SIPPO enables new business for an Indonesian Agar powder processor Thanks to the three years’ participation in the Swiss Import Promotion Progamme (SIPPO), Agarindo Bogatama successfully accessed new markets in Europe, gained new customers and increased sales to the European markets by 8 %. Agar powder is a natural vegetable gelatine counterpart which is commonly used as an ingredient in desserts or as a thickener in soups, fruits preserves or ice cream. Agarindo Bogatama processes agar powder out of different types of seaweed. The company also cultures its own seaweed at marine farms located in the eastern part of Indonesia. When Agarindo Bogatama participated at the international trade fair Health Ingredients 2008 in Paris with the support of SIPPO from Switzerland Global Enterprise, they only had few customers from Europe. During this first trade fair in Europe, they established contacts with potential customers and gained new insights into the requirements of the European food industry. This enabled them to adapt their offer to the European demand. They also realized the importance of a serious preparation and follow-up and consequently invested more time and efforts in it. One year later, during their second trade fair participation at Food Ingredients 2009 in Frankfurt, Agarindo Bogatama experienced an increasing demand from European buyers for their products. The Food Ingredients 2011 trade fair was their breakthrough. European buyers showed great interest into the company’s high quality products. As a result, the company managed to increase its sales volume to Europe by 8 %. In addition to the established export markets in the US and Japan, Europa became an important market. The presence on the European market allowed the company to share more benefits with their employees. As a consequence, the company can offer much more jobs to the local communities. Thanks to their positive experience with the SIPPO programme and due to the new customer base in Europe, Agarindo Bogatama is planning to further invest into the European market and to participate at Food Ingredients trade shows as soon as more agar powder and new blends are available from their new production lines.
