caption The next winter, Spain proposed that the Strait of Juan de Fuca should become the boundary

Wendy and Ira exchange vows at the Ocean Reef Club, in Key Largo, Fla.
B Y W E N DY L E V E N S H O N
GO NORTH, OLD MAN ra says that boating is a metaphor for life. One moment the seas are calm with fair winds and blue skies and the next, wind gusts to 30 knots with 12foot seas. We experience it all for the love of the sea. Five years ago, Ira and I were married barefoot on the bow of our 58-foot Satori at Ocean Reed Club in Key Largo, Fla. The time came and we upgraded our 58-foot Satori to our new 74-foot Satori and began enjoying the summer months cruising to Maine from our homeport in Miami. As the season is short in Maine, we travel north quickly and take our time returning home to Florida. Provisioning begins in late May insuring that we have everything on board for our extended cruise including meals, walkie-talkies and spare tires for our bikes before we depart in June. Given a weather window, we depart from Miami to Coinjock Marina, N.C., spending two nights on board Satori. Coinjock Marina is a welcoming place smack in the middle of the boondocks, where we feast on their great prime rib and fried chicken. We stock Satori with 2,100 gallons of fuel, and we’re off at first light the next day through Norfolk, Va. to overnight in Greenport, N.Y. on the Long Island Sound. Mitchell Park Marina in Greenport is a great base for experiencing over 30 wineries.

Corey Creek Vineyard has Moonlight Monday with oysters and barbeque, while Sparkling Pointe has live music and tapas and Jamestown has wood fired pizzas and oysters every Sunday. Greenport is also a wonderful place to spend the 4th of July! We enjoy all the celebrations and fireworks that spread over all the adjoining towns night sky from our aft deck. Our three daughters, son in law and two grandchildren will spend long weekends with us on board Satori. The world famous Claudio’s Restaurant
is adjacent to the marina and we spend many nights on our deck listening to their live music while watching the party scene. Then we’re off to New England through the Cape Cod Canal to Portland, Maine which is a foodie’s delight. Duckfat Restaurant has a creative menu that any cardiologist would run from. They prepare a “poutine” with duck fat French fried potatoes. We never miss the Portland’s Farmers Market and on a calm day, we dinghy on the Casco Bay to charming Dia-

mond Island for a relaxing lunch on the lawn at the Diamond’s Edge. We dock for a week or two at the Maine Yachting Center, just a few minutes from town. Our next stop varies. At Boothbay, Maine we dock at the friendly Carousel Marina and walk over to the lobster pounds where we enjoy watching the lobster boats unloading our lunch and dinner. At Rockland, we dock at Trident Marina and dine at the famous farm to table Primo’s for dinner. We enjoy the emerging art scene, too. In Camden, we dock at Wayfarer Marine and enjoy the countless restaurants in this quaint little town. Looking back, our first voyage from Camden to Northeast Harbor plunged us into fog that was quite challenging. I stood a careful watch on the bow announcing every lobster pot and sound through my headset while Ira insured that every other boat knew where we were as we headed with the rhythmic foghorn soundings and radioed point to point. After hours the sun finally peaked through just in time to see hundreds of colorful lobster pots blocking the entrance to Northeast Harbor. At Northeast Harbor Town Dock, we are greeted by John, the Harbormaster, who sports a quintessential Maine smile. A short walk from the docks is the charming little town with a few boutiques, hardware store, galleries and housewares. We eat our weight in fresh lobsters each season either boating, biking or driving to our favorite lobster pounds: Abel’s, Beal’s, Thurston’s and Trenton Bridge, just to To view this article and cruise online, visit marinalife.com/gonorth name a few. A short drive takes us to the Burning Tree Restaurant and Town Hill Bistro for a change of menu to gourmet delights. The Ilseford Dock Restaurant is a local gem on Little Cranberry Island, a short dinghy ride away. We look forward to our daily hikes up the hills and mountain trails of Acadia National Park. Our favorite is the hike from the base to the peak of any one of the four trails on the face of Cadillac Mountain — the highest point on the Eastern seaboard. Achieving each summit makes us feel decades younger gazing down at the most majestic views of the many sounds and tiny surrounding islands. From the peak of Cadillac Mountain, we see the Town of Bar Harbor, one of our favorite destinations. Towards the end of our stay in Northeast Harbor, one of our friends invites an extended guest list to a boat house on Great Cranberry for a real downeastern Lobster Bake with dozens of freshly caught lobsters steamed in seaweed with all the pot luck fixings that everyone brings. Now it is late August and time to journey back down. ml

