The App lets iPhone® and iPod® touch users as well as AndroidTM smartphone users manage their weight and fitness, allowing consumers to see their physical activity, steps taken and calorie intake right on their device. The BodyMedia system is clinically proven to help people lose three times more weight than those that tried to lose weight on their own. The

First, for current BodyMedia FIT Armband wearers, a free app will allow them to log their food and see a snapshot of their personal Activity Manager throughout the day on their phones and select mobile devices. The information will be based upon the last sync of their Armband to the online BodyMedia FIT Activity Manager, an innovative software dashboard that collects, analyzes

Consumer Electronics Daily News and displays various body measurements. “We often hear that consumers struggle to understand how to make good food and fitness choices throughout the day,” said Christine Robins, CEO, BodyMedia. “Now, with the new BodyMedia FIT Mobile App, consumers will be able to access information to understand their calorie burn, number of steps, and activity level throughout their day. THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS ARE BACK AT CES! To learn more about this exciting night vision technology, Consumer Electronics Daily News sat down with Andy Teich, President of FLIR Systems’ Commercial Systems division. CES: Your thermal cameras have become increasingly popular as consumer electronics in the last few years. Where are they now? AT: Our thermal imaging cameras are

enjoying terrific popularity with a wide cross-section of applications, especially as a driver’s nighttime driving aid. In fact, Rolls Royce and Audi use FLIR thermal camera technology as the imaging core in the night vision cameras in their Ghost and A8 models, just as BMW has been doing for years. Our core thermal imaging technology has allowed these leading car manufacturers to add innovative safety features like automatic pedestrian detection to the core system

benefit of being able to see better at night. Our cameras are also very popular with boaters, who use FLIR’s M-Series multi-sensor thermal cameras to navigate at night, and homeowners, who use our low-cost, high-performance F-Series cameras to detect intruders. C2: PERSONAL SAFETY IN YOUR HANDS

WORLDWIDE LEADER IN COMPUTER COMPONENTS LAUNCHES AUDIO PRODUCT BRAND WITH NEW 3D 2.1 LOUDSPEAKER

TASER® Brings Protection Technology To The Forefront Of Everyday Consumers In 2009, the FBI Crime Clock calculated that every 23.9 seconds a violent crime occurred in the United States. When considering property crime, this number drops to an astounding 3.4 seconds. Even without knowing these numbers, many of us know someone who has been in a physically threatening situation. All of us can agree that having a plan for ourselves and our families around personal safety is important. Despite this, what’s surprising is that most people don’t have a planned response beyond reaching for their cell phone, should they or their families feel threatened. TASER International, a global leader in the development of safety technologies, was founded to provide solutions for exactly this issue, applying technologies to provide a safe and effective resolution to conflict. While best known for its worldwide use by law enforcement, TASER electronic control devices have been purchased by more than 225,000 consumers as their selfdefense option. The TASER® C2™ personal safety device was specifically designed to provide an option for getting away from dangerous situations by immobilizing an

attacker at a distance, giving the user time to move to safety. Many devices claim effectiveness, but TASER technologies are tested with more than 2 million uses in the field and have an excellent safety record with more than 350 research studies and reports. Unlike other products which require you to be close to the target, the TASER C2 works up to 15 feet away, so you can stay safe at a distance. Whereas options like generic “stun guns” and pepper spray claim to stop an attacker, they rely on causing pain or discomfort to be effective, and have specific areas that must be targeted. The TASER C2 works by deploying two small probes into a target to deliver powerful but safe electrical pulses that interfere with the ability to perform coordinated movement, while the device is active. This effect can be created any time there is a 4.5-inch spread between the contact points of the two probes in the target. The TASER C2 provides an automatic timing cycle to continue this result for 30 seconds, on a cycle that’s repeatable, which allows the user to set down the unit and get to safety. Full of additional features which make it safer and easy to use, the TASER C2 includes laser sight for easy aiming. Continued on Page 109

ʻKEEPING IT SIMPLEʼ & ʻJUST IN TIME INVENTORYʼ CREATE OPPORTUNITY Two consistent rules to success, “Keep It Simple” and “Just In Time Inventory,” have become the common denominator this year for Ashley Entertainment and their Spectrum brand of musical instruments. “Bringing in product from China via Long Beach and then shipping it across the country to Florida only to ship it back to customers distribution centers caused inefficiencies throughout our distribution system,” stated Richard Borden, CEO of Ashley Entertainment Corporation. Hence the company’s relocation to Henderson, Nev., where a stateof-the-art warehouse facility has been opened to facilitate and establish the company as the most efficient vendor allowing for Direct Import, POE (Point of Entry), Domestic Shipments and now

a total e-commerce solution for all classes of trade. Keeping It Simple – Logistics To date, the majority of sales have been “brick & mortar” driven by Direct Import programs so that accounts realize the greatest margin by taking advantage of efficiencies in logistics. The Ashley team maintains offices in Hong Kong staffed with a team for QC (quality control) rather than relying on “brokers” or “agents.” “We source, import, distribute and do the fulfillment. There are not a lot of layers with charges attached to our product,” stated Borden. “We control our own destiny, which is critically important when producing larger quantities and shipping on time, every time.” Stateside,

Consumer Electronics Daily News set a new company record of 179.7 dB thanks to Scott Van Riper. American Bass has claimed many other titles worldwide in the competition circuit. Each year you can depend on American Bass to provide a new product while consistently staying ahead of the competition. Our newest amplifier is the brutal 12,000 Watt VFL 1100.1. This amplifier has linking abilities, allowing you to pair it with another VFL 1100.1 for some serious power. Weighing in at 65 pounds and measuring 3 feet in length, this amplifier is

ETYMOTICʼS ETYBLU2 BLUETOOTH HEADSET DELIVERS BEST-IN-CLASS NOISE REDUCTION AND COMFORT Etymotic’s etyBLU2™ Bluetooth® headset delivers the clearest conversations of any Bluetooth headset on the market today. The clarity of the etyBLU2 headset is due to its ACCU·Noise Reduction™ Technology that reduces noise by more than 30 dB at both the microphone and the earpiece, providing “best-in-class” speech intelligibility and overall conversational clarity for both parties. The etyBLU2 continues to attract new users to Bluetooth technology and has reconnected many seasoned Bluetooth users who have been previously disappointed by the claims of other

Bluetooth devices. Despite signal processing schemes in some sophisticated headsets, proximity of the microphone to the mouth and noise-isolation in the ear remain the two key elements to successful communication in noise. Clear, private communication that does not require repetition or increased vocal effort on either end of the conversation is mandatory for today’s mobile phone user. The etyBLU2’s noise-canceling microphone picks up the talker’s voice within a narrow range and rejects background noise that comes from outside that range. The combination of an

HIFIMAN HE-6 HI-END HEADPHONES FROM HEAD-DIRECT

THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL IMAGING NOW: CONNECTED IMAGING

