Dear Member: it’s hard to believe that this year we are celebrating our 15th anniversary at Marinalife. in some ways, the years have flown by, but in other ways i can’t believe how much has happened over the last 15 years. We could not have achieved what we have without so many amazing supporters and partners. ank you to the members of the Marinalife team who have worked countless hours on magazine deadlines and tirelessly at dozens of boat shows. ank you to the Marinalife Board of Directors, many of whom have been with us since Day 1 (or before Day 1). anks to the hundreds of Marinalife partner marinas, especially the early adopters including Kingman Yacht Center, nantucket Boat Basin, Coastal Properties and Hawks Cay resort and Marina. anks to our members who have supported us throughout the years and a special call-out to our very first member, Dick riley (who continues to be a member even without a boat). And a special thank you to my husband, Douglas, who has carried our boat show bags, cases and cases of magazines and stayed up late to

review my presentations, business plans, etc. ank you to the entire Marinalife community for 15 years of your support and friendship – it has been a fun voyage. We are excited where Marinalife is heading, and we have many enhancements and improvements on the horizon to help make your time on the water even better. is issue is dedicated to our 15th anniversary and we thought it would be fun to share the evolution of the Marinalife magazine from the early years when it was called the Partner guide Book to the current 116-page four-color glossy magazine. enjoy this issue, and as always we love to hear from you, so please let us know how we are doing (email: joy@marinalife.com). ank again for sharing the last 15 years with us and here’s to another 15!

ST. JOHNS RIVER

experience OLD FLORIDA on the upper st. johns river BY C H U C K B A I E R A N D S U S A N L A N D R Y

ORTEGA RIVER

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

T

here are few places better to start a trip on Florida’s st. Johns river than on the Ortega river located near Jacksonville. e choices for weekend jaunts abound. start at either the Ortega Yacht Club Marina, (904-389-1199, oycm.com), known for its helpful

18

marinalife.com

and friendly atmosphere, or Lambs Yacht Center (904-384-5577, lambsyachtcenter.com), which has served the community for many years and where you can reprovision before heading out. Both marinas provide transient dockage and a number of

other services. From here you are only a long walk or good bike ride from the riverside Avondale historic district (riversideavondale.org). Attend the saturday morning Farmers Market, shop in any number of interesting stores or dine at superb restaurants.

Riverside Avondale

Riverside Avondale

Business is always brisk in the Farmers’ Row of the Riverside Arts Market.

Jacksonville Landing

A fun way to enjoy the riverside is by bike.

Jacksonville Landing is a floating dock that can accommodate a variety of vessels.

Day 1

DOWNTOWN

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA it will take less than an hour by boat to get to the downtown Jacksonville area. Begin your cruise of the st. Johns river at Jacksonville Landing, another rouse Company creation, for those of you familiar with the inner Harbor in Baltimore. e free, very long floating dock can accommodate any number of vessels; however, there is no power or water available, and it is first come, first served. As an alternative for shore power,

tie up across the river at river City Marina (904-398-7918, rivercitybrew.com), which offers fuel and 32-ounce beer growlers. eat at one the waterfront restaurants, which include Chicago Pizza, American grill, Fionn McCool’s and Benny’s steak and seafood, to name a few. if you’re lucky, there will be live music at the pavilion located in the midst of the restaurants. During our last visit, we

enjoyed an acoustic guitar performance of some Jimmy Buffett favorites. if you need to go ashore to stretch your legs, visit the highly regarded Cummer Museum of Art and gardens. Other options include the Jacksonville Maritime Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, right near Jacksonville Landing, or the Museum of science and History just across the river. WINTER 2015

Day 2 SIXMILE CREEK ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA

Sixmile Creek offers up many delightful vistas.

Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection

From the Landing, head an easy 30 miles upriver (south) to sixmile Creek to the Outback Crab shack (904-522-0500, outbackcrabshack.com). After passing under shands Bridge at green Cove springs, cruise to the eastern side of the river and into Palmo Cove, where the restaurant boasts a long floating dock. ere is no power or water available, but dockage is free as long as you eat at the restaurant, and who doesn’t mind eating out two nights in a row? e seafood boils are out of this world. Once you’ve feasted, enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep in this beautiful, protected creek.

Day 3 PALATKA, FLORIDA Make another 30-mile run the next day to the floating downtown dock in Palatka. is little town has a lot of potential, and hopefully someone will take the beautiful old buildings near the waterfront park and return them to their former splendor. You can visit the Bronson Mulholland House (bronsonmulhollandhouse.com), a lovely riverfront home built by abolitionist and former circuit judge isaac Bronson in the mid-1800s. Palatka may be best known for 146-acre ravine gardens state Park. is wonderful retreat features a 1.8-mile driving loop, or hike the trails to spot any number of species of birds and butterflies. ravine gardens is famous for its stunning 20

Ravine Gardens is noted for its brillant displays of azaleas.

azaleas. Pets are welcome in the park on a leash. Once you’ve hiked to the gardens and back, try Angel’s, the oldest diner in Florida, just a few blocks from the Palatka city docks. You can also anchor out and dinghy ashore or tie up downriver at Boathouse Marina (386-328-2944, boathousemarina.com), which has 40 slips, restrooms and laundry facilities and WiFi. in operation since the 1930s, Angel’s is renowned for its burgers, fries and onion rings and is open 24/7. not in the mood for burgers? e floating dock at local hotspot Corky Bell’s seafood is just a short run upriver in east Palatka. Dockage

is complimentary with your meal. And don’t miss the Magnolia Cafe before departing Palatka. e menu showcases locally sourced foods and wonderful organic, fair-trade sweetwater coffee. Delicious. it serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and dinner ursday through saturday. Daily specials are announced on its Facebook page. it doesn’t get better than this — cruising in protected waters, visiting quaint, small towns and eating in great restaurants. e only thing better might be the beautiful lower st. Johns river. But we’ll save that for another trip. m l

