1. Comparison of economical performance: Switzerland - Poland 1.1 Population Poland is a diversified country not only geographically but also in terms of its social structure. As of 2011, the population of Poland was 38.5 million people. Poland’s population is almost five times larger than that of Switzerland. Poland’s population gradually decreased between 2000 and 2008 and noted a slight increase towards the end of the decade mostly due to the “baby boom”. Despite that fact, the forecasts show a reasonable risk of a demographic breakdown and consequently a decrease in population size over the next decade. Not counting Russia, Poland has the eighth largest population in Europe, and as such represents a large internal market. The population, though, is not distributed evenly geographically. The most populous regions are Mazowsze, Silesia, Wielkopolska and Małopolska. The following map presents population density in Poland.