Head-Direct is extremely proud to introduce its own HiFiMAN HE-6 Orthodynamic headphone. This is their flagship model. These headphones are hand-built. Very serious care has been taken to ensure that they used the finest components available that were instrumental in obtaining the sound they were looking for. The HE-6 features a gold diaphragm and a highly efficient magnetic orthodynamic circuit design. Orthodynamic technology is a design in between dynamic and electrostatic headphones and speakers. Orthodynamic headphones have lower distortion than dynamic headphones and can be driven by standard dynamic headphone amplifiers. Retail at $1199 USD, the hi-end Orthodynamic (planar driver) headphones HE-6 provide a smooth presentation that is very appealing and engaging. Chris Martins, a famous audio reviewer, prefers HE-6 sound over Sennheiser HD800, although HD800 is more expensive than HE-6. In the AV-guide review Martins wrote, “Although the HD-800 is arguably one of the finest dynamic driver headphones on the market (many consider it to be a benchmark product), the HE-6 offers significantly greater performance upside, provided that you drive the HE-6

with an adequately powerful amplifier.” Potential customers have to be aware that HE-5 is not easy to drive. It will not be for use on most portable devices such as the iPod. Customers need to have a decent headphone amplifier with powerful output to drive HE-5 and get its full potential. The dedicated vacuum-tube headphone amplifiers HiFiMAN retail for $399 USD, and HE-5 and EF5 combo is also available at $899 USD. Knowledge: Dynamic headphones and electrostatic headphones Most headphones and speakers are a moving coil structure, which was called “dynamic” normally. In the middle of dynamic driver, there is a coil of wire stay in the static magnetic field. Some hi-end headphones are electrostatic design. The advantage of electrostatic headphones is that the diaphragm moving as a flat planar so that its distortion is much smaller than dynamic. However, electrostatic headphones require a high voltage amplifier, which is normally expensive, and sometimes not safe and reliable enough. The emergence of digital has clearly revolutionized the way media is consumed and shared. With film cameras, consumers were selective about when to take photos, and sharing them was constrained by film development and printing. Digital cameras have boosted the number of photos and videos consumers take to billions a year; memory making is no longer dedicated to special occasions; and viewing the newly created memories has been made easier as they can share them immediately on the camera and through e-mail and online sites. Not only are there ample choices of digital cameras and camera phones to capture memories on the fly, there is an expanding array of devices to access, browse and share memories, from smartphones to tablets and computers. The variety of capture devices and viewing and sharing devices has created a disjointed consumer experience. CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree in the Portable Products category for both the Energizer Inductive Charger, which brings consumers new freedom to charge smartphones without cords and clutter, and the Energizer Recharge Smart Charger, which provides detailed information about the charging status of batteries. The Energizer Inductive Charger brings the new universal charging standard–Qi (chee)–to consumers, for convenient charging for smartphones now and in the future, regardless of manufacturer. This exciting new development in inductive technology will ultimately enable consumers to charge any portable device 5 watts or less that is Qi-enabled or has Qi built in. This includes phones, mp3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices and more. Energizer, the very first to bring a full suite of Qi-certified products to market, launched the Inductive Charger in October with a Qi Sleeve for the iPhone® 3GS/3G and a one-time replacement Qi Door for the Blackberry® Curve™ 8900. A Qi sleeve for the popular iPhone 4 is forthcoming, and it is anticipated that consumers will soon see many more Qicompatible devices from manufacturers. The Inductive Charger also features two large charging zones that don’t require locking the device into a precise position, and a USB port to meet additional charging needs. It is being sold for $89 and the Qi door and sleeve are each sold separately for $34.99. The new Energizer Recharge Smart Charger was developed in response to consumer interest in understanding more about their batteries’ charging status, so they can avoid being caught off-guard without fully-charged batteries for video cameras, digital cameras, favorite toys and much more. It features a large LCD screen with a countdown clock displaying remaining charging time and a fuel gauge indicating the current level of power in

YURBUDS IRONMAN SERIES EARPHONES BRING TOGETHER SOUND QUALITY & COMFORT FOR EARBUDS Yurbuds™ was founded in 2008 by Seth Burgett, President and CEO, an active triathlete and Richard Daniels, Chief Operating Officer, a 22-time marathoner. Burgett and Daniels left their corporate roles and joined forces to improve personal performance. The company’s mission is to transform the athletes’ experience by providing personalized service and exceptional audio products.

Burgett developed his awardwinning idea for personally-sized earbuds while training for an Ironman® 70.3 triathlon. An avid runner and triathlete, Burgett found that his iPod® earphones were painful and very often fell out of his ears during training. Utilizing his background in minimally invasive surgical devices, Burgett and his team, including audiologists and industry design leaders,

developed a patented ergonomically designed earbud enhancer that could be personally sized through the use of imaging technology. The resulting product, yurbuds, is an ergonomically brilliant, acoustically driven headphone that is guaranteed not to fall out, even at extreme activity levels, while still providing an unparalleled level of comfort and fidelity.

CUSTOM AUTOSOUND PROVIDES FOR CLASSIC CAR ENTHUSIASTS

CEDN: You mentioned over 1,500 dealers [customers]— how do you get them?

Carl Sprague, President, Custom Autosound Mfg. Inc., talks about his company.

workers, making dreams come true. What better group of people could you ask for and work for!

CEDN: What products and services does Custom Autosound offer?

CEDN: Who are your customers?

CS: Mostly referrals from a basic core group of established vehicle restoration dealers worldwide. We advertise extensively—TV, trade publications, etc., furnishing and referring hundreds of leads monthly to our dealers, and word of mouth. All these, plus good product and service have promoted our growth, even in the last few years!

CS: Vehicle specific/OEM fit radios and speakers with modern features and other audio solutions for rods, classics and ‘drivers.’ CEDN: What do you like about the business? CS: Most dealers have much in common with my company. Starting in the ’70s’80s restoring automotive history, for your neighbors that may have had, or wanted a ’57 Chevy, T-Bird or 32 Hot Rod! Conscientious, patriotic, hard

CS: Historically, our customers have been classic vehicle and hot rod parts and restoration companies, and classic and rod enthusiasts, like us! Since we created our Secretaudio—a hide-away, RF remote controlled audio system that affords satellite, USB, iPod, CD, and more—many car audio retailers have become our customers [dealers]. They feature our Secretaudio as well as our DIN line of really unique CD playing DIN size radios that fit or easily adapt to most any ‘later’ vehicles [1980s-2000s]. Our dealers, now, can have audio for any vehicle, classic or otherwise!