Cruising WitH > RANDY HINDEN

Dynamic Duo Plus Randy and Peri Hinden took their 55 Fleming, Dynamic Duo Plus, to the Bahamas during the summer of 2013 with a full crew on board including their teenagers, Max, Fallyn and Jenna. Marinalife members since 2007, Randy and Peri were previous owners of a 1996 Ocean Yacht 48SS, which they bought in 2001 and sold in 2012. ey keep their 55 Fleming, Dynamic Duo Plus at Sunset Harbour Yacht Club in Miami Beach. Here is their story: AND WE’RE OFF TO BIMINI, BAHAMAS We awoke to a beautiful morning in Miami Beach. We left sunset Harbour Yacht Club for Bimini at 6:10 a.m. Our ultimate desintination was the exumas. e bridge operator opened the bridge early for us. We started to cruise through government Cut. it was a bit choppy, but things finally calmed down as we approached Bimini — 40 nautical miles in and four hours later! We noticed that the water was gatorade blue as we pulled into the docks of resorts World Bimini. My son, Max, rented us a golf-cart to get around — the main mode of transportation on the island. some people bling them out like they would any other hot-rod with custom grilles, booming stereo systems and big, funky tires. Once we cleared customs and we were approved to fly the Bahamian flag, we headed to a pristine beach behind the swimming pool. getting to the beach was a little hairy — with treacherous staircases that didn’t quite reach the ground. But it was worth the trek. e water was even warm enough for my wife, Peri, to venture in! en we relaxed around the pool for a while, and i enjoyed a glass of Cuban rum, something i can’t get at home. We arrived back to the dock in time to greet the arrival of M/Y Bimini, a 58 Viking sport owned by my dad’s brother and sister-in-law, uncle Bernie and Aunt Jackie. We put together an impromptu cocktail party and enjoyed rum drinks and soulful tunes. 22

marinalife.com

The Hindens (from left): Peri, Jenna, Max, Fallyn and Randy.

BIMINI TO CHUB CAY, BAHAMAS We pulled away from the docks of resorts World Bimini at 7 a.m. At around 11:30 a.m., M/Y Bimini passed us — i have to admit, at that moment i missed the speed of our old boat cruising 27 knots. We traveled 85 nautical miles through the northwest Passage headed to Chub Cay. e area is treacherous with sunken wrecks and interspersed areas of shallow water. right after we pulled into Chub Cay resort & Marina, Max caught a shark off the back of the boat — probably 6 or 8 feet. Lucky catch (and release)! We ate dinner at the little restaurant at the marina and enjoyed conch chowder, conch fritters and cracked conch — the specialties of the house.

PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS We pulled off the dock from Chub Cay and headed roughly 38 nautical miles southeast towards nassau. storm clouds threatened in the distance over nassau. M/Y Bimini raced by us through the choppy waters, and four uneventful hours later, we entered nassau Harbour and docked at Hurricane Hole Marina, just in time for a severe thunderstorm. We walked over to the Atlantis for dinner at Murray’s Deli and explored the property. Max played the slot machines at the Atlantis Casino, and the girls headed to the aquarium. unfortunately, the forecast did not look favorable for our journey to continue to the exumas, but we were fortunate to be on Paradise island, with full access to provisions and transportation.

EXPLORING NASSAU e following day, after walking around the main shopping district on Bay street, we headed to a local café for lunch — filled with both tourists and locals. On the menu: jerk chicken and conch. We later toured John Watling’s rum Distillery, which is housed in a beautiful old estate dating to 1789, in historic downtown nassau. e building and its grounds were used in the James Bond movie, “Casino royale.”

Enroute to Chub Cay, taken from M/Y Bimini as it sped by. Beautiful scenery and fun attractions were part of the adventure at Atlantis Resort.

THE ATLANTIS RESORT We parted ways with M/Y Bimini as it cruised east toward eleuthera and we moved our boat over to the Atlantis resort for the second part of our trip. e mega yachts in the marina gave us a taste of what it would be like in Monaco. ey were spectacular! e following day, we saw that the weather forecast was not conducive to cruising out of nassau, so we enjoyed being “stuck” at the Atlantis. if weather keeps one from cruising, this isn’t a bad place to be marooned. rumor has it, Oprah was there. Although the sun was out the next few days, the wind was blowing and it rained intermittently, we spent a lot of time at the water park. We were on top of e Abyss waterslide when we spotted M/Y Bimini approaching nassau, on its way back from a few days at eleuthera. soon after they docked, a huge squall suddenly moved through. When we got back to the docks, i poured myself a rum drink with pineapple juice, coconut milk and my new John Watling's rum. i could get used to this …

Florida, or strike out and cruise back ourselves. is was very different cruising from what we have been used to along the east Coast. Cruising between Chub Cay and Bimini would be eight hours in the middle of nowhere, with nowhere to duck in. We now cruised too slow to outrun a storm. Boating is always weather dependent, and safety comes first.

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE uncle Bernie and Aunt Jackie (M/Y Bimini) joined us at the waterpark. at evening, we threw a birthday celebration for Aunt Jackie, aboard Bimini. Fallyn and Jenna baked mini-cakes filled with fresh whipped cream and chocolate chips, and we all enjoyed watching videos. We had spent an inordinate amount of time checking the weather and ruminating about what to do. e weather the past week had been extremely unusual for the Bahamas this time of year. tropical storm Chantal was potentially heading straight for us. Our anxiety began to rise. e debate was whether to keep Dynamic Duo in nassau and hire a captain to take it back to

DEPARTING As we were ready to pull out of the docks, the generator started and everything stowed, we listened to discussions on the docks, and realized we were more comfortable flying out of nassau. so we arranged for a captain to take care of the boat in case of Chantal and take it back to Miami Beach. We breathed a sigh of relief and enjoyed the last of our days in paradise. When the captain we hired told us the crossing back to Miami Beach was very rough, we knew we made the right decision. m l To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/hindencruise.

George Bassett >>

“It’s been one hell of a wonderful ride” — George Bassett is retiring after 30 years at the helm of the Nantucket Boat Basin.

when the marina was constantly booked, i got a call from a charter captain (without a reservation) that said he had a ViP on board and he had to get into the marina. i told him it was full and i started getting calls from senators and congressmen and finally i found out the ViP was [Former Ford president and Chrysler CeO] Lee iacocca. My boss called me into his office soon after and asked if it was true that i had turned away Lee iacocca. When i said yes he pounded his fist on the table and said, “at’s the way i want my marina to be run.” What is your favorite pizza topping?

Onions and peppers. Tell us your biggest fish tale.

Where were you born?

Brockton, Mass. — where boxer rocky Marciano was born and raised. How did you get into the marina business?

i came into nantucket Harbor as the captain of an 82-foot Coast guard Cutter. At the time, the harbormaster of nantucket Boat Basin was Joe Lopes. He and i struck up a conversation and he mentioned he would be retiring soon and that i should apply for the job. ree interviews later, i got the job. What is the first thing you are going to do after you retire?

My only definite plan right now is to fly to Fort Lauderdale the day after i retire to spend a month with my son, george iii. What is the craziest thing that has happened at the marina?

My wife sharon, was the angler on this tale. in the Bahamas she was struggling with a catch and when she got it closer we could see that a tiger shark had tried to eat the yellow fin tuna she caught. in the end the shark got half and we got half. Clam chowder or beef stew?