The Great Loop, the Downeast Loop, the Triangle Loop, Florida’s Little Loop— boaters seem to be quite loop happy. So here’s one to add to your loopy list: the Nantucket Sound Loop, circling from Cape Cod in the north to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in the south. There are many well-protected harbors, the fishing is very good, beaches run for miles, and there are quintessential small towns everywhere.

LOOPING NANTUCKET SOUND
GREAT PLACE TO start is in Woods Hole, just down the road from Falmouth on the Cape. It's less than 12 miles from the Cape Cod Canal and less than 25 from Newport, Rhode Island. From there, the loop runs east-southeast to Martha’s Vineyard, east to Nantucket, north up to Hyannis, and west over to Cotuit Bay before heading southwest to return to Woods Hole. This route stays inside the Nantucket Sound, safe from large ocean swells. There are many shoals scattered around the sound, but they are well charted and marked, and there’s plenty of room to avoid them. The longest run is about 25 miles, which means easy day trips for even the slowest of vessels. By going north from Nantucket to Hyannis, the trip takes advantage of the prevailing southwesterly winds that dominate here during the summer. In Woods Hole, tie up in Hadley’s Harbor, a very unique place. The Forbes family installed mooring buoys here in the inner harbor — they are marked private but that

seems to be a technicality, as cruising boats use the moorings regularly. Oh, and by the way, they’re free. The only problem with that is that they’re also often full. Your other options are to anchor in outer Hadley’s Harbor or proceed to a mooring or slip in Woods Hole harbor. While you're in town, don't miss the tour at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, it is excellent. And when you're motoring out of Woods Hole, pay attention to the current as you're maneuvering toward open water—there are rocks all around! Next up, Martha’s Vineyard. This is a

Chappaquiddick Island was connected to Martha's Vineyard until 2007 when a strong storm washed away the beach creating two islands with a 200-yard channel in between, now it is a popular fishing spot located on the southeastern point of the beach called Wasque Point.
In 1975, the movie “Jaws” was filmed in Martha's Vineyard, and the American Legion Memorial Bridge was featured. This infamous landmark has been dubbed "the ‘Jaws’ bridge" and is the bridge dividing Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.
very big island with many ports to choose from. I like staying in Vineyard Haven Harbor. It’s in the center of the island, is sheltered from the winds, has options for anchoring, mooring or dockage, and the excellent local bus system makes it easy to get around. Plus, the collection of classic yachts moored here is great fun to check out. To the east, Oak Bluff has moorings and dock space options and seems to be party central. Edgartown, farthest east, is an outstanding little village with anchoring, mooring, and some dock space as well. SUMMER 2014