DROPPED CALLS SUCK―LEARN HOW TO ELIMINATE THEM AT 2011 CES If you’re like most people, you hate dropped calls. You hate that feeling of not being connected when you know you should be. You have a mobile phone, so you’re supposed to be able to make or receive a call any time and almost anywhere, right? The whole point of carrying a mobile phone is being able to connect and stay connected pretty much whenever you want. When you can’t make a call, or your phone can’t receive an incoming call, or when a call drops, it’s more than just annoying. For a parent trying to coordinate pick-up of a child after school, being unable to connect could create a safety issue. For a businessperson, a dropped call can mean a lost sale, a deal that doesn’t close. For someone looking for a job―a situation all too common in today’s economy―a missed call from a potential employer might cost you an

opportunity to interview for a position. Fortunately, there is a solution― cellular phone signal boosters from Wilson Electronics. A signal booster from Wilson is just what it sounds like, an electronic device that boosts the cellular signal for your phone, giving you a stronger, more reliable signal. What would a stronger cell signal mean for you? This: • Extended calling range–You can connect in places where before it just wasn’t possible. • Virtually eliminate dropped calls–A stronger signal allows you to hang on to your connections. • Fewer “dead zones”– You know those times when you turn a corner

month, right from the consumers’ cameras. Eye-Fi also leverages the power of the cloud to provide a centralized, private access to consumers’ memories onthe-go with Eye-Fi View. Eye-Fi users can log onto their private Eye-Fi account from any Internet connected device to view, download and share

between an ecosystem of partners, from leading digital camera makers including Canon, Nikon and Sony, to the leading sharing sites, including Facebook, Flickr and Picasa, leading to millions of photos and videos being shared each

CEDN: Where are your products assembled and shipped from? CS: We have a staff of 30 in Fullerton, Calif., including customer service, technicians converting base radio units [five different models] to fit original classic vehicle radio openings. We welcome dealers/customers to visit the showroom and your signal suddenly disappears? They’re gone. • More reliable data transfer speeds–On a 3G network a boosted signal enables more reliable data speeds for quicker uploads and downloads―making streaming music a much more seamless experience. • Longer battery life–Searching for a cell signal or compensating for a weak signal uses lots of power and sucks away at your phone’s battery. A boosted signal means your battery lasts longer.

Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones are available at Best Buy and www .yurbuds.com. and see our array of the staff’s classic vehicles! CEDN: How do you handle your competition? CS: I don’t really acknowledge competition as it is usually illegitimate, and driven by copycats. Many have come and gone. In reality we find competition stimulating and motivating. CEDN: What are your company’s future plans? CS: We will continue to provide the best possible product, customer service, dealer support, i.e., color flyers, stand up banners, sale leads, radio displays, car show support and maintain trademark licensing—GM and Ford, etc. Historically, over a million of our radios have been installed in our customers’ rides! You can see our great products at www.custom autosound.com.

Wilson cell phone signal boosters also work for your iPad or other tablet, mobile WiFi hotspots like the MiFi, netbooks, and any device that uses a cellular signal. There are many Wilson signal booster models covering almost any weak-signal situation, whether in your home or office, a large commercial warehouse, inside your vehicle or

even for a boat. And Wilson’s signal boosters all come ready for do-it-yourself installation. As the leader in the industry, Wilson has been building cell phone signal boosters for 10 years, and has been awarded 10 U.S. patents for new technologies that enhance cell phone signals. All customers get a 30-day unconditional money-back guarantee, and all Wilson signal boosters are designed, built, tested, and supported in the U.S. But don’t take our word for it; visit www.wilsonelectronics.com/presskit.php and see what others, including PC World, Engadget, and the Washington Post, have said. Dropped calls suck, and now there’s no reason to put up with them any more. Connect and stay connected with cellular signal boosters from Wilson Electronics. their automatically backed-up content, whether they’re on a computer, a tablet or their smartphone. As Wi-Fi becomes more prevalent, consumers are also expecting devices to connect directly to each other, even if Internet access is not available. Now with Direct Mode, Eye-Fi makes it even

easier to use the smartphone or tablet you have to view and share the high-quality images taken with a digital camera as you take them. Eye-Fi will be demonstrating this new capability at CES at booth 3614 in the “Living in Digital Times” section of the North Hall. More information is also available at www.eye.fi.

ICONNECTIVITY EMBRACES COREMIDI IN ICONNECTMIDI: DEVELOPERS, USERS SALUTE ICONNECTIVITY FOR THEIR INNOVATIVE THINKING Michael Loh, Founder of iConnectivity [North Hall, booth 3922], explains how simple it is to release applications for iConnectMIDI and what the importance of speed and connectivity are for the device. CEDN: First of all, what is CoreMIDI? ML: CoreMIDI is an application developer interface [API] framework that was created originally for Mac OS X to simplify application development for MIDI [Musical Instrument Digital Interface] developers. The CoreMIDI framework was introduced in iOS 4.2 and is therefore available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad development. iConnectMIDI is fully compliant to the CoreMIDI framework. CEDN: Then this means that iOS application developers can write and release applications for iConnectMIDI?

ML: Yes, absolutely. By supporting CoreMIDI, the application developer can use Apple released interfaces to interact with iConnectMIDI. Although iConnectivity is ready and willing to offer assistance, the developer does not need any special software or agreements from us. CEDN: I can imagine this will result in a lot of applications.

Solar cell technology has come a long way in recent years, with significant improvements to cost and efficiency. These developments have created a market for portable solar power―but do we really need it? Five years ago, selling the idea of portable solar power to anything more than a small, niche market would have been quite a challenge. Today, we live in a different world where our lives are replete with cell phones, MP3 players, GPS devices, laptops, tablet computers and netbooks, all of which have become a necessary part of our daily lives. With all of this portable technology comes a constant need for power to refuel our devices. That’s where portable solar power comes into play. According to CTIA―the international association for the wireless industry―93 percent of Americans own cell phones. That’s 292.8 million people.

CEDN: Apparently developers are saying iConnectMIDI is not your normal MIDI Interface. ML: This is true. iConnectMIDI is actually a high-performance MIDI data router. We are the first interface that can bring the worlds of traditional MIDI DIN devices, USB MIDI 1.0 devices,

According to cnn.com, rough estimates project that 8.25 million iPads will be sold in 2010. Few could disagree that our reliance on mobile devices will continue to grow at an exponential rate. With this increasing use of portable technology comes a demand for alternative means to charging these devices whether on the road, at the beach, in a remote location or in an emergency situation. In truth, the applications for portable power are extraordinarily wide-reaching. We created GOAL ZERO to answer these needs. GOAL ZERO’s use of portable solar power is ahead of the curve, but we aren’t the first to realize the potential of renewable portable solar power. For years, major Fortune 500 companies have used this type of technology for their scientists and researchers working in remote locations. The military has also been researching ways to find reliable and efficient means of creating portable power for use in the field. Today, the team at GOAL ZERO has been able to take the

ENJOYING 4G SPEEDS ON ALL YOUR GADGETS By Rob Hadley, CMO, Novatel Wireless From your tablet computer and mobile gaming device to your new TV, it seems as though almost every new electronic device requires some form of high-speed connection to function at full tilt, and with the new 4G networks rolling out in 2011, there is little reason to expect anything less. 4G networks, whether based on WiMax, LTE or HSPA+, deliver vastly improved speeds to the end user.

computer applications on Mac and PC, and iOS applications together into one small box. Our embedded processor is similar to the one used in your iOS devices and is capable of handling tens of thousands of MIDI data events per second, so our device performs adequately. Finally, the outer shell of the device is hardened steel—it can take quite a beating—important for the musician on the road and on stage. controlling stage lighting and effects. CEDN: I actually saw you step on the device once at your booth. ML: Yep—let us just say I can show for sure it can take more than 200 lbs.—just not how much over. CEDN: Are you planning more features for iConnectMIDI?

ML: We look forward to it.