Clam chowder in the summer and beef stew in the winter.

>

Besides fishing, what other activities do you enjoy?

i love skiing in new england. When i turned 50, i learned to ski with my kids. What is your beverage of choice?

at is easy — Bacardi Limon (lots of it) with splash of cranberry and soda and no fruit (it takes up too much room). What is the most important thing on your desk right now?

e 227 handwritten thank-you notes that i have written in the last month to send to customers who have been to nantucket Boat Basin. If your boat broke down and you only had one tool with you, which one would you hope it was?

Water pump pliers — a great universal tool. Who is the most famous person that ever stayed at the marina?

nantucket gets lots of celebrities, but three who had an impact on me are: [Former British Prime Minister] Margaret atcher, [Former First Lady] Laura Bush and [longtime companion to Jacqueline Kennedy] Maurice tempelsman. m l

George accomplished a lot in his 26 years in the Coast Guard and 30 years spent as manager at Nantucket Boat Basin. Here are a few of his accomplishments: • Interstate Hotel Corporations Manager of the Year award (1995) • “Mr. Hospitality” of the year award from the Massachusetts Governors Council on Travel & Tourism (1997) • Best Marina Offshore Magazine (2008) • Best Marina Northeast Boating Magazine (2009) • Marina Dock Age Magazine Best Marina (2013) • Marinalife Best Marina (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014)

St. Augustine: CAPITAL OF SPANISH FLORIDA BY C A P T. J E F F W E R N E R

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S.

The Spanish expeditions of discovery and conquest of the New World always had a patina of religious fervor to them. The conquistadors were devout Catholics and their armies were accompanied by priests, but it was gold and silver that they worshipped.

30

e spaniards had a penchant for naming their discoveries based on the Catholic pantheon of saints or the holy days of their calendar. When Juan Ponce de Leon sighted land east of the Bahamas in 1513, he named it La Florida, as it was easter season and a holiday known as Pascua Florida was being celebrated back in seville. Pearls, gems, silver, gold, sugar, spices and lumber from north and south America made spain the wealthiest country in europe. e value of riches that sailed into spain’s ports each year was staggering. in today’s dollars, the spanish crown valued these new World treasures at $600 million for the year 1550 alone— within 50 years, it more than quadrupled to $2.5 billion per year. ese riches did not go unnoticed by other monarchies, particularly those in France and england. in 1555, the French sacked and burned Havana, Cuba, the consolidation and departure port for all treasure galleons returning to spain since Columbus’s time. in response to this looting, King Phillip ii of spain devised a convoy system to bring the remaining wealth of of the Maya and inca empires back to his country and appointed Pedro Menendez de Aviles as Captain general of the Fleet of the indies to oversee this enterprise. several years later, the Wars of religion ignited across France, claiming the lives

the mission. Menendez landed 30 miles south of Fort Caroline on Florida’s east coast on August 28th, the feast day of st. Augustine of Hippo, and named the inlet and surrounding territory san Agustin in honor of the fourth-century theologian and philosopher. As soon as supplies were unloaded from his ships and a rough fortification built, Menendez marched his troops north and surprised the defenders of Fort Caroline with a dawn raid. e defenders were easily overwhelmed and killed. eir bodies were then hung from trees with a sign inscribed, “Hanged, not as Frenchmen, but as heretics.” At the same time the spanish had marched on Fort Caroline, a group of French soldiers sailed from that fort to attack the newly established st. Augustine. strong tropical storms hampered their ship’s ability to maneuver, and the soldiers were shipwrecked slightly south of st. Augustine. A spanish patrol soon found the survivors and the Frenchmen surrendered. But Menendez executed them forthwith, and the inlet where this massacre occurred is now known by the name Matanzas, spanish for “killings.”

of between 2 million and 4 million Catholics and the Protestants known as Huguenots. in 1564, a Huguenot explorer led a group of 200 French settlers to the mouth of the st. Johns river in spanish Florida and established Fort Caroline near present day Jacksonville. e colonists were befriended by the local timicua tribe, and rather than become self-sufficient, the colony relied on the timicua for food. some of the settlers complained about the hard labor necessary to make their pioneering venture a success, and within a year a group of them deserted, commandeered a ship and sailed to the gulf of Mexico to raid the riches-filled spanish galleons. ose Protestant French pirates, who first squatted in Catholic spanish Florida and now preyed on spanish ships, were too much for the spanish king. not only were these brigands heretics, they endangered the passage of the Fleet of the indies. e pirates and Fort Caroline had to be eliminated. in 1565, the king of spain sent a force to destroy the French settlement of Fort Caroline, with Menendez as admiral of

ese days, Matanzas inlet is also a little dicey for boaters. small skiffs, tenders and personal watercraft are about all that can safely navigate its shoal waters, and local knowledge is worth seeking out. to the north, the red-and-white striped safe-water buoy at the entrance to st. Augustine inlet leads to a safe passage for yachts. But due to the constant shifting sands, cruisers entering this inlet should navigate with prudence, especially when wind and current oppose each other. Again, seeking local knowledge is advisable. Make your dock reservation at the Municipal Marina in the shadow of the recently renovated Bridge of Lions, or at Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor. today, st. Augustine is recognized as the oldest continuously occupied

european settlement in the united states. ere are two major historic sites in the city that reflect its spanish heritage: the Castillo de san Marcos, the oldest masonry fortress in the continental u.s., and the Cathedral Basilica, which celebrates the first Catholic parish on u.s. soil. History abounds in this city, but one need not look back only to the european colonization. in more recent times, the 1880s, Henry Flagler changed the face of st. Augustine by developing it into a winter resort for wealthy northerners. en it was Martin Luther King Jr., in 1964, who worked to break the color line and made st. Augustine a pivotal city for peaceful protests during the civil rights movement. m l

he world of a weekend transient cruiser is far different than that of an extended cruiser. My career has me up early every weekday, often far away from where i left my boat the weekend before. But whether it’s by train or plane, my fiancée, sandra, and i enjoy a new adventure every weekend when we return to our vessel, Defining Moment, a 50-foot sport Bridge Marquis. in late April 2014, Defining Moment began its northward journey from Miami to new York City. if you love a sense of freedom and adventure, plus shared experiences with friends and family, then hop aboard as i recount that ride.

Andrew Levy takes the wheel for another adventure with his boat, Defining Moment, and his fiancée, Sandra.

Left: The Hamilton-Turner Inn located on Lafayette Square in downtown Savannah, Ga. is known as the “Grand Victorian Lady,” and dates back to 1873. Above: Chalmers Street, located in the heart of downtown Charleston, S.C., is the longest remaining cobblestone street in the entire city.