A walking tour of the many old sea captains’ houses is a great way to stretch your legs. Take the ferry across to Chappaquiddick to explore the marshes and beaches. After the Vineyard, it's on to Nantucket. This has to be the most New England of New England destinations. Many of the streets are cobblestone, and the buildings are postcard perfect. There is room to anchor, a large mooring field, and in the harbor is the excellent Nantucket Boat Basin (508-325-1350, nantucketboatbasin.com), which has earned the Marinalife Transient Marina Of The Year Award for three years running. George Bassett, the dockmaster for 28 years, has built up an 86 percent customer return rate, in large part because it's all about customer service at Nantucket Boat Basin. George and his 40-person staff keep everyone happy, and it's important to book your reservations early to make sure you get a spot. The wharf-like setting is charming and one-of-a-kind, with shops and restaurants just steps away. It has the appearance more of a fishing village than a marina, and it works very well. Arrange for a bike rental to venture along the island's paved bike trails past beautiful homes and pristine beaches. You can also run your dinghy five miles from Nantucket Boat Basin up to the “Head Of The Harbor” and the stunningly gorgeous Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. There’s nothing quite like Nantucket.
Next, head 25 mile north to Hyannis. Don’t lie, the first thing you think of when hearing “Hyannis” is “Kennedy,” and rightly so. That family made the town famous, and still has a compound there. You can anchor in the outer harbor not far from several of their moored boats. Visit the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum to learn even more about one of our best-known presidents. But there is also so much more to Hyannis. Well-protected Lewis Bay is accessed via a deep channel, and has a mooring field run by the Hyannis Yacht Club and a large area available for anchoring. Further into Hyannis’ inner harbor you’ll find the Hyannis Marina (508790-4000, hyannismarina.com), a resort-like facility with all the usual extras plus 200 slips for yachts up to 200 feet, a pool, Trader Ed’s Cabana Bar, Tugboat’s Restaurant, three courtesy cars, and one of the best-stocked marina ships stores I’ve ever seen. Carla Sullivan, dockmaster for 18 years, runs a tight ship — if you need it, she can get it. She regularly attends to the needs of the megayachts that frequently tie up, but gives the royal treatment to every boat that lands at her docks, no matter how large or small. If you can pull yourself away from the marina, there are all kinds of excellent restaurants and attractions to check out. The Black Cat Tavern has some of the best “chowda” around. Downtown there’s a unique collection of waterfront artists’ studios, a maritime museum, and plenty of shops to fulfill the need for retail therapy.
Don’t lie, the first thing you think of when hearing “Hyannis” is “Kennedy,” and rightly so. That family made the town famous and still has a compound there.
The Lewis Bay Light in Hyannis, Mass., is a 26-foot tower and a replica of Brant Point Light on Nantucket. The best views can be seen from North Street and Lewis Bay Road and, of course, entering the harbor on your vessel.

HEN YOU THINK OF WOODS HOLE, you may think of stately mansions, but Woods Hole also has floating houses, and these seem to be proliferating and expanding. Now many of the houses are substantial with skylights, balconies, and fine architectural details. Some are well equipped with deck, lounge chair and BBQ. Some are simple, some are colorful, and some dispense with the house altogether.

There are nice beaches on the inside and outside of Egg Island, just a quick dinghy ride from anywhere in the harbor. The last stop on this loop is Cotuit Bay. The channel at the entrance to Cotuit Bay is quite shallow, so the preferred entry route is the channel into West Bay, followed by an immediate turn into the Seapuit River behind Dead Neck. This route gets dredged frequently and big sailboats use it regularly. There are marinas further up West Bay and a mooring field in Cotuit Bay, but I like to anchor behind Dead Neck in the no-wake zone. There is a sandy bottom with good holding behind the barrier-island bird sanctuary. You can walk around the beach to the sound to swim in the ocean, or just relax in the peaceful, quiet setting. From the West Bay channel, it’s an easy day trip back to Woods Hole. Falmouth Harbor, less than 10 miles west of Woods Hole, has plenty of marinas if anchoring out for a night is not your cup of tea. You can do this loop in a week, though it's better if you give it two weeks, and you could easily spend a month or two doing it, exploring all that the many islands and harbors have to offer. However long you go for, enjoy Nantucket Sound! m l