Whether it’s streaming large media files, collaborating with coworkers around the globe or just playing video games with a friend, 4G networks can benefit any and every user, but should you really have to buy new devices just to enjoy the speeds? No, you should have freedom of choice. Of course, if your preferred method of connection is via embedded chipsets (iPad 3G, laptops with internal 3G modems, etc), you may need or want to purchase a new device to take advantage of

ML: Definitely. We have made iConnectMIDI fully field upgradable by using a simple MIDI data file. We are of course continually working to ensure stability of the product but we are also looking into adding data management features and even our own related peripheral devices. For example, we are developing a DMX protocol accessory, a communication protocol used for

CEDN: We do thank you for your time. Where can our readers go to find out more information about this great product? ML: Of course come by our booth and see iConnectMIDI in action. They can also visit our product website at www.iconnectmidi.com. Be sure to sign up for our Facebook or Twitter feeds to keep up to date with iConnectMIDI news and events. iConnectivity is the innovator behind iConnectMIDI. recent advances in battery and solar panel technology to create the most efficient, user-friendly and cost-effective portable solar power systems available to the average consumer. At half the cost of previously available solar offerings, our products are the only on the market to offer full system technology―renewable power packs, solar panels and lights/accessories. There is also an undeniable need for renewable energy. With fossil fuel prices reaching record highs and environmental concerns at every corner, portable solar power delivers clean, renewable power at a very low cost. For example, one of GOAL ZERO’s Sherpa 50 power pack, which costs about $250, can store enough power to match the equivalent of 30,000 AA batteries over its lifetime. To put that in perspective, a pack of four AA Duracell batteries runs for about $5.29 at Staples, which comes out to $39,675 for 30,000 batteries. From another perspective, one of GOAL ZERO’s larger systems can power a base camp or fully

replace a short term gaspowered generator, minimizing the need to purchase fuel on an ongoing basis. It wasn’t long ago that I thought a GPS device would never be of use to me. Today, I use it every time I’m out of town. Five years ago, I would never have imagined the need for portable solar power while traveling. Today, I take my Sherpa 50 with me on all my flights to power my laptop and cell phone. My friend can’t imagine a hike without his Nomad 7. And now, after borrowing a Scout 150 UI during a power outage, my neighbor can’t imagine not having one for his CPAP machine so he can sleep even when the power is out. (He subsequently bought two.) Is portable solar power the next GPS? I don’t know. But what I do know is that the applications for portable solar power are endless and the market is wide. And GOAL ZERO is ready to fill that market. Learn more about GOAL ZERO at CES booth 25806 in the South Hall, visit goalzero.com or call 888-794-6250.

4G, but there are plenty of other options for folks to get 4G to their existing Wi-Fi enabled devices. New in 2011, consumers will also see next-generation USB modems launched by carriers for basic laptop connectivity. Novatel Wireless has already introduced some of these new modems, the OvationTM MC545 and MC 547, and are launching similar incarnations for the various 4G network technologies being unveiled this year. For the countless number of other

Wi-Fi enabled devices out in the world today, a 4G solution will soon be introduced to deliver these new, unprecedented speeds, the 4G MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot. Previously available on major 3G networks around the globe, MiFi provides high-speed mobile broadband access to multiple devices simultaneously, and 4G versions will soon be available on tier-one operators networks in North America. These new 4G MiFi devices will allow ANY Wi-Fi enabled gadget to leverage the upgraded networks and their incredible download/upload speeds. So for any of your Continued on Page 104

NOX AUDIOʼS DEVICES DESIGNED FOR COMFORT, PORTABILITY, HIGH SOUND QUALITY Brad Schlachter, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, NOX Audio, talks about his company’s products. CEDN: What is NOX Audio, and what kind of products does it make? BS: NOX Audio is the consumer brand of Solteras, an original design manufacturer [ODM] with more than 10 years and millions of units of experience in creating personal audio devices. NOX is dedicated to making high-quality audio experiences accessible―through the quality of our products, including the Scout, Specialist and Negotiator, their intuitive design features, and their price points. CEDN: You mentioned design features and price points; what makes NOX Audio unique in that respect?

BS: Well, our first product, the NOX Specialist, was designed for comfort and portability without sacrificing sound quality. It’s small and lightweight enough to listen to for hours on end, and folds up easily to take on a plane or a long car ride, but it’s robust enough to deliver an awesome experience for listening to music or playing video games. The NOX Scout earbuds were designed with similar principles―high-quality balanced armature drivers deliver crisp, clean sound; tangle-free flat and square cables; the ‘world’s smallest’ send/end button; and in-ear stabilizers that hold the earbuds in place while jogging or working out. We’ve actually had consumers tell us they’d expect to pay twice as much or more for the features we include. CEDN: What kind of consumer is NOX targeting for its products?

HOVERCAM ʻNEOʼ COMBINES HIGHRESOLUTION DOCUMENT SCANNER WITH 1080P FULL MOTION VIDEO TO CREATE THE ʻOFFICE CAMERAʼ Pathway Innovations and Technology, Inc., based in San Diego, Calif., has introduced a new series of three “office camera” products at CES 2011 that combine the functions of scanner, video conferencing camera and document camera into one product for office workers to communicate more effectively and increase productivity. Called the HoverCam Neo, these office cameras are designed with highend optical distortion free lens and sensors to capture document images, 3D objects and technical drawings. Unlike a low resolution webcam, point and shoot digital cameras or smartphones, the HoverCam Neo is better suited to handle digital imaging and video communication needs around the office, capturing still or live video images of both objects, documents and people. The Neo can

perform a quick “scan” of a document instantly and also record full motion HD video at 1080p resolution. Pathway’s HoverCam office cams are also highly compact and versatile, which allows them to be placed next to a laptop or on a desk at all times, functioning as a convenient, indispensible, and always available digital imaging tool around professional or home offices. In addition to desktop use, the HoverCam Neo can be used as a video presentation tool in a conference or meeting room to project 1080p HD video onto a whiteboard or screen when connected to a projector. The Neo can also be connected to a PC or Mac as a video conferencing camera. With its dual camera configuration, users can simultaneously present drawings, printed materials, and 3D objects, using the built-in conferencing

BS: With the features and versatility of our products, the quality of sound they deliver and their price points, we’ve built NOX as a brand―for everyone from music lovers, to gamers, to fitness buffs and anyone that expects great sound out of their headsets. CEDN: NOX’s new tagline is ‘Audio Uprising.’ What does that mean for consumers? BS: ‘Audio uprising’ came from NOX’s commitment to providing a new generation of high quality audio products with killer sound and revolutionary design. Consumers are tired of having to settle for products that sacrifice performance for portability, versatility or style, so we’re creating products to defy that notion. CEDN: Who determines the type of products that NOX makes? BS: As a brand backed by our own ODM, we have the freedom to design all elements of our products from the ground software along with a picturein-picture screen of the user. “We designed the office cams to capture and communicate ideas,” said Ji Shen, CEO of Pathway Innovations. “Ordinary, low resolution web cams are good for capturing faces, but the HoverCam OfficeCam helps business people communicate documents and ideas more effectively.” The HoverCam Neo comes in three models: HoverCam Neo 3, Neo 5i, and Neo 5p. 1. The Specialist was the vision of NOX President Julie Ma, who saw the need for a multipurpose headset that gamers could get behind; she used her years of experience in the ODM market to design the Specialist’s features. Our other products are based on our market research, industry trends and customer feedback. CEDN: What’s in store for NOX in 2011? BS: We’ll be unveiling our third headset at CES this year. We’re putting in some special features that haven’t been seen in headsets before. Without giving too much away, I’ll close with this: we’ll have a working prototype at CES, so be sure to stop by the NOX booth to check it out, especially if you’re a gamer. ONSTAR TESTS NEW TECHNOLOGIES, FOCUSES ON ʻRESPONSIBLE CONNECTIVITYʼ At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, OnStar continues to pilot major innovations that significantly increase drivers’ in-car connection to the world, while extending its safety leadership in the automotive industry. The company announced renewed focus during the “relaunch” of its brand in September 2010 along with new services, capabilities and technology for its nearly 6 million subscribers. The news was a part of the top-to-bottom realignment of the company’s long-term strategy built around responsible connectivity. For 15 years, OnStar’s iconic blue button has been instantly recognizable to consumers as an emergency response service, but of the 3 million buttons pushed each month, the majority are not emergency situations. In fact, 1.7 million Turn-by-Turn Navigation routes are delivered per month and consumers are safely connecting with OnStar’s HandsFree Calling with more than 37 million