As luck would have it, there was a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral that evening, which we enjoyed from the top of Defining Moment just after sunset.

First, we took our time cruising the iCW from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, finally tying up at Bahia Mar Beach resort Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, with easy access to the beach, marine supply stores and Las Olas Boulevard’s dining and shopping. From Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach, my preference is actually to stay outside the iCW and enter West Palm Beach through the Lake Worth inlet. From Palm Beach, we reached Cape Canaveral in one day. As luck would

have it, there was a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral that evening, which we enjoyed from the top of Defining Moment just after sunset. in downtown Jacksonville, we docked at river City Marina to meet local friends for lunch. in mid-June we embarked on our next leg — from Jacksonville, Fla. to savannah, ga. Due to the strong current in the savannah river, we stayed outside of town on the Wilmington river at Morningstar Marina at Bahia Bleu. Downtown savannah is loaded with

fabulous restaurants, bars and shops. i got a kick out of stopping by Chippewa square, site of the famous park bench scenes in “Forrest gump.” We enjoyed a morning swim off nearby tybee island before a quick cruise north to Hilton Head, s.C., where we docked at Harbour town Yacht Basin. e marina offers great access to lovely bike paths and the Hilton Head experience. We were a bit behind schedule, so we decided to stay only a day and then continue north to charming Charleston, where we explored the area by WINTER 2015

From there we proceeded to gorgeous Beaufort, n.C. Because it was now mid-June, the weather patterns made the outside run more enticing. e leg from Beaufort to norfolk, Va., took us about 10 hours at a cruising speed of 26 knots. We had an exciting time rounding Cape Hatteras — also known as the graveyard of the Atlantic, due to sudden 20-knot winds, but eventually we pulled safelyinto rudee’s inlet in Virginia Beach. One of our goals was to make it to Washington, D.C., with Defining Moment for the July 4 fireworks. rounding a bend in the Potomac river, our nation’s 40

Afterward, we cruised north to the Baltimore Marine Center at Lighthouse Point and feasted on local steamed crabs. You can spend months exploring the Chesapeake’s islands and towns, each with its own history and atmosphere. We vowed to return but meanwhile pushed onward to the C&D Canal and then the Delaware Bay. is was a very enjoyable leg to navigate, and it was an easy cruise into the Cape May Canal. Cape May, n.J., is a quaint Victorian shore town. Both south Jersey Marina and Canyon Club Marina are great places to tie up. Our next stop was the Jersey coast’s Manasquan inlet. it had been a year since Hurricane sandy devastated the area, and there was still lots of construction

happening. Hoffman’s Marina, in Brielle, offered a convenient place to dock. Later, we rounded new Jersey’s sandy Hook and came into new York City through the Ambrose Channel. e ferry and shipping traffic can get hectic around southern Manhattan, where the east and Hudson rivers merge. extreme caution and concentration are warranted as you wave to Miss Liberty. We docked at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, n.J., just across the river from Manhattan. e location was perfect and offered a full-service marine center with easy access to new York City via the Path train. We also knew that this would be a great base from which to begin the next phase of this ongoing journey: exploring the Hudson river, Long island sound and the south shore of Long island. m l To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/levycruise.

Dive Bars Friends in Low Places some spots would bristle at being called a dive bar, others wear it as a badge of honor. Meet some of the loudest, rowdiest, most fun establishments on the water. BY D O U G S I M M O N S

Flora-Bama Pensacola, Florida Without doubt the root’n toot’n-nest dive bar on our list, Flora-Bama is like a nonstop beach party housed in a building designed by M.C. escher. e all-wood, ship-like structure towers over the sand with multiple levels, stairways and decks — most of them facing the big dance floor and stage. Live music happens daily, sometimes several times a day, and the crowd certainly isn’t shy (clotheslines draped with bras hang from the

balconies). Outside, a tent regularly hosts wet t-shirt and bikini contests. e annual interstate Mullet toss, where Florida and Alabama residents throw fish back and forth across the state line, is legendary. Flora-Bama has its own marina (251-980-5222, fishflorabama.com), or you can dock at nearby Holiday Harbor Marina (850-492-0555, myholidayharbor.com) just a short ride down the Old river.

Bert’s Bar & Grill Matlacha, Florida

Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Café Fort Myers Beach, Florida Don’t be fooled by the froufrou name. Bonita Bill’s is a dive of the highest (lowest?) order. ere’s nothing fancy about the joint, which is open air, cash only and dog friendly, so wear your flip-flops and drive your boat right up to the pier. An authentic south Florida atmosphere draws a congenial crowd of locals (many live-aboard boaters have their sailboats moored in the pass out back) and returning customers who can’t get enough of the cheap food and drink, daily entertainment and ocean breezes. e grouper sandwich is said to be one of the best anywhere. Dock at the restaurant or just a short dingy ride away at Pink shell Beach resort & Marina (888-222-7465, pinkshell.com) for some pampering. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Bert’s has had a colorful 70 years of history. One of its two buildings started out as a “sweet shoppe” in the 1930s. stories abound about the other building, the “hotel,” being a brothel and, later, a gentleman’s club. if only the walls could talk. ese days the waterfront hideaway is known for its ultra laid-back vibe, “million dollar view,” dockside dining, live music and a menu that features seafood platters, burgers and sandwiches, wings and homemade chips — no fries. Bring your rod and reel and fish off the back deck. e village of Matlacha has a notable artists’ community and is close by the cruising meccas of sanibel and Captiva islands. A good base of operations is Olde’ Fish House Marina (239-282-9577, oldfishhousemarina.com), and it is less than a half mile walk from Bert’s.

The Green Parrot Key West, Florida We all know what goes on in Key West. so, when we say e green Parrot is the oldest and divey-est bar in town, well, that’s saying something. A shady ambiance operates in stark contrast to the sunwashed beauty of the nearby beaches. Add to that a serious curio fetish — beat up guitars, placards and other old junk cover the walls — a self-serve popcorn machine and root Beer Barrel shots, and you’ve got yourself a funky oasis. A few tips: Don’t wear a collared shirt (tourist!). get there at 5:30 p.m. on weekends for the 90-minute sound check before the band really starts. And “no snivelling.” e marinas at the Bight are within walking and biking distance, including Conch Harbor Marina (305-294-2933, conchharbormarina.com).