LOBSTER:
From Rags to Riches migrate into warm waters to molt and mate, so they’re hungry and not as tasty. Lobster purists insist that a steaming pot of water with a dash of salt is the best way to prepare this savory seafood, because it brings out the natural flavors. But regional cooks like to play around with lobster to create dishes for both the white linen crowd and the casual diner. Lobster Newberg, which was allegedly created at New York City’s renowned Delmonico Restaurant in the 1870s, is a dish designed for special occasions. Its simmering blend of tail meat, butter, heavy cream, cognac and a pinch of cayenne pepper is a rich decadent delight. Yet, some prefer simpler recipes. The lobster roll, pieces of lobster mixed with mayo, celery, and lemon juice, and tucked inside a toasted kaiser roll, is an ideal summer lunch at a beach in Cape Cod.
Maine Office of Tourism
IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT LOBSTERS were once considered a poor man’s food. In Colonial New England, lobsters grew so abundantly that they were fed to children, prisoners and indentured servants. Many Massachusetts servants put clauses in their contracts stating that employers could not serve lobster more than three times a week. In the mid-1800s, high-society diners in New York and Boston took a liking to this tasty crustacean and elevated lobsters to a delicacy. Species of lobsters appear in every ocean, but the cream of the crop comes from the Atlantic waters of Maine and Canada, where more than half of the world’s supply is harvested. Lobster fishing season in North America peaks twice a year, in late spring and the fall. Even though visitors look forward to the summer ritual of a lobster boil, it’s not necessarily the best time of year for cracking claws. That’s when lobsters

SCALLOPS:
A Heavenly Feast Available in Two Sizes
Since the Middle Ages, the scallop shell has been the symbol of St. James. Christians who made pilgrimages to his shrine wore a scallop shell on their clothes or on a string around their neck. When they stopped to rest, pilgrims were allowed to scoop a shell’s worth of food at churches, castles or homes along the way. Centuries later, when French cooks combined scallops with mushrooms, cream, wine and parmesan cheese, they named the savory dish “Coquilles de St. Jacques,” or Scallops St. James, after the holy man and his followers. Like the medieval pilgrims, scallops want to roam. Other bivalves, such as oysters, mussels, and clams, latch onto a surface and spend their lives in one place. Scallops are free-swimming mollusks that flit about the waves by opening and closing their shells with their adductor muscle. This powerful muscle is what we eat. Scallops come in two different varieties. The larger sea scallops, which can

the salmon are people in fish form with supernatural abilities and eternal lives. They resided in beautiful homes under the sea, but offered themselves to tribes on land as a source of food, as long as humans treated them with respect and allowed their spirits to return to the sea. This legend illustrates salmons’ unique behavior of being born in fresh water, living in the ocean’s salt water, and then returning to rivers and streams to spawn and die. This cycle of life takes place on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Almost 99% of Atlantic salmons are farm-raised, but nearly 80% of western salmon are caught in the wild. Salmon is a hit with healthy eaters, because it is high in omega-3 acids and vitamin D. Plus, it’s considered a fatty fish, which helps combat cholesterol and heart issues — and works well for grilling. If you travel to the West Coast this summer, you’ll discover that salmon recipes mirror the region’s diverse cultures and influences. California, with its large Asian population, is known for pressing fresh salmon into sushi rolls or grilling filets with soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar and chives. In the Northwest, Native Americans like to roast salmon on cedar planks, the same way their ancestors did for centuries.

grow up to eight inches in diameter, are found in the North Atlantic from Newfoundland to North Carolina. They cost less but are ideal for quick grilling or pan frying to a golden brown. Bay scallops, which reside in bays and estuaries from New England to the Gulf of Mexico, have a sweeter taste and only hit the 4 inch mark. Sea scallops are gathered from fall to spring, whereas bay scallops are ripe in autumn.