minutes purchased per month. OnStar recently supported launch of the innovative Chevrolet Volt Extended Range Electric vehicle with myvolt.com, a website that leverages OnStar’s real-time data connection to enhance the overall Volt ownership experience. It allows owners to perform tasks including checking their battery’s state of charge, setting the charge time and unlocking the doors remotely through the Internet. “Technology and consumer demand for connectivity are changing how Americans drive,” said Chris Preuss, President. “As a company, we’re broadening our focus. Safety continues to be our No. 1 priority and our live Advisors are the ultimate ‘app’ to help subscribers stay connected and safe on the road.

SMART ENERGY COMES HOME By Jason Few, President, Reliant Energy Why is a competitive electricity retailer from Texas exhibiting at CES? The easy response is, “Why not? All of our great consumer electronics need electricity.” But the more complete answer is, “There is no better place to demonstrate how the combination of technology, innovative services, and cleaner, greener energy will change our future.” Some of the greatest advances come not from breakthrough discoveries but from breakthrough combinations—a phone that lets us control home air conditioning, a website that shows us how much electricity we use each day, an electric charger that allows us to “fuel” our cars at home—that provide the next big thing. The next big thing in electricity is

Smart Energy and that’s why Reliant Energy and our parent company NRG Energy are at CES. What does Smart Energy mean for consumers? Plenty. With the digital smart grid, electricity providers can offer smart energy products and services so consumers can make informed choices about how they buy and use electricity. Combine those with a smart meter; a home energy network connecting appliances, climate control, and security systems; and electric vehicle charging and we have a new way to purchase, use and control our electricity. That same smart grid will make it easier to integrate new sources of alternative power like wind, solar, biomass, nuclear and distributed generation into the energy mix and make that energy available to consumers. NRG Energy—

Consumer Electronics Daily News We’re also looking at technologies that help subscribers continue their life while on the road, but in ways that will ensure their hands are on the wheel, eyes are on the road and mind is on the drive.” Some of the innovative technologies that OnStar is testing and planning to pilot in the near future include: Redesigned IT Infrastructure and Next Generation Hardware: OnStar revealed its Advanced Telematics Operations Management System (ATOMS) computing platform, one of the most powerful and comprehensive machine-to-machine telematics systems in the world. ATOMS allows for advanced geo-boxing and voice-texting engines, including Audio Facebook Updates. OnStar also unveiled its ninth generation hardware that improves the user experience with new natural voice recognition, Bluetooth phonebook, improved navigation, the ability to work with advanced traffic management and severe weather alert services, also known as geo-boxed notification services.

Facebook Updates would allow OnStar subscribers to verbally update their Facebook status message through audio recordings and/or listen to their most recent news feed messages through the OnStar Virtual Advisor service. Voice Texting: OnStar is beta testing voice-based SMS (short message service). This feature would enable customers to have their text messages read to them using Bluetooth. The Bluetooth technology allows users to connect their mobile device to their vehicle and receive automated text messages. With one button press, on the steering wheel, users can reply to a text by verbally selecting a preset response. OnStar is continuing to test Facebook and voice texting features to ensure they meet strict safety and usability criteria before offering them to consumers.

Audio Facebook Updates: OnStar is testing in-car social media interaction. If implemented, Audio

one of the leading power generators in the nation—is working on energy production from wind, solar and other clean generating technologies that will be both low carbon and low cost. With smart energy solutions, each of us will be able to decide how much we want to spend on comfort, on entertainment, or on charging the electric cars that will be in many garages starting next year. We will know what it costs to be cool in summer and warm in winter, and just how much power we use to watch the Super Bowl on the latest and greatest flat screen TV. The power of competition is driving companies like Reliant to offer customers smart energy solutions that leverage the smart grid. Our e-SenseTM

suite of plans, products and services gives consumers more information about the power they use; innovative plans like time-of-use pricing; and the ability to monitor when and how they use power. Soon we will see completely new ways of buying electricity like flatrate pricing to charge electric vehicles and pay-as-you-go plans based on actual use rather than estimates. So, when we turn on that latest and greatest flat screen in a home that is at the temperature we chose; when we use electricity for comfort, entertainment, security and transportation, we know we are getting the most out of it. The consumerfocused solutions that NRG and Reliant Energy are showcasing at CES bring the benefits of smart energy home. Visit us at booth 2636 in the North Hall and see for yourself how Smart Energy is just as important as the consumer electronics it powers. For more information, visit www.reliant.com.

billion images taken, only 8.7 billion were saved and printed. Giving the consumer the ultimate option for economy and ease, a quality single-use digital camera is expected to be very popular. VistaQuest prides itself in its capability to alter and create just the right set of attractive features and function while keeping price points a priority. The three new models of single-use cameras prove that point. All three cameras are shipped with USB cords to allow downloads directly to a personal computer. The first unit available will come with built-in flash so that the consumer can take great indoor as well as outdoor photographs. Specializing in mass market, electronic superstores and catalog sales, VistaQuest boasts the ability to manufacture just what buyers and consumers are asking for in price ranges from $9.99 to

$149. The well-priced, broad line of their stylish products opens doors to a variety of market segments where customization is a primary request to meet clients’ needs such as private labeling. Cliff Montgomery, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, explained, “We’ve seen a rise in the premium-incentive market over the past few months and see increasing evidence that mass market accounts are becoming more aware of the fine products and profit margins we offer. Our quality is admired and our price points are perfect for the present economic challenges.” In addition to their own VistaQuest line, they offer the Speedo brand to round out a range of price points. Headquartered in Woodland Hills, Calif., VistaQuest opened a division in France 2008 to tap the European market. They also have a presence in Canada and a strong presence in Asia.

AN INTERVIEW WITH NICKEL-ZINC CEDN: Welcome to the battery world, Nickel-Zinc! Tell me about yourself. NZ: Although I’m fairly new to the market, I have a long history. I don’t mean to brag, but my inherent capacity for high performance has been recognized for almost 100 years. And I hate to namedrop, but I was actually first introduced by Thomas Edison.

welcome back then! So what did PowerGenix do to turn you into such a powerful, ecofriendly battery?

Originally, I was put to use in electric vehicles until the combustion engine emerged as the technology of choice for automobile propulsion. However, with new breakthroughs in engineering, I’ve become the high-performance, cost-effective and safe battery solution for high-drain motor driven toys and tools, cameras and other portable electronic devices.