Along with owner/musician eric stone, Bitchin can sometimes be found hanging out here. Maybe it’s the awesome pub food — street tacos like you’d find in small-town Mexico and hog handles, which are smoked pork shanks rolled in a spicy jerk sauce. Maybe it’s the dark ‘n’ stormy served in a tall glass or the signature dockside punch. Perhaps it’s because of the adjacent live-aboard marina. Whatever. Just be there. tie up at Dockside tropical Bar or at Marathon Marina & Boatyard (305-743-6575, marathonmarinaandresort.com) and dinghy over. it is just on the other end of Boot Key Harbor.

Archie’s Seabreeze Ft. Pierce, Florida

Alabama Jack’s Key Largo, Florida this is as “Old Florida” as it gets. And by Old Florida i mean faded, tilting, seaside cabin built on two floating barges. What Alabama Jack’s lacks in frills it makes up for in dependability: it’s been a watering hole for boaters, anglers and bikers heading from Miami to Key West and back since 1947. Dawg, the bartender, has been there forever — so stay on his good side if you ever want to come back. the huge, handmade conch fritters are a must, as are the homemade conch salad and lima bean soup. there’s live music on the weekends, and there’s no shortage of entertainment from the crusty old guys at the bar. stay at Ocean reef Club (800-741-7333, oceanreef.com) for all the amenities this dive does without.

Archie’s started in 1947 as a military shed that served beer to soldiers stationed in south Beach. en, in 1994, Patty Mcgee bought the place and put her heart and soul into making it a fixture of the local beach bar scene. e ramshackle assortment of palm trees, umbrellas and bar areas sits across from the Atlantic, with license plates on the walls inside and marine paraphernalia scattered all around. Archie’s is known for its killer burgers, which you can wash down with $1 happy hour drafts. ere’s live music most evenings, plus the biannual Hogg Wild festival with all-day bands and vendors. stay at the Ft. Pierce City Marina (772-464-1245, fortpiercecitymarina.org) located on the west side of the iCW, about a seven-minute drive away.

You can dock right at rivers edge Marina (904-827-0520, 29riversedgemarina.com) on the west side of the iCW.

it’s almost like a tale of two taverns. Outside, Lou’s Blues is a tidy, bright, two-story building with a wood deck running along the back facing the Atlantic. ere’s an open-air bar upstairs and another at ground level. inside, though, Lou’s evokes a showbiz Pizza meets biker bar feel, with a retro-futuristic raised stage, a dance floor, bric-a-brac décor, neon lights, and a wraparound balcony. every night brings live music, dancing or some other form of shenanigans (dirty bingo, anyone?). e food menu is mostly pub grub — burgers, sandwiches, apps — but, hey, pub grub! telemar Bay Marina (321-773-2468, telemarbay.com) offers a convenient berth on the iCW and is just a six-minute drive from Lou’s Blues. m l To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/divebars.

hat next? After three summer seasons cruising the eastern seaboard, my husband, Peter, and i were ready to go somewhere new. granted we hadn’t examined every port of call, but we had cruised as far north as the Canadian border along the coast of Maine and south to Florida and the Bahamas. now, we looked inward, toward the u.s. and Canadian interior. We had heard wonderful stories about the great Loop. is popular loop cruise encompasses the Hudson river, the erie Canal, the great Lakes, the Mississippi and other southbound rivers to the gulf of Mexico and then the inland waterways on the west coast of Florida and finally back up the

east Coast. Peter and i were intrigued with the Hudson river and great Lakes portion of the loop. We had heard about the picturesque 1,000 islands on the st. Lawrence seaway and the trent-severn Waterway, one of the Canadian Canal systems. We investigated several mini-loops that cruisers follow both clockwise and counterclockwise on the newYork canal system, the st. Lawrence, the Canadian Canals and Lake Champlain and realized we could design a custom trip. As we began to plan our fourth cruising season, it occurred to us that our trip could be a platform for a larger plan to take our Zimmerman 36-foot lobster boat Bee Weems to the Pacific northwest.

Peter’s ultimate dream was to cruise to Alaska in his own boat one day. e accomplishment of that dream would come true the following year, but we needed to set the stage. We developed an ambitious plan to cruise two months from Annapolis to Deluth, Minn. A trip like this would require moving almost every day to travel the 2,100 miles in 60 days. We quickly realized that we couldn’t do everything we wanted in that amount of time, so we gave up the idea of the Lake Champlain /Montreal portion, shelving this for a future trip. it helped to create a tentative float plan and break the trip into eight segments. e adventure for us really began as we headed north on the Hudson from new York City. We had been told that it wasn’t safe to begin the northbound journey until early July because of the time it takes to wash away all the debris from the spring melt after a harsh winter. For me, cruising the Hudson was like traveling through an english pastoral painting. such a contrast to the crisscross of wakes from the multitude of boats in new York Harbor. e change was almost instantaneous once we passed Manhattan island on the starboard side. e natural beauty of the Palisades came

During 160 miles from new York City to troy river the river was tranquil with an occasional small village or large mansion dotting the high banks. ere was very little boat traffic to disturb the peaceful setting. e Hudson river is a tidal estuary that flows two ways with a gentle current of 1.5 knots. At some point along the way, a distinct change from salt to sweet water occurred. We could smell the difference in the air. From that moment on we realized we would be traveling in fresh water, a new experience for us. no need to check the tide charts anymore. Our first stop was under the shadow of the tappan Zee Bridge on the 4th of July. tarrytown Marina is the perfect jumping off place to visit Kykuit, the rockefeller estate and Lyndhurst Castle. We were fortunate enough to participate in an 18th-century independence Day celebration at sunnyside, home of Washington irving. On the other side of the river is the town of nyack, where we tied up at the nyack Yacht Club to explore the birthplace of the American realist painter, edward Hopper. As we continued north we passed 52

Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park, where the Culinary institute of America and the residences of the roosevelts and Vanderbilts sit high above the river. our first lock in troy. We were the only boat in the lock, so we didn’t have to worry about fending off other vessels while grabbing hold of lines on the lock wall. e erie Canal was completed in 1862 and was an extremely busy commercial shipping waterway moving cargo from the u.s. interior to the east Coast before the railroads took over. e present Canal system rises 566 feet from the Hudson river to Lake erie through 57 locks. Our course took us through only 32 locks because we turned off at the Oswego Canal cutoff toward Lake Ontario to get to the ousand islands. Knowing that these were commercial locks i envisioned bustling industrial cities along the way, but instead most of the canal system is scenic and rural. From the Oswego canal we traveled east over a small portion of Lake Ontario to reach the opening of the st. Lawrence river and the ousand islands. e 1,864 islands are defined as being above water 365 days a year and supporting at least one living tree. e islands are charming, some with houses that cover every inch of surface, many with two-door vessel “garages” sheltering beautiful

At some point along the way, a distinct change from salt to sweet water occurred. We could smell the difference in the air.