CRABS: BOILED or STEAMED
The Debate Rages On Our planet is home to 4,500 species of edible crabs — snow, Dungeness, queen, red rock, Chinese mitten, and Pacific spider crabs, to name a few. Dipped into melted butter, every one of them tastes divine. However, U.S. crab eaters fall into two distinctly different camps: Maryland blue crabs fans or King crab devotees. One is East Coast driven, the other stems from the West Coast. Regional distinctions are as different as day and night. Maryland blue crabs, the runt of the crab species litter, are small in stature but big in flavor. They swim along the western edge of the Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia to Argentina, and the Gulf of Mexico, but most are pulled from Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina waters. They mate and then hibernate in the mud from October to April. When water temperatures rise above 50 degrees, they emerge with a feisty gusto and crab season begins.
Maryland natives express strong opinions about cooking their home-grown crabs. Steamed for 25 minutes with hefty shakes of Old Bay seasoning is the best way to go. Piping hot crabs fanned out on a picnic table with brown paper and wooden mallets is a summer rite of passage. When the meat is molded into crab cakes, green pepper or bread crumb filler is seriously frowned upon, because locals want to savor every bite of the tender, sweet crustacean. Soft shells — crabs that have just shed their hard outer shells — are dusted with flour, fried to a crunchy brown, and then laid between two slices of white bread with a swipe of mayo. Crispy legs that dangle out from the crust taste like a tiny bite of the Chesapeake Bay. Stone and king crabs are all about the legs. These prized crustaceans are found around the Pacific Rim from eastern Korea to northern British Columbia and the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Gulf of Alaska, Sea of Okhotsk, and Kamchatka shelf. Fishing season lasts from October to January. King crabs reign supreme among this species, a and the long spindly legs turn a creamy white color with red accents when steamed, and they’re considered one of Neptune’s greatest gifts to mankind.

CRAWFISH:
Pinch the Tail & Suck the Head WHETHER YOU CALL THEM craw daddies, crayfish or crawfish, everybody knows you’re talking about a distant relative of the lobster that has deep roots in Louisiana and Gulf Coast cuisine. Locals say the best time to eat them is spring (midMarch to mid-May) when water temperatures rise above 60 degrees, and the adults are hell-bent on mating and the babies aren’t yet born. They’re juicier then and have more meat on them. From August to February, shells become tough and harder to peel.
60 marinalife.com
To eat like a Cajun, look for a Louisiana crawdad boil with corn on the cob, potatoes, andouille sausage, mushrooms and onions cooked together in a big old pot with a dash of hot sauce or seasonings. If you want to run like the local herd, pinch the crawfish tail to get every morsel of meat and suck the brains from the head to have a full-flavor experience. A cool bottle of Abita beer helps muster enough courage to take the first slurp of the head. Another Big Easy favorite, Crawfish Etouffee, offers an option for the less daring. Its name comes from the French word “to smother,” and aptly describes the thick stew of plump crawfish in a thick blonde roux served over rice with fresh chopped scallions. A slice of hot French garlic bread along with an icy Hurricane, and you’ll be singing tunes along with the zydeco band.