NZ: My adoptive parents, PowerGenix, started working with me in 2000 with the goal of creating high-performance and safe alternative existing rechargeable battery technologies. Using both a patented electrolyte and a patented electrode composition, the smart folks at PowerGenix were able to resolve past issues of dendrite formation and shape change of the zinc electrode during cycling, which had been problematic for me in the past. Now I’m in better shape than ever before!

CEDN: Well, I should have said

from the retailers where they purchase their products. Our most recent retail partner to offer our product is Mothercare UK.

CEDN: Tell our readers a little bit about The BabyPlus Company.

CEDN: Can you tell us how your product The BabyPlus Prenatal Education System® differs from other products on the market designed to play music in the womb?

JL: The BabyPlus Company, LLC is a woman-owned business founded in 1998 by Lisa Jarrett. Our product is sold through recognized channels such as Amazon, Target.com, BabiesRUs.com, Destination Maternity, and Cosway, Ltd. As of 2010, Baby Plus has been shipped into over 55 countries and 11 percent of sales are outside the U.S. The strength of the BabyPlus brand and sales momentum has caught the attention of expectant parents from around the world as well as

JL: The BabyPlus Prenatal Learning System is a patented, safe, developmentally appropriate curriculum designed to strengthen cognitive development. The current product, version one, is introduced anytime between 1832 weeks of pregnancy for two hours a day. The curriculum is not music or words. Lessons are progressive, based on the natural prenatal auditory

competition? NZ: We compounds can be competitive, and I am proud to say that I win against Nickel-Cadmium [NiCd], Nickel MetalHydride [NiMH] and Lithium-Ion [Liion] in a number of important areas. Here are some details on what sets me apart from the competition: Power: At 1.6V, I deliver 30 percent more power than NiMH and NiCd [1.2V], comparable to Li-ion but faster. For example, in digital cameras, I enable virtually no lag between shots. Safety: While the inherent flammability of Li-ion’s constituent parts requires care during shipping and handling, I am 100 percent safe and non-combustible. Cost: I’m cost-competitive with premium NiCd and have a 20-30 percent cost advantage over NiMH. My cost advantage over Li-ion is 50 percent.

69

Environment: As the most recyclable rechargeable chemistry, I can be turned into valued products when I am done serving my time as a battery. Finally, I have a small size and low internal resistance, which enables the delivery of significantly more power during periods of peak demand than a NiCd or NiMH battery of comparable size. In short―I might be small, but I pack a punch! CEDN: That sounds great. What applications do you work best with? NZ: I’m ideally suited for any highpower, high-drain applications, from your portable speaker system to GPS device to your Wii controller. A general rule of thumb: if it has a screen or a motor, then I’m your battery! For more information, visit www .powergenix.com.

of product validation.

CEDN: What do you feel is the most significant event for BabyPlus in 2010? JL: It’s difficult to isolate any one event. I will say the completion of our design for a study by Indiana University and Riley Hospital for Children on the impact of the BabyPlus curriculum on cognitive development is significant and very exciting to our company. This is the kind of research partnership that companies like ours dream of in terms

CEDN: Can you give us an idea of the general outlook for this product? JL: It is an exciting time for our entire team at BabyPlus. We have experienced extremely healthy growth in an economy that has been difficult, to say the least. One of the crowning moments at our headquarters daily would be the consistent 4-5 star customer reviews we see on the sites that sell our product. Moms that wear our system during pregnancy see the benefits listed on our site manifesting in their children. CompuExpert (Con’t. from p. 1)

AA: CompuExpert is a California-based distribution business that specializes in video gaming products. We’ve been around since 1991, and by narrowing our focus to only gaming-related products, we’re able to do a better job servicing the retail channels with the latest and greatest gaming gadgets. CEDN: What would you say makes CompuExpert unique? AA: For the past five years, CompuExpert has been roaming the globe looking for gaming accessories that are popular in Europe and bringing these brands that have been proven abroad on an exclusive basis to the North American gaming community. Believe it or not, gamers in Europe and the U.S. are very similar; but culture plays a big role in the design of some products, making most of these accessories unique compared to their counterpart in the U.S. iGi Corp. (Con’t. from p. 1)

allowing the user to control virtually any infrared device. i-Got-Control, the world’s easiest iOS universal remote attachment, sells in more than 23 countries and is available locally in major retail chains throughout the United States. Boasting an industry-leading database of more than 40,000 IR codes for consumer electronic devices worldwide, the i-Got-Control accessory and its MyGait (Con’t. from p. 1)

are for entertainment, communication and mobility. This senior market is an age tsunami and will constitute more than 25 percent of the U.S population in coming years and will influence all other Americans. How do you move into this market segment? What products should be merchandised? Who actually makes the purchase? SeniorCircuits offers the most comprehensive program of manufacturing, retail, and marketing management for seniors available today. With management of incomparable experience in this area, SeniorCircuits provides a unique family of brands and maintains the highest level of customer support to seniors. The organization’s knowledge and skill allow it to lead the industry in bringing FLIR Systems (Con’t. from p. 4)

thermal night vision camera for under $2,000 that people can use for just about anything—hiking, camping, home security, you name it. This new camera will be formally released this spring, so the only place people will be able to see it until then will be at Show Stoppers. CES: What technology do you equate thermal imaging to as far as consumer adoption is concerned? AT: GPS receivers. They had the same military heritage as thermal cameras, and they were big, heavy, and expensive in the beginning. Over the years, they

CEDN: Is CompuExpert introducing any new products at CES 2011? AA: Yes, we are showing a number of new products from some of our European partners, like the X-Tatic SX and SP, both high-end gaming headsets from Sharkoon, and the NAOS 5000 and 3200 gaming mice from Mionix. These products have something of a cult following in other countries and have won a lot of awards, but haven’t been available for gamers in the U.S. until now. Also, a full line-up of upcoming products for 2011 by Sharkoon, Mionix, and Raptor will be presented to media and retailers. CEDN: What distinguishes CompuExpert’s products from the competition? AA: All of our exclusive products have been getting glowing reviews from the media and gamers—a testament to the high quality of design and manufacturing that goes into the making of these products. The people who

Consumer Electronics Daily News make these accessories are avid gamers and very dedicated to putting out great products. Sharkoon, Mionix, and Raptor are all very high-end gaming accessories but affordably priced for the average consumer. CEDN: To what do you attribute CompuExpert’s success? AA: We have a meticulous product evaluation process that every brand goes through before we decide to bring it to North America. On average, we pick only one out of 50 lines that we put through the test and, there are several criteria that need to be met before we decide to take on a product. Some of the attributes we’re looking for include quality, affordability, durability, looks and appeal, ease of use, and brand awareness in Europe. We’re pretty picky!