As we approached Albany i was a bit sad that we were leaving behind the quiet beauty of the Hudson, but i was excited to begin the next portion of our journey that would involve learning to negotiate the locks of the historic erie Canal. An easy-to-read sign pointed out the turnoff to the west from the Hudson. Before entering the erie Canal system we successfully navigated

vintage wooden boats. e most famous islands are home to the singer and Boldt Castles, popular tourist destinations definitely worth visiting. We spent our first two days on the u.s. side of the river with a visit to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, n.Y. and then crossed over to Kingston, Ontario, passing through customs there and remaining in Canada

for the next three weeks. By the time we arrived at e trent severn Waterway we were accomplished lock masters. is Canadian lock system consists of 36 swing bridges, 41 locks, a marine railway and two hydraulic lift locks. e big difference between this system and the erie Canal is that this waterway was never designed for commercial ship traffic. e locks are much smaller and are sometimes hand turned. You only see pleasure craft here due to the maximum draft of 6 feet and a height limit of 22 feet. e locks connect a series of rivers and lakes from the st. Lawrence river to georgian Bay on Lake Huron. unlike the erie, we met other boaters waiting at the lock entrances and found this was a much more social week than any previous. After traversing the marine railway called the Big Chute, we broke out of the narrow canal system into a large open body of water, the georgian Bay region of Lake Huron. georgian Bay is dotted with 30,000 islands larger than an acre. Although the bay is vast, there are narrow, unforgiving rocky channels to negotiate. georgian Bay connects to another

region called the north Channel, which is distinguished by the Canadian shield, a granite bedrock exposed by the glaciers at the end of the last ice age about 11,000 years ago. e granite rock formations and the windswept pines are characteristic of much of the lake shoreline. e final leg of our trip began with our last lock experience at sault st. Marie, the gateway from the north Channel to Lake superior. Lake superior is 25 feet above the north Channel. it took us two hours at 15 knots just to pass through White Fish Bay at the entrance of the lake! is lake has its own weather system. it has a current that runs 1-2 knots counterclockwise. We experienced the roughest waters of our journey on this body of water. it’s very much like the ocean, over 360 miles long and 1,300 feet deep in places. Lake superior contains 10 percent of the earth’s fresh water, and it is 625 feet above sea level. Most of the time we cruised parallel to the shore line — maybe a mile or two out, but when we crossed to isle royale national Park we were out of sight of land for three hours! Most of the shoreline is covered

with evergreen trees right down to the beach. ere are miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches and no people in sight. e Apostle islands, a group of 22 islands off the Bayfield peninsula in northern Wisconsin, are the most popular cruising waters on Lake superior. Bayfield Marina was our jumping off spot and we had beautiful weather at the end of the summer season to explore the sea caves and nature trails on several of these islands. We arrived in Deluth on Labor Day weekend almost exactly two months from our start date. Peter and i had a flight back to Baltimore, but our beloved Bee Weems was loaded onto an 18-wheeler and trucked 1,700 miles to Anacortes, Washington. e journey of the past two months was just the beginning of a much greater adventure to explore the Pacific northwest and the inside Passage of Alaska in the following two years. stay tuned for our next adventure to south east Alaska. m l

Life

Soaking Up from the Water BY E L L E N H O N E Y

L

ive-aboard boater Betty robinson describes her current lifestyle of meeting new people, traveling to new places and having new adventures in six words, “soaking up life from the water.” it’s a wonderful if unexpected thing that this woman, who says she is outdoorsy and not a homebody, would be found fully living life on LiLi, her home, a 48-foot Kadey-Krogen north sea. Betty portrays her early boating experiences in new england and the Jersey shore waters as “not very serious.” During her extended career in the information technology world — 30 years at Johnson & Johnson, and then the next 15 years in it for a variety of other

56

marinalife.com

businesses — weekend boating was a very social, marina-bound event. Her dock-centric lifestyle continued after she became single, and she says that when she took out the cabin cruiser she “never strayed far from the slip.” But somewhere along the way, she began to think about spending more time on the water. Following an early retirement, Betty expanded the idea from just owning a boat into exploring the concept of living aboard. she asked herself, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Friends who had graduated into a variety of yachts brought her to a series of boat shows, and after three years of intensive research, she decided on a Kadey-Krogen. Betty’s passion for LiLi

is reflected in her voice when she relates, For anyone, the transition to living aboard is filled with opportunities and challenges. two major considerations are boat manufacturer’s post-purchase assistance and whether you possess the skills and confidence needed to handle a new vessel. Betty has been more than satisfied with Kadey-Krogen’s support throughout the purchase process. she spent as much time as she felt she needed with the commissioning staff, learning every detail of the boat. she is comfortable knowing she can call Kadey-Krogen at any time for its expertise and advice. Part of the Kadey-Krogen culture is ensuring

Jill Hautzenroeder Jill Hautzenroeder

that its buyers’ experiences be success stories, and it most certainly has one with robinson. Betty addressed ownership of LiLi as she would a new career, and she acknowledges that she probably would not have been able to do it if she were still working. retirement changed robinson’s casual water lifestyle to a “much more serious, disciplined existence.” Her early days were devoted to training, not just book learning for navigation and safety, but also hands-on experience with diagnostics, managing the engine room and dealing with hostile weather. she hired teaching captains to provide her with one-on-one instruction about her vessel. Although she has her 100-ton captain’s license, she still takes advantage of training seminars and hires captains for the legs of certain journeys to help increase her skills. ese days, more and more women are purchasing boats or initiating these endeavors with their spouses. Betty has excellent advice for those women: instead of thinking in gender terms, think about

receiving novice vs. expert instruction. Professional, low-stress training at a comfortable pace is critical, she claims. Find yourself a skilled instructor and take as much time as you need to feel capable and confident at the helm. Heading out in the wide-open waters with unskilled operators and no lane markers requires extensive preparation to remain competent and confident and to make boating more enjoyable. some things, like the weather, cannot be controlled. Capt. robinson has had a “storm or two tug at her nerves,” she says, which has made her careful enough to “go when it’s safe.” Living aboard requires a different orientation than a land-based existence. e lifestyle makes visiting with family, staying in touch with friends and finding annual medical and dental care a challenge. Betty’s answer to those issues is to go electronic, which she has done quite successfully. One of the few downsides to living alone on a yacht is the need for crew members. Finding crew is not hard, but making sure they are competent and then determining whether you want to live with them for even one leg of a cruise itinerary is more difficult. For a more extensive journey, it’s wise to have a co-captain. Juggling schedules is never an easy task, but when everything falls in place, it’s grand adventures ahead. Betty and her various crew members travel the east Coast, from rhode island to the Florida Keys. summers are spent