UCKED AWAY ON THE Miles River along the Chesapeake Bay's eastern shore is the quaint town of St. Michaels, Md. This charming seaside spot dates back to the mid-1600s, when it served as a trading post for tobacco farmers and trappers. Its colonial roots are still much in evidence, as the streets are dotted with beautiful historic homes. Centrally located in the heart of town is St. Michaels Marina, which has been family owned and operated since 1982 — the current owner is Michael Morgan, who purchased the marina from his father in 2006. As you approach the docks of St. Michaels Marina, you are instantly put at ease. DINGHY
BUYERS’
GUIDE
N
KEEP IT SIMPLE The first lesson: a dinghy should be easy to use. If it requires too much effort to launch and operate, you will be reluctant to anchor out as often as you might like. Ease of use is determined by several factors, such as whether you have to inflate the dinghy, whether you have to mount the engine, or whether you need three people and a crane to lower it into the water. Many of these choices will be determined by the size and configuration of your boat, but regardless of your boat’s size or your budget, you can create a setup that works for you.
Dori Arrington
B Y B O B A R R I N GTO N
OT SINCE ELVIS PRESLEY crooned an ode to his dinghy, “Love My Tender,” has the world shown so much affection to our lonesome ship-to-shore transportation. Okay, so maybe I didn't fully understand the lyrics to that song, but our often abused and rarely waxed little boats are a very important part of our cruising lives, so let’s pay a little attention to them. For most coastal cruising in this country, you could happily travel from marina to marina without the need for a dinghy. But if you occasionally enjoy the peace and quiet of an anchorage, or if you plan to cruise to the Bahamas or the Caribbean, you will need dependable transportation to shore, and that can take several forms.
68 marinalife.com
Dori Arrington
HOW DO I CARRY THEE? Let me count the ways. If you do not have the option of a crane-style lifting device, you may be limited in terms of the size and weight of your dinghy, but that does not mean you are relegated to the equivalent of a rubber toy boat. There are efficient davit systems that can be mounted on medium-size swim platforms. These will accommodate a variety of dinghy styles, both rigid and inflatable, and will allow you to keep the engine mounted to the dinghy. There are also hydraulic lift systems to carry a tender off your stern, but your transom has to be capable of carrying the device, and your boat has to be heavy enough to stay balanced with that much weight aft of center. If your boat meets those requirements, the hydraulic lifts are about as easy to use as it gets. Now let’s address towing a dinghy. While I’ll admit to having done this in protected waters, I generally do not consider it a safe practice. There are too many documented cases of towing components fouling up props and leaving boaters stranded. If you travel to the islands you will see many cruisers towing dinghies, but please use extreme caution if you choose to do this. Learn where and how to safely attach the dinghy to your boat, and if there is any threat of rough seas retrieve the dinghy immediately and secure it to the mother ship.
HULL STYLE AND MATERIAL Dinghies come in a variety of hull styles and materials, including plank-reinforced fabric bottoms, high-pressure inflatable bottoms, and rigid hulls of fiberglass or aluminum. Generally speaking, the soft-bottom styles are limited in terms of what they can do and endure, even if they have a high-pressure floor with a keel. If you are using your dinghy to regularly
transport serious loads of supplies and people, a rigid hull is almost a must. And if you are cruising in the tropics where you are as likely to be landing on a beach as tying up at a dock, all the more reason you’ll need a rigid bottom. Rigid bottoms can be part of a fully rigid boat, but more frequently they are connected to an inflatable top tube and are called “rigid inflatable boats,” or RIBs for short. These have become the ubiquitous tender of choice for most cruisers. You get durability and stability from the rigid hull, and buoyancy and lightness from the inflatable top tubes. The hull bottoms are typically fiberglass or, recently, aluminum, which also makes the craft lighter. The inflatable tubes come in a range of materials, including PVC, coated neoprene, and Hypalon. Hypalon is widely considered the best material for the inflatable parts of a dinghy.

Dori Arrington
Neoprene is also excellent, but does not have good resistance to UV. Very high quality dinghies are Hypalon-coated neoprene. Besides the material used for the tubes, the size of the tubes is also important. The larger the tube, the more freeboard you get and the dryer your ride will be. An additional hull feature to consider is whether you want a single or double floor. A double floor provides a flat bottom on which to stand, but it also adds weight. And you’ll need to decide if you want enclosed spaces for cargo or fuel, or a steering-wheel console instead of a tiller.
SIZE MATTERS Of course another important question: How big a dinghy should you buy? In part this will be determined by your available carrying space and how you intend to use the dinghy. A typical dinghy is 8 to 16 feet in length. Look for the required capacity plate to find out how many people and how much weight a particular dinghy can hold. Engine size is the next important consideration. The horse power of your engine will go hand in hand with some of the other factors you've already determined, like the weight capacity of your lifting device and where on your boat you'll be carrying your dinghy. A heavy dinghy and engine carried too high on a vessel can affect the vessel’s stability. The dinghy’s capacity plate will also list the maximum engine size the dinghy is rated to carry. Some of the larger dinghies may have an optional internal jet drive. Many smaller dinghies are well suited to some of the new, environmentally friendly engines that run on electric or propane. The typical RIB has a V-shape planing hull that requires
70 marinalife.com
a certain amount of horse power to get it on a plane with a given load. For instance, a 9 horse power engine will get an 8-foot dinghy on plane carrying two average-size adults, but not four. Most anchorages and mooring fields are located within no-wake zones, so if you are strictly using your dinghy for shore transportation, there is probably no need for it to travel at warp speed. But if your dinghy will double as a recreational vehicle for pulling skiers and water toys, you’ll need enough horse power to perform those tasks.
IT’S STILL A BOAT Meaning that dinghies are subject to the same rules and regulations as our primary boats. They require registration, running lights, life jackets, and, if there is an enclosed fuel tank, a fire extinguisher.
SUNSCREEN Like automobiles, dinghies’ lives can be cut short by over-exposure to sun and general abuse. Just as sunscreen protects our skin, there are polymers and waxes to protect dinghies from the harsh sun and salt water. A regular application of these coatings will prolong your dinghy’s life, as will a good cover. Most modern dinghy engines have hose connections to run fresh water through the internal components — doing this regularly, and especially before any prolonged lay-up, will extend engine life. A well-suited dinghy can add freedom and adventure to our cruising lives. The more clearly you can define how you will use your dinghy, the more accurately you will be able to match your choice to your needs. m l