North America? AA: A lot of preparation goes into successfully launching a European product in North America. You can’t just throw a product on the shelf and expect it to do well without laying the groundwork. At CompuExpert we offer a complete package to our partners, from handling the retail channel to creating a demand for the products through public relations, marketing, tradeshow participation, and much more. CompuExpert will be showcasing their line-up by appointment in the South Hall Meeting Room 25824 at CES 2011. Retailers, distributors, developers, publishers and other businesses interested in meeting with CompuExpert should e-mail Kelly Stewart at kstewart@compuexpert.com.

the right products to meet the demand in this burgeoning senior market. The brands are MyGait (computers for seniors), ClearSounds (hearing assisted appliances), TV Ears (TV listening devices), Mangar (bathroom mobility), Rascal (patented Scooters for safe mobility), and Celery (simple e-mail without computers). Focused on entertainment, communication, and quality of life through these patented technologies, SeniorCircuits positions these exclusive products in a simple framework, while developing features between these brands to create a family approach. Bud Myers, President of SeniorCircuits, is a revered national sales and marketing veteran in consumer electronics. He has been affiliated with such companies as Marantz, Frox interactive, Casio, Craig, Remington, Unical, and Rayovac. Most recently he served as the

Senior Director of Merchandising at firstSTREET, a direct marketer to the senior market. Myers recently commented: “There is a commodity mentality among retailers. While a new distribution tactic may give any retailer a different look, as a group, retailers are typically slow to develop successful strategies for achieving a fusion of products into merchandising. Putting audio together with video to form home theater was an onerous process although both products were separately displayed for years. Our nation’s aging population is demanding appropriate new products for aging in the home. Seniors are fully capable of purchasing those products, but they simply cannot find them presently. SeniorCircuits offers a cohesive, strategic approach for marketing to this crucial and growing segment of the population.

Moreover, there needs to be an understanding of the cultural shift in the sales and support process. Retailers have an opportunity to be the trusted source for a significant array of products that are needed, not just wanted. “Over the past eight years, I have been involved with nearly every major consumer product that was launched into the senior market and have worked in product development with many of those innovations. We know what products respond and which do not; we can differentiate between items that work well and those that are not ready for prime time. SeniorCircuits is implementing a national and disciplined distribution strategy to form long-term relationships and bring the best in class products to this market.” Information is available in booth 3313 in the North Exhibit Hall.

became available and affordable to the consumer market; prices fell and demand rose. We expect consumers will adopt thermal imagers even faster, since there are hundreds of consumer applications for a camera that can see in total darkness, and almost everyone will enjoy the ability to see in total darkness for some reason.

And for drivers or boaters, who want to see what’s in front of them at night with enough time to react. Anything you would use a flashlight for around the house, you can use a FLIR camera, and get better results. The list of applications is virtually endless.

You’ll have to watch and see, but our goal is ‘Infrared Everywhere;’ we want to have a thermal imager in every home, car, boat, business, and aircraft.

CES: Prices seem to be coming down; where are they today and where are they headed?

AT: We expect our thermal imagers to be as common as the digital camera. Since FLIR cameras don’t require any light at all, you can imagine how many uses there are for this technology.

CES: What are the ‘consumer’ applications for thermal imaging? AT: The list is as long as your imagination. You can imagine how powerful it is to see clearly in total darkness for home security use, since you don’t have to turn lights on to detect suspicious activity.

AT: We’re introducing lower-cost, highperformance thermal night vision cameras every year. In fact, we’re releasing one for under $1,500 in January, and that’s for performance that cost $35,000 or more 10 years ago. Where it’s going?

CES: Where do you see this technology in five years?

Visit FLIR Systems at South Hall Lower Level booth 26215, or visit www.flir.com, to see all of the consumer applications of thermal imaging technology for yourself.

Consumer Electronics Daily News EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC-BRESSER (Con’t. from p. 1)

New Zealand. New for this year is the BRESSER MID-7 Tablet touch device embedded with 3G and Wi-Fi running the open source OS Android 2.1. Scott Roberts from EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC-BRESSER describes the new Android touch tablet, “We are very excited to bring forth an unlocked 3G/Wi-Fi tablet in the popular 7-inch format. At under $300 retail, we think it is the perfect combination of size, performance, functionality, flexibility, and price. The huge range of Android iGUGU USA (Con’t. from p. 1)

IC: We design and manufacture innovative entertainment technology products that integrate computer and Internetbased content into a home entertainment center. Our InterneTV and Gamecore products move the Internet content from small desktop screens to the living room television, allowing consumers to game and enjoy digital video content easily, intuitively and comfortably. CEDN: What was the most significant event that affected your company in the past year? IC: The awareness generated by the launch of Google TV and Apple TV brought to light the concept of placeshifting Internet-based content to the living room television like probably no other entity could have. Reviews of the various competing solutions have surfaced, revealing major limitations in the type of content that these products can stream. Cool Components (Con’t. from p. 1)

DL: Cool Components was born out of the custom audio video industry where the heat being generated by these large high-end systems is a huge problem. So jumping ahead many years, we now manufacture the most comprehensive line of cooling products and have been the innovator behind our products and some others out there, if you know what I mean. CEDN: Tell me briefly about your products, and what makes them different? DL: The biggest thing about our products in general is that what we do is not rocket science. At this point it’s all fan-based cooling products but being from the custom installation world, the products have been engineered to be both aesthetically pleasing, easy to install, and simply effective. We have the added challenge that such products need to be quiet because in the residential world at least, no one wants to hear the sound fans running. We accomplish this by having fans specially manufactured for us, and we design enclosures to maximize airflow and minimize noise. For the line of products, basically we offer products to cool cabinets and enclosures and then to also vent rooms and closets where components are located. We have the most comprehensive line of rack cooling products including rack side

that limit consumers to viewing paid content, and a very limited selection of free content, from the Internet, iGUGU InterneTV provides consumers with access to a wide variety of free Internetbased content as well as high-definition content available on the iGUGU servers. In addition, our system utilizes a backlit handheld remote control, that can be operated with one hand, that incorporates a trackball, full QWERTY keyboard and LED screen to provide easy, intuitive access to volumes of rich video content. The price point of our solution starts at less than $100 giving consumers the most value and content of any product in the category.

video content available on the Internet. The problem is that consumers don’t want to watch videos at computer desks on small screens—they enjoy watching videos on large format televisions in the comfort of a living room or home entertainment center. iGUGU InterneTV gives people the ability to bring the world of Internet-based content to their television through an easy-to-use interface and compact, feature-rich handheld remote control.

CEDN: What products are you showing this year at CES 2011? IC: We’re demonstrating iGUGU InterneTV, which enables consumers to enjoy Internet- and computer-based video content on their big screen televisions using a wireless handheld remote control, and iGUGU Gamecore, which enables computer gamers to play the majority of computer- and Internet-based games on their television using an intuitive wireless game controller. CEDN: How is iGUGU InterneTV different from devices such as Google TV and Apple TV? IC: Unlike all of the competing solutions coolers and shelves with cooling integrated directly into the shelves. We even manufacture our own racks with cooling integrated into the racks, but we’re really not trying to be a rack company. I just had the idea, and we made it happen. CEDN: Why is cooling now just coming about? Has something changed with electronics to essentially have this emerge as a new and increasingly important category in electronics? DL: That is a good question as there’s several aspects to this. First, people used to be proud of that big rack of components with all the flashing lights so they would show it for everyone to see. Now, they want to hide it in a cabinet or closet, put it behind closed doors and at the same time, this restricts airflow and thus the components overheat. Components are also changing because most everything is micro processor based now. Simply put, components are just computers essentially and we all know that computers generate heat. Then add to this a society that wants more toys, more features, more everything but also in a smaller box which again, limits airflow. Also in the home we are seeing more distributed audio, which means more amplification, more heat, and then add to that, video is the latest craze with HD and 3D but all the processing power brings more heat and that is on top of game boxes and media centers, etc., etc., etc.