exploring newport and Long island in the northeast or wandering the Chesapeake Bay waters from her summer season homeport of Annapolis, Md. e trips along the coast are never rushed, allowing the crew to enjoy the coastline from the yachter’s perspective. normally LiLi is based for the winter at the Marathon Marina & Boatyard in the Florida Keys, but Capt. robinson and crew have also managed to take extended cruises to the Bahamas and turks and Caicos. Living life at trawler speed provides ample opportunity to enjoy time in port, and Betty thrives on exploring spots along the way. she loves running across arts festivals, visiting local museums and just soaking up the unique local flavors of each location. And she enjoys not just the sense of community in the yachting world, but also its camaraderie, and she expresses enthusiasm about meeting new people and running into familiar faces. recently Capt. Betty and her crew were tied up in st. simons island, ga., having a great time and eagerly anticipating exploring Cumberland island with its isolated beauty and abundant wildlife. e trip Betty is most hoping will materialize is a group cruise to Cuba. she wants to “dance in Havana wearing a long flowered skirt with a parrot on it.” given her history of determination and preparation, no doubt it will happen. m l

Bradenton, Florida From Anna Maria Island head east to Bradenton, Fla. for overnight dockage at twin Dolphin Marina (941-747-8300, twindolphinmarina.com) on Manatee River and the famous Riverwalk Park. With a renaissance-like redevelopment of the waterfront, Bradenton transformed its downtown seafront into an inviting outdoor river walkway bound by lush botanical gardens, a 400-seat outdoor amphitheater, a multicolor splash fountain, a fishing pier, a tidal basin, outdoor seating, beach volleyball courts and a skate park. Don’t be surprised to find a bride and groom along with their wedding entourage out for pictures. Across from twin Dolphin Marina is the entrance to Old Main Street (12th Street West) and on 10th Street West is the South Florida Aquarium, Planetarium and History Museum. Meet Manatee County’s official mascot, “Snooty,” the world’s oldest manatee in captivity. From October through May, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. downtown Bradenton is host to a farmers’ market, where you’ll find locally grown fruits and vegetables, freshly harvested seafood and resident artists and craftspeople selling their wares. For a fail-safe dinner aboard, local chefs and restaurateurs demonstrate how to prepare some of their signature dishes from ingredients you can purchase in the market. m l

Docking can be tricky, but boat poles can be a big help.

f you’ve ever sipped a beverage while sitting in a waterside restaurant then you’ve probably witnessed some awesome docking … sometimes in a can’t-look-away-from-the-wreck awesome. to avoid being the star of a Youtube video you will want to use these docking tricks and tips, many of which only require a bit of practice.

DOCKING NEOPHYTES As with anything worth doing, a little bit of effort goes a long way, and practice will enhance that effort! For the first few times you take out your new boat try to do it when the marina is not busy and few boats are underway. A weekday morning when the tide is slack creates the best learning environment. Don’t forget to tell the marina staff that you will be in and out of your slip and won’t require any help. You will feel less pressure if you have no audience as you practice your close quarters maneuvering. If you are fortunate enough to work with a training captain, start your very first time at the helm well after the boat is out of its slip. Discovering what it takes to slow, stop and actually reverse your boat combined with how it is affected by tide, current and wind are the first steps to successful docking. Performing these skills while away from the dock allows a new helmsman to build docking confidence without concern for the occasional oops! Soon these skills will become instinctive with diligent practice.

current to help your maneuvering. Don’t fight the force. Let the force be with you.

MARINA APPROACH

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Whether this will be your home port or your temporary tie-up for a weekend adventure, there’s a first time in every marina. Everything looks different from the water so try to learn as much as you can before coming in to your slip. One easy way to explore your options is to stop at the fuel dock first. Fill your fuel tanks or pump out the holding tank then take a walk over to your assigned slip. Scan the surrounding docks for protruding bow pulpits or swim platforms that may require extra maneuvering. Is the power pedestal positioned that you must go bow or stern in? Will the starboard or port side be against the finger pier? Is the pier floating or fixed, as each calls for different fender requirements? For those boaters in tidal areas, be sure to see from which direction and how fast the current is moving. You may need to compensate and overshoot your slip, allowing the dominant force of wind or

While every helmsman should become adept at maneuvering with engines only, it’s not cheating to use the tools you have at your disposal. Bow and stern thrusters are a bonus when you must slide right into a side-tie slip, but it’s important to know their limitations. Get comfortable with how much power is available, either battery- or generator-assisted hydraulic thruster. Remember that pilings are your friend, unless they are cement! It’s OK to lay your boat’s rub rail against a sturdy wood piling, sometimes using it as a fulcrum when the wind or tide challenges your maneuvers. And for good measure, have a walking fender — one that’s loose and easy to grab — ready for your mate to strategically place when contact is unavoidable. Boat poles can make the difference between getting that line over the piling or launching a dinghy to make it happen. One pole is essential, two is preferred, and

Headsets are a great way to help with docking communications.

three assures you will have a boat pole available when the others go in the drink! A floating boat pole is wonderful, but you still need a second pole to retrieve the first. Dock lines with large loops are terrific for placing over pilings without choking them. A choked line is difficult to remove from a piling and may need to be left behind. Either splice in a large enough loop or learn to properly tie a bowline, which will create a loop of the size you desire. Many boaters purchase prepackaged cut and spliced dock lines. at’s usually fine for smaller boats. Be sure to have long enough lines to spring forward and aft to deal with tidal changes once you’ve landed safely and are permanently securing your lines.

BREAST VS. SPRING LINE is is always a great topic for a dockside discussion, but our first docking line is almost always a breast line. is docking line is attached to the centermost cleat on your boat and unlike the spring line, the breast line is secured at the dock perpendicular to the boat and as short WINTER 2015

as possible. is is a temporary line that prevents the boat from blowing off the dock or moving too far forward or aft. Once you have successfully landed, readjust this line to become a spring line. With a bit of practice the breast line can often be secured to the dock without your mate ever leaving the boat. no jumping from the side deck and no dockside help needed! But if you do require help, $5 makes a nice thank you to the marina dockhands.