Long Island Sound offers a world of opportunities for local and vacationing anglers alike during the summer season.

HETHER YOU’RE A local resident, weekend warrior or vacation visitor, from New Rochelle to Montauk, Long Island Sound offers a diverse angling landscape where a variety of inshore species inhabit the area during the summer season. The plethora of bays including Huntington Bay, Oyster Bay, Smithtown Bay in the Western Sound as well as Great Peconic Bay, Little Peconic Bay and Gardiners Bay to the east and the many inlets, creeks and shallow water estuaries which dot the coastline are a magnet for northeast saltwater favorites including striped bass, summer flounder and bluefish. Here, light-tackle reigns supreme and non-stop action can make for an exciting day on the water. An abundance of angler-friendly marinas and launch ramps provide daily access or slips for extended stays for visiting anglers. For non-stop rod-bending action, bluefish provide thrills for anglers, especially

kids, and are abundant all over the Sound during the summer. While they are easily caught trolling wireline with a variety of plugs, spoons and umbrella rigs, this heavytackle technique provides little sport. A better approach is a six-pound spinning or baitcasting outfit which allows casting surface plugs such as a four-inch Tsunami Ported Popper or Guides Secret Baby Bottle Popper. Effective color combinations include blue/silver and black/silver, solid while and solid chartreuse. Be on the water at daybreak on an incoming tide and focus on shallow water flats, channel edges and bridges where bluefish prowl seeking an easy meal. Utilize a moderate retrieve while occasionally snapping the plug on the surface which creates a commotion bluefish can’t resist. Often multiple choppers can be seen crashing the plug on the surface and expect several to follow their hooked relative right to the boat. As the sun rises higher in the sky casting small metals, such as a Kastmaster, Krocodile or Hopkins, will
draw strikes as these lures sink lower in the water column where bluefish lurk in the bright daylight. When using plugs remove the forward set of treble hooks and crush the barb on all hooks to expedite a quick release while also avoiding injury to the fish and angler. Striped bass are also plentiful in Long Island Sound though tactics change during the summer months as the water tempera-

ture rises. Here too, wireline trolling with umbrella rigs, bunker spoons and plugs will produce through June before livelining and chunking with bunker becomes the better approach. When chunking, anchor up ahead of a channel edge and cut bunker into chunks and dispense overboard at regular intervals to draw bass to the boat. Use a bunker chunk on a fishfinder rig with a circle hook to match the size chunks you’re dispersing and add an appropriate size sinker to place your offering at the bottom. Leave the reel in free spool and apply light thumb pressure to prevent line from leaving the spool. When a bass picks up the bait engage the reel and allow the bass to hook itself with the circle hook. For a light-tackle approach, casting bucktails and small swim baits such as the Tsunami Swim Shads or leadhead jigs with
rubber tails including DOA C.A.L Shad Tails or Jerk Baits is tough to beat. Keep in mind unlike bluefish, striped bass are not aggressive feeders and require a slightly different approach. Target areas such as channel edges, bridge supports, dock pilings and sod banks. Look for the best action to occur during the incoming tide of early morning and in the evening. When focusing your efforts around bridges and pilings, cast near the structure and allow the artificial to sink to the bottom before beginning a slow, deliberate retrieve. Remember a high-speed reel will require an even slower turn of the handle to make an effective presentation. Without question, summer flounder, or fluke as they are often referred to, are the most popular species in the Sound and will respond to a variety of rigs, baits and artificial offerings. The most popular natural baits are squid strips with spearing or a live killie added. Most bottom structure will hold these flatfish though channel edges, deep holes and rocky bottom contour will produce the larger species. When using natural bait a three-way swivel with a Kahle hook of 2/0-4/0 size snelled to a 24-inch 30pound test leader is a good choice. Add enough weight to hold bottom with an eightinch length of monofilament attached to the third loop in the swivel and a loop to change weights as desired. Cut squid in long strips and hook at tail end and add a live killie hooked through the tail to allow it to frantically swim. Drop offering to bottom and leave reel in free-spool to drop back a few feet when a bite occurs. Though natural baits are effective, bucktails can be downright deadly on fluke and will often produce larger specimens. White, pink and chartreuse versions are preferred and weight required will be determined by water depth and current. A teaser rig with a bucktail on the bottom and teaser placed about two-feet above with a squid strip puts