The BRESSER MID-7 is estimated to retail between $249 to $299 with availability in January or February. For more information, call 888-599-7597 or visit bresser.com/mid7.

CEDN: The industry is inundated with tech gadgets that promise to make life easier or more entertaining. Why do we need a solution like iGUGU InterneTV? IC: Amateur producers, major film studios and television production companies are fueling the exponential growth of CEDN: This is your first year exhibiting at CES. Why this show and why now? DL: CES is simply a great show and it brings a great draw but for us, it’s really a coming out even though we’ve been in business over six years and have been exhibiting at different shows for four or five years now. Our initial market focused more heavily on the CEDIA crowd, the custom market, but now with our current and planned expansion into new markets and our brand gaining more recognition, I simply felt that we were ready for CES and the exposure I’m hoping it brings. CEDN: How has this economy affected Cool Components, and how has it changed the way you all do business? DL: Things have been pretty interesting since the economic downturn where virtually in an instant we went from explosive growth to then just holding on. After the realization set in that it was time to buckle down and the game had changed, we then just focused on our position in the market and building our operations so when things rebounded, we would be well positioned and have excess capacity and I feel strongly that we have accomplished those goals. Now we’re moving forward on many fronts. CEDN: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your

company in the past year? DL: This year has been interesting where we have expanded into the commercial cooling market and we signed our first large OEM deal. We have also partnered with another big player in the industry and now progressing with a major retailer. Sorry, I can’t reveal the names of a lot of these because we either have NDAs or it’s just a little premature but a lot of good things are happening at Cool Components and this year really will turn out to be a break-out year for us. CEDN: What does the future hold for Cool Components? DL: Well that is another very good question but unfortunately the crystal ball is in the shop! Seriously, though, we will just continue with our strategy of building our brand and focusing on our market position. We learned a lot dealing with a large company with the OEM deal so we’re going to look more toward that market. We’re also going to expand into some other markets, beyond residential and commercial electronics, and also continue growing internationally. We definitely have our work cut out for us but we’re on a great path and have a great team so the prospects for the future are pretty exciting. electronics devices are expected to be in the more than 800 million homes with broadband connections, and this proliferation of Web-enabled, smarter devices has consumers warming to the concept. For example, to meet the insatiable appetite for entertainment in homes, smarter algorithms in devices like TVs could adjust

programming and advertising to individual tastes, and TVs with Web browsers could host data from connected devices like lighting, thermostats and smart meters. In the kitchen, refrigerators could adjust cooling temperatures based on the volume of items stored, and on the health and well-being front customers could monitor their health

through tools like Internet-connected medical devices, such as a pulse oximeter that can determine if oxygen levels in blood are low and alert health professionals. life, 15 laser lumens, a category-leading 5,000:1 native contrast ratio, and the shortest throw ratio of any pico projector on the market. The SHOWWX+ displays large, bright images even in close or cramped environments, such as on the back of an airplane seat, a hallway or even an elevator. The shorter “throw” of SHOWWX+ allows users to project images that are twice as big as images from competing products from the same projection distance. SHOWWX+ offers a simple experience for expanding viewing experiences beyond a palm or pad-sized screen. Users simply connect Apple devices via the included high-quality video component cable and play media

from their own device to instantly project it. They can combine an iPhone with an application such as Netflix and SHOWWX+ to get a big-screen movie experience virtually anywhere. SHOWWX+ is powered by MicroVision’s PicoP® display engine, which uses patented laser-scanning technology to create large, vivid, uniform images that are always in focus, at the highest contrast, in the widest field of view. Unlike other pico projectors, SHOWWX+ does not require complex lenses, focus wheels or color wheels. The architecture of the PicoP display engine not only contributes to the slim size of SHOWWX+―about the same size as an iPhone―it also allows for efficient

power consumption enabling a longer battery life. With MicroVision’s laser-scanning technology, every pixel is the same intensity, creating vivid, saturated colors and brightness that are uniform from the center of the display to the edges. Images never experience color breakup or rainbow artifacts, even in fast-moving video scenes or when the projector or the viewer’s head moves. In addition, laser images are always in focus regardless of variations in projection distance or display surface, making SHOWWX+ ideal for emerging ultramobile applications like iPhone games that use accelerometers and gyroscopes or augmented reality.

“Intelligence” in the Intelligent Mobile Hotspot category. With the MiFi OS, GPS, on-board widgets and application support, the next generation of MiFi will allow any device with a browser to leverage its value-adding applications and widgets. By hosting critical applications on a MiFi, users no longer need to download and install the program on each individual machine, meaning applications like AutoVPN connection, file sharing and streaming video could

greatly improve efficiency for small workgroups. Also, because the MiFi comes with an embedded GPS-chipset, your devices will be able to use programs like local weather and locationbased services. As these 4G networks are rolling out across the world, take the intelligent approach to leveraging the faster speeds, improved reliability and more robust infrastructure. There are multiple 4G mobile broadband solutions to

fit your specific needs, whether it’s a USB modem, embedded in the device or a MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot. Get yourself connected to the mobile 4G networks anywhere―in the home, in the car and on-the-go and you’ll be happy when you’re seamlessly communicating on your next online videoconference or blasting through the next season of your favorite show online. RS: Many people don’t realize that we actually started in the consumer market— our first major tradeshow was in 1995 at CES. Even though 225,000 consumers have bought TASER systems for protection, many consumers are unaware they can own a TASER electronic control device [ECD]. Our mission at TASER is to protect life by producing innovative technologies that make communities safer and more prepared. CEDN: What makes TASER a popular booth to visit at CES? RS: Attendees come by our booth for the opportunity to test-fire a TASER C2™ ECD. Being able to touch, feel and even use a TASER while at the show really allows for customers to better understand why TASERs are an easy-to-use and very safe consumer protection device. CEDN: Tell us something about TASER that people would be surprised to know. RS: More than 90 percent of law enforcement agencies in the United States use TASER ECDs—with more than 500,000 systems deployed in public safety. While people may have heard news reports of situations where TASER ECDs were used and people were hurt, they may be surprised to learn that the risk of injury is actually much higher from engaging in sporting activities than from police use of TASER ECDs. It’s unknown to most that TASER ECDs have safely ended over 50,000 potential lethal force encounters, thus saving tens of thousands of lives. CEDN: TASER has had great success in

law enforcement, how does that translate to the consumer market?

CEDN: What consumer opportunities do you foresee in the future for TASER?

RS: When it comes to protecting yourself and your family, it’s critical to know you have the most reliable and most effective technology available. Most customers choose TASER because they know it’s the same technologies used by the professionals.

RS: We see enormous opportunities to enable families to protect themselves, whether it’s for consumers with our TASER C2 ECD or from dangerous behaviors with our Protector solution. It’s truly rewarding to be involved in bringing technology to market that saves lives and empowers people to feel safer.

CEDN: What caused TASER to become concerned with the issue of distracted driving? RS: Distracted driving is one of the fastest growing dangers in our modern communities. Last year, nearly 6,000 people died and 500,000 were injured in distracted driving incidents.