CREW COMMUNICATIONS Unless you are single handing, it is essential to keep your crew in the loop. Plan your docking strategy, then share the plan with your crew, agree to it and be prepared for changes. It helps if you walk in each other’s deck shoes and understand the responsibilities of each crew member but minimally you must find a way to communicate what is occurring — breast line is ON! when the line is secured or Secure stern line first! when the helmsman feels a change in the plan is required. So how do you talk when the wind is howling or your boat is too big to hear each other clearly? technology is a wonderful thing and options are plentiful. 70

In addition to a two-way hailer there are head-set selections for every budget. Be sure you recognize the possibility of snagging wires and cumbersome battery packs so try before you buy when possible. After you become competent with each other’s roles then short, key words can help describe a multitude of situations. no need for long explanations to get the job done. Docking is an art that can be refined with practice, or for some lucky boaters it is plain ole raw talent. In the Heart of Ten Thousand Islands

Fishing the flats is best done early morning when the sun is low. Some catches consist of Snook, Redfish, Jack Creval, Ladyfish to name a few.

Named FOR SaINT maRk, the Christian evangelist, marco Island is the largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, offering year-round opportunities for excellent backwater, near-shore and offshore fishing. The shallow water among this realm of Ten Thousand Islands provides a vast habitat

fishing. depending on the species sought and season, casting artificial lures, plastic baits and natural baits will draw exciting strikes from predator species in shallow water among this maze of marsh and grass. Here you’ll also enjoy scenic views as well as encounters with rare birdlife and marine mammals such as the majestic manatee.

and artificial reefs among depths of only 75 to 100 feet, where you can tangle with numerous species of grouper and snapper, kingfish (king mackerel) little tunny (bonito), cobia, permit and sharks. keep in mind when planning an offshore trip this time of the year, winter’s breezes can make for a sporty day on the water so you should plan accordingly. For those who wish to wet a line but stay ashore, numerous piers and bridges abound and provide cover for pompano, sea trout, sheepshead and jacks as well as Spanish mackerel and ladyfish as they lie in the shadows waiting to ambush an easy meal.

Tackle Tip — Drag Setting Whether you’re shallow-water angler or bluewater fanatic, an important part of tackle preparation includes a proper drag setting on the reel. a general rule of thumb is drag resistance should be set at approximately 25 percent of the rated breaking strength of the line. In other words, if your reel, whether spinning or conventional, is spooled with 30-pound test, the drag setting should be

approximately 7.5 to 8 pounds. This will allow for enough resistance to tire your quarry while also preventing a broken line. additionally, keep in mind as spool diameter decreases due to a large amount of line in the water, drag will increase significantly so you may need to back off on the drag during prolonged battles with large gamefish. m l To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/marcoisland.

Aquatic Theater You would think that the last thing I’d want to do on my day off was jump on a boat. For the past 14 years I’ve lived onboard various yachts, but my days are busy inside the boat cooking for guests and crew, so when we arrived in Costa Rica the first thing I did was look for a guide with a boat to show me all I’d missed. We hadn’t motored more than 100 feet from the black volcanic sand of the beach into the bay when Herardo pointed over the water. 74

A Chef’s adventure in Costa Rica BY V I C TO R I A A L L M A N

He swung the bow of the boat toward the mouth of the bay. two islands covered in a vibrant green canopy of trees blocked the waves of the Pacific and the view of endless blue, but I doubted the serene beauty was what had the man excited. Suddenly, the water exploded and the ridged mouth of a humpback whale shot into the air. to the right, the water opened again and a smaller, less wrinkled identical mouth broke the surface. I swiveled on the wood bench,

clutching the rail and stared in awe. e massive body seemed to hover half out of the water like it was suspended by invisible marionette strings before arching backwards and splashing into the calm water. White water rocketed up and sprayed the calf as he too sunk back into the bay. “And you thought they were myths.” My husband’s eyes twinkled the same color as the water around us. His smile created as many ridges around his eyes

as those on the underside of the whale. “I’ve never seen a whale.” I told Herardo, knowing he couldn’t understand me but hoping he sensed the excitement in my voice. Patrick laughed. “We used to see them every morning in tahiti. ey were everywhere.” “Yes, but you never came and got me.” “You were busy making breakfast.” “For you!” My voice squealed. “I was making breakfast for you!” Herardo laughed. He may not understand what we were saying, but the exasperated banter of husband and wife was universal. He pointed again. One of the mama whale’s pectoral fins sliced out of the water and rolled through the air. Herardo slowed the boat and leaned against the center console to watch the show he’d probably seen a thousand times. As if sensing they had to make up for my years of missed sightings, the humpback and her calf breached, jumped and frolicked in the water for the next 20 minutes while the roasting sun rose higher, and I swore I’d leave the galley more if this was what I’d see. Patrick fidgeted in the seat beside me, eager to get to the surf spot of our

destination. He’d seen plenty of whales. His life on the outside of the boat was much different from mine inside. “Vámonos!” Herardo swung the panga away from the aquatic Cirque du Soleil and headed for open water. We sailed past red rock cliffs and seaside caves. It wasn’t long before the next show started. A school of spotted Pacific dolphin leapt across the bow and raced in our wake. eir white spots flashed in the sunlight as we sped to the wave. Patrick tossed his board into the water, vaulted over the side and paddled toward shore before Herardo had the anchor down, leaving just the guide and me to divvy up lunch. Herardo lifted the front hatch of the boat. e rusty hinges squeaked. He pulled a foil-wrapped dish from the ice and held it out to me. I removed the cover and peered inside. e black beans of the gallo pinto had turned the rice a grey color. Flakes of red pepper peeked out from between the grains I’d seen with every meal since we’d arrived in Costa Rica. “tu cocina?” I pointed at Herardo hoping I had the right tense but doubted it. He shook his head and held out another dish. “Mi esposa.”

With my broken Spanish and his little English I pieced together the menu his wife had cooked us. I opened the next dish to the sight of ceviche. “tu pesca?” His wide toothy smile needed no translation. I knew he’d caught the fish himself. e tang of limejuice lit up my mouth and punched through the soft delicate fish. the heat of the chilies burned my senses and awakened my hunger. is was spicier than the other versions I’d tasted along the coast. turning back to the hatch, he pulled out a coconut and machete. He swung the blade at the coconut, peeling the husk away, then tossed the coconut in the air, caught it and swung again. Hack, toss, twist, hack, toss, twist. He continued until the top of the coconut showed the white meat inside. I checked to see he still had all his fingers and smiled. He took the tip of the machete and pierced a hole in the meat of the coconut and handed it to me. I brought the coconut to my lips and drank. e cool water inside beat back the roasting sun and quenched my thirst. “Muy rica” I used the Costa Rican term to express how delicious it all was, but Herardo wasn’t listening. Instead he pointed at two sea turtles bobbing in the swell. I hung an arm over the side and trailed my fingers through the warm water. Maybe I’d never return to the galley. m l To view this article online, visit marinalife.com/ceviche.