THE MEMORY of JERK B Y V I C TO R I A A L L M A N
’VE BEEN STUCK IN PORT FOR TOO long now. The yacht I work on is in the shipyard. So for now, it is a time of sitting and staying in one place; a time when my mind wanders back to earlier travels. Today, I’ve been thinking about Jamaica; a place of carnal color and debaucherous tales. But, my favorite memories of the place are not so much of climbing the waterfalls at Dunn’s River, leaping off the 45-foot cliffs above the Caribbean Sea at Rick’s, or vibrating with the sounds of reggae. My favorite memory is of what came after a trail ride through the ganja fields on a horse called
I
Smoke. Now, before you jump to any conclusions about what that memory might entail, or how hazy it might be, let me tell you about the jerk chicken I had. Hot and sweaty from the ride, I tied Smoke under the shade of a logwood tree. Not 20 feet away, a caravan had parked on the side of the road. The sharp smell of chilies from a steel barrel barbecue beside the truck had lured me off the trail and set my mouth to watering. “You ever had jerk?” A scrawny Jamaican man in long jean shorts and a white tank top asked me, steel tongs in

JAMAICAN JERK CHICKEN (SERVES 6)
Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meat “is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice. Jerk seasoning is traditionally applied to pork and chicken. Jerk seasoning principally relies upon two items: allspice (called “pimento” in Jamaica) and peppers.
1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon ½ whole nutmeg, grated 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 teaspoons brown sugar 1 cup ketchup 12 chicken thighs 2 limes, juiced
1. In a food processor, combine the rum, cider vinegar, green onions, garlic, thyme, scotch bonnet, canola oil, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, sea salt, pepper, brown sugar, and ketchup; process to a coarse paste. Pour the marinade into a large, shallow dish, add the chicken, and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bring the chicken to room temperature before proceeding. 2. Light a grill. Grill the chicken over a medium-hot fire, turning occasionally, until well browned and cooked through, 20-30 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a platter and drizzle with lime juice.

hand. His brown eyes never left the searing meat on the grill in front of him. “Not here.” I said. My eyes could barely leave the scene either. “Den you never had jerk.” He drawled. “Dis where it comes from.” His smile revealed two gold front teeth. He lifted a chicken leg from the grill and bent low to inspect the underside. His beehive of dreadlocks grazed low over the flames, threatening to ignite. “Dis one’s for you.” He wrapped the leg in paper and, along with the bundle, handed me a Red Stripe. I sat at a worn and splintered wood picnic table. The hot sun seared my skin as much as the flames had done the chicken. I took a long pull of the beer before picking up the meal. It was a good thing I did. Once I brought the leg to my mouth, I couldn’t put it down. The flavor exploded in my mouth. Sweetness and spice battled for dominance. Steam rose off the flesh as I tore into it. My tongue burned. Neither the heat nor the spice stopped me from devouring the whole thing in minutes. The man at the grill glanced over and laughed. “Another one?” I nodded vigorously. He began wrapping another piece. “Nobody ever has just one.” It was that taste I thought of while I sat planning the menu for lunch today. I may not be able to travel while the boat is in drydock, but I'm always ready to try and replicate that experience again. And again. m l SUMMER 2014
